The growth of Disney merchandising can be charted in a direct rise in the short span between 1929 and 1932. Late in ’29 Walt struck a deal to license Mickey’s likeness for a children’s tablet for 300 dollars when a man pitched the deal, cash in hand, at a moment when Walt sorely needed the money. Walt himself sought out a relationship with George Borgfeldt & Co. in 1930 to produce Disney bisque figures in Japan. In 1932, it was Marketing executive Kay Kamen who truly drove the rise of Disney Merchandise. After securing a meeting to present his proposal to Walt and Roy, he travelled to Hollywood with his life’s savings in hand to offer as an advance against his promised returns. He stayed awake for the entire two day trip to guard against being robbed, and fell asleep in the office while Walt and Roy were discussing his offer. Luckily they accepted. In just the next four years, even at the height of the Great Depression, Kamen’s marketing plan raised over 35 million dollars for Disney.
