World shapers Patricia Carter

Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2009 Senior Manager, Global Market Development, Smith & Nephew Durham, NC

Engineer. Strategist. World Shaper. An engineer by training, Patricia Carter had earned a role in brand management with Smith & Nephew, one of the world’s leading producers of medical devices. But she knew she needed more—“a better understanding of the complexities of the global business environment”—to reach the company’s executive level. At Vanderbilt, she benefited from an experience she describes as “very real world.” Many of the professors, Patricia says, “create their own textbooks or workbooks that are a compendium of all the things they see as valuable teaching tools. You also learn an immense amount from your peers, as many classes require students to bring in examples of the problems their companies or industries face.” In particular, Patricia says, the year-long strategy project and the international residency in China were assets that paid major dividends. After completing her MBA, Patricia shifted from brand management to focus on developing a five-year strategic plan for her division’s international business. She credits her international residency in China. The experience “gave me a major competitive advantage over nearly all of my peers,” she says. And applying her newly gained knowledge of strategy, “all of the executives were extremely impressed with the ease at which I broke down the issues and created a robust plan that our business could support. Owen gave me a solid framework for tackling complex issues.”

An integrated and applied curriculum The Vanderbilt Executive MBA curriculum begins with a core of integrated course work—a strong quantitative foundation of statistics, finance and accounting plus organization management, economics, operations and marketing. Each accounts for 10 percent of the curriculum. In the second year, the curriculum also provides Capstone Courses to synthesize core material and prepare students for the big-picture responsibilities of setting strategy, creating and leading a new business venture and managing in a global environment. A focus on leadership and strategy With a purposeful focus on strategy and leadership, Vanderbilt Executive MBA students emerge from the program with an executive edge—the higher-level skills needed to win against competitors; spur growth and profitability; identify process improvements; deconstruct barriers to innovation; create value and lead an organization through times of turbulence and change. An education that transcends “book smarts” Much of what you will acquire in this program transcends what you can glean from a textbook: teamwork; creative problem-solving skills; time management; and an

appreciation for differing opinions and perspectives. These skills and behaviors will endure long after the books have been put on the shelf. A global perspective Few businesses today are immune from influences abroad. Through a six-credit sequence dedicated to doing business internationally—including a required International Residency during the second year—Vanderbilt Executive MBA students graduate with the ability to guide a company in a global marketplace.

Want a more intense global experience? The Americas MBA for Executives is a two-year MBA program designed for executives managing (or aspiring to manage) cross-border organizations throughout the Americas. The Saturday Schedule. Making it possible to earn an MBA. Staci Springer is a regional manager at a multinational industrial lubricant company. When the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program required attendance on both Fridays and Saturdays, she was reluctant to apply; she didn’t want to ask for Fridays off in the midst of a tough economy. That all changed in 2009 when the program’s format shifted. “As soon as I saw the Saturday-only schedule, I hit the ‘submit’ button on my application,” says Springer, who graduated from Vanderbilt in 2011.

Strategy. Global Perspect an immediate and Week-in-Residence

Vanderbilt students begin their Executive MBA experience with a rigorous one-week residency in New Harmony, Indiana. Intentionally remote from the everyday demands of personal and professional life, this historic community provides the perfect backdrop for full immersion in the program from the outset. The Week-in-Residence eases the transition to the alternating Saturday class format of the program and provides students with time to get to know one another and the Executive MBA faculty. It also allows time to become acquainted with the objectives and mechanics of the program, to regain and refresh valuable perspectives on being a student, and to begin the team-building and logistics planning required of your C-Team. You’ll start setting expectations for performance, strategies for studying, and schedules for members to meet and communicate with one another. Additionally, key classes—Executive Leadership, Managerial Accounting, Statistics and Managerial Economics—are launched.

“The experience at New Harmony was a tremendous way to jump-start the Executive MBA program and prepare me for the next two years. By removing the distractions of technology, it provided the opportunity to focus not only on the new material we were introduced to but also on building relationships with my classmates that have lasted, and will continue well into the future.”

ive. But first, intensive immersion. International Residency

During the spring of Year Two, each Executive MBA class participates in a group immersion experience outside the United States. This week-long International Residency is an integral and final part of the three-part Global Enterprise sequence and ensures that classroom discussions and theory are brought to life in an effective and compelling manner. Typically, the International Residency consists of visits to ten corporations in one or two host countries; these may be satellite offices of companies that are headquartered in the U.S., or local, regional or international companies that are based in these countries. Regardless of city or country, the purpose of these corporate visits is to understand and discuss with local executives the differences and complexities inherent in doing business in the global marketplace, including such things as staffing; financial, legal and political structures; economics, social customs and career issues for expats. Recent countries visited include Korea, China, Brazil and India.

Business Strategy Sequence

A hallmark of the Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is the year-long Business Strategy Sequence that takes place throughout Year Two. The sequence is comprised of year-long in-class experiences and a C-Team consulting project with a client company that runs throughout the year and is completed during the summer, just prior to graduation. Like other Executive MBA courses, the classroom component of the Business Strategy Sequence emphasizes learning by instruction—lecture, reading, case analysis and facilitated discussion. In contrast, the Strategy Project is defined as learning by construction—a total immersion experience in which students are challenged by the faculty advisor—who meets frequently with C-Teams—to call upon all of the tools and concepts learned to date and build an integrated strategic plan for a real client company.

cross-functional C-Teams

Expect to learn from your peers as well as your profs. At Vanderbilt, you’ll complete much of your work as part of a “C-Team” of distinguished peers. These cross-functional teams, assigned at the beginning of the program, are carefully and deliberately designed during the recruiting process to ensure that each C-Team replicates a corporate executive team (or C-Suite). Balanced to include a diversity of industries, backgrounds and experience, you’ll have someone on your team representing the various roles you’d find in a typical organization’s C-Suite (CEO, CFO or CAO, COO, CMO, CIO,

and/or CHRO).

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Immediate and sustainab For you. For ROI for you. Organizational credibility Vanderbilt Executive MBA students find that they earn higher standing in the workplace, resulting in frequent invitations to contribute to organizational initiatives in new, meaningful ways. Recognition by those at the top The program is designed to give all students—even those who are not sponsored—stretch assignments that will catch the attention of the executive team and benefit the company in new ways. And a Personal Capstone Project will encourage dialogue with executives at work.

Career and salary growth Despite the worst economy in years, only one year into the program 26 percent of the Executive MBA Class of 2012 reported a salary increase, well above the standard cost-of-living adjustment for their companies. And 56 percent of the Executive MBA Class of 2011 received a promotion or greater management responsibility before graduation. Self-awareness and confidence Graduates cite dramatic improvements in their time management skills as well as their self-confidence and the knowledge that they have the capabilities to set and achieve aggressive personal and organizational goals.

Nancy Abbott, Vanderbilt Executive MBA 1991 Vice President, Human Resources GE Commercial Finance, Stamford, CT

“The program prepared me to transfer to new functions by broadening my skills in areas where I had gaps and broadening my perspective in general. I also built confidence that I could take on tough, new challenges and succeed. The Executive MBA was a good investment for my company and a great one for me.”

Alan Applonie, Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2008

Chief Operating Officer Taylor Farms Pacific, Tracy, CA

“The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program is hugely relevant. I experienced tremendous returns for my company, even after only one semester at Owen. I have decided that the program is not expensive, but engaging in business without it is.”

ROI for your organization. Immediate solutions to pressing issues From Day One, Vanderbilt Executive MBA students are able and encouraged to apply classroom and project learning to real-time issues and opportunities at the office. Along with their own insight, they bring to their offices the best practices of their accomplished peers and distinguished Vanderbilt faculty. An increase in the bottom line Critical theories coupled with practical and provocative discussions prompt students to question “business as usual.” This questioning—when focused on a company’s cost structure, sales and marketing strategies, and manufacturing processes—often results in million-dollar benefits to the bottom line. Greater bench strength Vanderbilt Executive MBA students offer employers new ideas and perspectives, new talents and vast resources in the way of access to Vanderbilt faculty, a strong alumni base and the databases and support services of a world-class business library. Long-term loyalty of prized employees Studies have shown that graduates of the Vanderbilt MBA program for executives remain loyal to their current employers, regardless of level of sponsorship. If not through tuition, companies tend to reward these employees—who produce valuable work and insight—at a level that motivates loyalty.

Josh Anthony

applying what Day One.

Vanderbilt Executive MBA 2009 Vice President, Global Nutrition and Health Campbell Soup Company Camden, New Jersey

Scientist. Product Innovator. World Shaper. Josh Anthony holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Physiology. But despite his position as R&D Director in charge of new product innovation for an international producer of infant formula, he recognized that “people in industry are often associated with their functional role.” Wanting to move beyond that role to contribute more to his company by enhancing his understanding of business, he set a goal: “to be sufficiently versed across disciplines so that I am not only viewed as a scientist but also as a business partner who can contribute across functional boundaries.” At Vanderbilt, he found the right fit: “a world-class MBA program without pretense” and coursework he could apply immediately in his own work to make an impact beyond his role in R&D. Drawing on what he learned in Statistics and Macroeconomics, for example, Josh worked with his company’s market research department to develop models for predicting changes in infant formula share using Macroeconomic indicators. Using knowledge from Corporate Valuation and Marketing classes, he partnered cross-functionally to develop metrics to better assess the value of the company’s new product opportunities. “For me,” he says, “the MBA is about opportunity. The knowledge I’ve gained has afforded me opportunities to meet business challenges and grow my career in new directions.” Among those opportunities was a new position. In 2011, Josh became Vice President for Global Nutrition and Health at the Campbell Soup Company. Read more World Shaper stories at owenworldshapers.com

university. school of business. About the Owen Graduate School of Management

In 1969, the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management opened its doors to 10 students and 10 faculty members in a former funeral home. Today, Owen is one of the world’s top business schools and is widely recognized for its challenging academics, stimulating and innovative research environment, a strong student/ faculty ratio and a spirit of teamwork. The Vanderbilt Executive MBA program was launched in 1978. Vanderbilt students, faculty and alumni agree: this is a special place where you find support and encouragement for reaching your goals. And once you belong to the Owen community, you belong for life. We have always sought out a select number of individuals who seek to shape the Owen experience to fit their needs and aspirations—and who, in doing so, exert a shaping influence on the larger community—our school, our university and beyond. Old Mechanical Executive Programs are housed in Old Mechanical, one of the original buildings on the Vanderbilt campus. This building has been updated several times over the years with a significant remodel in 2008. Designed with feedback and funding from Executive MBA students and alumni, this space combines the unique historical character of a circa 1888 brick building with classrooms boasting contemporary, flexible seating and state-of-theart technology. The Executive Lounge bundles together a business center, study area and catering kitchen, providing a home away from home for executive students.

World-class management library The Walker Management Library offers resources and personal service that are unmatched at most top-tier business schools. Each C-Team is assigned a research librarian who will guide members to the right databases and assets for any given assignment; these services can be accessed on campus or over the Internet from remote locations. In addition to space in the Executive Lounge, the library offers 21 study rooms for team meetings, equipped with wireless Internet access and ample work tables and seating. Online course work and collaboration tools Executive MBA students use “BlackBoard,” a best-of-class learning system used by Vanderbilt and other prestigious universities. While this will be a primary tool for online assignments and faculty communication, there are many other tools such as Skype and Panopto available to faculty and teams to collaborate and present important information. All are vetted and supported by Owen’s IT Services department.
