MASTER SCHEDULE

30

Welcome to the 31st Vancouver Fringe Festival! We know the Fringe can be overwhelming, so here are some tips on how to Fringe:

1. PICK SOME SHOWS! So you found your Program Guide at a Blenz Coffee location and checked out vancouverfringe.com for info, but you’re still lost. There’s so much to see, how can you choose? Here’s some common ways: Be Meticulous: Read every single description and pick your favourites. Be Random: Since all Fringe shows are chosen by a lottery or a first come, first served method, try that as your method of picking. Choose Based on Your Schedule: Figure out when you can come to the Festival, then, check out the Master Schedule on page 30 or download the Theatre Wire app to see what’s on at that time. Let Buzz Sway You: We’re one of the last stops on the Fringe Circuit, so there are tons of reviews out there. Check our Twitter feed for links (@VancouverFringe). The Georgia Straight also reviews many shows in their Sept. 10 and 17 issues. Visit the Fringe Info Centre: Our Info Centre staff and volunteers can give you the scoop on what people are talking about and help you pick a show that you’ll like. See page 6 for more info!

Chat with people in line and visit the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar. The Fringe Bar is also a great place to see free performances, live music, and to dance . . . not to mention have tasty beverages from Big Rock and Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. And we encourage you to be social with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram! See page 62 for links.

4. COME TO THE PICK AND PICK PLUS! 2. GET YOUR TICKETS & MEMBERSHIPS!

VancouverFringe.com

INFORMATION

WELCOME TO THE FRINGE It’s Fringe time! I am so privileged to be involved with the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society (FVTS), the producers of the Vancouver Fringe. Over the past five years, I have learned much about our local theatre community and the artists, the technicians, the patrons, and the volunteers. I have a deep appreciation for your energy, passion, and commitment. Together, we have what it takes to truly realize our vision of Theatre for Everyone. Our community has inspired the Board to redefine what we do and who we do it for. FVTS is helping a diverse community make, share, and love theatre. Thank you to each of you: our connected and diverse community of artists, donors, volunteers, staff, sponsors, funders, and audience members. You have made the Fringe the community event that it is today. I look forward to chatting with you at the Festival! Happy Fringe everyone!

Jane Westheuser

Chair, First Vancouver Theatrespace Society

Welcome to the 2015 Vancouver Fringe Festival! As we approach the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, let’s celebrate everything that makes Canada strong, proud, and free—including our vibrant performing arts and the creativity and originality that fuel the ongoing renewal of our cultural landscape. Our Government understands the importance of innovation in the arts, which is why we are proud to support the Vancouver Fringe Festival. This event expands the horizons of theatre and lets visitors experience imaginative works by both established and emerging artists. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the organizers, performers, and volunteers who have worked so hard to ensure the success of this year’s Festival. Enjoy the shows!

The word “fringe” means “the edge, the margin, the outskirts.” Although Fringe Festivals came from a history of being outsiders or unwanted guests, we have put ourselves right in the middle of our communities. To us, Fringe means “togetherness” and “belonging.” Artist, volunteer, audience, and organizer—we are all committed to this new definition of Fringe. This year we welcome new Fringe Festivals in small cities like Lethbridge, Alberta, and North Bay and Guelph in Ontario. On behalf of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, I welcome our new festivals. We know that these communities, like the rest of our Fringe family, will experience the kind of wholeness that can happen when we invite in the “unwanted guests” and when the “outsiders” become the heart of our communities! Here in Vancouver, we are fortunate enough to have a long Fringe history. Our community is strong with artists, volunteers, audiences, sponsors, and donors. We are proud to take the strength of our community into new year-round initiatives like Theatre Wire that will elevate independent theatre year-round. With your involvement, we are making more “Theatre for Everyone” happen!

David Jordan

Executive Director, First Vancouver Theatrespace Society President, Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals

On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I would like to welcome everyone to the Vancouver Fringe Festival, one of the city’s eclectic theatre festivals. With more than 700 performances taking place over 11 days, the Vancouver Fringe Festival offers exciting, live entertainment that explores new realms of creativity and imagination, while providing a platform for discussion between artists and audiences. Community festivals, such as the Vancouver Fringe Festival, showcase British Columbia’s vibrant and dynamic arts and culture sector. These festivals also provide an economic boost for local businesses, helping to make our province a great place to live, work, and invest. In recognition of the tremendous social, economic, and health returns event hosting brings to a community, our government has recently announced the development of a five-year hosting strategy, along with a $250,000 one-time funding opportunity—EventHostBC—to assist communities and organizations in their capacity to promote B.C. as the destination of choice for sport and cultural events. I want to recognize and thank the First Vancouver Theatrespace Society, as well as the more than 600 volunteers for their commitment and hard work in bringing this year’s event together. Once again their vision has created the fun, spontaneous atmosphere that the Vancouver Fringe Festival is known for. I wish the very best to all participants and visitors. I hope you have a fantastic time and continued success in the coming years.

Coralee Oakes

Minister of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development

Shelley Glover

Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

Vancouver Fringe Festival

On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2015 Vancouver Fringe Festival.

4

We are very proud of Vancouver’s reputation as a major centre for performing arts and culture. The Fringe Festival is one of the few cultural organizations in Vancouver that is so successful at showcasing new talent. It has become a favourite among Vancouverites and we eagerly await the start of the Festival and its many days of performance each year. Congratulations to the Festival staff and volunteers for yet another year of success and hard work. To all the artists, directors, producers, crews, and audiences taking part in this year’s event, I trust you will find the Festival to be entertaining and enlightening.

Gregor Robertson Mayor of Vancouver

If you can imagine it, it will likely find its way onto the stages of the Vancouver Fringe Festival. From the adventurous to the audacious, this engaging 11-day theatre event features daring artists and original acts. With audience attendance estimated at more than 40,000, the 2015 Festival has attracted some of the world’s most innovative theatre talent, armed with bold material and engaging performances. Thanks to the organizers and more than 600 dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure this popular event enjoys success year after year. Your work adds greatly to the vitality and dynamism of arts and culture in British Columbia. With funding made possible by the Government of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is pleased to continue its long-time support of the Vancouver Fringe Festival and professional theatre.

Stan Hamilton

Chair, BC Arts Council

SUPPORT

The Fringe is partnering with Performing Arts Lodges Vancouver (PAL) to help Vancouver’s performing arts industry veterans with affordable housing in a vibrant community setting.

INFORMATION

You & the Fringe

PAL offers an innovative solution for members of the professional arts and allied industries who often lose touch with the lively collective that underpins the artistic efforts we enjoy. It provides safe affordable homes and a supportive dynamic environment where residents stay active and creative. We invited Fringe artists to donate a portion of their ticket sales to PAL Vancouver and we had a great response!

As you plan your 11 days of Fringe-ing, look for the PAL Vancouver symbol. 3% of the ticket revenue from these shows will be donated to PAL. It’s a great way for you to catch your favourite shows and support a good cause. Plus, to get into the Fringe Awards Night on September 20 (see page 27 for details) make a cash donation to PAL. Thanks in advance for supporting this great organization!

GETTING TO THE FRINGE

Granville Island is the Vancouver Fringe Festival’s main hub! Most Mainstage venues, the Fringe Box Office, and the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar are on Granville Island. With restaurants, the Public Market, galleries, art studios, and shops, the Island offers a lot to do between Fringe shows. Its relaxed atmosphere makes Granville Island the perfect stage for outstanding theatre at the Fringe. Located in the heart of Vancouver, Granville Island (under the south side of the Granville Street Bridge) is easily accessible through a variety of means.

WALKING AND CYCLING: The seaside path is always a treat and gets you right to Granville Island and the Fringe! A bicycle is also a fantastic way to navigate the Fringe. Visit vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/cycling-routes-maps-andtrip-planner.aspx to find your best route. These routes are also suitable for people on foot. You can take your bike on the Aquabus’ Cyquabuses for free! Bikes are only allowed on the Cyquabus and your best chance to catch one is to board from the Hornby Street dock. See the Ferry section below for more information. car2go:

car2go is a unique car share program that lets you pick up and park your car2go pretty much anywhere in the “Home Area,” which includes the Fringe’s home base, Granville Island. As a special deal to Fringers who are new to car2go, you can sign up with the promo code FRINGE1530 and they’ll reduce the registration fee to $15 and give you 30 minutes of drive time! There’s dedicated car2go parking on Granville Island too, just to make things easy for you. Keep a look out for car2go at the Festival where you can play games to win drive time too! For more info on car2go, and to sign up and get driving, visit Vancouver.car2go.com.

FERRY:

The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries operate from approximately 6:40am to 10:30pm daily and make for a lovely way to get to and from Granville Island. For more information including schedules, tickets, and maps, visit the theaquabus.com and granvilleislandferries.bc.ca.

BOAT:

If you’ve got your own boat or other water based form of transportation, free three hour visitors’ moorage is located behind the Granville Island Public Market. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

PUBLIC TRANSIT:

The Fringe is easily accessible by bus. The #50 bus goes straight to Granville Island from Waterfront Station thru downtown along Granville Street, or from the Olympic Village Station. Otherwise the #4, #7, #10, #14, or #16 all stop on the south side of the Granville Street bridge, where a leisurely stroll through the Granville Street Bridge Pedestrian Underpass and across the Granville Loop Park will find you in the heartland of the Fringe. For more personalized transit information and trip planning go to translink.ca or call 604.953.3333 (from 6:30am to 11:30pm).

PARKING:

After 7:00pm, parking is free and without time constraint in most parking spots on Granville Island! Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, free time limited parking is available in designated areas around the Island. During those hours, a vehicle may park for a maximum of three hours (and in certain spots, only one hour). Moving to another spot is permitted as long as the total time parked on the Island does not exceed three hours. If you want to extend your stay, we recommend that you move into a pay lot and purchase the extra time needed. Vehicles parked overtime will be ticketed.

TAXI:

Taxis are often found outside the Granville Island Public Market.

Phantom Signal

Featuring Andrew Bailey, Jayson McDonald, and Tara Travis

We are thrilled to present the inaugural performance of Phantom Signal, an homage to the old-timey, creaky, old cobwebby radio programs recorded live! It’s a tip of the hat to stories that got under your skin and sent you to bed with the lights on. Prepare for a bloodcurdling tale based on actual speculation, performed with all the trappings of the great studio anthologies of yester-century! At turns hilarious and horrifying, but mostly hilarious, and always horrifying. Special guests will be joining Andrew, Jayson, and Tara—whether they’re from this realm or the next is the question. 10:30pm

BOOKWORM

GIANT INVISIBLE ROBOT SEARCHING FOR DICK

Written, created, and performed by Corin Raymond

Written and performed by Jayson McDonald

A hit at the 2012 Vancouver Fringe Festival, Bookworm is the story of a father reading to his son, growing up in a library, Spiderman, Ray Bradbury, and meeting the Minotaur for the first time just outside of Wawa. Warning: this show will open your heart.

Russel is a terminally shy young man who’s had an imaginary friend all his life. Unfortunately, that imaginary friend is Giant Invisible Robot who is programmed to destroy. Join Russel as he attempts to find love, bury the past, and prevent his Giant Robot from destroying Earth’s cities one by one. “Creative, inventive, unique—this show is why you go to the Fringe.” —Vue Magazine “Jam packed with observant humour and emotional honesty.” —Vancouver Sun “One of the best pieces of theatre that I have seen in a long, long while.” —Plank Magazine

Written by Jim and Tara Travis

with verbatim text from visits with psychic mediums

Tara talks to dead people. Twelve years ago, she received a message that would send her on an unforgettable adventure. Witness magical puppetry, eat delicious brownies (recipe courtesy of the spirit world), and follow Tara as she searches for Dick. From the performer of Monster Theatre’s hit Til Death: The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Based on a true story. “…an incredible journey, and Travis is rare talent.” —the Georgia Straight “Ouija board says, see this one.” —the Vancouver Sun

GOD IS A SCOTTISH DRAG QUEEN III Written, created, and performed by Mike Delamont From Canadian Comedy Award Nominee Mike Delamont comes God Is A Scottish Drag Queen III! Vancouver’s favourite deity returns in an all new hour of comedy to skewer everything from Moses to Muhammed. “At only an hour… it’s never enough!” —Orlando Weekly “We just can’t get enough of the almighty.” —Orlando Sentinel “It would be a sin to miss!” —Watermark

VancouverFringe.com

“Raymond has impeccable timing, and his performance is at once intimate, openhearted, and evangelical.” —the Georgia Straight “Corin Raymond is a storyteller who by the end of the night you’ll have known your whole life.” —the Globe and Mail “Magic.” —the Edmonton Journal

Clayton Jevne & Theatre Inconnu Victoria, Canada Adapted and performed by Clayton Jevne based on the work Falstaff by Robert Nye. theatreinconnu.com This adaptation of Nye’s acclaimed novel is a wild romp through the life of Sir John. Jack takes us into bars, battles, and bedrooms—reliving the ecstasies of the carnal and the horrors of the carnage. Falstaff is a mercurial combination of Shakespeare’s buffoon and the historic figure of John Fastolf. Advisory: Nye writes for the modern ear. “Amazing story teller.” —CBC “Masterful ... revealed a more sympathetic side of the buffoon without losing his bawdy edge.” —Monday Magazine

Peachy Keen Productions Winnipeg, Canada Playwrights: Sydney Hayduk & Elsa Reesor Taylor peachyk.ca Standing tall is a high security Village. Inside live 200 people struggling for their lives. Lara & Laura Langley, Canada Playwrights: Lara Deglan & Laura Shortt

Unlikely Heroes Collective Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Martin Schobel facebook.com/edgeofthefringe

Quack Quack Penis is about friendship, love, and the struggles one faces in the pursuit of happiness... Now that the standard crap is out of the way, Quack Quack Penis is about two broads trying to carve their own path through life, treading between DILLIGAFing (NOT giving a f*ck what others think) and GAFing (giving a f*ck what others think).

After decades of chasing empty goals, a man steps into the desert of his soul to excavate the artifacts of a life lived in a dream. The Edge is the highly intimate and fantastical journey of a person meeting themselves for the first time. Raunchy puppets, secretive shadows, and heaving bodies will guide you as you explore the dark and exhilarating edges of human experience. This is Martin Schobel’s first show in 15 years and is the unexpected sequel to his first play which debuted at the Fringe in 1995. Join the story now, online.

A mohawked centaur snorts as the world burns down behind her; an antlered Cleopatra glides by with insurmountable beauty; a fashion show gets stuck to a wall; and a family of ungulates sit patiently awaiting their delivery dinner. hoof is inspired by herd behavior, mythic beasts, the melodrama of portraiture, and the banality of TV dinners. “The melodramatic wordplay canters on and we eat it up ... funny, strange, and charming ... hoof has a serious humour, a humour of straight faces.” —Robert Leveroos, Vandocument

Going On

Poiema Productions Leduc, Canada Playwright: Kenneth Brown poiemaproductions.com

Going On Productions Halifax, Canada Playwright: Elizabeth Richardson elizabeth-richardson.com

Two people seek balance in their world after suffering personal loss. Having adopted her father’s disciplined, intellectual approach to life, a daughter finds herself having to grow a new heart at exactly the same moment her hidebound old father has to.

A unique, humorous, and insightful look into the paradoxical life of a Buddhist actress. Drawing from her own life, Elizabeth counterpoints her struggles as a budding actress working with Peter O’Toole with her later challenges as a Buddhist on a three-year meditation retreat. We see art and life collide as characters from Noel Coward’s Present Laughter, Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, and more fill the stage. Revealing her challenging and heartbreaking relationship with her mother, the show is funny, vulnerable, and courageous.

From the writer of Anatolia Speaks, Spiral Drive, and Letters in Wartime, Balance 2.1 will be opening at the Winnipeg Fringe this summer. Ken and Candice’s last show, Anatolia Speaks, received rave review across the country.

From four-time Best of Fest winner and professional phone sex operator Tonya Jone Miller (Threads  —Winnipeg Free Press,  —CBC) comes a reality-based, partially-improvised solo show about oral skills, aural thrills, and discovering there might just be a little bit of pervert in all of us.

“Several laugh-out-loud moments ... But the show’s momentum relies not on mere erotic absurdity. Rather than reducing her clients to caricatures, Miller humanizes them.”

It’s a tremendous time of change and reflection. Saturn Returns is an entertaining and moving collection of women’s personal stories. Come along for the ride!

Local Vancouver artist, Darcy McFadden, has crafted a new musical and enlists a troupe of local artists to bring Joe back to English Bay for the Fringe!

Starring Christine Lippa, Jenn Griffin, Sarah Dawn Pledge, Rae Clark, Jamie Chrest, Jennifer Perrin, Barbara Beall, Briana Rayner, Sindy Angel, and special guest Ellie Harvie.

Three of the west coast’s favourite jugglers team up to create an awardwinning show that blends theatrical circus with social commentary. This brings to light a universal struggle of the modern age: the comfort of conformity versus the freedom of individuality, all told through tightly choreographed prop manipulation, martial arts, and physical theatre.

The O.C.: The Musical is an unauthorized parody of the hit teen drama FOX series. It follows the life of Ryan Atwood, a troubled 16-yearold bad boy who is abandoned by his parents but is given a second chance by his attorney, Sandy Cohen. Spilling Family Secrets

SavageCreampuff Productions Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Priscilla Costa moremona.tumblr.com

Goodside Productions Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Susan Freedman susanfreedman.ca

Lighting up a crowd with her luscious bubble butt, Mona Monaé maniacally dances a tense tightrope between devilish provocation, ancestral shame, and childlike vulnerability. She invites self-healing through perversion and slutty-ness... and enjoys sharing. Mona Monaé is a necessary experience that you won’t forget. Enter at your own risk...

At 11, Susan snooped into old love letters her parents wrote to each other beginning when they were 19. She cringed with embarrassment. Today, can the letters spill secrets of their inspiring marriage—and shed light on Susan’s own marital misadventures?

“She is terrifying and delightful at the same time... a really captivating performer.” —Danielle Marleau of Black

“Will make you want to run out and hug those you love.” —CBC Manitoba “Left me breathless and teary eyed.” —Mooney on Theatre (Toronto) “Compelling ... a show worth seeking out.” —Victoria Times Colonist

Susan’s fourth Fringe comedy got 4-star reviews in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Victoria in 2014.

He Roars

Hunger Games: The Musical

ProVan Productions North Vancouver, Canada Playwright: Kirsty Provan

District 13 Productions Richmond, Canada Playwright: Mark Vandenberg

On her wedding day, Eurydice suddenly finds herself soaking wet in the Underworld where she is reunited with her Father. As Orpheus struggles to rescue her, she searches for memories of her own lost love.

“The war isn’t over, Rose. It just isn’t in Afghanistan anymore.”

A priceless pop culture parody of Suzanne Collin’s hit novel and its inevitable film. Watch as Katniss Everdeen takes a stand against the Capitol, while belting out twisted Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and Lorde tunes (to name a few). Experience a ridiculous ride through teenage angst. It’s all the fun of a dystopian death match, now with kicky pop tunes!

Two children navigate the corridors of life, struggling to believe in something greater than the decade-long war that takes them from childhood to something else. Based on interviews with Canadian Soldiers, He Roars is a new play by Vancouver local and Studio 58 graduate Kirsty Provan. “An authentic, bristling account of a deep love shared between a young woman and a Canadian soldier and their mutual loss of innocence.” —Lucia Frangione, Playwright/ Actor
