GRECIAN RED CAR By Yemisi Suleiman Grecian dresses are taking over the catwalks now; classic, beautiful and elegant, Grecian inspired dresses are everywhere, from classic cuts to long ball gowns and elegant evening dresses. Grecian dresses take their inspiration from the togas of the ancient Romans and Greeks, and are characterized by beautiful draping, empire line or natural waistlines and occasional braiding. Our favourite sylish women are not afraid to break with tradition, and many of the standout looks of the past seasons struck a dazzling note. Ndidi Obioha stunned in a strapless number of her own stock, keeping things simple, elegant and streamlined. Munachi also favourd minimalism with her thigh high slit

Like pla plaid, ankara, chunky jewellery and supersize ba bags which seem to have stamped their feet on trend, lace has also made a come back and get getting big attention. Height Matters By Jemi Ekunkunbor

The world woke up a few years ago to experience the surge of structural shoes thrown at buyers by shoe designers from around the world. The designers seemed to be telling fashionistas the days were over when shoes were just regular. Accessories were pushed to the front burner and every one who adorned these unusual shoes, succeeded in drawing attention away from their clothes to these beautiful works of art. Shoes siezed attention from clothes and the world saw creativity at its best. Just when you think you have seen something very unusual, someone shows up wearing a pair you can hardly describe. Height and shape became everything. It was a case of putting your best foot forward. Today, the trend for unusual heels continues. Whatever label you choose to subscribe to, just make sure what you are buying is as high as a skyscraper; in which case you have to prepare to walk tall. FOLASADE OGUNSOLA -Breaking the glass ceiling By Jemi Ekunkunbor

P

rofessor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Until her election in 2013, no woman has accomplished that feat in the 50 year history of that institution. Her victory was not just for the female doctors in Lagos alone, but for the female doctors across the country that have never had the privilege of manning the position of Provost across colleges of medicine in the nation’s Universities. Born to Professor Akin Mabogunje and Justice Titilola Mabogunje, a retired high court judge in Ogun State, the young Folasade, the first of five children, began her educational career at the Queen’s College, Lagos where she fell in love with music and distinguished herself as a fine Mezzo Soprano. Her medical journey began at the then, University of Ife where she studied medicine and graduated in 1982. She obtained her Master’s degree in medical micro biology in 1990 from the University of Lagos. That same year, she started her residency and later in 1995, she started work as a lecturer at the same University. In 1998, she obtained her PhD. from the University of Wales, Cardiff. She was made a professor in 2008. The elegant doctor, whose looks belies her age, is married to Mr. Segun Ogunsola, a chartered accountant and they are blessed with three children, and grandchildren. 8

Health is a large word. It embraces not the body only, but the mind and spirit as well;‌ and not today’s pain or pleasure alone, but the whole being and outlook of a man.

Hello my dear readers, today’s topic is back due to popular demand. I got a lot of emails wanting more remedies so I have put these 11 tips together for you to adhere to and try out at home. 1. TERI Speaks Hi Teri, Hi Teri, hope u had a good day. I like reading ur columns in Sunday Vanguard newspapers. Please I want to know if Margarine is different from Butter. Secondly, could u please tell me where I can buy a bag of brown rice. I also want to know where I can get Ofada rice (bag) that is sand and chaff-free. God bless you real good. Chimmy

Good day Chimmy, Simply put, Butter is made from cream, margarine is hydrogenated vegetable oil. Brown rice and Ofada rice are readily available and now come in packs like Uncle Ben’s rice. In Lagos, Park and shop, Ebeano Supermarket as well as Sura shopping mall all sell Ofada Rice. If in Abuja, try Amigos Supermanrket or Grand Square. Hope this helps. Best wishes, Teri M.

NUANCE OF THE GIRL-CHILD - part 2 Generally, a girl-child is a female child below the age of eighteen. Indeed, several charters have addressed the importance of the well-being of children especially the girl child. In the Nigerian social structure, the position of the girl-child is a source of concern, largely characterized by the practice of institutionalized patriarchy and polygamy. The girl-child often times faces some sort of discrimination in areas such as education, health, nutrition, household

chores, girl infanticide and foeticide among others. Hence she is a victim of harmful traditional practices. In the patriarchal African tradition, the girl-child is perceived to be attributed less value than her male counterpart. As babies, the difference between boys and girls seem small but their opportunities for education and development becomes glaringly unequal. At various times also, reports have described acts in which

many females babies are weaned earlier than the males as discriminatory, and following this, the girl-child often times begins to nurse a feeling of worthlessness and low self esteem, as the boys are often shown preference, as against WKH FRQĂ€GHQFH WKDW KHU EHLQJ an individual with unlimited potentials who should be treated with nothing short of profound love and affection,

In most communities when a wife has not given her husband a male child, she worries and even adopts unspeakable measures to ensure she gets one regardless of the biological conditions that must be in place before the conception of the male child.
