Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Vancouver DOWNTOWN edition. This guide emphasizes and points out the different neighbourhoods of Downtown Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and offers a special welcome to new Vancouverites as well. How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighborhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed.” Well, let me tell you things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighbourhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history. We will let you know who is new in each neighborhood and also let you know if your old favorites are still around. We will tell you where interesting neighbourhoods have sprung up that you may not know about. Do you know these neighborhoods Emery Barnes Park, Crosstown and Railtown? We call them ‘Boutique Neighbourhoods.’ There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard. Having been born and raised in Vancouver and a heritage writer, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day. This guide is meant to be kept for a year and to be taken with you as you visit a different neighbourhood each week or weekend as time allows. If you are a tourist, we are sure you will enjoy it too! So get out and explore your neighbourhoods. Christopher Best

An Insider’s Story of the
Rise & Fall of Canadian Airlines by Sid Fattedad The demise of Canada’s other national air carrier, Canadian Airlines International in 1999 was heart wrenching to employees, unions, management and to the citizens of Canada. Confusion and stories abound as to what actually happened. This book sets the record straight as the man behind the employee rescue plan to save the airline decides to tell his story. Sid Fattedad emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1968 to play drums in a rock and roll band, the Five Man Cargo. Having worked as an articling student in Hong Kong, the lustre of the music industry soon wore off and he found himself working as a junior accounting clerk for Canadian Pacific Airlines. It wasn’t long before Canadian Pacific became CP Air, the planes were painted orange and Sid became senior clerk of corporate accounting. The rising cost of oil in the 1970s, labour unrest and the acquisition of new planes made running an airline hard on the bottom line and the accounting department was always in the forefront. It was work all week, socialize at the pubs on the weekend with a tightly knit group called the ‘boat crew,’ who would often travel to England commandeering river boats on the canals of the Norfolk Broads, visiting pubs along the way. Sid became known as Kato. After receiving his CGA Sid was promoted to Travelling Auditor where he learned first hand CP Air’s overseas operations. The ‘night of the long knives, the Kremlin and ‘The General,’ all play into the story as the 1980s saw a sea of change at CP Air… Colussy fails to purchase Wardair and Sid is named to the board of TransPacific Tours Limited a little known but highly profitable subsidiary company. Don Carty purchases Nordair and Sid becomes Comptroller of CP Air. A backwards take-over. Carty attempts to purchase PWA but is thwarted by the FASB and PWA purchases CP Air. King George Secondary School King George Secondary School is a public secondary school located in the West End of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The school is located in the West End, with two elementary schools feeding in. Some students are from other areas of Vancouver who wish to be in a smaller school environment. Since July 2006, King George Secondary has been approved by International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for students in grades 8, 9, and 10,[2] as one of the only 2 schools in the city to offer the MYP Programme. The school is adjacent to the West End Community Centre, enabling youth to get more involved in their programs. King George is noted for its Technology Immersion program which lasts from grade 8 to 9. Students in the programme use iPads to enhance their core subjects. Most of their assignments are completed online through King George’s Moodle online learning system, which was implemented at the school by Tech Immersion graduates along with a new website in early 2011. Students learn HTML along with traditional computing tasks, as well as how to use professional applications including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign. Students who participate in this program are known in their school as “techies” and have a unique opportunity to have half of their courses with the same group of people for two years. The Technology Immersion program can be followed by several computer-oriented courses in grades 10-12.

22 Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna is one of those restaurants that everyone just cannot get enough of. It is has been around Davie Village for a long time so they must be doing something right. Practically all year round there is a line-up although it is usually bigger in the summertime. Stepho’s serves traditional Greek food and the prices are great, between $7 and $10 per entree. Just a short walk up from Burrard and davie will bring you to Stepho’s with the baby blue facade. They have just opened a second location on Robson Street as well. Transylvania Traditions Bakery Narcisa’s love for good food has turned the Transylvanian Traditions Bakery sweet-shop into one of Vancouver’s premier dessert spots. On her arrival in Canada in 2007, Narcisa Stoian noticed the lack of traditional romanian sweets, which have always been a part of her childhood and her parents’ careers, and decided that Vancouver was the perfect place for her to share her love of romanian cuisine. Since the bakery opened in February 2008, it has been featured in the Vancouver Sun, Canadian Immigrants as well as many local dinner tables. Along with over a dozen preservative-free romanian cakes, Transylvanian Traditions is one of the only places in Canada to make Kurtos Colacs, a delicious, baked sweet dough spiral, dipped in caramel and walnuts.
Judges Indian Cuisine invites you into a world of exotic flavors and time honored traditions in cooking and dining. Experience Indian Cuisine at its finest. Indian cuisine is a combination of many subtle tastes. Flavors are as varied as the climate of India, and as exotic as the people of India. Fragrant, pungent and warm spices from the four corners of the country are delicately blended in meticulous proportions to create the dishes we present to you. Each dish will have its own distinctive flavor and aroma which cannot come from any curry powder from spices which have to be separately prepared each day fresh for each individual dish. The blending and preparation of spices is a centuries-old craft and indispensable to Indian cuisine.

AUTHENTIC QUÉBÉCOIS CUISINE
At Gurkha Kitchen, you will enjoy a distinctive dining experience of fresh herbs and spices unique to the Himalayas, giving you an authentic Nepali flavour. The heart of a Nepali meal consists of daal-bhaat, (lentils-rice) and achaar (chutney), complimented by other main and side dishes of meat and vegetables. For both lunch and dinner daalbhaat remains the staple in most Nepali households. Much less spicy in taste, the more traditional Nepali dishes are influenced by Tibetan and Chinese cuisines even though modern Nepali cuisine boasts a mix of both Tibetan and Indian styled cooking.

My Greek Barber’s Diary by Christopher Best The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime. Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm. His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal. In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver. His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop (continued on page 89)

Our two conveniently located flower shops offer a wide range of superbly designed floral products. These reflect not only the artistic taste of Angela & Gabriel, but also contemporary concepts in floral decoration. David E. White Making a statement at work (for all the right reasons) is an important mission to accomplish. It becomes the difference between blending into the crowd and demanding attention, between worker bee and leader. At the end of the day, if you look the part, you’re half way there – no hard work required. THE SUIT When buying a suit for the office, there are a few things you must look out for – the fabric and fit being the most important. Wool is the most premium suiting material money can buy, and the Italians know how to turn that wool into something special. It is durable (if you care for it properly), so a good wool suit should last you the distance, and as it is a natural fibre it keeps your body at a comfortable temperature all year round.

From freshly prepared Viet subs and rice plates to their infamous spring rolls and Pho noodle soups, Le Viet has gained quite the buzz since its grand opening in early July. If you haven’t tried Le Viet Cuisine, there’s never been a better time than right now!” Locally founded by three UBC art graduates, Flying Wedge Pizza opened their first location in Kitsilano on Peace Day, 1989. 37 BELLISSIMA With little knowledge of the fashion industry, husband and wife team, River and Serena, took a chance and started their own importing business back in 1973. Importing clothes turned out to be a much tougher job than expected, and after 1 year of chasing after shop owners for payment, they decided they’d had enough. Rather than quitting the fashion business all together, they decided to give it one more try and opened up a retail store. In 1975, the first Serena Fashions store opened on Pender Street in downtown Vancouver. In 1981, they joined up with Serena’s sister, Viviana, and expanded to Alberta. Over the years, Serena Fashions has grown from one store with 4 staff members to 22 stores throughout BC and Alberta, with over 200 employees. Robson Street
Robsonstrasse was originally the German shopping district of Vancouver. In the sixties there were delicatessens, bakeries and restaurants as well as a European News store. Today, it is the city’s most fashionable shopping street. Alfred Sung, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel, Rodier Paris and Stephane de Raucourt are just some of the big names on this urban shopping destination. Options for grabbing a bite abound. You can find everything from Schnitzel to Sushi along this bustling thoroughfare. It is also cruising central in the summertime, with cars and sidewalks filled with people enjoying the warm summer air. Rodeo Drive North is another name for Robson Street of today. Besides fashion Robson is home to hotels, specialty shops and a Whole Foods Market further down by Denman Street.

BOOKS
* BIOGRAPHY
The Life & Times of the Legendary
Mr. D
by Christopher Best
This sixth and final book on Arthur Delamont and his Vancouver Boys’ Band is also the first in a series on the History of the Youth Band Movement in Canada. The movement started here in Kitsilano in 1933 when the boy’s won the juvenile band championship of the world at the Chicago World’s Fair. All Vancouver became juvenile band crazy and bands sprouted up everywhere. Everyone wanted their sons/ daughters to play in a band. Arthur started no less than seven himself in and around Vancouver. As he began taking trips with his band to the Old Country (England), in 1934, the boys travelled by train across Canada stopping and playing along the way. Soon the places they visited all wanted youth bands of their own spurred on by the fine playing of his boys and their gentlemanly manner. Arthur’s boys went on to have bands of their own and teach in the schools. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that band became accredited in the public schools in B.C. due to the fine example and hard work of many dedicated music educators. Jump ahead to 2014. Ministers and trustees are cutting the arts programs like never before. Band in the school curriculum is threatened, branded as a frill and easy pickings for ill-informed public officials who know nothing of the efforts it took to establish band in the curriculum in the first place. This book (and subsequent books), set the record straight. They tell the story of how band got into the public school system. The next book in the series is titled: Greater Vancouver School Band Programs from the 1930s to the Present. It records/documents the fine band programs that have and still exist in the public schools today. These books will preserve (continued on page 79)

Granville Street downtown use to be known as Theatre Row in the sixties. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than on any other street in Vancouver. That has changed over the years. Today Granville Street is being revitalized with new businesses coming in from the Granville Bridge up to Georgia Street. Big Box stores are common such as, Winners and Future Shop and the historical Hudson’s Bay Co. Department Store is still located on the corner of Georgia and Granville. A new Nordstom is due in three years. There is an entertainment factor offering good local pubs such as The Lennox Pub and Hennessey’s Irish House. There are also several night clubs located here for the 20 something crowd.

56 THE REFINERY As you’re staring down towards the Granville Street Bridge, the sun sets high in the sky to the West, reflecting a warm pink and vanilla glow over the Granville Entertainment District... it’s almost time for the lights to dim, the music starts bouncing, and the nightlife begins to emerge. This is the Granville Street routine, and it’s been like this for years, but we’ve added another element. The Refinery’s partial graffitti sign on the second floor lures curious diners and experienced cocktailers to something seldom seen on Granville Street. We welcome all of you to our home. Stackhouse Burger Bar “A Cut Above – Stylish new burger restaurant opens its doors intent on revitalizing the dining scene in the Granville Entertainment District.” The menu, conceptualized and executed daily by Chef Shahab Ghaemi (formerly of Crime Lab, Century House and Lucy Mae Brown), is a testament of his true dedication to the quest for the “Perfect Burger”. With ten on offer, as well as one foot-long “EuroDog” and three slider options, there is surely something on his menu for everyone. Surprisingly unique salad options, truffled poutine with bocconcini and perfectly crisp onion rings with one of the house-made aiolis (Cilantro, Miso, Truffle, and Chipotle) round out the selection.
The Templeton – nostalgic, organic and delicious food served up in the heart of Vancouver’s entertainment district on Granville Row. It’s THE plate full of goodness that your mom used to make – or you wished she did! Plug a quarter in the jukebox and enjoy breakfast made with free range eggs and natural bacon. Or bump in for dinner to catch a movie on the big screen and dig into a gourmet burger and an authentic milkshake.

Granville Street has long been Vancouver’s Entertainment District. In the forties and fifties and sixties it was known as Theatre Row. There were more neon signs on Granville Street than in any other part of the city. Now adays it is home to bars and eateries, as well as several night clubs. The two longest running entertainment venues on Granville are the Commodore Ballroom and the Orpheum Theatre.
The Edge Social Grille & Lounge is the newest arrival to the bustling heart of downtown Vancouver between Yaletown and the recently revamped Granville Street area. The Edge offers a large, modern yet comfortable room with both dining and lounge seating as well as a generous outdoor patio that runs along the front of the restaurant, set deep into the large street front courtyard. We proudly invite you to experience our tantalizing globally inspired menu with a distinct focus on sourcing fresh local products where possible. Taste our seasonal menu created by Chef Tyler Canton.
Granville Street
The Mexican Antojitos y Cantina was born on April 2011 in the belly of the Entertainment district of Vancouver, to provide locals and visitors alike with a true Mexican culinary and drinking experience. Owned by two young passionate Mexican ladies, its great food and charismatic and genuine service delighted the Mexican community first and soon captivated the rest of Vancouver’s foodies who were craving for excellent authentic Mexican dishes. Homemade sauces, fresh ingredients, and only the best quality meats, produce and dairy products are the vertebrae of its menu. The ¨sazon¨ - the distinctive flavor touch- of the owner-chef, is considered by many homesick Mexicans the best in town. The largest selection of tequilas and Mexican beers –and their subsequent related drinks- in town round up the perfect meal for each occasion.

The Library Square Project was the largest capital project ever undertaken by the City of Vancouver. The decision to build the project came after a favourable public referendum in November 1990. The City then held a design competition to choose a design for the new building. The design by Moshe Safdie and DA Architects was by far the most radical design and yet was the public favourite. The one square block project also includes an attached office high-rise, retail shops, restaurants, and underground public parking. The Library building has a rooftop garden designed by Vancouver landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander.

ally of Canada. By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats. His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras.

Yaletown is located on False Creek at the water’s edge in downtown Vancouver and was once a rundown warehouse district. Its rebirth started in the late 1980’s, and it has gradually transformed into a trendy urban community comprising a mix of residential, office, restaurants, boutiques, cafes, and more. The elevated, brickpaved loading docks with their cantilever canopies now house sidewalk tables, providing shade and shelter for the patrons of the many dining and drinking establishments. Today’s Yaletown covers a much wider area than before its rebirth, and is now considered to be the area bounded on the north by Robson Street, to the west by Richards Street, to the considered south by False Creek and to the east by Cambie Street.

Surrounded by marinas and enriched by views, Granville Island is located on the south shore of False Creek, in Downtown Vancouver. Granville Island is connected to the city by a causeway, epitomizing the West Coast outdoorsy lifestyle. Day and night, it’s a thriving warren of shops, artist’s studios, restaurants, theatres, nightclubs and galleries. It’s easy to think that False Creek has always been the watery playground on the inner city. Most evenings, primarily from April to October, the sheltered finger off Burrard Inlet teems with a mix of canoes, dragon boats, kayaks, sculls, sailboats, tugboats, and stinkpots. studio and gallery of visual artist, Alice Parmelee Rich. Alice’s semi-abstract acrylic paintings capture the colour and energy of the coastal environment. Using plentiful layers of colour and undulating brushstrokes, Alice creates what she describes as ‘elementalscapes’ —painterly, abstract compostions which subtly suggest organic land and sea forms. Alice Rich graduated from the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr University of Art & Design. The gallery displays the work of Peter Kiss and Tania Gleave. Peter’s work is 2, 2 1/2 and 3 dimensional wood sculpture which combines humour with social commentary. Tania’s work often combines oil, inks, beeswax and pastels to create colour studies with subtle tonal and textured variations.

MONIKA SADRYNA Born in Köln, Germany, I trained as a classical dancer, choreographer, and model for 20 years. I always felt clothes were my second skin, an expression of my mood and I designed my own pieces to reflect that on stage. I took this passion and opened Sadryna Design in Hamburg, Germany in 1997. I relocated to Granville Island, Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003, where I create and manufacture each piece from my Railspur Alley Studio. I believe involving the client is important as I strive to reflect and capture their personality in each design.
98 Aurum-Argentum Goldsmiths is the creative and artistic workspace of Pernilla Ahrnstedt, Kristen Jones and Gisela Kuckertz. What brought the three goldsmiths together was the desire to create truly artistic jewellery. Granville Island is the perfect place for a studio producing work that goes beyond the commercial approach to jewellery making. The jeewellery is made following classic metal smithing traditions: alloying the metal, pouring an ingot and rolling or drawing it into plate or wire for forming by hand. The elements are then pierced, shaped and soldered together. Once assembled, the piece is given its final finish. Pernilla, Kristen and Gisela each have a strong background in fine art and design that sets the tone for their different styles. The collection runs from simple wedding bands to gorgeous opal, diamond and pearl chokers. The more eccentric peces include a bejewelled salt and papper shaker and an antler headdress festooned with silver ivy.

99 Katherine McLean invites you to visit her working studio in Railspur Alley on Granville Island. “As a contemporary artist, my work is fundamentally representational although it drifts into abstraction where shapes dissolve and melt into new colours and movements. I am not an abstract artist because I am drawn to an overall experience that anchors us to our world in many tangible ways. For me, the leading actor in this endeavour is colour and light as I think these carry the emotion with which we define and appreciate our world. I do not rely on colour theory, at least not consciously, but instead, I simply love colour. Matisse said, “Seek the strongest colour effect possible; the content is of no importance”. He also said “ With colour one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.” I constantly seek that energy and it feels so much more important than the content. My sculpture medium is clay and coloured glazes and I choose the challenging medium of encaustic (hot beeswax and resin pigmented with oil paint and dried pigments) for my paintings.

William James Frampton- Just cannot resist the spring here in Vancouver. It has exploded out of the dark misty winter. Tulips are a dramatic signifier of renewal. When the sun pours onto them they glow. There has always been a dissonance between tradition and my experience. I create images of my experience. I shared these images and found my connection. 117 Pirate Adventures Canada’s objectives are to provide for a fun, interactive theatre based production/adventure program in the Vancouver area waterways. These packages are designed and built around a pirate motif, utilizing a 50-foot tri-hulled boat, retrofitted into the profile and layout of a classic pirate ship. Note: Presently rated as the number “2” activity in Ottawa market area and “2nd” in Victoria, by online community reviewer “Trip Advisor” Our aim is to tap into the child’s imagination, transforming him or her into a pirate complete with pirate fashions, face painting, and pirate name. Our major marketing motto is “be a kid with your kid”, our focus is families having a great time together. For 75 minutes, our stable pirate vessel would navigate the local waters, providing non-stop activities, discovering treasure maps, solving the mysteries, recovering sunken treasure, fending off “bad” pirates with our water cannons, and generally living the adventures of a pirate for a moment in time.

Books with local content but world-wide appeal.
Sid Fattedad former VP of Canadian Airlines and the man who spearheaded the employee buy-out plan back in the day finally tells the inside story as to what actually happened causing Canada to lose its second national carrier. He cut the hair of most CEO’s and business leaders in downtown Vancouver for five decades. His tales from the chair are hilarious, heart-warming and lovingly told.

This is the first book that chronicles the history of the youth band movement in Canada which started in Vancouver in 1933. It tells how band became an accredited course in the public school system and the dedicated group of educators who were responsible.
