Welcome to the Neighborhoods of Suburban Vancouver. This book is meant to inform our readers about the amazing happenings going on throughout the neighborhoods of Metro Vancouver. It is for both locals and visitors alike and should prove useful to new Vancouverites as well. How often have you heard someone say, “Oh, I drive by that neighborhood all the time but I was there 20 years ago and nothing has changed. Well, let me tell you, things have changed all over Metro Vancouver. The neighborhoods are buzzing with activity and new developments and of course great local history. How many people know that White Rock is part of Surrey? Or that Surrey is the second biggest municipality in the Lower Mainland. Discover the new neighborhood up at SFU called Univercity and the amazing changes in and around Port Moody not to mention Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. Do you know where Morgan Crossing is located because you should. There is so much to discover right here in our own back yard. Having been born and raised in Vancouver, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city and about the great changes we are continuing to see to this day! So get out and explore the neighborhoods of Metro Vancouver. You will not be disappointed. Christopher Best

AMBLESIDE VILLAGE
Beautiful Beach Community Below The Mountains Ambleside lies on the waterfront and most of its shops line the streets of Bellevue and the main street of Marine Drive. There are lots of cafes, restaurants, clothing and boutique and specialty food stores. Walking through Ambleside is truly a treat and the beach is only a half block away. A great place to watch the Alaskan cruise ships sailing during summer and the carol ships during Christmas. Ambleside is the first community you encounter on Marine Drive just west of the Lions Gate Bridge. Visit the waterfront parks and old ferry ticket office which used to sell tickets to passengers going to and coming from Vancouver before the bridge was built. Above Ambleside is the British Properties which was built by the CPR in the 1940s and the reason for building the bridge.

16 ~ The Avant Gardener As the name implies, here at the Avant Gardener you’ll find that something new and special in the world of gardening. Always ahead of trends, we search locally and abroad for products to enhance your home and garden. The Avant Gardener was conceived in 1988 and is still owned and operated by Darlene Sanders, an avid gardener herself, with a passion for old garden roses. The store is brimming with an enticing collection of functional and decorative accessories for the home and garden. Quality tools, books, seeds, bulbs, stationery, birdfeeders, furniture and gorgeous pots are irresistibly displayed together with fine giftware and fragrant bath products. Our store instills a fresh yet soothing feeling with its cream and Wedgewood green colour scheme, lofty space and craftsmanly air of a turn-of-the-century department store. The distinction between outdoors and in is softened with internal windows and parkland murals lining the tall display units. An upstairs and trellised back patio add to the charm.

Catch A Ferry To The Sunshine Coast The highway ends and ferry travel begins for those heading to Bowen Island, the Sunshine Coast and Nanaimo. Home to about 1,000 residents, Horseshoe Bay is actually part of a much larger municipality: the District of West Vancouver, one of Canada’s wealthiest residential communities. Ferries fleet, a marina, shops, restaurants, pubs, and a restful park and playground at the water’s edge. Recreation in the vicinity is more than abundant: boating, kayaking, scuba diving, whale watching, golf and skiing. You can visit Tiddley Cove and see Capilano Golf Course along the way. Horseshoe Bay is a must see! This favorite spot for Vancouverites is quaint and beautiful. Catch the ferry to Bowen Island if you have the time. Bowen Island is about a half hour by ferry from Horseshoe Bay. BOWEN ISLAND
Artists Colony Twenty Minutes From Horseshoe Bay Bowen Island is a small island across from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. It takes only 20 minutes to get there by ferry. Around Snug Cove is a 600 acre park called Crippen Park, so there’s a lot to explore. A nice easy walk is to the pretty Bridal Veil Falls and fish ladder (about 10 minutes), or on to Killarney Lake about a 45 minute walk from Snug Cove. About three thousand artists, daily commuters, writers and happy retirees live on Bowen’s 52 sq. kilometers. The ferry pulls into aptly named Snug Harbour, with its historic Union Steamship Company store, its Regional Park information site, and its commercial centre. Stroll the harbour and see artisans in summer. The Pier has good eateries as well.

24 ~ Lions Bay Art Gallery Welcome to Doc’s Restaurant & Pub. We are located on Bowen Island, a short distance from Vancouver in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. Bowen Island has a long history as a holiday resort destination. A name closely associated with that history is the Union Steamship Company of British Columbia. In the early 1900’s holiday excursionists boarded luxury passenger ships headed for the ‘Happy Isle.’ Their day could be spent at large company picnics, walking the trails around Deep Bay or Killarney Lake or taking a dip in the cool clear waters of Howe Sound. The evenings could be spent dancing at the Dance Pavilion or just enjoying the company of friends. Some stayed the weekend in one of nearly 200 cottages owned by the Union Steamship Company. You can capture a bit of the magic of times past with a visit to our quaint resort. You can walk the same trails that have been traveled for almost a century, or sleep in one of two original Union Steamship cabins. A visit to Doc Morgan’s Restaurant & Pub will give you a taste of the history of the island.

DEEP COVE
Affectionately Referred To As ‘the cove’ It is affectionately referred to as ‘the cove’ by the locals. Located at the foot of Mount Seymour, the cove faces due east, fronting on to Indian Arm, itself a branch of Burrard Inlet, which forms Vancouver’s inner harbour. The area is the traditional territory of the TsleilWaututh and Sḵwxwú7mesh, the indigenous, of the Coast Salish First Nations. Deep Cove is 13 kilometres (8 miles) from downtown Vancouver. Poet and novelist Malcolm Lowry and his wife Margerie lived on and off in a squatters shack from 1940 to 1954 here in what is now Cates Park. Lowry won the Governor General’s Award for his novel Under the Volcano.

Hop on a bus up to Upper Lonsdale. Stroll more shops and visit the eateries. Be sure to look behind you at the view of Vancouver and the harbour. Grouse Mountain is not far away and you can take the gondola up to the top for the most scenic vista available in the lower mainland. In winter you can go skiing. To the east is Seymour Mountain. You can drive up Seymour and see more great views. These mountains have remained virtually untouched since time immortal. THE EAST VILLAGE
Once The Popular Resort Town Of New Brighton One of Vancouver’s oldest neighborhoods, the East Village is primarily residential, with a dense strip of shops and services along East Hastings Street and in pockets between Nanaimo Street, Kamloops, Penticton and Renfrew Streets. The residences are mostly single family detached dwellings, with some multi-family buildings. There is substantial parkland, and the area north of Hastings is partially zoned for light industrial. In the early days, called Hastings-Sunrise, situated on the northern block of the original Vancouver plan site, produced the popular resort of New Brighton. This weekend retreat, close to where New Brighton Park is now, was a favourite with loggers, mill workers and vacationers from New Westminster. 34 ~ Fortuna Bakery & Deli ONE BOOT AT A TIME For Rino Orsato, one of Vancouver’s most recognized and celebrated shoemakers, shoes are more than a well-honed craft. They also tell a story. Mr. Orsato’s shop with its shelves of shoes and photo albums of famous clientele tells the story of a man who started with a simple skill and built himself a legacy. Visit him at Dayton Boots! In the beginning, Dayton Boots was just a ‘hobby’ to C.H. (Charlie) Wohlford. Mr. Wohlford, a club manager at the time, was for years well known by B.C. loggers because he had worked as a troubleshooter for the Holt Caterpillar Tractor Company. During the Second World War the loggers were unable to get their boots properly repaired. At a bull session with a few loggers Mr.Wohlford said he would fix all of the loggers’ boots. When he wasn’t pouring whiskey he tinkered with repairing logging boots for his patrons. The complaint was that the caulks were kicking out. Mr. Wohlford repaired the boots himself, driving new caulks into the soles.

THE HEIGHTS
Burnaby Heights A Unique Neighborhood Willingdon Heights is a neighbourhood in Burnaby. It is named after a major Burnaby thoroughfare Willingdon Avenue, connecting North Burnaby with Kingsway and the Metrotown area in the south. The Heights as it is called by locals, runs along Hastings Street from Willingdon to Boundary and is home to a unique and varied collection of businesses. There are several great bakeries and deli’s, a great musical instrument store that still repairs instruments. A brand new Safeway and lots of small stores to keep you busy. This neighborhood reminds me the most of the Vancouver of old, where everyone shopped in their own quaint little area before the malls and big box stores arrived.

46 ~ The Community At Simon Fraser
UniverCity THE COMMUNITY AT SIMON FRASER UniverCity on Burnaby Mountain is a model sustainable community neighbouring one of Canada’s premier educational institutions, Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, British Columbia. Developed through a collaborative and integrated planning process, UniverCity is designed to be a compact, mixed-use and transit-oriented community founded on our Four Cornerstones of Sustainability: Equity, Economy, Education and Environment. The groundwork for UniverCity was laid in 1963, when Arthur Erickson and Geoff Massey submitted their initial plan for SFU. Complementing their vision for the mountain-top campus, their plan saw the new university anchoring a dense residential community. It took another 30 years before the implementation of this initial plan would begin with SFU agreeing to the transfer of 332 hectares of University-owned land to the City of Burnaby to form part of the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. In return, the city approved an Official Community Plan in 1996, allowing SFU to begin developing a residential community, later named ‘UniverCity.’ The 1996 OCP envisions a dense, mixed-use community on approximately 65 hectares of land surrounding the SFU campus. It allows for up to 4,536 residential units in two distinct neighbourhoods to the south and east of SFU’s campus, each with its own elementary school and neighbourhood park. The OCP includes provisions for a commercial core, community facilities, and an extensive network of pedestrian paths and bike trails. Throughout each stage of its design and development, key stakeholders worked to ensure that the new community would be
UNIVERCITY ~ 47 one that integrates residential, commercial, and academic uses in a manner that benefits the university as well as fostering innovative solutions to sustainable community building. UniverCity is currently home to over 2,000 residents and is planned to accommodate more than 10,000 when fully built out. While most parcels will accommodate market housing, some parcels will be developed as rental, non-market and affordable staff and faculty housing projects. Additionally, there are four mixed-used parcels along University High Street that combine residential development with office and retails uses in order to meet the day-to-day needs of residents.

THE PORT MOODY ARTS CENTRE The Blackberry Gallery is a free public art gallery, operated by Port Moody Arts Centre Society and located in Port Moody’s original City Hall built in 1913. The Society, registered as a non-profit organization, is funded through the help of the City of Port Moody, the Gaming Commission and by donations received from individuals and corporations. Located on the main floor of the Port Moody Arts Centre, the Blackberry Gallery consists of four exhibition spaces: the Main Gallery, the 3D Gallery, the Plum Gallery - Walls, and the Display Case. The Gallery hosts 44 exhibitions per year, ranging from works by international and regional to local artists. This beautiful heritage building was built in 1913 as the original City Hall of Port Moody. This also marked the incorporation of Port Moody as a city. The City Hall served also as a police station, jail and fire hall. The tall western tower housing the elevator was used to dry the fire hoses and the prisoners were kept in cells in the basement where the pottery kilns are now. Perhaps it is one of these long ago prisoners that we hear walking up and down the main staircase at late night pottery firings! Another topic of speculation and debate - is there or is there not a secret tunnel under St. John’s Street to Jake’s Pub? The Arts Centre is home to galleries, a gift shop, arts classes of all kinds, volunteers and many different community arts groups. As of September 1, 1999 it is run by the non-profit Port Moody Arts Centre Society. www.pomoartscentre.ca

The forested mountainside is home to Belcarra Provincial Park with its lovely lake and network of hiking trails, as well as Buntzen Lake Recreation Area, popular for its boating, fishing and many hiking trails. Several trails are suitable for mountain bikes. Wildlife Viewing While the sheltered harbour still has some industry, freighters come and go at a seemingly relaxed pace thus making the waters save havens to sea lions lolling around on log booms, wading blue herons, eagles and geese.
56 ~ Old Town Port Moody
Heritage Tour of Port Moody The Coast Salish nation were the first inhabitants in the area that became Port Moody, likely attracted by the sheltered waterfront and forested hillsides. The Fraser River gold rush of 1858 led Col. R.C. Moody and the Royal Engineers to build a trail from the then capital of New Westminster north to Port Moody as a defense position in the event of an attack by US soldiers. The attack never happened but North Road is still a vital link between the two cities. Twenty years later, Port Moody was chosen as the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The port enjoyed this notoriety for two years, until a new terminus was found at Granville, now Vancouver. This tour will let you explore the beginnings of the railway and indulge in the rich heritage, which abounds in Port Moody. Begin your tour at the Port Moody Station Museum. Built in 1905, it was the second railway station in the area. www.cityofportmoody.com

PORT COQUITLAM
Coquitlam Means “Salmon” The City of Port Coquitlam was incorporated as a municipality in 1913 and City Hall constructed in 1914. Since that time the City has seen significant growth with a population now exceeding 57,000. Port Coquitlam is bounded on the south by the Fraser River, on the east by the Pitt River, west by the Coquitlam River and by the Coast Mountains to the north. Before the arrival of the early white settlers around the 1860’s, the area now known as Port Coquitlam was a First Nations village at the mouth of the Coquitlam River. Coquitlam is an aboriginal word meaning “salmon,” and the Coquitlam River was famous for its hordes of the Pacific Coast fish.

PORT COQUITLAM ~ 67 The Giggle Dam has been enthralling audiences since 2001 with outrageous musical skit comedy. Reminiscent of Second City Review, the immensely talented performers of the Giggle Dam Dinner Theatre offer lively rapid-fire comedy skits, musical parodies, impersonations, etc. The politically incorrect offerings of the “Dam” cast is catching fire quickly. Along with the hilarious politically incorrect nature of their comedy, the unique twist is the casts interaction with the audience; unparalleled in any live theatre setting in the Lower Mainland. Everyone in the audience is met personally. Every name is remembered and those who show a desire to get in on the fun could be “singled out,” or even invited on stage to participate in a skit! It’s the perfect way to embarrass your annoying brother-in-law, or to get back at your boss for those extra projects he’s been piling on your desk! Before all the insanity gets under way, the audience sits down to an outstanding 4-course dinner, during which the cast offers up some crazy impromptu performances and sets the mood for the evening. www.giggledam.com

Museum
The Museum is located in the old General Store building on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. The main part of the building dates back to 1885 and was moved from its original location near Herring Road to its present site in 1908. The building housed Pitt Meadows’ first post office (in use to 1944) and one of its earliest stores (in use until 1931). After 1931 the building was used primarily as a residence and received municipal heritage status in 1989. By the mid 1990s the building was vacant and had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was purchased in 1997 by the City of Pitt Meadows, and, after eight months of restoration, the Pitt Meadows Heritage & Museum Society became its new tenant. Artifacts relating to the pioneer and agricultural history of the community are located on the first floor of the Museum with offices, work and storage areas, and a small community archives located on the upper floor. www.pittmeadows.bc.ca

Memorial Peace Park Bandstand The Maple Ridge Concert Band presented the Bandstand as a gift to the people of Maple Ridge on May 7, 1994. George Price offered his considerable talents for fund-raising and on-site construction began in March, 1994 taking a remarkably short 8-1/2 weeks to complete. This included ordering the decorative columns from Oregon, letting the contracts for the structural steel work, renting a large warehouse for the assembly of the acoustically-engineered ceiling (the acoustic design was completed by the same firm that designed the acoustics for the Orpheum Theatre), painting the decorative railings and ironwork, painting the ceiling panels, and countless meetings with the general contractor. In the end, the final costs of the project (including donated materials) amounted to $192,000. This did not include more than 1,300 hours of volunteer time (176 person-days) and the value of the land donated by the Municipality. The Provincial Government donated a grant in the amount of $50,650. Today the Bandstand is used for movie shoots, weddings, musical performances as well as many other special events. The Bandstand was designed by architect/engineer Tom Walker, a resident of Maple Ridge and long time musician/trombone player.

80 ~ Golden Ears Bridge
Golden Ears Bridge The Golden Ears Bridge links Langley and Surrey on the south side of the Fraser river with the north side communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The official launch of construction was June 27, 2006 and the bridge opened in the summer of 2009. The new bridge will provide quicker travel times for motorists and truckers. It will also promote business activity, investment and job creation in the host communities and beyond. The Golden Crossing Constructors Joint Venture recognizes the importance of the Golden Ears Bridge project to people in this region, and so we have adopted design themes that pay tribute to local history and geography. The Golden Ears peaks look down on the bridge from the north. There are several explanations for the origin of the term “Golden Ears.” By one local account, “Golden Ears” is a modification of “Golden Aeries,” referring to the nests of the eagles that thrive on Canada’s Pacific coast. The eagle has been chosen as a symbol for the bridge, and will be displayed on project signs and on the bridge towers. The design theme also recognizes First Nations and their relationship to the land through the inclusion of “fish trap” fences and specially designed lanterns along the roadway. The planting of native trees, shrubs and grasses will build a sense of harmony along the corridor and help to integrate the facility within the region. Located at all pedestrian entrances to the Golden Ears Bridge is a series of interpretative panels.

Fort Langley is the exact location where, a century and a half ago, a huge fur trade organization called the Hudson’s Bay Company established a small post to trade with the First Nations of the West Coast. The enterprise grew, evolved, and influenced history, leading to the creation of the colony of British Columbia. Furs were shipped to Europe via Cape Horn, produce was traded to the Russians in Alaska, local cranberries found their way to California, and Fraser River salmon was enjoyed as far away as Hawaii! In 1858, rumours of gold on the Fraser River caused a massive influx of

Americans to the area. Fearing annexation by the United States, British Columbia was proclaimed a Crown Colony on this site by James Douglas on November 19, 1858. The Hudson’s Bay Company established the original Fort Langley in 1827. It served as part of a network of fur trade forts operating in the New Caledonia and Columbia Districts (now British Columbia and northern Washington). The fort maintained a good and peaceful trade in furs, salmon, and even cranberries with the local native inhabitants. Because of its strategic position on the Fraser River the post developed into a regional depot and forwarding centre. Photos:www.pc.qc.ca/fortlangley

“charming abundance of clover” Cloverdale, a historical gem in Surrey, has a rich heritage. The name Cloverdale was first inspired by William Shannon, one of the first settlers to the region. Named for the charming abundance of clover that blanketed the area, Mr. Shannon decided to register the name “Clover Valley” in Victoria so postal facilities could be made available for the area. In 1945 Jack Shannon and Clarke Greenaway established the first rodeo in Cloverdale. Their message: “The West Goes Wilder.” Thus started a tradition that is still celebrated today. The annual Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition has has grown to become the second largest professional rodeo in Canada, drawing spectators from all over North America. The rodeo remains part of the legacy of Cloverdale’s unique western heritage. This use to be the Antiques Capital of BC but only a couple remain. RIGHT: Surrey Archives

CRESCENT BEACH
Named After The Curve In The Bay Early on the area was named Blackie’s Spit after Walter Blackie. The ladies of the community could not see this vulgar name on a railway station. It reminded them of the cuspidors commonly in use in those days. It is said that an eminent politician coming in by sea remarked that the spit looked like a crescent and so the name stuck. 1912 was considered the boom year for Crescent Beach. This was due to local construction and promotion of the resort by the Crescent Beach Development Company. In addition to a boat house and twelve homes, the Crescent Hotel, and a pier were constructed. The Crescent Beach Hotel and its associated wharf, was the center for summer activities in Crescent Beach. It was located on the present site of Beecher Place, the current public washrooms, police office, and meeting hall at the foot of Beecher Street. The Crescent Station in 1909 was a simple shelter. However, with the development of the beach community it warranted a full station. Children, their mothers or their chaperons would arrive at Crescent Station and walk to Camp Alexandra. Even the Crescent Beach Hotel was closed every winter, with 1919-20 being the first winter it was kept open. However, a large enough permanent population existed to warrant the opening of a school in 1912. (All Photos: Courtesy Surrey Archives in Cloverdale )

104 ~ Primarily A Summer Resort!
Crescent Beach was largely built along the beach berm spreading out from Beecher Street. Crescent Beach was primarily a summer resort. In the 1920’s people could access Crescent via the Great Northern Railway. The sun, sand and swimming lessons provided by the Swimming Association drew many summer visitors. Blackie’s spit is seen in the background below. The summer resident influx never failed despite local economic conditions. 1929 in particular saw a number of improvements. Captain Cates remodelled the Hotel and gave it an improved appearance and functionality. www.crescentbeach.bc.ca

FLEETWOOD
Named After A Hero Of WWI What was to become the Fleetwood district was a heavily wooded area around the junction of Yale Road (Fraser Highway) and Pike Road (160th Street). Yale Road was opened in 1875 as a through route from Yale in the upper valley to New Westminster. Most early settlers preferred the lowlands of the Serpentine or Nicomekl rivers as the land was fertile and easy to clear. The uplands on the other hand were heavily timbered and difficult to clear. Only a few hardy settlers took up the challenge of settling in the Fleetwood area. This was the preferred area for loggers. In 1907 James and Edith Francis homesteaded on land in the vicinity of Yale Road and Pike Road. (Francis Road is 159th Street). RIGHT: Bronze of Tom Fleetwood

108 ~ Northview Golf & Country Club A few years later on, other members of Edith’s immediate family, the Fleetwoods, joined them. When World War I was declared many immigrants from England, like the Fleetwoods, felt honour bound to support their former home and country. Many enlisted to see action overseas. Edith’s brother, Arthur Thomas (Tom) Fleetwood, joined the 46th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in August 1915. He was shipped over to France and in September 1917 he died from his battle wounds. Edith was so upset with the loss of her brother and felt the need to honour him. She applied to the Provincial Government for a charter to name her community in rememberance of Tom. The depression years of the 1930s saw many people come out to Fleetwood as land was relatively inexpensive and access was good. War time saw a significant population growth in the Fleetwood area as housing shortages in Vancouver and New Westminster forced people to look for housing in the Fraser Valley. The 1990s brought Fleetwood more amenities and recreational facilities. Fleetwood Park received a half million dollars in improvements, with the addition of a new washroom facility, water park, basketball/hockey court, and playground equipment.

12TH STREET
Long Been A Community On Its Own 12th Street has long been a community of its own: one that grew along this early road connection kept busy by the major crossroads of 6th and 8th Avenue. A streetcar line once ran up and down the 12th Street hill, providing easy transportation into New Westminster, drawing visitors to the Metro Theatre that once served as the focal point of the community. Today, ‘eclectic’ is the word to describe New Westminster’s 12th Street neighbourhood. With newly widened sidewalks and quaint, eco-friendly street lamps this is a walkable community sprinkled with ethnic eateries, groceries, second-hand shops and a must-see technology company. QUEENSBOROUGH
A Visit To Queensborough Landing Queensborough has a colourful past unlike other neighbourhoods in the Royal City. Here people from many different cultures lived and worked together seeking employment at local sawmills, canneries, shipyards and farms. To this day Queensborough, which is set apart from the main city by the North Arm of the Fraser River, continues to have a wonderful multicultural flavour. Today Queensborough Landing is the centre of New Westminster’s island suburb. Filled with restaurants, outlet stores and a newly opened 5-star casino, Queensborough is a shopaholic’s dream. When visiting the Landing, drop in at Mexx, La Senza, Guess, Aldo, Tommy Hilfiger, Le Chateau and Espirit for fashion, Best Buy for electronics, and Home Outfitters and Walmart for your home needs. Fuel up with a late lunch or dinner at the newly opened Boston Pizza: try their Stromboli sandwiches, they are amazing. Other local restaurants include Tora Sushi, Taco Del Mar, Starbucks, Tim Horton’s and Opa! Greek restaurant. Take a break from the afternoon of shopping and take a walk along the Fraser River. Enjoy one of BC’s last ‘working rivers’ by watching tugboats zip up and down this busy bit of the mighty Fraser. What you wouldn’t expect in this community are quaint neighbourhoods tucked along the riverside. But that’s what you find if you take a trip off the beaten path. Take a jaunt down Queensborough’s main drive: Ewen Avenue. The first thing you’ll find is the Queensborough Community Centre. In addition to providing excellent programs and services, the centre is also home of the volunteer Queensborough Special Programs Committee who help coordinate a number of community events such as monthly family dinner, Queensborough Day and Queensborough’s renowned Urban Farmers Fall Fair which takes place in September.

SAPPERTON
‘Nicknamed Sappers’ The name of this neighbourhood began with the Royal Engineers (nicknamed Sappers) who camped nearby while helping build the community you see today. Today, New Westminster’s Sapperton neighbourhood has become a shopping hot spot for gifts, interiors and kids’ essentials. It has the feel of Vancouver’s Main Street district – a mix of local designers, modern home essentials complete with an organic market, fabulous bakery, gelato shop and variety of eateries. Umai Sushi (450 East Columbia) and Gino’s (431 East Columbia) are not to be missed.

It’s one of the city’s best stops for gifts and ‘home embellishments’ where you’re sure to find something you, or someone you love, can’t live without. Just down the block you will discover Dimpleskins natural baby essentials (451 East Columbia.) As a mother of two, owner Jen Casey began Dimpleskins in her home kitchen. Today the former make-up artist’s 100% natural baby products have a cult-following. The shop is conveniently located mere blocks from Royal Columbian Hospital, so pick up some “Boo Boo Goo” or “Bum Bum Balm” next time you’re visiting a new baby and mom! We are easily accessible by two local skytrain stations: Sapperton and Braid. No trip to Sapperton is complete without visiting the historic Caps’ Bicycle Shop (434A East Columbia.) Many long-time residents of New Westminster can tell you about their first bike purchased from this very store. Our store is a combination of how we love to ride. I’m a family man so I want to look after the kids and parents. Folding bikes are Marie’s passion and there is no one in Canada that knows more about folding bikes than Marie.

Burns Bog is a raised bog ecosystem covering approximately 3,000 ha of the Fraser River delta between the south arm of the Fraser River and Boundary Bay. One of the largest undeveloped urban landmasses in North America, Burns Bog is globally unique because of its chemistry, form, flora and large size. International Bog Day is in July. www.burnsbog.ca Discover the Delta Nature Reserve, located in the northeastern corner of Burns Bog, at the south end of the Alex Fraser Bridge. The 60-hectare reserve covers only 2% of the bog, and is the only part of Burns Bog that is protected. The nature reserve has three loops of boardwalks and trails. A 90-minute hike takes you past a beaver dam and through a spirea meadow and cedar grove. When a low tide drains Boundary Bay, its sandy bottom is as mottled as the moon. Little pools of seawater are trapped in sandy depressions and reflect the sky in an endless array of mirrors. Walk out and explore the expanse but be sure to keep an eye on the shoreline where you may have left your picnic basket. Point Roberts/Boundary Bay A geopolitical oddity, it is a practical exclave of the United States, located on the southernmost tip of the Tsawwassen Peninsula, south of Delta, British Columbia, Canada. Point Roberts can be reached from the rest of the United States only by traveling through Canada or crossing Boundary Bay. Lord Aberdeen, British Foreign Secretary, proposed a treaty making the 49th parallel the boundary to the sea, giving Great Britain the whole of Vancouver Island. The Treaty of Oregon was concluded on June 15, 1846. The acceptance of the 49th parallel as the international boundary was concluded without precise knowledge of the effects it would have. Later, as the Boundary Commission was surveying the line, the British government realized that the peninsula of Point Roberts would be an isolated part of the United States. The British Foreign Office instructed Captain James Prevost, the British Boundary Commissioner, to inform his American counterpart of the situation and request that Point Roberts be left to Britain, because of the great inconvenience it would be to the United States. If the American Boundary Commission was reluctant, Prevost was instructed to offer “some equivalent compensation by a slight alteration of the Line of Boundary on the Mainland.” It is not known how the American commissioner responded, but Point Roberts remained part of the United States. Many of the area’s businesses are geared toward weekend and recreational visitors from Metro Vancouver, especially those in search of cheaper gasoline. The handful of area bars and nightclubs are popular with visiting Canadians despite a drinking age of 21 in the state of Washington versus that of 19 in British Columbia (or perhaps even because of it - establishments south of the border tend to be attractive to mature patrons), although this popularity diminished somewhat after
148 ~ Atlantis Day Spa Sunday drinking was legalized in British Columbia. The local post office rents hundreds of post office boxes to individuals and businesses from the Metro Vancouver area (including the US Consulate in Vancouver) which find it a convenient and fast way to receive mail and parcels from the United States without paying for cross-border shipping costs. As reported in the August 2004 National Geographic Magazine, residents enjoy a low crime rate at the cost of a high local security presence. Due to having to go through the international border twice to get to the rest of the USA some have called it “the best gated community in the U.S. The article also says that students older than the third grade must commute to schools in mainland Washington. There is no hospital, doctor, dentist, pharmacist or vet; and because American health insurers will not pay for treatment given by Canadian providers, Point Roberts citizens usually seek medical care in Bellingham, Washington, even though Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is closer. This includes even emergency patients.

No longer passable for boats, today they are still clean and fresh enough to allow fishing. Be sure and visit the Ladner Village Fair in the summer as well as the outdoor market held on Sundays throughout the summer. Ladner was created as a fishing village on the banks of the Fraser River. It is a part of the Municipality of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, and a suburb of Vancouver. Named for one of the founding families, it developed as a center for farming and fishing. The ferry at Captain’s Cove allowed for access across the river to Richmond, British Columbia. The George Massey Tunnel provided a permanent connection in 1959. Paired together with its suburban neighbour to the south, Tsawwassen, these two communities make up the unofficial region known as “South Delta.” The Upstart Crow is a unique store located in the heart of the historic Ladner Village. The Crow has been celebrating and encouraging artistic expression within our community since 2004. At the front of our shop local artists are featured on our in store gallery wall and BC artisan giftware fill our shelves. Our products range from incredible pottery, gorgeous silver and gemstone jewelry, organic lotions, soaps and soy-based candles to seasonal home decor items. LADNER ~ 157 Each spring Ladner hosts the Ladner Pioneer May Days (commonly referred to by residents simply as May Days), the longest-running festival in Delta, which is held on the weekend following the holiday commemorating Queen Victoria’s birthday. It includes a parade, a carnival, and other local events. Every other Sunday during the summer months the major streets in the village are reserved for Ladner Village Market, a farmer’s market featuring live music, food, entertainment, fresh local produce and homemade arts and crafts. Vendors from as far away as Kelowna and Vancouver Island, along with many local farmers and artisans, set up stalls selling hand-crafted and locally grown products. This market has become a major draw to the community, attracting a few thousand out-of-town visitors each market day.

Aunt Grace’s House on River Road When asked the other day what were the best times of my youth I answered, “The days we spent at Aunt Grace’s house on River Road in Ladner.” From 1953 through 1960 we spent every weekend at our country cousins’ house in Ladner. I was ten in 1959. Mom and Dad would bundle me and my brother up and put us into the family Ford and head off over the Fraser Street Bridge for the weekend to stay with Aunt Grace and Uncle Bud and our three cousins Carol, Donna and Ron in the country. I learned a lot at Aunt Grace’s house and as a city boy there seemed to be no end to the wonderful and exciting things to do. There was a genuine warmth in their house. I knew other people felt the warmth as well, for there was always an endless stream of interesting people dropping by unannounced when ever the spirit moved them. There was ‘Harry the pea truck driver,’ who used to take us for rides in his pea truck, ‘long tall Tom’ from up the road and a bevy of fishermen and farmers who lived in the area and worked with my uncle from time to time. The house itself added a lot to the warmth and the charm that we felt. It was two story’s high and had a pantry in the kitchen and a veranda on both the front and the back, with swinging screen doors. There was an old pot belly stove in the kitchen that when ever anyone entered through the back door, they were greeted with the aroma of fresh burning cedar wood and the crackle of a warm fire. When we arrived, we would often find my uncle sitting at a table in the kitchen rolling cigarettes and my aunt in the pantry baking cookies or preparing a mid day meal
160 ~ River Road for my uncle, who worked shift work. A doorway led from the kitchen into a family room. In the family room there was an old wood burning stove in the middle of the room. The stove had a brown Formica window that danced miraculously whenever there was a fire inside. In this room we often played pick-up sticks or tinker toys with my cousins while the grown-ups played cards in the kitchen. The room beyond the family room was called the living room. It was not used very much and in the colder weather my uncle would nail plastic sheets over the windows to keep out the cold. On the remainder of the first floor there was a staircase that led up to the second floor and a hallway that ran parallel to the living room. There was an old painted banister on the staircase that we kids always used to take turns sliding down whenever we didn’t get caught. Upstairs were the bedrooms. I recall my older cousin Carol’s room the most vividly. There was a kidney shaped dresser in her room with curtain material pinned around it which hung to the floor so you couldn’t see its legs and on the walls were pictures of rock and roll stars of the day, cut from magazines. Carol was six years older than Donna and I and Donna and I were the same age. I was not into rock and roll music at age ten, so I did not know the names of the stars in the pictures but I do now, there was Fabian, Fats Waller, Bobby Rydall, the Everly Brothers and Elvis. There were probably a lot more but those are all I can recall. Aunt Grace’s room was big. It had a large bed with a big downy comforter that we used to get lost in when night time fell. The house was situated between two fields and another field lay behind. All the fields were separated by a ten foot high hedge of wild blackberry bushes. At least at the time they seemed to be ten feet high, of course I was only four feet high and everything seemed big. I remember the blackberry bushes used to have the biggest, juiciest berries I have ever tasted. We would take a tin milk pail with us, used for bringing milk back from the dairy farm next door and fill the pail up to the brim with fresh blackberries. Aunt Grace would make pies out of the blackberries; with our help of course. My cousin Donna had a baking set consisting largely of different shaped cookie cutters and we would take the left over dough from the pie and make cookies. We would sprinkle them with cinnamon and sugar, just as my aunt would do! (Continued in our next issue)

George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary We are the Winter home of the Lesser Snow Goose and one of Canada’s top bird-watching sites in the heart of the Fraser River estuary, one hour’s drive from the City of Vancouver, British Columbia. We are situated on Westham Island, just west of the community of Ladner in the Municipality of Delta. It consists of nearly 300 hectares (850 acres) of managed wetlands, natural marshes and low dikes in the heart of the Fraser River Estuary. For the millions of birds seeking feeding and resting areas during their annual migrations along the Pacific Coast, the Sanctuary is ideally located. It is a place where wildlife and their habitats are protected from harm, and it lies next to miles of flat marshland and the farmland of Westham Island. Washrooms and picnic facilities are all located next to the parking lot. The dikes serve as walkways and are wheelchair accessible. A two-storey (10 m high) observation tower is located in the northwestern corner and provides an excellent view of the shallow ponds, the intertidal marshes of the Fraser River estuary outside the dikes, the ocean (Strait of Georgia) and landmarks in the Vancouver area. Another viewing area with wheelchair access is only 15 minutes walk from the entrance gate, and overlooks the marshy islands and ponds of the south half of the Sanctuary. 604 946 6980

STEVESTON VILLAGE
Old Cannery Town Steveston, now an active as well as a historic fishing village sits at the southwest corner of Richmond and is one of the oldest settlements and commercial (canneries) areas in the province (though much of it is in ruins or gone forever except in archival images). Two attractions celebrate Steveston’s fishing past. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Museum and Britannia Shipyards are National Historical Sites. Between the village, its docks and the actual southwest tip of land is the delightful windswept Garry Point Park. The breeze off the Strait of Georgia is constant (great for flying kites). The terrain is flat and sandy (watch your lenses can get scratched) with lots of wildflowers, marsh grasses. Stroll along the main street or take a walk to the wharf area to purchase fresh fish off the boats in summer.

The most common complaints are neck and shoulder pain or whiplash. Majority of the time, in healthy individuals, you will see results in just one acupuncture session. The muscles will relax, start to heal and the pain will be gone. If you have an acupuncture treatment a day or two after the accident your chances of healing quickly We are a centre that is a compass point for the community. (1-2 treatments) are very high, if you wait for more than 2 weeks you are looking at 4-10 treatments. Why does acupuncture work so well after a MVA? Because muscle pain from a MVA is at a superficial level, it hasn’t had a chance to move to a deeper level in the body therefore acupuncture can get the blockage causing the pain out. www.turningpointwellness. com

STEVESTON ~ 177
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site of Canada located in Steveston village. Built in 1894, the Cannery echoes the days when it was the leading producer of canned salmon in B.C. Today it is a fishing museum with interactive exhibits, film, and tours that demonstrate the Cannery’s important role in the history of BC’s West Coast. Along the banks of the Lower Fraser River in the boomtown of Steveston, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery opened its doors for business in 1894. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was the largest cannery in British Columbia until 1902. It was known as the “Monster Cannery” - packing more than 2.5 million cans of salmon in 1897! That was during the free-for-all days of the salmon canning industry and soon the “Monster Cannery” boasted hundreds of workers producing these cans of salmon. Each canning season brought together a diverse mix of workers, usually of First Nations, Chinese, Japanese and European descent. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was representative of an industry that was one of the province’s largest employers and whose work force laboriously churned out one of the province’s principal export commodities. With the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe, the Cannery was revitalized by an onslaught of new capital and expansion of anticipation of a new enterprise, namely herring. New machinery and an army of workers produced case after case of canned herring in tomato sauce, the major source of protein for Allied soldiers and civilians struggling overseas during the war. The end of the war meant the end of a market and the end of herring canning in British Columbia. For the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, herring reduction would become the predominant activity by the late 1940s. www.gulfofgeorgiacannery.com

178 ~ London Heritage Farm
London Heritage Farm London Heritage Farm is a 4.06 acre historical site that overlooks the south arm of the Fraser River. The site offers a 1880’s farmhouse in a park-like setting with lovely heritage and herb gardens, the restored Spragg family barn, old farming equipment, a small hand tool museum, chickens, bees, allotments and large lawns as well as picnic tables and public washrooms. The London farmhouse has been fully restored and furnished to reflect life in Richmond during the 1880 to 1930 era. Six rooms display the furniture, pictures, clothing, quilts and everyday articles of the era and the many London family photographs that hang throughout the house give you a glimpse into their history as one of the pioneer farming families of Richmond. It’s highly likely that you will also see something that reminds you of your family history too. London Heritage Farm is owned by the City of Richmond and operated by the London Heritage Farm Society. Operations and improvements to the house are financed through donations, the operation of the tea room, gift shop and special events held by the Society. Charles Edwin London, aged 16, and his brother William, aged 17, arrived in British Columbia from Ontario in 1877. Three years later, the brothers purchased 200 acres of land for $2000, erected a small farmhouse and began clearing and draining the land in preparation for farming. In 1888, Charles married Henrietta Dalzeil of Dalbeattie, Scotland, and started building the farmhouse that still stands today. Charles and Henrietta London had eight children, of whom three died in infancy as was common in those days. Henrietta died in 1916 and the family stayed at London Farm only another three years before selling up and moving to the Marpole area of Vancouver. www.londonheritagefarm.ca 604-271-5220, 6511 Dyke Road

Portions of the airport branch are at-grade in order to accommodate a future elevated taxiway for aircraft over the line. In addition, segments of the Richmond and Airport branches are single tracked instead of double tracked to cut project costs and to appease Richmond City Council, which considered the overhead line an eyesore and had been fighting for an at-grade line. Richmond Olympic Oval The Richmond Olympic Oval, or the Richmond Oval is a facility in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. It was used as the venue of the speed skating events of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The cost of the project is currently estimated at $178 million. It has been built on a site beside the Fraser River, a few blocks away from Lansdowne Station on the Canada Line. From the air, the roof takes the stylized native shape of a heron’s wing, a tribute to the Salish First Nation and the large wading bird that cohabited the riverbank at first European contact 230 years ago. It covers 33,000 m² of space, including a 20,000 m² main floor that includes a 400 m refrigerated track. It can accommodate 8,000 spectators. A distinctive feature of the Richmond Oval is its unique “wood wave” roof. This roof, which is one of the longest clear spans in North America, includes one million board feet of B.C. pine-beetle kill wood linked together in undulating sections to create a beautifully rippled effect. These one of a kind wood panels were designed by structural engineers Fast + Epp and constructed at the design build firm StructureCraft Builders Inc. in Delta, B.C. The remainder of the building structure was designed by structural engineers Glotman.Simpson Consulting Engineers (www.glotmansimpson.com). Some items of interest included the design for a flat ice surface and the architectural piers used to support the roof structure. The oval has been converted to a multi-use sport facility that includes two Olympic-sized ice rinks, up to eight hardwood ball-sport courts, a gymnasium, a 200 m track and a rubberized turf area. www.richmondoval.ca

Vancouver International Airport YVR The Gateway To The Olympics, YVR is a community of its own. Located on Sea Island in Richmond YVR boasts a Fairmont Hotel on site, many boutiques and eating venues and throughout the airport you’ll find wonderful Native American art reflecting the Musqueam culture and people. The collection’s centerpiece, a 3½-meter high, 4,900-kilogram sculpture by Bill Reid titled The Spirit of Haida Gwaii—the Jade Canoe, sits in the center of the departure level of the International Terminal. Behind Reid’s masterpiece is the Great Wave Wall, a glass installation by Lutz Hauschild that was inspired by the Great Wave of Kanagawa by the artist Hokusai. Most shops are located in the International and Domestic Departures areas. Duty-free shopping is available in the International Terminal, with one outlet also available in the Domestic Departures area. The domestic area has under gone a face lift in recent years and is magnificent. The new Canada Line which opened for the Winter Olympics in February 2010, transports passengers from downtown Vancouver directly to the airport, stopping at several Richmond locations along the way. A tourist attraction and a community all in one, be sure not to miss YVR and pay them a visit in person. www.yvr.ca

Bridgeport Station (TransLink) Bridgeport Station is located near the intersection of River Road and Great Canadian Way—north of Bridgeport Road and in the same general area as the River Rock Casino—and is the northernmost SkyTrain station in Richmond. The Canada Line splits just southwest of Bridgeport Station, with the main line continuing southward through Richmond to its terminus at Richmond– Brighouse Station. A branch line heads westward across Sea Island to YVR–Airport Station at the Vancouver International Airport. Passengers traveling between Richmond and Sea Island must transfer at Bridgeport to complete their journey. The station also serves as the new terminus for express buses from Delta and White Rock; in the past, these buses continued to Downtown Vancouver.

Located between Shell Road and Van Horne Way this 1.5 km trial travels through residential and industrial areas.
