U
ntil a few weeks ago, she was the Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Edo State. That was her second appointment, having served once as Commissioner for Culture and Tourism under the Lucky Igbinedion administration. Born to the prominent Idahosa Osifo family of Edo State, this mother of three boys, holds a first degree in Economics and a Statistics and a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Banking and Finance all from the University of Benin. She was also at the Harvard Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s John F Kennedy School of Government, USA, where she took a course in Innovations in Government. After a stint at Allied Bank and later Crown Merchant Bank, curious to know what banking was like abroad, she moved to the USA, where she worked for the Mortgage Solutions, Schaumburg, Illinois. While living in Chicago, she read a lot about the 1995 United Nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beijing Conference. Coupled with inspiration drawn from Hillary Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exploits in politics, Hon. Omorede Osamede Osifo decided to return home to join the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s struggle through political relations. In 2000, she joined the People Democratic Party (PDP) where she cut her teeth in politics Now in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the two-time commissioner was recently honoured by the Oba of Benin, who presented her with the Royal Beads.

I contested in 2002/2003 for the House of Representatives. I should have won that election because on the day of the primaries, I had about 90% of the people behind me. It was an awesome experience for me because I had just come back from abroad and the fact that I am a woman and almost getting the ticket. But on that day, while people were waiting to vote for me at the stadium, leaders of the party called me to a meeting with the then governor, Lucky Igbinedion. They told me point blank: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We know you are going WR ZLQ WKLV HOHFWLRQ EXW LW¡V QRW JRLQJ WR KROG EHFDXVH the party has decided that the person who was there before be returned.â&#x20AC;? As a young woman, I GLGQ¡W ZDQW WR PDNH WURXEOH 6R , DFFHSWHG WKH decision of the party. :DV LW D FDVH RI GLVFULPLQDWLRQ DJDLQVW ZRPHQ" I think gender was part of it but I am glad that around that time too, Daisy Danjuma came, stood IRU HOHFWLRQ IURP WKH VDPH (GR 6WDWH DQG JRW LW Dictatorship in party (politics) is another problem. You also have the issue of god-fatherism. But after that time, I had the opportunity to serve as &RPPLVVLRQHU IRU $UWV DQG &XOWXUH LQ (GR 6WDWH even though I could not serve at the national level as I desired. :KHQ DQG KRZ GLG \RX PDNH WKH PRYH WR $& DQG QRZ $3&" ,W¡V EHHQ D ORQJ MRXUQH\ , ZDV LQ WKH 3'3 IRU
almost a decade. After a while, I moved away from politics a bit to watch the scenario. At that time, I kind of liked the developments that were going on in WKH $FWLRQ &RQJUHVV $& LQ (GR 6WDWH DQG , decided that I wanted to be part of that development. 'LG \RX DWWHPSW FRQWHVWLQJ DJDLQ" I did but again, there was somebody that the leaders were sentimental towards because he had EHHQ WKHUH ORQJHU WKDQ PH 6R IRU WKH VHFRQG WLPH I was told to wait; that it was not yet my time. What can I do? I just kept hanging in there until I got DSSRLQWHG DV &RPPLVVLRQHU IRU <RXWKV DQG 6SRUWV :KDW ZHUH WKH WKLQJV \RX GLG DV &RPPLVVLRQHU RI 6SRUWV" I spent about 10 months there and did some turn around with our sports. If you knew Bendel Insurance Football Club, a household name in those days; when I took over as sports commissioner, the club was almost in relegation. They were about second to the last on the proleague table. They were struggling not to go into relegation. When the last season ended (within six months of my being there), they from the danger zone to about 6th or 8th position. Four clubs went into relegation; we probably would have been part of them but we worked hard and saved them. This year, we are supposed to be bringing back the Principals Cup. I hope the ministry handles that. :H¡YH PDGH DOO WKH DUUDQJHPHQW ZLWK FRPSDQLHV WKDW ZLOO Ă&#x20AC;QDQFH RXU WHDP :H KDYH QRW KDG WKH Principals Cup in about 10 years. While I was there, we also ensured that schools
that have not conducted inter-house sports in so PDQ\ \HDUV OLNH 6W 0DULD *RUHWWL *LUOV¡ *UDPPDU 6FKRRO VWDUWHG DJDLQ :KDW DUH \RXU IDYRXULWH VSRUWV" I love badminton and hockey which I played as a young girl. Those were our favourite sports at *RUHWWL *LUOV¡ *UDPPDU 6FKRRO 7KHQ RI FRXUVH there is football which we all love. As commissioner, I encouraged a lot of that and followed my football team for their matches. The female team, the Ine Queens are doing well. They have been invited into the female league. :LWK DOO WKDW KDSSHQHG WR \RX GR \RX WKLQN D ZRPDQ FDQ FRPH RXW IRU WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW WLPH DQG JHW WKH WLFNHW WR FRQWHVW" :H MXVW KDYH WR NHHS SXVKLQJ DQG Ă&#x20AC;JKWLQJ 7KHUH is still a lot of marginalization against women going on. They still feel the men should get before women; sometimes, a woman is even more intelligent than a man. Life in government is challenging and hectic. It keeps you on your toes. The people expect a lot from you because they have put you there to serve. Double Chin BEGONE: Guide to getting rid of that Pesky Double Chin Hello my dear readers, having a double chin can make you look more heavy or fat. A double chin is clearly visible when you bend down or smile. Gaining weight or loose skin elasticity are the main causes behind getting a double chin. Nobody wants a double chin. Â&#x2021; While inhaling, gently lift your head back up until your chin touches the other shoulder. You should be looking to the other side. The Jaw Release: The jaw release exercise tones and stretches the muscles of your face. Perform the jaw release exercise as follows: Â&#x2021; 6it or stand with an erect spine.

Ahead of “the Million Woman March for Endometriosis” billed for International Women’s Day on March 8 in Lagos, the Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria (ESGN), has held a fund raising dinner in support of the cause. The event which took place recently at Radison Blue, Victoria Island, brought together men and women from all walks of life united to fight a common course. The ESGN happens to be the first and only organisation focusing on this condition in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. Since 2005, the support group has been at the forefront of internationally recognised peer review and professional services, programmes and resources, actively lobbying for better outcomes for women affected with endometriosis.
