Call the mediator When someone has died and the content of his or her Will comes to light, it can feel to those who are grieving like a statement of the deceased’s love and affection for them. When a child, sibling, spouse or other family member is excluded from a Will, any reasoning the testator may have had for that decision is all too often lost, which can leave the disappointed beneficiary feeling resentful. When a person becomes aware that they have been excluded from, or left less than they might have expected in a Will, their feelings of inadequacy or of being unloved can appear to others to be attributable to greed. People feel guilty that they are even thinking about contesting the Will of a deceased loved one, but it is not greedy to want to feel equal to your siblings, or loved by your late spouse; nor is it unreasonable to want to investigate any suspicious circumstances surrounding the preparation and execution of a Will which seems irrational or unfair. At TWM Solicitors we are passionate advocates of mediation in order to settle the family disputes which can arise in these circumstances. We find that mediation can help to uphold relationships that would have broken down had the case gone to court. Mediation helps maintain the estate’s assets better than engaging in emotional and financially costly litigation which can cause further friction amongst beneficiaries in an already fraught situation. Mediation can also, unlike protracted litigation, stop the matter being dragged out for
longer than necessary, enabling family members to benefit more quickly from certainty and closure. Conversely, mediation can also assist when family relations have broken down to the point where members of the family really do not want to see one another any more. At mediation, parties generally sit in their own private rooms with their legal teams and the mediator ‘commutes’ between them. This means that the parties never actually meet at the mediation, and in turn ensures that there is no need to endure the uncomfortable ‘evil eyes’ that are so often seen in the court room. TWM Solicitors’ Contentious Trusts and Probate team have promoted many successful mediations, with the settlements benefiting both parties. If any of the above strikes a chord with you, or you have any queries or concerns about your own situation arising out of this article, please contact James Acres who will be happy to assist you. || YOUR LOCAL TEAM We held our first wine festival at the Farnham Maltings last month and it was a great success. With over 140 wines on offer, including a number from the local area, our visitors were spoilt for choice. Don’t take my word for it though. Kevin Rayner came with a group and sent us this email: “Just a quick note to say what a great evening we all had last night at the Farnham Maltings wine festival. All 17 of us loved it. We hope it becomes an annual event”. We also had great feedback from the charities we supported at the event. Vanessa Beech from Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care said: “I just wanted to say a huge well done on the Wine Festival this weekend. Everyone was

having a great time, especially in the Saturday evening session which was positively buzzing. We were absolutely delighted with how much money we made on the three raffles, far more than I had hoped for”. If you want to come to one of our wine festivals, our next one is in Guildford on the 12th and 13th May – more details at www.vantagepointevents.co.uk. Last month, I promised to report back on Madeira, where I went on a walking holiday. Well, 82 miles later, I can safely report that it is a great location for that sort of holiday. The people were very friendly, the organisation was excellent and the landscape quite stunning. And I lost weight – there aren’t many great holidays you can say that about! Never mind the cost of living, look at the cost of dying. Shuffling off this mortal coil just got more expensive. And it’s all down to a huge hike in probate fees. Instead of paying £215, the executors of an estate that’s worth £2 million or more will now have to cough up £20,000.

Think of the kids! Think of the probate fees!” And it’s not just estates that are worth over £2 million that are being fleeced. All but the smallest estates will have to shell out more for probate. At Cheesmans there’s nothing we can do about the cost of probate. But there’s a lot we can do while you’re still in the pink of health to minimize your estate’s exposure to taxation.
We’ll do all we can to help. We were one of the first firms of accountants to qualify to handle probate. And using us offers a big advantage over using a solicitor. Namely, lower costs. Some solicitors charge up to two per cent of an estate’s value. We don’t. We undertake probate work on time-based fees, not a percentage.
Like to talk? If you’d like to discuss probate or your estate further, we’re happy to come to your home, outside office hours, if that suits you, without any obligation on your part. Call Carol Cheesman on 0207 354 3914. Or drop us a line at probate@cheesman.co.uk As we said, we can’t do anything about the price of probate but we can do a lot to keep your other costs in check.

MOTORING ||
Thinking of buying a new
SUV?
Sports Utility Vehicle sales are booming. It's easy to see why, given their lofty height offering a commanding view over the top of lesser motors, together with perceptions of improved safety and grip, say Andy Goundry. Prestige brand manufacturers seem to have capitalised on this booming market by pushing prices ever higher. Typically, a Range Rover can now easily cost well over £100,000. Surprisingly, in these increasingly diesel-discriminatory days, many prestige models are either only available with diesel engines, or confine petrol power to higher-priced versions. For example, whilst Range Rover Evoque prices start from £30,600, the cheapest petrol version is significantly more at £44,100. However, if prestige brand prices don’t appeal to you, plenty of other excellent SUV models are available offering much more for your money whilst still providing similar if not better levels of performance and quality. Some are very low-priced, such as the Dacia Duster whose prices start from only £9,495. Incredible value for money, but beware that the basic specification is exactly that: by the time a few options such as air-con are added the price can increase quickly. A better choice may be the Korean SsangYong Tivoli: not a model of which many people are aware, but well worth considering as its starting price of £12,950 includes such goodies as a five year warranty, air conditioning and cruise control. Volkswagen Group offer some impressive SUVs in the midprice range. The group, including VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi and indeed Porsche, have succeeded in offering a wide range of SUVs catering for all budgets and tastes, thanks to extensive component-sharing between their brands. In fact, this sharing extends to the sites where the SUVs are manufactured. Audi Q3s, definitely one of today’s premium SUVs, are built at a Seat factory in Spain, whilst a Skoda factory is home to the Audi Q5. Typical of this commonality is the Volkswagen Tiguan. With levels of quality as good as any of the prestige brands, the mid-sized Tiguan is available in a wide range of versions and prices, from an effective 1.4-litre petrol starting at a reasonable £23,140 up to a mighty 240PS / 500Nm diesel. I tried a Tiguan in extremely well-specified SEL form, which features Volkswagen’s 4 Motion four-wheel-drive system along with lots of useful equipment. The standard specification includes a an 8” touchscreen navigation system, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, a 12.3” customisable dash display screen, and parking sensors front and rear, all topped off with a panoramic, opening sunroof. And all for a starting

price of £31,170, almost identical to the base model Range Rover Evoque, which lacks most of those features and is only 2-wheel-drive. Despite the SEL’s already comprehensive specification, Volkswagen had equipped the test car with just about every option in the book, resulting in an on-the-road price of around £40,000. Not cheap, however kitting an Evoque to a similar level would set you back closer to £55,000. To us, the Tiguan seemed more spacious and smooth-riding than the Evoque, and quality levels of interior trim felt similar. One feature

likely to appeal to caravanners and others is an impressive 2,500kg towing capacity, only 200kg less than the much bigger and more expensive Volvo XC90 and much greater than the 1,800kg of the Evoque. When the optional trailer reversing system is specified, the Tiguan should make a superb tow car. On the safety front the Tiguan scores highly, having recently been nominated as ‘Best Small SUV’ by Euro NCAP, the organisation responsible for assessing European car safety standards. Currently available with 5 seats, a 7-seat version of the Tiguan is also expected soon. In the meantime, seven seats are already offered by the newlylaunched and slightly larger Skoda Kodiaq. Sharing most of the Tiguan’s engine and transmission options, the Kodiaq range is a little cheaper and even more extensive. For example, for a driver who needs to venture off-road regularly, the Kodiaq Scout version offers rugged bodywork, with plastic panels protecting the lower sections of bodywork together, with a raised ride height and 4-wheel-drive in all models. Prices for the Kodiaq range start from a very reasonable £21,495 for the 1.4 petrol S model. Even a top-of-the range 2 litre 180PS petrol ‘Edition’ model at £33,545 comfortably undercuts an equivalent Land Rover Discovery Sport, one of the few other 7-seat SUVs in this size, and which is presently unavailable with a petrol engine. Last but certainly not least within the Volkswagen Group SUV line-up is the smaller Seat Ateca, starting at £17,990. This Spanish-built SUV has only been on sale for a few months, yet has deservedly already garnered many awards, including What Car’s ‘Best Small SUV of 2017’.
The Ateca is again available with a wide range of engine and gearbox options, ranging from an economical 1.0 litre petrol engine with 6-speed manual transmission and 2-wheeldrive, up to a 190hp 7-speed auto with 4-wheel drive. Our test car was a 1.4 litre Eco TSI 150PS petrol, 2-wheel-drive manual gearbox version, a specification likely to be the choice for many families. Emissions and fuel consumption are impressive, with only 123g/km of CO2 and a claimed combined fuel consumption of 52.3mpg. The top of the range ‘Excellence’ model with this engine retails at £24,440, although equipment levels of some of the lower specification models are almost as good and usefully cheaper. The days of Seats being of humdrum quality are long gone. Closing the doors gives a reassuring

Ride, on the optional 19” wheels fitted, was perhaps a little on the firm side, although still soft enough to cushion the passengers from the worst of our dreadful road surfaces very effectively. Roll, often the bugbear of similar tall SUVs was well-controlled, and overall the ride and handling package was well-judged.
‘thunk’ of solidity. Indeed, anyone used to the premium feel of a Golf will be instantly at home inside the Ateca, for trim materials and finishes are of excellent quality, tactile soft-feel materials being used almost everywhere. The interior offers plenty of room for passengers, and not at the expense of luggage space either, for the Ateca’s boot offers 510 litres of space, usefully more than most family hatchbacks. All four doors open wide, making for very easy entry and exit to all the seats. Once aboard, legroom is generous as well. All this within compact external dimensions – at 4363mm long it’s only just over 100mm longer than a Golf, and only 40mm wider.
As with the Tiguan and Kodiaq, safety is given a high priority. Front Assist and City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Protection are standard on all models, constantly scanning the road ahead for collision risks, sounding warnings and triggering emergency braking if need be. Additional safety features can be specified including Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning. The awards and praise are well-deserved for this excellent family-friendly motor, especially at a price point which undercuts most of the opposition by some margin, together with a class-leading residual value after 3 years of up to 50% according to CAP experts. As alternatives, then, to the likes of Range Rover, BMW and Mercedes, the SUV models from Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen make a lot of sense. Try them before you buy that Evoque, X3 or Q5 – you might be pleasantly surprised. Image from top left: Tiguan's Head Up Display – an incredibly useful option; Kodiaq’s upmarket cabin.
One of the highlights of driving the Ateca was its smoothness and extremely low noise levels. Performance from the 1.4 litre engine was entirely adequate, thanks to the diesel-rivalling 250Nm of torque on tap from only 1500 RPM.

Extraordinary changes are underway at
RHS Garden Wisley For more than 200 years, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has been the force behind the nation’s love of gardening, backed up by its core vision to ‘enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place’. A shining example of this is the charity’s flagship garden, RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, which is one of the UK’s most visited and best-loved gardens. As both a hub of horticultural excellence and a top visitor attraction, the popularity of the garden has grown substantially over the past decade, with visits increasing from 750,000 to over one million per year. Growing Wisley for Everyone Recognising the increasing popularity and horticultural significance of Wisley, the RHS made a commitment to enhance its future and secure its position as a centre for excellence through its Strategic Investment Programme. As part of this commitment, some extraordinary plans are now in place at RHS Garden Wisley. These include the development of a new welcome building and bustling ‘village square’, revitalising the historic science laboratory, and creating a new dedicated Centre for Horticultural Science & Learning. 14
Head of RHS Garden Wisley, Stephanie Fudge said: “We are thrilled to be able to share the vision for RHS Garden Wisley with our visitors as it sets a clear way forward for us to enhance our reputation as one of the most horticulturally-significant and welcoming gardens in the world. The developments at Wisley will enhance the facilities available, and enable visitors to experience world-class horticultural delights, advice and research findings.” New Welcome Building In the stylish new entrance and courtyard, visitors can meet up with friends and family before enjoying the garden. A range of enhanced facilities will be included, such as a new shop, café, plant centre, and membership area. Once visitors have entered the garden, there will be a new restaurant and an enticing village square. The square will also include dedicated space for specialist nurseries to promote plants and share expert advice through

the garden’s regular flower shows, demonstrations and temporary displays. The Laboratory Reborn By following the entry path, visitors will be greeted by a new vista of the iconic Arts and Crafts-style science Laboratory building and the gently-steeped lawns that will be in keeping with the building’s elegance and academic heritage. Additionally, following the enhancements to the interior of the laboratory, it will be open to the public for the first time in over 100 years. Visitors will be able to step back in time and explore where and how scientists pioneered horticultural research, and where generations of students have learned their profession. The remarkable building will become a hub for visitors to learn about the history of the RHS and discover many of the gardening and botanical heritage treasures from the historical library and collections held at Wisley. New Centre for Horticultural Science & Learning RHS Garden Wisley has been home to RHS science and the School of Horticulture since 1904 but the current facilities require improvement to ensure modern scientific research and learning can flourish. The new Centre for Horticultural Science & Learning will be a state-of-the-art building that will inspire excellence in horticultural science and learning, enabling scientists and researchers to address some of the key horticultural challenges of the 21st century, and to share this expertise across the globe. The building will contain laboratories, exhibition space, teaching studios, and facilities for the charity’s nationally important Herbarium, science and library collections. This move will also open the extensive collections and research to the public, providing improved access to expertise and knowledge to allow for ‘better gardening’ for everyone. Additionally, the new centre of excellence will be surrounded by three beautiful educational gardens where visitors will

The garden will be an intriguing educational hub in natural history and in environmental sensitivity, to show just how beautiful a wild garden can be. Timeline of Activity The exciting programme of developments is now underway at RHS Garden Wisley and the staggered schedule of work has commenced. The first of the changes sees the Wisley Garden Library reopening in Gardiner’s House from 10th April 2017, and improvements to some paths around the garden are now being made. The new Welcome Building and surrounding area is set to open in summer 2018, and the Centre for Horticultural Science & Learning is due to be completed by summer 2020. Watch this Space This spring, visitors will be able to see the planned improvements for RHS Garden Wisley in a new behind-the-scenes exhibition on Seven Acres. Let’s Take a Walk on the Wildside!
A beginners guide to wildlife photography by Dani Maimone
My passion for wildlife began many years ago as a small child when I used to collect newts and lizards to take home to my mother, who was a little less enthusiastic about my collecting habit. It progressed from there into studying zoology as a degree after a spell of living and flying balloons over Kenya’s Masai Mara game reserve in East Africa. It was there that my love of wildlife photography began but there’s plenty to photograph inKenya and much of it’s easy to spot. Surrey’s wildlife is bit less obvious and not quite so easy to get up-closeand-personal with but there’s plenty of it out there if you know where to look. I’m by no means an expert but I do have a few useful tips to pass on. It’s not necessary to have the most expensive kit and longest lenses to get the best shots. Whilst May 2017
it’s possible to get some good results with a mobile phone or a compact camera, you definitely achieve better quality with a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera). For a start, you have much more control over several vital factors, ISO, shutter speed and aperture, the photography triangle. It’s getting all of these elements right that help make a great picture, well that and the subject matter, composition, focus, light, colours, etc. I use a Nikon D7100 with a variety of lenses, such as a 70mm-300mm for photographing birds, a macro lens for close up pictures of flowers, insects and other small beasts and an 18mm-140mm for any landscape work. There’s usually an option for the macro setting on all compact and DSLRs in the form of a flower symbol on your menu screen. Other useful items are a tripod and a pair of binoculars plus a good quality camera bag to carry everything around in, preferably something weatherproof. A tripod is pretty important for macro and landscape photography to help avoid camera shake and give you sharper images. If you don’t have a tripod, see

batteries but where can you find some great wildlife to photograph in Surrey? In case you didn’t know Surrey is the most wooded county in the UK and has a wealth of nationally important species, some of it in your own garden or back yard. Gardens are a good starting point and a great place to practise. The right plants and food can entice a variety of birds and other creatures into your garden including bumble bees, butterflies, beetles, foxes and more. Learning a bit about your subject matter and its behaviour can really help you to get ‘the shot.’
if you can find something nearby to steady your camera on such as a fencepost, branch, rock or wall. Make sure your subject is in focus and the exposure is correct; better still use a continuous shoot mode. Many cameras these days have this option and can shoot up to 6 frames a second, this is especially useful for wildlife photography and capturing moving subjects. Make sure you check your camera’s focus settings. There are many tutorials available about all the basics and essentials of whatever make and model your camera is and its capabilities on YouTube, which is brilliant if like me, you hate reading manuals. So you know how all your kit works, you’re dressed appropriately for a day outdoors, you’ve remembered your memory cards and your spare 26
Surrey Wildlife Trust www.surreywildifetrust.org manages 80 nature reserves around the county, perfect venues for taking your camera and capturing some wonderful photos. The river Wey is also a great place to find an assortment of bird life, from swans to kingfishers, ducks, coots, geese and a host of damselflies and dragonflies. Another excellent location is Bushy Park, located next to Hampton Court Palace. It’s the perfect venue for a day out with plenty of red deer who are fairly tame but don’t get too close to the stags during the mating season or the rut from early September to November. Remember they are wild animals and respect their space. The best time of day for photographing wildlife is often what photographers refer to as the ‘Golden Hour,’ that time of day just after sunrise or an hour before sunset when the light is at it’s best. Wildlife photography is a great hobby to get your kids involved with and an excellent way of teaching them about the natural world. It’s also fabulous to be so close to nature. So charge up your batteries, fire up your gear and get snapping! THE AUTHOR Dani is a freelance writer and photographer with a passion for wildlife, and she loves hopping into hot air balloons whenever the opportunity arises. You can follow Dani on Twitter and Instagram as @MamaBalloon or check out her website at www.danipics.com or find her in facebook as Dani Maimone Photography.

Conservatory Sails Sail Blinds are the exciting new way to shade your conservatory. They control heat and glare and work with any shape of roof or construction type.
enjoy your conservatory more than ever before, enjoying all of the benefits of a glazed roof without suffering from excessive heat on all of those beautiful sunny days.
They were developed specifically for UK conservatories to tackle some of the issues associated with traditional pleated blinds. The specially designed sail uses a high performance fabric to control the heat without having to cover all of the roof. Allowing you to enjoy all of the benefits of the view and sun without the excessive heat. The breathable fabric and robust flexible construction means you don’t have to look at the dead flies trapped in your pleated blinds because you can simply shake them off and then when you want to remove any dust or dirt you can wash them in your machine at 30 degrees.
Paul Baglin at InShade says “customers are always amazed by the transformation, they feel an instant impact on the heat as soon as the sails are put up. Once they see the sunlight filtering through the sails they love the way they look and make the space feel. Then later when it’s needed they really appreciate how easy they are to clean”.
Creative Blinds and Shutters have been a leading supplier of Blinds and Shutters for over 20 years, and when Richard Teague owner of Creative Blinds and Shutters saw InShade Conservatory sails blinds at the British Blinds and Shutters Association trade show he instantly recognised the benefits. For the first time ever you have a solution that not only controls the heat but also truly enhances the conservatory and the time you spend in it. Unique within the blinds industry the design led process is tailored to how you want to use your conservatory to ensure that you get the best possible solution to suit the way you want to use the space. The whole process works because InShade conservatory sail blinds are made from a unique solar control fabric. The ISX fabric is 100% UK made and provides the ultimate in heat control, solar efficiency and has been proven to be durable in even the most extreme temperatures. This is important because the air temperature inside the roof of your conservatory often reaches more than 70 degrees centigrade when the roof vents are closed. So with the most effective heat control available you can 28

Improved allowances on Investments and Inheritance Tax for this new tax year The new tax year, which began on 6th April brings new and improved allowances on investments such as ISAs; as well as increased allowances against Inheritance Tax. Increased ISA allowance From 6th April, ISA allowances will increase to £20,000 and for Junior ISAs it will be £4,128. This means that married couples/civil partners can now invest combined up to £40,000 per year into cash or Investment ISAs or be split between the two. New Lifetime ISAs
5. Your LISA can be put into savings or stocks and shares: the longer you’re likely to keep it, the more you should consider share-type investments. The final value of your LISA will depend on your choice of investments.* ‘Inheritable’ ISA improvements
A new Lifetime ISA (LISA) was launched April 2017 and will be very attractive for first-time home buyers and those saving for a tax-free retirement income.
ISAs can now be ‘inherited’ after the holder’s death. New legislation which started April 2017 means all the income and growth of assets inside the ISA will remain exempt from tax during the probate period of transferring them to the new owner.
LISA need–to-knows:
Higher allowances from Inheritance Tax (IHT)
1. You must be aged 18 or over but under 40 to open one.
From 6th April 2017 the IHT threshold for those who pass on immediately a family home as part of their estate, to their children (including adopted, foster and stepchildren) or grandchildren, will increase up to £500,000 by 2020. Married couples/civil partners will now be able to pass on assets worth up to £1m completely free of IHT from April 2020.
2. Save up to a maximum £4,000 a year into a LISA, and the government will add a 25% bonus at end of each tax year. The bonus is paid annually in the 2017/18 tax year and then monthly from April 2018 until you’re 50 therefore the maximum bonus you could receive is up to £32,000. 3. Your LISA must be used either towards the purchase of a first home worth under £450,000 or towards a tax-free retirement fund after the age of 60. 4. The LISA is an individual product – couples can have one each.
The new 'family home allowance' is set initially at £100,000 from April 2017 and then rising by £25,000 per annum to the maximum of £175,000 by 2020. It is per person, who must be a homeowner, and will be added to the current IHT threshold of £325,000 each. Therefore, the spouse can still inherit any unused IHT allowance meaning that they can pass on up to £1,000,000 free from Inheritance Tax.
* The value of investments and income from them may go down. You may not get back the original amount invested and the levels, basis and reliefs of taxation are subject to change. Life on the Wey and Godalming Navigations The Wey Navigations is one of the earliest navigable waterways in the country, running from Godalming down to Weybridge, and dating from 1653. Since 1964 it has been owned and operated by the National Trust. One of six lengthsmen, Robert Craig, looks after the length between Guildford and Shalford.
It was a relatively dry start to 2017. This meant fewer weir operations which allowed me to focus on the annual winter cut back of the towpath vegetation. Cutting back the riverbank vegetation enables me to identify any areas that require repair and also makes way for the fresh growth in the spring. One job that kept me warm during December and January was cutting back and removing the ivy growing on a section of wall by Langton Priory in Guildford. The ivy was encroaching on the towpath and its removal not only widened the towpath,
32
but revealed the beautiful local Bargate stone of the wall. I was helped with this task by our Wey Navigation Conservation Volunteers, which meant that we were able to get a lot done. In contrast to January, February’s weather was something of a mixed bag, which meant more weir keeping. We also experienced some very strong winds. I always inspect my length of the navigation looking for any fallen or damaged trees after such an event. I had to clear an alder tree which had floated down and speared my weir. Although I was able to clear most of the smaller debris and secure the tree away from the weir gates, our floating excavator was fortunately working in Guildford at the time and was able to come and lift it out for me. The icy weather towards the end of the month meant that the ground became too hard for me to carry out some of the bank repairs along the towpath. There were plenty of other things that I could get on with though; at Stonebridge wharf in Shalford there were still plenty of fallen leaves to be cleared and moss to be scraped off the staging on the moorings. It was whilst working at Stonebridge in February that I had my first indication that spring was on its way in the form of a peacock butterfly sighting. To round off the month, it was back to vegetation cutting and clearing prior to the beginning of the nesting season.

For sixteen days in June Surrey artists will be welcoming the public into their studios for the annual Surrey Artists’ Open Studios (SAOS) event taking place in artist’s studios right across the county. There will be over 148 studios open across the 16 days. As well as a chance to meet and talk to artists in their place of work, the summer open studios event offers visitors the opportunity to view demonstrations, buy artwork, enter a free prize draw and even get involved in creative workshops. Studio locations are throughout Surrey and its borders. For the first time this year, Saturday 3rd June will see artists offering an array of activities exclusively to visitors on the first day of this popular countywide event.
“This unique event offers an exciting opportunity to meet artists and makers in Surrey, to hear about and see first-hand their practice and to admire their work,” says Jane McGibbon coordinator of SAOS. “The artists taking part also offer ample opportunity to take part in workshops, and to meet fellow enthusiasts en route. Whatever your interest, painting, printmaking, glass, ceramics, textiles, jewellery or sculpture, SAOS is a brilliant opportunity to discover creative people who live and work in Surrey.” Some artists offer trails that help you to plan a full day out; just ask for details when you visit a studio, or check out the advertised trails on the SAOS website. In 2016 over 16,000 people visited the studios of Surrey artists making this a highlight of the cultural year in the county. www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk

With Beth Otway
In praise of pumpkins

The weather in May can take us by surprise - we might be basking in the heat of the sun, or we are equally as likely to be jolted, shocked and stopped in our tracks, as we turn to grab our coats to protect us during periods of rather bleak, chilly weather. It's the same for our plants. They won't enjoy a check in their growth if inclement weather strikes, so take care to protect any tender plants in your care this month. Whatever the weather, summer isn't far away. There's a wide range of seeds you can sow this month in your garden or at your allotment. Swede 'Magres' is a fully hardy variety of swede, which can be sown outside directly in the soil where it is to grow now. 'Magres' offers good mildew resistance, and produces tasty, purple topped, yellowfleshed swedes. There are many wonderful varieties of beetroot that you can sow directly in the soil outside now. 'Chioggia' is a wonderful beetroot. When you slice it in half you'll be greeted with pretty concentric circles of pink and white beetroot flesh. 'Burpees May 2017
Golden', and 'Touchstone Gold' are lovely, yellow beetroot varieties, and 'White Detroit', 'Albino', and 'Albina Verduna' are beautiful, white varieties of beetroot. Pumpkins are so much fun to grow! You can sow pumpkin and squash seeds in a greenhouse, on your windowsill, or outside but with protection from the elements. Pumpkins aren't fond of cold weather - they won't tolerate frost. So do ensure you wait for warm weather conditions, and harden your plants off, by gently acclimatising them to life outdoors during the daytime, and then bringing your plants back undercover for extra protection at night for two weeks or so prior to planting outside. Remember to protect your seedlings if cold weather is forecast. Pumpkin and squash seeds germinate readily in the warmth. Sow each pumpkin seed on its side or vertically - this will help water to run off and prevent the seed from rotting if it doesn't germinate right away. Pumpkin and squash plants resent having their roots disturbed, so if you're sowing your seeds in pots prior to planting in the soil outside, ensure your containers are large enough to contain the seedlings, and their roots, until you're able to plant

Larger fruited varieties of pumpkin and squash require more space and will happily and rapidly advance onwards, taking over a vast area of ground in very little time. The minimum space you should offer each pumpkin is 6ft by 6ft; more would be far better, but any less would be unkind, as these cucurbits don't grow well when faced with competition. Pumpkins hate windy weather, so choose a sheltered spot, or if you garden on an exposed site, create a windbreak to protect your plants. Jerusalem artichokes grow to be tall plants, which provide a good windbreak, or you could make your own shelter using some fine mesh or netting if you prefer.

them outside - these are quickgrowing plants which need more room than you might expect at every stage of growth. Pumpkins and squashes don't grow well in areas of compacted soil, so take time to dig your soil over and loosen any compaction. Double-digging would be ideal, but you could find an alternative planting space where the soil isn't compacted and doesn't Beetroot 'Chioggia' require digging if you prefer. Pumpkins and squash plants thrive in raised beds, but the plants will also take over these precious growing areas and any nearby ground very rapidly. When planting out your pumpkin plants, or when sowing your seed directly in the soil, make a wide, shallow well in the soil for each pumpkin plant or seed you sow. The well doesn't need to be deep; just enough of a dip in the ground to provide some shelter for your pumpkin, and to provide a collection point for water when it rains, or when you water your plants. Pumpkin plants can be surprisingly versatile and accommodating. Most of the varieties that produce small fruits, for example 'Munchkin', 'Jack Be Little', and 'Baby Boo', will happily scramble up tepees, arches, or homemade supports, where they create a beautiful and atmospheric sight as their fruits ripen in autumn. But do ensure that your pumpkin supports are strong and braced accordingly, in order to be sturdy enough to support the full weight of your growing plants and their harvest of pumpkins. You don't need to grow these smaller pumpkin plants as climbers - they will happily scramble over the ground. 40
One place that pumpkins will be very happy to be planted is on top of your compost heap - the warmth from the decomposing vegetable and plant matter below will aid and comfort your plants no end resulting in earlier fruit production. Consequently, the compost heap is an ideal place to sow seeds of your largest pumpkin varieties; this is the place to try to break the record for the largest pumpkin at your local show. You might opt for the readily available Pumpkin 'Atlantic Giant', or you might decide to spend a little more money on a few special, giant pumpkin seeds from a champion grower, the choice is yours! Ideally your compost heap won't be overflowing and your plant waste and vegetable matter won't have yet reached the top of your compost heap, so that your pumpkin plants will have some shelter and protection from the surrounding wood, pallets, or whatever your compost heap is constructed or reined in by. Then tip a bucket or two of good-quality compost on top of your compost heap, make a shallow well to sow your seed directly into, or plant your pumpkin seedling into this compost if you've already started your plants off indoors. I love growing pumpkins, I am sure you will too. Good luck! Sunfower Seed Plait
Ingredients: 200g wholemeal flour 175g strong white bread flour 7g salt 7g sachet of dry yeast, or 12g fresh yeast 250g room temperature water 20g soft butter 100g toasted sunflower seeds Serves 4-6
Method: 1. Weigh your two flours and salt into a large bowl. Weigh the water into a jug. If you are using fresh yeast you'll need to dissolve it into the water before moving on to step 2. If you are using dry yeast, pop it into the flour bowl 2. Pour the liquid into the bowl and mix everything together until it comes together into a dough, turn it out onto the table 3. Knead the dough on a clean table for 8 minutes, without adding flour. After this time spread the dough out across the table and sprinkle over 75g of your toasted seeds. Continue kneading for a couple of minutes until the seeds are evenly dispersed throughout. 4. Shape the dough into a ball, using a light dusting of flour, and place it back into the bowl. Dust again, cover with a clean cloth, and leave to rest at room temperature for 60 minutes May 2017
5. When your dough has puffed up nicely, dust the table with a little flour and turn the dough out onto it. Flatten the dough slightly and cut it into three pieces. Roll each piece up into a sausage, about 40cm long. To make the plait, bring the three tips together. Fold the left sausage over the middle, then fold the right sausage over the new middle one. Continue all the way to the end of the loaf and pinch the ends together 6 Brush your plaited loaf all over with water, and sprinkle over the remaining 25g of seeds so they stick. Transfer the loaf to a parchment lined tray. Allow 30-45 minutes for your shaped dough to prove up under a cloth. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 190°C fan/gas mark 7. 7. Slide the tray with the loaf on into the oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack.

Grilled Asparagus and Ricotta Bruschetta This is an easy recipe using the pumpkin seed bread on the previous page. It uses lovely English asparagus which is now available to purchase in the shops - grab it while you can!
Ingredients: 10 aparagus spears 30g broad beans A handful of rocket leaves 150g ricotta A few sprigs of mint 1lemon 7 or 8 toasted almonds 1 garlic clove 3tbsp olive oil 1tsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp caster sugar 2 slices of pumpkin seed bread (recipe overleaf) Serves 2

Grill the asparagus spears on a high heat until charred on all sides, season with salt and pepper as it grills. Remove from the pan and place in a large bowl to cool 4. While the asparagus cools, you can make your lemon dressing by whisking together 1tsp Dijon 44
mustard, 1/2 tsp sugar, the juice of half a lemon and a pinch of salt. Slowly add 3tbsp of olive oil while whisking to emulsify 5. Pop your broad beans out of their skins and add them to the bowl with the cooled asparagus. Add the rocket, crush your almonds and add them too. Dress everything nicely with your lemon dressing. 6. Newlands Corner to East Clandon This walk, through woods and fields, has some long but not very steep ups and downs. It starts at Newlands Corner which follows the trend of our recent walks by having yet another magnificent view. Be warned that Surrey County Council is soon to start charging people to park at Newlands Corner. We are told that this charge will cover the management of the site as well as improvements to the existing facilities. The walk description is provided by Guildford Rambling Club (guildfordramblingclub.org.uk).
The walk 1. Take the track running down past the righthand side of the toilet block which is behind the cafĂŠ. Ignore an immediate left and an unsigned right. Immediately reach a post and turn right at a bend and then go right again, off the track. Ignore an immediate unsigned left. At a T-junction take a bridleway left and then fork right. Pass an amazing old yew tree. At a T-junction go right and immediately left. At a yellow arrow turn left. Quickly reach a T-junction with a wide track and turn right. Ignore rights and lefts for about 250 yards then take a path right that has a grassy entrance and climbs a little. 2. At a tiny cross paths go straight on. At a T-junction turn left. Pass the fourth tee of Merrow Golf Course. Fork right (where left would take you closer to the course) and continue to reach Todds Lane. Cross, go left for 50 yards and take an unsigned path right with the course on your right-hand side and trees on the left-hand. Very quickly follow a yellow arrow forking left and almost immediately follow an arrow

left past a 3-post barrier and into trees. Now follow yellow arrows, left alongside a split paling fence and around the edge of the course. Reach a line of houses and follow the path right and still alongside the fence. Ignore a gap through to the houses. A little further on the path forks off left and into trees then follows a wire fence and finally emerges on an access road by the cricket club, a gym and tennis courts. 3. Follow the road right, down to the main road. Cross and take the footpath right, at the far side of the ornate entrance gates to Clandon Park. Head straight out across fields, initially on a narrow tarmac path and soon forking left at a 2-way signpost. Walk along by a fence and follow a yellow arrow right at the first corner. Again follow arrows along a track, across another track, along the outside edge of a field and on to another cross track, straight over and half-left across a field to trees. Pass a pond. Cross two footbridges and continue on. Reach a T-junction with a wide vehicle track.

Turn left. Walk past the club house. Reach a bend where the road swings left and some signposts point left and there is a sign saying ‘to the car park’. Here turn right (unsigned) to cross a tiny footbridge on which there is a sign warning that the public footpath is about to cross the course. Walk straight out across the fairway to continue along a wide grassy track through trees. 5. Continue straight on past a 2-way signpost with a broken finger. Walk along the left-hand edge of a fairway. At the eighth tee, follow signposts forking left. Again walk along the left-hand edge of a fairway. After 150 yards the path forks left into the tree line. Reach a house and a T-junction with a road. Turn right and, ignoring an immediate footpath right, walk to another T-junction with a road. The Queens Head pub and the church are to your left. You could picnic in the churchyard. 6. After lunch, with your back to the church, go to the right along the road. Just before the A25, turn left into a section of dead end road. Exit its far end to cross the A25 into Blakes Lane. Follow this left for some ½ mile, passing some farm buildings. Turn right and walk up a track that climbs to a house at the end of a road. Follow this road over a rise and down to some houses at Hook Wood. Here, take a path off to the right and follow it through for over ½ mile to another road. Turn right and walk along this for 500 yards to reach a footpath left, starting by a concrete bowl sunk into the ground at the side
of the road. This footpath wends its way through trees and soon reaches another road. Go straight across, through a small car park and then continue straight on for 1¾ miles to reach Newlands Corner.

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care
difficult they will become for people. When death is discussed openly, it becomes easier for everyone involved to help patients have the death they want, in the place of their choice – whether that is at our hospice, in a care home, or in their own homes.”
Although it’s something which will happen to us all one day, death is a subject which is often skirted around in conversation. It’s hard to deal with because we don’t like to think about the death of a loved one, or indeed face the end of our own lives. But not talking about death won’t make it go away, and indeed the more we discuss this thorny subject, the easier it becomes to face and accept it. And from 8th to 14th May, organisations across the UK, including local Hospice Care charity Phyllis Tuckwell, will come together to help us do just that - in Dying Matters Awareness Week. Dying Matters is a coalition of organisations which was set up by the National Council for Palliative Care to promote awareness of dying, death and bereavement, and to help people talk more openly about these matters. Its members include the NHS, hospices, care homes, charities, social care groups, community and faith organisations, schools and colleges, and funeral directors. Phyllis Tuckwell is a Hospice Care charity which supports patients and families in West Surrey and North East Hampshire, who are living with a terminal illness such as cancer. “We are keen to support conversations around death and bereavement,” says Sarah Brocklebank, Chief Executive at Phyllis Tuckwell, “because dying really does matter. The more we can encourage our patients and their families to have these difficult conversations, the less
May 2017
“We would like to see a society where dying, death and bereavement are seen and accepted as a natural part of everybody’s life cycle,” continues Ms Brocklebank. “By discussing these matters more openly, we can help people to access the range of support and care services which are available to them, and at an earlier stage in their illness. We can also help to dispel some of the misconceptions people have of hospices being gloomy buildings lined with beds, and reinforce that most of our care, 85%, is given outside of our in-patient unit, delivered in the community - in either patients’ own homes, care homes, or day centres. Our support is all about enabling people to have the best quality of life, with the people they love, in the time which they have left.” Phyllis Tuckwell supports over 250 patients, relatives and carers every day - in their own homes, in the community, at the hospice in Farnham and at the Beacon Centre in Guildford. It provides all of its services free of charge, and has to raise over £20,000 a day to be able to do this. As well as offering medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support to patients and families before death, it also cares for the relatives of its patients after death, offering one-to-one and group bereavement support. Every Tuesday it runs an Open House session from 2pm to 4pm at the Hospice in Farnham, where anyone who wants to can come along to find out more about the care which it offers. Everyone is welcome and there is no need to let them know that you are coming – just drop in. FIND OUT MORE For more information, please visit the website at www.pth.org.uk or telephone 01252 729400.
