Flexibility for distance learning.

Students based outside Middle Tennessee have the opportunity to greatly reduce their travel by participating in a portion of classroom sessions via real-time teleconference. Distance students can engage in face-to-face dialogue with professors and peers through state-of-the art technology during weekday core courses and visit Nashville for the weekend industry-intensive sessions.

HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF RECENT CAPSTONE PROJECTS: Expanding a regional hospital footprint. Developed a strategy for a hospital expansion by identifying criteria for evaluating and analyzing opportunities. Improving access to care. Evaluated the feasibility of creating a telemedicine network to improve access to care in the midst of a physician shortage. Decreasing non-emergency utilization of ERs. Identified un- and under-insured individuals and rerouted their visits from ERs to a new federally qualified and funded health center. Assessing the impact of a merger. Evaluated the impact of a new hospital and proposed marketing synergies, as well as a specialized positioning that would result in incremental growth.

Associate Professor of Operations Management

A renowned expert and researcher on healthcare management and economics, Larry Van Horn is a leading figure within the Vanderbilt healthcare community. His research in consumer-driven healthcare markets assisted the White House with the June 24, 2019, Executive Order requiring true price transparency in healthcare markets, which was signed into law on November 15, 2019. He is a member of the Health Human Services (HHS) Quality Summit panel. He has consulted with many of the largest hospital systems and insurers in the U.S. on topics of data analysis, as well as antitrust concerns.

Lapré teaches Operations Management and is an internationally known expert on organizational learning curves. He has received awards for excellence in research at Owen, as well as the Dean's Teaching Award for outstanding contributions to teaching and learning. His research explores quality, productivity, customer dissatisfaction, service failure, bankruptcy, after-sales service, race wins, and competitive imbalance. His industry studies include steel-cord manufacturing, U.S. airlines, semiconductor manufacturing, Formula One racing, and the FIFA World Cup.
