From the editor...
I was one of those who rooted for Evel. The 24-year old crooner became the fourth winner of Nigerian Idol which wrapped up last week. As in other reality shows, contestants come in rough and shabby; but like diamonds in a crust, they became polished and truly shone forth like the stars they became. Musical reality shows have become a platform for launching hungry talents; a platform many are grateful for as it does help to keep us all off the streets. The lives that have been transformed and the teeming viewership glued to television, week in week out, to watch who is leaving and who is struggling for dear life makes this even more exciting. As one show does its encore, another opens its curtains. 071¡V 3URMHFW )DPH UHFHQWO\ VHQW LWV WUDLQ IRUWK WR SLFN XS roughshod from all over the country; that would make the trip for opening day. $V ZH DGMXVW RXU VHDWV IRU PRUH HQWHUWDLQPHQW -RNH 6LOYD ZKR KHDGV WKH 3URMHFW )DPH $FDGHP\ VSRNH ZLWK $OOXUH¡V <HPLVL 6XOHLPDQ RQ WKH ÂśHPRWLRQDOLW\¡ RI ZDWFKLQJ FUXVWV IDOO RII DQG SROLVKHG GLDPRQGV UROO RII WKH OLQH EHIRUH WKH Ă€QDO Ă XII 7UXO\

JOKE SILVA - On The Emotionality Of Reality Shows
V
By Yemisi Suleiman
eteran actress, Joke Silva, carved out a nice career for herself in epic stage plays, feature films and television sitcoms in the ‘80s and her career shows no signs of slowing down! With over 100 movie and television credits to her name, Joke Silva continues her active career, currently imparting knowledge to the younger generation as head of MTN Project Fame West Africa Academy (PFWA). In this interview, the screen queen opens up on happenings in the MTN Project Fame West Africa Academy (PFWA), the art of stage craft and more. When you say something is an academy, it pre-supposes that it is an institution where you teach industry, thoroughness, discipline and help people transform to be what they desire to be. How easy has it been running Project Fame Academy? One has learnt over the years that as we are imparting knowledge LQWR WKH FRQWHVWDQWV ZH¡UH DOVR OHDUQLQJ KRZ WR GHDO ZLWK WKH HPRWLRQDOLW\ of the entire process. You start out with so many people; so many of them looking very hopeful, so many of them wanting to do well, but because it LV D FRPSHWLWLRQ QRW HYHU\ERG\ JHWV WR WKH Ă€QLVK OLQH Therefore, one has learnt to try as much as possible to get the very VDOLHQW SRLQWV DFURVV WR WKHP LQ WKH Ă€UVW FRXSOH RI ZHHNV <RX NQRZ WKDW LV when you have all the contestants together. You then start breaking things down even further as you go along. When you get to the last seven, it becomes really heart wrenching because by then you see some rough diamonds that have become very polished having to go home. Talking about emotionality now, do you feel pain when you see anyone of them having to go home? Yes, I do; but I am beginning to get accustomed to the fact that it must happen. One of the things I have decided to guard against is being cynical about it because I have found out that it is important to connect with their ambition; to help realize that ambition and if you are being F\QLFDO \RX ORVH WKDW FRQQHFWLYLW\ ,W¡V MXVW OLNH EHLQJ D GRFWRU \RX ZLOO GR \RXU EHVW WR PDNH \RXU SDWLHQW VXUYLYH EXW LQ GRLQJ \RXU EHVW \RX FDQ¡W afford to be too emotional, even though you must still be connected. Relative to your generation, in terms of talent, how would you rate the quality of the talent we have today? I read something recently and I thought it was so apt. If you look back at the times when our industry started budding, in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and compare with what the industry has become today, you will discover that it has had its ups and downs. We once showcased that incredible cultural explosion and energy; when you had all the writers like Wole Soyinka, J. P. Clark, and the likes. And then in music, we had Fela.

R EPORT AGE Between that time when you had the Hubert Ogundes, the Eddy Ugbomas, and Umar in the north, there was so much energy and then, the lull came. The lull almost made it look like nothing had happened before. Our cultural menu became shallow. :H UHDOO\ GRQ¡W KDYH D FXOWXUDO PHQX DQG LW¡V YHU\ important that we develop that; otherwise, we will keep UH LQYHQWLQJ WKH ZKHHO 7KHUH¡V D VD\LQJ WKDW ´LI \RX DUH OHDGLQJ DQG QR RQH LV IROORZLQJ WKHQ \RX DUH MXVW WDNLQJ a walk.â€? We have come to the point where we need to do more. We have done a lot of entertainment but all the artistic expressions now need to be part of nation-building; of citizenship role. Are those some of the things you try to impart on the young people, beyond making them well rounded? Yes. That has always been very important for me. We even took a step further in the last season; I asked them what kind of song they would like to sing to inspire people, to give people a deep sense of belonging. We also took classes on being responsible people with their creativity. From a younger artiste to an older colleague, what are the things that make a good artiste? 'LVFLSOLQH LV YHU\ LPSRUWDQW 7KDW¡V RQH RI WKH WKLQJV ZH DUH YHU\ FRQFHUQHG DERXW DW 3URMHFW )DPH $FDGHP\ All members of the faculty are disciplined and we try to show that without discipline, you cannot succeed. We have been so rife in all our success stories, stating how the disciplined and the undisciplined ones end up. When you think that you are talented and you give \RXU WDOHQW IUHH UHLQ WKDW¡V YHU\ GHVWUXFWLYH :H WHDFK that here and we have been proven right in that respect. Discipline and hard work! Hard work gets you there. When we talk about discipline, if you have been contracted to do something, keep to your contract. When you are supposed to arrive somewhere at a particular time, be there on time. Time is key! We seem QRW WR EH YHU\ WLPH FRQVFLRXV LQ 1LJHULD EXW UHDOO\ LI \RX must succeed, then you have to be. Secondly, as a musician, you have to keep SUDFWLVLQJ <RX GRQ¡W MXVW ZDNH XS DQG ZDQW WR SHUIRUP The sound that comes from a musician comes because you have been practising and pushing the barriers over time. That is discipline plus hard work. Decency, for us, is very key too; there seems to be a lot of over-eroticism. Yes, sex may sell but if you watch out for the things that are coming out from other parts of the world, you will agree if you look out for the subliminal PHVVDJHV WKDW VH[ LV QRW MXVW DFFHSWDEOH Also, we tell the contestants to speak clearly and politely. Talking about MTN PFWA, we have had Mike, Iyanya, Praiz, Chidinma and the list keeps growing. Many observers are of the opinion that MTN PFWA is steps ahead of other music reality shows. What, in your opinion, is the academy doing right? One is the faculty. The faculty is very strong because the members have their areas of strength: they are URXQG SHJV LQ URXQG KROHV QRW URXQG SHJV LQ VTXDUH holes. When you have that, it means you have a very strong person in charge of dance, style and creativity (respectively). It means that whatever performance they have, you have somebody who is an exceptional trainer. We also have a very strong production company. acting background, one of the value-added I bring to the faculty is expertise in stage craft. For a lot of artistes, you know what it is intellectually but what connects you with the audience, the connection power, is the emotion. You have got to express your emotions to connect with the audience. That is all part of interpretation. The contestants work with me on this and other faculty members as well, on how to interpret whatever they have through dance. And then, they are also made to understand the importance of dance and movement. Of course, there is a difference between dance and movement. This explains why you see their videos and it looks like this person knows how to dance but when \RX FRPH IRU WKHLU OLYH SHUIRUPDQFH LW¡V GLIIHUHQW Someone like Chidinma, for example, was not a stage SHUVRQ LQ WKH DFDGHP\ EXW E\ WKH WLPH VKH Ă€QLVKHG VKH had an understanding of what stage performance is all about. Most importantly, because the products of the academy have been so successful, it makes them even more interested in learning. <RXU HQWKXVLDVP LV TXLWH LQIHFWLRXV DQG , FDQ¡W KHOS EXW WKLQN WKDW \RX DUH IXOĂ€OOHG $UH \RX DW WKDW SRLQW in your life where this is what you wish to be doing? unraveled and discussed about the female gender. And the amazing truth is that female issues cannot be over emphasized, as (if I may paraphrase Benjamin Disraeli) “The Woman is the pillar on which our collective future is builtâ€? As the woman understands her purpose in life through self discovery and self actualization, her horizon is widened. She constantly prowls back to the society her capabilities and giftedness. The woman however, has preceding stages of development before she attains that maturity that ushers her into the embodiment of varying responsibilities.
