Welcome to the Neighborhoods of Vancouver DOWNTOWN edition. This guide emphasizes and points out the different neighborhoods of Downtown Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and offers a special welcome to new Vancouverites as well. How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighborhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed.” Well, let me tell you things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighborhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history. We will let you know who is new in each neighborhood and also let you know if your old favorites are still around. We will tell you where interesting neighborhoods have sprung up that you may not know about. Do you know these neighborhoods Emery Barnes Park, Crosstown and Railtown? We call them ‘Boutique Neighborhoods.’ There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard. Having been born and raised in Vancouver and a heritage writer, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day. This guide is meant to be kept for a year and to be taken with you as you visit a different neighborhood each week or weekend as time allows. If you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too! So get out and explore your neighborhoods. Christopher Best

CHINATOWN

Third Largest Chinatown in North America This is North America’s third largest Chinatown. Mandarin and Cantonese the mother tongues in 30 per cent of Vancouver homes, makes Chinese the largest “minority” ethnic group. There are lots of interesting markets with many varieties of fresh and dried seafood and mushrooms. You’ll also find inexpensive houseware and traditional Chinese medicine. During the summer, on weekend evenings, Keefer and Pender Streets become a busy open-air night market. If you have time for a leisurely meal, try dim sum at one of the many small restaurants. It is an inexpensive, multi-course culinary adventure. Besides the businesses on Pender Street, try East Georgia for some interesting newcomers and oldsters.

2 ~ Millenium Gate Vancouver Chinatown Millenium Gate To inaugurate the new millennium and commemorate this “journey in time,” the Vancouver Chinatown Millennium Society designed a physical structure representing both the past and the future. The Millennium Gate, located on Pender and Taylor streets, incorporates both eastern and western symbols with traditional and modern Chinese themes in its construction and appearance. The gate, opened in July 2002, is a project with a mandate to strengthen Chinatown’s image and joint community involvement. Historical Alley Historical Alley is one of the best places to visit for more information on the historical aspect of Vancouver’s Chinatown. You will be able to follow along the timeline from the immigration to the building of the Alleys and markets throughout the streets. These are the alleys that the immigrants moved too, and built their lives on. Find out more when you visit Historical Alley where the museums and small gift shops are. They are located on Shanghai Alley: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden Opened in 1986 for Expo, the garden was built by a team of 52 experts from the city of Suzhou, and represents the first full scale Classical Chinese garden to be built outside of China.

Inside, pin-ups in the bathroom and whitewashed knives on the dining room wall wink to the storied past. But look more closely: Bao Bei is all 2010 – it’s taken this long to get such a fun take on Chinese dining. In the kitchen, chef Joel Watanabe (of Bin 942 and Araxi) homespins ingredients from close by with flavours from far away, irreverently and intelligently reminding us that comfort food doesn’t have to be white-bread. Project Limelight Welcome to the world of Project Limelight, a free theatre program for kids who are driven to perform. No experience necessary! Project Limelight is about inspiring children to look inside themselves and discover their inner strengths, explore their hidden talents, develop confidence and form lasting friendships. Above all, Project Limelight is about having fun! Motivated to give back, sisters Maureen Webb and Donalda Weaver founded Project Limelight to support the East Vancouver community where they were raised. Maureen launched her career in the film industry over 25 years ago in a small office in the Downtown Eastside. As a Casting Director, Maureen has worked with some of the top actors and professionals in the industry, many of whom are lending their support to Project Limelight. In 2002, Maureen co-founded a children’s theatre program on Vancouver Island, offering young people the opportunity to workshop, rehearse, and perform full length productions at professional theatres. It was this experience that gave her a glimpse of the world she wanted to create and the seed for Project Limelight was planted. Donalda also found her way into the film world, owning and managing Sec-

OUR PROGRAM At Project Limelight, we want to unleash the imagination, awaken curiosity and give children the opportunity to experience the magic of applause. We have set out to develop a program that offers youth living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside a safe place to build an artistic community. Project Limelight is open to young people aged 8 to 15 in the Strathcona district. Each session is four months long and runs 3 days a week. The first month is spent learning skills, techniques and forms of expression, including clowning, creative writing, voice work, movement and improvisation. The following three months are spent rehearsing a full-length theatrical production, leading up to a final performance on a community stage, giving participants the opportunity to showcase everything they have accomplished. It ran between Union and Prior Streets from approximately Main Street to Jackson Avenue. While Hogan’s Alley and the surrounding area was an ethnically diverse neighbourhood during this era, home to many Italian, Chinese and Japanese Canadians, a number of black families, black businesses, and the city’s only black church, the African Methodist Episcopal Fountain Chapel, were (continued on next page)

20 ~ Hogan’s Alley, Strathcona located there. As such, Hogan’s Alley was the first and last neighbourhood in Vancouver with a substantial concentrated black population. A possible reason these families settled there was because of the close proximity to the train stations since sleeping car porters were predominantly black men. A 1957 study by the City of Vancouver Planning Department described the black population of Strathcona as such: “The Negro population, while numerically small, is probably a large proportion of the total Negro population in Vancouver. Their choice of this area is partly its proximity to the railroads where many of them are employed, partly its cheapness and partly the fact that it is traditionally the home of many non-white groups.” Prior to 1935, Hogan’s Alley was a red light district, owing to Mayor L. D. Taylor’s “open town policy,” which was that police resources would be concentrated on major crimes, not victimless vice crimes. As a result of this policy, illegal drinking establishments, brothels, and gambling dens operated here, as they did in various other non-white sections of town like Chinatown and Japantown, but also in non-ethnically defined areas nearby such as Gastown, East Hastings and lower Mount Pleasant. This policy also earned Taylor a reputation for being soft on vice crime and he faced accusations of corruption. This was the basis of his electoral defeats in 1929 and 1934. Hogan’s Alley long outlived Taylor’s career in civic politics until it faced demolition to make way for a freeway. Below: Hogan’s Alley, (City of Vancouver Archives, Bu P508.53, photographer A.L. RAILTOWN

Once Headquarters Of American Can Company Before American Can in 1910, it was home to a series of brothels run by Madame Dolly Darlington. Today it is home to a group of businesses intent on making it a design destination. The past can still be seen in the wood cobblestones that pop up on the streets in places, but with businesses like Vancouver Urban Winery and the newly opened Railtown Cafe mixed in amongst the likes of Inform Interiors, Colin Campbell Rugs, Layers & Layers and Crown Wallpaper & Fabrics, Railtown is well on its way to establishing itself as that other destination just east of Gastown. Railway and Alexander are its two principal streets sandwiched in between the docks and Hastings Street and Gastown and the Alexander Centre.

8*/&3: 50634 5"45*/( #"3 8*/& 4)01 Vancouver Urban Winery is located two blocks off Gastown in the historic heart of Vancouver’s Railtown. The 7,700 square foot urban winery is the first of its kind in Vancouver and also operates as a unique special events space. The winery features 36 wine taps at the tasting bar where consumers can learn about British Columbia wines, and the exploding wine-on-tap category. The wine tasting bar at Vancouver Urban Winery is unlike any tasting experience in BC and all of Canada. At the tasting bar, you can taste wines from the different wine appellations across BC. With 36 rotating wines-on-tap, each experience at the tasting bar is unique. You are able to choose from the five tasting menu options or customize your very own tasting. You can also try our local food selection perfectly paired to each wine. The Vancouver Urban Winery tasting bar focuses on promoting local artisan foods with locally made jams, jellies, salts, antipastos, cheese, meats, banana breads, chocolate and much more. Alongside the tasting bar sits a boutique wine shop full of local items, wine merchandise, artisan foods, beverages‌ and plenty of wine! The urban winery concept brings the consumer closer to the winemaking experience in a more meaningful way than a simple wine bar or retail space might. Wine aficionados traditionally travel to remote areas to learn about winemaking firsthand and to taste the offerings of a wine producer in the setting in which they were made. Now, many urban dwellers can hop in their car for a short drive, take public transport or even walk to enjoy an authentic winery experience.

28 ~ Payless Meats Payless Meats has been a part of the Powell street neighborhood since 1954. It is, as far as we know, the oldest butcher shop in the Greater Vancouver area with only three management changes to date. With 3500 square feet of space and a large selection of meats at low prices, the store has been an accommodating and integral part of the block for over half a century. As old as Payless Meats is, it now seems to be in itself, a little part of history. Many patrons have been coming to the shop for a number of years, some for even more than twenty. Some customers come everyday, some every once in a while. Recently, an old U.S. Navy officer stopped by the neighborhood and was pleasantly surprised to find that the store still existed. He recalled visiting the very same store back in 1965, when he was 19 years old, and his navy ship anchored iatthe waterfront docks inVancouver. The products sold in Payless Meats are not necessarily the most expensive cuts of meat. However, the modest prices cater to the people of this neighborhood better than any large commercial supermarket. Customers always comment on how they enjoy coming to this store and walking out of it feeling like they have gotten a good deal. Payless Meats has a decade old specialty meats package that will stock your freezer up for a week or a month, (continued on page 30)

Japantown, Little Yokohama or Little Tokyo

Japantown, Little Yokohama, or Little Tokyo is an old neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada, British Columbia, north of Chinatown, that once had a concentration of Japanese immigrants. During World War II when Japanese Canadians had their property confiscated and were interned (see Japanese Canadian internment), Japantown ceased to be a distinct Japanese ethnic area. Although some Japanese returned after the war, the community never revived. The area is now part of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Along Powell Street, a few remnants of the former Japanese neighbourhood still exist. The Vancouver Buddhist Church, formerly the Japanese Methodist Church, still exists at 220 Jackson Street (at Powell), as does the Vancouver Japanese Language School and Japanese Hall at 475 and 487 Alexander Street (at Jackson), which was established in 1906. Until the boom in Japanese restaurants in the 1980s, two restaurants on Powell Street were among the only Japanese dining in the city. Oppenheimer Park in this area is the site for the annual two day Powell Street Festival which began in 1977. It is held every August, in the first weekend of the month, and is a community celebration of Japanese heritage as well as the alternative and street culture of the Downtown Eastside.

30 ~ Fat Dragon BBQ Payless Meats continued: little snacks to get on the fly or while you are waiting for the bus outside, and sometimes wild meats during game season. Payless Meats is a discreet icon of the Powell street community. It’s presence on the block may be inconspicuous but it’s modesty and continuance makes it a part of the regular everyday stop for people of this community. A walk along Powell Street, east of Main Street, will bring you to a Bean Around The World coffee shop where you know the coffee is always good. A little further east on the other side of the street is Fat Dragon BBQ, where the locals go!

GASTOWN

The Original City Site Established the same year that Canada became a nation, Gastown grew into Canada’s third largest city and one of its most cosmopolitan. But the Gastown district today retains its historic charm, independent spirit and distinctiveness. There is no mistaking Gastown for any other area of Vancouver, or of Canada for that matter. 1920’s: Gastown grew and prospered, as did the rest of the City of Vancouver. But good times couldn’t last forever. Depression Years: Gastown fell on hard times and deteriorated into a stereotypical skid road area until the 1960s. Today, Gastown is back with new fashion, dining and galleries.

And good food. We are describing it as “French cafe meets prairie kitchen.” What on earth does that mean? Well, much of the menu and decor is inspired by being in a European bistro cafe. But our soul and roots are from the prairies. This influences not just some of the cuisine but the heart of what Lily Mae’s is about. Woodward’s Heritage Building phases to a final size of 12 storeys. It occupied approximately 2/3 of of the city block. The popularity of Woodward’s attracted many other businesses to the area. In 1944 the landmark “W” was installed on the top of the building on a 25 metre replica of the Eiffel Tower, replacing a pre-war searchlight-beacon which had until then been the building’s hallmark. The beacon, which was visible at night from as far away as Abbotsford and Mission, was shut down at the beginning of World War II because of its potential use as a landmark for aerial attacks. The building was built in 1903 by Charles Woodward as the second location for the Woodward’s department store. Woodward’s pioneered the concept of one-stop shopping; the store included a food floor which was at the time North America’s largest supermarket, household items, men’s and women’s fashion, and provided cheque cashing, travel booking and other services. The store was well-known for carrying a large variety of goods that were not available anywhere else. The store soon became a feature attraction in Vancouver, and it expanded over 12 separate

52 ~ Bitter Tasting Room At Bitter, we want you to join us on a journey to a time when Vancouver had a bustling beer culture. Before Prohibition shut down the taps, the local breweries were countless. Delicious ales, lagers and bitters poured free. A golden era in history, before the rise of the beer monopoly, when brewers made the beer they wanted to make, not the beer they had to make. We pay respect to our drink of choice by offering you eight rotating taps coming to us from the best BC craft brewers, with occasional imported offerings. Our selection is balanced with a large collection of bottled options from all over the world. Pair your favourite beer with one of our takes on quintessential bar fare. From scotch eggs to pretzels to nibble on or sausage and house sauerkraut for a full meal, we’ve got that grumble in your brew filled belly covered. Acme Cafe, Keep your fork there’s pie! Proprietors: Peggy & Alan Hoffman. Follow us on Twitter for specials and pie updates! Open every day of the year, except Dec. 24-26! New pay parking lot on the corner of Abbott & Hastings. Great items to choose at this new diner are their daily quiche and crock pot specials and the soups are also really delicious. Their curried cauliflower soup really stands out. The beef panini is also good.

Wildebeest invites you to experience unabashedly adventurous, yet simple cooking at its finest set against the history of the Vancouver neighbourhood of Gastown. Explore whole-animal cookery paired with a diverse selection of Old and New World wines and a carefully crafted cocktail list. Set in a refurbished 19th century building, the multi-level space offers a front house cocktail bar & lounge, open-concept kitchen complete with large kitchen tables, an inviting dining room with banquette seating, and an intimately-set underground wine bar.

urban baking & catering

A day at Brioche begins with the clatter of baking pans and the aroma of fresh baked goods and ‘bloody good coffee’. This tantalizing scent lures in an eclectic mix of clientele from the surrounding studios and businesses. Architects, artists, models, filmmakers and other professionals trickle through the stone archway eager to start their day with the best pastries in Vancouver - made fresh daily in house! Many leave with fresh loaves of bread for home or bakery baskets for friends, colleagues or clients.

At lunchtime the heavens open up and spill forth an assortment of casual gourmet favorites including Sicilian panini on housebaked bread, authentic Italian pizza, eggplant parmigiana and seafood salad. Aside from the favorites, each day a variety of mouth-watering entrees, soups and salads are born in the busy Brioche kitchen.

GASTOWN ~ 57 Jade the Stone of Heaven Revered by cultures throughout the world for 1000’s of years... Canada’s largest selection of jade direct from our mine in northern BC. In the early eighties Kirk Makepeace began buying the provinces best mines, bringing integrity and stability to the jade business. In 1995 the Polar Jade mine began to produce a nephrite jade that experts have said is some of the best nephrite jade ever found. Harder and greener than other nephrite jade deposits Polar Jade is asked for by name by buyers around the world. The bright apple green or vibrant emerald colored jade is highly sought after by Chinese and New Zealand carvers. Because of the incredible remoteness of the Jade mines in northern B.C., the jade must be of top quality in order to cover the expense of transporting the jade back down to the jade yard in Vancouver. Buyers come from all over the world in the fall to pick out the jade they need. Now you can visit their retail store in Gastown and pick out the jade that you need!

Start at Gassy Jack Square and check out the unique architecture of the Hotel Europa. There is also a statue of Gassy Jack Deighton after whom Gastown was named in the 1900s. Check out any of the several first nations art galleries. There is the Spirit Wrestler, The Inuit Gallery, Hills Native Art and Coastal Peoples Fine Art Gallery. Eating is a favorite pass time in Gastown. Try the Old Spaghetti Factory, the Water Street Cafe, Brioche and Al Porto Ristoronte Italiano. Take a walk past the Square towards Main Street and see several new boutiques. The Gastown Steam Clock is a major attraction for tourists. On the hour and on the half hour it goes off with whistles all propelled by steam. The only one of its kind apparently! Other boutiques located around Gastown offering urban fashion street wear and the like are Ishara, Lynn Stevens, Mandula, Gentille Alouette and Oak & Fort. Old Faithful Shop stocks quality goods for simple, everyday living. We are drawn to products that are well-made, classic in design and when possible hand-crafted by a human being. Items that age well and stand the test of time.

If you are looking for souvenirs of Vancouver then Gastown is the place to look. Try Suraj Fashions, Hudson House Trading Company, Vishal or Steamclock T Shirts.

HASTINGS STREET

Heritage District on Hastings The Heritage District on Hastings Street stretches from Cambie Street along Hastings up to Burrard Street. It is home to many fine old stone buildings that have been preserved by various institutions and by government and remain a lasting testimony to the glory days of Vancouver. In the 1920s and 30s the area was known as the financial district. There were so many banks located in this three or four block strip that now a day’s many of the businesses and schools located here are in former bank buildings. Even just a block off Hastings Street, either north or south, you will encounter heritage buildings such as the former CPR Station one block north at the foot of Seymour Street. It is now known simply as the Station.

64 ~ Simon Fraser University It is a beautifully preserved building with towering colonnades out front. The Marine Building is also one of the more spectacular Heritage buildings in the district. Its Art Deco styling’s from the 1920s have all been preserved. At Granville and Hastings, a visit inside the Royal Bank will reward you with a spectacular view. Just look up! SFU Vancouver Creation of the downtown campus was a 10-year project. The university had pioneered university mid-career professional education in Vancouver in the early 1980s with the launch of a store-front centre. It was rapidly outgrown and larger premises were leased. Dr. Warren Gill, SFU’s vice-president, university relations and an urban geographer who has played a key role in the development of SFU’s downtown presence, says “It was clear there was need for a down town university centre, but Simon Fraser knew it had to establish the facility through private sector support.” This was achieved and the re-built and revitalized 1927 Spencer building officially opened as SFU’s Vancouver campus on May 5, 1989.

THE HERITAGE DISTRICT ON HASTINGS STREET HONOUR THE PAST, EMBRACE THE FUTURE In a modern-day evolution, the historic commerce and banking area of Vancouver’s West Hastings Street has become a centre for the most prestigious of Western Canadian retailing, including world-renowned brands. The concentration is now such that an opportunity exists for area development, marketing and promotion. While most of the existing retailers in the area are “destinations” for a select clientele, the consensus among them is that much can be gained through a strategic partnership.

On Hastings Street next to and ajoining the SFU Centre of Dialogue is located the Delta Suites Hotel. While this is a newly designed building, it fits in well with its surroundings. Near the corner of Howe and Hastings is Dorian Rae Tribal Art. A little further up Howe and you will discover Cartier. Back down at Hastings on the other side of the street is the first Starbucks LEED store. On the North side of Hastings at Seymour is an old Heritage building that used to be the famous T. Eaton’s Co. department store. It now houses the downtown campus of Simon Fraser U. A wonderful heritage building is located across the street at the next corner. It used to be a bank building. It is now the Wosk Centre for Dialogue, a part of Simon Fraser University. Across from the Wosk Centre is the Sears Tower Mall. SFU has the first half of the block and the mall the second. Visit the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower and the shops.

VANCOUVER CONVENTION CENTRE In 2003, some $100 million in delegate spending was lost because Vancouver did not have enough meeting space to accommodate groups wishing to hold conventions in the city. The expansion of the convention centre followed a review by the Convention Centre Task Force, made up of members of the business community. The expansion increases the number of delegate days each year from the current 150,000 to nearly 370,000 within the first five years after opening. On average, a delegate will spend about $350 per day during their visit to Vancouver, with about one-third of convention delegates traveling to other parts of the province as part of their stay. Built over land and water on some 1,000 piles, the expansion has just been completed this spring 2009. In 2010, the VCEC will be home of the 2010 Olympic Games media and broadcast centre centres. In order to ensure that the expansion and existing facility are fully integrated, a glass-walled connector will link the facilities, providing delegates with exceptional harbor views as well as a seamless transition. Featuring floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the expansion, the project will also include a six-acre living roof, one of the largest of its kind in the world. This unique ecosystem is one of many environmental innovations included in the expansion. It’s easy to think green at the Vancouver Convention Centre. With more than 350 events per year, we maintain an extensive environmental program and work closely with clients to ensure sustainability in all events.

76 ~ Vancouver Convention Centre Recycling: We recycle an average of 180,000 kilograms of materials annually – nearly half of the total volume of waste generated. Food & Beverage: Our ‘scratch’ kitchen uses fresh local ingredients without additives, avoids disposable utensils and dishes, and donates leftover food to local charities. Green Design: •Our six-acre “living roof” houses thousands of indigenous plants and recovers rainwater for irrigation. •Seawater heating and cooling and on-site water treatment. •Fish habitat built into the building foundations. Energy Conservation: •Designated a Powersmart Convention Centre by BC Hydro. •Awarded “GO GREEN” certificate from the Building Owners and Managers. •West Building expansion built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification standards

BURRARD LANDING ~ 77

BURRARD LANDING At the foot of Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver a new neighborhood is taking place. It is called Burrard Landing. On a sunny day you will find convention centre delegates eating their lunches on the many benches that dot the eastside of Vancouver’s new downtown waterfront convention centre. Eateries and other businesses are gradually filling in the vacant spots underneath the convention centre, affording both Vancouverites and tourists a spectacular vista to stroll along and enjoy Vancouver scenery at its finest. The latest edition and by far what I think will be become the most successful to date is Mahony & Sons Public House, situated right on the corner edge of the convention centre walk around. Sit on the large expansive patio or listen to the Irish music inside, it doesn’t matter, you will love the place. www.mahonyandsons.com Other businesses on the landing include Delane Canada Gift Shop, Bellagio Cafe and a Subway.

78 ~ Woodwards Heritage Building (continued from page 49, Woodwards Heritage Building)

Woodward’s fortunes declined as customers gravitated to more suburban malls. In 1993, Woodward’s went bankrupt and closed its doors. In fall 2002 a small group of community activists occupied the empty building for one week in a campaign to secure social housing from the Provincial government. After the police eviction a tent city was erected on the sidewalks around the building for another three months. The series of events is known as the Woodward’s Squat, or “Woodsquat,” which has been acknowledged for “setting in motion the eventual redevelopment of the landmark department store building.” In 2003 the City of Vancouver led by Jim Green purchased the building from the province for $5 million, and began a public consultation process, asking the community what they wanted from the redevelopment. The 400 million dollar project (almost one million square feet in size) includes 536 market housing units, 125 singles non-market housing units to be operated by PHS Community Services, 75 family non-market housing units to be operated by Affordable Housing Society, Nesters Food Store and London Drugs, TD Canada Trust, The National Film Board of Canada and civic offices, a daycare, public atrium and plaza, and a new addition to the Simon Fraser University downtown campus: the 130,000 sf School for Contemporary Arts. The “W” neon sign, which topped the building on the Eiffel Tower replica, was removed before the demolition and was replicated and re-installed on January 9, 2010.

VANCOUVER HARBOUR FLIGHT CENTRE .. is the new downtown seaplane terminal available to multiple seaplane operators offering scheduled and chartered flights to many B.C. locations. The state of the art terminal offers for the travelling public complete efficiency and professional service. Located in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre, the permanent seaplane facility replaces the existing temporary seaplane facilities that are slated to be de-commissioned later this year. The seaplane terminal facilities occupy approximately 1,000 square metres of the Vancouver Convention Centre (3500 level) and include ticketing counters, and contemporary staff office space. Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre seaplane development is equipped to provide full services to seaplane operators. The docks feature a concrete designed level surface with no pilings, anchored using the SEAFLEX mooring system. “Vancouver’s new seaplane facilities create an atmosphere of comfort and service to further enhance the experience of Vancouver’s bustling seaplane industry,” said

80 ~ Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre Graham Clarke, Chairman of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. “Increased traffic and passenger preferences support new flight destinations, enabling better access to BC’s coastal regions. This helps stimulate business and tourism sectors throughout the province.” “The central location of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre gives a boost to retail and services located near the eastern seawall,” said Scott Lyons, President of Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre. Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre, a partnership between the Clarke Group of Companies and The Ledcor the Group of Companies, is defining the future of seaplane travel by designing terminal facilities that bring a new level of convenience and efficiency to seaplane operators and passengers travelling to the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, Nanaimo and other coastal destinations. The seaplane docks are engineered for longevity and to uphold the standards set by the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion Project.

110 ~ Booster Juice Kadoya is a cafe sized establishment at the heart of Davie street. As soon as you walk in your senses are graced with a tantalizing smell of tempura to walk through the crowd is to watch people marveling at a generous sized piece of art like watching people in a museum watching the Mona Lisa. After a wait during rush hours (lunch and dinner) your seated by a smiling friendly waitress (unlike alot of places the service is always friendly) andasked if youd like to start with tea or water. The green tea is great and doesn’t have that gritty after taste some teas get. On the walls are mountains of customer reviews about the amazingly colorful rolls. The sashimi is unbelievable and mouth watering.

Booster Juice offers smoothies and juices as a healthy alternative to typical fast food from franchised stores in several countries. Dale Wishewan, Booster Juice President & CEO says: “Our mission statement says we will provide our customers with an incredible, healthy alternative to fast food that’s great tasting, convenient and nutritious, making it perfectly suited for today’s active lifestyle.” We’re a Global franchise based from Canada, we specialize in building our brand with health-conscious restaurants that sell our delicious smoothies and other food offerings.

Zeitoon is a Persian restaurant located in the heart of North Vancouver’s Persian community and now in Vancouver’s westend neighborhood near English Bay. Observing the trend toward low-price, low-quality Persian food venues in the city, we decided it was time to open a respectable restaurant which would serve as a breath of fresh air for customers seeking quality Persian food. Knowing that there is increasing awareness about the quality of ingredients people put into their bodies, Zeitoon has arranged to serve our customers with food that lives up to their standards. Hailing from Iran, our management has ensured that the food will proudly represent our culture to anyone who walks through our doors, Persian or otherwise. Come visit us around the corner at Denman and Pendrell.

At Dermix we believe in the five Rs of aesthetic medicine. Resurfacing with lasers and medical grade peels, Relaxing with Botox, Refilling with dermal fillers, Restoring skin with topical cosmeceuticals and Redraping with surgical options. The first four R’s, the ones which do not involve invasive surgical procedures, are the focus of the aesthetic physician. The fifth R, Redraping, is the work of the plastic surgeon. A baguette is “a long thin loaf of French bread” that is commonly made from basic lean dough (the dough, though not the shape, is defined by French law). It is distinguishable by its length and crisp crust. Also known as a submarine sandwich, hero sandwich, Italian Sandwich, sub, hoagie, torpedo or grinder are all amongst many regional naming variations,

Transylvania Traditions Bakery Narcisa’s love for good food has turned the Transylvanian Traditions Bakery sweet-shop into one of Vancouver’s premier dessert spots. On her arrival in Canada in 2007, Narcisa Stoian noticed the lack of traditional romanian sweets, which have always been a part of her childhood and her parents’ careers, and decided that Vancouver was the perfect place for her to share her love of romanian cuisine. Since the bakery opened in February 2008, it has been featured in the Vancouver Sun, Canadian Immigrants as well as many local dinner tables. Along with over a dozen preservative-free romanian cakes, Transylvanian Traditions is one of the only places in Canada to make Kurtos Colacs, a delicious, baked sweet dough spiral, dipped in caramel and walnuts.

Judges Indian Cuisine invites you into a world of exotic flavors and time honored traditions in cooking and dining. Experience Indian Cuisine at its finest. Fragrant, pungent and warm spices from the four corners of the country are delicately blended in meticulous proportions to create the dishes we present to you. Each dish will have its own distinctive flavor and aroma which cannot come from any curry powder from spices which have to be separately prepared each day fresh for each individual dish. The blending and preparation of spices is a centuries-old craft and indispensable to Indian cuisine.

Davie Street runs from False Creek in the south through several neighborhoods. The first neighborhood is Yaletown. The next is the Emery Barnes Park neighborhood. Once past Granville Street and Burrard Street is Davie Village. Down the hill, Davie Street ends at Denman and you are then in the neighborhood of English Bay, also called the West End.

The Elbow Room was started in 1983 by Patrick Savoie, an ex-teacher and Brian Searle, an insurance adjuster. It’s original location, at 720 Jervis Street, was located in the first mayor of Vancouver’s house, and was declared a heritage building. At first Bryan did dishes and Patrick cooked. We had one employee, Vera McKee, who waited tables. After a while we hired a cook and Patrick went out on the floor. The Palisades Hotel was located one block away, and at the time, catered to the movie business and the stars, which were now beginning to thrive in Vancouver’s new movie industry. As a result of our location we had many movie stars come to our little restaurant, the first was Tom Selleck. We now have 52 seats, a staff of 10-12 and abusing customers from all over Canada, the US and the world. We are listed with the Japanese Tourist Board, the Actors Guild and dozens of other entertainment organizations in Hollywood. We still get our fair share of stars from TV, movies and stage. If you take a look, you’ll see their pictures on our walls.

ROBSON STREET

Rodeo Drive North Robsonstrasse was originally the German shopping district of Vancouver. In the sixties there were delicatessens, bakeries and restaurants as well as a European News store. Today, it is the city’s most fashionable shopping street. Alfred Sung, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel, Rodier Paris and Stephane de Raucourt are just some of the big names on this urban shopping destination. Options for grabbing a bite abound. You can find everything from Schnitzel to Sushi along this bustling thoroughfare. It is also cruising central in the summertime, with cars and sidewalks filled with people enjoying the warm summer air. Rodeo Drive North is another name for Robson Street of today. Besides fashion Robson is home to hotels, specialty shops and a Whole Foods Market further down by Denman Street.

Items are mostly smalls under the $200 range. Drop by and check them out. Everyone is very friendly!

Robson Street Its name honours John Robson, a major figure in British Columbia’s entry into the Canadian Confederation, and Premier of the province from 1889 to 1892. n 1895, train tracks were laid down the street, supporting a concentration of shops and restaurants. From the early to middle-late 20th century, and especially after significant immigration from postwar Germany, the northwest end of Robson Street was known as a centre of German culture and commerce in Vancouver, earning the nickname Robsonstrasse, even among non-Germans (this name lives on in the Robsonstrasse Hotel on the street).

146 ~ Villeroy & Boch Rendezvous Art Gallery You are invited to come in and browse through our vibrant gallery in the heart of Vancouver’s downtown shopping, financial, and tourist district. We represent an exquisite collection of quality, collectable, original Canadian fine art. If you are looking for works by a particular artist, we encourage you to contact our staff, as we maintain a large selection of works that are not always on display. Jessica Hedrick understands art both as a subject of love and of necessity. From the day that she was born, the art of her father, Ron Hedrick, has provided both joy and sustenance for Jessica and her family. As a result, throughout her childhood, teens, and twenties, Jessica has been constantly emersed in the creation of and business of fine art. It should be no surprise, then, that Jessica is emerging as one of the youngest successful gallerists in British Columbia. Clients and collectors of all types have found Jessica’s warm and intelligent approach to art to be positively refreshing. Jessica will help you to find the piece of fine art that you find most desirable. Sinclair Centre is an upscale shopping mall located in Downtown Vancouver at 757 West Hastings Street between Granville and Howe. The centre is comprised of four buildings that were restored by Henriquez Partners Architects and joined together by a glass atrium roof in 1986, at a cost of $38 million.

Dorian Rae established her gallery in Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1978. Previous to that she lived, traveled extensively, and collected tribal art and textiles in South East Asia. Each piece in her gallery is selected by her based on its authenticity and artistic value. The Dorian Rae Collection includes ancient artifacts, oriental antiques, and authentic tribal art from West Africa and South East Asia. In addition to Asian and African tribal, ethnic, and archaic jewelry, Dorian has an extensive collection of old jewelry from the American Southwest. Dorian has sold artifacts to museums and collectors all over the world.

GRANVILLE STREET

Our Entertainment District Granville Street downtown use to be known as Theatre Row in the sixties. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than on any other street in Vancouver. That has changed over the years. Today Granville Street is being revitalized with new businesses coming in from the Granville Bridge up to Georgia Street. Big Box stores are common such as, Winners and Future Shop and the historical Hudson’s Bay Co. Department Store is still located on the corner of Georgia and Granville. A new Nordstom is due in three years. There is an entertainment factor offering good local pubs such as The Lennox Pub and Hennessey’s Irish House. There are also several night clubs located here for the 20 something crowd.

152 ~ Ingledew’s Shoes The first Ingledew’s Shoe store was opened in 1915 by William Wright Ingledew. 90 years and 4 generations later, Ingledew’s is still family owned and operated and has grown from one small store on Granville Street to twelve locations throughout the lower mainland and Victoria. At the time Ingledew’s first opened, choices in footwear styles were limited and predominantly classic dress shoes. However, Mr. Ingledew quickly observed that his customers enjoyed having a selection of shoes in one store. He revolutionized the shoe store concept by offering customers an unparalleled assortment of styles,

GRANVILLE STREET ~ 153

sizes and widths. People loved it: Ingledew’s became THE place to shop. From the beginning, we have tried to listen to what our customers value and have made every effort to satisfy their needs. As they’ve changed, so have we. When many of our customers moved to the suburbs, we followed and opened stores closer to their neighbourhoods. As advances in shoe manufacturing technology occured, we have been quick to expand our product offerings to introduce important new product features to our customers. When a demand for casual shoes became evident, we quickly integrated the top comfort brands into our merchandise mix. At Ingledew’s our goal is to help every customer find shoes that are the right fit, whether that be long-term comfort or short-term glamour. We also believe that you don’t have to necessarily sacrifice comfort for style - or style for comfort, although we’re the first to admit that not all shoes were made for walking. If you ask Vancouverites what we sell in our stores, chances are they’ll say dress shoes. We carry many famous dress shoe brands such as Amalfi, Stuart Weitzman, Roberto Capucci, Allen Edmonds, Florsheim, Mezlan, Magnanni and many others as well as our extensive and exclusive private label collections from Italy and Spain.

156 ~ The Edge Social Grille & Lounge THE REFINERY As you’re staring down towards the Granville Street Bridge, the sun sets high in the sky to the West, reflecting a warm pink and vanilla glow over the Granville Entertainment District... it’s almost time for the lights to dim, the music starts bouncing, and the nightlife begins to emerge. This is the Granville Street routine, and it’s been like this for years, but we’ve added another element. The Refinery’s partial graffitti sign on the second floor lures curious diners and experienced cocktailers to something seldom seen on Granville Street. We welcome all of you to our home. Stackhouse Burger Bar “A Cut Above – Stylish new burger restaurant opens its doors intent on revitalizing the dining scene in the Granville Entertainment District.” The menu, conceptualized and executed daily by Chef Shahab Ghaemi (formerly of Crime Lab, Century House and Lucy Mae Brown), is a testament of his true dedication to the quest for the “Perfect Burger”. With ten on offer, as well as one foot-long “Euro-Dog” and three slider options, there is surely something on his menu for everyone. Surprisingly unique salad options, truffled poutine with bocconcini and perfectly crisp onion rings with one of the house-made aiolis (Cilantro, Miso, Truffle, and Chipotle) round out the selection.

The Templeton – nostalgic, organic and delicious food served up in the heart of Vancouver’s entertainment district on Granville Row. It’s THE plate full of goodness that your mom used to make – or you wished she did! Plug a quarter in the jukebox and enjoy breakfast made with free range eggs and natural bacon. Or bump in for dinner to catch a movie on the big screen and dig into a gourmet burger and an authentic milkshake.

GRANVILLE STREET ~ 157 The Mexican Antojitos y Cantina was born on April 2011 in the belly of the Entertainment district of Vancouver, to provide locals and visitors alike with a true Mexican culinary and drinking experience. Owned by two young passionate Mexican ladies, its great food and charismatic and genuine service delighted the Mexican community first and soon captivated the rest of Vancouver’s foodies who were craving for excellent authentic Mexican dishes. Homemade sauces, fresh ingredients, and only the best quality meats, produce and dairy products are the vertebrae of its menu. The ¨sazon¨ - the distinctive flavor touch- of the owner-chef, is considered by many homesick Mexicans the best in town. The largest selection of tequilas and Mexican beers –and their subsequent related drinks- in town round up the perfect meal for each occasion. Granville Street has long been Vancouver’s Entertainment District. In the forties and fifties and sixties it was known as Theatre Row. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than in any other part of the city. Now adays it is home to bars and eateries, as well as several night clubs. The two longest running entertainment venues on Granville are the Commodore Ballroom and the Orpheum Theatre.

The Edge Social Grille & Lounge is the newest arrival to the bustling heart of downtown Vancouver between Yaletown and the recently revamped Granville Street area. The Edge offers a large, modern yet comfortable room with both dining and lounge seating as well as a generous outdoor patio that runs along the front of the restaurant, set deep into the large street front courtyard. We proudly invite you to experience our tantalizing globally inspired menu with a distinct focus on sourcing fresh local products where possible. YALETOWN

A Trendy Urban Community Yaletown is located on False Creek at the water’s edge in downtown Vancouver and was once a rundown warehouse district. Its rebirth started in the late 1980’s, and it has gradually transformed into a trendy urban community comprising a mix of residential, office, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, and more. The elevated, brick-paved loading docks with their cantilever canopies now house sidewalk tables, providing shade and shelter for the patrons of the many dining and drinking establishments. Today’s Yaletown covers a much wider area than before its rebirth, and is now considered to be the area bounded on the north by Robson Street, to the west by Richards Street, to the considered south by False Creek and to the east by Cambie Street.

GRANVILLE ISLAND ~ 173 Lattimer Gallery specializes in Native Art of the Northwest Coast and is located near Vancouver’s beautiful Granville Island. We are open seven days a week and have complimentary customer parking across from the gallery. We welcome you to browse through our extensive collection, and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. Lattimer Gallery was established in 1986 by Leona Lattimer and her husband, David. Having spent much of their adult lives travelling throughout British Columbia, Leona and David made strong personal and professional connections with many Northwest Coast Native artists. Leona and David continued to foster these relationships with the artists once they settled in Vancouver. Peter Lattimer, the grandson of Leona and David, took over the family business in 2001. It has been especially important to Peter that young First Nations artists within British Columbia are represented within the Northwest Coast Art market. Supporting emerging artists is a strong focus of the gallery.

STUDIO 13 FINE ART is the studio and gallery of visual artist, Alice

Parmelee Rich. Alice’s semi-abstract acrylic paintings capture the colour and energy of the coastal environment. Using plentiful layers of colour and undulating brushstrokes, Alice creates what she describes as ‘elemental scapes’ —painterly, abstract compostions which subtly suggest organic land and sea forms. Alice Rich graduated from the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Her work is included in corporate and private collections throughout Canada, the US, and Europe. 1315 Railspur Alley, Granville Island, BC, V6H 4G9, 604.731.0068, Daily 11am – 6pm, closed Tuesdays www.studio13fineart.com

GRANVILLE ISLAND ~ 175 MONIKA SADRYNA Born in Kรถln, Germany, I trained as a classical dancer, choreographer, and model for 20 years. I always felt clothes were my second skin, an expression of my mood and I designed my own pieces to reflect that on stage. I took this passion and opened Sadryna Design in Hamburg, Germany in 1997. I relocated to Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003, where I create and manufacture each piece from my Railspur Alley Studio. I believe involving the client is important as I strive to reflect and capture their personality in each design.

GRANVILLE ISLAND ~ 179 Tribal Rugs & Art We sell antique and Kilim carpets in all different sizes. Our carpets come from the tribal regions of Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey. Previously located on west Broadway, over the years movie companies and designers have frequented our store. We look forward to seeing more of them in the future. We wholesale as well. We can also make Choobi carpets to order. Our carpets are made in tents by hand by local artisans and not in factories. They become heirlooms that can be passed down from generation to generation. We also have lots of accessories like Baluch saddlebags, wall trim and upholstered ottomans (furniture).

180 ~ Aurum Argentum Goldsmiths Aurum-Argentum Goldsmiths is the creative and artistic workspace of Pernilla Ahrnstedt, Kristen Jones and Gisela Kuckertz. What brought the three goldsmiths together was the desire to create truly artistic jewellery. Granville Island is the perfect place for a studio producing work that goes beyond the commercial approach to jewellery making. The jeewellery is made following classic metal smithing traditions: alloying the metal, pouring an ingot and rolling or drawing it into plate or wire for forming by hand. The elements are then pierced, shaped and soldered together. Once assembled, the piece is given its final finish. Pernilla, Kristen and Gisela each have a strong background in fine art and design that sets the tone for their different styles. The collection runs from simple wedding bands to gorgeous opal, diamond and pearl chokers. The more eccentric peces include a bejewelled salt and papper shaker and an antler headdress festooned with silver ivy.

200~ Friends of the Vancouver Public Library The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is the second largest public library system in Canada, with more than 2.8 million items in its collections, 22 branches, approximately 375,000 cardholders, and nearly nine million item borrowings annually. The administration centre, and also the largest branch, known as the Central Branch, is located at Library Square in downtown Vancouver. Consolidating Vancouver Public Library’s Central Branch, Federal Office Tower, and retail and service facilities, the Library Square occupies a city block. Centred on the block, the library is a nine-story rectangular box containing book stacks and services, surrounded by a free-standing, elliptical, colonnaded wall featuring reading and study areas that are accessed by bridges spanning skylit light wells. The library’s internal glass facade overlooks an enclosed concourse formed by a second elliptical wall that defines the east side of the site. This glass-roofed concourse serves as an entry foyer to the library and the more lively pedestrian activities at ground level. Public spaces surrounding the library form a continuous piazza with parking located below grade. The building’s exterior resembles the Flavian Amphitheatre in Rome (better known by its later name of the Colosseum) although in fact the resemblance is to the present rather than original state of the building.

Royal Lepage is a leader in Canadian real estate since 1913. Founded by Albert LePage when he was just 26 years old, Royal LePage now has nearly 14,000 agents across the country. And we firmly believe that you can only become a leader by being the best. For over 99 years, Royal LePage has led the real estate industry. We helped found the Toronto Real Estate Board and Ontario Real Estate Association, and set the standards for all other real estate companies to follow.

LIBRARY SQUARE ~ 201 The Friends of the Vancouver Public Library are a community of library lovers. Friends **Volunteer**Fund raise**Advocate in support of the Vancouver Public Library. The Library Square Project was the largest capital project ever undertaken by the City of Vancouver. The decision to build the project came after a favourable public referendum in November 1990. The City then held a design competition to choose a design for the new building. The design by Moshe Safdie and DA Architects was by far the most radical design and yet was the public favourite. The one square block project also includes an attached office high-rise, retail shops, restaurants, and underground public parking. The Library building has a rooftop garden designed by Vancouver landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander.

The book’ mark is the libraries very own bookstore. Proceeds go to support the library. get something great and help something great! Locally founded by three UBC art graduates, Flying Wedge Pizza opened their first location in Kitsilano on Peace Day (now Earth Day), 1989. Since then, we have stolen the hearts (and nourished the appetites) of countless pizza lovers across the Lower Mainland. Voted by loyal fans and food critics alike, a simple idea to create pizzas with integrity has blossomed into 20 years of delivering the City’s BEST pizza! Our award-winning wedges weigh up to 3/4 of a pound! They are “fully loaded” with premium gourmet toppings straight to the pizzas’ edge.
