Descendents - "Hypercaffium Spazzinate" (Punk/Rock) By Dustin Griffin - 4/5 Dragons

I feel I should start this review by saying that I can almost guarantee that I am a bigger Descendents fan than you are, whoever you are. I have the "Milo Goes To College" album cover tattoo'd on my wrist; I have all their albums in CD and vinyl; I travelled to Las Vegas solely to see their first appearance at Punk Rock Bowling; and my son's name is, in fact, Milo. The list ends there, just this side of creepy. So when the announcement for 'Hypercaffium Spazzinate was made, to say that I anticipated the release of this album would be a gross understatement.
Twelve years is a long time to wait for a new album from one of your all time favorite bands. It puts a lot of pressure, perhaps unfairly, on the record to be one of the greatest things you've ever heard. And after listening to 'Hypercaffium' from front to back four times, I can say that it's dependably awesome, but perhaps not world renewing as I was hoping it would be. But that's probably more my problem than it is the bands. The album kicks off with one of its best tunes. The hyper, heavy minute long 'Feel This'. Stephen Egerton's long missed guitar slicing through the air, followed shortly by Karl Alvarez's delicious bass walk and Bill Stevenson's solid drum pummelage (see what I did there?). It's a great way to start off a Descendents album. Then Milo's voice comes in and sounds as rough hewed and energetic as we were all hoping it would. Does it sound as youthful and pissed off as it did on 'Everything Sucks' back in '96? No. The dude's 53 years old. The difference between being 33 and 53 is a sizeable one when it comes to singing. But it's undeniably Milo. And that's all I asked. `Victim of Me' follows, the album's first single, and it's fun and very Descendents-ish. Not hugely memorable perhaps, but catchy and heartfelt in all the right places. 'On Paper' is a fun, snarky little number. Typically (for this band) self deprecating and geeky. 'Shameless Halo' is a cheesy love tune. Very poppy, maybe the poppiest tune on the album. But fast. Bill Stevenson's drums on this song are particularly restless and fun. `No Fat Burger' is another one of my favorite tunes on the album. A sequel to Like Food', this song hilariously speaks of the aftermath of a diet filled with heavy red meat consumption and too many greasy fries. Oh the joys of ageing. `Testosterone' speaks out against masochism in the way that previous albums have. It's an angry song. Muscle bound woman haters take note, this one's for you. `Without Love' is another love song. Very similar to 'One More Day' from "Cool To Be You" or 'We' from "Everything Sucks". A sweet, catchy punk song. `We Got Defeat' is another quick blast of punk fury. 'Smile' is another catchy love song. 08 VandalaMagazine.Com - August 2016
Album Remiew 'Limiter' sounds the most like something that could have come off of "Milo Goes To College". They even mention the almighty tenants of ALL on this song. Now to be completely honest here, and as their biggest fan, I feel I must be, the last half dozen songs on the album are not as memorable as the first ten. They're still good songs, but more skippable than the rest. Still 'Full Circle' is great and album closer 'Beyond The Music' is a nice statement of why the band is still a thing after all these years. It's also a tribute to their love of music, both playing it and listening to it. A nice amalgamation of 'Thank You' from "Everything Sucks" and an update of 'Descendents' from "I Don't Want To Grow Up". I still love this band and this is a great album. It's a healthy sixteen songs (the deluxe version is twenty one) and even with five of those being around or under a minute long, it could probably still have been a couple songs shorter. But after twelve years, I'm not going to make bones about having too many songs on a Descendents album. It's not one of their best albums; it's not one of their worst. It is, wholly and truly, Descendents. And for a band that could be here today, gone tomorrow, it's hard to ask for more than that. www.descendents.tumblr.com
Wye Oak - Tween (Indie Rock) By Michael Smith - 4.5/5 Dragons This is not the Wye Oak album you had been expecting, but it is the one you wanted. Overflowing with cascading symbol crashes, epic fuzz waves, and just all together jaw dropping. It s hard to not be awed at the jump in song writing mood creation and change in attitude. A beautiful fusion of feedback emotion, power, bits of bottled of sadness, and throw in some very smooth modern R&D bass lines. Imagine that friend or acquaintance) you know and always liked, is nothing wrong, they're nice, carefree at times, and all together a great person. They go away for a short time, and upon their return you discover a drastic difference. They are more focused, and have clearly found themselves, taking life more seriously, and appear to be reaching their full potential. laum Reiviiew Kung Fu Vampire - Look Alive (Hip Hop/Horror) By Chad Thomas Carsten - 4/5 Dragons Kung Fu Vampire comes out of the suburb shadows to feast on the over saturated hip-hop • market by dropping another classic! Yes! Look 5110 • Alive will become a classic among underground • hip-hop heads due in part because the San Jose • native truly knows how to spit intelligent bars and not some quick half-assed alphabet rhymes that a child could easily perfect. No! Far from that! "Look Alive" is nothing but pure lyrical genius; even FT1 Einstein would be proud if he were somehow an Emcee in an alternate timeline. The word play and syllables are mind melting as if the lyrics were -"‘ soaked inside a sheet of acid with Stephen Kings entire bibliography. Listeners will be able to immediately tell upon first pressing the play button that Kung Fu Vampire poured out his entire hip-hop soul inside this record. Each lyric is pure passion at its finest. The lyrics probably drip sweat on the very same paper Kung Fu wrote the albums' lyrics on, that's how passionate the vampire is about the hip-hop art form. "Look Alive" kicks off superbly with "She is a Villain"; a track that slices the neck of haters worldwide by using clever metaphorical wordplay that pays homage to hip-hop and has Kung Fu spitting a chopper status flow that holds nothing back about his own personal life. He digs deep about his past in the first minute of the songs. Fans jaws will be dropping to the floor and breaking upon impact from the shocking lyrics of an incident that happened as a child at age seven. Seriously, he holds nothing back and that is where the applauding is due. Long time followers of Kung Fu Vampire will be extremely pleased that a sequel was made for one of the vampires most popular necrophiliac track to date "Dead Girls Don't Say No", but part two brings calls upon Majik Ninja Entertainment elite Blaze Ufa Dead Homie to make the track even more sadistic, yet catchy as hell as the same time. The two artists hold it down and shine all the way through! "Cruel" (Featuring iMayday! of Strange Music) is downright infectious! So beware of the addictive flavor inside this fetish sex anthem because it has a hook so damn catchy you'll be dreaming the lyrics everyday you go to sleep, while the beat behind "Blood Bath" will having fans raving inside their house with all their fellow neighbors joining in on the fun for a full weekend of nothing but insane partying, while getting schooled by the intense chopper delivery contained within. Above all "Look Alive" further proves that Kung Fu Vampire is keeping hip-hop alive with his originality. This album has no set boundaries and is the type of record you can play over and over again till your ears bleed out profusely in happiness. Album Remiew Johnny Richter - Schools Out (Still Laughing) (Hip Hop/Rap) By Chad Thomas Carsten - 5/5 Dragons Johnny Richter is still Laughing! More than likely due to the current haters who doubted he could keep moving forward without being a full time member of the Kottonmouth Kings or possibly to every single hater who tried shattering his dreams at the start of his hip-hop career over twenty years ago via performing sold out shows across California shortly after picking up the mic. Only Richter knows the true answer, but "School's Out (Still Laughing)" continues the Laughing Saga and strongly proves Richter still has another twenty years of climbing a continuous ladder of success underneath the mic stand. He's far from his prime, because his real prime is just slowly getting started. "Schools Out" kicks off with Richter's latest underground hater single "Insanely amazing" and it's Mr. Richter presenting what he does best and that's tearing a beat a brand new asshole by spitting razor sharp bars that put's the keyboard gang banger's to their knees drowning in tears. What glorious perfection within the beat! It's a genius move to kick off a record with a song that effectively has people bobbing their heads for months on end thanks to the god sent bars meshes tremendously well within "Insanely Amazing", "Mad Cow" is another beast of a track that seems to be exclusively made to just pound in the streets and blow out nearby windows. Johnny Richter's word play is so raw inside "Mad Cow" emcees will be sent off to the slaughter houses to retire upon first listening to his ferocity. Truly raw! Give & Take lights up the positive vibes by connecting to those whom are lost in life. Johnny drops knowledgeable advice about karma and its the type of track that will leave listeners smiling ear to ear while High On Life takes Richter on an adventure through Sublime territory and ends the album flawlessly! Overall, Johnny Richter is still an incredible emcee. "Schools Out" will indeed create more loyal Richter fans that will be sticking up for him throughout the rest of his career. Ringo Starr Celebrates 76th Birthday Photos and Article By L. Paul Mann In what has become an annual tradition, Hollywood celebrated the birthday of their most famous rock and roll drummer, Ringo Starr, on July 7th. For the last several years Ringo has been joined by a group of some of Tinsel Town's most elite artists and several hundred lucky music fans, in front of the iconic Capitol records building, right beside Ringo's star on the infamous Hollywood "Walk of Fame". The event features an impromptu jam session and a live web link message of peace and love from the beloved former Beatle and his well known friends. This years festivities included three separate mini sets of music. The band Vandaveer opened with two Ringo classics, "Don't Pass Me By" and "Photograph." Led by singer-songwriter Mark Charles Heidinger, the trio delighted the crowd with their indie folk rock take on the classics. They were followed by the New York based band Alberta Cross. Fronted by English singer-guitarist Petter Ericson Stakee, the trio played "It Don't Come Easy" and "You Can't Stop Lightning." The third and final set was led by English music master Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, who along with New Zealand singer Jon Stevens and a violinist, played "With A Little Help from My Friends" and "The No No Song," with Ringo joining in at the end. Stevens wowed the crowd with his vocal prowess. The Maori descendent has had a long career in pop music dating back to the 1970's and even toured for several years as the replacement lead singer in INS, after the untimely death of Michael Hutchence. But his most recent project is performing with the Australian American super group of veteran rockers, The Dead Daises. His final duet with Ringo had the crowd singing and cheering in the mid day summer sun. The concerts were followed by a speech from Ringo inviting the crowd to send out a message of peace and love to those watching on the web, exactly at noon. But first Ringo invited his famous friends to share the stage including all the musicians that had played, as well as rocker Joe Walsh, filmmaker David Lynch, a fellow Transcendental Meditation enthusiast, actor Bud Cort of "Harold and Maude" fame, fellow British rocker Eric Burdon, keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, blues-rocker Edgar Winter, comedians Howie Mandel and Richard Lewis, Ringo's wife Barbara Bach, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, producer-songwriter Glen Ballard, veteran rock drummer Jim Feltner, Mr. Mister bassist-singer Richard Page and the All-Starr Band drummer Greg Bissonette. Walsh took the lead as cheerleader for the countdown to the universal peace message and then led a happy birthday sing along. Meanwhile, Ringo and his friends passed out free bracelets and peace sign cookies to the Starr struck crowd. Finally, a birthday cake was wheeled out and Ringo blew out the candles as the gleeful ensemble of Hollywood legends looked on. Ringo and his current band ,which includes Todd Rundgren, Richard Page of Mr. Mister, Gregg Rolle of Santana and Journey, and Warren Ham, just finished their spring and summer tour with a show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on July 2nd. But shortly after the birthday party in Hollywood, the band announced they would be adding additional dates in the fall, including a stop in Orange County, California, on October. 20th, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. Touring on their third full-length, Richmond, Virginia's Inter Arma are rising rapidly through the musical stratosphere. This latest album, Paradise Gallows, didn't come out until the day after the show but had already earned praise from all over, including unexpected sources such as NPR, which I don't have to tell you doesn't happen often for sludge metal albums. Sludge metal might be too reductive here. There are enough elements of black metal, death metal, straight-up avant-garde weirdness, and even some acoustic work that there's never just one handle for the sheer variety and complexity of what they do, carrying the listener through extreme heights and depths with a sense of dynamics unmatched by their peers. Anyhow, on to the show itself. These travelers of the spirit realm landed in Boot & Saddle, a small-ish venue/bar in South Philadelphia, which I like in spite of their rarely booking bands I care about. The fact of their getting the place well-filled is pretty damned impressive considering their last stops here were in house-venues, it was a Wednesday, and Swans were in town that very night, a band with whom they no doubt share fans. The first act to get the party started is Philly's own Strange Nights, a straightforwardly righteous act who played old-school metal/hard rock on old school guitars. They had a fun enough swagger to them that booties were shaking right away, even though said booties would ordinarily require a few bands and beers to warm them up. trio Backslider. These guys have really broken out in a big way, and deservedly so. Rather than the primitive fuzz of grind legends of yore, there's a riff-after-riff -after-riff-after-riff onslaught from these cats that pays the same amount of careful attention to heaviness in tone as slower acts like Sleep or Type 0 Negative. Touring the world together has glued them so tightly around each part that you have no choice but to feel it. They call what they do "Pain Rock" with which I won't argue because that's pretty f*cking cool. The time has come. Inter Arma takes the stage and immediately drags us to a place with the dense suffocating pressure of the bottom of the ocean, though there would later be soaring moments of transcendence. Their guitarists and bassist have the best ability to create atmosphere I've seen since Neurosis came to town, but they don't sacrifice the riffage for that one bit. There's a certain charging quality with Inter Arma that really sets them apart, in no small part thanks to their monster of a drummer. Dude did two drum solos that set and, unlike when most any other does them, every motherf*cker in the room was demonstratively stoked on both. Even a lot of what he was doing during songs was solo-level playing, both intricate and muscular. Also no slouch was their vocalist/frontman that excelled in both capacities, staring out into the crowd with an unshakable, menacing gaze. During "Violent Constellations", he got a chance to show off the low, mournful clean vocals he's debuting on this last album. There was plenty more variety throughout, sometimes causing him to rapidly vibrate his head and/or hands in order to cut up sustained notes. In a word, unpredictable. Each of the guitarists got a chance to take us elsewhere with heartfelt melodic passages, the bassist got to f*ck with us by using some kind of noise pedal. Working all together, they brought us on a memorable journey through the vast wilderness of human experience, in all its wretchedness and all its glory. Interview Coleman Hell unexpectedly took the Canadian music scene by storm within the last few years with his own brilliant original brand of electronic dance music that combines infectious hooks, which make his songs impossible not to sing along to. His singing won't leave your brain for months on end. Coleman's debut record is bound to keep his success going for years to come! If you had to choose a classic video game from your early childhood that best describes your personality, what would it be and why? Coleman Hell: Sonic The Hedgehog! Because when I'm creating things I'm meditative. It may seem like I'm staying in one place, but then when I release it into the world it's like an explosion, like sonic powering up and shooting forward. [Laughs] When the Sega Genesis was popular that's really the only time I've played video games. At what age did you write your very first song and can you remember what style the song was? Coleman lel!' Probably High School like grade 9, maybe. It was probably a rap song because I used to be a rapper. I had a keyboard in my room and I would be making these beats and I was singing and rapping on them. I can't remember the song, but yeah it was probably a rap song. [Laughs] What exactly inspires you to keep following your musical dreams? What motivates you to keep moving forward? Coleman Hell: I never have to become an adult if I continue to make this work as a profession. So that's something. It's the only thing that I really enjoy doing, truly. I have a hard time not thinking about music when I'm not writing or working on it. I have a hard time relaxing when I'm doing other things to be honest. That's really the only thing that motivates me. Whenever I cant do it that's what really bums me out/slows me down, I think. Can we dive into the real subject matter behind your hit singles "Fireproof" and "Flower Child" What inspired them? Coleman Hell: Fireproof is kind of inspired by being in a relationship where you work through everything no matter what! You stick together through thick and through thin. My parents had a relationship like that. They've been together since High School and I watched that growing up. That's what kind of love/relationship that I aspire to have in my own life. I think that's what influenced me. That song is kind of about that. Flower Child is just about my experiences playing all these festivals. I love old music a lot. I listen to things that I would hear growing up on Classic Rock radio that I love like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, I just love old music! I'm so in love with that era and I've been touring around the past year and playing all these festivals and I feel like were living in the second coming of something like that. This new generation is going through Woodstock festival culture all over again and it's exciting to me! It's kind of parallels between what your parents may have experienced going to Woodstock and what kids are experiencing now. It's similar in a lot of ways. When can fans finally expect your first full length LP? Are you able to describe the production within the release? Coleman Hell: It's going to be coming out probably at the end of August. It's sort of exploring the same sounds that are in "Two Heads" and "Fire Proof". music, which is like the music that I've been making the last few years. It's a modern take on an old rock or folk album. It's like one of those records, but made with Keyboards and stuff. That's the type of music that I was going for. Do you have a title for the album yet? Coleman Hell: It's called Summerland! Its essentially the afterlife for Witches or other Pagan religions. It's like this place that you go to in-between reincarnations. The album is really inspired by me growing up in Northern Ontario. I recorded it in a cabin with my friends. So its really inspired by nature. There's like this spiritual element running through the whole thing and it's about finding Summer Land and going there and coming back from it. That's kind of the narrative of the album. So that's what it's about. But yea, I recorded it mostly in a cabin. I rented a cabin for a month and a half and recorded everything there pretty much. I make everything on programs like Logic and Ableton with my producer LA+CH. The course of the last six to eight months we've been changing stuff production wise and adding little thing here and there, but most of it was recorded in that cabin. Any stories that you'd like to share about recording in the cabin? Coleman Hell: It really committed to the idea behind the album. We lived out there for almost two months with almost no other human contact and we started going super crazy. I had this fascination with Witchcraft and I borrowed stuff and I would have all these seances and weird things would happen when we were recording songs. Like the power would cut out and there would be all this lightning. A lot of weird spiritual things that happened while we were there. We really dived into the whole idea of the record while we were there. I think we added a little bit of magic or something to those sessions. But yea it was fun! Definitely a weird experience! But it was really cool. What's your main goal behind Summerland? What do you want to accomplish with the album? Coleman Hell: I guess just to make a record that's a classic feeling sounding record. Like I mentioned prior, the ones I loved growing up. I didn't want it to be too many songs and I wanted it to be something that you can play from start to finish. I think it's a really great album to just put on and listen to it all the way through. Like "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac; that album for example. No matter what I was into, if I was listening to rap music or whatever I was listening to I could always come back to that record. I wanted to make an album that could hopefully stand the test of time and be classic in some sort of way. I guess that's what everybody tries to do subconsciously, but that is what I was going for. Can you reveal the album art? Coleman Hell: Yes! I did a photo shoot with a friend of mine We both grew up in the same place called Thunder Bay.) and I had her follow me into the wilderness outside Toronto. And I had this bonfire with a weird sĂŠance. We stayed there all night and shot a bunch of photos with these really old cameras; she uses vintage 1930's cameras. I'm still waiting on stuff to get developed, but I think that will end up being the cover of the album, because I have to hand it in really soon! So that's going to have to be it, I think. Keeping it old school. [Laughs] You've mentioned having a lot of love for the classic rock days. If one of those artists decided to reach out to you to do an entire album; who would you want it to be? Coleman Hell: Bruce Springsteen or Stevie Nicks. Mainly Bruce Springsteen because he inspires me. He came from New Jersey. He came from a place not a lot of people do come from. He didn't really shy away from it and wrote a lot of stuff about Blue Collar Workers and growing up in a place like that. I've been in Toronto the last five years and I've left that stuff out of my music and recently I've been trying to bring it back in, because its like a unique thing that I think I should sing about, because it's part of who I am. I think that's cool that Bruce did stuff like that. So maybe do an album together that's something along those lines. Any advice to artists just starting out? Coleman Hell: If you want to pursue anything, just make sure it's what you love the most in the whole world! Don't have it hinged on success. I've just been doing what I've been doing. I didn't expect my song to become so popular. Maybe six or twelve months from now; maybe the whole world will stop caring about me and I'll be back to square one. But stop making music! I'm doing it because I love it! People happen to care doesn't mean right now and that's great. It makes it a lot more fun and gives me a lot more freedom and opportunities, but I think you just got to be willing to do it no matter what. And that's because I still am and I think that's why things are working. If it doesn't work, it doesn't matter, because you're doing it because you want to do it. Make sure you're driven by the right reasons. Coleman Hell's debut album will be released this summer and you can already hear some great singles from the album. Bayside rocks. They just do. I've been into them since the album 'The Walking Wounded'. Admittedly much later than most people get into them, but early enough in their career to appreciate the artistic forward steps they've taken, even since 2007. Since then, 'Shudder' was a solid bunch of poppy heartbreakers, 'Killing Time' was a masterpiece, 'Cult' felt like a swan song and in between they released a live album and a cover album. And with the side projects the various members undertake in the short spats of time they have off between Bayside commitments, this is a band that is ever-present and anything but lazy. Their new album 'Vacancy' does nothing the Bayside cult (that's what their diehard fans call themselves) won't love. It's hard, it's catchy, it's angry, sad and elated in dramatic swaths and fits of fury. In short, it's one of their best albums thus far. Bayside singer/guitarist/songwriter/founder Anthony Raneri wore his heart on his sleeve, in typical fashion, when he spoke with us about the band's history, the new album and the importance of longevity vs. mega popularity. This is a very energetic batch of songs. Was there anything in particular pumping you guys up this time around? Anthony• I think it's always been something that's been in our DNA. It's always been really important to us, since the beginning of the band, to be a punk band. And we're always talking about going faster and heavier. Certainly over the years, unlike a lot of punk band who have been together for a long time and start exploring different things, I think we've actually gotten more aggressive. You have. You've also kept it catchy and accessible which is a nice balance. Anthony: Yeah, being catchy and being melodic is a huge part of our sound. We kind of feel that there are certain characteristics that make us Bayside and we're always trying to explore those where we can. 'Cult' felt like the end of an era for the band in a way. A tipping of the hat to what you've accomplished thus far. Would you say 'Vacancy' is the start of a new chapter? Anthony: It's hard to say. We never really think about the band on that kind of scale. We always just write whatever's on our minds and I think that with 'Cult', with what was going on in my life, there were a lot of things ending and a lot of new things beginning. It was a very transitional time for me. So I think that just came out in the lyrics. Whereas with this album, a lot of things have ended for me, and it's very wide open as to what comes next in my life. So that's really all I could write about while we were making the record. And for a lot of the songs on this record, it doesn't have answers, whereas with past records, there has been answers or conclusions that I'm drawing. That's interesting because this album, even more so than your previous ones, feels like a concept album. Was the track listing and the order of it very premeditated this time around? Anthony: Oh yeah, absolutely. I wrote the record within the course of about four months, during which I had gotten a divorce, and had moved out of my house and was 46 VandalaMagazine.Com - August 2016
Gayer I iteriview. Amtthioroiy Rameri oflagysicle living in a little apartment while I was trying to figure out what I was going to do next. And even living in a state that I had never lived in before and now I was living in it alone. I didn't know what was going to happen, I just had no idea. So I was writing this record while trying to decide what to do with myself. And I always try to write from life experience, but it's pretty rare that I write a song about something while it's happening. This whole record was written like that, while I was in this crash pad. And the music reflects that as well. The song 'I've Been Dead All Day' is very musically emotional, with many different ideas flowing in and out of each other. Anthony! Yeah musically we always strive to be very dramatic. And I'm a big fan of show tunes and even classical music. What I love about that stuff is that they can tell a story with the melodies and with the movements. And you don't even need the lyrics to be able to feel the different emotions throughout the song. I've strived to do that since the beginning of my writing career and I just like to think that I'm getting better and better at it. But one word that gets thrown around in the studio a lot is dramatic. We want you to feel every movement and the music to dictate your mood while you're listening. Yeah, and that attention to detail is what has gained Bayside such a big and dedicated fan base. I mean your fans were calling themselves the ‘Bayside cult' before you ever were. Anthony: Yeah. So do you ever write with the fan base in mind? Songs you think they'd like to hear, or do you just write what you write and assume they'll come along with you, wherever you go. Anthony We always wanted to be the kind of band that would stick around for a long time. That was always what we had in mind. When we signed our first deal, there were bands like My Chemical Romance and Fallout Boy that were just getting enormous around us. And while we had a lot of respect for those bands, and a lot of them were our friends, we always just said that we weren't going to fall into the trap of chasing some kind of popularity. Because for every My Chemical Romance or Fallout Boy, there were a hundred bands that were chasing that and not getting anywhere. And all we ever said was we want to be like Bad Religion, or NOFX, or Social Distortion. We still want to be a band in twenty or thirty years. So we always just figured that the road to that was to be honest, and write about things that we loved or were passionate about. We never considered what other people wanted to listen to and maybe that's why we didn't get as popular as some of those other bands, but we always figured that the August 2016 - VandalaMagazine.Com 47

honesty would carry us, and it did. I like the cover of 'Vacancy'. It pops out at you. Is there any significance as to which doors are open, which are closed, etc.? Anthony: No, we just liked that image. We knew we wanted to have a hotel theme with the record. Like I said, it's about me living in a strange place and not really feeling comfortable or at home. I was in this apartment and I never unpacked or hung anything on the walls, because I didn't know if I was going to be there for a week or a month or ten years. It was in a town called Franklin, Tennessee. So I always just called that apartment the Franklin Hotel, because it felt like a hotel to me. Did you record the album in Tennessee? Anthony: Yes, we recorded it in Nashville. Your band has always been sort of synonymous with New York City. I'm not sure how many of you still live there, but does the city still influence your writing, even when you're not writing or recording there? Anthony: It influences us as people. And that certainly comes through in our music. We're very big personalities. We're pretty ambitious and bold. We just don't give a shit. I read a review once that said that we were musically arrogant. I just thought that was one of the coolest things. I've always found it somewhat unfair that you guys were always slapped with the lemo' label. I felt you fit in more with the bands you mentioned before. The Bad Religions, or the NOFX's, than with the emo/screamo crowd. Anthony: It only bothers me when I speak to people who tell me it took a long time for them to give our band a listen because they assumed it was a style that they weren't into. But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. The labels, I think the fans put a lot more stock into it than we do. We just show up and play the music. Gabriel and The Apocalypse are quickly emerging, as one of the top gothic rockers of the last five years and their upcoming album The Ghost Parade will have all the industrial culture weeping in joy from the incredible sounds impatiently waiting to be released to the world, Lindy Gabriel is already inspiring other vocalist to follow their dreams and kick down the locked doors towards success with her unique high-energy vocals that send chills through out a person's entire body as soon as they hear her voice. Which horror movie villain do you relate to the most and why? Lindy: I would have to say Pennywise from IT, because as a child I was terrified of clowns and that movie. However, as an adult I have come to be intrigued by clowns and no longer fear them but have a sympathy and understanding of them. It's truly a case of you becoming what you fear. At what age did you figure out music was your true destiny? Lindy: I was pretty young. Probably like four or five. My parents were in bands. My dad would always set up the PA for me to sing and I would dress up in my mom's performance clothes. In like fourth grade we had this assignment where we had to write a story. I asked the teacher if I could write a book full of lyrics and poetry. So I've always kind of known. I performed my first real gig at the age of eleven. American Legion was my first rock band. We kind of had a Nirvana/Hole type of grunge band. So as you see that's what I've always wanted to do. Which vocalist did you look up to the most? 52 VandalaMagazine.Com - August 2016
Lindy: I would say Kurt Cobain or Courtney Love. From the very beginning that was the biggest influence. I was about ten years old when I first discovered Nirvana. Just like the really deep lyrics within. I just really graphed onto that. So that was my first real big influence when I started writing and playing guitar/bass. And then Courtney Love; seeing a female do that was just really inspiring! Can you briefly describe the live performance of Gabriel and the Apocalypse to someone who has never seen you live before? Lindy: We're really high energy! People always comment like "Wow! You guys are crazy!" or "You know how to throw down!" I've always liked bands that put on a show and rock out! When we have a crowd I want to show them a good time! I want them to be part of the party. We just throw down and have a lot of energy. Our popularity is our live show. What type of scenario do you envision the apocalypse to be? What will set it off? Lindy: I'm in a believer in global warming. I think that is where it will probably end. The Earth will just over heat and explode. /Laughs] I don't know. Well see. But more and more animals are becoming extinct. That could play a major role too. What are you looking forward to the most touring with Wednesday 13 and One-Eyed Doll this fall? Lindy: We are thrilled! I think it's a perfect match for us! It's a perfect time for us too! It's going to be right as our record is coming out. The Ghost Parade will be released October 7th and we immediately hit the road. I'm just really excited to tap into that draw in the audience and I think that type of crowd will really dig us. Is there a deeper meaning behind the title of your upcoming album "The Ghost Parade"? Lindy: Originally I was thinking of the record and I was going with title simply called Become Ghosts. That was going to be the original title. There is a track on the record simply called "Become Ghosts". It was kind of played off of as people; how you can be so cold to somebody and then how someone can become ghosts around strangers one another or how we're distracted with technology or over-working. Not focusing on the bigger picture of what really matters. But then I started thinking about the title "Are people going to remember it?" Then I started thinking about The Ghost Parade as kind of my second idea that had a similar meaning. It was just a little bit catchier, I guess. We also have a song on the record called "The Ghost Parade" and it kinds plays off that; everyone becoming ghosts, empty, and not recognizing things/realizing things. Like the problems of the world and everyone becoming invisible to one-another. Can we discuss the album cover? Lindy: I really like concept albums where everything flows together and tells a story. This record was more challenging because there are four songs on the record that were previously

Imbermieive like @host Parade W II Be Amorag Us Scorn released on an E.P. and that E.P. is "Everything is Red", which had a concept on its own. So I had to figure out how I was going to make these four songs that already are one-pieced together and have them make sense on a full record with new songs. I had to make the story in my head and complete it as one, if that makes sense. (Laughs) I wanted to go with a more haunting look/vintage look. Kind of a loss of innocents/forgotten. I really wanted to get that feeling to come across. Like when you listen to music and you see the artwork and it all flows together and has that feeling to it. I had the idea and I worked with the artist Cody Hoffman on it (we've worked together before and he was in the band before too,) and he and I work really well together on visual art /photography. Cody completely found my vision and put it together. It was exactly what I thought in my head and what I wanted it to be. It's a ghost parade and I'm by myself with the balloons. Kinda like a lost feeling of being by myself/no one is with me and I've been forgotten; that kind of feeling. I think when you really listen to the record and see the artwork; it'll all come together. Is there anything recording wise you've always wanted to do and now finally have the chance to do on The Ghost Parade? Lindy: I think it's really cool that we've just signed a deal with Pavement and it was just
really cool that they let us do what we wanted to do for the record. We had received offers/deals before in the past, but they wanted to change our sound/mold us a certain way. We had no interest in changing. I'm definitely open minded to other people's opinions growing as an artist, absolutely, but I don't want to completely change who we are! But Pavement came and was like "We love you with how you are and we want you to make a record with how you want to make it". Pavement really understands us and our vision. It was just great to have no boundaries and really make a record with what we wanted. I think we really achieved that; that was the best thing was just doing us. We're all really pleased with the record and excited to show everyone! Are you able to shed some light on the type of production and subject matter within The
Ghost Parade? Any details on some of the song titles? Lindy: I think what people will really like with the record is how versatile we really are. You have the hard hitting in your face aggressive songs and that's like half the record, but then the other half is more keyboard and sad type of songs; like completely opposite with piano and songs that make you want to cry. There are a lot of different flavors in it for sure. I don't think you can get bored listening to it because everything is sort of different, but at the same time it all comes together. I don't like to make one sound and be predictable or be in a box. The first song is called "March of the Dolls" because the record has that ghost/doll vibe to it. Another song is called "Beauty in the Glass" and we did a video for it about a year ago and that's going to be our first single and Pavement is going to be doing a radio campaign for it. I know the video is a year old, but the whole world hasn't heard it yet. We're going to be revealing the whole entire track listing too shortly before it comes out. Where was the album primarily recorded? Lindy: We have a studio for the band at our own house that we've did a lot of the tracking
for. Also, Wally Joseph recorded at his studio. We did the vocals there. Wally really helped me grow my voice and gave me a lot of pointers. I feel like I've really grown as a singer working with him because he's such a good singer/song-writer. Sometimes we find something really good that works and don't mess with it until we send the vocals to him. I won't sing the new songs in front of the band until after I record it with Wally. I'm sort of shy and insecure and don't want to show the band what I have for it until it's more produced/more developed. What do you set out to accomplish with The Ghost Parade? Lindy: To get out there and build the fan base and do bigger tours/shows and just really show as many people as we can who we are and what we're about. We plan on touring more than ever next year for this record. Give it a shot! We have nothing to lose and we're going to give it our all! Which classic Industrial record do you hold dearest to your musical heart? Lindy: Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile" is like one of my favorite records of all time! I feel like that record with the double-disc is a masterpiece. It has a lot of emotion within it! Is Everyday Halloween for you? How do you celebrate Halloween? Lindy: Last year we had a show on Halloween and we just aniped it up with what we normally do. We had some topless dancers and clowns that were throwing out candy and balloons and stuff. We just decided to do something a little more extra special for it. When we're not playing a show I usually go and check out a Halloween show. I dress up and drink a lot Jager and have a good time! (Laughs) How important is it to stay connected with fans? Lindy: I love seeing the fans and doing meet n greets! After every time we play we try to hang out with everyone. Before playing it's sort of difficult, because I like to rest my voice as much as I can and drink some tea and kinda just chill before we go on stage. But after we play I'm just like "Hey! Come on and hang out!" and hang out the rest of the night. I actually have a lot of close friends that started out as fans that just kept on showing up at our shows and now we're really close friends. I've met a bunch of people like that. It's pretty cool! The future of Gabriel and The Apocalypse and what you want to accomplish the next five to ten years? Lindy Touring over seas would be great! Something that wouldn't be possible, but looks like it will be possible in the next few years. I think that would be a really big accomplishment. If we could just be on the level of being able to live a comfortable life through our music; that would be another great accomplishment! Their unique brand of mater madness comes through in their personalities too, making for one of my most fun interviews to date. How the hell are you guys? Chris: Doing pretty well. Ashley: A little excited. A little nervous, a little gassy. Chris: Not too nervous, we smoked some weed before. Ashley: We are pretty baked. What is your relationship with Tiger Flowers? Ashley: Well we met on Tinder and now Jesse and I are ex-boyfriends! (Laughter) Actually we played with them a few years ago at Grand Victory; it was one of our first shows as a three piece. I feel like we kind planted the seed and now they have invited us for two consecutive years to play at the Acheron. For some reason they took a liking to chabois. Jesse is a f*cking maniac. Will has been awesome in hooking us up with a bunch of people, he helped us get a little Northeast tour last year. They are releasing a new record so apparently they are going to play a lot of that stuff which is awesome. Chris: They are super f*cking talented. What is the origin of the term "Chabois"? Chris: It's pretty much a slang take on "Your boys" It's a joke. Josh: It's a joke that we have taken way too far. We obviously got it tattooed on us and made stickers and everything. Ashley: It's a fun way to refer to yourself in the third person. You can call yourself
"Chaboi" At what point did you get it as a tattoo? Chris: Last summer. Ashley: That was my first tattoo and that was last year, as opposed to Joshie here. I guess you're in it for keeps - you can't back out now... Ashley: No matter what happens chabois will be chabois. Chabois transcends Mary
Todd. At a certain point chaboi has to be real with himself. You can get pretty stupid with this stuff, especially a couple of blunts. Josh: It kind of became a habit to. You just keep saying it until you don't know you're saying it Do your girlfriends have "chagirls" tattoos? Ashley: No Chris: That's a good idea. Ashley: That would be something wouldn't it. She could get a "Chawifey" tattoo since I'm married. She's not averse to tattoos but it would be hard to get her to do it. You have a very distinct aesthetic, especially in terms of your guitar style, how did that evolve? Ashley: I don't know. I play in standard tuning which makes it a lot heavier. I'm pretty uneducated as a musician and I think it's kind of intuitive. We have certain chemistry. 60 VandalaMagazine.Com - August 2016
We aren't afraid to play whatever. I play in standard most of the time or sometimes drop 0. I feel like that makes things bouncier. I try to feel it out. The way these dudes conceptualize music is totally different from me, it's totally amazing. I also use a shitty distortion pedal. When I got it I was in the back room of a music store where you could try pedals. The guy brought me a number of pedals. None of the nice ones really appealed. So I plugged the Digitek Mtalizer in and it was super tinny and crunchy and kind of sounded like Pantera. The guy was like "You don't want this one" and I was like "Hell yeah I do." So I've been using the same one ever since. It's a lot of shitty tone and its partnered with a crazy rhythm section. Are you going for a lo-fi tone as well Chris? Chris: Not really but it comes out that way. I want to have a lot of grit and bottom end and
use two pedals. I just bought a Peavey 240 and it sounds like a beast. I think we have a very gritty sound overall - we are hoping to encapsulate that on our recording next month. Ashley It has certain crispness for it though. Mary Todd was conceived as two guys and a drum machine and then Josh came on and f*cking killed it. That's why it started out so crazy. Josh just came on and killed it. Josh: It's mostly just counting. I look like I know what I'm doing but I'm counting. I heard their crazy drum machine shit online and tried to make it human. They essentially just let me jack off behind the drum set. Chris: We never had ideas for our counterparts, We just have ideas for ourselves. Ashley: Sometimes we have a general rhythm idea, but it's usually just like "This is a crazy f*cking thing in 7, let's try it. It's an organic process. We've gotten better at transitions too. One of the hardest parts of this music is transitions. It's easy to throw together random riffs but if you can weave it together that makes it so much better. It's fun stuff, practise is always a riot. Tell me about the stuff you are recording. Josh: We are re-recording some stuff we did at the Converse Rubber Tracks. We've also been writing a few new things as well. We will probably do seven or eight songs. Ashley: It will be our first full length. I'm so excited at the process of that. Three songs we are re-recording and four or five are unrecorded newer songs that I feel represent our current sound. Josh: It represents what we play live as well. Ashley: We are coming into our own as we play. Josh: The bigger challenge in the first year was transitioning from a drum machine to actual drums. The first year the writing was a little different and now it is a lot more fluid and feels a lot more on point and in step. We'll be like "Let's make this song super fast and then have a slow breakdown part" We try to expand within ourselves but keep it in the Mary Todd dynamic. Ashley: It's cool to have blast beats but it's also nice to have more complex stuff. The newer stuff is a lot more difficult to play for us live. When I first started playing with this band I didn't think we would get to where we are musically. We are playing a song tonight that took Chris and I a moment to figure out the vocal delivery of. Ashley: It's hard to describe. We don't intellectualize it; we just do what feels right. I've always admired your sweaters Ashley, tell me about them... Ashley: My grandmother bought me most of my sweaters, my Jewish grandmother. This is some Ralph Lauren shit she bought me. I've had it for a year and I'm always busting through my elbows. My left pocket is broken on a lot of myâ–ş sweaters. It's the slob aesthetic. Josh; It's form when you try to rip the one hitter out of there. Ashley: Chaboi is usually chabaking.
