About Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH You have before you the Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH brochure and we are delighted to be able to introduce our rhododendron nursery to you. Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH is located in the northern German town of Rastede. Here the 50 hectare site is dedicated to the cultivation of numerous species and sizes of rhododendrons and azaleas. Since 2006 the nursery has been a subsidiary of Van den Berk Nurseries whose 500 hectares make it one of the largest nurseries in Europe. Today, the rhododendrons have become a highly valued part of our extensive range and in terms of size, these plants are a perfect addition. There are more than 160 species large-flowered hybrids, yakushimanum hybrids and azaleas, and they are grown from around 70 cm up to 4 metres in height and width. Whether you need large numbers for planting in large beds or striking solitary plants, both are abundantly available and always of exceptional quality. In this brochure we would like to introduce our rhododendrons to you. Our sales team staff will be able to inform you about prices, sizes and species. If required they will also be able to advise you or arrange a visit to the nursery. You will be warmly welcomed!

Top quality plants The fertile peaty soil in North-Germany is ideal for the cultivation of rhododendrons and azaleas. Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH cultivates all its plants here in the field. This is a very decisive factor for the quality of the plants

Full plants To achieve good, dense branching aboveground as well, the plants are planted with enough space in between. For several growth seasons after planting, the flower buds are nipped out of the plants. This stimulates the plants to concentrate all their energy on the development of branches and leaves instead of flowering and forming seeds. This labour-intensive treatment and regular pruning of rhododendrons results in compact, full plants. These plants are wider than usual, don‘t fall apart as quickly and also look good outside the flowering season.

Rhododendron groups There are many different groups within the Rhododendron genus. At Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH, we grow large-flowered hybrids, yakushimanum hybrids and deciduous azaleas.

to between one and six metres in height and width. They are evergreen and have thick, leathery leaves. In most species the leaf is dark green and shiny. As the name suggests, these rhododendrons have large spherical flowers that consist of multiple calyxes. Their rich colour palette means we can offer a wide choice.

Azalea used to be the scientific name for a certain group of richly flowering shrubs. Through new findings in botany, azaleas are currently included in the Rhododendron genus. However, the name ‚azalea‘ is still in everyday use. Within azaleas we can also distinguish between a large number of groups. In Rastede we only cultivate deciduous

Available sizes The 160 or more species of rhododendrons and azaleas are available in different sizes. We can supply plants from 70 cm up to 4 metres in height and width. With large-flowered hybrids and azaleas, the size is usually given as the height, although with certain species the size is given as the width due to their growing habit. This is the case, for example, with all yakushimanum hybrids. You can see examples of different sizes in these photos.

Exceptional shapes and sizes Some large flowered hybrids are available in exceptionally large sizes. It is a specialty of Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH.

Four metres and wider These are exclusive plants, more than forty years old, more than 4 m tall and wide. These giant plants are no exception on the Rastede plots. They are one of the specialties of Van den Berk Rhododendron GmbH. The rhododendrons are extremely suitable as evergreen ‚architectural‘ elements in projects. As a single specimen or as repetitive green element; they always guarantee a very special effect. Multi-stem rhododendrons Another category of special plants are the multi-stem rhododendrons. These plants are pruned yearly, when the stems at the bottom of the plants are cleared. The capriciously formed stems make these plants very striking specimen, which are also attractive outside the flowering season. Multi-stem rhododendrons are available in sizes from 1,5 to 4 m high; and each plant is unique. Mark out the trees yourself On request, we can send you photos of plants. Of course, you are more than welcome to come and view or mark out the rhododendrons yourself. Call our sales team to make an appointment or for information.

Plant and care Just like any other plants, rhododendrons need light, water and nutrients. A growing site with light shade, for example under oak or fir trees, is ideal. Deciduous azaleas are particularly suited to sunny planting sites. If the soil is moist enough, yakushimanum hybrids also do well in sunny planting sites.

When planting, it is wise to pay attention to a few things:
