relu Olabisi Fayemi is much more than just a first lady. The beautiful wife of the Governor of Ekiti State balances a modern outlook with deep concern for her people. Before she entered the spotlight as first lady of Ekiti State, she was known for her philanthropic work with the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), the first Africa-wide grantmaking fund which supports the work of organisations promoting women’s rights in Africa. Born in Liverpool, England in the ‘60s, she attended Grace Children’s School, Lagos and Abeokuta Girls Grammar School. She went to Methodist Girls High School, Lagos for A’Levels. She has a BA and MA in History from the University of Ife, Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University). She also received an MA in Gender and Society from Middlesex University, UK with academic background in History, Cultural Anthropology and Gender Studies. Since her husband, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, became Governor of Ekiti State in 2011, Bisi has been actively involved in a range of policy advocacy and social inclusion programmes to support his administration. She is the Founder of Ekiti Development Foundation (EDF), a non-governmental organization that focuses on women and youth development, which was launched in June 2011. Since its establishment, EDF has supported hundreds of women’s groups and civil society organisations across Ekiti State with economic empowerment, health and political participation projects. A tireless advocate for the rights of women, she has received a number of humanitarian awards and has served on boards of several international organizations. She received the David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award in 2011, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of philanthropy, given by the Synergos Institute, New York, United States of America. Ushered into the tastefully furnished waiting room of Government House, Ado Ekiti, by the Special Assistant – Media to the First Lady, Akin Oyedele, it was a warm and delightful Bisi who welcomed us as she settled down for an intriguing interview. The amiable first lady who turned fifty last June, talks about her recently published autobiography titled “Speaking Above a Whisperâ€? and her other book titled “Speaking for Myselfâ€?, life as first lady and more‌

BISI FAYEMI First of all, we want to congratulate you on your 50th birthday celebrations Thank you. How does it feel to be 50? It feels great. I turned 50 on the 11th of June, but the celebrations were deferred to this month because my very dear sister and friend, the deputy governor of our state, passed away. It feels good to be 50. I give thanks to God for preserving me. And, I just pray that I have many more years in good health. +RZ KDV LW EHHQ VLQFH \RX DVVXPHG RIĂ€FH DV First Lady of Ekiti State? What does it entail? What are the high points and challenges? Well, life as the wife of a governor is very interesting. The high points for me include being able to serve the people of the state because that is the leadership philosophy of my husband and I share that philosophy; that leadership is about service. You are expected to serve people. If you are in a position of authority, people are not supposed to serve you. So, I like the fact that I have the opportunity to serve people in the state, especially women, because my life long passion has been promoting the rights of women and children. There are challenges too but the key one is trying to be everything to all people; the fact that people expect that you can work miracles because you happen to be the wife of a governor. In as much as I would love to help as many people as I can, it is H[WUHPHO\ GLIĂ€FXOW WR UHVSRQG WR HYHU\RQH¡V UHTXHVW ZKHWKHU LW LV IRU HPSOR\PHQW RU IRU Ă€QDQFLDO VXSSRUW and so many other things. But I give God the glory; WKLQJV KDYH EHHQ YHU\ JRRG VR IDU DQG P\ KXVEDQG¡V administration has been tremendously successful. You recently gave cash grants to market women in the state? What does it mean to the average market woman? I have just completed a market outreach tour of all the sixteen local government areas in Ekiti State. It is something that I have thought of and planned for a while. Everywhere you go, market women are key to the informal economy so, if you are designing programmes to empower women, you have to take into consideration the role that market women play DQG WKH VSHFLĂ€F QHHGV WKDW WKH\ KDYH , KDYH KDG opportunity to work with groups of market women in different parts of Africa. When Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became president, she asked those of us who were supporting her to try and invest in market women in Liberia because they were key to her success when she was running for the presidency and that is how WKH -RKQVRQ 6LUOHDI 0DUNHW :RPHQ¡V )XQG ZDV established. Cape Wine Land Tour:
The Segway experience by - Jemi Ekunkunbor who was in Cape Town

RIDE ON THE SEGWAY WITH OUR INSTRUCTOR
T
he last day of our tour came suddenly too quickly. It is amazing how four eventful days have rolled by. Tomorrow, Friday, we shall be heading back to Nigeria but for today, we have three more places to visit. The night before, our tour guide, Alicia, had sent a message for every member of the team to ZHDU Ă DW VKRHV :RUG KDG JRQH URXQG ZH ZHUH going to ride the Segway PT (Personal Transport). :KDWHYHU WKDW ZDV QRQH RI XV NQHZ LW :H ZHUH left to imagine it. This message had created anxiety and little bit of excitement for the unknown. And this experience we were to have at the Spier :LQHU\ 'RQH ZLWK EUHDNIDVW ZH RQFH DJDLQ ORDGHG ourselves into the tour van as we began our journey to Spier and to an experience we would talk about for a long time to come. Like many of the wine properties, we all fell in love with the environment and no sooner than we DUULYHG (PHND ZKR VHHPHG WR KDYH DQ DIĂ€QLW\ ZLWK photography, he had started modelling for Oscar. It was a beautiful place which he wanted to capture by all means. Just behind the reception room ran a beautiful stream. Spier combines farming with lifestyle and known for being the most historical gabled farm in Cape Land. Our guide at Spier was a friendly young man who led us through the grounds, quite some distance to where the Segways were packed. As it turned out, the Segway is a two-wheeled, self balancing electric vehicle. Segways are the means of transportation through the more than 1,000 hectres of farmland. Each Segway we were told, costs about $10,000 and a fall from this wonder machine could be fatal. Although we were all anxious to go on it, we were told that we had to take a driving class which we did for about 30 minutes to perfect how to manoeuvre it. Not even those

who have been driving for years could pull this trick easily but once perfected, it was hard to get us off the Segways. Perhaps the one person who had it tough sailing through was our beautiful Konye who could not hide her phobia for driving. And so our journey to the farmlands began, the ride was simply exhilarating as we glided up and down the uneven road, snaking the path between the rows of well-cultivated grape vines. On our return trip, we made a stop at the Protea Garden. some English with her French. I had a session with the one who spoke just French and so took the other to mingle with those at the party since she could communicate to an extent in English. Suddenly, one of the guys at the party just got all over her, talking and smiling and holding; then he started to fondle her and later took her to the terrace where he was attempting to have sex with her right there in the dark. The other lady who was in session with me and LV DFWXDOO\ WKH RWKHU¡V FRXVLQ IHOW VRPH VRUW RI commiseration for the guy and her cousin. She told me how her cousin had always had that problem with guys who come around her wanting NOTHING ELSE BUT SEX. The all-French speaking one told me that it got so bad that her cousin had to start going around with condoms in her bag. Apparently, she had been sexually abused as a child and the abuse, which was never addressed, had continued into adulthood. Now the question is: who exactly is the victor and who is the vanquished? For this lady who knows that guys see her as a pleasure unit and a sex object, she had her wildest guess come true from the moment the guy approached her because, she already knew in her mind that he was not going to be different; and that this is another weak guy who cannot discern and feel the diabolical aura that surrounds her and which she is yet to be delivered from. THE NUANCE OF A LADY: HER EDGE FOR SUCCESS Looking at the perspective brought forth last week on those virtues that distinguishes a lady, it would be in place to further point out that embedded within that nature is the ability to see opportunity in everything, therefore projecting her as strategic, focused and a “goal-getterâ€?. She is not easily distracted and would wisely deal with any hindrances
in her way. And beyond seeing this opportunity, she seizes it as well. It is right to say then, that a young lady who is determined to get to the top would normally acquire skills that would stand her out from the multitude, therefore knowing her purpose in life is very crucial and seriously a function of self discovery.
