World shapers Kerri Woodberry, M.D. Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2007 Plastic Surgeon Murfreesboro, TN

Doctoring Her Medical Practice As a child, Kerri Woodberry spent countless hours putting together puzzles. Today, as a Johns Hopkinstrained plastic surgeon, specializing in hand reconstruction, she helps piece together disfigured bodies and lives. After establishing a successful practice, she realized that one piece was still missing. To obtain the business knowledge that would help her operations reach the next level, she decided to pursue a Vanderbilt MBA. Along with the knowledge she gained, what particularly impressed Dr. Woodberry was the way “Vanderbilt prepares you for a leadership position by emphasizing leadership skills, human relations skills, group projects and teamwork.” The team dynamic paid fast dividends. During a Transforming Operations class, Kerri’s peers chose to study her medical practice. She was able immediately to implement a number of the recommendations they made. “The changes improved efficiency and provided better patient flow,” she says. “I was thrilled to see such major benefits from small changes in my organization.”

PROGRAM DESIGN AND CURRICULUM

The Vanderbilt MBA for executives— built especially for those aspiring to or already at the top.

Highly demanding. Intensely rewarding.

A unified experience The Vanderbilt Executive MBA is a lockstep program with all students completing required course work in sequence with classmates. The unified nature of the program maximizes the shared learning experience and ensures continuity for C-Teams as they assimilate diverse experiences and industry perspectives to deliver on the program requirements.

A collaborative classroom Unlike typical MBA students who average five years of work history, Vanderbilt Executive MBA students have an average of 12 years of experience in the workforce. As a result, our Executive MBA students bring a level of business maturity, diverse perspectives and varied experiences to the classroom that fuel and enrich the learning experience. Vanderbilt professors are adept at using the collective experience of the class to identify and discuss ways that theory can be applied to realtime organizational opportunities and challenges.

An integrated and applied curriculum The Vanderbilt Executive MBA curriculum begins with a deep core of integrated course work—a strong foundation of statistics, plus organization management, finance, accounting, economics, operations and marketing that each accounts for 10 percent of the curriculum. In the second year, the curriculum provides Capstone Courses that help to synthesize all that is learned to that point. These courses, above all, prepare students for the big-picture responsibilities of setting strategy, creating and leading a new business venture and managing in a global environment. A focus on leadership and strategy With a purposeful, programmatic focus on strategy and leadership, Vanderbilt Executive MBA students emerge from the program with the “Executive Edge,” the higherlevel skills needed to navigate against competitors and win; spur growth and profitability; identify process improvements and deconstruct barriers to innovation; create value throughout the organization; and lead an organization through times of turbulence and change.

A global perspective Few businesses today are immune from influences abroad. Through a three-course sequence dedicated to doing business internationally—including a required International Residency during the second year— Vanderbilt Executive MBA students graduate with the ability to guide a company in a global marketplace. An education that transcends “book smarts” Much of what you will acquire in this program transcends what you can glean from a textbook: teamwork; creative problem-solving skills; strategic and analytical thinking; time management; decision making with imperfect information; and an appreciation for differing opinions and perspectives. These skills and behaviors will endure long after the books have been put on the shelf.

PROGRAM DESIGN AND CURRICULUM

A rigorous program with courses that build logically, integrate seamlessly.

Two Saturdays per month. Two one-week residencies. Two years.

Starting in August of Year One and ending in July of Year Two, the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is cleanly segmented into fall, spring and summer semesters with allowances for semester breaks and holidays. In addition to two Saturdays per month, two one-week residencies are incorporated into the program—a Week-in-Residence at the beginning of Year One and an International Residency in the spring of Year Two.

YEAR ONE—Provides you with a solid foundation of management essentials, theory and application. Many Executive MBA programs stop here. Vanderbilt doesn’t.

YEAR TWO—Elevates these topics to CEO level by focusing on strategic aspects of managing the entire organization as well as its functional areas.

The Saturday Schedule. Making it possible to earn an MBA. Staci Springer is an up-and-coming engineer at a multinational industrial lubricant company. When the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program required attendance on both Fridays and Saturdays, she was reluctant to apply; she didn’t want to ask for Fridays off in the midst of a tough economy. That all changed in 2009 when the program’s format shifted. “As soon as I saw the Saturday-only schedule, I hit the ‘submit’ button on my application,” says Springer, who will graduate from Vanderbilt in 2011.

PROGRAM DESIGN AND CURRICULUM

Strategy. Global Perspective. But first, an immediate and intensive immersion. Week-in-Residence at New Harmony Vanderbilt students begin their Executive MBA experience with a rigorous one-week residency in New Harmony, Indiana. Intentionally remote from the everyday demands of personal and professional life, this historic community provides the perfect backdrop for full immersion in the program from the outset. The Week-in-Residence eases the transition to the alternating Saturday class format of the program and provides students with time to get to know one another and the Executive MBA faculty. It also allows time to become acquainted with the objectives and mechanics of the program, to regain and refresh valuable perspectives on being a student, and to begin the C-Team routines such as setting expectations for performance, strategies for studying and when and how often members will meet and communicate with one another. Additionally, key classes— Executive Leadership, Managerial Accounting, Statistics and Managerial Economics—are launched.

“The experience at New Harmony was a tremendous way to jump-start the Executive MBA program and prepare me for the next two years. By removing the distractions of technology, it provided the opportunity to focus not only on the new material we were introduced to but also on building relationships with my classmates that have lasted, and will continue well into the future.”

Heather Diebold Executive MBA 2007

Senior Auditor, Caterpillar Financial Services Nashville, TN

12 owen.vanderbilt.edu

International Residency During the spring of the second year, each Executive MBA class participates in a group immersion experience outside the United States. This week-long International Residency is an integral and final part of the three-part Global Enterprise sequence and ensures that classroom discussions and theory are brought to life in an effective and compelling manner. Typically, the International Residency consists of visits to ten corporations in one or two host countries; these may be satellite offices of companies that are headquartered in the U.S., or local, regional or international companies that are based in these countries. Regardless of city or country, the purpose of these extended, in-depth corporate visits is to understand and discuss the differences and complexities inherent in doing business in the global marketplace, including such things as staffing; financial, legal and political structures; economics and social customs.

Business Strategy Sequence A hallmark of the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is the year-long Business Strategy Sequence that takes place throughout the second year of study. The sequence is comprised of two in-class experiences—one in the fall, one in the spring—and a C-Team consulting project with a client company that runs throughout the year and is completed during the summer, just prior to graduation. Like other Executive MBA courses, the classroom component of the Business Strategy Sequence emphasizes learning by instruction—lecture, reading, case analysis and facilitated discussion. In contrast, the Strategy Project is defined as learning by construction—a total immersion experience in which students are challenged to call upon all of the tools and concepts learned to date and build an integrated strategic plan for a real client company.

The Executive Edge

Patrick Quirk

If you are serious about your career climb, you will need the Executive Edge. An Executive MBA designed with the view from the top. While all programs offer the basic Management Fundamentals, Vanderbilt adds essential layers to help you achieve your full potential as an executive: Advanced Financial Frameworks, Strategic Skills and Vision, and Leadership Development.

Leadership The Executive

Strategic Skills and Vision

Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2009 President and COO, Integr8 Networks, LLC Huntstville, AL

Technologist. Transformer. World Shaper. With more than 20 years in telecommunications, networking and semiconductors, Patrick Quirk’s experience ranged from early-stage startups to Fortune 100 companies—most recently in Ireland as general manager of European engineering operations for LSI. But as an engineer by background, Patrick saw gaps in his knowledge of finance, accounting and strategy—gaps he needed to fill both to handle his steadily increasing responsibilities and equip himself for new ones. The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program, which he chose for its reputation in all three areas, required a challenging balance between work, school and family. One solution involved joint study time with his sons as they all did their homework together. Along with the skills he sought, Patrick says he gained the leadership and analysis tools to guide decision-making. Those skills played a role in another big decision, too. In 2003, he had formed a side business, Integr8 Networks, to help clients incorporate connectivity and networking into their products. During his first year in the EMBA program, Patrick left LSI to focus on transforming his company from consulting to technology development. “My time at Owen,” he says, “empowered me to see beyond the information and discover the trends, enabling me to shape my world rather than be shaped by it.” Read more World Shaper stories at

Experience the view from the corner office. Expect to learn from your peers as well as your profs. At Vanderbilt, you will complete much of your work as part of a “C-Team” of distinguished peers—successful managers and executives from a variety of industries who average 12 years of experience. These cross-functional teams, recruited carefully and assigned at the beginning of the program, are carefully balanced to include diverse backgrounds and experience—such as finance, operations, marketing and sales, information technology and engineering, and human resources—that you’d find in a typical organization’s C-suite. As a result of interactions with your team, you

will widen the lens through which you view problems and opportunities, preparing you to move beyond your previous established career specialization and emerge as a leader who understands the bigger picture of your organization as well as the smaller ones. No wonder that our Executive MBA students and alumni often say their colleagues are also some of their best teachers—and that the C-Team dynamic makes all the difference between knowing and understanding. 18 owen.vanderbilt.edu

ROI for you. Organizational credibility Vanderbilt Executive MBA students find that they earn higher standing in the workplace, resulting in frequent invitations to contribute to organizational initiatives and functions in new, meaningful ways. Recognition by those at the top The program is designed to give all students—even those who are not sponsored—stretch assignments that will catch the attention of the management team and benefit the company in new ways. And a Personal Capstone Project will encourage dialogue with executives at work.

Career and salary growth Despite the worst economy in years, students in the Executive MBA Class of 2010 reported an average 20 percent salary increase, well above the standard costof-living adjustment for their companies before graduation. Self-awareness and confidence Graduates cite a dramatic increase in their time management skills as well as their self-confidence and the knowledge that they have the capabilities to set and achieve aggressive personal and organizational goals.

Nancy Abbott, Vanderbilt Executive MBA 1991

Vice President, Human Resources GE Commercial Finance, Stamford, CT “The program prepared me to transfer to new functions by broadening my skills in areas where I had gaps and broadening my perspective in general. I also built confidence that I could take on tough, new challenges and succeed. The Executive MBA was a good investment for my company and a great one for me.”

Bruce Brockenborough, Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2001 President Hannan Supply Company, Paducah, KY

“There is no doubt that my organization has received an excellent return on its investment. Every day I draw upon my Owen experience to navigate the challenges of management. Gain immediate ROI by applying what you learn on Day One. Make an impact in your organization with beyond-the-classroom learning opportunities. The Vanderbilt program offers a number of Apply-it-now Experiences designed to widen your perspective and allow you to build on the knowledge you gain. Over the course of two years, you will... • Complete a Business Strategy Project as part of a year-long strategy sequence. Your C-Team will work with a company of your choosing to create a comprehensive strategic plan for the organization. • Work with your C-Team to apply classroom learning to a real problem facing one of your employers. For example, you might seek to revise an incentive plan that inadvertently leads to undesired behaviors (Managerial Economics); redesign a supply chain process (Transforming Processes) or build a new spreadsheet model that provides better information for management decisions (Managerial Accounting). • Take on a Personal Capstone Project that allows you to showcase your capabilities within your organization, addressing an issue, initiative or opportunity that will move your company forward. • Have the opportunity to develop a New Venture business plan from scratch that will help you prepare and present your ideas to venture capital firms for financing.

“In business today there is as much focus on efficiency as there is on growth. At Junior Achievement, we are equally responsible for creating value for our donors and delivering quality programming to the young people we serve. My education at Vanderbilt has already helped me identify and articulate unique benefits to offer community supporters. At the same time, discussions with professors and classmates have helped me streamline the funding processes, resulting in a stronger return on our donors’ investment. This has positioned us to increase our student reach because creating value makes us a better community partner and more attractive to new donors.”

About the Owen Graduate School of Management

In 1969, the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management opened its doors to 10 students and 10 faculty members in a former funeral home. Today, Owen is one of the world’s top business schools and is widely recognized for its challenging academics, stimulating and innovative research environment, a strong student/ faculty ratio and a spirit of teamwork. The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program was launched in 1978. Vanderbilt students, faculty and alumni agree: this is a special place where you find support and encouragement for reaching your goals. And once you belong to the Owen community, you belong for life. We have always sought out a select number of individuals who seek to shape the Owen experience to fit their needs and aspirations—and who, in doing so, exert a shaping influence on the larger community—our school, our university and beyond. Old Mechanical Executive Programs are housed in Old Mechanical, one of the original buildings on the Vanderbilt campus. This building has been updated several times over the years with a significant remodel in 2008. Designed with feedback and funding from Executive MBA students and alumni, this space combines the unique historical character of a circa 1888 brick building with classrooms boasting contemporary, flexible seating and state-of-theart technology. The Executive Lounge bundles together a business center, study area and catering kitchen, providing a home away from home for executive students.

World-class management library The Walker Management Library offers resources and personal service that are unmatched at most top-tier business schools. Each C-Team is assigned a research librarian who will guide members to the right databases and assets for any given assignment; these services can be accessed on campus or over the Internet from remote locations. In addition to space in the Executive Lounge, the library offers 21 study rooms for team meetings, equipped with wireless Internet access and ample work tables and seating. Online course work and collaboration tools Executive MBA students use “BlackBoard,” a best-of-class learning system used by Vanderbilt and other prestigious universities. While this will be a primary tool for online assignments and faculty communication, there are many other tools such as Skype and Panopto available to faculty and teams to collaborate and present important information. All are vetted and supported by Owen’s IT Services department.
