It’s already the third month! By the end of this month, the first quarter of 2013 would have come and gone. Like a flash in a pan. How quickly time flies! Have you achieved a quarter of your wish list this year? If so hurray! But, if you are like many of us whose time suddenly is not enough to get all in a day, it’s time to delegate a few things so, one can concentrate on more important issues. It’s the women’s month. March 8 is the day set aside by the United Nations to recognize and focus on issues relating to women. As a magazine, whose primary focus is women, we have decided to focus on women achievers this month; our way of celebrating their milestones in a society that is so unfairly skewed towards men. And so today, we begin with this duo of an actress and a producer. Have you seen ‘The Flower Girl’? It’s a romantic flick produced by Michelle Bello with Damilola Adegbite as lead character. Both are young women, another testament that when women are in charge, the result cannot be anything but excellent. Go see. Time is ripe! Men are too easily and too quickly compromised. But not us; we have innate capability to compartmentalize, a trait not found in men folk. This is why more women should be in charge. Welcome to our month. Have a great week!

uliet Esiri, CEO of Okin Arewa Beauty Centre, exemplifies the true meaning of a consummate beauty expert. Not only is she a seasoned professional make-up artist, she is also an extraordinary gele stylist and teeth whitening technician. These three abilities give Juliet a unique edge in the fashion industry, as she is often hired for make-up and gele tying assignments for weddings and other ceremonies. Juliet, a Nigerian by birth, was actually educated in make-up artistry and gele styling in London, England seven years ago, where she also lived and worked professionally. She recently moved to Nigeria to set up her beauty store, Okin Arewa, located on Adeniran Ogunsanya in the heart of Surulere, Lagos. A one-stop beauty centre that offers make-up services, manicure and pedicure, and teeth whitening, Okin Arewa boasts an array of beauty products. Her clients span from the pretty girl next door to the famous Monalisa Chinda and other Nollywood hotties.

Your shop seems to have something for everyone. The reason why we offer everything is basically because of brides. We have a bridal package which has all the things a bride will require; things for make-up, body massage and face brightening during that special occasion. Looking at beauty centres in Nigeria, who is your target apart from brides? The target, right now, is not woman alone. It’s for everybody; guys can come in to have their teeth whitened, guys can come in to cut their hair, guys can come in to for pedicure and manicure. And, our prices are very affordable.

The other time you talked about your training. Where and when did you train? I trained 7 years ago. I started as a make-up artist. I trained in the U.K. where I lived. The first make-up school I attended was Chaoten Therapy Beauty Make-up School in London, where I had foundational training in make-up. After that, I travelled to the United States and did some courses. I worked in the U.K. for a while, came back to Nigeria did a one week research course with Banke. I try to update myself in the industry.

When did you start your business? I started in 2007. I started with make-up officially because I have always known how to tie gele.

How did you learn to tie gele? I have always had flare for gele even before I left for the U.K. I always helped my friends to tie their gele. I have always had passion (for it). I actually took gele tying to the U.K. Gele tying is an art itself (requiring ability) to create different styles. I can sit down to imagine different styles. Gele tying is actually a form of art. It’s not everyone that can do it. I look at gele in Nigeria and I just shake my head. Why? Because it’s boring; its just one style. I miss the U.K. for that because the ladies in the U.K. want different styles (for different occasions) I tie gele from Thursday to Sunday. I package it for people and they just pick it to whenever they need it. Gele itself is an industry because it’s a form of art. How many gele do you tie between Thursday and Sunday in the U.K.? I cannot say. I have tied up to 100 gele in a day. At times, at a party, I get to tie gele in the toilet and changing room. There was this day I attended two clubs’ anniversaries; each member had two fabric of gele and each club had 48 members. I gave the two clubs different styles. I try to ensure that I do not do the same style as the last.

How do you get inspiration for styles? I just look at my client’s face. I use pins to hold them down but when I look at gele tying in Nigeria, I am not really happy. We just have the same style, the back-front style.

At what point did teeth whitening come in? Most times, when I want to do trials for my brides and we fix appointments, they end up telling me they can’t make it because they have to go for teeth whitening at some hospital. That was where I got the idea from; I want my brides to be able to come into my shop to do everything at once. Although it’s still new, people have been coming to make enquiry about the service.

What is the trend when it comes to bridal make-up? I don’t think there is any trend when it comes to white weddings. You don’t want the bride’s face to look scary. But when it comes to the traditional wedding, you can decide to play with colours.

What keeps you going? I like the fact that I make people happy. I make them smile. So many clients have called me back from the U.K. to say ‘thank you’ and this makes me happy. What makes your services stand out? I believe in quality; whatever I am doing, I believe I should produce good quality – even if the money is small. This makes Okin Arewa stand out.

What has life taught you? Life has taught me to work hard and not to depend on people.

How would you describe your style? I am very simple when it comes to fashion. I love wrist watches. I can wear simple slippers with my Rolex or Cattier.

If you are to take some time out, where will you go? I will like to go to the Caribbean or Paris.

How did your career begin in the world of beauty? ​My career began as a passion actually. From helping friends and family.

Talking about the Nigerian market, how many clients do you have? How many people have you tied gele for? Do you train? I have a lot of clients now and I am still getting more recommendations. I train. I have some students that I teach make-up and gele tying.

Do you see yourself someday creating your own line of makeup? Yes. I see myself having my own brand of makeup and skin care products. Already, I am into skin care products that are my brand! My hot sugar body polish scrub is a most try for every lady out there.

How many students do you have in the U.K? I can’t say now... I have several in the U.K. that I have trained; some of them are teachers today. I

Your advice for young girls out there. They should be hard working. Success is a gradual process. They should not look down on themselves. They should be focused.

Did you Best and Worst Pre -Morning Run Foods

Hello my dear readers, Morning runs present a challenge for your eating and fueling habits. Running on an empty stomach may leave you without the energy you need to perform well. Choosing the wrong foods, eating too much or too little, or eating at the wrong time can affect your performance and possibly ruin your race, or at least make your performance less than optimal. Eating the right pre-run meal at the right time ensures that all your hard training doesn’t go to waste. The main purpose of the pre-run meal is to fill your liver with glycogen, especially if it precedes a morning run. Liver glycogen fuels your nervous system while you sleep, and as a result, your liver is roughly 50 percent glycogendepleted when you wake up in the morning. The latest time to eat before your run is 1 hour. Experiment with the timing, types of food and serving sizes to find the best pre-run breakfast for you. Today I have put together best and worst foods before a morning run to help you kick start your exercise. Here’s a guide to what you should and shouldn’t eat before your runs.

oatmeal Oatmeal is a healthy breakfast food to fuel your morning run, providing carbohydrates and protein. Sweeten the oatmeal lightly to keep it healthy. Adding fruit such as berries or bananas adds sweetness and additional flavor. To save time, cook a large batch of oatmeal ahead of time. A quick reheat in the microwave allows you to eat your pre-run meal so you can get out the door faster.

SAFE FOODS:

These are the best types of pre-run foods to help avoid gastrointestinal distress during or after your morning run:

Refined Carbohydrates Processed white foods, like regular pasta, white rice, and plain bagels are good choices. Although they’re not as nutritious as whole grain and unprocessed foods, they’re easier on your stomach because the whole grain is already broken down. Bagel and Peanut Butter A bagel is a source of carbohydrates that works well as a pre-run food. A thin layer of peanut butter on top gives you some protein to help you feel full. Go easy on the butter; too much fat can cause digestive problems. Try jelly if you have a difficult time digesting the peanut butter. You can also try an English muffin for variety. banana A banana offers a quick food option that is easy to digest before a morning run. Bananas supply carbohydrates, magnesium and potassium that are beneficial to runners; the carbs supply energy, while the potassium and magnesium work against cramping and replace what is lost through sweat. The high water content of fruit also helps with hydration. So in my opinion a banana is the way to go! Additionally, If you really want to eat fruits or vegetables before runs, zucchini, tomatoes, olives, grapes, and grapefruit are all low in fiber.

YOGHURT All yogurt contains protein, but Greek yogurt contains more than regular. This prerun snack option also supplies the body with carbohydrates. Mix plain yogurt with fresh fruit for a healthy option. You can also blend the yogurt with frozen fruit and a small amount of fruit juice to make yourself a breakfast smoothie. Safe Dairy Some people have issues when they consume dairy products before runs. Soy, rice, and almond milks generally don’t contain the sugar lactose, which can be tough to digest. You can also try acidophilus milk and yogurts with live cultures, which contain bacteria that help with digestion. Fluids Hydration is an essential component to preparing for any run. Drink plenty of water the day before your morning run to hydrate the body. Continue drinking water until your run and during it to keep your hydration levels up. Fruit juice mixed with water or a sports drink is another fluid option. Consider the length of your run to make sure you don’t drink an excess of calories you won’t need. I believe that 21-year old guy has some work to do in your life and my advice is you let him be. See the guy, not his age. There is a part of your life that has died which his youthful exuberance will polish back to life. Somehow, out of the blues he sees something about you that no one else has seen for a long time. He is excited and wants to explore the beauty he beholds and revel in the crush he has on you. He will probably make you go back to becoming 18 years younger yourself; see the world from the possibility angle that youths see the world from; and, make you become excited about life all over again. You will find out that you have begun to change your looks and the way you relate to other people; you will begin to want to discover things around you like never before. You will realise that life is good after all. If he wakes up years later and says that you are too old for him, there is a probability that you would have become livelier and ready for more risks.
