s the much anticipated Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN ) takes centre stage today at the Expo Hall of Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigerians are in for one the best fashion shows of the year. The show, an R̆VKRRW RI WKH $IULFD )DVKLRQ Week London, will feature mostly young generation designers showcasing African and contemporary designs. Ronke Ademiluyi, organiser of Africa Fashion Week Nigeria, who has successfully hosted the AFWL for four years, shares with us the objectives of AFWN, the brand new Nigeria project, the empowerment programme for young designers as well as a bit of her personal style.
RONKE ADEMILUYI
How would you rate the fashion industry in Nigeria currently? I think Nigerian designers are trend setters. When it comes to African fashion, we set the trend and other countries follow. We showcase a lot of African designers at the Africa Fashion Week London and I can tell you, not because I am a Nigerian, that the best designs have been made by Nigerians and I am not being biased. What is fashion like for you? I am a very simple person. I wear whatever I am comfortable in as long as it suits me. I don’t really follow trend but sometimes, I do, depending on my mood.
How has been the organizer of the Fashion Week LQÀXHQFHG \RXU GUHVV VHQVH" It has made me dress more African. It never used to be OLNH WKDW LW KDV UHDOO\ LQÀXHQFHG WKH ZD\ , GUHVV EHFDXVH , can’t say I am the founder of Africa Fashion Week and be seen in shirt and jean always. I wear what I represent which is African fashion. So what should people expect at the Africa Fashion Week Nigeria? They should expect to see a lot of creativity. Right now, we are working with young people. They are very creative. So, you are going to see mind-blowing designers, something that you have never seen before; an infusion of cultural and contemporary designs. And, we will have our fashion gala night here in Nigeria to close the show. We are going to have veteran designer, Abah Folawiyo, that a lot of people look up to, who has over 40 years experience in the industry, showcase her designs. We are also supporting the Sickle Cell Foundation which is our chosen charity for Africa Fashion Week Nigeria.
Why did you decide to put the show together? We decided to do the African Fashion Week Nigeria because we are very passionate about young people, especially those in the creative industry. We believe that if we empower the younger generation of designers, they will be able to empower the generation after that and then the IXWXUH JHQHUDWLRQ ZLOO EHQHÂżW IURP LW DV ZHOO :H discovered that there are a lot of creative talents in Nigeria so, we came up with an initiative called ‘Brand New Nigeria Designers’. It is a part of the Africa Fashion Week as well but it is called ‘Brand New Nigeria.’ The reason we came up with the theme ‘Brand New Nigeria’ is to nurture the new generation of designers and make them business designers, so that they can actually sustain themselves from their passion. The idea is to ensure they are not designing for the fun of it; but rather turn their passion into business and become global brands. How do you intend to make sure that they succeed? There are lots of challenges designers face; even established designers face them as well. The major challenges are funds and distribution outlets. A lot of them don’t have the funds needed to put a standard fashion business together. A lot of them don’t have where they can stock their products. A few designers have stores but most of them do not have outlets where they stock their brand. So, what we want to do is to focus on those ones. We want to try and empower these designers with start-up funds and create distribution channels where they can market and sell their collections. If we are able to do this for them, they can actually focus on their creativity and their passion and they can become better designers. So what is the selection process for designers that will qualify for the empowerment programme? From the over 100 designers who entered for the fashion week, we have selected 15 designers. Out of that 15, we are going to choose about three who we are going to nurture, empower, mentor and make them international brands. It is going to be like that every year. It is a fashion

- Our vision at africa fashion week nigeria is to make african brands more visible
What exactly are you doing for them? We are creating awareness for them. We will give them a platform during the gala to talk about health conditions. A lot of households in Nigeria have a person with sickle cell or know someone with the condition. It is about creating more awareness. We chose sickle cell because a lot of people who know about sickle cell don’t really understand what it is. I have a few cousins who have sickle cell anaemia.
week but apart from all the glitz and glamour, the whole fashion show, we want to be able to have positive impact in the designers’ lives. If we do three this year and we are able to take them to the next level, when we hold the Africa Fashion Week next year, we will do it with another couple of designers. What does it take to put the African Fashion Week in Nigeria together? It is a lot of hard work: getting a good venue, getting sponsors who actually believe in the vision. The London Fashion Week is a bit more stable because this is our fourth year. We have people who believe in what we are doing; we have corporations who support it. But this is the ¿UVW WLPH ZH DUH GRLQJ LW LQ 1LJHULD VR JHWWLQJ IXQG KDV been a challenge. We have a few sponsors; we also had a few sponsors who pulled out at the last minute as well. But that is not going to stop us from doing what we are doing. We are passionate about what we are doing and we have also noticed that the new generation of designers are educated. We have a lot of doctors, engineers (and) lawyers who have now turned to their creative skills because they can’t get jobs.
What is a typical day like for you? I wake up early in the morning. After praying, I do a bit of exercise if I remember. Then, I get on the computer and VHQG RXW D IHZ HPDLOV RU UHSO\ VRPH 7KHQ , JR WR WKH ṘFH call my team members, do what needs to be done and maybe retire at about 7pm or 8pm. I chill out a bit and then go back to the computer. I get about 200 emails that I have to respond to daily. Where would be your favourite holiday spot? Spain is my favourite holiday spot. I went there last year and it was really nice. I will be going there again this year. I love Paris too but when I go to Paris, I don’t relax; I love shopping. But in Spain, I get to relax a lot more. I just eat, sleep, wake up and read. Your best make-up product? I use Zaron and Melani. What is your vision for Africa fashion week London/Nigeria? Our vision for AFWL and AFWN is to ensure that African fashion is here to stay. It is the new alternative to :HVWHUQ IDVKLRQ DQG LW LQÀXHQFHV D ORW RI IDVKLRQ DURXQG the world. It has been worn by First Ladies like Mrs. Obama who has been seen in British-Nigerian designer, Duro Olowo’s pieces. It has also been worn be celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce etc. Our vision at AFWL and AFWN is to make African brands more visible and more accessible; to have them in a few High Street stores as demand for African brands has now risen and; to have distribution outlets globally.

- Amazing Work Of Grace By Jemi Ekunkunbor
A
lthough he is a Provincial Pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and the MD/CEO of Brunnel Nigeria Limited, if a man’s beginning determined his ending, he would have amounted to nothing. According to his personal testimony, the penury to which his widowed mother was thrown after the demise of his Area customary court judge father, left his future hanging in the balance. But the grace of God was very near and with the help of a hard working mother and a supportive elder brother, his educational career began at the Catholic school three in Warri where he grew up. On completion of his secondary education at the popular, Urhobo College also in Warri, he proceeded to England where he completed his A-Levels and also bagged a degree in Economics from the Greenwich University. He capped his education with an MBA from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Before leaving for the UK, Pastor Brown Oyitso had developed a liking for the good life. He was the quintessential man about town. Until salvation came his way in the late 80s, he was a rallying point for friends who also like the good things of life-booze, night clubs and other trappings of the proverbial biblical prodigal son gone into a ‘far country’. Again he testifies that the grace of God was always near. This lifestyle continued until a dotting wife showed him the way to salvation. The man of God who turned 60 years recently, took time out to share with the Allure team, his life’s story that can only be described as the ‘amazing grace that saved a wretch like him’.
What was life like in Warri where you grew up? Life in Warri was fun. I started work at the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) in Warri. I got into heavy music. In my time, people used to have radiogram but God blessed me with a stereo set because as a staff of NPA, we had access to foreign things. So my friends from rich homes, who had radiogram, found out that listening to music in my one room apartment was different. So my one room became a hot spot. I had all the records, funk, jazz funk, disco and soul music. I went into night clubbing, drinking of alcohol, smoking and of course, the corollary; all the things that young men do. I lived that kind of life until I came to Lagos. It was a really rough life but the grace of God was there. Many of the young boys that I lived this kind of life with either dropped by the way side or died or never amounted to anything. But while this music and night clubbing was going on, my mind was still on going back to school. That was how I left for the UK. I got to the UK and the lifestyle continued. In fact I became a DJ. I was the publicity secretary for the Afro Caribbean society in my university. I was into music and fashion. This was 1975-1981. I came back to Nigeria to do my NYSC, the lifestyle continued. This time, I was hot and fresh from the UK with my afro hair all. I came back with a lot of records. When I got to Port Harcourt I found out that Port Harcourt was called port highlife. So the high life continued. In fact, my home was the XQRIĂ€FLDO QLJKW FOXE 7KHQ DJDLQ WKH JUDFH RI *RG ZDV still there. She said you should be thinking of getting married. So I said what kind of car do married men drive? She said 505! So that was how I took her to the party. But what struck me about her was that she asked very responsible questions. I expected her to tell me we would meet later at one night club or the other. I realised that she was a different kind of person. I treated her differently, with a lot more respect and with a view to having a long term relationship. When you meet somebody ZKR LV RI *RG \RX¡G KDYH SHDFH DERXW LW Was she born again then? She was born Catholic. I was also born Catholic. But I think while she was at the University in Ibadan, she must have had some relationship with the Scripture Union people because, we got married in the Catholic Church to please our parents who were Catholics but

It was my life this pastor preached and as he did, he kept staring at me. In fact, I thought she had gone to narrate my story to the Pastor and it almost caused a quarrel. At the end of the day, I gave my life to Christ. But here was a man who had done 100 metres and all of a sudden I have to stop. The church was too slow for me. So we moved to a church in Surulere. I got there, it was a funky church where the pastor will turn around and say give WKH SHUVRQ E\ \RXU VLGH D KRO\ NLVV¡ $QG P\ ZLIH ZLOO JHW DQJU\ 6KH GLGQ¡W ZDQW WKH FKXUFK DQG , UHDOLVHG LW ZDV not making me better. The pastor was preaching well but there were too many distractions. So we moved to another church. Was that how you came to RCCG? We moved to another church where I grew and was made like an assistant pastor. But then you know how it is with these one-man churches; trouble brewed and somebody now told me about a humble man in Ebute Metta preaches well and lives change. It was this quest to go and know this humble man that took us to RCCG in Ebute Metta in 1989. Then the churches were not many. That also humbled me. Then one day, Pastor Adeboye gathered the workers and told us to scatter. That was excruciating. I was already an altar minister then. in RCCG, we are balanced. We preach prosperity, we preach holiness. We preach about heaven and we preach about hell. This gives me a lot of comfort.
mother was thrown into penury. But here I am today. That experience has also made me sympathetic towards widows.
The rate of divorce is on the rise and the church including pastors have not been spared. What is going on in the church of Jesus Christ? Well it depends on the denomination. In RCCG we have a different opinion. The bible is clear on divorce but I think people just read and interpret things to suit themselves. The bible says in the last days, men shall be truce breakers. So when they break truce, they break covenants. There are all kinds of interferences in marriage today. I hear how some married men bring home pornographic materials and want to practice on their partners. You hear of fathers raping daughters. You read about homosexuality and lesbianism. These are the signs of the end time so when people break the truce, divorce is inevitable. But we preach and believe what the bible says about divorce and that every challenge can be resolved based on the word of God. What has helped me in my own marriage is to always say, what did the word of God say about this particular problem or challenge.
When it comes to fashion, what is your style as a pastor? By the grace of God, I try to dress well because you preach with everything that you have. You cannot present God as a God of prosperity when you are shabby. So I defend the gospel with my externals. I believe pastors should be well dressed in a manner that will earn them respect.
How is life at 60? I approach 60 with a lot of gratitude to God. I thank God for the RCCG where the full gospel is preached. I also thank God for my wife and the children God blessed me with. I thank God for his grace and mercy. I am what I am, I have what I have, and I am going to where I am going by the grace of God irrespective of my shaky beginning. I thank God for the practice of Christianity that has stabilized my life, my home and my children. So I approach 60 with expectation and joy. What has life taught you? Life has taught me to be empathetic and to be welfare oriented and that is why we have the Maranata Foundation in the church. Life has also taught me not to write people off. If you had seen me at about age 9-11, you would have written me off as one who will not amount to anything because when my father died, my

I like the USA especially Atlanta and Dallas but somehow, I feel more at home in London. For me London is very therapeutic and healing. I like the atmosphere there. On hindsight, if you could do things differently, what would it be? The rough life I lived is helping my Christianity today. I lived on the other side and lived it to the fullest. Now that I am a pastor, I have seen the danger and sadness inherent in that sort of life. So, I would love to be saved earlier than I did. What do you look forward to now? What are the challenges that you face as a pastor? The challenges are multiferous. Pastoral work is hard work. Preparing a message that will impact lives sometimes, takes two weeks. I hate seeing people suffer. As a pastor, you see people go through emotions. These are the days you see people without jobs, these DUH WKH GD\V \RX VHH \RXQJ ODGLHV Ă€W IRU PDUULDJH educated, with good jobs, no husband. There is so much going on in the world in terms of fashion, arts, politics and the media. Look at the puritan schools, most Christian schools have dropped their values. You sit down there as a pastor and you ask, is the kingdom of darkness winning this battle? I also have a problem with the type of gospel that is being preached today. When I got born again, we were into KROLQHVV ULJKWHRXVQHVV VDQFWLĂ€FDWLRQ MXVWLĂ€FDWLRQ restitution. All these are no more preached. What happened? We are preaching prosperity, arts, modernity, management and leadership. Pastors are afraid of losing members. So they would not preach holiness. The crowd out there have itching ears. Donating Blood – The Need For This Hello my dear readers, hope you all had a lovely week? Today’s edition got me inspired after discussing with a colleague on donating blood to help save lives and I thought to myself - people need to be made more FRQVFLRXV RI WKLV VHOĂ€HVV DFW A blood donation truly is a “gift of lifeâ€? that a healthy individual can give to others in their community who are sick or injured. In one hour’s time, a person can donate one unit of blood that can be separated into four individual components that could help save multiple lives. For you, it’s just a few moments out of your day but for patients in need, it may save their life From one unit of blood, red blood cells can be extracted for use in trauma or surgical patients. Plasma, the liquid part of blood, is administered to patients with clotting problems. The third component of blood, platelets, clot the blood when cuts or other open wounds occur, and are often used in cancer and transplant patients. Cryoprecipitated anti-hemophilic factor (AHF) is also used for clotting factors. In a recent study supported by the National Blood Foundation, more than 5,000 individuals who were current blood donors at the time or who had given blood in the past were asked why they donate blood. Nearly three-quarters of the respondents said that they give blood to help others. Respondents also said that giving blood makes them feel good about themselves; supports their local communities and hospitals; supports their community culture; and “pays backâ€? society for the times when they or their families have needed blood transfusions in the past.

P.S. -Is there any feedback on the lion that escaped Owerri zoo? Am I the only one that is worried about a wild beast that has been living in Nigeria-from goodness knows what age-is on the prowl and was last seen on the road to Owerri City. Now this is where our wonderful “Naija factorâ€? kicks in. A statement from the Police P.R.O. admits the lion did escape and residents were warned to be careful. That statement was later withdrawn saying it was a false alarm. My question is how does a false DODUP OLNH WKDW JHW VWDUWHG LQ WKH Ă€UVW SODFH" Did the lion go clubbing with friends and its absence caused the panic? Is the lion truly safe and sound in the zoo? TRENDY PIECES AS DIDI SHOWCASES ACCESSORIES COLLECTION By - Yemisi Suleiman Pics - Oscar Ochiogu
UK-based clothes and accessories designer, Tina Ndidi Ugo, creative head of Didi Creations, last Sunday, hosted celebrities and fashion lovers to a private viewing of her latest accessories collection. The event, held at Morning Side Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, featured her exclusive bag collection. From the rock chic, corporate, retro, trendy to beach Chic, there were uniquely created pieces to suit different categories of ladies and their lifestyles. Didi’s glamorous and statement neck pieces, ear rings and bracelets, all created using the finest beads, crystals, gems and stones are a must-have for the daring woman who loves to stand out from the crowd. According to Didi, as she is fondly called, the collection was inspired by “the African woman, especially the Eastern and Southern African woman who delights in adorning statement accessories”. There was also a footwear collection for the stylish and classy man. Guests were treated to a cocktail as they shopped and mingled with friends. Here are some faces at the event.
