Vandala Letter,Editor/Team Can It Get Any Hotter Summer has finally arrived, and here at Vandala, we're working as hard as ever to deliver news on music events, festivals, concerts, and records releases, not to mention some amazing interviews Crystal, Bag, and I. This issue contains an interview with Gus Wood from Young Guns. We chatted about the band's recent efforts touring the states after making a jump across the pond from London. We got the inside scoop on their album Bones, and found out about his favorite wrestler of all time. Crystal Lee interviewed the very talented Rykka at the Streaming Cafe in Kelowna, and told me "This young woman was one of my favorite interviews since she was so pure and nothing else." Her latest album, Kodiak, was released on her own label; Vissen Records. They talked about traveling back and forth from Switzerland and the meaning and making of the album. Bag spoke with Emberfiled's Steve Marroitt and Nashlyn Lloyd, saying afterward "Inspired and touched by a colourful palette of life experiences, it's no mystery how Emberfield conjures up such endearing, bright and earnest songs to share with the world." There are a couple highlights this month - the site and magazine are now all clickable, baby! Secondly, Crystal Lee has the photographer's spotlight this month. As the head of photography for some time now, I've been pushing her to do this. She is absolutely incredible! She has a wide stream of experience from nature to event to bike to band promo photography. Check out her work on page 28-29, her portfolio can be seen on the Vandala site, Facebook and prints and downloads can be ordered on deviantart.com. With this, I wish you all a great July! I will be attending Mayhem Fest in Toronto, and Crystal will be in Kelowna for Keloha- see you all in the pit!

Album Reviews? Bags Picks Run the Jewels "S/T Album" (Hip Hop) Despite both, El-P and Killer Mike releasing their respectively critically acclaimed and mind blowing albums last year, they show zero signs of slowing down. In fact, they've decided to seriously team up and call themselves, Run the Jewels. Emcee / producer, El-P throws down his gritty signature, in-your-face, nasty, bone chilling beats that make you want to throw a party at a junk yard. What makes his production exceptional is the fact that the music is so undoubtedly hip hop, yet takes on a new meaning by destroying it at the same time. It's like a person that has turned into a zombie picking up another level of unrelenting attitude, with exponential power. The quick, upbeat vibe of the tracks call for a live setting, which makes sense because they are heading out on a full fledged North American tour in support of this release! These bangers are bound to pound sound systems all over the world. Both rappers shred through these dense beats effortlessly like piranhas on flesh. Complementing each other on every level, this hip hop tag team not only trades verses and hooks, but also call and respond in between without a hitch, or misstep in flow. Besides their partnership, Big Boi of Outkast makes a guest appearance on Banana Clippers reppin Atlanta with his quick, tongue twisting flows. With so much talent and ambition poured into one smoldering pot, Run the Jewels is a statement in taking the artform and progressively evolving it to new, and exciting heights. 4.5/5 Dragons Run The Jewels Online www.facebook.com/THEREALELP & www.soundcloud.com/foolsgoldrecs

Knights of the Turntables "On Road EP" (Hip Hop) Spitting raw rhymes over tough beats, Knights of the Turntables puts South coast UK on the map of underground street rap in the most visceral way. On Road EP consists of a diverse group of musicians, emcees, Shang, IC1, King Solomon, producers, King Solomon, DJ Alzee on the cuts and vocalist Gemma Anderson. Each track has a deep sense of individualism since most tracks are conceived of different permutations within this group of unique individuals. Their beats are made up of 4-8 bar loops with straight ahead boom bap drums and classical samples. The dark, minor strings, piano, and organ _ _ samples give the release a dark, sinister, almost tortured sense' a mood much like watching the Dark Knight. The track, Truth In You is a soulful display of sentimentality due to Gemma Anderson's fluttering R&B voice on the hook while Shang lists what he finds annoying about "average" rappers nowadays and how he is the antithesis of their mediocrity during the verse. "Forget a video, clothes, walking into a show, if your words mean nothing when you're dropping a flow. You can be dumb in the head, or a nuclear physicist, but it takes true passion to be a lyricist." It's true. Rappers often get-side tracked into braggadocio; showing off how much money they've got rolled up, what expensive cars they are riding and how many video girls they've got. Although all this can be appealing, it clearly lacks substance, which is what K.O.T.T brings up consistently throughout this EP. 3/5 Dragons Knights of the Turntables Online www.facebook.com/K.O.T.T.RAW & www.soundcloud.com/kott 8 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Album Reviews? Lana Nimmons Picks Queens Of The Stone Age "...Like Clockwork" (Rock) What do Sir Elton John, Trent Reznor, and Dave Grohl have in common? Like Clockwork, the latest release from Queens Of the Stone Age. Their sixth studio album, Like Clockwork was released on June 3 by Matador Records in the UK and on June 4 in the United States. Self-produced by the band, it is the first Queens of the Stone Age album to feature full contributions from bassist Michael Shuman and keyboardist and guitarist Dean Fertita, who both joined the band in 2007 to tour in support of their fifth studio album, Era Vulgaris, and recorded its bonus tracks. Dave Grohl sits on the drum stool again for the most part, providing a solid base to the band's sound — although the prominence of new bassist, Michael Shuman, should equally be underscored. Homme's guitar work is stupefying and is clearly the core of both the band and its arrangements. Still flaunting mirroring in the realm of grunge/sludge rock, the overall result is tough, yet accessible, including some deeper moments. Homme's vocal style shifts well into the slower numbers, creating a perfect drive the album as a piece. The end product is born out of some hair-raising songwriting, as ever. A number of significant others pop up to assist proceedings, including Trent Reznor, Alex Turner, Mark Lanegan and the volunteered services of a certain Sir Elton John. The point is- you need this album. I can't tell my highlights, because the entire album has been the highlight of my month of music. 5/5 Dragons Queens Of The Stone Age Online www.qotsa.com & www.facebook.com/QOTSA/info

Monster Truck "Furiosity" (Rock) Originally formed in 2009, Monster Truck broke out in 2011 when they signed with Toronto's Dine Alone Records, releasing The Brown EP. The EP blew up quick, spawning radio play and plenty of opportunities. Since then, the band has been hard at work writing all new songs for this full-length album. Canadian based rockers Monster Truck open the album with Old Train. Complete with a train rumbling along the tracks, this tune brings gang vocals, furious riffs and an absolutely infectious chorus. Track two, The Lion, sneaks up on you before jumping from the brush to rip your face off. The intensity picks up on this track and will be one that has many heads banging in unison on tour. For the Sun is a blues-infused track that shows you yet another completely different side of Monster Truck. Sounding as if Jimmy Page and the mighty Led Zeppelin wrote this one, the band takes you on a journey to their roots. The classic rock sounds that we all know and love. With it's beautiful organ ambience and slow step blues structure, the song is what I like to call slow heavy. While it never speeds up, it's ambience and vocal delivery give it a soulful, heavy sound. The guitars are really the only heavy thing about the song, but the momentum going into the chorus just feels so powerful and emotional. I have only one more thing to say about this album: don't f*ck with the truck! 4/5 Dragons www.ilovemonstertruck.com

Album Reviews Andrew Johnstones Pick's Boards of Canada "Tomorrow's Harvest" (Electronic) Although Tomorrow's Harvest is Boards of Canada's return after an eight year hiatus, their name is still held upon a pedestal in the realm of electronic music. Past releases such as Music Has the Right to Children, and The Campfire Headphase are timeless in their experimental and nostalgic nature. A standout track, Cold Earth is based around a noisy, trip hop drum beat that wisp away like birds flying overhead in a convertible car, riding through a deserted highway. The saturated found sounds and the main VHS styled synthesizer of the track gives it a cinematic feel, however it feels more like a looping scene than a drawn out plot. Utilizing noise and old film samples to create atmosphere is not new to Boards of Canada. For example, Transmisiones Ferox is a soundscape, a collage of of musically manipulated sounds, noises and textures creating not only a subtle series of notes, but also a hypnotizing rhythm. Although soundscapes like this are often done in sporadic and random ways by many artists, Boards of Canada manages to make it beautiful, and listenable. Throughout 17 tracks, they manage to churn up a diverse collection making it an adventurous and dynamic listen throughout. Tomorrow's Harvest is hard to characterize in one way. It revolves around the idea of big, vintage cinematic soundscapes, however, the production overall is very lean and pristinely accentuated with every crisp drum hit. The beauty comes from this ambiguity, and uncertainty. It's easy to lose footing within this album; let it take you. 4/5 Dragons Boards of Canada Online www.boardsofcanada.com & www.facebook.com/boardsofcanada

Bibio "Silver Wilkinson" (Electronic/Folk/Chillout) Often feeling like cinematic film scores, Bibio paints pictures with his music that are colourful, texturally rich in depth, but also melodically bright and expressive. Each song embarks on a different journey. Whether it's a drumless folk song or a dusty sample beat based neck snapper, the continuity in his vision remains strongly in tact using dense reverbs and far out echo. A standout track, Look at Orion! feels like being on a big ship in the clouds. The playful rhythmic relationship of the kick and bass gives it a sense of momentum and direction, pushing forward with every thump while the ethereal synthesizers and the female vocal chops makes it feel as though you are flying among the angels weaving in and out between clouds. The truly unique factor of this album in the context of electronic music are the sweet, nostalgic folk passages featuring an acoustic guitar in the forefront usually accompanied by Bibio's singing. These naturally organic sounding tracks such as Dye the Water Green were recorded outside in his garden onto a cassette tape, which gives it a rich, worldly texture by capturing everything around. Even the gentle touch of breeze can drastically alter a recording, and make it special since it is impossible to replicate nature in the studio. Mirroring All is a track that combines the acoustic lo-fi aesthetic with the thick beats reminiscent of label mate, Flying Lotus. Silver Wilkinson is a perfect soundtrack to waking up to a bright, sunny morning, perhaps a little hungover too. 4/5 Dragons Bibio Online www.facebook.com/mrBibio & www.mrbibio.tumblr.com 10 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Album Reviews David Khan Amon Amarth "Deceiver of the Gods" (Mete Amon Amarth has crafted a distinct sound for themselves that blends the intensity of death and thrash metal with catchy melodic hooks and an overall epic atmosphere. Deceiver of the Gods definitely continues in that vein and does not attempt to reinvent the band's sound in any sort of way. The hooks are still there along with the roaring vocals and driving drums. There's even a track with some early 80's Dougie-White style power singing complete with wide vibratos. I quite enjoyed the brief respite from guttural onslaught though I have no complaints about the vocals otherwise; just appreciating a bit of diversity. It seems like the band has exchanged their virtuosic soloing of old for a more refined and effective approach to songwriting. Gone are the extended sections of soloing in exchange for more concise lead-work and better contours to the songs. I should also note, that the production is incredible. Mixing and mastering was handled by the legendary Andy Sneap and therefore, the album is sonically very balanced with tons of punch. The guitars seem to leap out of the speakers and each chug has a 3-dimensional element to it that will mostly please those with an ear for production. Overall, this is a great album. It's not Twilight of the Thunder God but still is powerful and has a lot of good things going for it like the songwriting and huge atmosphere. Deceiver of the Gods is my favourite album that I've reviewed this year and therefore I'm going to give it a nearly-perfect. 4.7/5 Dragons Amon Amarth Online www.amonamarth.com & www.facebook.com/OfficialAmonAmarth

Battlecross "War of Will" (American Heavy Metal) Battlecross is a newer addition to the Metal Blade roster. And it's obvious why... These guys blend death and thrash metal in a very energetic way. The guitars chug and squawk through in-your-face 6L6 tube saturation as throaty vocals rip at your soul. Frantic drumming forms this basis of this modern thrash outfit for a complete sonic package. I dig this by the way. And that's coming from a guy who is EXCEPTIONALLY critical of thrash bands; especially Re-Thrash bullsh.t. But Battlecross is definitely not that. They establish themselves as a modern and refined band. The songwriting shows maturity and restraint where needed. I mean the guitars rip, but the band knows where to rip so that they don't over-saturate the listener. Excellence permeates this album especially in the melodic and tasteful solos that pop up every 3 minutes. Guitar harmonies soar over blasting drums and screeching vocals. In essence, Battlecross establishes themselves as America's response to the Gothenburg sound. Perhaps 15 years overdue, but I give them credit for their energy and talent. Though their sound is nothing new, it definitely re-enforces the pulse of modern thrash above and beyond the Re-Thrash out there. 4/5 Dragons Battlecross Online www.battlecrossmetal.cor & www.facebook.com/battlecrossmetal 12 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Album Reviews째 Eddy Levitsky's Pick Pest "The Crowning Horror" (Black Metal) Old school is the next big thing in metal it seems and more so in Sweden than anywhere else on the planet. By borrowing sounds from 60's psychedelic rock, 70's Doom and 80's New Wave of British Heavy Metal, bands like Ghost and Graveyard fast became the frontrunners in this revival taking the world by storm and creating a much appreciated break from over-produced, auto-tuned and overly-triggered albums. Five years in the making, Pest's new opus "The Crowning Horror" sees the band depart from a true Black Metal production towards a more traditional heavy metal sound in the vein of Venom, Merciful Fate and Celtic Frost - thus positioning Pest amidst their Swedish brethren in this new Traditional Heavy Metal Revival. From the dark carnivalesque opening track, it is obvious that the album yearns to be played on a vinyl with its scratchy, analog and organic production. Immediately setting up the mood, "A Face Obscured by Death" goes straight into a full-on thrash beat before expanding into a groovier, slower riff that highlights the vocal work. Even judging only by this song, it is easy to acknowledge Pest's departure from their true black metal sound still present in their previous endeavor "Rest in Morbid Darkness". The tempo is slower, the riff work more defined, the bass more present, the drumming is more traditional and the reverb on the vocals is kept to a minimum. One thing that hasn't changed though is the attitude: Necro still spits his venom through misanthropic lyrics about death, hate and evil. Most of the songs are short and sweet and, more importantly, varied. Each song stands out, making the album flow incredibly well between fast, slow, groovy and melodic songs. For example, "Volcanic Eyes" and its fast tempo, melodic-driven riff and abrupt end, is effortlessly followed by "Devil's Mark", a slower bluesy bass-driven song with a more progressive overture, rock and roll drums and New Wave overtones. One song that stands-out is the epic seven minute "Thirteen Chimes" that builds on mood rather than melody. Reminiscent of old doom metal in parts, the voice is more preaching, uncharacteristic of the album and particular to this track because of its heavy use of echo and saturation. There is a lack of solos, the leads are kept to a minimum and there is no excess of riffs - highlighting therefore the vocals and the lyrics. Even though "The Crowning Horror" is heavily rooted in old school metal, the album is not simply imitating various influences. Indeed, mixing complex song structures with catchy riffs, Pest's new album is an amalgamation of everything that is great with the old school, fueled by a modern raw attitude. The songwriting is not congested and complex yet catchy without being cheap. The songs are varied and flow with ease in a very organic fashion. Indeed, this organic approach towards the creation and production of this album is its biggest strength and quite frankly, a breath of fresh air. 4/5 Dragons Pest Online - www.pest.se

'Album Cover Of The Month Etterklang "Parades (Experimental / Progressive / Orchestral)

The colourful, and playful nature of the cover is like the sounds heard on this album by Efterklang. It's busy. There are buildings of all shapes and sizes. Nothing seems orderly, yet together as a village, it stands, and somehow works. There are all kinds of wacky orchestral instruments, voices layered and arranged in unorthodox ways, but it all comes together in a coherent, refreshing way that complement each other wonderfully. The interweaving of pathways that lead to unknown areas, new heights and lows is like the structure of the songs. There aren't any typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, etc roadmaps here. It just goes and goes, perpetually unwinding like Alice in Wonderland, ending up in strange, new places, feeling lost, but curious and intrigued. Third track, Horseback Tenors feels like an expedition through a great part of this city with the ever growing build, which explodes magnificently then quickly debris down to a low, and into the depressing, but beautiful, slow piano ballad, Mimeo. Even within such a colourful and happy looking village, there's always an escapable dark shadow just around the corner, which are literally expressed by empty, perhaps bottomless black holes in the ground representing the lowest of the low. Much like our world there are different types of people in this world on the cover as well. Each of them perhaps with their place in the social spectrum, they do look better dressed as the stairs climb higher. Both the music and art of Elfterklang's Parades evokes all kinds of thoughts and emotions within the listener. Whether it's the dizzying arrangements, the ever unwinding story, or the colourful pictures, like a good adventure film, you cannot turn it off. You'll be asking yourself, where is this going, how will this end and why do I care? Efterklang Online www.efterklang.ne & www.facebook.com/pages/Efterklang/36831868666 14 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Reviews Live _In Vancouver Kate Nash Charms Fans Review by Bag First time I witnessed Kate Nash live was at a huge European music festival. Although there were ten other stages I could have seen, I could not leave her show on the main stage. The way she connected with the audience was amazing, and personal without being shallow, or disingenuous in any way. Last time I saw her was at the Commodore. She blew everyone away with her explosive presence, but also charmed them with heartfelt, lyrical, story driven piano ballads. To my surprise, this time she came to the Electric Owl, which is an intimately sized, clean, versatile venue known to pack the house hosting some of the most notable local and touring acts regardless of genre, live band or DJ setups. Just like the smaller venues, Kate has deliberately been putting out albums that are less appealing to the mainstream masses ever since her breakthrough pop record, "Made of Bricks", which deservedly garnered a ton of commercial attention, but perhaps too much too soon. Her sophomore album, "My Best Friend is You" took a rougher tone in terms of dialing in a more rock, surf, and slightly punk edge with less pristine sheen that was on her debut, resulting in a great blend of pop rock. After listening to her latest album, Girl Talk, it was clear she had gone further in this direction with an edgier, noisier rockabilly tone. Despite the changes, I was intrigued and eager to see her again! Indie pop rock band from Portland Oregon, Dresses opened the show. They did an unplugged acoustic guitar, ukulele and dual vocal set. The guitarist played and sang effortlessly while the shy girl sang gently with a soft, polite voice and posture. Their dedicated fans front row sang along sweetly like a lullaby choir. Since the rest of the band couldn't make it, their set was quiet and subdued, putting the audience in a peaceful, dreamlike state. Kate Nash started off with a vintage style video of her in what looked like the streets of LA. The projections were on the band as well as multiple vintage, wooden TV's on stage. To promote her new album, Girl Talk, her band consisted of an all girl group. As expected this show was a lot more reckless and abrasive than before. From the song choices to the way she was dressed, it was apparent she wanted nothing to do with her past at this time. However, the most important thing was that she was still the personable, professional, and most importantly, enjoying herself. By the last song, she had lots of fans jumping up on stage, rocking out. Kate talked a lot about girl power, her teaching music to students in schools among other female empowering topics. The fact that this show was the opposite of what was most appealing about her in the beginning of her career was a little bittersweet. However, she's still the same person making quality music, just showing it in a different way. Catch Kate Nash live and grab her latest album "Girl Talk" at www.myignorantyouth.com & iww.facebook.com/katenash 16 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Reviews: Sold Out Show Groenland & We Review & Photo By Lana Nimmons On a perfect night, I was whisked away to head north up the main to the Divan Orange to see a sold-out Groenland and We Are The City. There was a line that spilled out along the main, luckily for the very patient concert goers this show was part of the Fringe Festival, and the main echoed music throughout. Like a swarm of bees, the six member band swirled around stage setting up their numerous instruments from synths, to cello, to melodica; after all instruments a crew came on stage to set up mic-lights plastered with colored gels. I Soon after the stage was vacant of musicians and roadies lights went out at The Divan Orange. Like fireflies the venue sparked on the mic-lights which reflected off of the instruments making the stage all that more magical. This Montreal-based outfit Groenland, sound is a mix of orchestral influences with electronic touches. This darling band was formed by front woman Sabrina Halde, whose voice was absolutely delightful. Her soulful voice maintained my attention throughout the entire act, and Levesque's (on synth) twisting the background music following the singer is a perfect blend which created this delicious dream sound. This expanded lineup includes tech-savvy keyboardist Jean-Vivier Levesque, drummer Jonathan Charette, bassist Simon Gosselin, cellist Gabrielle Girard-Charest and violinist Fanny C. Laurin. For a jammed-packed, sold-out show it was probably one of the nicest crowds I've ever encountered. Groanland's music, well the best way to describe it, is just happy, energetic and fun. The rowdiest moment was when they played Superhero from their EP The Chase (which is a must have), and the audience all sang their ah-ah-ah-ah-ahhhh's all in unison. They released their first LP The Chase this past April, they have been grabbing the attention of indie-pop fans, and their sound is just a fresh breath in your face. Note that I would not classify them as hipster pop rock but bohemian rock (affectation without annoying me). On a side note, I bought their album- it's amazing. Great act, I would see them over again many times over, can't wait to see what else they have in store for us. Groenland is currently on tour supporting their EP, I strongly urge you to check their listing, see them and buy "The Chase". Go Groenland! Before Groenland took the stage We Are The City graced the stage to present some incredible experimental electro indie rock. Hailing from BC, Canada, We Are The City consists of Cayne McKenzie on vocals/keys, David Menzel on guitar, and Andrew Huculiak on drums, and vocals. They are currently on tour in support of their new album release, Violent. The band was personable, engaging and earnest, on stage and off. So are their irresistible songs that frequently evoke a strong sense of place, and robust harmonies led by Cayne McKenzie countering soft synths and looped drums form this hypnotic tunes that are irresistible. Live in Vancouver

Flying Lotus, Thundercat and Teebs One Stage Review & Photo By Bag Whenever a really promising show is set to happen at the Vogue Theatre, I make sure to go early to grab the best seat in the house, which is centre balcony. As I took my seat, I quickly noticed the army of high school kids hanging out right in front of the stage. While I had no idea such youngins were into experimental, electronic beat music, it was a moment of joy that warmed my heart. While I waited, I asked the kids beside me who was opening, "Teebs, but I have no idea who that is," they responded. At this moment, my night was made. It was the kid's first concert ever, and he was about to see a killer lineup of diversity: The deep, cinematic soundscape beats of Teebs, Thundercat's wild fusion jazz band, Flying Lotus' visually and sonically awe-inspiring display of substance packaged nicely into a tight DJ set. As Teebs started twisting the knobs on his SP-404, I realized I was witnessing something special, and totally out of expectations from seeing him less than a year ago. The texturally rich and enormous atmospheric beat soundscapes filled the cavernous hall not only tickling my sense of hearing, but also the sense of touch. While the bass loosened up my body like a massage, shaking every molecule in the theatre with so much depth and feeling, the prestigious sound system projected high frequencies that would feel as though my facial follicles were being shaved off in the finest, most refreshing way. His cinematic tracks took me on a ride through the clouds and I never wanted to come back down. It was truly a memorable and moving experience. As a three piece, keyboards, drums and bass, Thundercat's band collectively played with so much feel, emotion, dynamics and skill that no one in the venue could take their eyes off for a second. The drummer was hitting so hard that his sticks basically disintegrated in his hands during the first song. He played so freely that every bar would be a different pattern, groove time signature, it was dizzying, but the band never lost their place. The most endearing part of the night was when Thundercat dedicated the song, DMT to Austin Peralta, his friend and bandmate that passed away recently. Only Flying Lotus could come out after such stellar musicians. With his 3D, double projection screens, and two tall LED bars on either sides, he kicked off the set with his Erykah Badu collaboration track, See Thru to U. Wing his way through the set coupled with the visuals was a blast to see. In addition, there were new, fresh animations and sequences along with some old ones creating some nostalgia while being super curious and intrigued at the same time. Also, he performed a bunch of Captain Murphy tracks, which is his infamous rap project. To top the night off and send good vibes to the kids, Thundercat performed Oh Sheit it's X with Flying Lotus as an encore! Battlefest Unleash the

Omega Kingdom of Scythia" Review Bag Photo By Rob Trendiak

- www.trendicreat ive.com

As I walked into the Rickshaw Theatre, nothing but a blistering guitar solo and cowbell was heard. Did I step into a time portal? No. It was time for Battlefest! Organized by Canadian epic metal band, Scythia, they put on a killer show packed with a diverse, yet stylistically focussed night of some of the hardest working bands in Western Canada. This wild guitar solo was coming from the fingers of Iron Kingdom's frontman. While clearly paying tribute to the classic NWOBHM sound, they definitely up the ante by being over the top, pushing the big hair, huge drums, and screeching high falsettos to a whole new level. Their anthemic, blood pumping songs like Voodoo Queen and Legions of Metal got the crowd head banging and chanting along.

Vancouver's aggressive progressive power metal band, Omega Crom ran a tight, but explosive ship. With crystal sharp, pulverizing guitar tone, and cutting vocals, frontman, Johnny Ketlo commanded the stage while an old, ultra dramatic, yet hilarious kung fu movie was being projected on either sides of the stage. Scythia's drummer, Celine Derval provided backing vocals. Not only did she give the set a dynamic range and edge by singing harmonies with Johnny, she also traded off parts with him, bringing a new element of soaring, female vocals to the mix. However, what made their set really work was the drummer who played in the pocket the whole time, filling in that backbeat and grooving out like a real drummer, which is refreshing to hear especially in this day and age of micro edited, processed drums. What made this event noticeably cheery and positive was Scythia interaction with the crowd, bands and their fans throughout the night. Exchanging high fives and laughs the whole time, it was evident they were nothing but organized and professional. Their presentation of Battlefest was spectacular. When it was time to step on stage, the overall vibe, positive energy and tone got turned up and bursted out of the ceiling. Cracking jokes, giving life to their folklore on stage and letting it seep out into the audience, it was no mystery how they have conjured such a dedicated fanbase coming out to support with full on battle gear. It was pretty clear that almost half of the crowd was there for one thing, and that was Unleash the Archers. As soon as they ripped into the first song, the crowd somehow doubled in size and flying hair. Sonically, their sound was enormous, the attack of their presence was so sharp and powerful it could go through any body armour. With their banners on both sides of the stage, it felt like we had arrived at the frontier, the final battle scene of Battlefest. They had to headline for this night to work. Whether it was the back and forth onslaught of blackened vocals from the guitarists, their furious solos, the low end camaraderie of kick and bass, or Brittney's charismatic performance with dense, overpowering vocals, they had undeniable chemistry. New El' 2012 Featuring "Video Game Medley" and Indie Award Nominee 2013 SiriusXm

'For The Bear" is the most concentrated burst of Scythia's unique sound which hovers between Blind Gaurdian, Elvenking and Alestorm....the best cuts are the mucous titletrack, with its insanely catchy Eastern-European chorus, and the sublime video game medley."

Bruce Turnbull, Power Play Magazine

Anyway, I really like what SCYTHIA are trying to present with this EP; their new approach seems to work way better and without doubts adds many points towards music diversity. Now, I ant really curious to listen to their new discographic step and hopefully I will get a chance to watch them live. Until then, you can definitely enjoy this one and raise your tankard high!'

As the ep progresses there is not a dud song to be seen anywhere as the lavish feel-good drink fuelled atmosphere becomes highly contagious, while your mind conjures up images of beer swilling pirate Cossacks and dancing bears. With 'For The Bear' Scythia produce the release that should have put out earlier this year."

The Clouds Kep

Metalblade Story By Lana Nimmons This past month, there was a boat load of heavy metal music emerging from Metal Blade Records. Many of these bands are four or five albums into their career. Doom metal bands The Devil's Blood and Church of Misery as well as death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder will be performing this summer's Vans Warped Tour. Later on this month, we'll get new death metal from Sweden's Amon Amarth, who climbed aboard the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival this past month. With Vans, Mayhem, and Heavy MTL in the near future, I decided to dedicate this feature of In The Clouds to Metal Blade Records, a consistent source of leading metal. For those of you that might be unfamiliar here's a little history lesson. Metal Blade Records was founded by Brian Slagel, who at the time was a record store employee in suburban Los Angeles, as a way to increase the recognition of local metal bands. The label's first release was a compilation album called The New Heavy Metal Revue presents Metal Massacre which included Metallica, Ratt, and Black 'N Blue. With Billboard topping artists including The Goo Goo Dolls, Amon Amarth, Trouble, As I Lay Dying, Behemoth, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Gwar, Job for a Cowboy, Whitechapel, and Between the Buried and Me, Metal Blade has proven over and over that they represent awesome metal and rock.

Hiddeiellasters

OF TWO 'OTHER worlds

Hidden Masters are a kick ass psychedelic rock/pop band from Glasgow, Scotland. Their track "Nobody Knows That We're Here", released a few weeks ago on Soundcloud, has been added to my permanent playlist. Although this isn't what I what would classify as metal, it is friggen addictive. They take accents from the '60s british invasion and influences from Jethro tull, with a little King Diamond thrown in. Known for their electrifying live shows, they offer the audience a one-stop intravenous blast of hedonistic joy, with carnal flailing limbs, euphoric wow-impulse neural stimulation, and unprecedented levels of perspiration. This band has captured a lost art-form, and I would highly recommend buying their album Of This And Other Worlds.

Next up hailing from Sweden is Noctum. While preparing a late 2013 release with Metal Blade, they decided to unveil their new track, Liberty in Death via Soundcloud. Heavier and darker than their previous material, Liberty in Death is a fast and powerful classic rock piece. Packed with an impressive guitar solo, Liberty in Death demonstrates that Noctum are very talented musicians who deserve all the attention they are receiving. Last but not least, I would strongly recommend checking out Metal Blade's summer sampler with the likes of Amon Amarth, The Black Dahlia Murder, Job For Cowboy, and Battlecross. It's available to download right here on Soundcloud, on CD at the Metal Blade booth on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest, as well as at The Black Dahlia Murder's booth at Vans Warped. See you in the pit, and remember, keep it heavy! Special 5 Reasons Why You Should Finish Your Damn Album By James Moore - Author of "Your Band is a Virus" Books Series Sorry for my bluntness. This is a quick point about the importance of finishing/releasing your album or EP. I often receive submissions from artists seeking promotion to music media. I'm always excited to take a close listen to new music, and sites like Soundcloud are an excellent way to preview an artist. They provide a perfect opportunity for artists to showcase their work for stream or download, but just like anything else, this shouldn't end up as an excuse to be unorganized. Think of sites like Soundcloud as your online resume. When I check into an artist and they have an endless list of songs, I'll ask them what they were looking to promote. Usually the answer I get is "Oh, I just want to generally promote myself and see what happens." The best question I get is "Can you shop this page around?" Well, not really. Here are some reasons you should set a timeline and release your damn album! 1) It will make you appear professional. Think about it. All of the artists you admire have a name, a face (or an image), possibly a logo, and they most definitely have an album or EP. Compiling your songs and representing them in a professional way shows that you care about your work enough not just to slap it on a website haphazardly, but there is actually some thought, care, and possibly meaning, put into it. In releasing an album you've decided to at least take part of the plunge necessary to bring your art to other human beings. Leaving random songs strewn across social networks and hosting sites indicates confusion and indecision, whereas the presentation of, say, an album stream (on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, etc) is professional and appealing. It tells a story. 2) It is the opposite of procrastination. It is a confident action, a footstep leading to whatever is next. If you don't take this step, no other opportunities will come your way. No videos. No special editions. No fan clubs. Nothing to sell when you play live. Many artists talk endlessly about mixing and mastering, but you can tell that they're indecisive, and that even if they finish their album they won't invest anything into the promotion of said record. There is currently an over-emphasis on production, so what you end up with is a lot of well-produced music that no one will ever hear. Focus on the passion. Quality is over-rated and the industry is over-saturated. Do something different and don't be afraid to be raw. Terrible quality? Who cares? Make it meaningful and truly charged, and let it loose to the public. 3) It removes you from esoteric thinking. It's specific. If you release an album, you now have a specific product. Just as you can't go to the store and buy "a thing", you can't really market "some songs", unless you're thinking of the publishing or licensing sides of the industry. If you never finish your album, you will never have anything to promote. 32 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Editorial Special 4) It motivates you and the people around you. We all know someone who is always "working on" a project, whether it be an album, a book, or an artistic work. At a certain point, you know they'll never finish, because they've dissipated all their energy by talking about it. They've already generated all the love they need from your feedback about their ideas. If you can be the person who keeps their head down and finishes your project, you will inspire and motivate not only yourself and the people involved with your project, but others too. 5) Because no one cares. We've grown up in strange times. Musicians see their heroes recording for months at a time, walling themselves off in expensive studios, and releasing album trailers to the acclaim of millions of adoring fans. A certain mythology has developed around the event of releasing an album. This mythology has led artists to do some crazy things, among them thinking it has to be 'perfect', or thinking they need to hoard their work. But if no one is waiting for your album, just do. Do your album as the wind blows. For no reason and with no cause. Get it done simply because you love it, and the promotion side will come naturally (because if you love your art, you should promote it). If no one cares, let that free you, and then, let them care because you do. Editorial Special Try This Easy and Legit Folowers To Get More For Your Band On Twitter By Andrew Muller of www.therealmusician.com

First off, when you're promoting your band on Twitter we absolutely want to stay away from spam. That means no direct messaging people with links (if you haven't spoken to them before). Same for using the @username to get someone's attention. No unsolicited links or promos! If you haven't spoken to that person before, then you shouldn't be bombarding them with links to your album. At the very least, give them a shout out and start a conversation. As long as your Bandcamp or website URL is in your profile description, they will organically check you out. Now that we've gotten spam out of the way, let's look at how you can target fans who would listen to your band, and how to get their attention and get them to follow you.

The

Process

Start by making a list of about 5-10 bands who meet this criteria: 1. You love them 2. They have similar music, or a similar audience to your music 3. They have at least 3,000 followers (if not much more) Take a look at their followers list. The main technique here is to follow the people who are already following music like yours. So go through these bands one at a time, and follow their followers. This will get their fans attention. Depending on a few factors, about 5-20% of them will follow you back. Ways To Maximize The Ones Who Follow You Back First off, get yourself custom graphics. That means profile picture, header image, and background. Do not use any of Twitter's default graphics. Heck, even a plain white background is better than the default blue twitter background. 34 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Editorial Special Bands that I do this method for have had a great response if they have custom graphics. Any bands that I've worked with who have default images consistently produce worse results.

Also, It's Important That You Are Tweeting Regularly If you only have 8 tweets, don't expect this technique to produce great results.

How Many Should I Follow Per Day At max, I recommend you follow 100 people a day. Any more than that and you might start to get flagged as a spammer by Twitter (who follows 1000 people per day, seriously?) If you have a brand new account, and you only have 10 followers, I would only follow 20-40 per day. Once you've gotten over 80 followers though, I would say it's safe to start hitting the 100/day mark.

What About The People Who Don't Follow Me Back? You'll want to keep track of anyone who doesn't follow you back, and after about 3-5 days, unfollow them. This gives them some time to follow you back. It's very important that you don't keep followers around who aren't following you back (unless you really like their updates or you know them personally) so that your Twitter presence doesn't get tarnished (it just looks bad when you're following 10,000 people and you only have 500 followers). It can be a bit tricky to realize which people you followed each day, and calculate the date since you followed them. Tracking people in an excel spreadsheet can work, but it takes some time.

What Type or Results Should Expect If you take the 5-10 minutes a day (about 4 hours a month) to follow about 100 people each day, you should expect between 75-225 new followers each month, depending on how well you've optimized your profile graphics and how often you tweet.

Artist Spotlight: E m

d Story & Interview By Bag -

Inspired and touched by a colourful palette of life experiences, it's no mystery how Emberfield conjures up such endearing, bright and earnest songs to share with the world. Intrigued by their debut EP, Lost and Dreaming, I had to invite singer, guitarist, Steve Marroitt, and singer, multi-instrumentalist, Nashlyn Lloyd over for a fun chat. From discovering their musical roots to how they will make Western Canada shine throughout their upcoming summer tour, it's all down below! What have you guys been up to?

Steve: Working on a lot of new material. We've been ,working pretty steadily since we came out of the studio of our debut EP, Lost and Dreaming. Nashlyn: Also, Steve has been booking shows like crazy! We've got a tour coming up at the end of July. It'll be our first tour all the way to Calgary, and Edmonton, you can call it a Western Canada tour. Any cities that you are especially excited to play? Steve: It'll be our third time playing in Kelowna, and Kamloops! Nashlyn: There's this really great band called Joyful Door in Kelowna that we are playing with again, so that's gonna be sweet. Steve: The Infectuals are joining us for the Kamloops show, so we are playing with a few different bands we've played with before. I'm really excited for Edmonton because it'll be our first Alberta show ever. Any other plans for the summer? Nashlyn: I'm taking comedy classes, learning how to be funnier on stage. Steve is already funny. He's really good with jokes, so I'm trying to come up with whittier banter, so we can banter back and forth on stage. It has been a couple months since you've released your debut EP, Lost and Dreaming. How are people responding to it online, and live? Nashlyn: It's been good! We got some reviews in the Georgia Straight, Vancouver Music Review and some radio play. Apparently we got played on CBC radio. There's also this really awesome radio show in town called Nash-T Business that debuted it, which was great. Also, our release show at Joe's Apartment was crazy, so many people came out to that. The entire venue was packed and everyone was in such a good mood. The coolest thing about the night was when we played Shine, the radio single, we saw people singing along in the crowd. I've never seen that before, so it was awesome. I felt like a mini celebrity because it was our first big show. All my mom's friends from the North Shore came out, people that I haven't seen in forever, my brother's friends, and I got to sign somebody's chest! What was the writing process for the EP? Nashlyn: Before we had our current lineup, Steve had already written the songs. 38 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Artist Spotlight However, once Nash joined the band we changed the songs around quite substantially. They are totally different songs now. Nashlyn: Steve had the framework before, but when Chris and I joined the band about a year ago we added different things because I brought piano and female backup vocals to the band, so that changed things quite a bit. When Dan (bassist) tried to do female vocals, it just didn't work [laughs] What is the vocal dynamic between you guys looking like in the future? Is it going to be more so 50/50 sharing vocal duties? Nashlyn: Yeah, we really like Of Monsters and Men. A lot of people have been comparing us to The New Pornographers who obviously have male and female vocals going on. There are songs that are more Steve focused, some that are more me focused, and there's a few that are right down the middle. I'm curious to see how it all turns out, but I'm happy how it has been working out so far. Where did you guys record it? Nashlyn: Monarch studios, it's Tom Dobrzanski's new studio. He's worked with Hey Ocean!, Said the Whale, We are the City, and he's also the keyboardist of the Zolas. Did he go beyond just recording and mixing for the EP?

Steve: Totally. It was a little scary at first when he said, "let's take this big chunk out of the middle of the song." I was thinking, 'we've been playing with that chunk of the song for a year! How can we just get rid of it so easily?' We tried it both ways, and it ended up sounding better without it. We also altered sections for couple other songs, I can't remember how the originals sounded like anymore. Nashlyn: Preproduction was really cool. The whole thing was really cool. I learned so much as a musician through that experience, having someone way more experienced than you just come in and teach you things. Since then we've been looking at everything we've written a lot differently because now we are thinking about what it would sound like in a studio environment. When and how did you start playing instruments? I've been attending a place called, Camp Goodtimes since I was twelve. It's a camp for kids who have cancer and their siblings. My brother had cancer when I was quite young, he's younger than me. He attended this camp for many years, and for his final year as a camper, one of the counsellors brought his guitar, sat around the campfire all night playing songs like Jack and Diane, Hotel California. I was just inspired, 'this guy is so cool, I want to do that one day!' I bought a guitar a few years later, and the rest is history. I've been taking my guitar back to camp and volunteering there for the last seven years. That's what the song Good Time is all about, and how the camp has inspired my life. It's just a magical place. Nashlyn: My parents put me in music lessons since I was two, so I was playing claves and learning about "Ia ti doe." Then I started playing piano all throughout my life. I've always had some instrument on the go. I loved being in choirs and jazz choirs all throughout high school and university. It has always been there even after times I've tried to stop. For example, I broke both of my wrists snowboarding when I was fourteen, I was so tired of playing piano, so I used that as an excuse to quit for a while, but I ended up picking up the guitar a month later. It has always been a part of my life, something I have to do to stay sane. Steve째 As far as the other guys in the band, Chris started playing guitar, then he and his friends got really into Rock Band and started taking on the drums. That's literally how he July 2013 - Vandala.Ca 39

Artist Spotlight started. He's been playing for a few years now and he's really good. Dan and I used to play alto sax together in grade five all throughout high school. In grade 10 he bought a bass guitar, but didn't practice much until the start of this band. He's amazing for the short time he has been playing. What are some local bands that you like to share the stage with? Nashlyn: The CD release show, we played with Cocahala. I guess they've been together for a while, but they just rebranded themselves a lot, and started putting out a new sound. They were amazing, unbelievable. Steve: Chris also drums for This Side of Town. They're more of a pop punk band. We've played over ten shows with them. We get along really well, toured with them a little bit last summer. They are really cool guys. What music do you listen to that your fans may not expect you to be listening to? Nashlyn: I listen to a lot of dubstep, hardcore electronic music that is nowhere near what we play. Our music is really happy, everybody keeps using the word, fun and earnest. One radio host told us, "this sounds very sentimental." I have a lot of punk rock origins because my cousin got me into a lot of bands back in the day. I used to play guitar in one, it was my first live music experience. For example, Rise Against, Less than Jake, lots of ska. Nowadays, I'm into more local indie rock. Nashlyn: I've been listening to less electronic music now too. That's all I listened to in the beginning of the year, but I am going to Burning Man this year. What do you foresee happening at Burning Man? Nashlyn: I'm hoping that I have some type of weird epiphany and become a crazy hippy in the desert somewhere. [Laughs] How will you guys approach your next release? Nashlyn: I want us to write at least thirty songs before we consider doing a full length because I want to cut out the bad ones and just have the best. Steve: I totally agree, rather than writing the minimal amount of songs for the release, we'll write as many as we can and pick the best of the best. Nashlyn: It's only been three months and we've written seven songs, so if we keep going, why not? I heard that you were in the midst of moving to Toronto, but then you decided to stay because of the song Shine? Nashlyn: When we first got together over craigslist in March of last year, we practiced for probably two months, haven't played a show, then I decided that I was gonna go to Toronto to pursue the music industry. I got an apartment and everything, I was going with three of my friends. We were about to sign the lease and then I went to one last practice because Steve told me, "you can still come practice one more time." At the end of the practice they played Shine, and told me that the song is about the situation, you are going off to Toronto to pursue your dreams, so this is your song! By the end of that, I said "oh screw it! I'm not moving to Toronto." [laughs] What are some of your goals as a band this year? Nashlyn: We are planning a music video! It'll be for Shine, and will have a similar theme to packing your bags and moving away, following your dreams. Any words for your fans out there? Nashlyn: Come out to our shows and Check us out online vww.emberfield.com 40 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Artist Spotlight: Rykka Rykka a Natural Talent and Just Good Music Story, Interview & Photo By Crystal Lee Not very often as the editor in chief do I get super excited and pulled away from my desk. Though when I received Rykka's press release not only was I blown away by her album I was intrigued. So I made my way to Kelowna, BC to catch her live and talk with her. I got to the smaller venue Streaming Café (they stream the shows live) in Kelowna - many may like going to the larger venues but I enjoy the smaller '40 ones like the Streaming Café which is a hidden gem. Beautiful local artwork on the wall, bright (the photographer me was thankful), windows open and a friendly theug h Iaw tm asos ep ah rleyre il tg bh ot h wca roywIdwaansdg by Even ta greeted by the wonderful Rykka (Christina Maria) herself just before sound check. I love to see artists warm up and in sound check, being in the music industry as long as I have I like to see the raw and real talent, most of all to see how real it is. I can tell you I was impressed right away by Rykka! She is not only beautiful inside and outside but a natural talent. Her voice sounds right off the album even in the sound check! The Streaming café was a perfect place to enjoy Rykka live since you just got Rykka for who she is. This young woman was one of my favorite interviews since she was so pure and nothing else. Her latest album Kodiak was released via her own label Vissen Records. This driven artist and I talked about her traveling back and forth from Switzerland and other travels, the meaning of the album along with the making of the album and so much more. You use to play folk all over Vancouver, what made you change to the sound you have now?

Christina° I have evolved a lot, and I have traveled so much. I am always changing. It took me a year to write this album. By the end of writing and recording it became rockier. Then I decided to change my artist name to. A fresh start. Where did the name Rykka come from?

Christina: I just found one I liked - I think it's a Scandinavian name. I just looked up baby names up online and chose one I liked. That's such a cool way to finding a name. On facebook you mention a lot of artists that I love and that most young people may not know such as Kate Bush, Pat Benatar - Who or what do you draw the most musical influence from? Christina: My biggest influence is that I am inspired by is my peers and friends. There's so much music good music in Canada. Ryan {Ryan Guldemond of Mother Mother} who produced the album he is also inspiring I noticed on the album you had some great names such as engineer Sean Penner, mixer Warne Livesey (Matthew Good Band, 54:40), and producer Ryan Guldemond How did all 3 of those guys come together to work on the album? Christina: Well I met Ryan I think through music school since we went to the same music school BCC. And he was there before me but we also had a lot mutual friends. I also grew 44 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Artist Spotlight° Christaina Maria up watching Mother Mother who are awesome - Then it just happened from there. When doing research on you I noticed you have dual citizenship; Switzerland and Canada. How important is it for you to keep your Swiss roots Christina: My Swiss roots are important. I just went over there to start doing music 3 years ago. Pretty much right away I signed with Little Jig Records and we put the record out. Ever since then I have been going back and forth. I mean I have my life definitely between both places pretty much equally. I will never lose my Swiss roots. I grew up going to Swiss Society outings and stuff. My family really took part in the Vancouver Swiss Society when I was growing up so it's always been there being Swiss Canadian. With traveling back and forth when do you find the time to do everything such as writing, recording and so forth? Christina: I think it helps me, I find it awesome to travel around because I can't play to many shows in one place so it's a lot easier moving around so. It's like being on tour all the time. I am so blessed and lucky that I'm able to work in both Europe and Canada. I noticed Europe has really embraced you. Christina: YA! It's really going well over there and it's a lot of fun to tour over there. Let's talk about that album- Kodiak. First off what was in your press release "All of Kodiak's tracks are sung from the perspective of different animals — "Blackie" a murder of crows, "Down in the Depths" deep sea fish — but they carry unquestionably human themes and concerns. Listening to Rykka's cryptic yet relatable poetry, fans might never realize that the protagonists are not people. What made you write from the perspective of animals? Christina: We are living in a world where we are pretty much ruining it. I think that's pretty intense. I also wanted to work with a concept; I thought if I wrote from the animal perspective it would bridge the gap between humans and nature. Also because it's in first person. It's like you are the animal when you are listening to it. That's how I wanted to connect animals and nature more with my music. Some of your songs are very poetic and cryptic - Why be so cryptic? Christina: I didn't want to be so obvious and preachy; I just wanted people to interpret my songs for themselves. If they wanted to learn more about them they could look at interviews, or in my bio. When you think a song means one thing and ends up being about something else I think it's awesome and love songs when they do that. What are some of the major themes on your album that you really wanted to get out their? Christina: There's a lot of themes. It's not always written from one animal perspective it's more written A. from themes around different animals. So "Map Inside" is about migration it's kind of from different birds perspectives. "Down In the Depths" is from deep fish perspectives. "With Love, In Woe" it's like animal sadness. The Video for "Blackie" a song I have to say I love has an interesting video as people as crows. How did the video come about?

Christina: I opened for Mother Mother about a year and half ago at the Commodore. At that show there was a guy named C J Wallis and he asked if I wanted to film a music video July 2013 - Vandala.Ca 45

and I said yes. We collaborated and wrote the story line together. I made the masks, and then we filmed it in my mother's garage. It didn't look like it was filmed in a garage! Christina: Well I have really great friends and am a very lucky lady. On your webpage you have a spot called "Action" which I thought was pretty cool since it has many interesting videos from Free Pussy Riot, Safe Tuna to the Dove Beauty campaign. What are some important messages you want to get out there? Christina: Animals and nature - I am really looking to focus with one organization right now and work with one. I wrote the whole album for the environment and nature so the organization I would work with would be along those lines. You're currently on tour in Canada and heading to Switzerland how do you survive the amount of travel? It's no secret that Canada is vast and then heading overseas right after can be exhausting. Christina: I love people, my friends are everywhere and they help me. If it's an international flight I try to block the day before and after the flight and just sleep and lay in bed. Sometimes I just work too hard and it's not good. What are some of the plans for you in the future?

Christina I

just got involved in the Peak Performance project. Music BC and the Peak Radio station collaborated which then chose 20 artists from BC. The winner gets a $100,000. I took part in it 3 years ago. There's so much love! There is also a boot camp for a week and the people are just amazing! I hope you win!

Rykka is one driven woman with so much more to come. She put on an excellent show. Not only did I have an amazing time at the show, I enjoyed the Streaming Cafe. Over the course of the past few years, the London-based YOUNG GUNS have emerged as one of the UK's most electrifying new bands, \ • • gal nermg heavy radio play and UK chart success, while playing to packed-house crowds / all across Europe, including a main stage performance at the Reading Festival, where, they tore up the stage as part of a lineup that included Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, Guns N' Roses and Modest Mouse. Their new album BONES has already achieved critical acclaim overseas, BONES and its title track were also nominated for "Best Album" and "Best Single" as part of this year's 2012 Kerrang! Awards.

.,‘

Last month I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with lead singer Gustav Wood of the band Young Guns about the band's recent efforts with touring the states after making a jump across the pond from London, England. — Also the inside scoop on their album Bones, and ask him about his favorite wrestler of all time.

„Vim and Interview By Lana Ni111111011S

• Young Guns I see I'm calling you in Oklahoma, you guys are there for Rocklahoma right? We're on our way, I'm not entirely sure where we are right now, it's our day off so we're travelling around. But yeah that's right, we have our show tomorrow and I think we have two more, and then we go home. The bill looks amazing, you must be really pumped. Yeah it is pretty rad. We've actually been on tour with Bullet For My Valentine and Hailstorm, and it's been fantastic. In the past few weeks we've done eight or ten festivals. It's been really exciting, a lot of the shows have been bands that have been doing the festival circuit so we get to see a lot of familiar faces and have made some friends. After this fest you're off to Ireland, then back in the UK for more festivals right? Gustav: We have three shows in Ireland, a day off when we get back so we can recover from jet lag, but there will be great bands in Ireland. Then over the next couple of weeks we have a few festivals in the UK: we have the Download Festival which is huge. Then we have the Isle Of Wight Festival and a few weeks off, which we will use to write new material for the new album, and then we go to Brazil. So we still have a busy summer ahead of us, but we are looking forward to going back and re-connecting with the UK for a while. I always find it amazing when I hear of musicians going from one time zone to the next doing one show after another. It must be pretty intense. You know most of the time I don't know precisely where I am, or what day of the week it is and in some ways it's such a privilege because there are not many people in the world that have the ability or to disconnect themselves from reality of knowing where you are what day of the week it is. There are definitely downsides, you know like being tired I suppose, from no sleep or jet lag, but you know it's a dynamic lifestyle. We really do consider ourselves very lucky. What's the story behind Young Guns, how did you all meet? Gustav I went to University and studied and when I was there I met a dude who was in a band with John who is the guitarist. One summer he said, "hey man we're on break, do you want to come up to the area I live in and see my band for this local battle of the bands?" And I was like "cool". I took the train up and went to the show, met all of his friends and the band and that's where I met John. I got to know him pretty well and two months later John came to London. We ended up hanging out for a few months and he ended up asking me to join a new band he started, where I played guitar in that one, and then I met a bunch of people through him who all grew up in the same area and played in bands together and over two years the lineup changed someone came from this band or that band, here or there. Landed up in a big circle of musicians and slowly the lineup fell together bit by bit and in 2008 Simon joined and the chemistry was just right, and worked so we wrote five songs we like and hit the road and we started to build a fan base. And here we are. It was pretty organic. I really enjoyed Bones, your latest album. Can you give our readers more of an idea of the story behind the album and what it's trying to convey to the listener? Well thank you very much, I really appreciate that! Well I didn't necessarily set out a specific concept, but if there was an overall theme, I guess there is a recurring theme, it would be the concept of time. And how everything is finite. You know this band to me is a real opportunity and chance to do something I really care about, and get up every morning and do something I've never really done before. The album is really about living in the moment, and trying to achieve something, and you know that's how I feel, and is sort of my attitude towards this band. 52 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

Interview: Gustav The album was recorded at Karma Sound Studios in Thailand, why Thailand? Well, it's very simple: We wanted to be in a place we've never been before, we really wanted to put ourselves in a new environment and be away from distractions and the idea that we could do that pushes ourselves to be a better newer band, you know. The trapping of the normal, you know being in the same room for six years. So that's one reason why we decided to do it. A friend of ours knows the man who owns the studio in Thailand, and it's a beautiful studio. What an incredible place, more like abbey road, beautiful live in studio with an open concept, they had cooks, pool and a gym and all this ridiculous stuff. The first album we recorded was recorded at the Oat Box studio room, and we would sleep on the floor you know. So in the end it was no more expensive to fly to Thailand, record and live there then it would be to record in my studio. So once that kind of option is on the table, it wasn't really difficult to make. So predictably we decided to record in Thailand. I thought it was interesting, I would have never though Thailand, I would think major cities in Western Europe, or North America like New York, LA, London etc. Well of course that's a major misconception that most people have, myself included. We were like what? Go to Thailand are you crazy? But there I was, great studio, great equipment, and most important matter, it had a great atmosphere. We were really charmed by being in that place and I think by going there it was really an important factor in the record, and subsequently how it did. It allowed us to believe that we were a bigger band than we were, and part of that was being in such a beautiful environment. So it was the right call. I really like the cover art for the album? Who designed it? Is there a story behind the concept? It's a guy who's in Toronto actually, he's a friend of ours. His name is Paul Jackson, and he owns his own graphic art company and has actually done all of our artwork up to date. He did our first EP, he did our first record- he's a really talented guy. We actually spoke about the idea of Bones and we'd throw ideas back and forth- one thing we knew and didn't want was the overly obvious you know, a pile of bones or skull cross or anything like that. So we came up with this idea that bones could be a metaphor for something personal and intimate, private you know. So the image isn't a woman floating in the air- I mean it is, but it isn't. It's just a woman in her room in the early morning light experiencing just a personal moment of rapture, just getting lost in that moment. I find it just so striking. Paul did a really great job. How do you think your album Bones differs from All our Kings are Dead? I do feel fundamentally there is a progression there, as a band sonically. To a degree we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do as a band in our first record. You know a bunch of guys just jamming and it was a great time. That first record, it was us being young, newer and greener, and we were figuring our sound. I think that primarily Bones is more focused and tidy, and we had a clearer idea of what we wanted to achieve. Basically it's an album, song are songs we just have a little more focus. You know from the beginning we just wanted to write songs we could be proud of and we felt were. July 2013 - Vandala.Ca 53

Cover Story Young , Guns You know we didn't want to sound like a small UK band, we wanted to sound like we were bigger. I'm pretty proud of this record and I think we haven't even started to be the band we will be, and that's what I'm really excited about. We are always pushing to learn moreand you know we are doing the right thing. I found I really saw that with this album, from the lyrics, to composition, and production, it's a really high end album. Gustav Thank you, cool, I really am proud of this record and I think we've haven't really even begun to be the band we will be. That's something I'm really excited about, and you know we're really pushing ourselves to learn and to be better. The video for Bones is quite interesting- where did the concept come from? Well actually we didn't really want anything overbearing or strong concept. We actually thought that if we did too much people would listen, or concentrate on the song itself. The thing we wanted to play with the most is textures and shapes you know a lot of silhouettes. And by taking this big room with a white light in basically a warehouse- by taking hints from the album design a couple of women dancing and being alive. I like how we were able to get a little bit of the London skyline in there, because, as you know, we're a British band- and I don't think it's necessarily obvious in our music. We just wanted a video that evoked an emotion, or response instead of an overly complex storyline. We instead played with some visuals. My friend Tim Mattia is the one who directed the video and he did a great job. Bones was used as one of the theme songs for Wrestlemania-how did this happen? Very simply, they got in touch with us and said they loved the band and the song and asked us if they could use it and we were like "ok, cool". You know, there you are. You know we were pretty blown away from that, it's a great chance to reach out to a wider audience, and that kind of stuff. Fundamentally, it was a big thumbs up to the kid inside of us. That was a real special thing for us.

Did you watch wrestling as a kids or now? Yeah you know for sure. When I was a boy my favorite was the Undertaker, that's really rad to be a part of that and I remember being a little kid playing with the cables to get that signal on TV and I would watch Wrestlemania. That was really cool. You guys reached #1 in the US for Bones- I can only imagine what that feels like for an

artist. You know disbelief mainly, it's really incredible. It's really is. It's almost too big to wrap my head around it. Again it's one of those things which will contribute towards building our band and giving people something to be interested about. We're really lucky you know. I think what it means is that- in this day and age where there is so much music everywhere, when you reach those billboards it kind of gives you a stamp of approval and people tend to start giving a shut. Now what I and the rest of the world is wondering, and you mention in passing earlier: are you working on some new material, and can we expect a new album out sometime later this year? We are writing at the moment, and we have songs we are really excited about. We got to do some more writing- we'll be writing in a few patches over the next few months, then October we're in Nashville so towards the Festival season next year. On September 3, 2013, Anti- will release Neko Case's first album in over four years, 'The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You.' The first single "Man" is available now on iTunes. Neko will kick off a full North American tour on September 6 at the Hideout Block Party in Chicago, IL.

CASE

`The Worse Things Get' is Neko's most precise, urgent record to date, marked by a melodic immediacy, a loving embrace of the big rock gesture, and a lyrical frankness typified by first single "Man," in which she warns "I'm a man...you'll deal with me directly."

"My brain wilderness is more interesting and dangerous than I thought," says Case. "It was an embarrassing and hilarious march, but I now feel like a more streamlined being. It's a good feeling. ee Album From Hip Hoppers Conscious Route Lawn El 'The Sinking' LP is the latest release from Conscious Route (CCF/SOS) who teams up with producer Sean El (United Front). The pair teamed up after meeting at a Soul Mischief gig back in 2012 and since then have strengthened their link by collaborating on tracks over the last year, most of which are included as the back-bone of this release. Eighteen tracks of deep, the long player is a brilliant collection of Boom Bap fused beats complimented with a feast of conscious flows and controversial punch-lines. It's no wonder they've got the Internet going nuts with a string of solid reviews on leading Hip-Hop blogs. The album has a host of features, including Wolverhampton's Big Dutty Deeze, Cambridge's Dillah from B-illa, Edinburgh's Werd & Jordan Butler (SOS), Blasfima Sinna, London-based singer Anna Fontana and many more. With Sean El also dropping in on the raps, this diverse LP was mostly spot-written, apart from four tracks, with the recording of the beats and raps all completed in just a five hour period! With a very diverse beat selection there seems to be something included here for every kind of Hip-Hop head, even turning the ears of Hip-Hop non-believers and haters to maybe even liking a track or two! Basically, this is a must listen! Turisas Debuts New Song From Upcoming Album 'Turism Get ready for Turisas to paint your town red and black again! The band has now revealed the first details about their upcoming album along with a taste of the upcoming album.

/4;

The album was produced yet again by vocalist Mathias Nygdrd, and the majority of the album was recorded by Mathias Nygdrd and guitarist Jussi Wickstrom in a remote house outside of Helsinki that served as the Turisas2013 command center and headquarters. Additional recordings were done in 3 other studios: drums at Atomic Spa Studio (Helsinki), orchestral recordings at 5 by 5 Studio (Helsinki), and most of the vocals and additional acoustic elements at Sound Supreme Studio (Hameenlinna), where Turisas also recorded The Varangian Way and Stand Up And Fight.

Turisas

With Turisas2013, the band deliberately aimed for a more organic sound. Mathias "Warlord" Nygdrd further comments: "When it comes to the production it's just the opposite of the polished and massive 'Stand Up And Fight'. It's raw and dry and in your face, but still maintaining that Turisas-largeness. People attest to us that we are a great live band and we wanted the album to be based more around that than orchestral massiveness. It's our most varied record to date and even if some of the songs sound very different, I think the common thread is that every single one has a lot of energy to it." Turisas are giving fans a first taste of the new material - the album's opening track, "For Your Own Good," can now be heard here: www.youtu.be/eRym6gz4h,and for more on Turisas ovisit www.turisas.com & mww.facebook.com/turisas 62 Vandala.Ca - July 2013

New Album From Female-Fronted Technical Death MetaIle South Carolina female-fronted technical death metal band Your Chance To Die is thrilled to announce the release of their sophomore full-length album, The American Dream via Red Cord Records. In addition, the band has released a new music video for the track 'Oscuridad' that fans can watch on YouTube at www.youtu.be/d--NgmtnRdQ. Shred-worthy guitar solos, pounding blast beats and shattering growls make this track a must-listen. On a larger scale, the new album The American Dream captures the listener with its heavy yet darkly ambient tracks, bringing a new dimension to the band's already polished sound.

Now, we know what you're thinking. Female-fronted technical death metal? Really? Can that possibly work and still belegitimate death metal? Yes, really. Take one listen/watch of their new music video for the single 'Oscuridad' and it will become increasingly apparent that this band is all skill and no frill, with a female vocalist that gives many of today's male death metal vocalists a marathon-worthy run for their money. Misery Signal Release New Album in Five Years New Damage Records is proud to announce the addition of Milwaukee metal band Misery Signals to their expanding roster in Canada. One of the year's most anticipated releases, Misery Signals first album in five years Absent Light will be unleashed on July 23rd in Canada. Foregoing the traditional record label release model, Misery Signals launched an Indiegogo campaign in March to work directly with fans to crowd-fund the new album by offering unique funding packages that included handwritten lyrics, vinyl box set, listening parties and more. By May, the band had not only reached their funding goal, but had surpassed it by double the amount. The support was a definite sign that fans were eagerly awaiting new music from the seminal band. A largely self-produced effort, mixed by trailblazing studio maestro Steve Evetts (The Cure, Glassjaw), Absent Light wasn't bound by creative limitations, label pressure or outside expectation. The symbolism on Absent Light is thick and rich, from the trenches of war to the taste of ashes, burned out gaslights to the bewilderment of regret and closure. The recurring theme is one of losing your way with an object of attachment. Buoyed by a real-life 40-string ensemble with real instruments (the Morgans' father has spent decades with the Madison Symphony Orchestra) and even more exotic musical tools throughout, Absent Light retains the cinematic-sounding ambition that saw Revolver once compare Misery Signals to Sigur Ros. Misery Signals will kick off their record release tour in July with dates running through mid-August. Tour dates can be found at www.miserysignals.net To get a little taste of the new record, the band has just released a clip from the track "Reborn (an execution)". Music Prize Nornmees

For fun I've decided to make my own predictions for the short list, I'd figured it be fun to see if I'm right. While looking through the list I came down with the same conundrum that the host Andreanne Sasseville expressed. She noted at the beginning of the event that this year in particular, was particularly hard to narrow down even to 40 artists due to the over flux of talent. I've noticed this as well, concerts artists are getting stronger and the quality of albums are becoming more supreme. So biting the bullet I sat down and streamed 40 albums to come up with my own personal short list. Most of these artist I have seen play live and can contest how talented they are. • Whitehorse - The Fate of the World Depends On This Kiss • Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob • Suuns - Images du futur • Rah Rah - The Poet's Dead • Metric - Synthetica • METZ - METZ • Kid Koala - 12 bit Blues • Purity Ring - Shrines • Young Galaxy - Ultramarine • The Luyas - Animator ABOUT: The Polaris Music Prize awards $30,000 "to the artist who creates the Canadian Album of the Year. Judged solely on artistic merit, without consideration of genre or record sales.Past winners have included Feist (2012), Arcade Fire (2011), Karkwa (2010), F.cked Up (2009), Caribou (2008), Patrick Watson (2007) and Final Fantasy (2006). The shortlist will be announced on July 16th and the winners of this year's prize will be announced at the 2013 Polaris Music Prize Gala on September 23rd in Toronto. www.polarismusicprize.ca

Record New Studio Album This July Savage Messiahhas entered the studio on July 1st to begin recording their currently untitled new studio album. The band will be working on the follow-up to 2012's Plague Of Conscience with producer Scott Atkins (SYLOSIS, BEHEMOTH) at Grindstone Studios in Suffolk. Savage Messiahfront-man Dave Silver comments: "We're beyond excited to be fast approaching the day when we'll head off back into Grindstone Studios, to work once more with Scott Atkins on what we can promise will be the most metal Savage MessiahCD yet! We've approached the writing process in a totally old school manner; just four guys in a rehearsal space getting a vibe going, playing heavy metal! Which has really allowed us to express the chemistry within the band and build on the musical foundation we laid with 'Plague of Conscience'. We're pleased to be working with Scott Atkins for the third time, as he understands the band and has always delivered above and beyond for us and we've no doubt that he'll get the best out of us once again. We'll be releasing titles, track listings, artwork, etc. in due course. In the meantime, look out for plenty of studio video updates which we'll be posting over at our official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/savagemessiahmetal). Saintseneca

ngs With ANTI & Announce Live Show Dates

Si

Anti- is thrilled to announce the signing of Saintseneca, a young band from Columbus, Ohio led by singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Zac Little. The group utilizes a wide range of instrumentation (violin, mandolin, dulcimer, Turkish Baglama, floor percussion) with the more contemporary elements such as synthesizers and electric guitars to create a unique merging of rustic and modern. Folk and country motifs converge seamlessly with soaring vocals and a vibrant post-punk energy. While the group formed in Columbus Ohio, a majority of Saintseneca's members, including songwriter Little, hail from the rural hills of Appalachia. It is a landscape that has infused the group's expansive and evocative music with a deep sense of introspection. "I was raised on farms in Appalachia, "Little explains, "And I think that my perspective on music was shaped by where I grew up. Being so isolated played a huge role in my music and in the subjects I write about." The band's poetic lyricism and folk instrumentation is powerfully enhanced by elements of pop, post-punk and psychedelia. It is a memorable and moving sound which originally evolved playing alongside electrified punk bands at DIY house shows. Special Event Gwar's 4th Annual BE Slave Pit Inc., creators of GWAR and a slew of other naughty products, today announced new details regarding the summer's most eagerly anticipated entertainment apocalypse, the 4th annual GWAR-B-Q, to be held August 17th at Hadad's Water Park in Richmond, Va. Attendees can now add not one but TWO new social events to be held the same weekend as the GWAR-B-Q - the "B4-B-Q" (to be held the night before at The Canal Club), and the "GWA-fter Party" (after the GWAR-B-Q, for those of you who are morons). In addition, the directors of GWAR's coveted "Spew-O-Lympics", a centerpiece event of every GWAR-B-Q, released a statement regarding this year's event and the incredible prize package some lucky Spew-lympian will ultimately attain. A full feast of fun awaits the teeming masses as Richmond prepares for the most action-packed weekend in the glorious history of the GWAR-B-Q!

On Friday, Aug.16th, the festivities begin with the "B4-B-Q", a power-packed line-up of brutal bands to be held at Richmond's venerated Canal Club, which for the (Artist Rendition of Typical GWAR last two years has hosted the Cory Smoot Memorial Fan Before and After GWAR-B-Q) Show. Admission is FREE to any GWAR-B-Q ticket holder, so be sure to bring a copy of your ticket, or a receipt, or the actual ticket (if you are an idiot). Check the "B4-B-Q" event page on the official GWAR Facebook page for more information. Hosted by the personal Slaves of Oderus and Balsac, Dave Brockie and Mike Derks, doors open at 7 and the line-up consists of, in no particular order: Apocalypse Dudes/RVA, U.S. Bastards/RVA, Savage Attack/RVA, Bloody Crackdown/ RVA, Red Box Money Cult/Roanoke, Rong/Wilmington, Stuck Backwards/Norfolk With acts like GWAR, Municipal Waste, Corrosion of Conformity, Pig Destroyer, and the re-union of the legendary X-Cops, this years' bill is possibly the greatest yet assembled in the blood-spattered history of GWAR's ever-expanding festival. So this year's Spew-O-Lympics intends to match this majesty with the most epic contest yet conceived, with events scheduled to include the "King of the Swing", "Beware of the Blob", with the climactic battle for supremacy (and valuable prizes) waged on the "Sperm and Slide". This years contest will be limited to a lucky 25 entrants, who must sign-up in advance via GWAR's Facebook page. Look for more details on the official GWAR Facebook page . And if that's not enough filthy fun for you, the fine folks at Slave Pit have scheduled one last event that should satiate even the most unappeasable bohab's desire to bask in the dubious glory of all things GWAR--the "GWA-fter Party". Held on Saturday, August 17th at Balliceaux, in Richmond, VA., and hosted by the internationally matchless D.J.Pari, the event is free not only to GWAR-B-Q ticket holders but also everybody else in the entire world. Doors are at ten, and look for more information at the "GWA-fter Party" events page on the official GWAR Facebook page (www.facebook.com/gwar) And remember to check out all the latest GWAR-B-Q news at www.gwarbq.com and check out Gwar on The web at www.gwar.net. 74 Vandala.Ca - July 2013
