Welcome to the Neighbourhoods of Metro Vancouver. We now have 10 guides. See our website to read them all. This is where the locals shop. It is for both locals and visitors alike and are always well received by new Vancouverites. East Vancouver is larger than most realize. Its official boundaries are from Boundary Road in the east to Ontario Street in the west and from Marine Drive in the south to Hastings Street in the north. There are several skytrain stations on the eastside, Joyce-Collingwood, Rupert Street, Renfrew Street, Commercial Drive and Main Street. There are several new community centres located on the eastside, Creekside, Mt. Pleasant, Hillcrest, Trout Lake, Kensington, Killarney, Champlain Heights and Sunset. Not many people know that the youth band movement in Canada started in Vancouver in 1933. In the early sixties band became an accredited course in Vancouver high schools and ever since wonderful mussic programs have thrived all over Metro Vancouver. We want to tell you about some of them in a segment we call Musical Moments. Our guides are meannt to be taken with you as you visit each neighbourhood. So get out and explore the neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s eastside. Christopher Best

27 Tiny Finery is a space that allows its owners Stephanie and Keli to create, share and sell their artistic work. Our wee shop carries handmade jewellery, ceramics and gifts from a variety of local artists. Tiny Finery has a jewellery studio in the shop which allows customers to see the process that goes into making each piece. The shop will also hold evening classes so we can share our knowledge and love of creating with you! A favorite activity of mine as a child was to dress up in my grandmother’s vintage clothes and jewellery pretending I was a character in a British mystery program. She had an extensive collection of art nouveau brooches and costume jewellery. This led to a lifelong fondness for jewellery, textiles, and who-dunnits. Long Live Cats and Dogs is located in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood of East Vancouver. We began this business to truly help pets, educate consumers and allow people to make informed decisions when it comes to their pet’s health and longevity. We also strive to promote individual artisans and crafters by bringing in unique, handmade items for your pet, and we focus on items created with recycled or environmentallyfriendly materials. We will not sell any products, no matter how popular, if we feel it is detrimental to your pet’s health. All of our cat and dog treats, raw food and dry food are Canadian made.

“By Jove What A Band” General Gordon Elementary School is located on Bayswater Street two blocks north of Broadway. It was here in the little yellow school house on the school grounds that the world famous Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band was founded in 1928 by Arthur W. Delamont. Band rehearsals soon moved into the school basement when the band got bigger and continued there through fifty years of unparalleld success until the band folded in 1974. Arthur Delamont, who founded the Vancouver Kitsilano Boys Band in 1928, was a pioneer in the field of music education of our youth. He was the first to travel extensively with youth bands and to show that youths between the ages of 11 and 19 could be developed into a first class musical organization. He did this by taking first place in virtually every festival he entered, starting with the Victoria Provincial Championship in 1931. He went on to win the National Junior Band Championship title in Toronto that same year. Then in 1933, the Worlds Junior Band Championship title in Chicago. His wins were not marginal wins but without hesitation as one adjudicator remarked in Chicago. By Jove what a band’ and “there was little doubt that they totally outclassed their nearest competition,” were other adjudicators remarks. In 1934, he began taking his band to England, where he took first place in the West of England music festival and again in 1936 at the Crystal Palace where his boys beat out 35 adult bands to take the coveted Cassells Challenge Shield (continued on page 34).

34 By the mid 40s, Mr. D had started no less than six school bands, from which he selected the best for his Kitsilano Band, they were the West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Grandview, Point Grey Junior High School and the General Gordon school bands. As more and more bands began to spring up in the school system, he eventually relinquished control of all but his Kitsilano Boys Band. Over the course of fifty years his band won 200 championships, made 14 European tours and attended 5 world fairs. The tours lasted from 2 to 5 months and three concerts a day were normal routine. While most bands would travel and perform only a handful of concerts on tour, his boys were hired out to perform engagements like professionals at seaside resorts through-out Britain, often booked well in advance for their next tour. His success story is filled with humor, excitement, tragedy and love. In 1914 he was a member of the Territorial Staff Band of the Salvation Army, on board the Empress of Ireland, which sank in the St. Lawrence, with a loss of over 1000. In 1939 he was in England with his boys when war was declared and had to sneak out under the cover of searchlights and balloons, zigzagging home down the coast of Africa and across the Atlantic, trying to avoid German U-boats. His legacy is the thousands of boys who passed through his organization and the lessons they learned. Often their sons went on to play with him as well. And over the years they became the who’s who of the Canadian music establishment where his boys filled the first chairs in symphony orchestras. www.warfleetpress.wordpress.com BELOW: c1933 The band at the Chicago Worlds’ Fair

* BIOGRAPHY
My Greek Barber’s Diary by Christopher Best The heartwarming true story of how one man influenced so many over the course of his lifetime. Born in a small village in Militsa, Greece in 1935, George Chronopoulos lived through the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and the Greek Civil War of 1944 - 1949. In the early days his village had no electricity yet his family lived like kings on their farm. His father decided that he would become a barber in Pilos, where he had moved as a young boy to be by the sea for health reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal. In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver. His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop. He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. (see p 91)

Since the rise of all the sky train stations around Greater Vancouver, shops have sprung up around their base. At Main Street, stores have relocated north on Main and along Terminal Avenue on both sides. This is where the new Long & McQuade Music store is located and you really need to check it out. A pop into the train station will lend itself to a few more shops and fast food stops including a MacDonalds. Up on 2nd Avenue going east you will find Frame of Mind and a few other interesting shops and down below on 1st Avenue are several more including the Elliott Louis Gallery. Next to the train station is The Party Bazaar and Cloverdale Paints. A Tim Horton has also opened nearby.

False Creek Flats
The area bordering Main Street to Cambie Street and from False Creek up to Broadway, has been transformed. This part of Vancouver, known as the False Creek Flats, has long been an industrial area, with light manufacturing being carried on primarily. Over the years there has been a slow transformation taking place, with restaurants and eateries becoming ever more plentiful. Companies such as Toko Foods and Milano Coffee still carry on their manufacturing plants but they also run higher profile eateries, at street level. The area is bustling with other interesting businesses as well. Eclectic in nature, one never knows what one will find around the next corner, which is all part of the fun.
56 The development taking place was home to the Olympic Village in February 2010. The Village is now a valuable legacy, both for the community and for sport. The Vancouver Village has been developed into a model sustainable community with market and affordable housing, parkland, and office and shopping complexes as seen in the artists conception below. Businesses presently located on the Flats, besides Toko and Milano, which are worth taking a look at include The Butler Did It, a sandwich stop on 2nd Avenue on the way to the Cambie bridge. Emelle’s Catering on 7th Avenue, The Party Bazaar on 2nd, for all your party costumes. A&B Party Rentals on west 4th Avenue.Upright Decor, rentals and event design, located on West 5th Avenue. Solly’s Bagelry located at 7th and Yukon Street. Back up on Broadway, rent a bike at Rain City Bikes and see the Flats in style. They are located at Manitoba and Broadway, just a few steps up the hill. The Jacqeline Connor Collection is located at 46 west 6th Avenue, for the latest in fashion. As well, a few designer outlet stores can be found. There are two framing galleries, one located on the Flats, the other located on second avenue just east of Main Street. The one on the Flats is called Final Touch Frames and the one on 2nd Avenue is called Frame Of Mind. The best time to visit the Flats, is during the week as not everyone is open on the weekends. I have only mentioned a few of the many interesting businesses, so come down and have a look for yourself. (Photo by Evan Leeson)

Tired of the same old costume shop? Try Watts. Don’t let the frumpy name fool you: if you’re not impressed by the homage to our founder, the brilliant thespian Sir Albert Watts, who brought Watts Costumes to Vancouver from England over 65 years ago, then think of us by this acronym: Wardrobe is Abundant, Theatrical, Top-notch, and Sanitary. At Watts Costumes you won’t be greeted by a surly counter clerk, tossing you a thrift-store throwaway bedecked with stains, cigarette holes and odors that make you feel a tad more intimate with your predecessor than you might wish. And then double-charged for the privilege. No. Here your festive spirit will ignite the moment you ascend the stairs to our colourful establishment - an extravaganza of dazzling costumery, efficiently managed by our happy and helpful team. (Equally happy and helpful at Halloween but a bit more bedraggled.) The rest of the year keeps us busy with corporate events, Christmas, Easter, theme weddings, theatre, the film industry and just about any occasion you can imagine. Our 1950’s jukebox, disco ball, barber chair and theatre seats add to the distinctive ambiance. The majority of our costumes are one-of-a kind, lovingly crafted by our very own in-house designer.

60 Design & Style We are a complete special event decorating company that offers a wide range of design services. Whether you are planning a private party, corporate function, or a wedding, we can explore all the design options that are possible to make your event spectacular. The event design process starts with an initial consultation meeting to determine the type of event you wish to have. We can uncover the “design & style” of the event, that will be enhanced in the décor. Often there is a particular colour palette to set the mood. If you are having a small private party or a large corporate gala you may have a specific theme that will be represented. Using innovative décor we will give your guests something unique to experience and indulge their senses. When designing weddings most of our clients wish the décor to be fresh, simple, classic and elegant, with romantic touches that would reflect their own personal style. Along with style we can reveal other design elements like colour and lighting and how they will play a very important role in effecting the atmosphere.

Le Marché St. George is now open in Vancouver. Ceramics artist Janaki Larsen and her friends have opened this interesting grocery on St. George Street just off Main. These photos are stolen from its sneak peek. “We will be open from 9:00 a.m – 6:00 pm Saturday and 10:00-5:00 Sunday, Tues-Fri 8:00-6:00. Come over and have a coffee, check out Janaki’s pots, our teas from England, handmade cheeses from Agassiz, wool blankets from Oaxaca and other quirky goods.” PS try the “St. George” cheese from Agassiz, BC.
62 Swiss Bakery has provided Vancouver with a variety of delectable goods for close to 20 years. Swiss Bakery cultivates baking in a European style that accentuates original and hand crafted goods, like our Artisan breads, pastries, and cakes. Our soft, traditional German pretzel is one of Swiss Bakery’s specialties and is one of Vancouver Magazine’s Top 100 Best Things to Eat and Drink in Vancouver (2009). This amazing bakery...3rd avenue off Main is going to become my weekend hangout if it’s not careful! I stepped inside and was immediately reminded of bakeries back home growing up. All different breads, just that home made look and feel to everything... Picked up many breads which were devoured at home (there was a pecan one which they cut up for us and we managed to make it last a week!). There is some seating inside and out, and the usual choice of hot drinks. Must try the coffee next time!

1 KINGSWAY ... in the heart of Mount Pleasant
An exciting new community facility is located in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood! 1 Kingsway features a new community centre, library, child care centre, rental housing, and underground parking. This project reflects Vancouver’s City Plan vision for developing neighbourhood “centres” that bring together multiple civic services. Principles of sustainability will guide the planning and design of this project to provide a safe and healthy building which makes efficient use of our natural resources and leaves the best legacy for the citizens of Vancouver. A new 30,750 square foot Mount Pleasant Community Centre will meet the service demands of a growing community and will be more centrally located at 1 Kingsway, within the area it serves. The old community centre at 16th Avenue and Ontario Street has served the Mount Pleasant community for over 35 years. Over the past decade the centre’s cramped quarters, service limitations and need for seismic upgrading have made it clear that a new facility was needed. The new Mount Pleasant Branch library will double in size from 5,900 square feet to 12,000 square feet enabling Vancouver Public Library to better serve Mount Pleasant’s fast growing community. A larger branch will mean more books and more services including a computer training area, a larger children’s area, a reading lounge, and improvements in reference and information services. 3 Corners Child Care Centre is a brand new facility located in the Mount Pleasant Centre at 1 Kingsway.

74 HARKNESS & Co. BUTCHERS Centrally located in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver, Harkness & Co. aims to provide the highest quality, locally sourced products and cuts of meat. The Harkness and Co. butcher shop and training annex prides itself in providing the finest meat and poultry to the local community and restaurants, as well as providing training classes in various food production techniques. There is a growing concern among Vancouverites regarding how we source and consume our food which we at Harkness & Co. wish to address. At Harkness & Co. all of our products are sourced from local, ethical organizations, and broken down in-house from the carcass in order to provide every cut of meat available. Kul Cup Organic Soft Ice Cream Our ice cream is made from Avalon organic milk, Avalon organic whipped cream, organic milk powder, organic sugar, and organic stabilizer. This results in a very smooth, creamy and milky taste. the hach is run by mother & daughter team Young and Tara, and was opened in June 2010. A love for high-quality stationery, plus a homesickness for Korea and Korean-made products informed the basis of our shop’s selection. Aside from our online shop, we run a small brick & mortar store located in Vancouver, Canada. Inside, you will find many items (including clothing, shoes, and accessories) that are not currently available online. Aside from honouring our Korean heritage, we carry items made locally, nationally, and in small doses, internationally. We also design and make our own products here in Vancouver.

The General Public
Uptown Mt. Pleasant
The General Public is a sushi joint with a nightclub vibe! The walls are decorated with pop culture paper mache sculptures (all sporting antlers). The theme of the restaurant is (if you look on the business card) MISO HORNY, hence the antlers or horns. It is all very tongue in cheek and aimed at the 20 something crowd. It is a place to experience and get lost in and not to take too seriously. Being a sushi joint there are all sorts of sushi dishes to try and some other items as well, such as a variety of Japanese Curry bowls. They have just opened on the corner of 17th and Main. This corner (at the very end of Mt. Pleasant) is really developing fast with a new Shoppers Drugs across 17th avenue and the venerable Granville Island Toy Company opposite on the eastside of Main Street.
The Granville Island Toy Company This store has quickly become a staple of young families on Vancouver’s East side. With its friendly neighborhood feel and helpful staff, shopping for toys has never been more convenient. Mention the name “The Granville Island Toy Company” and seldom will you find a Vancouverite who doesn’t know what you are talking about. Their flagship store (located in Kids Market on Granville Island) has been serving generations of families for almost 30 years. People who used to come in as children are now coming to the store with their own kids! The Granville Island Toy Company is a family run business so they care just as much as you do about the toys your children play. Unlike the “big box stores”, the owners and staff hand select what comes into the store. Product is based on quality, not on volume. “We focus on finding suppliers who care for kids as much as we do. If it’s not goodenough for our own children to play with, then it’s not good enough for our customers.” Their motto: “We don’t cease to play because we grow old, we grow old because we cease to play.” G.B Shaw

Uptown Mt. Pleasant For over 15 years Murata has offered customers distinct Japanese tableware and gifts at a good value. Over this time we have seen more people in North America became interested in, and familiar with, Japanese culture - particularly with the Japanese food culture. We have also witnessed more people seeking Japanese decorative items to to personalize their homes. This seems to be a natural movement to be found in a multi-culture city like Vancouver. We do not want to be just an ordinary store selling Japanese tableware and gifts. We are hoping to better communicate with our customers by promoting the concept of “WA LIFESTYLE,” which brings you a feeling of warmth and peace in your life. The Japanese character “WA” originally meant harmony, peace, and balance. It was a guiding concept in Japanese culture with various subtle yet different associated meanings.

Materials are then sorted, organized and prepared for the store. Most importantly, we come up with a variety of innovative uses for everything we collect. Artists, designers, teachers, students, daycare workers and families rely on us for providing one of a kind art materials. Local industries are happy to have us haul away their unwanted goodies thereby reducing their disposal costs. Come by and check out our current stock; you’ve never seen a store like this

Why choose compounds over comercially available products? Imagine if your child needs to take medication, but is disgusted with the taste of the large pill. She spits it onto the floor. You toss the dirty pill into the garbage and try again with another pill. The same instance occurs. Was part of the pill absorbed? What do you do now? What if the pill was flavoured and smaller? Imagine how easy it would be for your kid to swallow kid-sized pills. The medicine stays in, they enjoy the taste and you won’t have wasted any of the pills! Medications are often difficult for a variety of patients to take. Think outside of children: people afraid of needles, the elderly, those with allergies, and even our furry friends at home! Medications on the market can be filled with ingredients causing the patient to reject the medication. Our compounding is accessible for your needs, and can modify medications by extracting certain products like gluten sugar, soy, casein and even dyes. Plus we are able to customize dosages, forms, as well as strengths, so that medications can be taken as both prescribing doctor and patient see fit! Extra Services for our Customers: * Free usage of in-house blood pressure monitor * Free blood pressure and glucose monitoring booklets * Free lessons on how to use blood glucose meters

An Insider’s Story of the
Rise & Fall of Canadian Airlines by Sid Fattedad The demise of Canada’s other national air carrier, Canadian Airlines International in 1999 was heart wrenching to employees, unions, management and to the citizens of Canada. Confusion and stories abound as to what actually happened. This book sets the record straight as the man behind the employee rescue plan to save the airline decides to tell his story. Sid Fattedad emigrated to Vancouver from Hong Kong in 1968 to play drums in a rock and roll band, the Five Man Cargo. Having worked as an articling student in Hong Kong, the lustre of the music industry soon wore off and he found himself working as a junior accounting clerk for Canadian Pacific Airlines. It wasn’t long before Canadian Pacific became CP Air, the planes were painted orange and Sid became senior clerk of corporate accounting. The rising cost of oil in the 1970s, labour unrest and the acquisition of new planes made running an airline hard on the bottom line and the accounting department was always in the forefront. It was work all week, socialize at the pubs on the weekend with a tightly knit group called the ‘boat crew,’ who would often travel to England commandeering river boats on the canals of the Norfolk Broads, visiting pubs along the way. Sid became known as Kato. After receiving his CGA Sid was promoted to Travelling Auditor where he learned first hand CP Air’s overseas operations. The ‘night of the long knives, the Kremlin and ‘The General,’ all play into the story as the 1980s saw a sea of change at CP Air… Colussy fails to purchase Wardair and Sid is named to the board of TransPacific Tours Limited a little known but highly profitable subsidiary company. Don Carty purchases Nordair and Sid becomes Comptroller of CP Air. A backwards take-over. Carty attempts to purchase PWA but is thwarted by the FASB and PWA purchases CP Air. The Life & Times of the Legendary
Mr. D by Christopher Best This sixth and final book on Arthur Delamont and his Vancouver Boys’ Band is also the first in a series on the History of the Youth Band Movement in Canada. The movement started here in Kitsilano in 1933 when the boy’s won the juvenile band championship of the world at the Chicago World’s Fair. All Vancouver became juvenile band crazy and bands sprouted up everywhere. Everyone wanted their sons/ daughters to play in a band. Arthur started no less than seven himself in and around Vancouver. As he began taking trips with his band to the Old Country (England), in 1934, the boys travelled by train across Canada stopping and playing along the way. Soon the places they visited all wanted youth bands of their own spurred on by the fine playing of his boys and their gentlemanly manner. Arthur’s boys went on to have bands of their own and teach in the schools. It wasn’t until the early 1960s that band became accredited in the public schools in B.C. due to the fine example and hard work of many dedicated music educators. Jump ahead to 2014. Ministers and trustees are cutting the arts programs like never before. Band in the school curriculum is threatened, branded as a frill and easy pickings for ill-informed public officials who know nothing of the efforts it took to establish band in the curriculum in the first place. This book (and subsequent books), set the record straight. They tell the story of how band got into the public school system. The next book in the series is titled: Greater Vancouver School Band Programs from the 1930s to the Present. It records/documents the fine band programs that have and still exist in the public schools today. These books will preserve forever the band legacy of not only Vancouver but eventually of Canada.
