Braden Judson My VIU experience “What surprised me in my program is how multifaceted things are. Learning about a diversity of topics is the best — you’ve got to enjoy what you learn or you won’t be able to learn it. Ornithology is very multi-faceted, and I had a great prof, learned lots and want to continue to study in this area.”

About Braden •L oved the hands-on learning he got as a volunteer with VIU’s Bird Banding Station •T akes healthy breaks to get out trail running and bird watching •C onsidering graduate school for future studies in ornithology • A graduate of Ladysmith Secondary School Braden expects to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2019

Residences

Your first home away viu.ca/residence

One of the most exciting things about starting university is a chance to live somewhere new. It’s exciting, but it can also be a lot to think about and plan for. VIU’s campus residences bring new experiences with less organizing and planning. You will also be surrounded by a community of like-minded students with instant access to great weekend activities and a long list of fun events in residence, around campus and throughout the region. Each area has a dedicated Community Leader who is a current VIU student and has lived in residence previously. They provide guidance, advice and support to students in their area, making the transition from home to university easier.

Discover a community viu.ca/aboriginal Students and visitors at VIU campuses receive a warm welcome in the Hu’qumi’num language of this region’s First Nations people: “Hay ch qa’sii’em siy’yu mukw mustimuxw — Thank you respected ones of this place.” VIU is situated on the traditional land of the Coast Salish peoples. It is a place where history and traditions are acknowledged, where contributions are valued and where success is celebrated.

Shq’apthut — a gathering place Shq’apthut is home to Services for Aboriginal Students and a welcoming home away from home for Aboriginal students on our Nanaimo campus. Here students can: • Visit with Elders for guidance and assistance • Get help finding accommodations and day care • Access workshops, writing and research opportunities • Participate in and witness traditional culture from our four Vancouver Island nations

‘Su’luqw’a’ Community Cousins Connect with a current Aboriginal VIU student from ‘Su’luqw’a’ Community Cousins. They are a source of support and are here to help you navigate the campus, access resources or sit down for a chat over coffee! Email community.cousins@viu.ca or visit viu.ca/community-cousins

Elders in Residence Elders are one of our most important resources. They provide counselling, support and guidance to all students at VIU and are involved in classroom instruction, teaching traditional protocols and language, and cross-cultural sharing.
