Mental Health Week Canadian Mental Health Week is May 1–7. We are holding a series of programs to encourage everyone to learn, reflect, and talk about issues relating to mental health.

Tuesday, May 2 Healthy Brain, presented by Alzheimer Society of BC Healthy aging is important for everyone, and it is essential not to forget the health of your brain as well! This workshop encourages you to actively engage in protecting and maintaining your brain. Learn strategies and set goals for improving the health of your mind, body and spirit. Anyone interested in brain health is welcome to attend. Registration is required. Please leave a message on our registration line at 604-937-4155 with your name, the name of the program, and the number of people who will be attending. 1:30–3:30 • Poirier Branch • Nancy Bennett Room Thursday, May 4 Youth Mental Health and Substance Abuse, presented by counsellors from SHARE’s Youth Substance Use Services Learn about the prevalence of youth mental health and substance use problems, and receive tips on building relationships with youth to prevent problems and/or provide support. For adults, parents, caregivers and youth-serving professionals. Registration is not required. 7:00–8:30 • City Centre Branch • Room 136 Friday, May 5 Getting to Know Dementia, presented by Alzheimer Society of BC This introductory session reviews information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and the challenges of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will learn about the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey, and how to begin planning for the future. People with a diagnosis of dementia, care partners and family members are all invited to attend—this session is not intended for a general audience. Registration is required. Wednesday, May 10 Mental Health and Employment The Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor from Fraser Health, representatives from New View Society and AVIA Employment Services will share their knowledge on employment and vocational guidance for mental disabilities in an informal discussion with the community. Everyone, especially employers, is welcome and registration is not required. 6:00–8:00 • City Centre Branch • Room 137 Friday, May 12 Meet and Greet with Tri-Cities Mental Health In this informal meeting, staff members from Tri-Cities Mental Health Centre will explain mental health services offered in the Tri-Cities and how to access them. In addition to English, there will be staff who speak Cantonese/Mandarin, Korean and Farsi to facilitate communication and answer your questions. Third Biannual All Nations Festival—Coast Salish Stories We invite you to attend an Indigenous writer’s symposium featuring various leading Indigenous authors, including Lee Maracle. Coinciding with National Aboriginal Day, we look forward to showcasing the amazing contributions and resilience of Indigenous writers in their communities and across Canada. Indigenous writers will present their words and experiences to a mixed audience of Coquitlam readers and authors. In collaboration with Red Wolf Spirit Adventures Society and Coquitlam School District #43 Aboriginal Education. Teen Poetry Slam Teens in grades 8–12 compete for prizes in this annual performance poetry event. Each poet must perform one original poem in three minutes or less. Movie Matinée: Moana It’s Pro-D Day! Take a break from schoolwork and watch this Disney movie. A teenage girl embarks on an epic voyage that could change the future of her people. School Success Many of our homework help programs pair children with teen tutors. Younger students can improve their schoolwork with the help of a friendly teenager, while teens earn community service hours by doing fun and gratifying volunteer work.

Homework Help Need help with your homework? Teen tutors in grades 9–12 provide instructional help to kids in grades 1–6 who are struggling with their class assignments. Science Expo Celebrate knowledge and discovery with us at our second annual Science Expo. Gwynne Dyer on the Trump Era Spend an evening with Gwynne Dyer, journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs.
