Fall Fashion Forecast
Article and photos by Laura Crawford of Pretty Petunias (prettypetunias.com)
SWEATER WEATHER With the beautiful hues and the cooler temperatures of autumn, arrive all the layers - making it a terrific time for fashion! So break out the scarves, hats and boots. But don’t pack up the shorts and culottes just yet. Instead wear them with the sweater and scarf or add some wool socks and short boots.
HATS AND SCARVES Light weight bamboo beanies are where it is at for these transitional months. And our favorite Peggalish Beanies never disappoint. Play around with an unexpected scarf. No need to stick only to children’s scarves either. A larger, chunkier scarf adds drama, warmth and style.
PLAIDS Few things embody cool weather and autumn like plaid! Our favorites this year are definitely the buffalo plaid and Burberry inspired prints.
DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE It’s always in the details. The small things make an outfit. A short gold zipper or a length of buttons down the back of a classic sweater can give it extra interest.
CHUNKY KNITS A thick knit sweater or scarf can do wonders. Though the classics are hard to mess with, perhaps try one of the bright hues popular this year like coral, mustard or burnt orange!
A simple oversized bow or faux leather scrunchie can elevate a look. Try hand knitting your own scarf in an unexpected hue! Added faux fur or fuzzy trim on jackets, boots and even ear muffs, can show off personality and add warmth.

VKFW FALL WINTER 2018
At a young age, we are thought to spread our wings and never be afraid to soar high, that there are no dreams too high nor too dull. Amoriki does that exactly, but with an extra dose of colors. Amoriki is a Mexican brand aiming at empowering children by igniting their inner magic with colorful, shiny wings, and feathers releasing the whimsical and
imaginative play that lives inside every child. Their colors and prints are often reminiscent of Mexico’s vibrant and festive culture. The fabrics that they use are carefully selected to obtain the texture and depth that help start their exceptional journey. Every piece from Amoriki’s collections are hand made and printed in Mexico by women from local communities.

On the Surface: Fall Fashion The onset of cooler weather and bundling up might not sound like fun, but that doesn’t mean the trends can’t be. This fall has come with styles, colors, and textiles that are full of pizzazz with hints of vintage and retro feels.
from nature and sprig work, tribal, astrological, patchwork, and brush or stroke patterns. The biggest sub trend within that of print and pattern, might just be animal. Dare to mix patterns or try a single accent accessory for something less bold.
COLORS. NOT ALL DARK AND MOODY. Black, browns, and burgundy are no stranger to most fall-winter fashion but this season has so much more than just that. Of course, these foliage resembling shades are present but so are playful and rich shades like deep blues, milk chocolate brown, bold reds, greens as fun as teal, mustard yellow, burnt orange and its earth inspired in-between shade, ochre.
STYLES. WHAT’S OLD IS NEW. Generally speaking, cuts and styles are significantly borrowed from old school trends. Things like straight leg crops, cuffed hems, visible or knee high socks, pattern mixing, color blocking and a low maintenance favorite, coordinates/sets.
TEXTURES. ADD SOME FEEL. There’s no better season for textured textiles than now. From runways, to big box, to independent designers – materials including the infamous cold weather corduroy, cashmere, waffle, and the likes of velvet (or brushed cotton: an easier to maintain fabric with similar look and soft to touch feel, for little ones) are in full force. PRINTS. PLAY WITH PATTERNS. In addition to killer colors and intriguing textures, a major player this season is print and pattern. An increasing amount of abstract prints and handdone or organic patterns makes for a lot of fun pieces available. With much inspiration drawn

URBAN ORIGINALS (Art of Happiness Vegan Leather Crossbody Bag $92.11)
The warm green color in soft vegan leather just screams fall. If I were to only get one bag this fall, this would have to be it. It can easily go from a crossbody for daytime, to clutch at night! All I have to do is remove the straps, talk about versatility.
BACKPACK (Matt and Nat Fabi Mini $145) I’m loving the 90’s vibes in the last few seasons (90’s babe here!). This backpack is the perfect size for everyday and even holds an iPad or MacBook Air.
Vegan Alternatives to Your Everyday Bags Article by Reginia Lok Von (reglok.ca)
Each season will have its “it” bags - some are original,
some carried over from last season and some with updates. Over the years, there has also been more awareness around conscious fashion. But durability and style continue to be a priority that some enthusiasts aren’t willing to forgo. Vegan brands have come a long way! Here are the top 5 vegan and ecofriendly “it” bags this season. BUCKET BAG (Alixane $364.89) Bucket bags reappeared on the fashion scene a few years ago and they are still going strong - I mean, did they even leave? I love a beautifully crafted bucket bag. They hold so much more than they look!
FEMININE, CHIC + FUNCTIONAL (Ted Baker London Keiira Lady Bag Satchel $267 and Stella McCartney Falabella - Shaggy Deer Crossbody $1045) How much do I love seeing designers dive into vegan materials? Ted Baker London and Stella McCartney did! We all need one of those bags for those extra special evenings out - but when they aren’t being used all that frequently, it’s hard to justify spending money on them. Trick is to find one that has a simple silhouette and a little sparkle. This one from Ted Baker has rose gold hardware which works perfectly with the neutral pale pink color. The slim shoulder straps also make it perfect for running errands during the day. Stella McCartney’s chain strap lends an edge against the shimmery faux leather. Love them both.

GUO PEI: COUTURE BEYOND Vancouver Art Scene Article by Patti Yabut Photos Courtesy of SCAD
Opulent and dramatic, Vancouver Art Gallery debuts their first ever exhibition focusing on the intersection of art and fashion with China’s foremost couturière. The Guo Pei: Couture Beyond exhibit opened last October 13th, and prior to its public opening, the gallery held a media event including a personal experience to meet the designer herself followed by a sample of Guo Pei inspired menu created by Chef de Cuisine Will Lew at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver’s luxurious Notch8 Restaurant and Bar. Guo has been creating couture pieces for more than three decades, before Rihanna stepped on to the red carpet of the Met three years ago, clad in the twenty-five-kilo-canary yellow silk gold-spun-thread cape lined with fox fur trims and embellished with ornate embroidery (or simply the Yellow Empress cape),

and catapulted the couturière to fame. This piece is one of the 40+ designs that will grace the halls of the Vancouver Art Gallery until January 20, 2019. The exhibition follows Guo’s design evolution filled with her distinct reestablishment of ancient crafting techniques and avantgarde silhouettes. Grandeur fills the gallery as her masterpieces evoke the decadence of China’s historical dynasties. “Guo Pei’s pursuit of excellence is unmistakable in every stitch of her creations. Each of her designs is a masterpiece and feat of craftsmanship that will undoubtedly captivate fashion-savvy visitors and art-lovers alike in this Canadian premiere,” says Kathleen S. Bartels, Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Not only is Guo Pei the first Chinese national to showcase at Paris Couture Week, her majestic creations also made her the only Chinese national designer invited to join Paris’ prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Only someone as revolutionary as Guo Pei can give justice to an exhibit combining the art and fashion industry.

Traveling with Kids: Tips and Tricks Article by Connie Peters (modernmama.com)
We’ve been traveling since well before kids, so when we had our first daughter, we just kept on traveling. Her first big trip was two weeks on the beach in Negril, Jamaica where we rented a onebedroom cabin on the beach. It was amazing. Don’t get me wrong, travel with kids isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s hard work. I remember when the girls were younger, I felt like traveling was TOO much work in some cases. But, in general, travel with kids is amazing and totally worth it. FLYING WITH LITTLES NURSING – If they’re really little and still nursing, remember to nurse on takeoff and descent as it can really help them feel better in their ears and with the pressure. SURPRISES – Bring a new toy or game that suits their age. Perhaps even wrap it up like a gift if they’re old enough to appreciate a gift. It can be something as simple as a new teething toy for an infant, to a puzzle or book from the dollar store for the older ones.
Photo by Bang Jo for Fun N Fly
ACTIVITY BAG – I packed a small notebook or ‘travel journal’ with new crayons, markers and stickers for every single trip we took when they were little. A coloring book for when they’re too little for their own drawing and writing is perfect. CHANGE OF CLOTHES – It never fails, the day they have the blowout, you don’t have an extra sleeper in the diaper bag. You do not want this happening on a flight – short or long! Be sure you have extra diapers and at least one change of clothes in your carry-on (a change for you too!).
SNACKS –Can you go anywhere without snacks for a toddler? No. No, you cannot. It’s a fact. So flying is no different. FLYING WITH OLDER KIDS SELF-PACKING – They can bring whatever they want as long as it fits in their back pack, that they must carry themselves. My nine year old still tries to get away with not carrying her own, but it doesn’t work – she MUST be able to carry it. So, if the 3 dolls, coloring book and iPad are too heavy or bulky for her to carry it, it gets left at home. SNACKS – If they’re older, you can likely pack less snacks and just buy them something at the airport or on-board. This saves room in everyone’s bags. I will generally buy them each one treat prior to the trip to save in their backpack themselves. ROAD TRIPS MATTRESS – If you’re a family of five, pack a simple single folding mattress in your car for any hotel stays. That way you don’t need to book two rooms, or a suite. We always travel with ours, we never have to worry about a roll-away cot or being upgraded to a more expensive, larger, room type. SNACKS – You’ll want healthy snacks and lots of bottled water for the road. I made the mistake of loading up on candy and treats for our last long drive as well, and my husband had a great point: with every gas station stop, let them each pick ONE candy or treat there. That way they’re not binging on it all at once and then everything is gone. I’m sharing from experience. Enjoy your family travels!

EEPPLE Eepple is derived from the Korean language which means the pure laughter of children. For husband and wife founders of the brand, Uhm Tae-jong and Kim Ah-ram, it is also a representation of their snug and stylish designs, that prioritize softness and coziness, making the kids’ playtime even more comfortable and enjoyable. The brand, which launched in August 2017, prides itself in creating only the highest quality clothes for your little ones, using only the finest natural cotton that is both non-irritating and eco-friendly. Their collections are a blend of contemporary and traditional elements, adorned with
vintage embroidery and delicate prints, and are often inspired by old buildings, traditional objects, and their travel experiences. Each of their quaint designs have their own stories to tell. From the choice of color palette, to its prints and silhouettes. The cheerful nature of each of the collection reflects the buoyancy of children and their spirited laughters.

If Frida Kahlo was a little girl born in this generation, she would have been a patron of Coco Au Lait, a kidswear brand based in Mexico and Spain. Her fondness for vibrant colors, combining both Mexican and European influence, as well as the flora and fauna, would have drawn her to the brand. LA HISTORIA: FOUNDING COCO AU LAIT Founders Erica Elias and Maribel Lopez, met while in college in Mexico City. From there, they became good friends and frequent travel companions. A few years later, Maribel moved to Madrid, where the brand’s Spanish influence stems from. Its combination of world-class Spanish tailoring and the beautiful and vibrant colors MeĚ xico is known for, is one of its distinct characteristics.

The need and desire to establish their own label sparked from not being able to find the right clothes for their kids. Later on, they both decided to team up and launch their own childrenswear label, hence, Coco Au Lait (pronounced: coco-olé). LA COLECCIÓN: TULUM Coco Au Lait’s Spring / Summer 2019 collection took inspiration from Tulum, a Caribbean coastline town in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Tulum is know for its quaint sandy beaches, old world charm with ever-changing scene of blue and green shades and exuberant flora and fauna, and its pre-Columbian Mayan ruins.

Stage One Academy believes that fashion is a form of a universal language which allows constructing and deconstructing our identities, to play whatever role we want by shaping our look to show certain attitude or values. It’s fascinating how quickly a piece of clothing can change how we feel, how we hold ourselves, and even how we act. Vancouver Kids Fashion Week has been growing over the last few years to reflect the rising trend in fashionable clothing made for kids. Stage One Academy will render full support to the event as its title sponsor for this season, and in working towards the same goal, helping each kid truly feel confident, making their dreams come true.

Mini Me: Do’s and Dont’s In the past year, this fun trend has been popping up everywhere, parents and kids dressing in matching outfits. This is certainly a trend that I love, and I don’t think it is going anywhere. With huge brands like Kenzo and Gucci jumping on this bandwagon and creating amazing matching outfits for parents and their kids, it has trickled down to affordable shops such as Old Navy, H&M and Zara, creating beautiful pieces for moms and their kids. But sometimes, this trend can go a little too far and border the cheesy arena. To keep the mini me matching outfits looking adorable instead of crazy, try to stay away from cartoon prints, matching light up shoes or crazy loud colorful tights. You want to stay away from looking like a clown and leave the matching costumes for Halloween.
30
VKFW FALL WINTER 2018
If twinning with your kiddo seems daunting, start out matching hair dos, or matching nail polish. Start out subtle and work your way up to matching outfits. The matching outfits don’t always have to be exactly the same; it could be wearing outfits in the same color family or choosing similar items, but wearing it differently. Such as the photo below, by choosing one similar item, you still look the same but are dressed differently. You don’t need to find the exact style. Mini me fashion is about the common theme, color combination matters. Even if you go with only the same color with your kiddo, the result will be incredible. Try to match same colors in your jeans, tops and enrich your look by adding accessories to your style. Since it’s getting cold, you can finalize your style by using scarves, hats and gloves too.

VKFW was thrilled to enter our fifth season with an incredible line up of local and international designers from all over the world. The designers, models, and guests all gathered at our runway location at the šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk (formerly, Vancouver Art Gallery’s North Plaza) on September 22nd and 23rd to celebrate new and upcoming styles in kids fashion today. The show would not have gone off with so much success without the support of its sponsors and partners, Stage One Academy, Feng Feng Academy and Indigo Education, and more. VKFW would not have pulled off its most successful show yet without their continued support.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Coming backstage is like entering another world, with rack of garments, hair and makeup artists prepping their tools, and adorable kids models under foot wherever you are. Despite the rain and the chilly weather, designer and kids alike were all buzzing with excitement as the doors opened and the models lined up for their big walk. As the lights dimmed and voices hushed an electrified silence spread over staff and models and the show began.
DAY ONE
VKFW welcomed a large turnout from the local community as well as international media from Youngstrs

Our day started off with two amazing designers, Joy & Joa from China and local boutique Blake & Riley. Joy & Joa, presented by Superkids Agency, showed their bespoke and couture
garments for girls of all ages to feel like a princess in any occasion. Blake & Riley presented casual yet inspired ensembles from their store that are perfect for living in everyday. After the break, the audience was delighted with a performance by the students of Stage One Academy. Then we saw the designs of Coco Au Lait, a colorful collection with prints and graphics inspired by the culture of Mexico where the brand originates. Afterwards there was another wonderful performance from Feng Feng Academy. The day closed out with Korean brand Eepple, a line of clothing for littles that blends minimalism and eco-friendly fabrics.

DAY TWO
The second day of Vancouver Kids Fashion Week was packed with more incredible designers from all over the world. The day started with Amoriki, whose brightly colored and patterned wings are the favorite of any child’s dress up box. Next was local designer Bees Knee’s Beach, who presented a collection of old-fashioned beachwear for littles with a modern update in nautical prints and colors. Afterwards, Stage One Academy delighted the audience with a performance from one of their talented students. Our next show came from local designer Lil Worker Safety, a line of children’s safety gear inspired to make playing safe for kids. Afterwards we saw the brand Kindluv, who presented a positive message about being kind and open to everyone in an effort to stand up to bullying. To close out the show, Erwen presented by Stage One Academy showed a mini me collection for both boys and girls that makes fashion a modern day fairy tale. After our season ended, the fun continued with a workshop presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery that let families create art projects inspired by their current exhibitions.
Amoriki This fantasy-inspired brand from Mexico brought a little magic to the runway with colorful wings made of many different fabrics. Their fun wings were paired with unique headpieces that allowed each kid to shine with their own special personality.
Bees Knee’s Beach Local designer Chris Nagy presented a fun beachwear collection inspired by classic swimwear of the 20s with modern updates of nautical prints and color, unisex pieces and sun-safe fabric that will make swim time not only safe, but stylish.

Workshop Presented by the Vancouver Art Gallery Erwen presented by Stage One Academy This brand, presented by Stage One Academy, showed the intersection of fantasy and current trends in a modern-day fairy tale collection that used ribbons and tulle with simple form and design to make dressing up a fashion-must.
This season ended with a workshop hosted by the Vancouver Art Gallery, who partnered with VKFW to bring families a fun activity inspired by the exhibition, Ayumi Goto and Peter Morin: how do you carry the land? Life with them is extremely funny and we love to spend as much time as possible all together. But group dynamics are very different from one-on-one and individual time is very important for kids. We are not talking about just any time, but a special one-on-one time that makes each of them feel special, boosts their self-esteem and makes them feel like they are seen, heard and known! This is the time that will shape their personality and remain as they grow older. Being so important, it’s good to find ways to make it happen so it doesn’t fall through the cracks. But with multiple children, it can be very hard... So, how to spend One-on-one time with each child?
There are various tips on spending one-on-one time with each child, from running errands with one child at time, to walking around the neighborhood or having one of them per day help with the meals or with the chores… but the one that we prefer is planning it, just as if it was a date. With Anna and Alice, the big ones, we do it on a regular base and they enjoy the planning time as much as the actual activity one!
the square is full of pigeons we had a good time chasing and feeding them. And it couldn’t be a real good time together without an ice cream – Alice loves them. So, even if it was October, we ended up eating a delicious Italian homemade ice cream. It was one of the best times ever!
The photos that you see here have been taken during one of these oneon-one moments with Alice. She loves going out shopping and so she decided to go to Milan city center. We took the tram just around the corner from our home and got off next to the Duomo square. We took a walk towards the cathedral and spent some time admiring it! And since

What little girl did not, even just once in her life, dream of being a princess? She may not always be the type who a brave and charming prince or a knight in shining armor saves from a fiery dragon in a deserted castle tower, nor the type who loses her shoe whilst on a run to meet the midnight curfew. But isn’t there a part in every girl that wants to be stuck in a fairytale with castles, dresses, grand balls, magic, and fairy godmothers?
our desire to live in royalty and aristocracy, and is nothing short of magical. THE DESIGNER Ms. Xing Ma, the founder and head designer of Joy and Joa, graduated from Donghua University in Shanghai. She has been traveling around France, and has since become one of the up-and-coming luxury children’s wear designers in the fashion industry. Her distinct style and unique approach to luxury kidswear revalued the Chinese childrenswear market, and earned her invites to various fashion weeks abroad. Surely there is more to look forward to for the dexterous designer and her brand.

“Most babies and kids are sensitive. Many infants or kids are suffering from skin diseases. They need more soft, organic and healthy care. So we chose to use 100% organic cotton as our material. More than that, we wanted to tell people that the environment is important to us. And that our products are definitely environment friendly.” Blara Organic’s head designer Ann when asked about her inspiration behind the brand.
Blara Organic Blara Organics was one of the innovative brands that took the stage this season at VKFW, presenting us with a unique high end collection of organic cotton clothing for both children and their families across the globe. Blara Organic House believes that it is not enough that they build high quality designs, they also ensure that they maintain the four core values of their brand, so as to provide clothing that is: soft, comfortable, healthy, and environmentally friendly as well. “Most babies and kids are sensitive. of Blara organic house recreate stunning patterns in their designs, combining them with the unlikely medium of traditional organic cotton. This collection utilizes natural dyeing techniques, that make each piece unique, and add an adorable finishing touch. More than that, the most important feature of this technique is that the stained water can be used after dyeing in irrigation, thereby allowing for a greener and less wasteful production process. As a whole the central focus of Blara Organics has always been providing children with the highest quality clothing available: “As a mother myself, I would love to witness every baby or kid’s growth and continued health into adulthood. I would love to give them the best I can offer. That is why I choose this job,” says Ann. The fashion industry is the world’s second most polluting industry after oil; the textile industry uses more water than any industry apart from agriculture; these thoughts
have had been forgotten overtime, pushed away from the forefront of our minds. Blara’s collection for children and their families aims to bring these ideas to our attention once again, and provide these issues with a stylish and fun solution. They do so by designing clothing that is imbued with natural, pure, and environmentally friendly fabrics, that bring a soft and safe feeling to every mom, kid, and their family.

What happens when you take two busy boys, a planned long-haul international flight, and a love of Lego? You get Fun N’Fly! Well, at least the very first prototype. Back in December of 2015, Mommy Brain Creatives Inc. Founder Anita Fu, a seasoned air traveler, was preparing to travel to Asia solo with her two young children in tow. The boys – aged three and five – loved Lego with a passion and wanted to bring some along on their trip. One week before leaving, Anita realized that she needed something to keep all the Lego pieces contained while en route. The natural problem solver in her kicked into high gear and after a trip to the dollar store, the fabric store, and armed with a few materials from home, Anita, with the help of her mother-in-law, put together her very first Fun N’Fly travel tray. Although a bit rough around the edges, the original prototype served its purpose, and mostly importantly kept her boys happy and entertained (and the Lego off the floor!).
