MAINSTAGE SHOWS 36 38 40
1. Pick Some Shows! So you found your Program Guide at a Blenz Coffee location and checked out vancouverfringe.com for info, but you’re still lost. There’s so much to see, how can you choose? Here are some common ways: Be Meticulous: Read every single description, and pick your favourites. Be Random: Since all Fringe shows are chosen by a lottery or a first come, first served basis, try that as your method of picking. Choose Based on Your Schedule: Figure out when you can come to the Festival, then check out the Master Schedule on page 31 to see what’s on at that time. Let Buzz Sway You: We’re one of the last stops on the Fringe Circuit, so there are tons of reviews out there. Check our Twitter feed for links (@VancouverFringe). The Georgia Straight also reviews many shows in their Sept. 4 and 11 issues. Plank Magazine also sets out to review every single show in the first week of the Festival. Visit them at PlankMagazine.com or check #PlankBuzz on Twitter. Visit the Fringe Info Centre: Our Info Centre staff and volunteers can give you the scoop on what people are talking about and help you pick a show that you’ll like. See page 8 for location and info!
If you really want to see a particular show, advance tickets are the safest course of action. Visit vancouverfringe.com to purchase tickets online, or swing by the Fringe Box Office at 1398 Cartwright Street on Granville Island between September 1 and 14. If you’re going to see a lot of shows, get a Frequent Fringer Card! We now have Frequent Fringers for four shows, 10 shows, and we even have a special one to celebrate our 30th Anniversary—good for 30 shows! Frequent Fringer Cards are the best deal. See page 8 for details.
3. Being Social (Online & In Line)! Lots of friendships and romances have started at the Fringe! Don’t be shy. Fringers are great resources on what to see at the Festival. Chat with people in line and visit the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar. The Fringe Bar is also a great place to see free performances, live music, and to dance . . . not to mention have tasty beverages from St. Ambroise and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. And we encourage you to be social with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram! See page 62 for links.
4. Come to the Pick and Pick Plus! The Public Market Pick of the Fringe and the Pick Plus run September 17 to 21! See some favourites from Fringe alumni and the best of the Festival. To be the first to find out what the Pick shows are, come to the Fringe Awards Night on September 14. See page 63 for more info on the Pick and Pick Plus and page 25 for info on Awards Night.

Welcome to the Fringe! What a year we have had! We are so pleased with the success of our new Fringe Presents series, where we presented five of the best Fringe shows to you during the winter and spring months. It was fabulous to see many of you at these shows. What a difference it was to enjoy Fringe artists outside of the crazy (but fun!) hustle and bustle of the Festival! We know you liked the shows, because the response was fantastic. We’re continuing Fringe Presents again this year. Watch for the series openers: the amazing Charles Ross and his One-Man Star Wars Trilogy (see page 5 for more details). We know you’ll love it. We’re very excited to be working on another initiative that is going to keep independent theatre in your hearts and minds all year round! Stay tuned. We’ll share more details after the Festival in our newsletter (subscribe online at vancouverfringe.com). Thanks as always to our funders, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and you, our patrons. Each and every one of you make doing all the behind the scenes work so rewarding. Have a great Fringe and we’ll see you in the line ups! Beverley Kort and Jane Westheuser Co-Chairs, First Vancouver Theatrespace Society
On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, we have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything that makes this such a remarkable country— including the bold and innovative arts that strengthen our communities and make our cultural landscape so vibrant. This is why our Government is proud to invest in the Vancouver Fringe Festival, an event that continues to entertain audiences with exciting and inventive performances as it pushes the boundaries of theatre. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate all the organizers, performers, and volunteers who helped bring the 2014 Vancouver Fringe Festival to life. Shelley Glover Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to the 2014 Vancouver Fringe Festival on behalf of the citizens of Vancouver as well as my colleagues on City Council. Vancouver can boast a thriving arts and culture scene and the Fringe Festival is responsible for contributing to this designation. Few of our cultural organizations are as successful as the Vancouver Fringe Festival at showcasing new talent and exposing them to a vast audience of all ages. The Festival has garnered a deserving reputation near and far as an annual must-see event. To the Festival staff, artists, directors, producers, crews, and volunteers, congratulations, and I hope you enjoy many more years of success. To the audiences taking part in this year’s event, I know the Festival will keep you coming back again and again.

Thirty years of creative mayhem at the Fringe! Thirty years ago, who would have thought that the Fringe phenomenon would be so strong? I would say that we owe our longevity to the faith we’ve put in the value of accessibility. We have come to trust that the universe will deliver artistic excellence through our random draw or first come, first served process! This year we add a bit of structure to our otherwise random programming through the Dramatic Works Series and adaptations in our Onsite Program. Both initiatives are based on directing published texts, rather than writing from scratch. While this may seem less creative than the original texts that are the mainstay of the Fringe, I invite you to consider the thousands of interpretive choices involved in staging a text. Directors can influence our experience as much as writers with their choices. As audience members, I invite you to consider your own creative role in crafting a Festival experience. What choices will you make? How will you influence the experience of others? David Jordan Executive Director On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I want to congratulate the 2014 Vancouver Fringe Festival for once again presenting a much-loved theatre extravaganza noted for variety, creativity, and audience appeal. This year the Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, capping a wonderful story of growth and success stretching over three decades. The First Vancouver Theatrespace Society deserves recognition and thanks for sustaining this outstanding theatre arts experience for local residents, theatre enthusiasts from throughout BC, and visitors from around the world. The Festival’s 600-plus volunteers also deserve applause for their dedication with many donating their time year after year. The Government of British Columbia is a proud supporter of the Vancouver Fringe Festival with funding provided through the BC Arts Council, our principal agency for arts development. Our support for the BC Arts Council this year stands at a record-high $24 million. The BC Arts Council helps support BC’s outstanding artists, cultural organizations, and arts festivals. Best wishes to the Fringe for a great 30th anniversary and for continued success in the future. Coralee Oakes Minister of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development Exciting, experimental, and adventurous—prepare to enjoy daring and unpredictable artists and their innovative performances at the 2014 Vancouver Fringe Festival! On behalf of the BC Arts Council, it is my pleasure to congratulate the provincial, national, and international talent taking part in this year’s Festival. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the anticipated 30,000-plus audience members and sincere thanks to the many organizers and volunteers who ensure this popular event enjoys success year after year. Fringe Festivals provide an excellent vehicle for audience engagement and celebrating professional theatre. With funding made possible by the Province of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is pleased to be a long-time supporter of the Vancouver Fringe Festival. Stan Hamilton Chair, BC Arts Council

A one-man reenactment of Star Wars is nerdier —and funnier—than you can possibly imagine! —Spin Magazine Much of Ross’ childhood was spent in a galaxy far, far away, watching Star Wars videos over and over and over again. The result is his hilarious One-Man Star Wars™ Trilogy, where he single-handedly plays all the characters, sings the music, flies the ships, fights the battles, and condenses the plots into just 60 minutes! More Fringe Presents shows will be announced in October. Sign up for our newsletter at vancouverfringe.com so you don’t miss it! For tickets and info, visit vancouverfringe.com. Information
The Fringe is partnering with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to help the 28‚000 people who visit Food Bank depots weekly. We asked Fringe artists, who keep 100% of regular box office revenues, if they wanted to donate a portion of their ticket sales from each performance to the Food Bank and the response has been overwhelming! As you plan your 11 days of Fringe-ing, look for the Food Bank Show symbol in the Program Guide; 3% of the ticket revenue from every show by these artists will be donated to the Food Bank. It’s a great way for you to catch your favourite shows and support a good cause. In addition, your way to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 14 at Performance Works (see page 25 for details) is by making a cash donation to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Why cash? With each dollar in cash, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank can purchase $3 worth of food for the people it supports. It’s way better than cans!

Getting to the Fringe
Granville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean make Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.
Walking and Cycling: The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/ cycling-routes-maps-and-trip-planner.aspx to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can also take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.
Public Transit: The Fringe is easily accessible by bus.
The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station thru downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe, and the #84 stops at West 4th and Fir, just a few blocks away. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.bc.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).
Vancouver Fringe Festival
Ferry: The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:40am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.
10
Boat: If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of
transportation, free three hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.
car2go: car2go is a unique car share program that lets you pick up and
park your car2go pretty much anywhere in the “Home Area,” which includes the Fringe’s home base, Granville Island. As a special deal to Fringers who are new to car2go, you can sign up with the promo code FRINGE0030 and they’ll waive the registration fee and give you 30 free minutes of drive time! There’s dedicated car2go parking on Granville Island too, just to make things easy for you. Keep a look out for car2go to be at the Festival where you can play games to win free drive time too! For more info on car2go, and to sign up and get driving, visit car2goVancouver.com.
Parking: After
7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.
Taxi: Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.

Whether rooting for athletes in the half-trillion dollar North American sports industry as they bounce them, kick them, or hit them; ranting at them for malfunctioning in a romantic situation; or sitting on a globular one orbiting the sun at 111,000km/h, the role Balls play in our lives is profound. The playwright/actor shares a hilarious and poignant perspective on his relationship with the spherical objects and how they shaped, transformed, and ultimately saved him.
Is finding true love impossible for a divorced woman in her 50s? After trying to date older men in their 60s, Nina meets Gerry, an exciting man 20 years her junior. When they begin a relationship, the sparks fly in more ways than one. Unexpected judgments, surprising turns, and double standards are exposed in this funny and revealing play. Starring Jessie Award winning actress Susinn McFarlen. Directed by Lynna Goldhar Smith.

In the theatre of our lives, we all look for deus ex machina, god from the machine, to solve our problems. So why not in a parking lot too? Somewhere far away, the glow of a parking lot Virgin Mary shrine attracts the desperate, ridiculous, and the mundane, who all come to confess, sing, and wait for a miracle in this tragicomic, one-woman, musical show.
England’s well-loved comedy duo (of 2 for Tea) bring you their new comedy. The Hatter
Drinking Well Toronto, Canada Playwright: Morgan Jones Phillips emergencymonologues.com
Spired Theatre Richmond, Canada Playwright: Andrew Wade andrewwade.ca
A storytelling adventure about being a paramedic. In his own animated and energetic way, Morgan tells true stories based on his 12 years of EMS experience. You’ll hear about the gritty, ridiculous, bizarre, and true side of the “emergencies” that don’t make the news. It’s hard to believe how hard you’ll laugh at tales of blood, vomit, and poo.
The Hatter is the story of a man trying desperately to get home. After Alice’s adventures, the Hatter lost his madness and now finds himself exiled from Wonderland. And stuck. Here. In our world. Won’t you help him? Come join the tea party in this performance jammed with storytelling, songs, and a chance to be the Jabberwock. With free tea!

Rivers and railways unite us, divide us. Sometimes they bury us. Lac/Athabasca departs from a lake of ice in the West, stops at a city of oil in the North, and terminates in a river of fire in the East, connecting the tales of lives lived and lost on the waterways and tracks, and the lines on the map in between.
Delve into the eccentric life and mysterious death of “Mad” King Ludwig II of Bavaria. This one-man show, inspired by historical events, offers a glimpse into his enigmatic world as seen through the eyes of his insane family and loyal admirers.

Johnny Cash. Janis Joplin. Jim Morrison. A life on the road takes its toll on people—watch what it does to an entire family. The Chariot Cities follows the drug addled, lovelorn lives of the Stackhouse family; folk icon and father Jack, his legendary sweetheart Wendy, and their kids: upand-comer Julian and his indy-rock sister Beata, in a desperate quest to heal their past, define their present, and find harmony in the midst of a pivotal family disaster. With Jeff Gladstone, Steven Greenfield, Shantini Klaassen, Chris King, Alison Ward, and Andy Toth.
A celestial Oscar Wilde tells the story of his life in the form of a lecture, using theatrical and multimedia techniques. Wilde said, “I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works.” This play explores how Oscar Wilde could have put his genius in his work by telling the story of his life.

Definition of Time
Fake Wigs
Iris Lau Vancouver, Canada Concept / Choreographer: Iris Lau When time is not only a conceptually existing. Time is the container that is full of memories, fragrance, voice, thought, and emotion. When we’re going to define time, time will deviate from its definition. This is a dance, but also a theatre. This is fragmental, but narrative. It is a collective reality, which may or may not exist.
Hobo Bride Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Ryan Hoben Fake Wigs chronicles the final days of a fictional ‘90s grunge band on the last leg of their Eastern US tour. As the band gets closer and closer to their NYC showcase at the Bowery, things start to fall apart as the tight knit group succumbs to the pressures of success and dysfunction.

Funny, beautiful, and unique, with handmade layered projections, puppetry, masks, and original music.

A singin’, dancin’, flesh-eatin’, toe-tapper from the twisted comic mind of Trey Parker (South Park and The Book of Mormon). Hilariously ridiculous, sometimes raunchy, possibly offensive—it’s a musical sure to tempt your taste buds. Junk! is a musical with an original score played on original instruments made from junk. Melissa stumbles into a scrapyard and is immersed in a fantastical world where a wheelbarrow bass, a garbage can cello, PVC tubing, and more trash form an orchestra that tickles the imagination while redefining the meaning of junk.
A mysterious trunk sits on the peak of a mountain at the end of the universe. Out of the trunk come the clown siblings Victoria, Frank, and Mango. They have brought with them the ashes of their dear, departed mother, whose last wish was to be scattered across the void. The clowns trip, fall, and tumble through the stages of grief.
From its soft, weeping ballads to its heart-thumping upbeat songs, Junk! is a musical adventure unlike any you’ve experienced before. “One man’s garbage is another man’s gold... ”

A group of boys are suddenly thrown into the wilderness. All adult authority removed, total freedom. But they must find a way to survive together. The core story of Lord of the Flies still resonates. Youth is an island where roles and rules are in question. Why do we go to the dark side? How do we choose to be good? What will we choose when the crowd breaks bad?
Industry: the Food Must Go Out is a fast paced comedy starring two of Vancouver’s award winning Fringe comedians who use personal stories to expose the comic, tragic, tasty, and messy truths about working in a restaurant. Performed in an actual restaurant with the bar open! Come see what earned these comedians 5-star reviews at Fringes across Canada.
Join 23 artists as they explore the differences between past and present day socializing. You will be immersed in an interactive experience that takes over the Backstage Lounge. With something to see in every corner, you’ll want to put your cell phone down for a while.

This production is set on The Master, an 85-foot wooden boat. Receding ice levels off the coast of Greenland have revealed that an area thought to be part of the mainland is actually a separate island. This discovery mirrors a growing rift between the island’s discoverer and his increasingly distant family, set adrift after a catastrophic loss. Ice figures prominently in Greenland, Nicolas Billon’s quietly disarming drama from Canada about a family cracked apart by a fatal accident. The story unfolds as three subtly connected monologues.

On a secluded Greek island, an American expatriate pursues his passions: winemaking and his breathtaking young wife. Then, on the eve of Reagan’s inauguration, the first tasting of the new wine is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of August’s former lover. Inspired by Greek tragedy, Lascivious Something combines evocative language with sympathetic yet deeply flawed characters straight out of Euripides—all in a decidedly absurdist twist. Brought to you by Fringe Alums Sarah Rose and Lori Watt (Lost In Twine, 2012 Onsite).
