HOW TO
FRINGE:
1. Choose Your Shows!
You found a Program Guide at Blenz Coffee and checked vancouverfringe.com, but you feel lost. How can you choose when there’s 110 show? • Let Buzz Sway You: We’re one of the last stops on the Fringe Circuit, so there are tons of reviews out there. Check our Twitter feed for links (@VancouverFringe). The Georgia Straight also reviews many shows in their Sept. 8 and 15 issues. • Choose Based on Your Schedule: Figure out when you can come to the Festival, then check out the Master Schedule on page 30 to see what’s on at that time. • Be Meticulous: Read every single description and pick your favourites. • Be Random: Fringe shows are chosen by lottery or on a first come, first served method—so just go with the flow. • Visit the Fringe Info Centre: Our Info Centre staff and volunteers can give you the scoop on what people are talking about and help you pick a show that you’ll like. See page 6 for more info!

INFORMATION
WELCOME TO THE FRINGE We have a new mission statement: “Cultivating artists and audiences to create an open and vibrant independent theatre community.” Now it’s time to pursue it like a Granville Island seagull on a bagel! We’re starting by developing our Awards with even more support for career development through the new Mollie Bradley Award. And of course our second season of Theatre Wire (have you bought your subscription yet?)! We have several new board and staff members we’ve recruited to help us pursue our strategic objectives of year round audience development, diversity, and operations sustainability. We’ve got some ambitious ideas and an excellent team to take us there. Thank you to everyone—artists and audience—who inspire us to continue to deepen our work in this community. And thank you to all our sponsors, donors, and government funders who believe in our vision of Theatre for Everyone! Happy Fringe,
As you may be aware, the Vancouver Fringe is part of a North American organization that protects the Fringe trademark in Canada and furthers the Fringe movement throughout North America by strengthening existing Festivals and mentoring new Festivals. I have the privilege of serving as the Executive Director here in Vancouver as well as volunteering as the president of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals. This means I draw on the vibrancy of our local theatre scene as well as the Fringe movement in North America for inspiration. People often ask me if I have been to the mother of all Fringe Festivals, Edinburgh. I haven’t! It takes place in August, which is quite a busy time in Vancouver, preparing for our September launch! But I know that some day I must go and see Fringe mecca in the flesh. Until then… In November this year, the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals plays host to the Fringe World Congress in Montreal. This event, created by the Edinburgh Fringe, is a meeting for Fringe producers from around the world. Typically held in Edinburgh, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe, this year’s event comes to Canada to see what makes us tick. The Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals has created a unique but simple recipe for Fringe success—even the Mother of all Fringe Festivals, Edinburgh, wants to know what’s in the special sauce. If you’re a regular participant at a CAFF Festival in Canada or the US, you know that we don’t keep our ingredients secret: we pull the artists out of a hat, we give them 100% of net revenues, we keep the tickets cheap, and we tie the whole thing up in a great big party! Easy. We are looking forward to sharing with the world and showing off for Mama Fringe! Think global, Fringe local. And thanks to Fringers far and wide for a lifetime of inspiration. Fringefully yours,
David Jordan
Executive Director, Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society President, Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals
Andrew Westman
President, Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society Welcome to the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival!
On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I would like to welcome all performers, volunteers, and audience members to the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Unique festivals like the Vancouver Fringe help grow BC’s creative economy. Fringe Festivals play an important role in developing B.C.’s creative sector, which helps drive the BC Jobs Plan and contributes to healthy and vibrant communities. The Vancouver Fringe is an impressive concentration of theatrical performance that the Province is proud to support. With more than 700 performances by more than 90 artists in 11 days, the Vancouver Fringe will be sure to engage and entertain all of you. As an event that has been sharing artistic experiences with so many citizens for over 30 years, this Festival helps make British Columbia a great place to live, work, and play.
Arts and culture bring us together, open us up to new ideas, and allow us to discover new talents. The Government of Canada is proud to be part of events, like this much-loved festival, that give Canadians the chance to experience the arts in their communities. Every year, the Vancouver Fringe Festival invites us to see the best independent and experimental theatre from the region and beyond. This is a chance for audiences to let themselves get swept away by the talent and originality of artists who are passionate about their work. As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I would like to thank the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society and everyone who helped make this year’s Festival a success, both on stage and behind the scenes. Thank you for making such a wonderful contribution to Vancouver’s cultural vitality.
Mélanie Joly
Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
Thank you to the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society for producing the Vancouver Fringe, and to the volunteers, partners, and artists who are integral to the Festival’s success, providing theatre for everyone!
Peter Fassbender
Minister of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development
Vancouver Fringe Festival
On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend a warm welcome to everyone attending the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival.

As Mayor, I am very proud of Vancouver’s reputation as a major centre for performing arts and culture. The Fringe Festival is one of the few cultural organizations in Vancouver that is so successful at showcasing new talent. Thanks to the Festival’s producers, the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society, it continues to be a favourite among Vancouverites who eagerly await the start of the performances each year. Congratulations to all the staff and over 500 volunteers who work so hard to create a successful Festival. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.
Brave, bold, exhilarating, and engaging, the Vancouver Fringe Festival is a veritable creative feast for theatre lovers craving the unpredictability and excitement of experimental theatre. From September 8 to 18, this much-loved annual event will feature daring artists and original acts onto the stage to prod, provoke, and entertain. Thank you to all of the organizers and more than 500 volunteers that work so hard in support of this Festival. This ongoing dedication not only creates an important vehicle that sparks innovation and pushes creative boundaries, but that also provides enjoyment to more than 40,000 attendees throughout the 700-plus performances. Year after year, the success of this cultural gem adds greatly to the vitality and dynamism of British Columbia’s arts scene while helping support the region’s creative economy. With funding made possible by the Government of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is pleased to continue its longtime support of the Vancouver Fringe Festival and professional theatre.

SUPPORT
The Fringe is partnering with Performing Arts Lodges Vancouver (PAL) to help Vancouver performing arts veterans with affordable housing in a vibrant community setting. PAL offers an innovative solution for members of the professional arts and allied industries who can often lose touch with the lively collective that underpins the artistic efforts we enjoy. It provides safe, affordable homes, and a supportive dynamic environment where residents can stay active and creative.
INFORMATION
You & the Fringe
We invited Fringe artists to donate a portion of their ticket sales from each performance to PAL and we had a great response!
As you plan your 11 days of Fringeing, look for the PAL symbol. 3% of the ticket revenue from these shows will be donated to PAL. It’s a great way for you to catch your favourite shows and support a good cause. Plus, to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 18 at Performance Works (see page 59 for details) make a cash donation at the door to PAL Vancouver. Thanks in advance for supporting this great organization!

Granville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, live theatres, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere surrounded by mountains and ocean make Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.
WALKING AND CYCLING:
The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit vancouver.ca/streetstransportation/cycling-routes-maps-and-trip-planner.aspx to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information.
PARKING: After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.
INFORMATION
GETTING TO THE FRINGE BOAT:
If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of transportation, free three hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.
PUBLIC TRANSIT:
The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Theatre Station through downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. The #84 stops on 4th avenue and Fir street, a short walk from the Island. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).
TAXI:
Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.
FERRY:
The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:40am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

In his brand new one-man show, “peer reviewed rapper” Baba Brinkman breaks down the politics, economics, and science of global warming in a searing and heartfelt hip-hop manifesto addressing the world’s hottest topic.
Berlin in 1945 still hangs under the shadow of World War II. Victor Frankenstein, a young doctor who left the Nazi medical experiments in Ravensbrück concentration camp tries to make peace with the horrors he has witnessed by trying to bring people back from the dead. However, what he creates is darker than anything he could have ever imagined.

Summer camp, a chance encounter in a café, moving into a basement apartment, and meeting her past on Knight Street: this is Jane’s journey. The story moves through time as Jane faces difficult decisions, gets her heart broken, and seeks out a deadbeat dad while falling in love.
Generation Post Script
When a grumpy Chris is visited on the night before Christmas (or maybe like a week before— honestly it’s a busy time for these ghosts), he wastes most of his time with the first ghost. Now he must decide which of the ghosts he wants to meet before sunrise in order to change his ways.
It is two generations into the future. What is left of humanity survives in space stations in orbit around our planet. Interstellar travel is still not possible and Earth is uninhabitable. A misfit group of college students of the “post script” generation—the first to be born in space—bond over their shared anxieties and a desire to reconcile what happened to the rest of their species.

ADVICE TO LOVE/HATE YOU (AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN) DAT Theatre Company Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Sean Patrick Sonier It doesn’t matter who you are or how you identify, we all go through relationships. This is a flexible love story where the audience gets to offer their advice to help a relationship flourish. Or they can be so bad at giving advice that the couple wants to kill each other. Let’s hope you’re as good as you say you are, Dr. Phil.

TRAGEDY + TIME SERVED = COMEDY
Starting From Scratch Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Mark Hughes
“How much time am I doing?” is a question that Mark Hughes has asked in a couple different contexts. Shining a light on the path from his dark and grim past of street life, addiction, and prison to the introspective and playful present of stand up comedy—never stopping along the way to observe taboos. After all, how can your life be taboo?

THE AFTER AFTER PARTY The After Party Girls Burnaby, Canada Playwrights: Katey Hoffman & Cheyenne Mabberley Jules and Fiona are best friends. That’s because no one else likes them. Jules and Fiona make their own party. That’s because they’re never invited to the real party. The After After Party explores the ruthlessness of high school politics, the all-consuming need to be liked, the omnipresent (whatever that is), and above all, friendship. “If this were a late-night sketch comedy show on the Comedy Network I would subscribe just to be able to watch these two. Forget Saunders and French, meet Hoffman and Mabberley.” —Mark Robins, Vancouver Presents

THE NEW CONFORMITY Cause & Effect Circus Sunday, Sept. 25 at 5:45pm at Performance Works
Three of the west coast’s favourite jugglers team up to create an award winning show that is a theatrical social commentary packed with high level circus skills. The show brings to light a universal struggle of the modern age: the comfort of conformity versus the freedom of individuality all told through tightly choreographed prop manipulation, martial arts, and physical theatre. “Clever and compelling.” —Times Colonist “Transcends circus performance.” —The Marble “Had the audience laughing and clapping, bringing them to their feet at the end.” —Robyn Spilker, CFUV Victoria
GOD IS A SCOTTISH DRAG QUEEN IV
Written by Mike & Chantelle Delamont Performed by Mike Delamont Sunday, Sept. 25 at 7:30pm at Performance Works Vancouver’s favourite deity returns with an all new show! God, dressed in a floral power suit is back to skewer everything from politics to the platypus in an unforgettable new hour of comedy! “Made me feel the need to cross myself after laughing so hard!” —Orlando Sentinel
VancouverFringe.com
From “Fringe god” TJ Dawe (co-creator of One Man Star Wars and One Man Lord of the Rings) and Kerry Ipema (PostSecret: the Show), this tribute takes audiences through a laughter-infused version of all six seasons of the beloved show. All our favourite characters come to life as they brunch, banter, argue, and swoon over men and Manolos. For any fan of the show, this will provide a great reminder of why this series and its characters have stayed so firmly in women’s hearts and minds.
