Why are Lasting Powers of Attorney so important? This month, local expert Daniel Church from TWM Solicitors provides an introduction to Lasting Powers of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which enables you to decide who you trust to make decisions about your finances, property or healthcare, in the event you are no longer able to do so, and appoint them as your Attorney. Age-related issues such as dementia are often the reason that people are no longer able to make such decisions. However, an event such as an accident or illness could also have this impact. Without an LPA (or a valid Enduring Power of Attorney, which was the precursor to LPAs), those closest to you could be faced with an application to the Court of Protection to give them authority to act on your behalf with regards to finances and, less commonly, in relation to health and welfare, as a court appointed Deputy. The application process for being appointed as Deputy can be drawn out and the costs are higher. Most importantly, however, the choice of who to appoint to act in your best interests rests with the Court based on the evidence provided to it, not with you. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA covers decisions your Attorney may need to make concerning your property and finances. This includes the more mundane matters such as managing your bank

account, but also includes significant decisions, for example, selling your home and investing the proceeds for your use and benefit, in the event you need care in a residential setting. Under a Health and Welfare LPA, unless you add restrictions, your Attorney will have authority to make all personal welfare decisions on your behalf, save for: - Life sustaining treatment, unless you have expressly authorised this; and - Where you subsequently make an Advance Decision (Living Will) to refuse treatment. These decisions can only be made on your behalf if you lack the capacity to make these decisions yourself. A specialist solicitor will be able to help you with structuring and drafting your LPAs, and will manage the process of registering the LPAs with the Office of the Public Guardian. As the specialist solicitors at TWM regularly assist with the ongoing running of LPAs, we understand how LPAs should be drafted to ensure the smoothest running of these if they need to be implemented. For example, there are several powers which are very useful for Attorneys to have when operating an LPA, but which are not included by the general law. We can advise on including these in your LPAs.

Exceptional, inspired and motivated Staff Teams make all the difference to the quality of care delivered by Beritaz - Employer of Choice Beritaz Care aims for a high performance culture in all its homes and achieves it through increased staff engagement and participation. When recruiting, Beritaz ensures that all new recruits share their core values of Caring, Trusting and Choices. The Employer of Choice initiative ensures that Beritaz is the first choice for those looking to develop a career in the care sector. No fewer than five of the current Beritaz Managers have been developed and appointed from within the group. All home managers, their assistants, deputies and senior staff have attended a tailored leadership development programme and learned a variety of leadership techniques including different styles of management, coaching skills and so on. Following on from this they work with every member of their team to show each employee how and where they can progress should they wish to do so with a clear development framework. This process also ensures that we identify rising stars

speedily and they are provided with appropriate support to nurture and develop them further and retain them within the organisation. Residents and their loved ones can be assured that they are being cared for by warm, compassionate employees who will always go the extra mile. The Surrey Care Awards are the Oscars of the Care Industry; many nominations are submitted from care providers in Surrey and there is fierce competition to be shortlisted for the finals. In 2016’s awards Beritaz Care submitted two nominations and had two finalists - Ashton Manor Nursing Home for Care Team of the Year Award and Carla DixonPeart also of Ashton Manor for Manager of the Year. We were thrilled that Carla was named Manager of the Year 2016 at the Awards for her outstanding performance (see the celebratory image from the awards ceremony). The judges noted that under her leadership, her passion for the residents’ care meant that Ashton Manor was a place of sunshine and laughter. Nominations for 2017’s Surrey Care Awards have just closed and Beritaz homes are hoping that their two nominations will be shortlisted for this year’s awards taking place mid-November. ADVERTORIAL

• THE EDITOR'S NOTE I’m really pleased with this month’s lead article because we really have ‘discovered’ a hidden gem. I was introduced to Bill Biddell and the Hampton Estate by Peter Martin, Chairman of Surrey County Council. He took me along to meet Bill and his lovely wife Bridget and following tea and cake, we were given a tour of the estate, including a visit to the amazing new hop drying (oast) facility that is being built. I immediately knew we had a number of interesting stories to tell about this fascinating local business, which recently won an award for growing the best Fuggle hops in the UK. A few weeks later, I went along to their Beef Collection Day which is usually the last Friday of the month. The idea is to pre-order your meat and then go along and collect it and enjoy a cup of coffee and yet more cake. How wonderfully civilised! Incidentally, Bill is both charming and terribly modest. Alongside running the family estate, he is Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey and Chairman of the Surrey County Agricultural Society, which runs the Surrey County Show. It also put on the Surrey Game and Country Fair, which took place in September at Loseley, near Guildford. I went along for the first time this year and it was a real treat. Plenty to see and to do, attracting people of all ages. It seemed that having a dog was obligatory, so Humphrey was in his element and had to be dragged away. Incidentally, there was a stand selling the best pork scratchings ever – yet another reason to visit!

As I write this, in early October, the shops are already full of mince pies and festive fare. Pubs and restaurants are publishing their Christmas menus and I even saw my first advert with reference to that dreadful phrase, the 'gifting' period, which of course means Christmas. It won't be long before we start to see hot cross buns and then we know spring is on its way...

Dreaming of that powder day? Now is the time to prepare for your winter sports holiday, says Naomi Dinneen from Physio 1to1 in Godalming A WEEK in the Alps, or your favorite alpine destination, is great fun… but also hard work. Unless you are an endurance athlete, this is the only time you will exercise for up to seven hours a day, and perhaps six days in a row.

The extra strength and flexibility you will gain will make the holiday much more enjoyable, what's more this much needed preparation will reduce your risk of injury. With one in six holidaymakers suffering an injury whilst taking part in snow sports, this is key not just for a fun trip, but also a fun 2018.

If you were taking on a fitness challenge this big, like running the Marathon De Sables, you would put in at least 4-6 months of training so why not do the same for your winter ‘skiathon’?

So what can you do?

A February half-term skiing trip seems like a long way away but it’s actually only 14 weeks away and with the likely two week break over Christmas, it’s time to get going.

A February half-term skiing trip seems like a long way away but it’s actually only 14 weeks away. November 2017

Start now - get fit, strong, flexible and balanced Key things to work on are: your cardiovascular fitness, quadriceps and gluteal power and endurance, calf flexibility, core strength, inside thigh strength, outside thigh and hip flexibility and balance. You may also choose to include a plyometric workout involving jumping and hopping to allow you to seamlessly drop from one mogul to the next. Have you noticed whilst swooshing down the pistes that one turn is harder than the other? We’re all slightly different left to right and in normal life this might not be an issue but if you choose to go off piste or tackle a mogul field at the end of a long day, this imbalance becomes a problem. Make sure your strength programme includes single leg as well as double leg work to ensure you identify and correct these imbalances.

DREAMING OF THAT POWDER DAY?

Keep in mind that your form or posture throughout this fitness routine is much more important than your reps. Quality over quantity! An oldie but goodie is the squat, traditionally taught as a held position against the wall. This hold can be beneficial in building thigh strength, but keep in mind that as we go down the slopes turning and absorbing the bumps, our knees slightly straighten and bend. To improve on the isometric wall squat, place your back against a slippery wall with your feet hip width apart and at least two feet away from the wall. A: gently bend your knees sliding your back down the wall keeping the knees aligned over the second toes.

However, if you’re getting knee pain it might be time to: Get those new niggles or old injuries assessed That low back niggle or shoulder twinge you’ve had for the last three months has probably been better over the summer but after lifting the kids' skis (and quite possibly them) up to the ski lift you might not feel quite the same. An average course of treatment generally lasts 3-4 weeks, then any imbalances identified tend to take 2-3 months to correct so get a head start and you’ll be laughing by Christmas. Warm up and cool down In the weeks preceding the holiday it’s worth getting into the habit of a 5 minute ski-specific warm-up and cool down. If regularly practised this will become second nature and easily reproduced while you’re waiting for that cold beer or hot chocolate at the après-ski bar.

Then B: return to the start position with control. Repeat this movement 10 x 3 and you should feel that familiar thigh ‘warmth’.

The Hampton Estate Phil Kemp visits a family-owned and run traditional agricultural estate – and unravels one of Surrey’s bestkept secrets. IF YOU have ever taken the road between Puttenham and Seale you will have undoubtedly seen an impressive hop garden nestling on the southern slopes of The Hog’s Back, an imposing 500ft chalk ridge linking the towns of Guildford and Farnham. You may also have had glimpses of historic parklands and woodlands and perhaps, like me, wondered who they belong to. My visit to the Hampton Estate was, certainly for me, the unravelling of one of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secrets’. Bridget and Bill Biddell not only reside at the very handsome Hampton Lodge, they have also taken on the responsibility from Bridget’s family for managing 2,500 acres, providing a kaleidoscope of different uses that bring direct benefit, not just to the estate, but also to the local community. My tour with Bill started in front of some wall-mounted maps in the estate office, which he used to provide a fascinating overview of the full range of activities the family manage on a day-to-day basis. “This is Puttenham Common, owned by the estate but providing 500 acres of open access to the public. It is managed by Surrey County Council and attracts visitors who enjoy the walks and rides it has to offer.”

One of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secrets’ Bill taps a finger on a large dark green area of the map. “We have a lot of forestry activity on the estate, and are well known for the range of woodland we manage. We produce commercial softwoods, and amenity hardwoods with some of this also for commercial use. We are very sandy here, in common with much of Surrey, and being poor

soil this is perfect for trees. My father-in-law was an absolutely excellent forester and put in lots of trees after the Second World War. So we grow a lot of pine - Corsican pine, Scots pine, and Douglas fir - which all thrive on this sandy soil.” Having now got a visual impression of just how large and wide-ranging the land management is at Hampton, I was intrigued as to how this is managed and put to use.

Above: Forestry work at the Hampton Estate. Below: Film sets on the Hampton Estate

Bill smiled proudly as he pointed at a framed certificate hanging on the wall. “In 2014, we won the Best of England multipurpose woodland from the Forestry Society. We have three foresters, two full-time and one part-time, and this ensures we have excellent specimens of trees. Not only do we sell logs locally, we also use a lot of the timber ourselves for the biomass boilers we have put in over the last ten years, both in our Shoelands offices development and in the estate houses. And of course, everyone enjoys walking through the woodland where we have installed a car park and opened up the rides.” Walking across the courtyard from the estate office towards some outbuildings, Bill paused and pointed across to Hampton House. “This was recently transformed into a château for a scene from a new television series Deep State. It’s a spy thriller produced by Fox Productions. We were a ‘safe house’ for a mother and two children who were hostages here. She escaped, got out of the house and ran down towards the lake. We watched some scenes being filmed there at night with lots of lights and production people everywhere. It was very exciting!” We entered a beamed room adorned with large photos providing a colourful panorama of different scenes of Hampton Estate. Bill understandably continued to brag about their home being used for filming, and not just because of the big screen names wandering through from time to time. Being chosen as a film location serves as a perfect illustration of just how special the whole estate is with its mix of historic parkland, grazing meadows and traditional farmyards - as well

as, of course, the imposing Grade II Georgian house and gardens. Quintessentially very English.

Hampton Estate hops

“The estate was used for the filming of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe about ten years ago. We had virtually the whole of Universal Studios here, and they were with us for a year and a half – this because having built the set of the village of Nottingham there was a Screen Actors Guild strike in the middle of filming!” Other filming activity at Hampton has included The Hollow, an episode of the ITV series Agatha Christie’s Poirot and more recently A Field in England, a history drama following a group of deserters from the Civil War in 17th century England. “Filming is certainly a fun side to what we do here. I gave Steven Spielberg a tour of the estate in my pickup once, oh, and we’ve had George Clooney pop in for tea!” Bill’s broad smile hinted at just how much they enjoy the hustle and bustle of a film production invasion. “We are quite well -known in the filming world for big scale sets on a private estate. All the location agents know who we are.” Having seen the impressive hop gardens many a time from the road in Puttenham, and being a bit of an ale drinker myself, I simply had to find out more. In fact, I was quite surprised I had sat on my question for so long!

“The Hampton Estate has always grown hops – and we’ve always grown one variety which is Fuggle, a classic English aroma hop. We supply the Hog’s Back Brewery with the hops for their Tongham Tea and Harveys Brewery down in Sussex – as well as The Black Sheep Brewery, Adnams and Timothy Taylor who have all been using Fuggles in their recipes for years. Oh, and we’ve supplied the Silent Pool Distillery over in Albury with hops to mix into the aromatics for their brilliant gin!” I pointed at the wall-mounted photo of a very friendly-looking cow, which

We restocked with Pedigree Sussex because the Sussex are a lovely breed of cow – very hardy and very relaxed. These guys just potter around and eat everything and anything they can, which works well for us given our poor sandy soil. We have 40 cows and one bull – and 20 of their calves every year go into our beef output. On the last Friday of the month we

Don’t be left in the cold this Winter.

“Young trees we are growing need protecting,” Bill explained. “You don’t want the wild deer we have on the estate eating them so we have to cull the deer for control. And our roe deer make excellent venison. We’ve got pheasants of course too.” The Hampton Estate is undoubtedly an outstanding agricultural estate – which thrives on its diversity. Sadly, unless I fall off the bottom of the page, I’ve had to ignore the orienteering, the angling, horse riding, gundog trials, cycling, farm walks, wild herbs, oh - and biomass-heated office space, rented accommodation and venues for weddings and private functions… Phil Kemp is a Godalming-based writer and photographer. www.weyriver.co.uk FIND OUT MORE Telephone: 01483 810465. APPARENTLY THE average woman in the UK wears just five outfits on a rarely altering loop and as we all love a survey, here are some more of Oxfam’s fascinating findings: * Nearly half of the nation admit to having ‘wardrobe rage’ (irrational tantrums when choosing an outfit) * On average, women spend seventeen minutes choosing a look, with men spending thirteen minutes. * Almost a third of Britons feel that their wardrobe is a mess and half confess they need to declutter. * There are 3.6 billion clothes left unworn, a whopping 57 items per person, an average of 16 items left unworn. * One in ten also arrive late for work because of the time spent in choosing their outfits. * Twenty one percent of women admitted that choosing an outfit caused them to row with their partner, and fourteen percent have refused to go out as a result of struggling to feel happy in an outfit. You can start the process yourself with small steps. It is one of those jobs you can tackle on a free morning or a Saturday afternoon; give yourself some ‘me time’, and enjoy a good clothes cleanse.

I have had a lifetime, it feels, of working in the fashion industry, from fashion designer and magazine stylist to a personal stylist. I work with wonderful ‘real’ people and those in particular who have lost direction and confidence or just lack the time to develop a wardrobe that is full of clothes they love.

Tackle one drawer at a time. Take everything out, T-shirts, sweaters, crumpled vest tops. Do they fit? Are they clean? Do you still wear them or could they be useful hanging with that low top that always gapes? Then only put back in wearable, clean items and deal with the others. Another day, another drawer until you are ready to work on the full wardrobe spaces. Give yourself an hour. Decide on a time to look at individual items and try them on. Make an outfit and hang them together to save time, even with the right underwear which is sometimes hard to find at 7am.

Do they need altering? Perhaps the jacket sleeves are too long? Take them along to your local alteration shop and get them to pin and shorten for you.

Shorten loved prints to make more wearable tops or even change their identity altogether, cushions are a simple solution.

Does it make you smile? Such a small thing, but with all the sadness around, clothes can be a comforting layer in your life. Maybe just a soft luxury fabric, a beautiful print or a link to fun memories. A recent client had her lovely motherin-law’s jackets that we had altered to fit, as they were great fabrics and reminded her of sentimental times. Learn to let go Give yourself permission to let go of clothes that may have cost too much and have hardly been worn. We all make mistakes but it’s better to sell or give to charity for someone else to enjoy instead of harbouring guilt over it. Add one or two new Once your wardrobe is clear of clutter, think about adding a few classics for the new season. A check jacket, an alternative to leather with jeans and dresses; a splash of the hot autumn colour, red; soft prints in winter florals and an alternative to denim, corduroy is back again. The inspiration: Check jacket with crisp white shirt Red sweater layered over stripes Dark florals with bright accessories Add a block heel to add feminine proportions.

Elegant perfumed roses • GARDENING

With Beth Otway arch, adorning a wall, grown around a window, or clothing a doorway. Rosa 'The Pilgrim' will reach about 12ft (3.6m) tall Container roses If you're looking for a container rose, for optimum results choose a large, deep planter that will accommodate your rose's long taproot, and opt for a smaller-sized rose.

As autumn turns to winter, days shorten and the prospect of warming ourselves by the fire may be more enticing than being outdoors, take time to warm your heart with thoughts of elegantly perfumed roses. This is the perfect opportunity to order roses as bare root plants to plant during the winter time to deliver charming, beautiful rose blooms and delectable fragrance to your garden or allotment next summer. Ordering bare root plants is a prudent method of purchasing roses, fruit trees, and other trees and shrubs. Bare root plants are usually less costly than container plants, and as you're ordering the plants bare root without containers, it's often a more ecologically friendly way to purchase them. In my experience, bare root plants tend to be healthier and establish better than container grown plants, especially in the case of deep-rooted plants like roses and trees.

I've been in love with Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton' since this delightful rose's introduction over ten years ago. 'Lady Emma Hamilton' is a highly-perfumed rose that produces absolutely charming, warm apricot-orange blushed, beautiful bowl-shaped blooms, which envelop anyone making its acquaintance in a delicious, fruity fragrance, which has a warmth and intensity that we look for in roses but rarely find. Growing 3.5ft (1m) tall and 3ft (90cm) wide, Rosa 'Lady Emma Hamilton' is a fabulous choice for a container, or a border where its charismatic flowers and their delectable scent can be enjoyed. Container-grown roses benefit from a loam-based compost. I mix my own compost, adding Dalefoot's wool-based compost for extra water retention and nutrients. Wherever you're planting roses, don't forget to apply mycorrhizal fungi at planting time. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with plants, the fungi helps the plant to develop a more extensive, wider-reaching root system, which benefits the plants, making the plant more resilient in times of drought or stress, and allowing new plants to establish quickly.

If you're looking for a sumptuous, dreamy climbing rose to decorate your front doorway, I doubt you could find a better rose that Rosa 'The Pilgrim' with its softly coloured yellow blooms, which bring a gentle, soothing light to even the dullest day of our British summertime. The many-petalled blooms of Rosa 'The Pilgrim' form delightful rosettes, which produce a warm and delicious tea rose fragrance that has a sensual myrrh character. This beautiful rose with its graceful flowers, which have an ethereal quality and alluring perfume, would make a wonderful feature, whether grown over an

Baked Whole Onions with Bacon and Rosemary My gran was the first person I remember baking whole onions, and it’s good to see that they’re now appearing on menus more often. Keeping the skins on during cooking helps the onions keep their shape. Vary the stuffing as much as you like, and you could use smaller onions for a fantastic accompaniment for roast chicken. It’s a great dish for vegetarians, too, if you replace the bacon with chestnuts. The cooking time will be the same. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

Peter Wakeham is the Community Fundraiser Surrey for the Royal British Legion

THE ROYAL British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community. They spend around £1.6 million every week providing information, advice and support to our beneficiaries. Whether it’s families coping with the loss of a loved one, handy-van services for veterans, money and careers advice for service leavers or residential care, they are there to help. The RBL provided £27 million to help set up the Battle Back Centre at Lilleshall, as part of its commitment to support wounded, injured and sick service personnel. Part of the Ministry of Defence aid recovery programme, it provides sport and adventurous activities for these personnel across the forces to aid their recovery. In Brighton Bravo 22 Company has been set up to provide recovery and wellbeing through the arts, including model making, sculpture and collage.

For families they give well deserved breaks (for example, bucket and spade adventure holidays for service children), breaks for the elderly and most importantly, rest and recuperation for our service personnel and their families on returning from war zones. Service men often find it difficult to adjust to civvy street when they leave the Armed Forces and the Legion are there to help them as they prepare for this new life and to kick start a new career. The Legion also provides specialist compensation advice, help with debt and emergency situations, benefit advice and support through grants and loans. Their Handy Van service in operates in 21 counties, giving help for those small jobs around the house from changing light bulbs and providing ramps and sheds to house Legion-provided Electrically Propelled Vehicles. There are six Legion care homes throughout the country providing short and long term care for serving and ex-servicemen and their families, including four that help with specialist dementia care. Mais House at Bexhill, one of these homes has recently received £31,000 to refurbish their communal lounge, install overhead hoists for 10 bedrooms and provide a new storage area.

• THE WALKS

Woolbeding Landscapes This is a gentle walk taking in wildlife, riverside views, and wide open landscapes. Gentle, easygoing underfoot, some stiles and slopes. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome. Please note that there may be livestock in some areas. 1. Face the signboard, take the path to your right; cross a small track and follow beneath the line of pylons. Enjoy the views to your right, overlooking the South Downs. Continue over the brow of the hill and descend 100 metres to a place where paths meet. 2. From the track junction, go left, then the first right, which heads down the valley - you're in heathland here, a mixture of bell heather, ling, and dwarf gorse. Continue until you reach where another path crosses the way. There's a small shady pond to your right. 3. Keep straight on down the valley towards the house at the bottom. Turn right, and follow the track until you reach the lane. 4. Look for the waymarker to your right, on the opposite side of the lane, then follow the footpath

through the trees out into the open field. Continue along the hedgerow, cross the stile, then turn left and go downhill through the fields, going under the pylons and along the next field; at the bottom, turn right along Stedham Lane. 5. Within 50 metres, to your left you'll see a waymarker pointing to a steeply descending path beside ancient beech trees. Head down the path to the bottom, by the river, where you'll find Stedham ford and old mill. Keep this side of the river Rother, turn left and follow the riverside path. Continue, passing over a small wooden bridge, until you pass through a wooden gate, through the next field. Before the end of the field, turn left at a wooden gate leading up into the woods.

Box Hill Riverside Walk As you walk along the River Mole look out for dragonflies, wagtails and the electric blue of a darting kingfisher. Stop awhile to take in the ageing Second World War concrete structures which stand sentinel along the water's edge. This is a circular walk with a steep descent and climb. In wet weather it can be very muddy. Cattle graze along part of the route so please keep your dog under close control. 1. You can choose to start your walk at the visitor centre, or at Salomons Memorial Viewpoint. Once at the viewpoint looking out over Surrey and Sussex, walk down the steps and follow the path to the right, following the signs. Look out for the left turn which takes you diagonally down the hill below the viewpoint. 2. Reaching the tarmac road turn right and walk along it. The fields on either side of you are part of Box Hill Farm. 3. Continue along the road, ignoring other turnings until the road runs out. You’ll see a gate to your right hand side – go through this. To your left you’ll see the River Mole which you’ll walk along for the next mile. 4. Here the species-rich slopes of Box Hill to your right are often grazed by belted Galloway cattle for the conservation of our rare flowers and insects.

Soon you’ll come across Pixham weir and mill. Until the early 20th century, the River Mole turned several waterwheels here, principally for corn grinding and fulling (a term used to describe cleaning cloth, particularly wool). 5. The path will take you under Pixham viaduct, built in the Victorian era. Shortly you’ll come to an unusual collection of 12 anti-tank cylinders perched at the water's edge. Built in 1940, they were part of a wider anti-invasion scheme. 6. This stretch of land is floodplain and the creation of a ‘scrape’ in this area will form a wetland habitat for wildlife such as amphibians and waterfowl. Selfseeding reeds, rushes and sedges will provide a valuable nesting and foraging habitat for wading birds. The pathway will now take you away from the banks of the river, climbing into woodland. Just before you start your climb, look through the trees to see a Second World War Type 24 Infantry shell-proof pill box. This would have been defended by infantry with Bren guns and covered the east bank of the River Mole and the lower western slopes of Box Hill. 7. A set of steps will take you uphill through woodland comprising yew, beech and oak. 8. At the top of the steps, turn left. Carry along the path through the woods and take the first right hand turn. Look out for Swiss Cottage, the former home of John Logie Baird and the site of his first

Jottings Taxing times for pension drawdown People aged 55 or over now have the option of taking unlimited withdrawals from their pension. The new pension freedoms have opened up a range of flexible options for those who have saved for years to build up their pension fund. The best way of taking full advantage of the new pension freedoms is to drawdown, which allows you to withdraw as much or as little as you wish from your pension fund. You can make these withdrawals whilst still having the remainder invested. Initially you can take up to 25% of your pension fund as tax-free cash then take more regular or one-off taxable amounts. Tax-free drawdown. If you have little or no income you can potentially take all your withdrawals tax-free as long as the total amount you withdraw does not exceed your personal allowance (£11,500 in the 2017/18 tax year). A major benefit of drawdown is the flexibility as you can increase or decrease withdrawals to minimise the amount of tax you pay. What are the tax implications? After your initial tax-free 25% withdrawal the later drawdown payments are taxable via PAYE, in the same way that income from your employment is taxed. What if you overpay on your tax? If you think you have overpaid on the tax charged on your withdrawals then you can claim it back by contacting the HMRC. There are different forms you need to access on the HMRC website to reclaim tax depending on your personal circumstances. Go onto their website and search for reclaim tax. Paying tax on withdrawals afterwards Once HMRC has supplied an accurate tax code all your further withdrawals will be taxed in line with standard tax bands based on your individual tax allowances. However, you must be aware that if you take large withdrawals in same tax year (runs from 6th April 2017 to 5th April 2018) you could be moved up a tax band.
