he came into limelight twelve years ago, when she was presented to Nigerians as Chief Okoya's youngest wife. A young, beautiful MAU Lagos student who hit the billionaire below belt, many waited for the fuse to burn out. But years later, the flame is still on while Shade herself has matured. After four children and the contentment that comes with a good life, Shade exudes charm, elegance and confidence. Recently, she marked her thirty-fifth birthday without the shenanigans that would normally accompany a landmark in the life of a woman at her level. She chose, instead, to give to charity and to celebrate low-key. Shade spoke with Latasha Ngwube on turning 35 and living The Life. On our fashion pages, Fatima shows how to navigate the trends now while Yemisi Suleiman gives ideas on how to rock two current trends, floral and colour block. Hope you like? Have a great week! lessed with four children from her loving union to Chief Okoya, it’s clear that Shade’s adoration and passion for husband has not waned for one second over the years of marriage. Instead, if anything, they are a close, loving and affectionate couple, whose love for each other transcends their age difference or mindset. Meeting Shade in her beautiful palatial home, I am struck by her fondness for fresh flowers everywhere and an uncanny sense of tidiness. Her home is immaculate, crisp and sweet smelling. Upon asking her, she simply remarks that beautiful fresh flowers make her happy. Watching her through the photo shoot, her soft voice gently beckons to whomever she speaks to with the grace of royalty. Never raising her voice, never losing her composure, but I hear the unmistakable quiet steel as she speaks and I have no doubt that as a business woman she would be no pushover. In this interview, Allure’s Latasha Ngwube gets up close and personal with the beautiful and ever youthful Folashade Okoya to open up on her life, her marriage, business and how she maintains her fantastic physique…

I work in a family business which deals in manufacturing, property development and management. The manufacturing section is called Eleganza Group of Companies and the property development aspect is what we all know as RAO Investment Property Company Limited. This will also create a lot of job opportunities for the people of Epe/Ibeju communities and its environs. We hope by the grace of God that production will start at the end of the year. YOU CLEARLY HAVE A GOOD GRASP OF THE BUSINESS AND WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF EVERYTHING IT ENTAILS. Missed Manners 2

osun was a stylish young man (or so he thought). He actually thought he was ‘the last word in cool’. He was quite excited when he got invited to his boss’s home for dinner. He felt he had finally arrived . He showed up looking nice and cool. He was wined and dined. Two weeks later another invitation came for dinner at the boss’ home, but this time it did not include him. A month later, another invitation came for his colleagues. Again it did not include him. Now he was getting worried. Hmmm…and promotion time was creeping closer every day… A recent survey uncovered a lack of basic etiquette knowledge. 45 percent of those surveyed never sent a thank you note after an invitation to a meal, or receiving a gift; 70 % of respondents had never brought a gift for the host or hostess when visiting someone’s home; and 40 percent of respondents never send wedding gifts when they could not attend. Good manners and proper etiquette are at the very core of how we communicate with one another. We need to develop and reinforce those essential courtesies that make our relationships strong, valuable and longlasting. Here are some etiquette tips, which are easy to incorporate into everyday life: 1. Turn the cell phone off — completely – or leave in the silent mode during a luncheon meeting, social function, or on public transportation. 2. Hold the door — whether male or female, hold open a door you have just passed through for the person behind you. 3. Bring a gift for the hostess – nothing expensive, just something thoughtful. 4. Keep to the r ght — on the sidewalk, in stairwells. 5. Say please and thank you — to waiters, flight attendants, store clerks, cab drivers — these little things go a long way. 6. Circulate at a party or social gathering — whether host/hostess or guest, the people, not the food or drink, should be your main focus. 7. At gatherings, keep food or drink, briefcases or files in your left hand — keep your right hand free for handshakes. 8. Stamp iand address thank you notes in advance — when you know they will be needed, then fill them out and drop them in the mail after attending an event or receiving a gift or favor and you’ll be done. 9. Make eye contact and offer a warm smile — in every situation, this gets people comfortable and at ease. 10. Be perceptive, be discerning — survey a situation and always use your best judgment.”Now, more than ever, you need to observe the basic rules of etiquette. Great manners never go out of style, and with great manners, you will always win the hearts and minds of those around you. Until next week, show courtesy to those around you, live graciously, and put your best foot

Ms Pearl Of Wisdom. Is she an agony aunt? Very often. Is this an etiquette column? Sometimes. Could it improve your sexual technique? Possibly. Does she have useful tips and hints? Yes. Let Ms Pearl of Wisdom handle all and any of your social and emotional dilemmas!!

Dear Ms Pearl, I have been seeing a mature well respected business man that I absolutely adore but he only makes himself available when it suits him. When I try to tell him we should see more of each other and make time to do it he replies with “I don’t a relationship to take over my life” or to “rush”. It’s been six months already! My friends are really bad at advising, some it is sensible because he is a serious person, and others say he is selfish. What do you think? It’s time to face the facts: he doesn’t fancy you very much so walk away from this failing relationship in a dignified manner. That will show him who is in control!

Dear Ms Pearl, Why is it that as soon as I mention I am broke, women immediately run from me? Ironically, up until this time they all swear that they are madly in love with me and are in a huge hurry to take the vows for richer and for poorer until death do us part. Am I missing something? It amazes me how anyone could have thought men were the superior sex.

Dear Ms Pearl, I cannot seem to satisfy any of the women in my life. You are clearly fulfilled, can you offer me any tips? Mr. Wisdom and I have found there is no substitute for practice. Practice and more practice. On your own if necessary.

Dear Ms Pearl, What’s so special about Brazilian girls? Do they enjoy a better sex life? No. But I’m sure their husbands and boyfriends do. Send problems to: Ms Pearl of Wisdom, pearlofwisdom.allure@gmail.com The best problem wins a prize (Editors choice).

nfertility is an alarming modern epidemic affecting more couples than ever. 1 out of 6 couples today experience difficulty falling pregnant. What was once seen as a woman’s problem is now known to affect men equally. The natural approach to treating infertility solves the root causes of infertility, by addressing all body systems, rather than just focusing solely on the reproductive system. Many couples that can’t become pregnant suffer from a combination of sub-clinical conditions. These conditions can’t cause infertility on their own but — in combination — they can substantially reduce a couple’s probability of conceiving. For example; gluten intolerance alone cannot cause infertility; however, the resulting inflammation in the gut can minimize your nutrient absorption and lead to deficiencies in nutrients you need for optimal sperm, egg and hormone production and a healthy pregnancy. Exposure to heavy metals, radiation, and toxic chemicals in some foods, drugs and other products can damage DNA. Recent nutrigenomic (a study of the effects of nutrients on gene expression) research suggests what we eat can influence our gene structure and expression. Minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals Exposure to environmental toxins (in the form of industrial chemicals) both in utero and neonatally may dramatically affect adult fertility. Most chemicals used in everyday life do not go through the same checks medicines do. Consequently, poisonous chemicals end up circulating in our environment, food supply, air and water. The strongest evidence of heavy metals and environmental pollution adversely interfering with healthy reproductive function in women has been found for lead. Other compounds that can alter hormone function and result in adverse reproductive health effects include: Ovotoxicants, which can disrupt or even stop ovulation. Endocrine disruptors may interfere with hormone function and cause endometriosis and PCOS Phthalates: in plastic food containers, cling wrap, IV bags, medical supplies, vinyl flooring and packaging at high levels have been associated with miscarriage and testicular toxicity. At low levels they disrupt hormonal balance. VCH chemicals: used in rubber tires, plastics and pesticides. PAH released from cigarettes, car fumes and road tar Men are not spared Sperm seems to be more sensitive to heavy metals and industrial pollutants than eggs. Many sperm abnormalities have been linked to these toxins. The majority of these chemicals can be found in the atmosphere, on the ground in cities and in the waterways. They have also been termed “reprotoxicants” for their negative effects on sperm development and maturation. Studies confirm male sperm counts are declining, and environmental factors, such as pesticides, exogenous estrogens (Xenoestrogens), and heavy metals may negatively impact spermatogenesis (formation of sperm). The top 6 environmental toxins to avoid: 1. Pesticides found on non-organic fruit and vegetables meat, dairy and unfiltered tap water 2. Formaldehyde found in air freshener’s deodorants, floor polish, upholstery cleaners 4. Organic solvents: petroleum based liquids found in household products, electronics, car repair, health care, photography, agriculture, printing, construction and cosmetics. Dry- cleaning chemicals, paint fumes and many more. Occasional exposure to o n e o r t h e o t h e r toxic chemical is not of concern. What is of concern is accumulation of these chemicals over a long period. 5. Don’t drink unfiltered tap water. Our waterways are constantly being polluted by industrial waste and byproducts, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides and herbicides and commercial cleaning products. There are many companies polluting the water regardless of the country you live in. Either there is no environmental law at all, or there are loopholes in the law or there is no law for the XYZ chemical getting into the water. 6. Heavy metals are the most common of the reprotoxins reaching our water supply through industrial waste, jet fuel exhaust residue and a variety of other sources. Pharmaceutical drugs are commonly found in tap water. 74 percent of the US population takes prescription drugs. Because the drugs do not metabolize fully, small quantities are excreted via feces and urine and flushed away. Toilet water is often treated and filtered before being discharged into lakes

Prof. Oladapo Ashiru OFR CEO-MART-LIFE detox clinic 2 Olatubosun Street,

and rivers thereby re-entering the water supply. The trouble is, many drugs are not filtered out via the regular filtration process. Minute quantities of chemotherapy drugs, contraceptive pills, antidepressants, anxiolitics, anabolic steroids, HRT (hormone replacement therapy), heart drugs etc. have been found in tap water. The pollutants are worse in Nigeria. Use a dual filtration system. Buy a dual filtration water system that filters particles smaller than 1 micron (this will filter out the drugs as well as heavy metals). Use the filter in your shower and your kitchen. Shower steam contains the same chemicals, which you can end up inhaling and can be absorbed through your skin. Aim to eat an optimal fertility diet In the first trimester of pregnancy your growing embryo will increase 20 million times. In the first 8 weeks your baby’s organs, hands, fingers, legs, feet, head, eyes, nose, ears etc. are being constructed. To ensure the best possible foundations are laid down during this phase, you want to make sure there are plenty of building blocks in the form of the right nutrients in the right combinations. What does a fertility diet contain? An optimal fertility diet is about what to avoid as much as it is about what to include. A fertility diet should be as fresh as possible and organic wherever possible. Key elements are: good quality protein sources (favor vegetable sources of protein) and good fats. What should you eat? Organic meat in small quantities, game, small deep-sea fish like sardines and red snapper, organic legumes home cooked (not canned). Whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruit in season, organic where possible. Increase your consumption of good fats and avoid dangerous fats. Good fats include mono-unsaturated fats in olive oil, polyunsaturated fats in oily fish and nuts and m i d - c h a i n fatty acids found in coconut oil. For cooking use clarified butter (ghee) or coconut butter (without flavor) as they do not become unstable when heated. For non-heated oil requirements (salads etc.,) use cold pressed olive oil, flaxseed oil and nut oils. Avoid dangerous fats Did you know — consuming trans fats hidden in foods such as; doughnuts, biscuits, lollies, candy, chocolate, chips, pies, fries, take away and thousands of other foods may increase your risk of infertility by as much as 70 percent? Scientists fr o m the Harvard University School of Public Health advise women wanting to get pregnant to avoid all trans fats. The sole purpose of adding trans fats to food is to extend its shelf life. To minimize your consumption of trans fats be diligent about reading the ingredients and avoid the most likely culprits altogether. Trans fats are mostly listed as’ hydrogenated fat’ or ‘hardened vegetable fat’ or simply ‘vegetable fat.’ Minimize animal- derived estrogens Dairy products account on average for 60-70 percent of estrogens consumed. Humans consume milk from cows in the second half of pregnancy when cow’s estrogen levels are high. We usually associate dairy and drinking milk with calcium, and never think about what else we may be consuming along with the calcium (and dairy, by the way is not the best source of calcium). Here is a list of hormones that have been found in cows’ milk: Prolactin, Somatostatin, Melatonin, Oxytocin, Growth hormone, Lutenizing releasing hormone, Thyroid stimulating hormone, Estrogens, Progesterone, Insulin, Corticosteroids and many more Do you think an excess consumption of all these hormones could disrupt your own hormonal balance? You bet! Consumption of ‘ milk has been linked to certain cases of male infertility. Excess estrogen and pesticide exposure has been linked to PCOS and Endometriosis. Studies have found higher concentrations of pesticides in cheese than in nonorganically grown fruit and vegetables. The first line of naturopathic treatment I recommend for PCOS and Endometriosis is to minimize intake of animal products. Animal products have a high content of hormones, pesticides and herbicides, which are known endocrine disruptors. They play havoc with your hormones and this can lead to anovulation which is having your period but not ovulating, that is not producing any eggs. To be continued.

ello readers, today’s edition is back on health and on Eggs – in particular “the yolk or the white” which is better? Many foods contain eggs in their preparation such as pancakes, meringues, French toast, as well as eating eggs in itself as a meal from an omelet, poached eggs to scrambled eggs. However, as scrumptious and nutritious as eggs and its yolk may be, (containing lutein, vitamin A and vitamin B-12), it also contains fat, cholesterol and calories. For health reasons, no more than 2 -3 egg yolks a week should be consumed. Substituting egg yolks for whites can be

extremely beneficial to not just our health but also our lifestyle. Egg whites are a convenient and low-caloried way to add egg protein to your diet, without overloading your calorie or fat consumption and not needing to worry about how many times a week you consume it. Below are 4 main benefits of eating egg whites. We then see Healthy Living 101 “The Hard Facts©” showing a comparative composition of yolks and whites. This just reinforces the fact that after a certain age (preferably 15 years and above), egg yolks should be reduced in our diet.

EGG WHITES Vs EGG YOLK: The real deal behind it!

4 Benefits of Egg Whites 1.Low Calories A whole egg contains roughly 5 g of fat, 1.6 g of which is saturated. An egg white contains just trace amounts of fat and no saturated fat. It also contains no cholesterol, while the yolk provides about 186 to 210 mg. The American Heart Association recommends keeping your cholesterol intake below 300 mg per day. People with high cholesterol or on cholesterol-lowering medications should consume no more than 200 mg per day. Choosing boiled egg whites allows you to indulge in other cholesterol-containing

foods during the day without fear of exceeding healthy limits.

2. 0% Cholesterol An egg is full of cholesterol, with a single, large egg weighing in with nearly as much cholesterol recommended in your full day’s diet, by eating only the egg white you’re instantly removing the eggs’ notoriously detrimental element especially if you have high cholesterol levels.

3. High Protein According to the American Hearts Association, egg whites are one of the top sources of protein, ranking up there with lean meat, poultry and fish. More than half of a full egg’s protein comes from the white. A single egg white offers 4 g of protein without the yolk’s fat and other detriments. This in tow can reduce your risk of heart disease.

4. Potassium & Vitamins According to studies, potassium is an essential mineral required to help the

heart beat rhythmically, transmit nerve signals and balance the amount of fluid in the body. Adequate potassium in your diet helps regulate your blood pressure. One large boiled egg white provides 54 mg of potassium to your daily intake. Egg whites also provide riboflavin and selenium. Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B-2, helps you metabolize carbohydrates, fats and protein. It supports a healthy nervous system and appearance. Selenium is a trace mineral that acts as an antioxidant, destroying disease-causing free radicals in our bodies.

EGG WHITE SEPERATOR So when you’re about to make your next fry – up, French toast, omelet, meringue, pancakes or quiche Lorraine think about the calories you would be saving by reducing the yolk and using more of the egg white, that way you have created a happy medium whereby you still get a bit of the taste LESS the calories and cholesterol! Hi Teri,

Dear Bisola,

I am a regular reader of your column in Vanguard Allure. You’re doing a very good job. More grease!!! Please I really need your help. I have chocolate complexion naturally. I am not too fair, neither am I dark. Can you please advise me on a good body cream for an all over even skin tone? I used one cream that adversely affected my skin, and left a dark patch under my left eye. Kindly recommend a cream to remove the dark patch under my eye too. I look forward to your reply. Thank you so much.

Thank you for writing in. Shea butter and almond oils are always enriching and great for smoothing out blemishes or uneven skin tone. I like the Palmers range; however any good pharmacy or supermarket would sell creams with almond oil and/or shea butter. Regarding your face, I always say it’s best to use a different moisturizer for your face. One specifically for the face and not the whole body, as the body moisturizer may be too heavy for your face. Any eye cream containing vitamins C and E are essential anti-aging ingredients. While

For comments and questions please email terimendes@gmail.com, I would love to hear from you, till next week it’s ta ta for now! XOXO You can follow me on twitter @terimendes vitamin C aids in collagen production and skin elasticity, vitamin E soothes and protects. For the dark patch, try applying a little concentrated shea butter (Ori) at night only after washing your face. You could also try a homemade face mask containing mashed avocado, lemon, a little olive oil and some cumin. Mix all together and spread evenly on a freshly washed face and wait for 30mins before washing off. Let me know how you get on. Best wishes,

ody Perfect 101: A real insurance plan is one in which you take responsibility for own health by educating yourself and taking action on a daily basis. Of all the numbers swimming in our heads, “ATM cards pin, husbands, shoe size, precise number of calories in a scoop of ice cream”, the digits that probably gives the most grief is our weight; and whatever the weight is now, there is a special number that plagues us nearly as much: WHAT YOU WANT TO WEIGH, i.e. your mythical perfect body weight. Our ideal body might be inspired by a picture we saw on a magazine cover or by your own too skinny friend who eats a bowl of rice and fried plantain daily and never gain weight, but here is what we need to remember: your body is unique and you need to find a realistic number that is acceptable for you. Your perfect body weight will take into accounts your height, bone structure, muscle mass, age, and breast size, as well as your fathers/mother’s weight.

H “ ello, is that Mr. Jerome?” She said on the phone, and I answered yes, this is Jerome,”Oh, thank God she said, I had prayed you will be the one to pick your call”. I usually pick my calls myself, not because I always want to, but because I realize people are more comfortable talking to me directly, especially for the fact that most of my calls are emergency calls. I have realized that most people wait till the last minute before they look for or call for a Counselor. Sometimes they do so when nothing can be done about the situation again, and that is not to say I am not a positive person, but just to say those who know how to make use of opportunities available to them always have a way of saving their day. The best time to visit a Counselor is when you don’t have a problem, and not just when you have one. A visit to the Counselor helps keep unnecessary problems out of your life.

A

s we spoke on the phone, I had a leading to ask her to come and see me at the office, and for those of you who know my procedures, you will realize that I just don’t ask you to come over and see me at the office, there is usually first things first. She told me she will make it in an hour, and that was exactly what she did which I considered quite impressive, knowing she was coming from a distance. As soon as she settled down, she just started crying saying “it was my entire fault, it was my entire fault”, she kept on repeating that over and over again, and I kept on asking what exactly she meant. When she finally got herself together, she said my husband says she doesn’t want the marriage anymore, and it was my entire fault.

F

elicia then told me the story that made me wonder why we most times allow fear to interfere with our destinies. Felicia had met Nicholas, both of them from Kogi State in 2008. They had both worked in the same place outside of the FCT, when Nicholas later mover over to the FCT where he got a better job. In 2009, they met again, and also started attending the same Church. At that point they hit it off, and started a relationship proper which was also sexual, though they were both workers in the Church, and they decided to get married. They got married in July 2011, and had a lovely baby boy, which is a great joy, because there are so many marriages in Nigeria that is yet to be blessed with fruit of the womb. The baby came and also with some other packages; he was HIV Positive, and also with the SS genotype. The SS genotype is understandable in the situation because Felicia is SS as well, but the HIV, now that was something of concern. Tests were run on Nicholas and Felicia, and Nicholas came out as Negative while Felicia came out as Positive. That brought up a lot of confusion, because Nicholas didn’t have a clue that this was the situation. He asked Felicia for an explanation, but she said she didn’t know she was positive, and couldn’t make sense out of what was going on as well. And at that point Nicholas comforted her, and made a promise that he was going to stand by her, and their child. They struggled to keep the baby alive, but the baby later died in March 2012, and may his soul rest in peace. Nicholas and Felicia were devastated. In the process of grieving, Nicholas kept on asking Felicia if she was HIV positive before they met, and she kept on saying no, and how could she have been positive before they met, and they have been having sex since 2009 and he is not. That sounds reasonable and so he stopped asking for a while, but something in him just couldn’t take it and he kept on asking again. THREE STEPS TO CALCULATING YOUR PERFECT WEIGHT: To determine the body weight that is right for you, we are going to look at three different measures: baseline weight goal (or roughly what you should weight, based on your height), bone structure and overall body fat percentage. Here is how to figure each one: 1. WHAT IS THE RIGHT WEIGHT FOR YOUR HEIGHT? a) Measure your height. b) If you are over 5 feet, take the number of inches over and multiply that by 5. Add 100 to this number, and that will give you an idea of how much you should weight. c) If you are 5 feet tall or shorter, use 100 pounds as your baseline. NOTE: To convert pounds into kilograms (kg), divide by 2.2 e.g 100 pounds is 100 ÷ 2.2 = 45.5kg. Remember, this baseline is a rough estimate. But it does serve as a critical number for the other equations that come next. 2. WHAT IS YOUR FRAME SIZE? The idea of being “big boned” is not just something concocted to make you feel good. Your inner structure can run large or small no matter how tall you are. Being big boned can add as much as 10 pounds to baseline weight goal, and those are pounds that you will never be able to lose. Figure out your frame size by measuring the circumference of your wrist with a flexible measuring tape, and then compare that number with the following chart. HEIGHT WRIST CIRCUMFERENCE FRAME SIZE Under 5.5" Under 5.5"Under 6"Under 6.25" SmallMediumLarge 5.2"- 5.5" 5.5"– 5.75"6" – 6.25"6.25"–6.5" SmallMediumLarge Over 5.5" Over 5.75"Over 6.25"Over 6.5" SmallMediumLarge If you have a large frame, add 10 pounds to your baseline, if you have a small frame, subtract 5 pounds. And if you have a medium frame size, do not adjust your weight calculator.
