It is for both locals and visitors alike and should prove useful to new Vancouverites as well. So get out and explore the neighbourhoods of Metro Vancouver. You will not be disappointed. Christopher Best

AMBLESIDE VILLAGE

Beautiful Beach Community Below the Mountains Ambleside lies on the waterfront and most of its shops line the streets of Bellevue and the main street of Marine Drive. There are lots of cafes, restaurants, clothing, boutique and specialty food stores. Walking through Ambleside is truly a treat and the beach is only a half block away. A great place to watch the Alaskan cruise ships sailing during summer and the carol ships during Christmas. Ambleside is the first community you encounter on Marine Drive just west of the Lions Gate Bridge. Visit the waterfront parks and the old ferry ticket office which used to sell tickets to passengers going to and coming from Vancouver before the bridge was built. Above Ambleside is the British Properties which was built by the CPR in the 1940s and the reason for building the bridge.

10 ~ Ambleside Pier & Beach Area In the summer, if you get to the pier before 6:00 PM, you can see the cruise ships go by. They’re quite close, so you can make out a lot of details. Also, around 4:30 PM the Royal Hudson Steam Train chugs by. Kids love standing by the track and waving to the people on board. If your kids get bored John Lawson Park (west of pier) and Ambleside Beach (east of pier) are minutes away. What I like most of all though is at dusk when the dock lamps go on. The soft lights glimmer on the water, the air is warm, and you’re fishing--need I say more.www.findfamilyfun.com

16 ~ Macdonald Realty Dundarave Village was once a sleepy residential outpost to Vancouver. Before the Lions Gate Bridge was built people would row over to their summer cottages. The word Dundarave comes from a Gaelic word having reference to a ‘two-oared boat’. The village was named in the early 1900’s after Dundarave Castle in Scotland, the ancestral home of the Macnaghten Clan, by Professor Russell Macnaghten, a Professor of Greek at the University of B.C. Dundarave Village is an ideal place for children with its sandy beach and waterfront playground. The historic Dundarave pier and picturesque milelong seawall are enjoyed year round by both tourists and locals alike.

HISTORIC NEIGHBOURHOODS OF THE PAST ~ 17

10.1011r-20P.jpg Hollyburn Ski Camp (1927 - 1945) “The Oscar Pearson Era” (L-R) Oscar Pearson and Buddy Barker with bear at the Hollyburn Ski Camp, June 17, 1928 (Buddy Barker aka Win Oliver collection, HHS archives)

The Cabin Community On Hollyburn Ridge Cabin building on Hollyburn Ridge became a popular pastime in the late 1920’s after the Hollyburn Ski Camp/Lodge opened in January, 1927. Typically, a group of young people would decide to build a cabin, look for a suitable site close to fresh water and building supplies in the form of flume boards or trees, and then go about building their ‘home on the Ridge’. Lacking skills, many learned through trial and error. Sharing knowledge gained from experience was quite common between cabin groups. In this way, a strong sense of community developed. By 1931, over 200 cabins had been built which caused much concern in the District of West Vancouver. In 1932, Scotty Finlayson, with the approval of the cabin owners on the Ridge, was appointed Park Ranger by the district. Scotty approved sites for cabin building, selected the trees that could be used for construction, collected the annual fees for the leased lots, dealt with ‘domesticated’ bears, and patrolled creeks that supplied West Vancouver with water - all for a monthly salary of $25.00. So began the long and sometimes difficult relationship between the Hollyburn cabin owners and the District of West Vancouver.

18 ~ troll’s for great fish & chips! In 1973, concerned about the future of their heritage cabins and a cherished way of life, cabin owners formed the Hollyburn Ridge Association. Its objectives were to: 1. Protect and preserve the Hollyburn cabin area; 2. Promote the recreational use and public access to the Hollyburn Ridge area; 3. Negotiate with all levels of government to encourage and promote the aims and objectives of the Hollyburn Ridge Association. The Hollyburn Ridge Association’s policy of negotiation rather than confrontation has proved effective, and (for now at least), the threats to the viability of the cabin community have been allayed. While the cabins on Grouse and Seymour have now disappeared, Hollyburn has endured, the only community in the Lower Mainland to do so. Catherine Rockandel, 2006 President of the Hollyburn Ridge Association, speculates on reasons. “Firstly, there were more of them to start with, there was amore active community, so they were more well maintained, and there was strong local and vocal leadership that advocated for their survival and continues to do so through the Hollyburn Ridge Association. . . You often see one community able to organize while another cannot. The biggest reason is the amount of social capital or trust, collaboration through volunteerism and organized community events, individual leadership, etc. Hollyburn was a community.” Hollyburn Heritage Society www.hollyburnheritage.ca

HORSESHOE BAY

Catch A Ferry To The Sunshine Coast The highway ends and ferry travel begins for those heading to Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast and Nanaimo. Home to about 1,000 residents, Horseshoe Bay is actually part of a much larger municipality: the District of West Vancouver, one of Canada’s wealthiest residential communities. Horseshoe Bay’s waterfront fixtures include a ferry terminal with berths for three large ships of the BC Ferries fleet, a marina, shops, restaurants, pubs, and a restful park and playground at the water’s edge. Recreation in the vicinity is more than abundant: boating, kayaking, scuba diving, whale watching, golf and skiing. Grab an ice cream and sit in the park or have lunch at Troll’s Restaurant where the fish and chips are legendary. Visit a First Nation’s Gallery or stay overnight at the local motel just a block from the water. Try our bakery, specialty stores, restaurants and more.

BOWEN ISLAND

Artists Colony Twenty Minutes From Horseshoe Bowen Island is a small island across from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. It takes only 20 minutes to get there by ferry. Around Snug Cove is a 600 acre park called Crippen Park, so there’s a lot to explore. A nice easy walk is to the pretty Bridal Veil Falls and fish ladder (about 10 minutes), or on to Killarney Lake about a 45 minute walk from Snug Cove. About three thousand artists, daily commuters, writers and happy retirees live on Bowen’s 52 sq. kilometers. The ferry pulls into aptly named Snug Harbour, with its historic Union Steamship Company store, its Regional Park information site, and its commercial centre. Stroll the harbour and see artisans in summer. The Pier has good eateries as well.

28 ~ Bowen Island Welcome to Doc’s Restaurant & Pub. We are located on Bowen Island, a short distance from Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. Bowen Island has a long history as a holiday resort destination. A name closely associated with that history is the Union Steamship Company of British Columbia. In the early 1900’s holiday excursionists boarded luxury passenger ships headed for the ‘Happy Isle.’ Their day could be spent at large company picnics, walking the trails around Deep Bay or Killarney Lake or taking a dip in the cool clear waters of Howe Sound. The evenings could be spent dancing at the Dance Pavilion or just enjoying the company of friends. Some stayed the weekend in one of nearly 200 cottages owned by the Union Steamship Company. You can capture a bit of the magic of times past with a visit to our quaint resort. You can walk the same trails that have been traveled for almost a century, or sleep in one of two original Union Steamship cabins. A visit to Doc Morgan’s Restaurant & Pub will give you a taste of the history of the island.

BOWEN ISLAND ~ 29

Bowen Island History

In the first half of the 20th century, life on Bowen was dominated by a resort operated by the Terminal Steamship Company (1900 - 1920) and the Union Steamship Company (1920 - 1962). These companies provided steamer sevice to Vancouver, and the Horseshoe Bay - Bowen Island Ferry began in 1921. When the Union Steamship resort closed in the 1960s the island returned to a quiet period of slow growth. In the 1940s and 1950s, the artists’ colony called Lieben[6] was a retreat for many famous Canadian authors, artists, and intellectuals including Earle Birney, Alice Munro, Dorothy Livesay, Margaret Laurence, A.J.M. Smith, Jack Shadbolt, Eric Nicol and Malcolm Lowry, who finished his last book, October Ferry to Gabriola, there. It is now a National Historic Site of Canada. In the 1980s, real estate pressures in Vancouver accelerated growth on Bowen and currently the local economy is largely dependent on commuters who work on the mainland in Greater Vancouver. Prior to becoming a municipality, Bowen Island was part of the Sunshine Coast Regional District, made up of small communities and municipalities. However, in the 1980s the island transferred to the Greater Vancouver Regional District after a campaign organized by developers and realtors. A campaign to make the island an autonomous municipality was successful after two referendum attempts.

30 ~ Lions Bay Art Gallery The Island has several small businesses including marinas, cafes, gift shops, grocery stores, a pharmacy, restaurants, garden and flower shops, a building supply shop and a Chamber of Commerce. In June 2007, First Credit Union, a full-service bank, opened its doors in Snug Cove. There is also a North Shore Credit Union automated banking machine. Groceries are available at the Snug Cove General Store and the Ruddy Potato Whole Foods Market. Shops are concentrated around Snug Cove and, further into the island, Artisan Square. There are also several restaurants, including The Snug, Miksa, and Tuscany. Bowen Island has a high proportion of artists and artisans, and the Bowen Island Pub on Trunk Road regularly features live music. There is also a 2,746 metre (3,003 yard) 130 Slope rated 9-hole golf course. Rent a kayak and paddle around Snug Cove or venture around the island. Bowen Island Sea Kayaking, on the ferry dock at Snug Cove, 604-947-9266 (info@bowenislandkayaking.com)

DEEP COVE

Affectionately Referred To As ‘the cove’ It is affectionately referred to as ‘the cove’ by the locals. Located at the foot of Mount Seymour, the cove faces due east, fronting on to Indian Arm, itself a branch of Burrard Inlet, which forms Vancouver’s inner harbour. The area is the traditional territory of the TsleilWaututh and Sḵwxwú7mesh, the indigenous, of the Coast Salish First Nations. Deep Cove is 13 kilometres (8 miles) from downtown Vancouver. Poet and novelist Malcolm Lowry and his wife Margerie lived on and off in a squatters shack from 1940 to 1954 here in what is now Cates Park. Lowry won the Governor General’s Award for his novel Under the Volcano.

50 ~ Seymour Art Gallery Osaka Sushi Deep Cove “Best Sushi Restaurant in North Vancouver.” “We ordered dinner boxes A & B, Maki Combo, Cali-rolls, Sunomono, Gomae, saki and beer. Everything was served in a timely manner and our waitress was pleasant, efficient and aniticipated our needs for tea refills, condiments and drinks. The fish was excellent quality and presentation of the dinner boxes was especially appetizing. The California rolls aren’t very large but tasted fine.” DINE HERE Reviews The Seymour Art Gallery, established 1985, is a non-profit public gallery in the heart of Deep Cove, North Vancouver. We are working to establish and maintain an active and financially sustainable art gallery that will foster excellence and promote interest in the arts. We welcome more than 25,000 visitors yearly to our gallery, Gallery Shop, and special events. Along with a busy exhibition schedule, we present performance events — including music, artist demonstrations, interactive art-making, and events for children. The Seymour Art Gallery establishes a high standard in our balanced program of visual and performing arts. The gallery also plays an educational role, by organizing programs for schools and activities for the general public in conjunction with our exhibitions.

Designed like an old chemists shop to fit in with the village flavour of other buildings, Deep Cove Pharmacy is owned by business and life partners Arif Datoo and Fehmina Lalani and their friend Lani Ha. The neighbourhood pharmacy is the first to crop up after the former local pharmacy closed about 40 years ago which signals a return to a more traditional approach to providing pharmaceutical services. The store offers free delivery, blood pressure checks, consultations, medication reviews and advice. “We really want to focus on the patient care,” Datoo says. Deep Cove Crier, Jeanie Keogh.

After 8 years, the walls have more spackle than drywall from my slight obsession with creating an environment worthy of the special things I find. Our clients often tell me they’re not exactly sure what they’ll find when they visit, but they know they’ll find something special. Whether it’s the perfect letterpress card, a gasp-inducing cashmere scarf or the sweetest little gift for your best friend’s new baby ... connecting just the right special thing with just the right nice person is what it’s all about.

Take a ride over on the seabus from Downtown Vancouver to the Lonsdale Quay. Spend an afternoon at the market and browse the boutiques and eateries. Stroll up Lower Lonsdale Avenue and visit the shops on Lonsdale and the side streets. See the new development taking place alongside heritage buildings which are well preserved. Hop on a bus up to Upper Lonsdale. Stroll more shops and visit the eateries. Be sure to look behind you at the view of Vancouver and the harbour. Grouse Mountain is not far away and you can take the gondola up to the top for the most scenic vista available in the lower mainland. In winter you can go skiing. To the east is Seymour Mountain. You can drive up Seymour and see more great views. These mountains have remained virtually untouched since time immortal. Be sure not to miss the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Vancouver’s oldest tourist attraction built in 1889. Watch First Nations carvers at work and walk the bridge for a truly westcoast experience. Visit the Capilano Fish Hatchery designed to restore the dwindling stocks of Coho salmon and Steelhead trout. The Hatchery produces over 1 million Coho, up to 2.5 million Chinook and 10,000-20,000 Steelhead every year.

Try kayaking!

OUR NATURAL HERITAGE ~ 53

Indian Arm Indian Arm is a salt-water fjord that extends about 20 km (12 mi) north from Burrard Inlet. There are no crossings, and road access is limited to the communities on the southern portion of the arm. The steep mountain slopes are so impassable that most have seen no development, despite the proximity to a major city. Indian River, marked by a small dock at the north end of the arm, can be reached by boat from Deep Cove or by a logging road from Squamish.

54 ~ Wigwam Inn

Wigwam Inn on Indian Arm

PHOTO: coutesy www.westcoast paddler.com

The Wigwam Inn, located at the north end of Indian Arm, originally opened as a luxury German Biergarten resort and fishing lodge in 1910. A daily steamship route, using the sternwheeler Skeena, brought customers and supplies to the Inn. The property was operated by Count Gustav Constantin Alvo Van Alvensleben during its “glory days before World War I, and by other operators until 1963. The property was then sold several times, with a somewhat checkered history, including a stint as a gambling casino which led to a raid by the RCMP. Famous guests over the years included two of the richest men in the world, oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller and the great-grandson of fur-trade millionaire John Jacob Astor. The Inn is currently owned and operated by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club as an outstation for club members. There is no public moorage available at the Wigwam docks; reciprocal privileges are not available to members of any other Yacht Clubs.

At KITA Sushi we bridge the old and the new by serving the finest, fresh nigiri and roll sushi in a traditional Japanese setting modeled after the Japanese tea rooms of old. Our fish is flown in daily from all over Japan, and best enjoyed with something from our extensive list of Japanese sake and shochu. You’ve had sushi, but you’ve likely never had it quite like this. Come in, and meet the genuine article... “Cozy and laid-back. This is one of those local hole in the wall joints. I was craving a hot soba noodle bowl but it turns out they don’t offer that on the menu. Just as my lips started to frown on both ends, the owner lady said that she will make it for me, the way she makes it at home for her kids! We also ordered some rolls, tempura, miso soup and donburis.” Sara O.

THE HEIGHTS

Burnaby Heights A Unique Neighbourhood Willingdon Heights is a neighbourhood in Burnaby. It is named after a major Burnaby thoroughfare Willingdon Avenue, connecting North Burnaby with Kingsway and the Metrotown area in the south. The Heights as it is called by locals, runs along Hastings Street from Willingdon to Boundary and is home to a unique and varied collection of businesses. There are several great bakeries and deli’s, a great musical instrument store that still repairs instruments. A Safeway and lots of small stores to keep you busy. This neighbourhood reminds me the most of the Vancouver of old, where everyone shopped in their own quaint little area before the malls and big box stores arrived.

Chickadee is for the chic chick! It is seriously a hidden gem! They carry brands they have at Holts and Aritzia, but in a less pretensious atmosphere. Some stuff is expensive, but truly not everything. The person buying has a great eye for mixing items from all price points. The layout of the store is almost like being in a fashionista’s walk in closet. The selection may not be as wide as other stores but it shows that the owner puts some thought and time into hand picking beautiful pieces of clothing for the boutique. Yelp Reviews

82 ~ Kensington Square Wines Cockney Kings Fish & Chips We are a traditional fish & chips restaurant that brings a taste of the English Coast to the Canadian West Coast! Visit one of our two establishments in Burnaby and New Westminster and taste for yourself! You will find, as many of our loyal customers have, that we serve some of the best fish & chips in the area. Cockney Kings is a family owned and operated restaurant that has been in business since 1965. The original British style eatery was opened by Len Evans in 1965. Cockney Kings has always been proud of serving only the best quality seafood, cooked in a light home-style batter. Dan Turner has many reasons to love Cockney Kings Fish & Chips in North Burnaby. As the owner for the past five years, Turner earns part of his living there. More importantly, it was at that very restaurant where he met his wife Kristi. “I grew up here,” Turner said of the Kensington Plaza restaurant. “I started in 1985 and worked here for 14 years before I left in 1999 when I bought the New Westminster (Cockney Kings) location. Kristi and I were both working here … and now we’ve been married more than nine years and have three girls.” Four years ago, the Burnaby location came up for sale, so it wasn’t a tough decision for Turner to return to his old stomping grounds.

All you have to do is show up at 7:30 a.m. and see him knee deep in fish. “Halibut is pretty expensive right now, so I want to make sure I’m on top of it,” said Turner, who estimates his team prepares about 100 pounds of halibut and cod each day. Cockney Kings a North Burnaby treat | Burnaby Now

KENSINGTON SQUARE ~ 85 Why choose compounds over comercially available products? Imagine if your child needs to take medication, but is disgusted with the taste of the large pill. She spits it onto the floor. You toss the dirty pill into the garbage and try again with another pill. The same instance occurs. Was part of the pill absorbed? What do you do now? What if the pill was flavoured and smaller? Imagine how easy it would be for your kid to swallow kid-sized pills. Medications on the market can be filled with ingredients causing the patient to reject the medication. Our compounding is accessible for your needs, and can modify medications by extracting certain products like gluten sugar, soy, casein and even dyes. in addition we are able to customize dosages, forms, as well as strengths, so that medications can be taken as both prescribing doctor and patient see fit! We don’t call ourselves the Family Dental Centre without good reason! At Kensington Square Dental, we believe that a child should establish a dental home no later than at one year old. Gallery Bistro What happens when you take two longtime residents of Port Moody, add a posse of friends and artists and provide a great space with excellent food and drink? You get the Gallery Bistro in Port Moody’s arts and heritage district, of course. “You know that café everyone dreams of – the one where the door clinks open, you see your friends, the barista knows your name and there is always a new piece of art to check out? That’s the vibe we were after when we took over the Gallery Bistro,” says Helen Daniels who, with husband Rainer Daniels, recently completed renovations and an expansion of this quaint hideaway. “We wanted a funky little cafe

where people can connect with the arts scene in Port Moody. It’s such a vibrant community.” Along with an innovative roster of arts events, including readings, pop-up theatre and gallery shows, the Gallery Bistro serves up tasty gourmet soups, sandwiches and salads, weekend brunch specials and a full array of specialty coffees and treats. “And,” says Daniels, “if we don’t already know your name, we want to know your name! For us, this whole business is about connecting with people.” Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and available for special events bookings. Catering services also available. 2411 Clarke St./604-937-0998/on facebook: GalleryBistroPortMoody Jillian Hull Vivio Flowers As owner and designer of Port Moody’s newest fresh-only floral sensation, I would like to extend an invitation for you to experience Vivio Flower Gallery. THE PORT MOODY ARTS CENTRE The Blackberry Gallery is a free public art gallery, operated by Port Moody Arts Centre Society and located in Port Moody’s original City Hall built in 1913. The Society, registered as a non-profit organization, is funded through the help of the City of Port Moody, the Gaming Commission and by donations received from individuals and corporations. Located on the main floor of the Port Moody Arts Centre, the Blackberry Gallery consists of four exhibition spaces: the Main Gallery, the 3D Gallery, the Plum Gallery - Walls, and the Display Case. The Gallery hosts 44 exhibitions per year, ranging from works by international and regional to local artists. This beautiful heritage building was built in 1913 as the original City Hall of Port Moody. This also marked the incorporation of Port Moody as a city. The City Hall served also as a police station, jail and fire hall. The tall western tower housing the elevator was used to dry the fire hoses and the prisoners were kept in cells in the basement where the pottery kilns are now. Perhaps it is one of these long ago prisoners that we hear walking up and down the main staircase at late night pottery firings! Another topic of speculation and debate - is there or is there not a secret tunnel under St. John’s Street to Jake’s Pub? The Arts Centre is home to galleries, a gift shop, arts classes of all kinds, volunteers and many different community arts groups. As of September 1, 1999 it is run by the non-profit Port Moody Arts Centre Society. www.pomoartscentre.ca

Outdoor Recreation

Port Moody’s gentle tides make kayaking a pleasure and its crescent shape shoreline is always busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The forested mountainside is home to Belcarra Provincial Park with its lovely lake and network of hiking trails, as well as Buntzen Lake Recreation Area, popular for its boating, fishing and many hiking trails. Several trails are suitable for mountain bikes. Wildlife Viewing While the sheltered harbour still has some industry, freighters come and go at a seemingly relaxed pace thus making the waters save havens to sea lions lolling around on log booms, wading blue herons, eagles and geese.

106 ~ Old Town Port Moody

Heritage Tour of Port Moody The Coast Salish nation were the first inhabitants in the area that became Port Moody, likely attracted by the sheltered waterfront and forested hillsides. The Fraser River gold rush of 1858 led Col. R.C. Moody and the Royal Engineers to build a trail from the then capital of New Westminster north to Port Moody as a defense position in the event of an attack by US soldiers. The attack never happened but North Road is still a vital link between the two cities. Twenty years later, Port Moody was chosen as the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The port enjoyed this notoriety for two years, until a new terminus was found at Granville, now Vancouver. This tour will let you explore the beginnings of the railway and indulge in the rich heritage, which abounds in Port Moody. Begin your tour at the Port Moody Station Museum. Built in 1905, it was the second railway station in the area. www.cityofportmoody.com

120 ~ The Evergreen Line

THE EVERGREEN LINE

The Evergreen Line is a 10.9 kilometre (6.8 mi) long SkyTrain rapid transit line being built for the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It will extend the SkyTrain network from Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby to Lafarge Lake–Douglas in Coquitlam, with the addition of six new SkyTrain stations and major upgrades to two existing stations (Commercial–Broadway Station and Lougheed Town Centre). When this extension is open, the Millennium Line will be shortened to operate from Waterfront to Lougheed Town Centre, and the Evergreen Line will operate between VCC–Clark and Lafarge Lake–Douglas. Service is planned to begin by middle of 2016 and is expected to serve 70,000 passengers per day in 2021. Plans for the line call for the use of tunnels and elevated guideways, using the same automated technology as the existing SkyTrain rapid transit lines operated by TransLink elsewhere in Metro Vancouver. On January 25, 2012, the provincial government announced that pre-construction work would proceed on the line, including the removal of some buildings and the construction of underground utility tunnels.

PORT MOODY ~ 121 Burquitlam The Evergreen Line will run north from Lougheed Town Centre Station on an elevated guideway along the centre of North Road. Burquitlam Station will be on the east side of Clarke Road near Burquitlam Plaza. Leaving Burquitlam Station, the line will cross to the west side of Clarke Road, before entering a tunnel towards Port Moody. Port Moody The Evergreen Line will emerge from the tunnel just east of Barnet Highway. It will travel at ground level along the south side of the Canadian Pacific Rail (CPR) tracks to Moody Centre Station (with a connection to the West Coast Express), located at the Port Moody transit exchange site. Continuing east, the line will cross the CPR tracks just before Inlet Centre Station, located north of Barnet Highway. Coquitlam The line will continue along the north side of the CPR tracks towards Coquitlam Central Station, located at the Coquitlam transit exchange site. Turning north, the line will run on an elevated guideway along the west side of Pinetree Way to Lincoln Station. It will then cross to the east side near Northern Avenue, before ending at Lafarge Lake–Douglas Station, north of Guildford Way.

Triple Flip believes in having a fun and active lifestyle, where girls can be real girls. That means our clothes have to play as hard as girls do, and be as much fun to wear as the girls who wear them. They have to feel just as good when you are moving, as when it’s time to relax. Flipwear designs are all created with real girls in mind. We use active girls as sizing models, so that the clothes have a better chance of fitting when they are worn on actual bodies. For the smaller sizes, we don’t simply downsize an adult cut — we design it specifically for a younger body. Flipwear design and production reflects the feedback we get from our customers.

Coquitlam Means “Salmon” The City of Port Coquitlam was incorporated as a municipality in 1913 and City Hall constructed in 1914. Since that time the City has seen significant growth with a population now exceeding 57,000. Port Coquitlam is bounded on the south by the Fraser River, on the east by the Pitt River, west by the Coquitlam River and by the Coast Mountains to the north. Before the arrival of the early white settlers around the 1860’s, the area now known as Port Coquitlam was a First Nations village at the mouth of the Coquitlam River. Coquitlam is an aboriginal word meaning “salmon,” and the Coquitlam River was famous for its hordes of the Pacific Coast fish.

PORT COQUITLAM ~ 133 The Giggle Dam has been enthralling audiences since 2001 with outrageous musical skit comedy. Reminiscent of Second City Review, the immensely talented performers of the Giggle Dam Dinner Theatre offer lively rapid-fire comedy skits, musical parodies, impersonations, etc. The politically incorrect offerings of the “Dam” cast is catching fire quickly. Along with the hilarious politically incorrect nature of their comedy, the unique twist is the casts interaction with the audience; unparalleled in any live theatre setting in the Lower Mainland. Everyone in the audience is met personally. Every name is remembered and those who show a desire to get in on the fun could be “singled out,” or even invited on stage to participate in a skit! It’s the perfect way to embarrass your annoying brother-in-law, or to get back at your boss for those extra projects he’s been piling on your desk! Museum

The Museum is located in the old General Store building on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. The main part of the building dates back to 1885 and was moved from its original location near Herring Road to its present site in 1908. The building housed Pitt Meadows’ first post office (in use to 1944) and one of its earliest stores (in use until 1931). After 1931 the building was used primarily as a residence and received municipal heritage status in 1989. By the mid 1990s the building was vacant and had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was purchased in 1997 by the City of Pitt Meadows, and, after eight months of restoration, the Pitt Meadows Heritage & Museum Society became its new tennew tenant. Artifacts relating to the pioneer and agricultural history of the community are located on the first floor of the Museum with offices, work and storage areas, and a small community archives located on the upper floor. www.pittmeadows.bc.ca

Zena’s Gluten Free Zena is the Goddess of GlutenFree. For real. Her mandate is to consistently produce 100% gluten-free, fresh-baked goods that taste delicious and are high in nutritive value. By Greek definition, Zena is said to mean welcoming, hospitable and friendly one. In Latin and Persian, the meaning of Zena is said to be “Woman”. Serendipitously, Zena’s owners Rebecca and Erin are women and were both given the middle name “Zena” at birth by their respective parents. Actually, they weren’t. But that sure would have been neat.

144 ~ Memorial Peace Park Bandstand

Memorial Peace Park Bandstand The Maple Ridge Concert Band presented the Bandstand as a gift to the people of Maple Ridge on May 7, 1994. George Price offered his considerable talents for fund-raising and on-site construction began in March, 1994 taking a remarkably short 8-1/2 weeks to complete. This included ordering the decorative columns from Oregon, letting the contracts for the structural steel work, renting a large warehouse for the assembly of the acoustically-engineered ceiling (the acoustic design was completed by the same firm that designed the acoustics for the Orpheum Theatre), painting the decorative railings and ironwork, painting the ceiling panels, and countless meetings with the general contractor. In the end, the final costs of the project (including donated materials) amounted to $192,000. This did not include more than 1,300 hours of volunteer time (176 person-days) and the value of the land donated by the Municipality. The Provincial Government donated a grant in the amount of $50,650. Today the Bandstand is used for movie shoots, weddings, musical performances as well as many other special events. The Bandstand was designed by architect/engineer Tom Walker, a resident of Maple Ridge and long time musician/trombone player.

150 ~ Golden Ears Bridge

Golden Ears Bridge The Golden Ears Bridge links Langley and Surrey on the south side of the Fraser river with the north side communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The official launch of construction was June 27, 2006 and the bridge opened in the summer of 2009. The new bridge will provide quicker travel times for motorists and truckers. It will also promote business activity, investment and job creation in the host communities and beyond. The Golden Crossing Constructors Joint Venture recognizes the importance of the Golden Ears Bridge project to people in this region, and so we have adopted design themes that pay tribute to local history and geography. The Golden Ears peaks look down on the bridge from the north. There are several explanations for the origin of the term “Golden Ears.” By one local account, “Golden Ears” is a modification of “Golden Aeries,” referring to the nests of the eagles that thrive on Canada’s Pacific coast. The eagle has been chosen as a symbol for the bridge, and will be displayed on project signs and on the bridge towers. The design theme also recognizes First Nations and their relationship to the land through the inclusion of “fish trap” fences and specially designed lanterns along the roadway. The planting of native trees, shrubs and grasses will build a sense of harmony along the corridor and help to integrate the facility within the region. Located at all pedestrian entrances to the Golden Ears Bridge is a series of interpretative panels.

Our First Capital When Queen Victoria named New Westminster in 1859 after her dearest location in London, this first capital city of BC was dubbed ‘the Royal City.’ Although it was dethroned in 1868, New Westminster retains its imperial title, largely due to its stately Victorian and Edwardian heritage buildings, regal views of the surrounding mountains and majestic hillside location within the Greater Vancouver region. 12TH STREET

Long Been A Community On Its Own 12th Street has long been a community of its own: one that grew along this early road connection kept busy by the major crossroads of 6th and 8th Avenue. A streetcar line once ran up and down the 12th Street hill, providing easy transportaportation into New Westminster, drawing visitors to the Metro Theatre that once served as the focal point of the community. QUEENSBOROUGH

A Visit To Queensborough Landing Queensborough has a colourful past unlike other neighbourhoods in the Royal City. Here people from many different cultures lived and worked together seeking employment at local sawmills, canneries, shipyards and farms. To this day Queensborough, which is set apart from the main city by the North Arm of the Fraser River, continues to have a wonderful multicultural flavour. Today Queensborough Landing is the centre of New Westminster’s island suburb. Filled with restaurants, outlet stores and a newly opened 5-star casino, Queensborough is a shopaholic’s dream. When visiting the Landing, drop in at Mexx, La Senza, Guess, Aldo, Tommy Hilfiger, Le Chateau and Espirit for fashion, Best Buy for electronics, and Home Outfitters and Walmart for your home needs. 174 ~ Quaint Neighbourhoods By The River Quicksilver, Fairweather, Liz Claiborne, Jones New York, Point Zero, Moores, and Payless Shoes. Fuel up with a late lunch or dinner at the newly opened Boston Pizza: try their Stromboli sandwiches, they are amazing. Other local restaurants include Tora Sushi, Taco Del Mar, Starbucks, Tim Horton’s and Opa! Greek restaurant. Take a break from the afternoon of shopping and take a walk along the Fraser River. Enjoy one of BC’s last ‘working rivers’ by watching tugboats zip up and down this busy bit of the mighty Fraser. What you wouldn’t expect in this community are quaint neighbourhoods tucked along the riverside. But that’s what you find if you take a trip off the beaten path. Expect a peaceful New Westminster riverfront row home at Marmalade Sky pre-construction property in a community life amid the hustle and bustle of the lower mainland.

THE BREWERY DISTRICT

PHOTO: Courtesy of www.hankstruckpictures.ca

In 1879 the Sapperton Brewery - BC’s oldest brewery - was established in the Sapperton neighbourhood of New Westminster, BC. Over the course of the Brewery’s lifetime, the business changed owners several times, from Coast Breweries to Lucky Lager and finally to Labatt’s Brewing Company in 1958. Labatt’s continued producing its products and other contract beers until 2005, after the decision was made to close the New Westminster plant in 2004. Conceived to fulfill long-standing community needs, The Brewery District will be a catalyst for social and economic rejuvenation – drawing retailers, businesses, and residents back to the neighbourhood. It will also showcase the most progressive ideas in modern placemaking, combining leading-edge urban design with a deep understanding of human needs to create vital, timeless spaces. The Labatt Brewery had been listed in the New Westminster Heritage Resource Inventory. With the decommissioning of the Brewery, the City of New Westminster Community Heritage Commission idenitified artifacts from the site that have historical significance. The Brewery District will honour that history and legacy, weaving elements from its past into one collective “community memory” for its future.

SAPPERTON ~ 181 New West favourite, Cadeaux (467 East Columbia), boasts more than 900 square feet of clothing, jewelry, cards, gifts of every kind, as well as a sizeable kids’ toy section tucked away in the shop’s back corner. It’s one of the city’s best stops for gifts and ‘home embellishments’ where you’re sure to find something you, or someone you love, can’t live without. We are easily accessible by two local skytrain stations: Sapperton and Braid. No trip to Sapperton is complete without visiting the historic Caps’ Bicycle Shop (434A East Columbia). Many long-time residents of New Westminster can tell you about their first bike purchased from this very store. “Our store is a combination of how we love to ride. I’m a family man so I want to look after the kids and parents. Folding bikes are Marie’s passion and there is no one in Canada that knows more about folding bikes than Marie.” Owners

182 ~ Sapperton Landing Park

Sapperton Landing Park This park, located at the foot of Cumberland Street, is a pretty place to walk along the Fraser River and to wave at the frequent trains that go by. It also has a bit of dark history - the fishing pier and old house near the entrance were formerly where prisoners were brought in via the river to the old BC Pen across Columbia Street. But even if you know that, it’s still a peaceful park to visit. Even on a sunny day, very few venture across the railway tracks to visit, so every time I come here, I’ve got the place practically to myself. The path is nicely landscaped and has a number of wooden bridges that make good stopping points to enjoy the view of the Fraser River in all it’s working glory - tugboats, seabirds, log booms - with the mighty Golden Ears and Mt. Baker in the distance. The only real problem is that, as of yet, the path abruptly ends at Front Street. Narrow and travelled heavily by freight trucks, it’s not safe to walk further along the road. So, you must either turn back along the path, or walk along the paved trail that runs alongside the railroad tracks back to the beginning. This can be fun if there’s a train going through, especially one of the Rocky Mountaineer trains, full of people who like to wave hello to me and my cute dog. http://www.yelp.ca/biz/sapperton-landing-park-new-westminster

196 ~ Macdonald Realty Not all real estate companies are the same. At Macdonald Realty, we are always striving to set a higher standard for real estate practices. Better service, better systems—better everything. We are doing it one REALTOR® at a time—with careful hiring, intensive training, and seasoned management support in all offices. Macdonald Realty is bringing agents over to our way of doing business: helping people go through one of the biggest and most expensive transitions in their lives more smoothly, and with more information, with less stress, and more ease. These are not just words in a mission statement hung on a wall somewhere. This is what we actually do—over and over again. That’s why, once you’ve worked with a Macdonald Realty agent, the next time you go through one of those big life transitions, you won’t want to do it without us. Our clients keep calling us back. They send their friends, and then, twenty years later, they send their grown up kids to us. That’s who we strive to be: the agents you’ll send your kids to, the agents you are excited to tell your friends to call, the agents you can rely on.
