My wife was afraid of the dark. Then she saw me naked and now she's afraid of the light.

It was not a bosom to repose upon, but it was a capital bosom to hang jewels on.

I don't mind my wife having the last word. In fact I'm delighted when she reaches it.

he Chinese team at the Olympics has humbled everyone. America, more than any other country, has eaten the bigger chunk of the pie. China currently leads on the medals table, garnering more gold. So impressive is China's performance that one 'bad belle' American coach insinuated that the incredible swimming prowess of 16 year-old Ye Shiwen could not have been possible without performance drugs. Well, the dope test came out last week and Sinewi was clean. The lass is all talent. Ye Shiwen and all the other athletes flying China's glowing flag did not get their records by eating eba. Hard work and the vision of their government have paid off today. Where am I going? The foundation you lay today will determine your tomorrow. What Nigeria is passing through today is the outcome of what we invested in the past. So, you want to ask, what are we putting into today? What are we investing in the youths of today? The future! Whose examples do they copy? The scams? The corruption? The strife? With nothing to hold up to, two young men decided they had had enough of the older generation who seemed to have failed on all grounds. 5 years ago, they decided to scout for and reward young Nigerians who have excelled in their f i e l d s o f e n d e a v o u r . Enter the future awards and the duo of Chude Jideowo and Debola Williams, who created it. Our cover this week celebrates the vision of these two. They have shown that there is hope. In the midst of hopelessness and thievery, there are Nigerians who are efficient, smart and investing in the future. The future awards bring these to us, holding them up as examples to follow. What brilliance! China determined that its citizens must excel; her leaders led by example and invested in her youth.

CARROT PANTS

Y

ou may be asking yourself what are these “carrot pants” you speak of to which I reply they are sort of like modern day “hammer time” pants. They are baggy up top with a wicked long crotch line and then tapper towards the bottom creating a carrot shape. The '80s inspired carrot pants are in the men's fashion this season especially on the runways. These pants are perfect for those of you who prefer an urban look.

JEANS

M

en's jean trends may not come and go as quickly as women's jean trends do, but for this season we've been seeing quite the variety in jeans! From slimmer leg cuts to new finishes and colors, there are plenty of new men's jean trends to try, Cuffed jeans are an easy way to give instant style to any pair of jeans. Coloured jeans for men are a popular trend this season. From bright red Crayola-like colors to muted tones and even a few pastel jeans, men's denim is no longer sticking to blue as its favorite color, It makes for an effortlessly casual look that has just a hint of style. Skinny Jeans are wearable and have just the right amount of style and sass. Both slim and super slim cuts as are stylish options this season and can be dressed up or down for a very fashion forward look. Metallic Jeans is the new men's metallic jeans that have just a bit of shine, making an almost leather-like look. Pair with some dress shoes for some truly statement-making jeans.

his style is everywhere for men this season It seems that no matter what some may think, other gents are hell-bent on wearing them. Capri pants are not long shorts or short pants. The designs range from below the knee to just below the calf. They can be worn at any of the lengths above. They are definitely casual wear. This is not something to try to pull off at the office. It looks great with button downs and polos and it is so much more relaxed than regular pants and trendier than plain old jeans. The fit is the main thing to get right. The gentleman's fit means sleek and slender but not tight.

SUIT PANTS

ithout suits, men would have nothing. In the hierarchy of style, a good suit remains a man's only trump card. Even in this sad age of casual-wear, the suit pants still carries an air of success, taste, and sophistication. It is designed to make you look better, to break boundaries between social classes, to make a small man tall with pinstripes or a fat man rich with soft wools. The suit pants looks good for a night out, dinner parties and everywhere you want to be. It is, in its best forms, a complete outfit that will never fail you. Suit pants have always been an essential part of a man's wardrobe.

ashionable skinny pants for men do look uber cool, and can be worn by just about anyone if done right. They have a slimmer fit are considered skinny jeans. It is absolutely one of the hottest trends and many celebrities have been seen out and about sporting the look. While some have sworn off ever wearing them claiming it to be torture to wear, it is really ignorance on their part preventing them from enjoying a cool new look of a hot fashion trend. While at first glance it may look less comfortable, the fact is that the wellcut version of skinny pants are designed to fit a man right no matter how slim in the legs the pants are. Men that are of stockier built can look good too; it is ultimately the cut that counts. As long as the size and style is chosen carefully, they can pull off the look without a hitch. In fact, skinny pants worn by men that are broader can give the illusion that they are actually slimmer. This trend is in fact a great boon for the bigger built men as they can carry off the latest trend with the right pair of denim jeans making them look slimmer and hotter than ever while showing off their trendy fashion sense.

esigners have reinvented pajamas and they are no longer meant for at-home-wear. This fashion has the ability to accommodate many looks, from classic casual sophistication. This simply means this comfortable look is just as versatile as it is wearable and just one of the many forgiving trends that offer comfort for fashion and adds a little bit of edge to the men's wardrobe. Want to partake of this pajamas trend? Find pants, which look like pajamas and combine them with a t-shirt or a shirt with the same pattern. argo pants are more than just pants for hikers. They've come a long way to become a very versatile piece of men's fashion to add to any wardrobe. Most people don't think about cargo pants when they think about men's fashion. However, cargo pants have been around for generations and it's doubtful that they'll disappear anytime soon. First worn by the British military then adopted by the U.S. Military, cargo pants started to make their way into the men's fashion scene during the 1990's. Since then, Cargo pants they've gone through many different phases and continue to be a versatile piece of clothing that can be used during leisure or to dress down a look that is too formal. O

nce upon a time, there were two young men called Debola and Chude. They were very passionate about their country but did not know how to actualise their dream in making other youths like them passionate about their country too. They worked in the same field and many times they would get together, sharing ideas and swapping strategies that would build a better tomorrow. Before long, they decided that it was time to act and literally take the future in their own hands and empower other young people as well as celebrate those youths who were doing worthwhile things, contributing to society, breaking barriers and inspiring other young people. They decided to start a movement called 'The Future Project'. This movement birthed what we now know to be 'The Future Awards' which is now in its seventh season. The two guys behind this project are, of course, our cover personalities, Chude Jideonwo and Debola Williams. They set up Red Media, a PR and Communication business whose clients have included Google, BlackBerry, the British Council, amongst

others and created several direct impact platforms including The Future Enterprise Support Scheme (TF-ESS), the Young Writers Network, Get Your Green On, the Do-Something Youth Conferences amongst others. They have produced very successful national campaigns with responsibility for the viral 'I Represent Naija' and 'I am the Future' campaigns in 2008 and 2009. Red Media/The Future Project has worked with the World Bank, the Africa Union, the British Council, the Nigerian Presidency and the Federal Ministries of Youth, Education and Information. Blue-chip companies it has worked for/with include MTN, Zain, NB Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc, Stanbic IBTC, GTBank, First Inland Bank, Access Bank and Ericsson, amongst others. They both spoke with Latasha Ngwube (a past nominee of The Future Awards) about their partnership, the new season of 'The Future Awards' and why they are both still single!

I realised early in life that I wasn't a conventional person — Debola Williams I

F YOU WERE TO DESCRIBE IN THREE WORDS OR LESS WHAT YOU DID FOR A LIVING WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Selling/Partnerships. Teaching. Entertaining.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST STRENGTH? My ability to influence people even if we, necessarily, do not get along. My job revolves, a lot, around people. RED MEDIA IS A COMPANY YOU CO-OWN WITH CHUDE. WHAT DOES IT STAND FOR IN THESE TIMES OF COMPROMISE? Red Media is a business guided by simple ethical statements and, at every point in time, we ask ourselves these questions before getting to work: Is this beneficial to our client, partner or end-user? Is it consistent with best practice? Will it lead to positive relationship with relevant stakeholders? And with that, we are able to manage through all seasons. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR LIFE'S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? Hmmm. We face challenges everyday in all shapes and sizes but something we have taught ourselves over the years, through working as a team, running the companies under the group and doing the awards is that excuses are not allowed. If there is a wall, find the hole; if there is no hole, well, create one. And that has been a huge part of the driving force so I really can't complain about challenges because as Joe Brown said, "A challenge is an opportunity to prove your ability to yourself, and others". W H AT I S Y O U G R E AT E S T ACHIEVEMENT? I'm not sure I have achieved that feat yet in terms of physical or material achievement. I have made presentations before heads of government. I have dined with presidents, sealed exciting deals on my job, marketing, and still eager for more but a personal achievement would be to know God and having a deep and personal relationship with him. WHAT SPAWNED 'THE FUTURE PROJECT' AND HOW DID EVERYTHING FALL INTO THE PLACES THEY ARE NOW? WHO HAS BEEN THE GREATEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR LIFE? I learnt very early in life that you will find many blessings in many people as well as disappointments. I have had influences from so many people but my mum kind of stands out as she taught us to be bold and confident children whilst respecting authority. She encouraged us to be selfless and love each other and I do believe love is indeed the greatest. If everyone could love their neighbour, if the people in government could love the people they rule, the world will be a better place. DIGITAL MEDIA IS TAKING OVER BUT DO YOU THINK PRINT WILL EVER BE COMPLETELY ERASED? Never. This has been said for ages now, but the good old print will forever be in style. You see, there is something special about being in a paper. There's a sense of exclusivity to it and the nationality is unbeatable. Statistics of how many internet users compared to how many who do not have access says to anyone using the digital platforms that they are only speaking

to a small group of people. Call them influencers but to reach the mass market, traditional media still holds its place. Social media also doesn't have the trust that the papers have and the pace can be too much sometimes. The power of social media cannot be under-estimated. It's an evolution that has come and should be embraced because it will only grow bigger. We realized this many years ago when we powered a national event. LEAVING HIGH SCHOOL, WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM CAREER? The people wanted me to be a lawyer. I talked a lot as a kid; the whole neighbourhood called me 'little lawyer'. I wanted to be an actor. I was a dramatist and sometimes a clown, specializing in making everyone laugh. I was almost named a joker; no one really took me seriously. I acted at every opportunity so I thought it was clear enough that I had to be an actor and being close to the media could make that happen. So I started networking and finding my way into that terrain, networking and meeting people, going from auditions to auditions and acting on stage concurrently. I eventually got a job presenting and producing a youth show on the NTA with Emilia called 'Youth Talk'. We started as presenters then started getting our guests and planning the show. We didn't realise that what we were doing was producing at that time; until after 2 years on the job with NTA without any real pay and I got a job as a producer for Nigeria International. It was an exciting TV show about Nigerian life around the world. We would film from Europe to the Americas, capturing a true balanced picture of life abroad whilst showing Nigerians abroad that life here wasn't as bad as they thought. It was aired on NTA Network, AIT Nigeria and US, Ben TV across Europe. I went ahead to produce for 'Living it with Moky' on MNET, for EXP Momentum, Amstel Malta Box Office, MTN, UBA and Arsenal amongst other productions. I also volunteered with a psychologist and counsellor who, at that time, was on TV and that was a great networking opportunity. Most importantly, the time (spent) with him helped me understand myself and that guided me to channel my energies right. I realised early in life that I wasn't a conventional person and so my life really can't be lived in a format. After secondary school, I took a long break doing all of these works, including 'The Future Awards/Project', 'Red Media' and several speaking engagements, including consulting with the African Union amongst others. I went ahead to study Journalism at the London School of Journalism coupled with Marketing and Communication trainings which armed me for my job at the moment. I sell. I was born to sell. I sell anything so I have the task of selling Y! Magazine, YNaija.com, The Future Awards, and all the projects under Red Media Group. It's huge but God's grace abounds.

If everyone could love their neighbour, if the people in government could love the people they rule, the world will be a better place.

'THE FUTURE AWARDS' HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE YOUNGER AND YOUTH-FOCUSED VERSION OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN NIGERIA. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE BEEN PART OF SUCH A POSITIVE MOVEMENT? I am grateful to God for the opportunity to fulfill purpose. 'The Future Project' has really and always been about inspiring leadership and building enterprise, especially within the Nigerian youth Continues on page 10

Sometimes I feel I came from a different generation because my values are so different — Chude Jideonwo H

OW DID YOU MEET DEBOLA WILLIAMS WITH WHOM YOU BUILT THE EMPIRE YOU BOTH ARE PART OF TODAY? Empire? That makes me smile and say 'amen'. I met Adebola at a recording of 'Inside Out with Agatha'. I was working for 'New Dawn with Funmi Iyanda' at the time but I had worked with Agatha and we got talking. I was impressed by the passion and his ambition; it wasn't un-identical to mine. He also had qualities that won my admiration an ability to speak to anyone and go anywhere. We began to meet and share ideas how to work on projects. I called him to help with a surprise birthday I organized for my boss, Funmi, and soon shared my vision of impacting young people on a larger scale through the media. It was a vision we both believed in and, soon, we had come together to form a company. It was serendipity, really.

awards. But as usual, we will be putting up a fantastic show; one that seamlessly merges pop, culture and inspiration. Last year, guests left fired up and inspired. This year, we are taking it a notch higher. It will be inspiring.

Y O U H A V E A N I N T E R E S T I N G E D U C AT I O N A L A N D CAREER BACKGROUND, TO SAY THE LEAST. WHICH WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN PIVOTAL TO YOUR GROWTH? Pivotal? The people I have met would be it. When I left secondary school in 2000, I was incredibly driven. In fact, when I remember how driven I was in those days, it frightens me now. The ability to be able to connect with people who would help me power that drive was priceless. I don't think there is any one thing. Like Jim Collins would say, it was a fly-well it keeps turning and turning until it gathers momentum and takes off. THE SPEECH YOU GAVE AT THE YOUTH DEBATE WITH THE PRESIDENT LAST YEAR RESOUNDED WITH MOST PEOPLE PRESENT AT THE EVENT AND FIRED UP A LOT OF HEARTS. WHAT TANGIBLE CHANGE CAME FROM THAT? I am very grateful that the message resonated far and that people connected with the message because it came from the heart. For impact, did you see 'Occupy Nigeria' in January? With 'Enough is Enough' and 'YNaija'? We were at the thick of driving that. You see, no one man can change a nation or, at least, that has never been my focus. It is about a generation. I have always been about collective effort and the power of numbers and always will be. If you remember the speech, I mentioned that we would not be easily impressed and we would be watching the government. Beyond watching, we said we would take action. Anyone expecting that action the day after doesn't understand the nature of movements. WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM THE 7TH SEASON OF 'THE FUTURE AWARDS'? We always under promise! We also say it's not about the awards only. It's a season. We have gone round the country for our town hall meets, done the spectacular business 'Master Class' last week, and the impact continues. Even after the awards, we will have the post-awards conference on enterprise. So it's a movement, not just about the

YOU HAVE TRAVELLED AROUND THE WORLD AND MET WITH YOUNG PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. WHAT ARE THE MAJOR SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM AND THE AV E R A G E N I G E R I A N YOUTH? Not much. It's really the uniqueness of particular situations. Generally, young people of this generation just want the opportunity and allowance to self-actualise. DO YOU EVER GET WEARY OF STANDING UP AGAINST INJUSTICE AND BUILDING A BETTER NIGERIA? SURELY, I T C A N N O T B E T H AT CAPTIVATING ON DAY-TODAY BASIS? Oh, I do get weary and very frequently (too). I will not be a hypocrite and say I am proud of my country everyday or I love my country everyday. The Dana air crash was one such point when I completely lost faith. The popular article I wrote, "We are just living like animals in this country" is still on YNaija and it encapsulates how deeply my despair sunk. It happens frequently. It happened when Otedola opened his record label and begun to churn out CDs. I don't comment on politics anymore because it is now moot; too many people do that already. But I do pay close attention constantly and many times I lose hope in our capacity to change course, to make good. But you see, I am Nigerian. It is my home. It is my love. I am irrevocably bound to it, so I find that much as I fight that almost maternal impulse, the next day I am driven again to do something; to make a small difference, to fight for the country I believe in, by dramatic civic action, by subtle nation building or by insistent value creation through entrepreneurship and the brands we have created. LAUDABLE EFFORTS? It has gotten a smattering of support from agencies here and there but government has only gone as far as identifying with us and for that we've worked with the ministries of education and youth, for instance. We are hopeful that they pay more attention to projects that actually make impact. But it's not necessarily a bad thing: sometimes government could be a distracting, maybe even corrosive influence. We are happy that our support has come from bottom up, and now we are independent enough and structured properly to get government support on our own terms, without compromising the values we believe in. That is really important. I know you have a strong journalistic background? Do you think it's a career that's fast fading among the upcoming generation? Continues on page 10

W H AT A R E Y O U R C O R E D E S I G N AT I O N S W I T H R E D MEDIA/THE FUTURE PROJECT? I market the ideas, products and platforms. I seal partnerships. I double on operations and execution of the ideas and strategy for the season. I have spear-headed the town hall meetings and road shows around Nigeria and internationally, in the UK and Ghana. I am responsible for the smooth running of the post-awards seminars and conferences amongst others. But then, when you are running a 360o firm like ours and 360 o because we are a full gamut media firm; we own, produce and manage content on both traditional and social media. We own, produce and manage events. We offer full service public relations and communications strategy under Red Media, with a deep understanding of digital media, demography marketing (especially youth) and vast on ground experience doing street activations, your scope if work is never really defined. WHAT DO YOU THINK A R E S O M E F U N D A M E N TA L ISSUES WITH NIGERIAN YOUTH TODAY AND WHAT STEPS CAN BE TAKEN TO CORRECT THEM? There is a deep sense of hopelessness and helplessness in the African child and that puts a limitation on their foresight and vision. There's a purposeful deprivation of education Debola...Young and information that people who value sets a yoke around hard work and them. It surely takes a achievement, lot of will power to define their work overcome these things, a lot of self motivation and discovery. I learnt to take charge of my life at 14 and that's why I am where I am now. If I had waited on government, family wealth or relatives, I definitely won't. I remember using my lunch money to go to auditions. I remember missing lesson classes and having to burn extra oil to go for recordings and be in a studio. I remember the first 'The Future Awards' when we were pasting posters ourselves at Maryland by 11pm and look at where it is now. You see, empathy is dead in our nation. (There is so much) Lack of love and value for human life and that leads to the chronicle of problems we experience daily in Nigeria. If we had leaders who truly cared or valued human life, many things that happen wouldn't. The living conditions wouldn't be in the state it is; the number of homeless people on the street might be less; children who go to government schools would be able to string together a simple English sentence; would have desks and chairs to sit; there would be less jobless people roaming the streets. Our generation needs to build the culture of value for human life and true love for our neighbours. It sounds almost like a clichĂŠ but that's all the world needs, really. We need to increase the stakes on the value of human life.

Chude Jideonwo Continued from page 9

Ah, yes it is. All I wanted to be, growing up, was a journalist. I intensely admired Dele Sobowale, Funmi Iyanda, Femi Ojudu and others. I wanted to pack my bags, tell the stories, influence conversation. Money was no object really. Times have really changed and I am not sure if for the better. Everyone wants to be a TV presenter or a radio presenter or a blogger. Sometimes, I feel so old or as if I came from a different generation because my values are so different from many but I think it's an evolution process; this crisis of ambition will terminate and many will appreciate the value of the profession. Though one must say that the poor pay journalists have to live with and the epidemic of owed salaries surely does not help. WHAT'S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE IN YOUR LIFE? Exercise, read, answer e-mails, (with over 1,000 mails per day, that is work!), do meetings, work, work, work, work, work, work, and then do fun stuff like the movies when I can. At all times also, I find space to talk to God. For now, an entrepreneur's life dwells on work. Building a business consumes you but it is also incredibly rewarding. WHEN YOU ARE NOT BUSY TRYING TO SAVE YOUTHS, EDIT A MAGAZINE, ORGANIZE AN EVENT OR PLAN SOME STRATEGY, WHAT DO YOU DO? Hmm. Well first, and this is important to me, I always try to make time to spend with God; because you know all things start and end with him. We are not always successful, but that has primacy. I am also a big television and movie person so the cinemas and my TV screen take my time. I don't like crowds much. I don't do parties. The n e c e s s a r y pretensions of living i n s o c i e t y s o m e t i m e s intimidate me. I like my quiet places. Matisse and O'jez are some of my favourite places to go to and observe life and living. And I'm constantly reading especially, 'Time' and 'Vanity Fair' magazines.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? The ability to accomplish. Not accomplishment for its sake or so I can hang it on a wall or walk a red carpet or be seen. It's accomplishment that actually makes a difference in the lives of my generation. All our work is about using the media to influence our generation for positive. That's the crux. We want to build a generation of the informed and the empowered. Every small and big step that we successfully take to accomplish that, keeps me going. That's truly it. The stories we hear, the passions we keep alive, the lives we change, the paradigms we shift. It's a beautiful world to make impact in, to accomplish

great things.

Ms Pearl of Wisdom

Ms Pearl Of Wisdom. Is she an agony aunt? Very often. Is this an etiquette column? Sometimes. Could it improve your sexual technique? Possibly. Does she have useful tips and hints? Yes. Let Ms Pearl of Wisdom handle all and any of your social and emotional dilemmas!! Dear Ms Pearl, My boyfriend is very jealous; he does not even want me to keep any male friends not even in my office which is not possible. What should I do? His jealousy will diminish if you follow these instructions very carefully; demand to see his phone every time you see him, change his home screen to a photograph of you and password to your name, make him call you at least 5 times an hour and send snaps of himself in weird poses as per your commands… Your male “friends” at the office should disappear at the same time too! Dear Ms Pearl, I am 30 years old with a 5 year old daughter, (her father and I separated shortly after her birth). Prior to her father I was with a guy but it wasn’t serious, however now we are back together and 2 years has passed already. The love gets hotter as each day passes however he is married with children and we both do not want to end our relationship. My parents love him and our friends know about us, I’m practically his second wife but with no ring. I want to have a child with him but don’t have to marry him and cannot imagine being with another man. What do I do? The story of a happy mistress had to happen someday. Congratulations! Dear Ms Pearl, My best friend told me that a girl can have sex without a condom and won't get pregnant, even when she is not in her period! I find this hard to believe, is this true? I’m a virgin (16) and really want to have sex with my boyfriend (17) for the first time and we both don't know how to use a condom. Please help me before I make a big mistake! Better to be safe than sorry so I suggest investing in a chastity belt. In the unlikely event of that happening, try Durex because you should be using condoms until the day you are married and refrain from taking any further sex related advice from other virgins. Dear Ms Pearl, My girlfriend only calls me when she needs sex, but whenever I express my desire to be with her, she just talks about work. Kindly help my emotions. Where is the value, does she know about your other hidden assets? ;)

From birth throughout her life every woman is developing a unique "sexual story" influenced by culture, gender, family of origin, and personal experiences. The "story" takes on the beliefs and meanings that she attributes to her sexuality. Couples must negotiate their personal "sexual stories" as they develop their own style of sexual communication and activity. This should be an ongoing process, since everyday life problems may get in the way of intimacy and sexuality. Job worries, pressures of juggling work and family, substance abuse, depression, and financial worries can all influence how you feel sexually. In our fast paced world, having a lot on your mind, as most people do, can get in the way even when you want to focus on being intimate. Over time psychological troubles can create biological problems and vice versa. It all starts to blur together so you can't even really pinpoint where the issues started. You just know you want help. How do you know when to seek help? It really depends on the woman and her partner. Sometimes a problem seems to go away pretty quickly on its own but, if this is something that is really worrying or frustrating you or your partner and does not seem to go away no matter what you try, or if you are experiencing considerable pain or discomfort, it may be time to consider professional help. How do you get help? The problem of FSD is real for millions of women. It's rarely a simple issue, because sexual pleasure and sexual distress involves a complex web of physical and emotional factors. First of all, have an honest discussion with your partner. Sexual pleasure is the result of mind/body cooperation between two people. Surveys confirm that the most satisfying sexual activity is the product of a caring, secure personal relationship. When one partner is dysfunctional, the other is affected as well. For example, a woman may interpret her partner's inability to have an erection as a sign that he no longer finds her attractive. This may not be so. He may just be having some emotional issues in other areas of his life such as work or finances that are not related to how he feels about his wife. A talk with one's partner can help to determine whether the problem is primarily physical or emotional. A good first step if you are experiencing problems is to recognize the problem and to seek the help of a doctor. Although sexual problems involve many issues, they're often treatable Communicating your concerns and understanding your anatomy and your body's normal physiologic response to sexual stimulation are important steps toward regaining your sexual health. Help is available through both individual or couples therapy. Many people will use a combination of the two. When a couple begins therapy, the therapist may refer one or both partners to a physician to rule out any medical conditions that could be contributing to the problem. The therapist or physician should fully inform you of the reasons for the medical procedure. A physician can also help with issues surrounding medication, like experimenting with the dosage of your medication to reduce sexual side effects. There are some hormonal treatments for women that are helpful during and after menopause. Therapy can help women, either alone or with a partner, who are experiencing sexual problems. Most therapists are used to talking to couples about their sexual lives and will not be embarrassed if you bring it up. The therapist is there to help the woman and her partner gain understanding of some of the relationship dynamics and background issues that may be influencing the problem. The therapist can also provide you with information about human sexuality and sexual functioning, and answer your questions.

. Lemon Whitening Recipes: If you want an inexpensive natural whitening agent, use lemons. These are natural sources of vitamin C. Cut a lemon and rub one of the wedges to the dark underarms. Let the juice dry. Do this twice a day. Alum also works for controlling sweat and may lighten the skin a bit. But use this with caution as it may irritate the skin of some women. Below are some techniques:

Dark underarms begone!!! PART II

Continued from last week

ark underarms can be a source of stress and embarrassment for many people, especially when women wear sleeveless tops which aren't just popular but are practical with our humidity and heat waves in Nigeria. However, identifying the possible causes for the problem and trying holistic remedies can help to ameliorate the condition. Dark underarms are a major concern for people with fair skin, as the dark armpits are more visible than for people with darker skin, that being said it's still an unpleasant sight be it dark or light skinned. One of the main reasons for dark underarms is hyper pigmentation of the skin. Some of the common causes include wearing tight fitting clothes and shaving of the underarm area, which also results in irritation that leads to post inflammatory hyper pigmentation. Well fear no more my dear readers, Teri to the rescue! Last week I went into detail on the causes of such dark skin, this week we continue with some simple tips on how to do

away with that dark skin! So, what is the most effective and safest way to treat dark underarms? The best answer would be to visit your dermatologist, because you need an expert to tell you what's causing the darkening and the most effective way to achieve white armpits. This is also because; whitening your underarm may take some time. It needs dedication and discipline on your part to achieve what you want. Armpit peeling is just one of the treatments being done by the dermatologist. A peeling solution is used to remove the outer layer of the skin. After the peeling is done, you need to put bleaching agents for applying every night at home. Another treatment is armpit bleaching. Some people go straight to this treatment, but it is strongly recommended by dermatologists that one has to undergo peeling first before the bleaching. With all that said, there are many natural and inexpensive ways that you can lighten dark underarms.

Lemon and Honey with Alum leave-on lemon and alum. Cut lemon crosswise and remove seeds. After taking a bath, rub the lemon on the armpit. Then, using a circular motion, rub powdered alum on armpits. Leave on.

Tips to Lighten Dark Underarms

Turmeric Powder & Cucumber Paste: Another old-school remedy used in the Middle East is a paste of 1 teaspoon lime juice, a pinch of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of cucumber juice applied to the area for 20 minutes daily can

Honey & lemon Alone: Mix 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon honey. Apply mixture to the armpits. Let it stay for about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Do this before taking a bath. You may also pat on some powdered

1

. Waxing: One option is waxing to remove unwanted hair and prevent skin darkening. Shave less often can reduce underarm darkening, this is because when shaving, the skin beneath is removed and the new skin is exposed which darkens when your underarms sweat, however with waxing the hair is pulled from the roots without damaging the skin beneath

2

. Safe Underarm Whitening Creams: There are safe cream for the skin that might be able to help lighten your dark underarms. Your underarms may go back to its normal skin tone with treatments like lighteners, but to maintain it, you will have to eliminate all the other factors causing skin to darken. If your deodorant is irritating your skin, ditch it in the trash can now. Laser hair removal is also an option to avoid plucking and shaving, and it promises to rid you of unwanted hair for the rest of your life. It can even smoothen

3

. Baking Soda & Apple Cider Vinegar Mix: Once this is done you will notice bubbling. Just wait for it to stop and then apply the mixture to your underarms. Dry and wash off. Wash and dry your underarms and then apply just apple cider vinegar. Do not rinse off. Repeat for a number of weeks.

I hope you were able to try some of these tips let me know how you get on; I know many readers were eager to read this piece I hope it was worth the wait! For comments and questions please email terimendes@gmail.com, I would love to hear from you, till next week it's ta ta for now!

TERI SPEAKS Hi Teri, I am a regular reader of your column in Vanguard Allure. You're doing a very good job. More grease!!! Please I really need your help. I have chocolate complexion naturally. I am not too fair, neither am I dark. Can you please advise me on a good body cream for an all over even skin tone? I used one cream that adversely affected my skin, and left a dark patch under my left eye. Kindly recommend a cream to remove the dark patch under my eye too. I look forward to your reply. Thank you so much. Adesola

By wearing loose fitting clothes made of natural fabric like cotton and not polyester one may reduce friction and absorb sweat better.

Dear Adesola, Thank you for writing in. Shea butter and almond oils are always enriching and great for smoothing out blemishes or uneven skin tone. I like the Palmers range; however any good pharmacy or supermarket would sell creams with almond oil and/or shea butter. Regarding your face, I always say it's best to use a different moisturizer for your face. One specifically for the face and not the whole body, as the body moisturizer may be too heavy for your face. Any eye cream containing vitamins C and E are essential anti-aging ingredients. While vitamin C aids in collagen production and skin elasticity, vitamin E soothes and protects. For the dark patch, try applying a little concentrated shea butter (Ori) at night only after washing your face. You could also try a homemade face mask containing mashed avocado, lemon, a little olive oil and some cumin. Mix all together and spread evenly on a freshly washed face and wait for 30minites before washing off. Let me know how you get on. Best wishes, Teri.

For comments and questions please email terimendes@gmail.com, I would love to hear from you, till next week it's ta ta for now! XOXO

Skin can be lightened by rubbing a lemon, potato or cucumber slice which has a bleaching effect. Just rub it on the darkened skin, leave it for a while then rinse off. After showering, apply baking powder to the dark underarms then rinse off to soothe and lighten the skin. Application of Vitamin E is also effective in clearing the skin discoloration. Wash your underarms with soap and warm water. Poor hygiene can cause dirt and oil to accumulate. Avoid too much use of hair removing creams and eventually you will notice that your underarms will start to lighten. These hair removing agents contain acids that can darken the skin.

God will bring your builders and comforters to you!

I

t was my birthday anniversary on 20th July. When I look back, I realize I have so much to thank God for. Recently, after a course abroad, I became the first African to be certified to use 'Social Style and Versatility'. It is the best tool now used for 'personal and inter-personal effectiveness in personal life, work, career, marriage, etc. It helps in such areas as coaching, handling conflicts, understanding and applying emotional intelligence, raising teams that work, etc. I have also become an Associate of the TRACOM Group (Creator of Social Style and Versatility), USA. Now, I am qualified to train Nigerians and Africans in use of Social Style and Versatility for organizations, schools, churches, marriages, government, etc. Some years back, while a Lagos-based consulting firm had taken DISC (a personal profiling tool) to organizations in Nigeria, I took it to schools and churches in Ghana and Nigeria. Today, so many Nigerians know about DISC. I also have not met any Nigerian who can facilitate/teach the MBTI like I do. I say this in all humility and gratitude to God. Being an expert in facilitating use of DISC and MBTI, I am so intrigued and fascinated at the “Social Style and Versatility” because it makes you more observing of others, more interested in others and less judgmental of others. It gives you capacity to bend without becoming bent and spent. It simply helps you to work better with others as it helps you to: 1) Know yourself 2) Control yourself 3) Know others, and 4) Do something for others. Social Style and Versatility is the best to come. so far. While DISC was originated in the 1920s, MBTI in the 1950s, Social Style and Versatility came in the 1960s and has been developed and researched upon continually to make it remain the most relevant and best inter-personal tool you will ever need to get the best performance from people at work, in church, at school, and also in raising effective people. Talking about effective people, I have been privileged to meet some personally. Sometime ago, when I fell into the sin of adultery, I lost everything. You see, I am not as lucky as some of you who live in sin yet seem to get away with it. I am too blessed not to face consequences of sin. I am a son of God indeed. God will not permit sin to wreck my life, so He chastises me when I sin so I can learn to see sin for what it is: destructive and reckless. When I lost everything in 1997, God said to me: “In the day I will rebuild your walls, I will extend your boundaries”. He also told me that my builders will return and my destroyers shall be forced to leave. When it was time for the Lord to fulfill His Word, the Lord visited me as He had said and the Lord did for me as He had spoken. He removed the odour of adultery from me and put on me the fragrance of a son and I began to smell like the field that the Lord has blessed. He gave me the dew of heaven and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. He asked that I be served by people and that nations should bow before me; that I be lord over my brethren and that my mother's children bow before me. He said cursed is anyone who curses me, Jerome, and that blessed is anyone who blesses me. One by one, God began to bring my builders into the scene. He started with Pastor Sam Adeyemi who looked into my eyes and said, “Jerome, I believe in you”, when everyone else had stopped believing in me. Sam Adeyemi did not just say “I believe in you”, but also gave me letters of recommendation to places, knowing I could still mess up and`put his own name on the line. Sam Adeyemi did not only recommend me in Nigeria, but also in the United Kingdom. Then there was Rev. Fred Degbee who brought me into Accra, Ghana; David Blake Boachie and Kojo Oppong Adjei of Sunny 88.7FM in Kanda, Accra who gave me a platform that stole the hearts of people in Accra as they heard my voice continually on radio talking about relationships. Then, from one surprise to another came Adora Ifezue whom I had met when I was in Ife. She kept on asking me to be a guest on Segun Arinze's show on AIT until she got me there. Then Segun Arinze said Agatha Amata needed me on “Inside Out”. I later went back to Accra only for someone in Accra to say he had just finished watching me on television and I found later that “Inside Out” was on cable TV. I came back for another recording when Chude Jideonwo invited me for “New Dawn with Funmi Iyanda”. Funmi Iyanda asked me to become a counsellor on “New Dawn” when it was on NTA Chanel 10. Two weeks later, it went on NTA Network and the whole of Nigeria started seeing my show. Later, NTA went on satellite and the whole world started watching me, and yet my builders kept on multiplying as God kept on increasing my boundaries. It then became obvious that for every new builder, there was an increase in boundary for me. My boundaries were extended to Abuja through Yinka and Shade Tonade; into MNET through Mo Abudu; into the Prints Media through Toyin Eriye and Shola Oshunkeye. Remmy Diagbare extended my boundaries into 'Vanguard Allure' and into the lives of all of you who read “Get Captivated” every Sunday. Alongside builders, God also brought me comforters like Pastor Nike Adeyemi, Pastor Ayo Daniels, Stella Damasus, Yinka Davies, Gloria Ese Olotu, Toyin Atalabi, Beatrice Egbarin-Olutayo and my very own Adebola Williams. It's amazing how God is undoing all that afflict me, giving me praise and fame in all the places that I have been put to shame; turning back my captivity before my very eyes. Isn't God who keeps His word worthy of our praise? For all of you who rejoice with me today, joy will never cease in your homes. You will live with increase without limits in your homes and that which God has promised you, He will perform speedily in Jesus Name, Amen.

EAT YOUR WAY TO SUPER CHARGED ENERGY! KATHY EMIKO

H

ealth News 101: Keep blood sugar steady with oranges: Folks who eat the most vitamin C-rich foods are 62% less likely to develop type-2 diabetes than those who eat the least. The link? Foods high in vitamin C are generally nutritious fruits and vegetables that combat obesity (a risk factor for disease). Body Perfect 101: The only way to keep your health in good shape is to eat what you don't like, and do what you rather not do! Always exhausted, and not sure why? Turns out, more women have mild, undiagnosed, energy snapping shortfalls in essential nutrients! The good news: Those short falls are easy to pinpoint and cure! 1. Too tired to concentrate? You need boron! USDA research reveals that this rarely noticed mineral is essential for the production of energizing brain waves! Too low levels are linked to fatigue and concentration woes. Solution: ½ cup of boron rich Almonds or hazelnuts daily can correct a boron deficiency in as little as two weeks. 2. Tired, forgetful and blue? You need B12! Four in 10 women are low in vitamin B12 one of the first signs is fatigue because B12 helps your body convert food for energy! Your risk of being low in B12 increases if you take medications or treat heartburn, cholesterol or diabetes or if you've a vegetarian or vegan. Since the main food sources of B12 are meat, seafood and dairy. Solution: A daily 1,000mcg dose of b12 can restore your energy in as little as three weeks. 3. Tired and acne prone? You need zinc! For up to 56% of fatigued women, a deficiency of zinc a mineral that's essential for dozens of energizing chemical reactions in the body could be to blame. Solution: 30mg of zinc daily at bedtime when stomach acid (which helps maximize zinc absorption) is at its peak. 4. Tired and overly anxious? You need vitamin C. One in three of us are deficient in this nutrient and fatigue in combination with anxiety is a top-tip off. Your adrenal glands need vitamin C to produce adrenalin and other rev you up hormones, so when you run low, your energy level can plunge. Solution: One heaping cup of any citrus fruit daily can boost your energy levels and ease your anxiety. 5. Tired and muscle wearing? You need iron! At least 16% of us are low on iron a problem that cuts energy levels in half, even if full blown anemia hasn't set in. even a mild iron shortage saps the ability of your cells to absorb and use energizing oxygen. Solution: 4oz of iron rich beef or poultry daily could erase your symptoms within three months.

Dear Kathy, I don't know what happened to me; I thought I was suppose to lose some weight while on detox, but I gained weight; why? Am worried. Benita, Jos. Dear Benita, First and foremost was it a self imposed detox? Or an expert placed you or a detox? Always seek expect care for a detox. Now, many first time detoxers eliminate all healthy fat sources during a cleanse. Why that's a mistake; Essential fatty acids attract fat soluble toxins logged in cells and usher them out of the body. Without enough healthy fats, you are more likely to experience signs of toxic buildup, including headaches, fatigue, bloat and even weight gain. To combat these symptoms, simply take at least 1 table spoon of omega-3-rich flax-seed oil or fish oil per day during your detox. Also smart: Stair 1 tablespoon of Chia seeds or ground flax-seed into one or two of your juices every day. This will add fiber, which helps move stagnant waste out of the digestive tract to combat bloat and constipation. Need a good detox to help weight gain? Try the “Body Perfect Miracle Detox” (08132164772). Got over 5kg, 10kg, 15kg or 20kg to lose? Jump start it with “Brown Rice Miracle Diet” (08034535819).
