|| YOUR LOCAL TEAM SO here we are in August, and it is holiday time for us in the VantagePoint office. While Lauren is staying in the UK for her camping holiday, Marcus and family are following in Nick and Angie’s footsteps and are off to Bulgaria for a couple of weeks. Jesse is off to the Leeds Festival while Jane is chasing the sun in Crete. As for Humphrey and I, we are off to la France profonde as usual for our fortnight with friends and French family. Cue much bread, cheese and wine consumption, alongside canine hair removal from the swimming pool. I can’t wait! More and more people choose a staycation and there is much to do in the local area and beyond. Day trips to London or to the coast, weekend camping trips, or just enjoying all the great places to

see or things to do on our own doorsteps. RHS Wisley, Brooklands, local museums, entertainment venues and most National Trust properties all have many events planned for the holiday period. For a cheaper option, and one of my favourite days out, why not go for a lovely walk in our beautiful countryside, with or without a pub stop en route. We have a couple of small walks this month suitable for the whole family, including toddlers and grandparents. For more ambitious walks, take a look at our website www.vantagepointmag.co.uk where we have a number of walks which can be downloaded and printed. Whatever you do, have a lovely summer!

Share of freehold - two questions to ask Estate agents often offer a flat for sale with “share of freehold” to entice buyers who understandably think this is better than buying a property which is only a leasehold. The first question to ask is “How long is the lease?” The freehold deals with the whole of the building, but with a flat, the critical aspect is how long is the lease of the flat in question? The leasehold is the legal interest which has value. It is the lease which is bought and sold, and most importantly, it is the leasehold interest which provides security to a mortgage lender. For technical reasons, buyers should be wary of a lease which has less than 85 years left to run. The second question to ask is “Who owns the freehold?” Freeholds can be owned in individual names, and in “share of freehold” situations this is usually the names of the lessees of the flats, or in the name of a company with each leaseholder having a share in that company.
have fallen out or one cannot be found. “Share of freehold” can be a poisoned chalice in these circumstances. Alternatively, the freehold can be held in the name of a company, and in this case, when a leaseholder sells his/her flat, it is a simple matter to transfer the share to the buyer. The ownership of the freehold remains the same at the Land Registry. The big advantage in buying a “share of freehold” is that all the co-owners of the freehold have the same goal – to maintain the value of their properties. As there is no third party involved, they will have control over how the property is managed and can arrange this in the most cost effective way. How can we help? Our residential property department is very experienced in advising on leases, and always happy to provide initial advice without obligation. Sonal Rabheru: sonal.rabheru@twmsolicitors.com
There are advantages and disadvantages in either of these arrangements. Freeholds held in individual names can sometimes be difficult to transfer because the co-freeholders

HANDMADE
MUSICAL
INSTRUMENTS Phil Kemp meets local craftsman and musician Mervyn Mewis We have many opportunities to enjoy live music at local venues. From blues, rock and pop through to jazz, folk and choral – and everything in between. And for the more adventurous have-a-go music fans there is also a vibrant community of enthusiasts who provide a chance to join like-minded
people in organised jam sessions, choral groups, or to take up one-on-one tuition. However, Godalming-based musician Mervyn Mewis goes one better - and in style for not only does he perform at a range of venues with his traditional musical instruments, he also designs and handcrafts them. But he doesn’t stop there. As a highly experienced woodworker and respected woodsman he literally sources the materials he needs from local woodland, prepares the raw wood and builds his instruments from scratch. Impressive, and even more so as Mervyn also runs classes so that others can benefit first-hand from his skills as instrument maker and musician. Oh, and furniture maker too! Mervyn invited me to join him for a personal introduction to his craft and a demonstration of how he performs with the range of instruments he builds. My time with him flew with unwelcome speed but will remain with me for what it proved to be – a fascinating, inspiring and enthusiastic tour of his craft. “It was at the Ram Cider House in Catteshall Lane I discovered English Irish folk music. It’s also where I met Kathryn Young my partner and where, by chance, I ran into a professional instrument maker,” Mervyn reminisced. “He offered to make me a musical instrument and it was he that instilled the idea of me trying for myself. Once I had got a City & Guilds in carpentry Kathryn suggested that I study musical instrument making, which I did, and it was there I built my first instruments.”

August 2017
Mervyn reached over to pick up a triangular-shaped string instrument, which I was to learn was a bowed psaltery. “This, and the hammer dulcimer, are two of my favourite instruments,” he explained. “Some 25 years ago in The Ram a lady played one of these and I had never heard

incredible depth and volume of sound coming from such a small hand-held instrument. “It’s not particularly difficult to play, and is very resonant and very expressive. From my very first bowed psaltery I started to experiment and change the design. I made it bigger and wider, thicker, deeper and longer – and I put a curve in it. For such a small instrument it’s not what you’d expect, and I’ve seen people stop in their tracks to listen, totally captivated.” Carefully placing the psaltery down, having scolded me for reaching out to touch the hair strings on the bow which apparently can be spoiled by human skin secretions, he sat on the stool by the large hammer dulcimer where it was resting on a wooden cradle, naturally also built by Mervyn. specifically for ornament. Those that come my way are either part of woodland management, or as thinning and dangerous tree work with people like the National Trust.” Mervyn started to gently strike at the dulcimer’s strings with a spoon-shaped mallet hammer in each of his hands. “With all of my instruments one thing that they have in common is that every single one of them to me is beautiful for their own intrinsic qualities. I use a range of timbers.
Where can you meet Mervyn? Mervyn gives demonstrations most Tuesdays and Wednesdays until the end of autumn at the Weald and Downland Living Museum www.wealddown.co.uk. 30th September–1st October, Surrey Hills Wood Fair, Bramley Saturday 16th December, Grayshott Folk Evening
From wild cherry, London plane and sycamore, to yew, elm, ash and western red cedar. All of these particular instruments came off the North Downs. My favourite is probably the ash tree – its timber is just so beautiful.” In response to my question as to how long it takes to make an instrument he stopped playing and ran his eyes over the dozen or so hand-made instruments on display. “It can vary considerably of course, but for this hammer dulcimer it took six to seven days of work, including the stand. That’s also taking into account the actual go-getting of the tree as well as preparation of the timber.” I could have very easily filled this magazine with everything I learned whilst with Mervyn, space I sadly didn’t have. If you want to listen to Mervyn, and Kathryn who incidentally plays a handmade harp, they play at venues around the country. If you would like to learn more, and perhaps even join Mervyn in one of his classes, please visit his website. YOUR HEALTH
IN YOUR OWN HANDS Welcome to Health Assess UK (HAUK) - www.healthassessuk.co.uk
‘Genomics’ has arrived and if it hasn’t yet fully registered on your consciousness, it will do soon. The NHS recognises the huge benefit of understanding and forecasting medical issues before they become critical and will no doubt commit ever-increasing financial resources to this area in future years. HealthAssessUK (HAUK), launched in late 2016, is an affordable health test which provides a special ‘moment in time’ health assessment and experience, designed to give everyone a real appreciation of their overall health today and if appropriate, a plan for the future. Importantly, this is a ‘now’ experience, not one you have to wait for. The founders of HAUK believe that most of us, deep down, want to make a prevention, not cure, decision and gain a reasonable understanding of our likely future health position. That said, it is appreciated that undertaking a health test is The Mews Practice
something most people will tend to put off until later for genuine reasons including – time, cost and simply not wanting to know if something’s wrong.
"Prevention is better than a cure" Professor David Haslam, Chairman, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) To combat this reluctance, the HAUK Health Test has been designed to be an enjoyable experience, one that is tailored specifically for each individual patient, delivered in state of the art facilities, by senior doctors and consultants. HAUK’s providing Medical Partners are based in Guildford at The Mews Practice (www.themewspractice.com) and County Pathology which is based at the Surrey Research Park (www.countypathology.co.uk). The HAUK website (www.healthassess.co.uk) tells the story in much more detail but they believe a one-to-one conversation with a real person is so important. A couple of months ago, the editor of VantagePoint magazine, Stefan Reynolds, decided to undergo a health test with HAUK and he has written about his experiences overleaf...

YOUR HEALTH IN YOUR OWN HANDS In conclusion, the HAUK test gives men and women an absolute understanding of their health status today. With that knowledge and if appropriate, a wellness plan can be designed to reduce biological age, increase longevity and very importantly enjoy life longer.

CASE STUDY When I first heard about the Health Assess UK test, I was quite attracted to the idea of a ‘health MOT’ so long as the cost was affordable. Like many people my age (I am 46), I have no concerns about my health and rarely visit my doctor. That said, I very sadly lost an old school friend to cancer around three years ago and only last year heard that the husband of another school friend had also succumbed to the same disease, both in their early to mid-forties.
After breakfast, it was time for a personal consultation with the doctor. He asked me about my medical history, that of my family and various lifestyle questions including all the usual suspects such as smoking, drinking, physical activity and sleep behaviour. This was then followed by a full examination.
Having heard my very own MP, Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, speak at a number of functions, I am only too aware that prevention is better than cure, and that for both the patient and the state it is fundamentally important to try and stop things developing as early as possible. Given my rare visits to the doctor, I thought that the HAUK test was probably something I should get done so that my general assumptions about my health could be tested and should there be any causes for concern, they could be dealt with.
Happily, it was all pretty positive although interestingly the blood test had picked up the fact that I had a very slightly underactive thyroid, something my mother and sister both have, and something for which the doctor gave me a prescription. He suggested I could lose a tiny bit of weight and drink a little less, but that was only to be expected. The doctor also suggested a couple of other mini-changes but the overall picture was happily positive and reassuring.
The test was easy to arrange and an appointment was made. I had to be ‘nil by mouth’ for 12 hours prior to the appointment but was offered a small choice of breakfast which I was asked to email them in advance. I duly presented myself at 9am at the very inviting Mews Practice in Guildford one morning, where I was met by one of the charming nurses. The first part of the test was the main checkup. This included fasting blood tests including PSA, plus the usual weight, height and BMI tests. Also included was audiology, spirometry, blood gas oxygen levels, urinalysis and a resting electrocardiogram (ECG). This was followed by the breakfast break, with some much-needed (and very good) coffee, while the blood samples were sent by courier to County Pathology on Surrey Research Park. 16
As the blood tests are back within an hour or so, the doctor was then able to go through all the results with me in great detail, which was terrifically informative and interesting.
As part of the test, a follow-up appointment was also arranged for the following month to answer any questions I might have once I had the chance to read the full report which was being prepared, and in my case to discuss if the prescription he had given me was working. So was it worth it? Yes, in short. This was a comprehensive, general health assessment which was a good thing to have undertaken and something I will look to repeat in say five years just to make sure that nothing is out of kilter. Happily it showed nothing untoward, but did pick up a (minor) issue I was unaware of and the doctor gave me a few pieces of good advice for the future. I have even lost half a stone as well since, so I’ll raise my (non-alcoholic) glass to that! Stefan Reynolds

FESTIVAL OF FINE
10.09.17
Love local food? Then you will love this! G Live, Guildford’s busiest arts and entertainment venue, is holding its first ever Festival of Fine Food & Drink on Sunday 10th September.
east,” says Tracy Carroll, founder of Local Food Britain. “September is the perfect time to share and celebrate the bounty of this corner of Britain.”
FOOD & DRINK It has joined forces with Local Food Britain, the food network of London and the South East, to showcase quality handcrafted products that will be a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. What better way to celebrate harvest time than to eat and drink delicious goodies from more than 40 producers from Surrey, Sussex, Kent and London. Sample the best from artisan bread makers, wine producers, butchers, fruit and vegetable growers, cake specialists and many more.
As well as exhibition stalls laden with gourmet delicacies, there will be masterclasses, food and drink demonstrations and a Local Food Afternoon Tea using ingredients from some of the exhibitors. Children will be invited to decorate plates with their favourite or imaginary food designs which will be displayed in a special gallery at G Live before and after the event. Home chefs will be able to bring in their produce to be judged by an expert Local Food Britain panel. And if that isn’t enough to whet the appetite, there will also be a hog roast and a barbecue!
Let temptation get in the way and try crumbly buttery fudge from Mummy Makes Fudge, based in Farnham, or tingle the taste buds with Deelicious Chilli Jams made in Aldershot. Try a tipple or two from Silent Pool Gin and local wine producers Albury Organic Vineyards and Greyfriars, or sip the summer’s newest beer from Reigate’s Crumbs Brewing. There will also be opportunities to buy gourmet goodies for enjoying at home.
G Live’s Director, Tim Brinkman, says: “I am very excited to be holding our first ever food and drink festival. I encourage visitors to come hungry and celebrate with us the wonderful produce from the south east.”
“This is a hands-on food festival and families will truly be able to immerse themselves in the sight, smell and taste of the very best from the south
To find out more or to register for your free entry or to book a masterclass, visit www.GLive.co.uk, drop in or call the Ticketing Desk on 01483 369350.

Over 12 million people invested in an ISA last tax year. Why? Here are the reasons: Excellent tax benefits ISAs offer the opportunity to build a significant portfolio, free from UK income and capital gains tax. Generous tax free allowances. This tax year (2017/18) the ISA annual contribution level has increased by £4,760 which means you can now invest £20,000 individually (or £40,000 as a couple) across all your ISAs and protect your money from the taxman, either as a lump sum or by setting up monthly payments. Free from capital gains tax. An ISA is free from capital gains tax and UK income tax and as a consequence doesn’t need to be declared on tax returns. As an investor you should use the tax saving vehicles most suited to your circumstances and needs. Full access and flexibility Funds are always liquid to provide you with a lump sum or monthly tax free income at any time. Ideal for tax free retirement income. ISA savers and investors are able to transfer their accounts without restriction or tax charge, which means that they can move their ISA savings into the account which financially suits them best at that point in their life. And finally, use it don’t lose it! Remember that your 2017/18 ISA allowance must be used by 5th April 2018, you cannot ‘roll over’ your ISA investment allowance into the following tax year. If you don’t use your allowance before the 5th April then you will have missed out on the opportunity to shelter more of your savings and investments from tax. So make sure you invest your money each year. For independent ISA investment advice call us on our Freefone number or email us on address below. *The value of investments and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original amount invested and the levels, basis and reliefs of taxation are subject to change. With Beth Otway
Jonathan Hogarth and his Hostas Jonathan Hogarth holds the National Collection of small and miniature Hostas. In 2016 Jonathan exhibited his Hosta collection at the RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace Flower Shows, and was presented with a Gold Medal by the RHS judges at both events. In 2017 the RHS judges at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show awarded Jonathan Hogarth a Silver Medal for his display of miniature and small Hostas. I met Jonathan at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show to learn more about his Hosta collection and his unstoppable passion for this particular plant genus. Beth: So who first introduced you to miniature Hostas, or did you come across Hostas for the first time in a garden? Jonathan: I bought a house and it came with a Hosta. From there, ten years and two children later, we went to visit some friends and I saw there were different Hostas there.
August 2017
I thought there was only a green Hosta! So I started getting a yellow one, the blue one, and then I found the variegated ones, so I came away with twelve different Hostas. I knew how to grow Hostas by then, as for 10 years I’d looked after my plant, put a few slug pellets around and it almost looked after itself. I thought to myself, well this Hosta is quite a nice plant – it’s looking after me as much as I’m looking after it! Beth: Yes it is! JH: I then found a specialist Hosta nursery, and I joined the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society, of which I have recently been appointed as Chairman. Beth: How exciting, congratulations! Beth: Are there any new Hosta plants featured in your exhibit? JH: Hosta 'Mini Skirt' is the new plant. Beth: What’s special about Hosta 'Mini Skirt'? JH: Hosta 'Mini Skirt' was produced in 2013 by Walters Gardens. In 2014 I bought it in America. In 2017 it has just become available in the UK for the first time. It’s a beautiful plant, with a really yellowy, frilly white edge to it, just like Marilyn Monroe’s skirt when she was holding it down with the wind blowing up from the grate. It’s just so pretty like that. And of course it’s one of the Blue Mouse Ears Series, it's just an unbelievable plant, it really is.

Beth: I have previously written about Hostas that I had grown, which hadn’t at the time suffered from slug damage; I think the slugs read my articles, because since then many of my Hostas have been damaged! JH: It’s down to the thickness of the leaf. If the slug or the snail tries to bite the Hosta and can’t get a hold of the leaf, it gives up. But it’s different as the Hosta is coming out of the ground. If the slug can get to the leaf then, as it’s coming out of the ground, it’ll nibble away. Those nice, thick leaves are still quite soft when they're young, so the slug will most likely go crazy and destroy all the leaves. But if you can let the plant grow for about a month, and keep the slugs and snails at bay, then you’re onto a winner. The plants in the Blue Mouse Ears Series produce a thicker leaf and it does put the slugs off. To say it’s slug proof is not what it is. But if the slugs and snails can’t chew a hole through the leaf and carry on nibbling, they’ll just tell all their friends to ‘forget it’, so there you are.
two things – it kills the slugs and snail eggs completely, and it kills the slugs and snails themselves. One of our society members makes an effective slug deterrent; they put a garlic bulb into some tights, put this in a pint of water and simmer for twenty minutes. Discard the tights and garlic mush, and leave to cool. Add about five drops of the garlic concentrate to a one-pint container of water; spray under the leaves, and on top, to keep the slugs and snails at bay. Beth: Did you have a favourite garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show? JH: Chris Beardshaw's garden was my favourite. Hosta Mini Skirt
Beth: Which Hostas would you recommend that offer the most resistance to slugs and snails? JH: There’s some medium to large Hostas, such as Hosta 'Rhino Hide' and Hosta 'Sum and Substance'. Beth: Yes, Sum and Substance is a lovely Hosta, although that has been eaten this year. JH: It has, because as the plant came up from the ground it will have been nibbled. There are some ways around it – and that’s to use a weak ammonia mix before the plants emerge in the spring. Use a small amount, put it into your watering can, as a weak solution and water it all over the area where the Hostas are growing in the ground. It does

Homemade Lemonade
This is such a simple recipe, but really delicious on a hot day. You could always add less water and then top up with sparkling water to the 1 ½ pint mark before serving. Ingredients: 3 large juicy lemons, 175 g sugar, 900 ml boiling water Makes 1.5 pints 1. Pare the washed lemons with a potato peeler taking care not to get any of the bitter pith. 2. Put the rind and sugar into a bowl or large jug and pour over the boiling water. Cover, stirring occasionally, and allow to cool. 3. Add the juice of the lemons and strain before serving.
Roasted Cod with Olives, Pesto and Parma Ham
This is one of my many made up recipes. The Parma ham and pesto ensures that the cod remains moist. Ingredients: 4 pieces of chunky cod loin 6 slices of Parma ham ½ jar of pesto, any colour you fancy About 20 olives, I use green, cut in half Serves 4

4. Finish wrapping the Parma ham over the rest of the fish. 5. Repeat with the other 3 fillets. 6. Bake for around 15 minutes or until the ham is crispy and golden brown.

Family walks with the National Trust This month we have a couple of short walks for all the family, especially young children. These walks are from our friends at the National Trust and they have many more on their website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/walking.
The walks Box Hill Stepping Stones 1. From the visitor centre at the top of Box Hill, follow the surfaced path away from the visitor centre. Ignore the track going off to your right and continue along the surfaced path running parallel to the road and you’ll see the view opening out in front of you. 2. Once you’ve admired the view from Salomon’s Memorial, walk down the sloped path which runs below the viewpoint. Take a right and continue along this path. 3. You’ll see some steps cut into the ground on your left; follow these downhill through the Yew woods. There are 275 steps to the bottom - take care as they can be slippery sometimes. Continue along this path; on the left you’ll catch glimpses of the river Mole. 4. Continue downhill. As the path flattens you’ll reach a fork in the path. Take the left fork signed to the Stepping Stones. The River Mole and Stepping Stones are in front of you. You have a choice here. Either take a right at the rivers’ edge and follow the riverside path (you can cross the river at the bridge a little further along), or cross the Stepping Stones and follow the path running parallel to the river on the other side. 5. Once you’ve reached the footbridge, go through the gate next to it. This brings you out into a large open space. This is called Burford Meadow. Continue through the meadow. On the opposite bank of the river there are wooded chalk cliffs. These are known as the Whites. 6. At the far end of Burford Meadow there will be a road bridge in front of you. Follow the path upwards, just to the left of the bridge and you’ll come out on the pavement next to the A24. Take a
right and cross the river and walk past the hotel on your right hand side. Continue along the pavement. 7. Take the right hand path immediately after the hotel. At the fork, take the left hand grassy track and continue heading directly uphill. 8. Join the wide grassy path on the ridge of the hill. The grassy slope becomes a white chalk path, follow it uphill. 9. Take the pathway on your left. As it joins the stony path, take a right and continue as it heads uphill. 10. You’ll pass an old building on your right. This is Box Hill Fort. You can walk all around the outside but not inside as there are bats living in it. Continue up the stony track and turn right at the road to return to the visitor centre.
DISTANCE: 2 miles OS MAPS: Explorer 146, Landranger 187 STARTING POINT: National Trust Visitor Centre, The Old Fort, Box Hill Road, Tadworth, Surrey KT20 7LB Summer Star Gazing walk at Black Down 1. From the car park on Tennyson’s Lane at point 1, take the main stone surfaced track out onto Black Down (there is a second car park further up this track). Head up on the main track and through the gate, past a notice board. Continue up the track, through a gully and past a bench with day time views over the weald to the east. 2. Continue along the main path, ignoring paths to your left and right, and past some small ponds on your right at point 2. Away from the light pollution of nearby towns, Black Downs sweeping skies and unspoilt views make it an ideal spot for observing the stars. Try and spot the Milky Way, a ribbon of millions of stars, threading its way across the night sky. The light you see from a twinkling star has travelled across the universe for millions of years to reach you; so when looking at a star, you are actually looking back in time. Black Down’s prominent position in the landscape has also been used for much more over the years. A site on the hill was a key link in the chain of beacons that were designed to carry news of impending invasion to London. In daylight there are extensive views to the north here.

Box Hill Stepping Stones
3. Carry on along main path to a small grassy triangle with a birch tree, then turn left and follow this path to a bench at point 3. This is a particularly good point for star gazing, with views to the west over the Milland Bowl and beyond to the South Downs. Also listen out for nightjars here, churring on the open heath. The North Star, also known as the Pole Star or Polaris, is a very bright star and is always fixed above the north point of the horizon. It has been used for over 2,000 years to help navigators at sea and on land find their way. Until the end of grazing in the early 20th century Black Down was mostly open grazed heath. When the grazing animals left, trees began to grow and the wildlife disappeared. The heath is now being restored and grazed again and many species of wildlife are returning. 4. Head a further 65 feet (20m) or so along the main path and then turn left. Ignore the first turn to the left and then turn right at a crossroads to the Beech Hanger Woodland at point 4. Turn sharp left for the path back to the car park. 5. Take the main path back northwards towards the car park.
DISTANCE: 1.5 miles OS MAPS: Explorer 133, Landranger 186 STARTING POINT: Tennyson’s Lane car park, GU27 3BJ. Grid ref: SU921308 Apologies, but last month’s walk had incorrect details. The Hascombe-Dunsfold walk is 5.5miles and it starts at the village car park by the “TotemPole” on the green at Dunsfold, a few yards along the road from the Sun public house. The map is Explorer 134 Crawley & Horsham, Cranleigh & Billingshurst. It is correct on our website at www.vantagepointmag.co.uk.
