In January, Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls announced a new solo project, and five months later Kristin Kontrol has officially arrived. X-Communicate is a well crafted fun excursion of 80's new wave pop, with a modern touch. Dum Dum Girls fans may be taken aback at first listen; however the closer one listens, the similarities to previous work, though subtitles are there. What is not subtle is the passion entrenched in each track with lots of excitement, but still corralling the fun to get serious, and deliver a couple of synth ballads ("What is Love" "Smoke Rings"). The title track ("X-Communicate") will stick with you for days, singing along to the chorus, mentally dancing, and smiling internal and externally. www.kristinkontrol.com
The Kills - Ash & Ice (Indic Rock) By Michael Smith- 4/5 Dragons The latest and easily the most anticipated album from one of the "it" bands of more than just the college rock scene, but the rock n roll scene on the biggest stage. The duo have spent over a crafting one of the most exciting live performances anyone is lucky to attend, and making their own brand of gritty rock and roll. Alison Mosshart has thrown her name in the list of biggest bad asses in music and life. Ash & Ice is shows a lot of growth over the five years since their last release. The song writing is strong and the crunchy guitar whales of Jamie Hince still bring a lot of power to tracks such has "Hard Habit to Break" and "Impossible Tracks". There is something that feels a bit different throughout the entire album, but fans old and new ASH &ICE will not be disappointed, this album may not have the dirty feeling to the extent of their first two releases, but is a well conceived rock album for all audiences. www.thekills.tv THE KILLS

Album Remiew Realizm - The Keys To The Cult Collection (Hip Hop) By Chad Thomas Carsten - 4.5/5 Dragons Born Shane Manoel, Realizm is Australia's best kept secret in hip-hop. He's not only an intelligent lyrical emcee, but his production skills are far above and beyond most of the mainstream, yet hardly anyone knows him, even though this wicked underground warrior has been dropping slamming boom bap style beats for over 15+ years! Shane is not some bullshit faux producer (most of the internet is like this, sadly.) trying to make cheap ass beats on his mothers laptop through frooty loops and sell them pathetically for .99 cents on soundclick (yes, that still exists). Nope! Far from that! Realizm is the producer noble OG rappers should be fighting amongst themselves over who found him first and which rapper deserves to be on his dope ass shit. After all these years, Realizm still continues to strive at putting out nothing but absolute perfection. It's just insane with the amount of work this cat puts into his career, some days he goes almost a week without sleep. Guaranteed Realizm could make an album for someone like Onyx or Strange Music's Prozak and they would highly benefit from having such a master at beats working closely with them thanks in due part behind all the strong original creativity the Adelaide rapper has underneath his belt.

The Keys To The Cult House Collection is another strong example of Realizm's untouched skills on the mic and production within this release is especially for the hip-hop heads who crave samples built around obscure movie soundtracks that collide with old school hip-hop production (which sounds exactly like it came from the early nineties). These are songs that Realizm himself felt just didn't fit the vibe or feel of previous releases, but were too damn good to not be heard through a pair of fresh head phones. The unique flavorable remix of "Talk Your Shit" is a clever Elisa Waut loop that flawlessly conquers at the correct way of being super catchy without sounding commercial, yet the flows inside the track are lyrically gut piercing like a prison shank spilling out your guts. Guest rappers Everyday and Shotty Horroh really do shine on this remix! The directors cut of "Brimestone Delivery" features billboard charting artist Q-Strange and fellow Aussie lyrical slayer, Haunts. Found within the production of "Brimstone Delivery" are sounds from "Bring Me The Head Of The Machine Gun Woman' soundtrack" that will leave fans of horrorcore breathless, as if they were strangled inside an Italian Giallo horror flick. Another major highlight is the political anthem "Before You Seem Dead". The beat belongs inside the opening of a Hollywood action flick and what also makes it shine so bright is the rhyme schemes Realizm brings forth is just straight up raw! The final verdict; The world needs to wake up and stop sleeping on Realizim! lauffm Riew PUP - The Dream Is Over (Punk Rock) By Dustin Griffin- 5/5 Dragons There was a lot of excitement surrounding the release of PUP's self titled debut album. It seemed to come at a time when the punk rock world was in need a good swift kick in the ass.

For years now I've felt that punk has become one of the most uninteresting, uninspired breeding grounds for new music. Oh sure, you've got your sta !wart bands sticking around to release dependably solid music every few years. Bands like Bad Religion, Swingin' Utters and Good Riddance either reforming or sticking together to offer nostalgia boosting half hour blasts of classic new punk platters. But how many brand new punk bands are out there to get excited about, really? The passionate flame seems to have died out to a quiet flicker.
PUP's debut album seemed like an antidote to that. Here was a new band with a batch of catchy, thrashy, trashy; in your face songs that they played like their lives depended on it. For a minute there, it seemed as if punk's saviors' had come. But while nothing's really changed for punk music since PUP's debut dropped back in 2013 in Canada, 2014 in the States), at least they're finally back to offer a second swift kick to the music industry's nuts with their follow up "The Dream Is Over". Starting this album off with a song called 'If This Tour Doesn't Kill You, I Will' seems appropriate, especially to anyone who's been to one of their hyperactive shows. When I said this band plays their music as if it's the last thing they'll ever do, I meant it. The song starts off polite enough creeping up on an explosion of anger and gang vocals pleading ‘why can't we just get along?!' The song eventually blurs into the freight train that is 'DVP', one of the best songs on the album. This is the perfect example of what I love about this band. Salty but sweet. Impossibly catchy and impossibly heavy. Sloppy but with a great command of their instruments. Things don't slow down much over the next five songs. From the guitar frenzy of `The Coast' to the peppy depression of 'My Life Is Over and I Couldn't Be Happier', this is music for people whose lives have gone down the shitter and rather than wallow in their failures, opt instead to crack a beer and enjoy the moment. As dark as the material gets on "The Dream Is Over", it's never far from tongue in cheek. A good example is album closer 'Pine Point'. A reverie that is essentially about how nostalgia is only as good as you imagine it. And often times when you do reconnect with your cherished childhood narrative, it disappoints. A wolf in sheep's clothing. Maybe that's what they should have called this album. Tiger Army - V... (Punk/Rock) By Dustin Griffin- 4.5/5 Dragons For a minute there it looked as though Nick 13 was going to place Tiger Army in its grave. After Music From Regions Beyond came out and the band did a tour behind it, that's all we heard from them for a while. Nick released an impressive solo record in the first wave country vein, but aside from their annual Octoberflame show, Tiger Army went dark. Thankfully, as we now know, that was just a hiatus of sorts and nine years on from Regions, we have Tiger Army's fifth record, the appropriately titled V... The album starts off, as all their albums have, with an instrumental prelude. A minute long rallying cry to amp up the listener in anticipation of what's to come. Its fun and slides nicely into the first proper track 'Firefall'. 'Firefall' is a pretty straightforward psychobilly track and features all the things that make Tiger Army what it is: catchy, fast, smooth. With one exception: there is a woman or man) in the background with jaw dropping vocal capabilities, providing atmospheric soprano throughout this song and most of the other songs on this album as well. `Prisoner of the Night' is a nice toe tapper with some beautiful piano plunking away in concert with Nick's impressive voice and James Meza's solid drumming. Am the Moth' is a little different. It's a chugging, galloping rhythm that sounds like a steam train on a ghost track to hell. It's a great song. One of the best on the album. `World Without the Moon' takes advantage of some organ-like keyboarding to make its point, a little too enthusiastically at times. `Dark and Lonely Night' and 'Happier Times' are both slow moving confessionals that would've sounded right at home on Nick 13's solo album. `Devil Lurks on the Droadi is a fun, fast and dirty little tune very much in the psychobilly Tiger Army vein of past. The album's final few tracks are definitely less impressive than its first few. The album loses a little steam here and the more mediocre sounding 'Candy Ghosts', 'When The Tide Comes In' and 'Train To Eternity' become the album's first skippable moments. Thankfully, the album's closer ‘In the Morning Light' is an amazing, ethereal track that seems to float away as it moves along. It's the perfect 'let the credits roll' track and a nice way to cap off a mostly impressive album. Reminds me of 'End of the Weak' from the last Swingin' Utters album 'Fistful of Hollow'. I'm a big Tiger Army fan, so despite the fact that I don't like this album as much as their last couple, any new Tiger Army record is a cause for celebration. And what better way to celebrate than to catch them on one of their western Canadian tour stops at the end of the month. City and Colour Packs Rexall Place For a Memorable Night with Shakey Graves Article By Ashton Clemmer
City and Colour has been one of my favorites since I was a teenager, chalked full of angst, and dead set on the idea that "nobody understands me." Years later, and "wiser," I still find comfort in the heart-felt lyrics, inspired by life events, and paired with the sounds of an acoustic or semi-hollow guitar that open the flood gates for nostalgia. I've been fortunate enough to see front-man Dallas Green perform with both City and Colour, and his heavier, metal band Alexisonfire; two completely different atmospheres, however Green never fails to make each and every show memorable. June 10th, 2016 in Edmonton, AR at Rexall Place would be another night to add to the list. With supporting act, Shakey Graves a folk-blues artist, hailing from Austin, Texas, the evening was a showcasing of great writing within impactful lyrics, as well as an impressive display of musical talent. Shakey Graves may not be a household name today, but there's no doubt in my mind that he will be soon. Grave's entire set was so interactive, and so much fun, because of his incredible on stage presence as well as the infectious energy that he emits. During his time on stage, it became very clear that he was born to be a performer; a true natural in the art being a hell of a guitar player and having a really powerful voice. It's not uncommon for opening or supporting acts that aren't known on a large scale to play for a smaller audience earlier into the night, however, the energy and catchy tunes that this puts out pulled everyone in from the beer lines because they had to see what was going on With his name in lights behind him shining bright, his 16 VandalaMagazine.Com - July 2016
witty and inviting personality shone even brighter through each song he played. His songs were catchy enough that the next time his choruses came around, the crowd would belt the lyrics right back at him. Graves went on to address the crowd and tell them that Edmonton, AB was the first Canadian city he ever played and stated, "The first time I was here, I played the Edmonton Folk Festival, and now I'm playing in an arena!" Not holding back his excitement for the event or the fact that it was his first time playing in a hockey arena, and also thanking everyone for coming to and making it so memorable for him. After a brief intermission that seemed to take forever, City and Colour walked onto stage and after minutes of solid cheering from the audience, dove right into their setlist. In his live acts, Dallas Green's consistency from one show to the next is almost incomparable to anyone else in the genre and because of this, whenever he comes to town, whatever group he's with is able to pack an arena. Rexall Place was no different as the majority of the arena was filled with die-hard fans of the new and old music from City and Colour. The group played a great contrast of new and old material for the different generations of listeners that were in attendance for the night, starting mostly with newer songs from the most recent album "If I Should Go Before You" including "Woman" and "Northern Blues." Lifelong listeners of City and Colour were especially excited that the group didn't shy away from playing fan favorites like, "Fragile Bird" and "Save Your Scissors." Near the end of the show, Dallas addressed the crowd and said, "This next song, is for a friend..." and then performed his rendition of The Tragically Hip's - Bobcaygeaon; which acted as a tribute to The Hip's lead singer Cord Downie who was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year. It was a touching moment and fans showed their support by singing along with Dallas for the entire duration of the song. Both acts played well throughout large sets and left an impact on their fans that will surly bring them back their next time in town. The Edmonton show seemed to end too quickly and fans simply didn't want it to end as they cheered and chanted for more even after the houselights came on. I have to hand it to Shakey Graves, he not only impressed the hell out of me, but almost stole the show and I'd now call myself a fan, and supporter of his music. If you haven't checked him out yet, and love City and Colour, you'll truly dig his music. So the next time you have a chance to see either Shakey Graves or City and Colour live, grab a ticket, and go - you'll regret it if you don't.

Paul Mann An army of bonafide rock stars descended on the Fonda theater in Hollywood, Thursday, May 12th, for a benefit concert and auction, to raise money for the Adopt The Arts organization. The group co founded by ex Guns N Roses drummer and philanthropist Matt Sorum and Abby Berman, is a Los Angeles-based charity. The organization works to preserve arts programs in U.S. public schools. To raise awareness, Adopt the Arts honors individuals who've had a major impact on music culture and who inspire young musicians to follow in their footsteps. In an exclusive peek at the sound check before the show, it was apparent how immense the talent pool was, on hand for the unique event. The two main music luminaries set to be honored at the event, Glenn Hughes and Robin Zander, traded ideas and lead vocals as the sound check progressed. In addition to being long time supporters of Adopt The Arts, both singers had just recently been inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame. Hughes was inducted with Deep Purple and Zander with Cheap Trick, making the occasion a double celebration. The fascinating sound check served dual purposes. While technicians tuned the equipment to near perfect audio output, the veteran musicians showed an astonishing ability to morph into a cohesive band, practicing perhaps for the first time together, their set list for the evening. Some musicians even played the parts for musicians who couldn't make it to the sound check, like the truly iconic Black Sabbath bass player Geezer Butler. Butler was finishing up an appearance just a few miles away, at the Hollywood Palladium, making a historical announcement with Ozzy, members of Slipknot, and other heavy metal rockers. That occasion was the announcement of the one time Ozzfest and Knotfest combined, to be held in San Bernadino in September. Lead singer of Slipknot, Corey Taylor was also in attendance at both events. He arrived at the red carpet event, preceding the Fonda concert, just in time to dart out in front of the other performers who has assembled for a group photograph. Recognizing some of the press photographers from the Palladium event, he shouted out "I just saw all you people". I couldn't help myself and shouted back, "I didn't recognize you with a face," since he was sans his trademark Slipknot mask. He smiled and retorted "Yeah right its strange to see I really do have a face". Music fans who purchased VIP tickets were then allowed to mingle with the rockers on the red carpet and eat sumptuous appetizers for more than an hour. The Fonda show was organized by Matt Sarum and actress Jane Lynch. The organization has helped maintain music programs in the Los Angeles United School District in recent years, especially in underprivileged neighborhoods, and the proceeds raised by the show and auction helped further the goals of the program. Sarum acted as the master of ceremonies proclaiming at the outset, "We're starting in our own backyard here in Los Angeles, and we'll continue to adopt schools across the nation. We believe that music and art are universal and necessary languages that unite us all, regardless of our backgrounds." He then began to introduce a succession of musicians playing in no less then ten rotating incantations. The concert, with a break in the middle for an extended auction of rock memorabilia, altogether lasted more than four hours. After several opening rock covers and an ever changing line up, Hughes took over the lead vocal spot for an extended set. Sorum gave him a special award for long supporting the Adopt The Arts program and Hughes responded with a heart felt speech. "I don't have children but I have long supported this program, with my lovely wife, which is so important" He pointed to her in the front row of tables while thanking everyone for attending. He then proceeded to play some of his most classic songs, written with Deep Purple and other bands. Despite recently having undergone double knee replacement surgery, the 64 year old rocker exhibited some truly astonishing vocal skills, hitting octaves that few young rock singers could duplicate. He seemed to have no problem prancing about, hugging and kissing nearly every musician onstage and backstage to such an extent, that one wonders whether his wife might be amused or jealous. But it was all in good fun and showed just how much the performers were enjoying themselves, at the benefit. Hughes even played a mini acoustic set on guitar and sang with impeccable vocals. He ended the set brining back the band for a full rocking version of the Deep Purple classic "Smoke On The Water". Sorum staggered on stage at half time, to introduce an entertaining auctioneer, with an astonishing talent of rapid fire wordsmithing. An extensive auction ensued, with an array of signed rock guitars and rock art pieces raising a fat chunk of change. At one point, a guitar signed by Slash fetched a top bid of $11,000.00. Then the auctioneer brought out a second one offering it up for the same price to a second bidder. But the biggest cash infusion came at the end of the auction when the CEO of Coffee Bean presented a check of $50,000.00 to the organization. There were so many highlights, the second half of the concert it is hard to say what was the best performance. Corey Taylor notched up the excitement with his youthful energy and domineering stage presence. For many the next performance may have been the coup de Bras, with a hair raising cover of the Black Sabbath song "Paranoid". With Geezer on bass the band took the song into a new dimension. Even Sorum, got into the jam spirit, playing the end of the song standing up at his drum kit. Zander played the last set of the night leading the band in classic Cheap Trick anthems, like "Hello There," "Surrender," "Dream Police," and "I Want You to Want Me." He even played a mid-set solo performance of "The Flame," on acoustic guitar. The grand finale featured Zander and Hughes teaming up on an all-star version of "Come Together," where they were joined by surprise guest Joe Perry, with Steve Lukather, Will Lee, and Gilby Clarke. After singing an impromptu "Happy Birthday" to Billy Duffy, they closed out the night with Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll," featuring dual drumming by Matt Sorum and Chad Smith. They actually switched drum kits in the middle of the song. It was a great night for the rock performers and music fans in attendance, and for some lucky children in Los Angeles. Glenn Hughes will be doing a solo tour this summer and Robin Zander will be touring with Cheap Trick. The Mowgli's Bring Good Times To Santa Barbara Photo and Article By L. Paul Mann The Los Angeles based feel good pop group, The Mowgli's opened their summer tour with a surprise concert at Velvet Jones nightclub, on a sleepy Wednesday night, May 25th, in Santa Barbara. While most college kids were cramming for finals, many managed to stumble downtown for the upbeat showcase of this new band best described as being made up of Millennium flower children. The music and lyrics of the band purposely revolves around a feel good theme, more closely associated with the 1967 Summer of Love, than today's' ADD generation of Millennial slaves to cell phone apps. But the unique vocal harmonies and music structures that the band has created are anything but old school. As fresh as they sound, the band members are now six year veterans of musical recordings. The group is currently working with producer Mike Green (All Time Low, Paramore), on their as yet untitled third album that's due out in the fall of 2016 on Photo Finish Records. The band just released the album's first single "Freakin' Me Out," available now on iTunes. The six piece group features, Colin Louis Dieden on vocals,guitar and percussion, Katie Jayne Earl on vocals and percussion, Matthew Di Panni on bass and vocals, Josh Hogan on guitar and vocals, Dave Appelbaum (Former Santa Barbara resident) on keys and vocals, on percussion, guitar, vocals and melodica, and Andy Warren on drums, percussion and vocals. The Mowgli's' feel good music and message has resonated across the globe attracting a loyal fan base from all over the world. Their first album "Waiting for the Dawn," premiered at #4 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and gave the group their first hit song "San Francisco." Their sophomore album "Kids in Love" included the happy go lucky summer song "I'm Good," originally written for an anti-bullying campaign. Following Kids In Love, they released two more fan favorite singles, and "Room For All Of Us," a song released in support of the refugee-relief organization, International Rescue Committee. The show at one of Santa Barbara's premiere live venues, Velvet Jones, was an intimate experience with the band, feeling almost like a stay over slumber party at their house. The group, which would often switch up instruments and lead vocal duties, seemed to be gleefully enjoying their role as the feel good cheer leaders for the mostly college age crowd. Band members frequently bantered with audience members, engaging them one on one throughout the show. At one point they introduced keyboardist Dave Applebaum, as a former local Santa Barbarian eliciting a big roar from the crowd. He then took a turn as lead vocalist himself. The band has a sophisticated style that is easily overlooked in their happy go lucky approach to their sound and lyrics. But their musical structures often change mid tempo creating unique hooks and a fascinating new landscape of pop music. Judging from the response of the crowd at they're opening salvo summer concert in Santa Barbara, this band will continue to make loyal new fans and fresh music for quite some time to come. James Hunter Six Play The Lobero Theater Photo and Article By L. Paul Mann The James Hunter Six rolled into Santa Barbara on a sleepy pre memorial holiday Wednesday night, May 25th, to play a rocking set of R&B inspired must. The band of veteran musicians, led by the English singer and guitarist Hunter, drew much of their inspiration from classic American Soul music. The Grammy nominated singer impressed the iconic singer Van Morrison so much that, Morrison volunteered to sing on Hunters album, ,•Believe What I Say," in 1996. Hunter went on to perform on Morrison's albums as well throughout the 90's. New Orleans music master Allen Toussaint was also a fan of Hunter, and the band played one of Toussaint's tunes to honor the recently deceased singer. But it was not until Hunter's first solo release in the United States, his 2006 breakthrough album "People Gonna Talk," was nominated for a Grammy award for "best traditional blues album" at the 49th Grammy awards ceremony, that he became well known in this country. Since then Hunter has been hard at work hitting the road almost continuously with his crack band, playing to a loyal following of devoted fans. The band tore through riveting songs inspired by several classic American genres, including R&B, Rock and Roll, and Soul music. Hunter may be one of the most important links in the last twenty years, to the early hey days of these classic genres. His crack band features dual sax players, Lee Badau on baritone saxophone and Damian Hand on tenor saxophone, bringing awesome Jazz tinged musical battles to the mix. The band also features Jonathan Lee on drums; Andrew Kingslow on keyboards and percussion; and Jason Wilson on bass. The ninety minute show was punctuated with an impromptu gathering in the court yard in front of the historic Lobero Theater, featuring wine, beer and appetizers. A Night of Faygo Within Big Sky Montana Country! Article By Chad Thomas Carsten and Photo by Indi Reynoso Upon arriving in Butte, Montana locals in the area could immediately witness the Juggalos at peace with everyone! It was one big giant happy clown love family in the parking lot. Lots were sipping on Faygo (Holy shit! Faygo all the way out near the mountains?! Yes!) and whoop whooping in positivity towards one another A sign of respect. Juggalos invited any outsider into their circle to play hacky sack, sing their favorite ICP songs with each other, and shared food to those who were hungry that didn't have the extra cash to eat, but their stomach was growling too loud to be ignored. Glorious thing to witness, indeed! The stage was near a junkyard and a saloon, but in the distance you could see the beautiful mountains almost piercing the stratosphere. It was like Detroit and Montana were side by side with the junkyard and the mountains in the same view with Juggalos all around so extremely excited to see Insane Clown Posse, that everyone that were near Butte could literally feel their positive energy floating all around the wilderness from the excitement level. There is absolutely no way someone could not be smiling ear to ear from all the uplifting Juggalo spirit soaring throughout the Montana air that day! Washington states very own rapper "Illest Uminati", sure knows how to get a crowd fired up and ready to go buck wild all night long! The Juggalos immediately connected to his set and even chanted his stage name first song in, no joke! No garbage being thrown at this one! The energy Illest brought forth was straight up eye-popping on some Droopy D cartoon shit. The Washington rapper never stopped moving and his hyphy state of mind just kept the audience craving for more and more! Some ladies were practically drooling all over themselves. The alumni records peeps on stage with Illest were throwing tons of cd's in the air and people were rushing over frantically and tripping on each other just to get a Illest Uminati disc in their hands! This dude has conquered the true meaning of what it means to deliver a true outstanding hip-hop performance. If an Illest set can bring this type of rowdiness to kick things off, imagine Illest headlining his own tour? Crazy! Mr, Illest is destined for greatness no doubt, meaning that if Illest Uminati is in your area touring, be there! Psychopathic Records elite artist Young Wicked straight up murdered the stage! He murdered it so hard that there were probably chalk lines of mass bodies surrounding the stage after his set! The Juggalos loved every second of Young Wicked's performance. Lots were nodding their heads and the die-hard fans sang a long to every word through out his entire set. This cat has skill. And that skill includes a nasty razor sharp chopper status flow that contains syllables so emotionally raw, it be like Jamie Lee Curtis splitting your body in two with an axe on prom night while your face is gasping in horror at all the heads and limbs scattered about. But instead it's the power of Young Wicked's microphone power that's chopping you into lyrical pieces with a musical axe! Hard work does pay off in the end and Young is in a league of his own. A must see live! The Juggalos were starting to slowly become impatient, but the excitement level grew to a level beyond the stars. The anticipation level of not wanting to wait anymore was about to burst, like caps that belonged to over 200 bottles of Faygo that were somehow all shook up together for a month straight! That's how much the Juggalos couldn't wait to see they hero's the Insane Clown Posse take over the stage and become completely soaked in Faygo with them. The Duke of the Wicked (Violent 3) and The Southwest Strangla (Shaggy 2 Dope) finally emerged from behind a black curtain and people started screaming in pure joy in seconds at the sight of the wicked clowns immediately dominating the stage, during the opening of the Riddle Box. The joyful screams of the fans could probably be heard hundreds of miles down the road they were so loud and proud! Through out the full set everybody sang a long. audience knew all the lyrics contained within the Riddle Box. It's a top Juggalo classic, why wouldn't they know it?! The best part of the show was the simple fact the concert was held outside and Faygo 2 liters had no limits on how far they could fly. It was such a beautiful site to witness all the countless Faygo bottles touch the sky while spraying all over. On stage killer clowns jumped about and helped lend ICP a hand at drowning the crowd in root beer. Zombies danced around during "Headless Boogie" Michael Jackson thriller style. While during the necrophilia anthem "Cemetery Girl", a zombie girl keep grinding all over Violent jf making the track even more dementedly genius live thanks to the originality of the on stage theatrics ICP displayed. Shaggy 2 Dope seemed to go the craziest during the slaughter house remix of "Chicken Huntin", with the way he a mped up the number of 2 liters launching off together, while he jumped around on stage like a wild animal let loose to feed on it's prey. That prey being the stage! This is proof that Mr. 2 Dope truly loves being on stage, especially when "Chicken Huntin" hits! Violent 3 was at his most sinister when the murder fantasy revenge track "12" hit. J's charisma during "12" was so awe-inspiring and bone chilling, some mouths of the Juggalos were literally left hung wide-open long after the song was finished. 3's performance for "12" was also intense, yet geniusly mind blowing, as if a grenade went off deep within your skull and lyrical brain matter flew about. The major highlight of the show was the Faygo Armageddon, because seeing the big bright smiles of the VIP welcomed on stage was super duper priceless with how deeply thrilled they were being able to contribute to the magic that is Insane Clown Posse. Overall, the Riddle Box tour is more proof that the Insane Clown Posse is the best live rap act! Nuff said! Editorial Note: A last minuet after party was added and ICP played a second set that was Faygoless, but it was stuff full of wicked clown oldies and boy did the Juggalos go ape shit for that!

Kung fu Vampire is an underground champion when it comes to creative innovative hip-hop that has no set boundaries or limits. No one can match his style of originality! If you're in Canada when he tours the country in June, mark it on your calendars! You will be beyond pissed at yourself for not attending! How has San Jose influenced who you are as a recording artist today? Kung Fu Vampire: I've always been against the grain! This city definitely doesn't harvest that and it's a really big mixed culture. So many different cultures (skateboarding, punk rock, Latin) that have rose from that area. It's definitely played a part in me wanting to always do my own thing, but sometimes this city wasn't supportive of that. I like the uphill battle. I like the idea of doing some of this shit uphill and doing my own weird brand of industrial chopper style hip-hop. What brand of wine would best describe your personality the most and why? Kung Fu Vampire: Shit man, I'm a blend of everything! So, I would go with Chianti. A nice deep red wine blended with an OP taste. Like some type of red table wine with a blend of different grapes, because we're a whole blend of styles! For the unfamiliar where did you come up with Kung Fu Vampire? Kung Fu Vampire: The name stems from some cultural beliefs and backgrounds that I have and my love for the Asian culture and the art of Kung Fu. And what Kung Fu actually represents! The term means time and effort spent towards enlightenment. Which in latent terms it means someone who works his or her ass off to obtain one goal. I love that and I love the balance of it; Kung Fu being the yen energy and vampire being the yang. I've also always looked really young for my age when I was a teenager and I looked like a little kid. When I was twenty-one I looked like a teenager. I would sleep until noon and wouldn't leave the house until the night and would be up all night; and with my big search for immortality and longevity of health from the Vampire inside of me, there is a little bit of monster there, but mainly it's about being seductive and healthy. That's really that side of it. The way I got named that was from some friends of mine and I were in the back of my backyard talking about a Kung Fu movie and we discussed a vampire movie and then we were kind of like, "Oh! A Kung Fu and a Vampire movie!" and then talked about doing a project called "The Kung Fu Vampire Satire" and by the time I got around to working on that, it turning into, "Oh! That's just my name! This really works. This is who I am!" It represents my Yen and Yang and the balance. In the realm of fictional vampires what vampire based book or movie influenced your creativity the most? Kung Fu Vampire: I was never really influenced by any of those. I've always thought I've been really innovative and I can't just name myself something that doesn't really exist, otherwise I would've probably been like one of those dude's with a name that doesn't really mean anything. So, I had to make it something tangible. Kung Fu and vampire fit the most. But after we started that there were things that I was instantly attracted to and Marvel's Blade would be the one that I like the most. That's the storyline that I relate to. I would actually jokingly say that's he's the only other Kung Fu Vampire. I love Blade, man! I need to go back and read everything that I can! What inspired you to write the song "Slice of Life" and how does it reflect your own personal life? July 2016 - VandalaMagazine.Com 43
Interview. Mome over estatil Kung Fu Vampire. That's a good question, man! The whole "Look Alive" and "Slice of Life" concept is me kind of just barely standing at this point. I got some pretty serious injuries and the Kung Fu Vampire business and brand has been growing further than what I can handle on my own. So, I just kind of felt like I was feeling so alive, but then feeling dead at the same time. Again, it's back to the balance thing. So, for me that's where I was with "Slice of Life" and I was just sacrificing a lot, And I've been sacrificing a lot for my art and I think any true artist that puts out that level of art, that's really good quality; not saying that I'm at the level yet, but I want to get to that. But artists like Prince, Michael Jackson, and David Bowie, artists on that level, that's where the art is just perfect! And I think you have to sacrifice a lot to be that. Like 2pac, guys who sacrificed their lives to make sure their art was f*cking amazing! Any behind the scene details you'd like to share behind the music video for Slice of Life? It looks to be from the start of the 1900's or even further back? Kung Fu Vampire: Good job, buddy! It takes place around 1900 to 1910 and everything in the video is true to that exacta era! So there is nothing in there that is showing anything from modern times at all! If you didn't really watch, you'd think it could've been shot then and you wouldn't even know. It's a prequel to all my other videos ("Love Bites" and "Nightmare Walkin"). My boy Brandon, who lives down the street from me, he killed that video! He put his entire heart and soul into it. It's a story that I don't want to reveal and it's a very deep story! It's going to take people a lot of watches to really understand it. Matter of fact, we did a contest on Facebook to see if anyone could guess the storyline and nobody did! But a couple of people got really close! And that's only because it's part of the story and it will be released when we put out more of these videos. It's a long story! It all relates to the red box that was giving to me by the young boy in "Love Bites" and then in "Nightmare Walkin", the red box was given to (rapper) Tech N9ne by me. And in Slice of Life you will see that it was taken in a photo shoot by spirit figures and it was used on a ritual site. That's all I can pretty much tell you, without giving away the story. But we are excited to reveal it to say the least. What was it like working with Lex The Hex Master for the track "Little Girl Big Mouth"? Kung Fu Vampire: Lex sent that verse back real quick and we live on opposite sides of the ocean. I'm on the Pacific and he's located near the Atlantic. I thought he did really well! Matter of fact, I thought he did better on that verse than he did on his entire E.P. I think he smashed it! I just felt like I wanted to help him catch a buzz! I love my Majik Ninja Entertainment family; those guys are my people! I wanted to help him get his buzz up and then it doesn't hurt me at all either, ya know! I just wanted to show him some love and I thought his voice would sound good on that track and I know people have been talking about him and I thought it would be great to continue that! He was fast and efficient and he killed it! Hopefully you and Lex can get a tour together going! Kung Fu Vampirc That be dope! We might do that. You never know. Maybe this Fall or something. I've always got tricks up my sleeves. What stuck out to you the most when working on the song "Paranormal" with Rhapture, Malaria, & Samson Samson for the "Underground Unleashed" compilation? Kung Fu Vampire: Ah, yea! Those guys are dope! If I could remember my first line, I could rap the whole verse for you. [Laughs] But I love that track, That's cool that you found out about it. It's always nice to see collaborations that I do for people, with people, get noticed and I make sure it gets out there and let people see it, ya know! A lot of times I do collabs for people and I'm not cocky, but I smash on em; most don't have there lyrically game up. love that way better, man! I'm not cocky at all! I want to be pushed. I want my lyrical boundaries to be pushed! I want to be competitive and I want the people that I work with to be awesome and sound great! Then I feel comfortable with promoting the track for them. It's cool to be proud of your shit, but I prefer everybody to smash it equally! I think a lot of people on my new record smashed me. I think they killed their verses more than I did. I think I do a lot better when I do guest appearances with other artists. But when I do my own shit, (when I invite guests) the guest appearances killed it! That's just me being honest. I think they really shined! You will be touring Canada all month long with Dirtbag Dan! What are you looking for to the most returning to Canada? Kung Fu Vampire: Just the good food and the good people. We want to see a lot of people come out to the shows and really enjoy this unique amazing thing we put together, man! We don't just come out there and rap. You're getting stand up comedy, live battle rap, a live show with a full band, with lights and a lot of action! So, you know, I just really want the fans to show support and get out there and see what we really bring to the table! I feel like we bring a lot to the table and it's our time now to get that spot light, bro! We just want to be in front of people so they can see what we're bringing to the table. I think once we do that it's on! We're going to get their respect! Any memorable stories you'd like to share about visiting Canada in the past? Kung Fu Vampire: I just think it's funny that people always say, "Watch out for the moose!" and every Canadian friend that I ask; nobody has ever seen one! I don't doubt that they exist, must be farther north. [Laughs] You and Dirtbag Dan seem to have a great friendship that's been building with nothing but maximum positivity. What's the story behind you guys first meeting and what made exactly made you two connect so great in the first place? Kung Fu Vampire: We're both independent grinders from the same city, where I think there are a lot of great emcees, but not a lot of people doing the grind like us. To be able to bring him out with me is just a blessing, because I've always wanted to bring San Jose artists out on the road. I've been touring six or seven years and it doesn't make sense financially to bring a bunch of San Jose artists with me, as big as a heart that I have, we're not at that level. So, to have someone like Dan, who I'm friend's with, who has skills/brings something to the table that has fans in Canada; it only makes sense! He's going to have fun and we're going to have fun with him! So that's what it all came down to. "Who do I want to roll with for a month with a Van and trailer?" Dirtbag Dan! He's one man! It's like when Wrekonize (Strange Music) and I did a co-headlining tour together. It was Dan, Wreck and I with G-Mo Skee. Those guys are all super cool cats! I would roll with all those guys again. We chose well. We got lucky with those guys! Is it true that you and Esham will be working on a song together in the near future? Hung Fu Vampire: Well, we talked about it! We're thinking about doing it! So, we'll see! He could be on the new record. You never know! Can you shed some light on what your upcoming new album "Look Alive" will sound like in terms of sound and production? Any guest features? Hung Fu Vampire: Well, my sound is all over the place. It's just all over the place stylistically. There is some really happy stuff on there and there is a little bit of dark stuff. I definitely don't make horrorcore music. I just make a variety of hip-hop styles. I do have a collab with Lex The Hex Master, as people have heard with the first single. Twiztid is on the album; Brotha Lynch Hung is on the album; iMayday! of Strange Music is on the album; to name some of the big named collabs I've really enjoyed working with on the record. I got a part two to a very famous song of mine coming out on the album too. It's some exciting stuff! People are really going to be stoked about it when they hear it. What would you like to accomplish with Hung Fu Vampire in the next 10-20 years? KAin Fu Vampire: Shit man, hopefully you see me in movies by early 2017. A lot of it will be me playing myself as Kung Fu Vampire. But honesty, we want to reach that Rob Zombie status! I really want to reach that level! I don't really want to start this whole fan-base thing; a lot of people are really hung up on that. I just want to get on that level where people love and respect me for my own music and for what I do. I want them to follow me for me, not because I'm part of some movement. I want my own movement to be recognized and appreciated and take it to that next level! I'd love to be playing with guys like Rob Zombie! I want to attain a status based on merit, not based on having money. I got a lot of time left in me. I got 15-20 years left of touring, so I want to make sure that we do the best we can. I want to build up this fan-base properly so we can keep doing it! Hopefully the fans understand that coming to the shows and picking up a little bit of merch are the most important. That's going to keep us traveling the world! Upstroke Babylon Ever since exploding onto the scene with the hyper energetic song 'Liberty' a couple of years ago, The Interrupters have seen a quick and easy rise to among the best new punk bands to come along in a long time. Mixing elements of punk, ska and reggae into their heady wall of sound, they're fun to listen to and fun to see live. Their new album 'Say It Out Loud, out at the end of June, takes what they did with their debut and steps it up a notch, musically and lyrically. We spoke with singer Aimee (Allen) Interrupter and guitarist Kevin Bivona about the band, the new album and the current media sensation that is American politics. I know this is a cheesy question, but this a really fun album to listen to, so was it as much fun to make it as it is to listen to? Kevin: It was super fun. In fact, we kind of had a rule when we were making this album that if at any point, whether writing the song, or recording it, if we stopped having fun, we would scrap the song and do another one. It was the most fun I've ever had making an album. Aimee: Me too. And I read somewhere that you split your time between Tim Armstrong's studio and Travis Barker's studio, is that right? Kevin: Yeah, I mean we're super lucky because I do a lot of other studio stuff with Travis, so I'm at his studio quite a bit. And when it came time to make the record he basically said hey if you guys want to make it here, that's totally cool. And he's got a great Neve board there. It's a good vibe. And we had access to his whole drum arsenal, his drum tech Daniel's a good friend of ours. So he hung out and helped us get drum sounds. So I definitely think we stepped up the drum sound on this record. Aimee: Yeah it's all live. Kevin: All the tracks were recorded live off the floor as far as the instruments go. And
then for vocals we took a lot of the tracks to Tim's studio and we worked pretty fast there. But I mean we're just lucky that those guys got our backs and are friends of ours, because it made the recording process really in house and really fun. My next question was going to be how much of it was recorded live, because it definitely has a live off the floor sound and feel to it. Kevin: Yeah so basically we're all there for the recording. Tim and the four of us. We play the songs in a circle with acoustic guitar to figure out the arrangement. And then we just roll tape and go in there and try it. And that's where it's really great having Tim there, because Tim is great at arrangements and just getting it right, the sound right, the first time. Then we had a party at our house and that's when we overdubbed the vocals, did all the gang vocals for a lot of the tracks. Any special guests? Kevin: Yeah we had guys from Less Than Jake over, we had Warren from The Vandals over, and then a bunch of our friends in town who are musicians came over to sing on stuff. Aimee: Rancid, on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Loyal'. 52 Vandalarvlagazine.Com - July 2016
That's cool cause that song, 'Loyal' has the feel of some of the stuff on the last Rancid record and in particular the song 'Honour Is All We Know'. Aimee: Yeah that's funny because I actually worked on that record and I play organ in Rancid when they tour, so we're around them so much, their influence definitely rubs off on us a lot. And yeah you definitely hear it in 'Loyal' and the way the bass line walks. And that was kind of the reason we asked them to sing backups on that. We got all four of them singing backup on all the choruses. Tim Armstrong not only produced this record, he's also on the song 'Phantom City', he also owns the label Hellcat, that the record is coming out on. I can imagine his friendship and mentorship has been pretty integral to the shape this band has taken over the years. Kevin: Having him in there when we're making the records is a super important part, but just since we've had this band, we take almost everything to him. Whenever we need advice about something, whether it's something legal, or touring wise, or inter-band stuff. He's got so many years in this business and we're just fans of all his records on top of it. So hearing his advice, we're lucky to get it and it's always really important to us. How have the last two years, since your debut album came out, informed the writing of this record? Kevin: I think just all of the touring we've done. Because when we did our first record, we hadn't played live. I mean we started the band, made the record and then played live. So this time around, we know what our strengths are live and we're able to bring those into the recording room. Aimee are you used to touring with three stinky dudes at this point? Aimee: You know what, I'm probably stinkier than any of them (laughs). The twins are such clean freaks. Just neat and clean and sanitized. And Kevin and I are kind of the dirty kids in the van (laughs). One of the ways I feel like you guys really stepped it up on this record is in the lyrical content. A lot of these lyrics feel very real. 'She Got Arrested' for example, feels real. Was this based on a real person, a real story, or was it ripped from the headlines or what? Aimee: Well, there's a lot of people in my family that have experienced domestic violence, myself included at one point. And that song is kind of like a fantasy song in a way. A combination of all the people I know and my own experience. Just kind of fantasizing about if things had turned out differently and playing that out Kevin: And It doesn't end well. InL ieriviiemv. Upstroke Babylon Aimee: It's a story as old as time and it needs to be told. But it helps that the story is told to an upstroke, funky beat. It gives it a positive note. Light at the end of the tunnel. Aimee: Yeah it is a phoenix rising from the ashes kind of thing. The victim became the victor. Even though she went about it all wrong, she still took back her power, you know? Another great song is 'Media Sensation'. I'm assuming this song is touching on the current circus that is the political climate in America. Aimee: (Laughs) Yeah. Kevin: And the media circus that surrounds it. Yeah and the unfortunate thing about American politics is that there always seems to be a circus aspect to it. So although this song in particular is very topical, it's also timeless in that it will probably still feel relevant three presidential elections down the road. Aimee: Thank you. Kevin: Thank you. It's funny because we were already messing around with that idea before the circus got really crazy. And we actually had other lyrics in the chorus that we weren't very happy with. But it's funny because you say it's very current, we had parts in that song before all this was happening. A year and a half ago, but we didn't have that media sensation part until everything was getting crazy. Right around last fall when all the debates started. Aimee: And you couldn't turn the TV on without everyone having an opinion. Kevin: And we're all about having an opinion and a right to it, but not when the media is dictating it. Well it's the age of clickbait, right? Clicks on web pages and likes and shares on social media are currency these days. Kevin: You said it. Aimee: Yeah you said it, it's all about the money. Aimee, how does writing and playing in a punk band differ from the stuff you did as a solo artist? Are you more at home with punk than with some of your more laid back stuff from previous projects? Aimee: Well I've spent more of my career in punk, doing punk, than that other stuff. Even when I was a teenager, my first band was a punk rock band. And that acoustic reggae album for example, was a departure. Something to play at the beach. But I've been screaming over the same three chords for a really long time. Well you've got a great thing going on here in The Interrupters, you bring a great edge to the sound of the band. Aimee: Thank you. I feel like, with Tim being our producer, and the rest of the Interrupters, that when I do a take, it takes a lot of convincing for them to let me do a second or a third one. Cause they're like 'it's awesome, it's great. Let's go on to the next one.' And I'm like 'nol I can do it better'. And I'm always outvoted. To keep with the urgency and the energy going. teris Kevin, you've worked with a ton of great bands over the years. Whether producing or engineering or playing with them. What itch does The Interrupters scratch that working with those other bands in those other capacities might not? Kevin: You
know, I've played in bands since I was eleven years old and grunge was really big, I was in a grunge band. And then punk bands. I was in a ska band in high school and a reggae band after that. So I've always loved playing live. And then becoming studio savvy and working with other bands, I've found great satisfaction in helping people achieve their vision. And continue to do that no matter what happens with The Interrupters. But I feel like this band is achieving my vision in a way. And I guess that's the itch that it scratches. It's something that I can call my own. And being able to say 'hey, my band's playing this Saturday', you know? I've always loved that my whole life.

Some Of Us Really Need That EDM Festival Life! An Interview with Jay Gordon
Interview Jay Gordon helped define the 1990's modern rock era with Orgy. The brilliant sounds within Orgy's unique industrial movement, pushed beyond the normal boundaries of rock roll and took it into a completely original dark territory that had nu-metal kids weeping in joy for months on end! That originality still thrives today within Orgy's latest Talk Sick ES? A release no Orgy fan should skip. Your music hunger pains will be gone for good once you press play and listen to Talk Sick all the way through, full blast, over and over again until your ears finally bleed out in astonishment. Can we discuss your early childhood and how you developed your own musical taste? Jay: I grew up in the music business. My dad was a manager and I was just kind of around whatever was happening in San Francisco growing up. San Francisco had a lot of different flavors. So we were in the breeding ground for a lot of new things, but not just new, old things too. What's your average day like when not touring and away from music? Jay: I'm never away from music! When I'm not touring, I'm working in my studio or working with a solo artist or even making EDM music. You just finished touring with Filter! How was the experience overall? Jay - It was a tour. [Laughs] We were support slot for the tour and it was good and the tour was successful. Everybody did pretty good! It was cool! That's it, really. How much has Richard Patrick influenced you as a recording artist? Jay: I definitely bought the first Filter record (Short Bus) and I think a lot of people in my area bought the first record. I thought it was cool. I don't sound similar to him musically or stylistically, but he has his own vibe and I have mine. I guess my influences came from other places. Musically speaking, my influence would be more Ministry and vocally, I would say more towards the Bowie lane, somewhere around there. What do you like most about tour the touring life? Jay: Definitely performing in front of people I've never played in front of before. Playing in front of large audiences with big stages really is my thing. You have a lot of room, so that works out great! I like the small club vibe too, because sometimes it's better to get that up close personal vibe. What do you anticipate the most when performing live? Jay: We strive for the audience's reaction. I try to focus on staying out of everyone's way and not killing myself up there. [Laughs] For the Orgy fans that may have overlooked the newest Orgy E.P., why should fans give the Talk Sick E.P. a real deep listen? Jay: I think it's because it's not that crazy of a departure from where we were years ago to where we are now. Its definitely an upgrade in a lot of areas. I'm not blown away at the way that some of the vocals were recorded. I would have done things differently, as far as how they were shaped into the mix and stuff like that. But overall I'm happy with our first real record together as a new band). I think you'll hear a lot more of that upcoming. I think it'll just get better from here. A lot of people really do like the record. It's definitely different. Sonically speaking, there's a lot of things that I'm fixing from that record till now. Not that's it's broken to met there are a lot really cool things on that record. There's some great production on there from some of the outside people that we brought in and it'll catch on! Taprimiew? ÂŽ,rigy record are up incoming. So, when those guys get huge, then you'll see why it all works. There is more of a new fan base coming up. Not that I don't want the old ones too (I love all Orgy fans, they're all good!), but it definitely is going to capture some new people. You just gotta keep an open mind and kids nowadays have way more of an open mind! Entropy is your next full length! What kind of content and sounds can fans expect within the next LP? Jay: It's definitely going to be different in a lot of ways and the more things change the more they stay the same. Orgy is gonna evolve with me always, because whatever I'm into is what Orgy's going to be. I like to keep an open mind and I'm listening to a lot of really heavy stuff right now, so we'll see if that gets added in there too, ya know?! How did the album title Entropy come about for it's title? Jay: It was just something that popped in my head and I kinda just went with it. It may not even be called that in the end. But I think right now it's a good working title. We'll see what happens. What do you want to accomplish with Entropy/the next record? Jay: I want to reach a much larger audience! I want to play a lot of these big festivals with
all those DJ guys, which is where all the people have gravitated towards. I want to jump into that Prodigy or Pendulum range. I'd like to get in there and just feel it! I love those kinds of shows and it would just be really cool to be able to do that kind of stuff! Like, Electric Forest? Jay: Yes, exactly! You've got the right idea! When are you and Jonathan Davis (Korn) going to rock shit on a track together again? Any fond studio memories you'd like to share between you two? Jay: I love Jon! I don't know. I haven't seen him in a long time. I give him a message every now and again, and he responds and that's about it. There are a lot of fun moments/memories in the studio with Jonathan. He's a great guy! We've had a lot of fun. He's really the reason that my band was able to get out there. Him and David Silveria were really the reason why Orgy could be brought out. They threw us the bone and brought us with them (Korn). I'm pretty grateful for Jonathan. Can we discuss the song "Slept So Long"? Jay: I had a lot of fun on the Queen of the Damned Record. That was awesome! He wrote all that, Jonathan did. I just sang what he wanted me to and it worked out really good! They wouldn't let Jon do it for the movie soundtrack and so he gave a bunch of his friends the opportunity to sing those songs (featured on the soundtrack), so they could put the record out physically, but inside the movie he sang the actual songs. Slept So Long is Jonathan's song through and through. I love his version of course. That's what made me like the song to begin with. Any advice to vocalists just starting out that you'd like to share? What not to do on tour? Jay: Prepare yourself for the road. Singing five to six nights in a row is not an easy thing to accomplish by any means. Some nights with Filter there were eight nights in a row before a day off. Get your stamina up and get your vocal game right. Don't over-exert your voice too much or you'll lose it. No underage chicks! That's a pretty important one for all bands! It' s Time to Turn the Crank Again! An Interview with Shaggy 2 Dope! Interview By Chad Thomas Carsten
°~t4si rine to Tura the Ewa r .l Agaim Detroit Michigan's very own Insane Clown Posse runs an underground hip-hop empire that can't be touched by anyone. Psychopathic Records deserves to keep shining! Everyone that's with the label (past or present) that runs beneath the streets worked their ass off towards every bit of success the label has achieved! For over 20 drenched in Faygo years the wicked clowns have sold out shows across the states continually and the Juggalo culture just keeps on getting bigger and show no signs of going away anytime soon. Juggalos support anything underground to the fullest! After over a decade, ICP are finally returning to Canada to perform the legendry Riddle Box album in its entirety] Don't miss out Canada! Shows have been selling out! If you had a to choose a Faygo beverage to describe the 1995 era of Insane Clown Posse, what would it be and why? Shaggy; I would say probably orange pop! Because back in 1995 we were definitely throwing lots of Faygo then, but that was before we had learned that the sugar inside the pop/soda ruins all the mechanics in the microphones, speakers, lights, and what not. This was before we later switched to diet root beer. Then learning after, that diet root beer flies the best and sprays the best! That's usually what we use nowadays because of these two reasons; it sprays and flies crazy good and the sugar inside the diet don't break the equipment. In 95, we weren't really doing tours. We would do a couple a shows in a row over the weekend in the Michigan area, but we would never do two to three month long tours, so we didn't have to really worry about the miss breaking. But now when you do shows every night, it's your gear; you don't want to break the shit every night. You figure out different tactics on how to keep your shit going and keep it alive! But 1995, I would say either orange or red pop. Insane Clown Posse is finally able to return to Canada after over a decade! What are you looking forward to the most returning to Canada? Shaggy; We are so geeked! It sucks so bad (in reference to not being able to return in so long) because like, we'll being playing shows and having meet & greets in shit in Northern America, ya know! And a lot of people from Canada will come down and be like, "Why don't you guys ever come to Canada?" At first it used to be real embarrassing to say, because straight up it all boils down to criminal shit. *Laughs* Straight up. Especially ever since 9/11 happened they've cracked down hard to come into Canada. When I was younger it was easy to come over to Canada. Now you need passports and all that craziness, which I get. which is also insane too, because we've been to Australia a few times since then and they don't crack down as hard on American criminals. Don't get me wrong, I'm not like a criminal like that I'm a real nice Peking guy, but I've got a bad criminal record. There is no more probation or nothing like that. Been off of that for a long time. Completely off of that! It costs a lot of money to the ministry in Canada for us to get in there with the work papers and all that. But we are so geeked to be back and really looking forward to performing for the Canadian Juggalos! We'll be playing new cities and seeing new faces, it will be like it's brand new for us to be there again! And it will be summer time. That's a plus too! How do you feel about the Riddlebox turning 20 years old? That has to be a crazy feeling! Shaggy: It is nuts! When you sit back and think about it, it really is crazy but it don't seem like twenty years to me. I guess it kinds goes with the saying like when you're 66 VandalaMagazine.Com - July 2016
ImbeRview, Sloaggy 2 Aope of Imsane @l amp Posse a kid and you're talking to your parents and they say, "When you get older time goes by fast!" and you're just like, "Shut the f*ck up! I'll live forever!" But it's true! Once you get older, shit goes mad fast. Just like when we talk about shit that happened four years ago, it seems like it just happened yesterday. So to me, it doesn't seem like twenty years ago. But when you sit back and look at it, it's like, "Damn man!" F*ck! I was like twenty/twenty one years old when we did that shit. It's a reality check. I don't know if I'm using the right word or not, but it's kinda humbling that we've been doing it for so long and that what we do is still appreciated. We never gave up our hustle/grind. We've been at it for so long and constantly on the same grind, that it doesn't seem like it, but it's been that long. But the crazy part is we're still doing stuff as hard as we used to. We never stopped! We feel like right now we're in our prime. Back then it seemed like we were in our prime. But now it still seems like we are in our prime, because we're doing just as much, if not more shit, ya know?! It's a weird feeling. We've got so many years to go! There's no plan of retirement. We're doing this until we physically can't no more! I've got a step dad who is 72 and still works. I'm going to be doing this shit Rolling Stones style, but pass that! We'll be in wheel chairs out on stage or Forest Grump style in leg braces still performing out there rocking shit! Think it will be beyond Ozzy? Shaggy: Way beyond that! Because we're not dope fiends! Out of all of your releases what exactly makes Riddle Box so special to Juggalos and why do think the album continues to stand the test of time? Shaggy: It's crazy because that's not necessarily a hundred percent true. Riddle Box is special to a lot of Juggalos. So, to a lot of people that is true. It depends on the person. A lot people feel that way towards "The Great Milenko" or "The Jeckle Bros." A lot people feel that way towards pretty much any record that we came out with. It depends upon when people started listening to us, I guess. If people started listening to you when that specific record came out, they're going to hang on to that record the hardest! But the cool part is, once somebody starts listening to us they seem to want to go back and learn all about us and listen to all our back shit. We got a lot of youngsters coming out that love the Riddle Box, but they might like something better. Riddle Box was our first national record that we put out on Jive Records. Even though they didn't really put it out nationally, they just put it out in Detroit. But we took it and bought promotional vans and just started going across the country and promoted it ourselves. And where we promoted it, it became a hit. So a lot of people were exposed to the Riddle Box first outside of the Michigan era. That may be why it holds such a big place to some people, because that was the first time people on the West Coast/South/Canada or whatever had heard Insane Clown Posse, because that was the first record that we actually put out nationally that wasn't just locally in Michigan. For you personally, what song do you cherish the most from Riddle Box? Shaggy: That's like asking me which one of my kids are my favorite. *Laughs* I'll tell you what though, we had did the Riddle Box show for Juggalo Day 2013 in Detroit and I actually was just watching the footage of that last night.; I think performance wise, I love performing the song "01' Evil Eye" I just like doing that on stage a lot, I don't know why. As far as picking a favorite song in general, that is kinda impossible. Riddle Box is the record that the "Chicken Huntin Slaughter House Remix" was on and we've been playing that song live ever since that record came out! real big song for us. But me personally as far as performance wise), I like doing "01' Evil Eye". Before the Riddle Box show we had never actually performed that song live until then. I was watching that footage and I was like,"Wow! I really like doing that song!" [Laughs] In honor of the 20th anniversary of Riddle Box Insane Clown has decided to re-release the Riddle Box sampler on cassette. What brought forth the decision to re-release it on cassette? Shaggy: It's weird because cassettes are coming back a little bit, man! I first started noticing that a couple years ago when we were at (I think it's called) Atomic Records in LA and it's a huge record store! As you know there aren't a lot of those left, so it was crazy to see. Myself, I noticed there was a lot of new stuff on cassette. Like local artists that were just putting new records out on cassettes. I was like, "What the f*ck!" Then we just started noticing a lot of the more known artists are putting stuff out on that format. I don't know if is because of the vinyl comeback or what the deal is, but it's fresh to see. Plus, it's just an awesome collector's item. Every now again someone comes through the VIP/in-store signing and they'll be excited about having an actual cassette. It just a cool vibe in itself, I think! Are there any more unknown leftover behind the scene details on when Insane Clown Posse first wrote The Riddle Box that you'd like to share? Shaggy; It's all in the 20th anniversary deluxe release that we just recently put out. There is actually like a breakdown of the whole recording process inside the booklet. I remember it was just such a different time with our producer Mike E. Clark. We did that record in a basement, not in a studio, but in a basement! Mike Clark always had studio space, but this time he said, "F*ck It!" and put all his equipment in the basement and made a studio around it down there. Studio became life! We slept till like 1 p.m. and would go to the basement studio and stay in their till three in the morning every day. Our personal life was the studio, but we loved it! If we didn't love it, we wouldn't have been down there the whole time. That was before we all had kids and families. That was our whole life. Outside of that there was nothing that meant anything to us, besides recording! What kind of content can Juggalos expect with your upcoming solo release? Shaggy: It's just about to be like raw hard-ass hyped shit! It's not like in a form of a joker's card or nothing like that. It's just going to be an awesome record just to bump with your homies! Nothing over produced, just a nice f*cking solid raw-ass record! Can you briefly describe The Gathering to someone who has never attended and why they should attend? Shaggy: That's a pretty tough thing to describe briefly. *Laughs* For a Juggalo, that's like the Mecca for Juggalos. But you can go to The Gathering with no money and you're not going to go hungry. People will look out for you. You're going to have the best time of your f*cking life! You are going to meet new friends, maybe lifelong friends. From the time you get there, from the time you leave, you will have such a f*cking blast! Its 24 hours a day! Even if you're not a Juggalo your wig will be blew back with joy! It's not what everyone thinks. Everyone thinks that if you're not a Juggalo you're going to get your ass kicked. That's far from the real truth. The real truth is, it's all love! We welcome all sides that aren't Juggalo. We want people see the kindness and family spirit of the Juggalos and what it's all about being Juggalo. Woodstock hippie motherf*ckers, but it's a weekend of peace. No fights. No one stealing shit from each other; everyone's just chilling out having fun, like they never had before. If you meet anyone that has gone before they will say that was best weekend of their lives. And when someone finally goes for the first time they'll be like, "Why have I never been to one before?!" and attend every year. It will change your life. Nothing will live up to it, I promise you that! When Juggalos tell you that you have saved their lives, how do you approach that situation? Shaggy: It's hard, man! It's really hard. You try to hear them out and listen to their story and try to (I don't know if that's the right word) sympathize with them. When they show off an ICP tattoo, how do you thank somebody enough for that? When you do VIP/ In-store signings, it's really emotionally hard to get through sometimes when you listen to people's stories. You've got grown-ass men crying. Its mind boggling crazy! You know you've put so much work over the years and to realize that you've helped people out like that is an amazing feeling! Its just like Justin Bieber for instance; he stopped doing VIP at his shows, because he couldn't handle it anymore. It became too emotional. For him, I'm sure it is a whole lot different than ours with having girls screaming in your face for hours, but I can understand that because the VIP gets emotional in general, sometimes. It's f*cking hard to deal with on both ends. Not only for Juggalos, but for us as well because they're so awesome! And it's still cool as shit to do that. We really respect Juggalos! We feel like we owe it to people to do stuff like that. We are the same people as our fans. We're f*cking scrubs, ya know! Any advice to artists just starting out on their first national tour? Shaggy: Partying is fun, but don't take it too far. Some people don't come back from that shit. Get as much skin as you can. *Laughs* Touring is what you make out of it. Imberview. Sbriomg As Ever Kirk Windstein is a very wise dude, and he's been around the block a time or two. he's the kind of old school New Orleans dude who lays it all out on the table and has a lot to share. Listening to him reflect on all Crowbar has done over the ears and the 20th anniversary of the Broken Glass record was an honor. So how are you? Kirk: Doing well! How's the road been thus far? Kirk: Good! We've been doing really well on merch so we're pretty happy with that. For us it's kind of like a studio break. All the music is done for the new record I just need to sing on them. We haven't been on tour since December which is a lot for us. So we decided that we would just do a little three week hop, take a few weeks off to do vocals and then go to Europe. How does it feel to tour on a record that came out 20 years ago? Kirk: It's really cool. Although we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of the record we aren't only playing stuff from Broken Glass we are just doing a few extra tunes. We haven't gotten a lot of negativity but people expected us to do the full album. A band like Iron Maiden have a two hour set and they can do that. We have 10 records out though and for us to do 85% of our set off of Broken Glass that would piss some people off. We just wanted to celebrate that record, it's one of our best, and we're doing the actual song Broken Glass which we had never done live. We had no rehearsals before the tour, we just loaded straight from the studio. For the first gig we did Broken Glass four or five times during the sound check, it was a little rough that night, but it had never been played! I had to relearn it! It's getting better every night and we want to keep it in the set. How are you compensating for Phil's vocals? Kirk: I feel like he didn't do that much at all on the track. It was mostly textural stuff, there were no standout lines. So we didn't need to really make up for that. So tell me about the new record... how does it sound compared to Symmetry In Black? Kirk: I've been listening to a lot of the older records. So since we've broken a lot of ground with the last few records and brought in new elements to the sound this one was meant to be more meat and potatoes and old school in feel. 27 years later it's all about big heavy riffs, not so much stretching the boundaries. It's more just straight Crowbar, more what you'd expect from the early days of the band. I enjoyed bringing new elements into the sound, but at the same time... we did that. It's time for us to do a kickass no frills Crowbar record. One of the things that really impressed me on the last two records is how you've started to address your spirituality, are we going to hear more of that? Kirk: I've only done 3-4 lyrical ideas thus far. I usually write the lyrics the day I sing or the night before. It's easier for me to just have one song or phrasing in my head and spend a few hours doing that in the studio. I'll just tell the engineer which song we will be singing so then I can write my ideas down all day. Our engineer will make a copy of the lyrics and I will have my notebook so I can take notes. It works out well. I'm not intimidated by the fact that I don't really have lyrics yet. I also do the vocal melodies the day of. I come up with the phrasing and melodies or whatever. A lot of times I will just go for it and talk with the engineer. I've really taken my singing a lot more seriously on the last few records, especially on the last record. The last two records are the only two records that I didn't drink beer while I was singing. I had been drinking tea and water and it got me a better quality. That was a concern of mine when you said the new record would be meat and potatoes for you... the quality of the singing blew me away... Kirk: It's the same approach vocally! Musically it's more meat and potatoes. I've even
changed the way I sing the old songs and I think that's a lot better. To be fair to myself I never considered myself a singer, singing almost took a back seat. As I got older the music that I listened to as a fan changed. I didn't want to make it more accessible, just better. Vocally it will be the same approach. I want hooks and melodies and emotion. Even my heavy voice went from a bark to something different... I feel like that has really expanded what Crowbar can be and made the last two records better. Yet it remains... Crowbar... Kirk: That's a good way to put it. I've loved everything we've done and I'm proud of it it's just one of those things. We've gotten such positive press and reviews for the past two records, but there were a few people who didn't like the changes. I'm not changing anything for them, but I kind of get it. I listen to all styles of music because I'm a fan of music, not just metal. To me broadening our sound was the right thing to do. We didn't change or sell out. I think its great that we were able to bring new elements. I think for this you have to realize that we had a pretty slow release cycle for a while. Now that Crowbar is my only band my mentality is old school. The machine never stops rolling. We tour and tour and tour and then we make a record. This is the second album you've done since leaving down right? So I guess now you're really getting in a rhythm... Kirk: Exactly! This is our 13th or 14th tour since the record came out. We have been
around. The band is on cruise control. The machine works. Load in, play a gig, drink beer, get some sleep, do it again. Obviously we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of Broken Glass but the 30th anniversary of the band is coming up... Kirk: I'm currently working on remixing and remastering some of the earliest stuff. That might be kind of cool. We still own the reels and now you can dump it onto a digital format and remix them in Pro Tools. I wouldn't want to f*ck it up, but I think it would be cool to offer both. When I was down we talked about doing that with the NOLA record, since I have that in my closet at home. When we were recording Broken Glass the engineer gave the reels for NOLA to me. Of course we wanted to keep the record the way it is, but we thought about having some of the people involved come in to give it a different spin. It just never came to fruition. Do you have any final words of wisdom? Kirk: I just want to thank Crowbar fans! So many of my friends play music for a living but
they play cover songs, there's nothing wrong with that. I was laying in my bunk this morning and thinking of that. I am so fortunate and blessed to be able to make a living playing my music. I'm so blessed I don't have to go sing other peoples songs. There is nothing wrong with that, but that's amazing. Being the type of fan I am I am capable of doing it but I wouldn't want to do that as a job. I feel blessed and fortunate and that gives me reason to go for it. It's my music and words that are moving people and being able to make a living doing what you created is the best gift in the world. Believe me it's not easy. My wife bartends at home. Our drummer Tommy has a job. Things are tough a lot of times, but we are doing it. To do that these days is really difficult. Shifty Lemonade - An Interview with The Body Interview By Sean Barrett Screeching through a swamp of somber distortion, Portland's prolific doom-duo The Body are currently touring on two releases, their latest solo-endeavor/ noisy foray into the world of pop, No One Deserves Happiness, and their ear-shatteringly evil collaboration with Full Of Hell. After talking about karaoke and soft hands outside of the venue, we descend to the below-ground green room to record chat for a while. I heard you just played something called Moogfest. How'd that go for ya? Lee: Y'know, it was Moog keyboards. I guess they did it for a couple years in Asheville, and then they moved it to Durham. Chip: And they wanted it to be bigger; they're trying to make it big. Lee: But, yeah, it was great. Real crazy line-up. Chip: I got to see Gary Numan, two times. I made a joke. Gary Numan laughed. What was the joke? Chip: I don't know. I was so hyped up meeting Gary Numan that I don't remember. He was real nice. Lee Yeah, he was really nice. It seems like - and Author & Punisher walks this line too - you're an act that can play for a metal crowd or these more artistic/experimental crowds. Lee: Yeah, I mean we try not to play too many metal shows. Chip: I've seen a million faces...and I've rocked 'em all. Vest or no vest, cardigan, professor blazer with leather patches...unitards, I'd rock that. It's sort of interesting timing to put out The Body's version of a pop album (No One Deserves Happiness) now that pop artists seem to be getting noisier and weirder. Do you feel like there's some boundary blurring. .ee: I feel like most of the pop music we listen to is pretty out there, for what it is. :hip: Pop mines every other music to make it more palatable. That's how it's always been. When rock 'n' roll was dangerous, you got Mr. Sandman's bringin' me a dream and stuff, and that's real safe rock In' roll. It's always kind of drawn on whatever's there. Which is its appeal. Yeah, just makes it more palatable. Sometimes all I wanna do is listen to something and not think about it. Katy Perry - perfect, gotcha. There's nothing safe or palatable about your last album, except maybe relative to your other ones. Chip: I think it's harsher, I think its heavier. I think we just built the songs like you would build a pop song or a hip-hop song. You mean verse-chorus-verse structure? Chip: No, the recording process. Yeah, we'll have one idea and just build on that, like in hip-hop; if you have one sample, put drums on that sample. LeL
Chip: I just lay down a little bit of six-string magic, it just turns into gold. Tell us a bit about the female vocalists on this. 78 VandalaMagazine.Com July 2016
Lee: It's our friend, Chrissy, who's on - I think - most of the records. Chip: Yeah, she's on every record. Lee: And our friend Marilee who's on a few records, and our friend Reba's on a few records. Chip: There's a few people, all friends. Lee: The more spirited vocals are either Marilee or Reba, and the more subdued ones are Chrissy. To what extent to do you consider them members of the band? Lee: Chrissy's probably pretty much a member at this point. Chip: Yeah, she's been on so much stuff. She weaseled her way in! [laughter] Ler She coordinates the Assembly of Light choir and they did so much for us on all the last records, pretty much. With composing that stuff, and getting people ready to sing it, she's probably done more work on it than we did. Coordinating a twenty person choir is way harder than bashing my sausage fingers around on a guitar, y'know? With all the different people you work with, what percentage of your stuff can't be performed live? [Simultaneously]: 98 percent - 95 percent. [laughter] Lee: I mean, you'll see tonight, I think one song off the new record. Chip: That's our next goal: to be able to replicate more of the stuff we're recording live. Do you think that'll eventually involve bringing more people out? Chip: I hope not. [chuckles] Lee: Tonight, Dan, who played trombone on the record is here. Hell play with us tonight. We'll see how that goes. He's traveling around with ya? Lee: No, he lives here. Never practiced with him. I think tomorrow night, our friend Dylan from Full of Hell might come up with us. Oh, yeah. He should get the noise stuff going. In New York, we've got Static Bloom, should be fun. When you do a collaboration, is it your call who you work with? Chip: Yeah, it's just friends, y'know. If we like what they're doing or think it'd be interesting to see what would happen. With Thou, we kind of wrote songs beforehand, recorded 'ern. With Full of Hell, we went in and just did it. We didn't have anything written or anything, 'cause it was the end of the tour. We're touring with them again in August, but it'll be the collab stuff on that tour. Irthermiew, Shiibtv Leirinomacle An Ighterimiew With Th.e Bady Chip: The one with Krieg, we were already in there recording and he drove up from New Jersey and the time, and showed up with an acoustic guitar, a pedal that would loop and reverse, and a bottle of whiskey, I think. I was like "Man, I hate acoustic guitar, this is gonna rule." Lee: That's Seth[producer]'s thing about acoustic guitars. He hates them, he refuses to record them. Chip: It ended up being good, because there's one song where he's strumming the rhythm of the song, and you can't really hear it, but at the end it's like k-chu, k-chu, k-chu and we're like "That actually worked out pretty good." Lee: Seth was like "Who's this guy coming up?", we said "Ah, it's out friend Neil, it'll be awesome." Chip: "One of the earliest U.S. black metal acts" He's like "Oh, cool" and then "F*cking acoustic guitar!" From what I'm hearing now, it sounds like you jam these out with whatever studio time you have. Chip: Well, we would all have whatever ideas people had, [grabs beer] but, with both of those there was nothing like "Oh, we have this thing, let's do this." It was like "Let's try something like this". The whole tour with Full of Hell, we just talked about things to try. Wow, that makes it a lot more special somehow, that it's unfolding as you're hearing it. Lee: Yeah, I think it helps out too that it doesn't sound like one band altogether.
When I listen to your music or see you live, I get this sense of something really, really bad having happened on a very large scale. In the worldview of The Body, is it just the modern world that's tragic or is that life intrinsically? [Simultaneously] Lee: Intrinsically. Chip: Both Chip: There's something incredibly horrible happening all the time. I think it started with the beginning of life and ends with the destruction of life. That's what I face. Lee: We're fun guys. Chip: We're cool. Yeah, and I've got this cognitive dissonance, 'cause here I am talking to ya and you're nice guys, but there's this harsh misery that comes out of what you do
