Vancouver Fringe Festival
Information
The 2021 Fringe Festival is going to delight your senses and provide you with a theatre experience that is Fringe worthy! Local, national and international artists bring you in-person and digital offerings that showcase that we are Sylvia Ceacero resilient and that theatre is Executive Director, here to stay. Whether you Interim access the performances live Vancouver Fringe or online, this year’s lineTheatre Society up appeals to all senses and sensibilities, invites everyone to embrace new and diverse horizons, and challenges us to think differently and to open our hearts and minds. Theatre brings us back to our roots and also grounds us. It provides soul enriching experiences that create long lasting memories and bonds, fills our hearts with delight, provokes our thinking and challenges our assumptions. My short stay as Interim E.D. has been filled with hard work, delight, a profound sense of accomplishment and extraordinary respect for the individuals who serve this organization. Our Board, tirelessly reaches further and deeper into the organization to elevate it to new horizons. Our staff works relentlessly to accomplish the vision of the organization to bring theatre to everyone. Our volunteers rally with the organization to assist with providing you, our dear audience, with an experience like no other. And of course our donors and funders who have supported and continue to support the Fringe in its evolving journey. This year, we will continue to provide our audiences, artists, volunteers and staff with a safe Festival environment while we amp up the enjoyment and the sensory experience. The Fringe is transforming itself and along with that transformation, it looks to a future that is filled with diversity, hope, compassion, understanding, inclusivity, accessibility, abundance and joy.
The past year has been challenging for virtually everyone involved in the arts, the Fringe included. We want to take the time to learn from these experiences and undertake a long term visioning exercise that includes everyone with an interest in the Fringe. With that in mind, we invite you to participate in our Fringe Engagement Project so you can do some storytelling of your own. Using Participatory Narrative Inquiry and working with Harvest Moon Consulting, we are asking you, our Fringe community, to share a single Fringe story with us by using this link: https://harvestmoonpni. com/wp-con-tent/plugins/narrafirma/webapp/survey. html#project=Vancouver%20Fringe&survey=Fringe%201.0 Whether you have been to one show or 50, are a volunteer, an artist, a donor, a staff member, or a friend of the festival, your stories are important to us and will help us shape the Fringe of the future. Thank you for supporting Theatre for Everyone. As a IBPOC board member, performer in this year’s Fringe, and someone hard of hearing, I’m especially looking forward to the excitement of live theatre and cheering audiences. And let us hope that this year will be one full of cheer, as we welcome artists and audiences to one Jai Djwa of our most diverse Fringes Member of the BC Arts yet. This year, 38% of the Council shows are by or include Member of the IBPOC artists. This info is Vancouver Fringe Board based on core creative teams and casts that include IBPOC folks. While we continue to work on getting our house in order and building our organization to be more inclusive and welcoming, I personally am also delighted that finally, theatre is back. Happy Fringing!

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Vancouver Fringe Festival, I would like to welcome you to the 2021 Fringe! Lucy Eveleigh President Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals
I am so happy to write a welcome letter to the Vancouver Fringe community, who are lucky enough to be receiving an outdoor and indoor in person events, as well as some digital offerings. Despite the ongoing circumstances, the Vancouver Fringe team and their artists have come together to make this all possible.
It has been such a difficult year for Fringe Festivals around the world and the Vancouver Fringe team has worked tirelessly to stay connected to its artists and patrons over that time. Their ability to produce a Festival both in person and digital is definitely something to celebrate. The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals (CAFF) has over 30 member festivals across Canada and the USA and we exist as an organization to unite, support, empower, and strengthen our member festivals in order to cultivate and foster independent artistic exploration for artists and audiences across North America. CAFF has been taking the time over this last year to reflect upon what our organization is doing and can do for the theatre artists of the world and we want to thank you, the audience, who come out every year to support Fringe Festivals. Your support is integral to these artists. In these ever-changing times of a global pandemic, precarious funding, expensive living costs, and the day-to-day struggles many artists face, especially now, having people see their work is more crucial than ever before. So please take the time to get safely involved, however you can, you are ambassadors for these artists, and your support has a meaningful effect on their careers. Thank you for joining us in this global movement of the FRINGE!

Welcome to the 2021 Vancouver Fringe Festival!
Sae-Hoon Stan Chung
The theme of renewal in this year’s festival is a testament to the resiliency of the arts, as we collectively re-imagine what it means to connect with each other in ways we couldn’t have imagined just over a year ago.
Chair BC Arts Council
So much of the Fringe experience is based on the energy and connection between audiences and performers; that sense of raw and immediate reaction to work that is often new and almost always taking risks. You’re never sure what you’re going to get. It is heartening to see the festival program 15 in-person shows this year. It’s a sign of the Fringe spirit we know and love. In addition to the live performances, the festival will feature two streaming shows and a dozen prerecorded performances. This decision to allow audiences to experience the Fringe both in-person and online underscores how the festival really is for everyone. On behalf of the BC Arts Council, I’d like to congratulate the organizers, the crews, and the volunteers who are making the festival happen in what are still unusual times. And to the artists and performers, we’re so glad to see you back on our stages again. On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to congratulate the organizers of the 2021 Vancouver Fringe Festival. The Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society and its Festival has been a mainstay of our Kennedy Stewart Vancouver community since Mayor 1983. As we emerge from a City of Vancouver challenging year, the Fringe Festival emerges too for its 38th season! I am delighted to welcome the Fringe artists, the audiences and the partners who, year after year, bring thousands together to ensure theatre for everyone. I am very proud of the contribution theatre and arts make to our City and look forward to many more years of expanding, inclusive and vivacious theatre. Happy 2021 Fringe Festival to everyone!

Walking and Cycling The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a nice way to navigate the Festival. Visit vancouver. ca/streets-transportation/ cycling-routes-maps-andtrip-planner.aspx to find your best route through Vancouver’s bike-friendly streets.
Vancouver Fringe Festival
To get to Granville Island, you can also take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.

Sized Up: A Discussion Exploring Eating Disorders and Body Dysmorphia in the Performing Arts Saturday, September 11 at Noon | 75 Minutes | Zoom | 18+ | Pay What You Can (Suggested Price: $10)
For performers, our bodies are our resume. Working in a visual-medium, our appearances are under constant scrutiny: whether it’s from casting directors who tell us we don’t “fit” the part, audience members that critique an actor’s weight over their performance, or judgment from other performers, the risk of developing an eating disorder and body-dysmorphic behaviour are high in the entertainment industry. In this workshop, Artist Sarah Marchand will share her experience living with an eating disorder and how she transformed her struggles into art. There will then be a discussion where participants are encouraged to share their own journeys in a safe space, followed by a creative exercise. Trigger warnings: self-harm, eating disorders, sexism. Please make sure you are feeling emotionally available before registering. Take care of yourselves.

Hi, My Name Is Jai
LalaKiki Productions Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Jai Djwa Director: Raugi Yu Image Credit: Jai Djwa https://bit.ly/MyNameIsJai
It’s a beautiful day for baseball, sports fans... too bad we won’t be seeing much of the game. Though the slams may be grand and the fly-balls may be poppin’, this irreverent, quick-witted comedy show from Vancouver sketch duo Cake Walk is far more interested in the action that happens in between the innings and behind the scenes, whether it’s going down in the commentary booth or the nosebleed seats. Finally, a stadium experience, with none of the sports.
Why would you change the name you’ve been answering to your whole life? How do you find a new one? Why would anyone go to the trouble? Artist and performer Jai Djwa brings you on his journey with friends in HI, MY NAME IS JAI. Learn the secret power of changing your name in this funny and poignant show, directed by Raugi Yu.

Celebrate the 101st anniversary of Prohibition with flappers, gin fizz and a speakeasy cabaret. From secret cellars and doctor-prescribed alcohol to a teetotaller attacking saloons with a hatchet... if it happened during Prohibition, there’s a song about it! Featuring 1920s hits: ‘The Lips That Touch Liquor Shall Never Touch Mine,’ 'Where do They Go (When They Row Row Row)' and ‘Everybody Wants A Key To My Cellar.’ Starring Melanie Gall from shows Piaf and Brel & Ingénue.
"Come away with me." You hesitate... But who doesn't want to run away with the circus? You escape to a big top lost outside of time, an ephemeral spectacle that springs up every night at dusk in an explosion of music and glitter, only to disappear again as sunbeams crawl over the morning horizon. Audience members will follow that perpetual boy to meet scintillating mermaids, beautiful fairies, and the hopeful Wendy, deciding as she does whether to stay in Neverland... or to fly away home.
- Best Family Show, Vancouver Fringe - Best in Venue, Orlando Fringe - Staff Choice, Tampa Fringe "A delightful musical full of champagne sparkle. It’s just what audiences have come to expect from talented Melanie Gall, star of shows such as Piaf and Brel, Ingenue, and We’ll Meet Again. Her powerful soprano voice soars effortlessly." - apt613.ca

A Bard Buffet
Shakespeare Out Loud INC. West Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Rodger Barton Director: Rodger Barton Image Credit: Rodger Barton http://shakespeareoutloud.ca A Bard Buffet is an all-you-can-eat feast of some of Shakespeare’s best speeches – Titania, Juliet, Richard III, Hamlet, Edmund, Goneril, and 18 others, selected from a menu by the unruly Elizabethan mob that is the audience. Anecdotes from four years with Maggie Smith and two seasons in Peter Ustinov’s King Lear at Stratford provide some sauce and spice to the fare. Bon appétit! "We can't be anything but amazed watching this master of character transition in and out of his many roles. This performance is a lesson and one we can all use."
Rita Sheena Movement Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Rita Sheena Director: Rita Sheena Image Credit: Kristine Cofsky http://www.ritasheenamovement.com @ritasheenamovement #everybodyknows #comeemotewithme EVERYBODY KNOWS is a moody and evocative Performance Art show set to nine Leonard Cohen cover songs. In this semi-autobiographical, one-Woman musical, Rita Sheena creates a spiralling narrative using contemporary dance, post-modern quirk, and the haunting melodies of First Aid Kit. Cross Country: A Self-Help Concert Performance Portals Theatre Orlando, Florida, United States of America Playwright: Dan Drnach Director: James Honey Image Credit: PB and J Studios, Amanda Scheirer @CrossCountry:ASelf-HelpConcertPerformance @CrossCountry2021 #wheelsontheroad
What does it mean for art if an artist's consciousness carries on after death? In "The Consciousness," Reece - a struggling music composition student - tries to extract and then plagiarize a symphony from the digitized consciousness of Theo Price, a dead and (mostly) forgotten composer. But the composer's creative prowess has not thrived in the afterlife, forcing Reece to reconstruct Theo's memories.
From the heart, soul and mind of Dan Drnach... Cross Country is at its core a concept album. We call it a "Self-Help Concert Performance" because there will be actors bringing our story's characters to life. We are bringing our unique hybrid concert to you!

Dear Donald/Dear Hillary (Their Secret Correspondence) takes liberties, for laughs, with the biographies of the political rivals. What if they’ve known each other since the age of 8, assigned to be pen pals as second-graders? In their undiscovered personal letters spanning half a century, up to November 2020, we see their awkward friendship wax and wane in letters that borrow liberally (not conservatively) from Trump and Clinton’s actual public dialogue. You might be surprised who gets the last word.

Low-Vision Pre-show Notes PERFORMANCE WORKS A Side of Rice Hi, I’m Nicholas Rice. But please feel free to call me Nick. And my show, which I hope you’ll enjoy, is A Side of Rice. I started acting in high school in Winnipeg, then I continued at UBC, and I’ve been professional since May 1975. It’s a long time! Now, as I approach seventy (if all goes well, I’ll hit the big seven-0 in October), the jobs aren’t as plentiful as they once were. The folks who used to call me out of the blue to offer me work are now retiring or passing away. And this is to be expected. So now it’s up to me to make my own work. Over time a lot has happened to me, and I’ve got a ton of stories I want to tell. A Side of Rice is my collection of some of them. It’s just me, alone on stage, telling my stories to you. I have no special costume. As I have a very pale complexion, I wear something dark, something to set off my face. There are no props.

Aside from the fact that I roam the stage to try to connect with my listeners – and aside from the fact that at one point I demonstrate a few seconds of The Twist – there are no major actions.

I try to speak clearly too. After all, as someone who has spent most of a career on the stage without a mic, I want to be understood. Not only that, but between my acting gigs, I work as a substitute teacher - so again it’s vitally important that I be understood. As part of A Side of Rice, I want to greet my audience as they come into the theatre. Perhaps I say a few words of farewell to them as they

A Toast to Prohibition The stage is set up with a vintage-style microphone on a straight stand to the right, with a small table beside it. On the left of the stage is a bar glasses slightly behind, and a table in front with other bottles, as well as glasses and a recipe card for a drink titled “Three-Mile Limit.” There is a sign on the bar showing a cartoon sparrow wearing pearls and a hat and holding a Martini glass. The top section of the wooden cabinet contains a stuffed pig, which is revealed later in the show. During the show, the singing takes place at the microphone, and the talking occurs centre stage and at the bar area.

The Celebration Dance is after a deal between The Man and The Voice, which is happy and energetic. By the end of this dance, he falls down, drunk and tired. The Second Dance is along with the poem “look what I have earned from the world.” It is a deeper and slower dance. All the moves are choreographed to express the meaninglessness of the world that the main character has been in. The third dance is more epic and intense with kind of fast and hard moves. In this dance the character tries to take his real mask off. After he takes his mask off, he falls down and dies. Here the Stranger shreds and spreads it out on the ground. Then The Man wakes up.

As a performer, I will be emoting out the lyrics both using my body language and voice. Each song will have a different feeling or theme set by the tone and my interpretation. The set is simple - a yellow modern kitchen chair, a green end table with a door, an antique wooded headboard with a blue blanket on the mattress to make a bed. On the table there is a vintage yellow rotary phone. 1. The Great Event: the theatre will be blacked out for this short intro. 2. Everybody Knows: I will smugly strut on stage wearing cropped wide legged yellow pants, a blue/black/red/white/yellow striped bandeau top, and a red blazer over my shoulder. Kind of like an 80’s supermodel meets captain of a ship. My movements are small gestures that escalate into grandiose Broadway style! I exit stage
3. Who by Fire: I return on stage wearing a 1950’s inspired yellow dress with a collar and buttons down the front. I am carrying a green suitcase, which I lay on the bed. I move the yellow chair downstage and sit in it. I am cautious here in this room, and my movements are drawn towards the rotary phone. I dance with the phone. It’s melodramatic. VancouverFringe.com
4. The Future: I unbutton my yellow dress and I am wearing a white GUNS N ROSES oversized band T-shirt underneath. I sit in the chair, slide around a little disturbed. I return the chair to the back of the stage.

5. You Want It Darker: this is where the more real dancing comes in. I take off the T-shirt (revealing a nude bodysuit underneath) and change into a gothic black sheer dress. The dancing here aspires to be inspired by modern ballet, Krump, and other staccato types of movement. 6. If It Be Your Will: exasperated, I take off the black dress and lie on the bed. I move the mattress downstage and begin to dance a sad moody contemporary dance with reaching and releasing and collapsing. 7. The Asthmatic: I am wrapped in the blue blanket and slowing succumbing to anxiety. The blue blanket with me under it looks like a lump moving. I “fall asleep” in the bed. The stage will be black, and I make a quick costume change.

8. Famous Blue Raincoat: Dream / nightmare song. There is a mannequin head with a long ombré pastel blue-violet wig. She is sleeping in the bed. I appear onstage in 7 inch silver mirrored platform shoes and move around like a devious long-legged spider. I am wearing the nude body suit and my hair is tied up with a red bandanna. I put on a blue Kway rain jacket (ahem, the famous blue raincoat), and then waltz around and speak to the mannequin head, as though she was a real person. Loosely inspired by Hamlet and the Skull for “to be or not to be” ... I end up falling asleep in the bed with the mannequin head, “Jane.”

9. Hallelujah: I “wake up,” wearing a nude-coloured satin nightgown I put on the yellow dress unbuttoned. The crescendo of movements builds up with the song and the dancing is huge and virtuosic! I bow and exit with the green suitcase. 10. You’d Sing Too: this is the epilogue; I enter the stage wearing a disco-sparkle rainbow dress and the Captains hat. I look smug.

Jail bars that appear behind each of the women after they are arrested. The women are dressed up for a night out, and encounter a cop in jail that is in his traditional uniform.
dialogue tells the story. It feels like the perspective is of the women as a “collective.” There are a few cutaway shots of character’s facial expressions, responses to things other characters have said, reactions, or closeups of certain objects, like the cop’s keys. Some details here and there may be lost because they are not described – but there is a great storytelling vibe to this piece. There are two Indigenous traditional songs and sound effects used throughout this digital production.
