Q
tHE sHOW
SYNOPSIS AVENUE Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets, and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets! Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the dis-
traction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery. Life may suck on AVENUE Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, having sex (whether hetero, homo or porno... and that’s just the puppets) are just some of the topics featured in the terrific songs of this show.
AVENUE Q was the winner of the 2004 TONY AWARDÂŽ for BEST NEW MUSICAL, BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL and BEST ORIGINAL SCORE!
History AVENUE Q THE MUSICAL is the result of a wonderful collaboration between Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx. The pair began writing AVENUE Q in 1999, thinking that their idea would make for a great TV series. Three years later it opened off-Broadway, and after extending 4 times at the Vineyard Theatre following rave reviews, it transferred to Broadway. Since opening at the Golden Theatre in 2003, AVENUE Q has scooped the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical, and in 2004 was the winner of 3 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In June 2006, AVENUE Q THE MUSICAL travelled across the Atlantic to the UK and opened in London’s West End, re-opening the Noël Coward Theatre (formerly the Albery Theatre). Alan Brodie from The Noël Coward Foundation said, “We are
delighted that AVENUE Q is the first production in the newly re-named Noël Coward Theatre. It is witty, irreverent, musical and above all entertaining, all elements that Noël Coward himself would have heartily approved. I’m sure Noël would have loved this show”. On 28th March 2009, AVENUE Q ended its run at the Noël Coward Theatre, and after a brief holiday for the puppets it re-opened on 1st June at the Gielgud Theatre where it ran until 13th March 2010. On 19th March 2010, AVENUE Q moved home once again and took up residence at the Wyndham’s Theatre. On 30th October it was finally time to bid a fond furwell to the loveably hopeless characters of AVENUE Q as they packed their bags and moved out of the Wyndhams for their UK 2011 / 2012 Tour.
