...As the date for the much publicized, Native and Vogue Port Harcourt International Fashion Week draws near, organizers last week in Port-Harcourt, crowned Uche Doris Adaugo and Ekpata Gedoni its face. Today, Allure unveils both models as they share their excitement and their thoughts for the forth coming event.
They will never be the same again. Their sun rose when the two hitherto unknown became the Face of Native & Vogue International Fashion Week. Today, Uche Doris Adaugo and Ekpata Gedoni grace our cover – part of their reward for emerging winners. From thousands of entries, these two passed through all the stages to become pioneers. Like a dream come through, life has WXUQHG DURXQG IRU JRRG 7KH XQYHLOLQJ IRU WKH ¶)DFH· WRRN SODFH ODVW week at the Southern Star Hotel, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. You could cut through the tension as time came for the winners to be unveiled. No doubt, Adaugo and --Gideon were favourites, judging by the hoopla of joy from the audience. And so, the aim of changing lives with the Fashion Week is gradually unfolding. Apart from these two, ten young up-and-coming designers will have the spotlight shining on them when they showcase their collections at the N&V Young Talents Competition which will kick off the in the week beginning September 22, 2013. Rivers State is certainly charting a new course with this. The potentials for this to be an alternative to oil will be realised in Port Harcourt. In the not-too-distant future, Port Harcourt will not only be the Garden City, it will also be a fashion destination. Who would have thought that Port Harcourt will be brimming with such design talents as seen in the collections worn by the Native & Vogue winners? There is plenty of life outside Lagos! I am truly loving every second of this. Do join us. Have a great week!

As a fashion accessory, shoes will continue to play an important role as far as dressing up is concerned. One foot wear that is hard to ignore is the wedge. Not only do they add height, they are easy to walk in as they have good balance. A pair of wedge is eye catching with very urbane look and you can wear it with almost any length of dress or skirt.

eter Iriah is the Chairman/CEO of GQAcoustics a sound production company based in Lagos. We are involved in music production, not Must sound ĕects but also light production and all technical aspect of music production. Over his long years working in the sound production industry, he has accumulated vast insight and knowledge into all aspects of sound recording, sound design, and production, light production and all technical aspect of music production. With his commitment to quality audio design which pushes the boundaries of sound, Mr. Iriah gives us an in-depth look at the world of sound production.
When did you actually get started in sound production? I have been doing this since when I was in school. In those days, in campus, I was a DJ and anyone having a party would employ my services. Evening outside the campus people having events would call each time they need our services. When I left school, it was like re-discovery a life ambition of what I love to do in sound production. How has it been over the years? Over the years as the sound industry continues to develop into a large scale format production so has the sound production evolve technological techniques. So a lot of services are incorporated in that sector. Because everybody is titling towards Alaba international, where traders that import these sound equipment are, unfortunately the traders are not trained in audio sound production, all they do is buy and sell from countries like china, South Korea. They import all sorts of equipment and ¿ll the industry with all kinds of substandard sound equipments. These traders are everywhere because in the industry, they are the ones that more or less bring these products into the countries. But as we begin to have the professionals who are very few in the country dictate the pace in the industry things would gradually change. What is your clientele base like? Our clients cut across private and public sectors; in the private sector we have GSM companies, oil companies and churches. Churches do a lot of events especially during crusades and retreats. We
PETER IRIAH
are into dĭerent types of sound services, sound proof productions services and engineering services; we also have the consultancy services, the acoustics services.
What are the challenges in the sound production industry? As I speak, the maMor problem is ¿nance, to bring in these original equipments because the client that is buying doesn¶t known the dĭerence, so whatever they see in the market is what they buy. We have some sound equipment with certain key features, some with longer duration or life span but we have the ones that have very limited span. This is because you cannot approach sound without applying the principles, because there are laws governing sound production and except you work with those laws in sound production you can’t achieve desired result for perfect sound production We have a lot of challenges in these areas because the client does not know any better; which is why when they have an event they contract everything to an event company who in turn gets vendors for dĭerent services including those in charge of lightening, audio and sound production. And most times the vendors attached to these management companies are not trained in the art of sound production. It is di̇cult to ¿nd an event management company that can make informed decisions regarding sounds. In other words, the client is dependent on the event company to provide quality sound and the event company doesn’t even know what quality sound is.
How do we recognize quality sound? Good sound production is relative, and you agree with me, that what sounds good to me might not sound good to you. So therefore the ear is not a standard measurement of quality sound. In the industry there is a standard measurement to analyze sound production so that when you listen to a sound you will be able to determine its quality. In sound production an analyzer is the number one basic thing. And unfortunately non of these event companies have an idea of what is called sound analyzers or have one, except the ones that we have here. Each of these sound analyzer cost about 2000 dollars and no event company would go through that pain to purchase them, because they are busy doing trial and error. +owever when ever we do any event the dĭerent is always clear, we know because each time we do events people keep commending the quality of our sound production. Eventually our event becomes a marketing tool for us because of our quality sound production; as quality speaks for itself. Lack of quality sound production is a major problem in our environment and this is why the industry is so under developed, with all sorts of pretenders in the industry. Most people come into the sector as a business not as a profession. And except you see it as a profession whatever you do
will always be based on trial and error. And of course it will not be good enough. Tell us a bit about your educational background? I attended university of Sokoto, and then my father was a civil servant and was transferred from place to place. We were based in Lagos, so after school, during the holidays we would go to Sokoto. So after my O’levels I went back to the university of Sokoto, after my youth service in Lagos, I worked with 1EPA now P+C1 at the island ȯce because my father wanted me there.. And then I thought to myself, that this is not what I wanted to do, so I resigned. How long did you work with NEPA? I worked for about two years before I resigned and then I traveled to the 8S, because I wasn’t ful¿lled doing what I was doing then. It was during my stay then that I ran into a sound production company and that was how the inspiration came, and I did a lot of things with them, I began to work with them, did several projects with them for about 12 years before I came back to set up . How do you relax? When I want to relax I dance, at my age I still go clubbing. I am also a sports person, even though I don’t do that much anymore, I do a lot of relaxing at home watching movies. What has life taught you? Life has taught me a lot of lessons, I have learnt in life that there are no short cuts, life is a process and every step counts.

Ways to Eat Clean!!! Hello my dear readers today we shall be pausing on the food trends and assessing methods of eating healthy and maintaining a clean system. As September brings about the beginning of another school year for the kids so should we as adults restart our calendar year with healthier diets to make our bodies feel best and energized for the start of the new school year. 7RGD\ , KDYH LGHQWL¿HG HDV\ ZD\V to eat, breathe and maintain a cleaner system, as the old adage goes - health is wealth!
1. CUT DOWN ON ALCOHOL Although several studies have shown that moderate amounts of alcohol (1 drink per day for women, 2 for men can have some health Eene¿ts²raising ³good´ +'/ cholesterol, ³thinning the Elood´ (preventing clots that can cause heart attack and stroke) and possiEly warding ŏ dementia and Al]heimer¶s disease, there are some good reasons to make sure that your alcohol consumption stays moderate. Alcohol takes a toll on your liver - the major organ of your Eody devoted to ³deto[ing´ your system. ,t also acts as a diuretic, making it harder to stay hydrated. One idea to cut back: Try sticking to the suggested limit of one drink a day for women, two for men. (Think of the calories and money you¶ll save ) /ooking for an alcohol-free drink at cocktail hour? Try soda water with a splash of juice. 2. CUT DOWN ON SUGAR Alot of us eat too much sugar. Scientists recommend 6 teaspoons per day for women, 9 for men. High intake of added sugar is linked with risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high triglyceride levels. One idea to cut back: Skip
processed foods, which can be loaded with hidden added sugars, and when you want a sweet treat, reach for fruit for a natural sugar ¿[. ,n my households we do not have packed juices just freshly sTuee]ed juices. 0y favorite is Orange as it tastes so sweet and is packed with vitamin C.
3. CUT DOWN ON SALT By reducing our sodium intake, you B would be lowering your risk of heart w disease by up to 9 percent, according di to a study in the New England Journal of 0edicine. 5estaurant foods and processed foods both tend to be very pr high hi in sodium, so a key step in lowering your sodium intake is to eat lo out less and cook at home more using o fresh ingredients instead but most fr importantly, try boosting Àavor with im herbs and spices rather than salt. For he instance , grill all my meats especially instanc chicken with mostly herbs and very little salt and no seasoning. The herbs such as thyme, coriander, garlic and rosemary are more than enough to give it enough Àavour, allowing you use just a pinch of salt for balance.
Did you
KNOW? Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds. Dogs only have about 10?
idea to get more: :hen ¿guring out what to make for dinner make vegetables the main event²start with the vegetables you have on hand or what looks good to you at the market. From there, ¿gure out what else (protein, starch) would go well with it. For instance efo riro and boiled plantains is one option. But remember to go easy on the oil
6. HAVE MORE WATER ,t¶s tempting to choose other beverages, but water really is the best thing to drink. Our bodies are 60 percent water and it¶s vital for the function of every organ system, helping to circulate o[ygen and whisk away to[ins. One idea to get more: Choose it for your main beverage at and between meals that way by the time you have a beverage you would be so full from the water you¶ll end up not drinking much if at all any. ,f you¶re not a fan of plain water, try a sprit] of lemon or lime to ja]] it up. Another thing , do is measure how much water , drink by tall glasses. Technically we should drink 8 tall glasses of water every day, to be able to get the nice skin we all want, and enable our body digest the food properly and also allow each organ function at optimum level.
4. CUT DOWN ON REFINED GRAINS 5e¿ned grains²white Àour, white rice²are stripped of bene¿cial ¿ber, vitamins and minerals. So while they add calories, they¶re not really providing much in the way of nutrients. And since they¶re low in ¿ber, they¶re less satisfying than whole grains. One idea to cut back: Check the ingredient list and make sure the word ³whole´ describes the grains in the product²if it just says ³wheat Àour,´ for e[ample, that¶s not wholewheat, so make another choice. 5. HAVE MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Year-round, , eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Not only do they add a lot of Àavor and color to meals, they¶re nutrient- and antio[idant-rich, low in calories and can help lower your risk of heart disease. One
7. HAVE MORE GREEN TEA Even though , know green tea has a bevy of health bene¿ts² from boosting immunity to ¿ghting cavities², don¶t drink it very often. One idea to get more: Try swapping one of your daily cups of cŏee for a cup of green tea instead. That’s it for today my readers! Hope you enjoyed WKLV SLHFH 5HPHPEHU \RX UHDG LW KHUH ¿UVW For comments and questions please email terimendes@gmail. com, @terimendes. I would love to hear from you, till next week. - it’s ta ta for now! XOXO

THREE WAYS TO FEEL AND LOOK BETTER INSTANTLY
2. CUT CHEMICAL ADDITIVES
Good Health is not valued until sickness comes knocking!
1. BANISH BAD FATS What: Trans-fats. These are formed when vegetable oils are made into solid form through a chemical process called hydrogenization. They are by far one of the most seriously damaging part of our diet! Where: Used for many processed foods especially snacks, candy bars, and fast foods industry. Also found in margarine and buttery spreads. Trans-fats are cheap; they lengthen the shelf life of foods and they keep Àavours stable ¹ but at the price of your health. Why: Natural vegetable oils have gone through a harsh chemical process in order to be transformed into trans-fatty acids. These acids not only block us from absorbing and using essential fatty acids that we do need, they also disturb the make up of our cells and are linked to a host of serious diseases, including cancer and diabetes. BAN IT FROM YOUR FOOD! Avoid: Nutritional labels are required to include trans-fats. Start checking the ingredients for the word hydrogenated, look at the caloric breakdown and see how many everyday items are full of them. Restaurants, including fast-food joints, are harder to police. Instead: Use real butter, not margarine, at home;
disrupt your cellular function. One great change you can make in your diet is to switch your fats. Stick with good quality olive oil (Extra Virgin is best because it is processed in a gentler way). Buy only Âłexpeller-pressed´ or ÂłunreÂżned´ vegetable oils and good quality butter (organic or, better yet, raw organic if you can Âżnd it, full of essential, fat-soluble vitamins and delicious taste). Try a new contender in the health Âżeld coconut oil, which is a healthy saturated fat that is great for high-heat cooking. Also try walnut oil and almond oil for dressings and baking. Always store all cooking oils in dark containers so they don’t go rancid.
avoid commercially produced snacks, baked goods, and fast food. It’s not just solid trans-fats you have to be wary of. The poly-unsaturated vegetable oils that are touted to be super healthy, such as saĚˆower, sunĂ€ower, canola, and so on, have a downside; they can easily go rancid, which creates damaging free radicals that can harm your cells. They get damaged by high-heat cooking and further

What: Synthetic colours, Àavours, and preservatives added to processed food to make them more appetizing or more Àavourful or to last longer than nature would allow. Where: In many processed foods, from cereal to condiments, to ice cream. Why: Can build up in your intestines and cross through into your blood stream, taxing the liver, which must detoxify them. If the liver gets over-loaded with toxins from prolonged consumption of these foods, the additives start to circulate in the blood stream and can lead to problems like skin disorders, weight gain, and possibly auto-immune disorders. In some cases, if you eat a lot of highly re¿ned foods and stimulants, your body starts depleting its own mineral supply. Also factor in the trash and waste that you are adding to land¿lls from packaged, processed foods. Consuming lots of prepackaged food is not good either for your body or for the environment. Avoid: Eat meals of whole foods closest to their original state whenever possible (like a home-roasted chicken, not boxed chicken stir-fry). Veto foods that look like nature wouldn’t have made them that way, and check the ingredients list for suspicious activity. Harmful nitrates, for example, are added to many lunch meats to make them look pink. Nix those brands. TO BE CONTINUED...
