Welcome to the Fringe Namaste—Welcome! I am honoured, grateful, and excited to be a part of our highly ambitious team, in our relentless hard work to shift the Fringe despite these uncertain times. At the heart of our organizational and Festival Rohit Chokhani planning is our passionate Executive Director vision to cultivate and Vancouver Fringe create an open and vibrant Theatre Society independent theatre community. Our ability to serve this mission has been considerably challenged and compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its significant impact on all of us, we believe in the resilience of our performing arts community, and the underlying hope and faith that exists within the human spirit. We are excited to move forward with a modified Festival, which will be different, unique, and intimate in its own way. We are truly overwhelmed with the love and support we have received, and we welcome you all to our Fringe Village with a collaborative spirit to take care of each other while we enjoy live performances—six feet apart but with our hearts and minds united! Welcome to the 2020 Fringe Festival! We are thrilled to build on our long history of innovation and creativity to find ways to offer live theatre in our ever-changing world. In difficult times, we need theatre more than ever! As a cisgender LGBTQIA+ settler of Scottish descent President residing on the ancestral Vancouver Fringe lands of the Tsawwassen Theatre Society First Nation, I am passionate about the Fringe vision of “Theatre for Everyone.” Now more than ever, we must prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion as we find ways to continue our support of the arts and artists, while they in turn enrich our worldviews and offer us growth, excitement, joy, and respite, which are particularly important in these stressful times. 2020 has required a lot of us in many different and challenging ways. As the Fringe’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Director and an independent consultant on Equity & Disability Justice, it has been an incredibly busy time. As a gender-fluid artist of mixed racial backgrounds and Siobhan Barker Equity Diversity Inclusion living with disability, I have experienced some of the many (EDI) Director ways that BIPOC and equityVancouver Fringe seeking communities have Theatre Society been deeply affected by world events. I champion efforts, such as the Fringe, to provide opportunities and outlets for the creative spark to flourish. It’s important during times such as these to recognize JOY as a revolutionary act. As both a Fringe board member and a member of the BC Arts Council, I have seen how artists locally and nationally have been impacted. The Fringe is a festival highlight in Vancouver, marking the end of summer and the beginning of fall. This year it will have a different feel but bring the same excitement we’ve come to expect.
The Fringe is a celebration of diversity. It truly is “Theatre for Everyone.” In that spirit, I would like to thank you all, whether you are an artist, patron, volunteer, or organizer, for making the Fringe what it is: unique, unpredictable, engaged, and engaging. At the BC Arts Council, we salute the Fringe Festival for meeting the challenge of the pandemic to bring exciting and essential theatre to an eager public.
On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to congratulate the organizers of the 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival. The Fringe Festival is one of the leading cultural organizations in Vancouver Kennedy Stewart that has been at the Mayor forefront at showcasing City of Vancouver new talent since 1985. The Fringe Festival’s mission is to open the door to artists of all genres and formats and allow the exchange of expression to flow freely – this has created one the best art festivals in Vancouver. Congratulations to all the staff and over 500 volunteers who work so hard to create a successful festival during this challenging time!

Ticket Information Our top priority is the safety of our patrons, artists, volunteers, and staff. To limit contact points, the safest way to Fringe is to buy tickets online and early! They’re available online at tickets.vancouverfringe.com starting September 1. We’ll be rolling out tickets for our later events throughout the fall. Check online for the most up-to-date event information! We’re going contactless this year! All patrons are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online. At showtime, we’ll have your name on a list at the venue. No need to print your ticket or show your phone. There is no Fringe Box Office this year but tickets will be sold at the door if there is availability.
Artists will keep 100% of the base ticket price, but taxes and fees are included in the advertised price. Please note that a Fringe Membership must be in your basket or attached to your account in order to purchase tickets. You may purchase tickets for a guest if you have the appropriate number of Memberships attached to your account. Shows may sell out in advance. Buy tickets early for your must-see shows. All ticket sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. In case of show cancellation, tickets purchased in advance will be refunded to the original method of payment.

To protect the income of our artists, the Fringe does not permit refunds or exchanges once a ticket has been booked. However, we encourage all patrons to stay home if exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 and to contact the box office for ticket options.

We recommend all ticketholders take the BC COVID-19 Self-Check prior to arrival to ensure that they are not exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19. Vancouver Fringe Festival

We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before a show starts to safely check in and make your way to your seat. Doors will open 45 minutes before the performance begins.
We ask that you do not come to any in-person Fringe events if you: • Have any of the following symptoms: • Fever • Chills • New or worsening cough • Shortness of breath • New muscle aches or headache • Sore throat • Have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days • Are a close contact of a person who has tested positive for COVID-19

Tickets for all shows may be purchased at the individual venues with contactless/tap payments (no cash for the safety of our ticket sellers) starting 45 minutes before show time and until show time, subject to availability. Program Changes and Updates
New this year, we are introducing Premium Memberships for $15 per patron, in addition to our $7 General Membership. Purchasing a Premium Membership is a great way to show a little extra support for the Fringe during these uncertain times. As a perk, our Premium members will have access to Premium table seating at applicable venues, based on availability. (For September this perk is available at Performance Works events.)

In addition to accessing shows during the Festival, by joining the VFTS, you are entitled to participate in its direction by attending the VFTS Annual General Meeting in 2021. All activated Memberships will be entered into a draw for a 2021 Festival Pass. When you complete your order, just check the “Activate Membership” box to unlock voting rights and enter the draw. All personal information provided will be kept private and confidential and will not be passed on to any individual or organization as per our Privacy Policy, which is available at vancouverfringe.com/privacypolicy. Children The Fringe may not be suitable for children. Babes in arms (under two years old) are permitted, but we ask that you be respectful of other patrons and leave the theatre should your baby cause a disturbance. Keep in mind we do not censor or jury any of the content. Please consult the program guide or website for specific show ratings. “Kid’s Show” ratings are shows meant for children. “All Ages” show are child friendly, but are not necessarily created with children in mind. Get ready for this year’s performances at venues around Granville Island and East Vancouver! Performance Works and the Picnic Pavilion are located on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. It’s the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.
Walking and Cycling The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a possible way to navigate the Festival. Visit vancouver.ca/ streets-transportation/ cycling-routes-maps-andtrip-planner.aspx to find your best route through Vancouver’s bike-friendly streets. To get to Granville Island, you can also take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.
Taxi Taxis can be found outside the Granville Island Public Market.
As this is a pandemic year, please be sure to check service restrictions or guidelines directly with your transport service providers. We encourage folks to wear masks and to follow social distancing protocols during your commute to the Fringe. Check out the maps on the next page for all venue locations.

The Fringe is accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station through downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. The #84 stops on 4th Avenue and Fir Street, a 650m walk from the Island. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a 700m walk through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe.
Day parking is temporarily free on Granville Island. Overnight or extended parking is only allowed in the Old Bridge St. Indoor Parking Lot. Register for overnight parking by calling 604-666-6655 from Monday to Friday or 604-315-3003 on weekends. For directions to the parking lot and more information, visit granvilleisland.com/ parking-information-0.
The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. The Aquabus operates from 8am-8pm daily with boats every 15 minutes. Meanwhile, False Creek Ferries sails every 5 minutes from downtown Vancouver to Granville Island, and every 15 minutes on all other routes.
Boat If you’ve got your own boat or other water-based form of transportation, free three-hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis. Register with security at 604-315-3003.
Many Aquabuses are wheelchair accessible; however, the docks at Spyglass Place and at the Plaza of Nations are not. Some ramps are steeper at low tide. Please use caution. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

Join us for an online meet-up with past, present, and future BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) Fringe Artists and community members! For example, losses and gains. How does that statement resonate for you? • How do you foresee a shift in your artistic practice? Bring your pen and paper, your laptop, or whatever you need to get writing! Bring your own picnic lunch and experience an inspiring writing journey while taking in a little slice of sunshine. In 2015, Ruby Slippers Theatre approached Playwrights Guild of Canada and The Vancouver Fringe Festival with the idea to showcase dramatic readings of five new plays written and directed by diverse female-identifying theatre artists. Thus, Advance Theatre was born. RST’s radically inclusive vision is a world where diversity is celebrated through a deeper understanding of each other. So our Advance Theatre Series is part of our larger, ongoing efforts that reflect our vision and mission to champion and celebrate diversity in the playwrights, directors, and actors we work with. For 2020, it is presented in partnership with Ruby Slippers Theatre, Playwrights Theatre Centre, Playwrights Guild of Canada and Savage Society. Curated by Tai Amy Grauman (Métis, Cree, and Haudenosaunee), these works showcase dramatic readings of plays written by Indigenous women. Admission by donation in advance online, or at the door. Thanks to our Volunteers 2020 has been a crazy ride for all of us. Although our world has changed and our lives have been impacted, let’s not forget all the positive things that happened this year, like the extra time we have for watching Netflix and baking bread! More importantly, we saw communities come together during these challenging times, like the daily 7pm cheer for healthcare workers, and YOU, our beloved Fringe volunteers, coming out to help us make the 2020 Vancouver Fringe Festival possible! The Festival looks different this year, but one thing that remains the same is the fact that we cannot do this without our volunteers. So, thank you for all of your support, love, and laughter. We can’t wait to make Theatre for Everyone possible with you for many more years to come!
