HAVING FUN WHILE GIVING BACK
From the biginning, we at Barefoot have felt that giving back to the comunitiy is as important a part of what we do as making great wine. We’ve been doing it for over 20 years now and it’s something we feel extremely passionate about. Over the year Barefoot has been part of thousands of non profit events, and our popularity has grown along with our support of these ground breaking organisations.
Introduction Outsider Art is Dead! Long Live Outsider Art!! The concept behind Outsider Art is appealing. This is the idea that there are artists ‘out there’ who practice beyond the influence of culture and therefore produce Art in its purist form. However, this idea is contested, particularly over the last 10-15 years after the emergence and maturation of several important social arts projects who have added their voices to the debate around the definition of Outsider Art. Many of these arts projects grew out of the Care In The Community initiative which was launched after the closure of psychiatric hospitals under Thatcher’s government. Suddenly there were hundreds of artists who might or might not be ‘Outsiders’. If Wolfli (Jean Dubuffet’s champion) epitomised Outsider then perhaps many others did too - after all Wolfli was a young adult when incarcerated and was therefore fully encultured. Outsider Art as envisioned by Dubuffet doesn’t really exist except in the abstract. The English term Outsider Art is more encompassing and realistic and includes self taught and naive artists. Here Outsider Artists have culture but haven’t passed through the arts school system. However, lack of economic means associated with (for example) mental or physical ill health seems to be the most common and overlooked criteria linked to Outsider Art. Admittedly it’s a more mundane definition but it’s no less important and gives Outsider Art a socio-economic dimension. The Impact Art Fair provides Outsider Artists the opportunity to be seen and appreciated by the public by making participation affordable and by offering additional support where needed. The Impact Art Fair shares common aims with the many pivotal organisations present. More than anything else, the Impact Art Fair celebrates the unique and amazing artists who have travelled long and arduous journeys to be at the fair. 3

Morgan Art Saved Me. A few years ago, I took an overdose, then jumped under a train. Since leaving hospital, I have been unable to stop painting. Everybody wants to be seen and heard. The art allows me to try and say what I want to say, in the way I want to say it. Truthfully.
The experience of adversity has in some ways, also been an opportunity. It has provided lots of new material. Inevitably some pieces are dark. Others are full of hope and joy. I look at life differently now. This is who I am. This is what I do.

Chris Wilson’s paintings are the aftermath of a free flowing ritual encounter, done early in the morning (fuelled by lots of coffee and tobacco), with the vestiges of love, damage, sex, innocence and violence that constitute his somatic and psychic experience. Wilson is a broken magician and his paintings are the residue of the casting of blind spells. His first book ‘Horse Latitudes’ is published by

Benassai From an artistic and wealthy background, I have always been an outsider. The Arts are my life. The artist is happy to wear this garment (the Arts) like a knight between ritual and result. Arts can make me faint, lose control, collapse and suddenly stand
up to bow and praise the Art of Madness. My mutable being, my persona will be in balance only by the power of the Arts. I would like to thank a thousand artists, the Punk Scene, and my late grandmother, Signora Lorina Benassai for helping me be who I am.

I am interested in things which suggest things rather in images that defines all. I am interested in the use of chance and serendipity in ways that distance itself between the intellectual and the activity of painting. Engaging with the strong physical masks that somehow appears in the process of using black ink and bleach. Sometimes I see it and then paint it, other times I paint it and see it.

The female nude features strongly in my work. Using marbled canvases helps me create a surreal dreamlike landscape of impossibilities (such as the landscape in “Fox Heaven” crumbling into outer space). The animal heads add a symbolic element, for example the butterfly symbolizing freedom.

My work is about friendship, loyalty and control. My love for animals has been a major influence in my life and this has inspired my work. What others might consider minor and unimportant details are the very things that inspire my work. I love the small details of different animals like the gorilla’s cheeks and the anteater’s claws.

Art has become a big part of my life and has given me a new purpose and direction. I find myself inspired by pattern, shape, colour and landscapes that I love – the West of Ireland, Australia, the sea and the Downs.
