THE EDITOR'S NOTE IT IS always slightly disconcerting to come back from a sunny holiday abroad, return to work and immediately have to deal with adverts and events that are all promoting Christmas. The move from summer to autumn this year seemed to be almost instantaneous, so I have gone from shorts and polos to jumpers and jackets overnight. Let’s hope that we can hold off using scarves for a good few months yet. At the time of writing, my friend Jane and I are just about to see off 50 vintage, veteran and classic motor cars on the annual GUTS Motor Tour, which raises money for Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening at the Royal Surrey hospital. This year, we are visiting the Wellington Country Park, followed by a picnic lunch at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. This is the fifth tour we have organised and after this year, we will have raised close to £20,000 for a very worthwhile local charity. If anyone out there would like to help Jane and I with this endeavour next year (and beyond), please email me at gutsmotortour@gmail.com as we would love to have a bit more help! You will note this month that we have slightly redesigned the cover and the insides of the magazine to incorporate our new logo, which is one we have been using for the past few months on our social media pages. These are just a few cosmetic changes to the magazine as we approach our tenth year of publishing community magazines next year. How time flies! On page 8 of this month’s issue, you can read about VantagePoint being awarded the Trade Mark Surrey Hills. I won’t repeat myself here but we are all very proud of this and my thanks goes to my colleagues and our writers who have all promoted this area, its businesses and the products they make and sell over the past nine years.

Landlords beware! Is your property EPC compliant? Since 1 April 2018, there is a requirement for any properties rented out in the private rented sector to have a minimum energy performance rating of ‘E’ on an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The regulations apply to new lets and renewals of tenancies with effect from 1 April 2018, and for all existing tenancies from 1 April 2020. Unless there is an exemption (such as the property is listed and upgrading the energy efficiency would be detrimental to the character of the building), it is unlawful to rent a property which breaches the requirement for a minimum E rating. Penalties up to £4,000 can be imposed for such breaches. The regulations apply to any domestic, private rented property which is required to have an EPC. If the property is exempt, then it must be listed on the PRS Exemptions Register – the property will be assessed and, once declared exempt, the exemption is valid for a period of 5 years. These new rules have come into force quietly, and it is likely that many private landlords are blissfully unaware that they are letting unlawfully - we are yet to see how the regulations will be enforced by the local authorities. Accordingly, not only those with existing properties, but those looking to buy-
to-let will have to be conscious of the EPC rating at the time of initial purchase. Even those buying a property to live in should be aware of these obligations as they may wish to consider letting it out in the future. There are a number of schemes in place to help landlords improve the energy efficiency of their rental properties. For further information, you can contact your local authority, who will be able to provide direction in this regard. Another point for landlords to be aware of is that it will be considered an offence to withhold consent for any reasonable request from a tenant to improve the energy efficiency of their home. There is further guidance on the government website as to what constitutes a ‘reasonable’ request and on what grounds landlords can refuse such requests: https://www.gov.uk/ government/ publications/the-private-rented-propertyminimum-standard-landlord-guidancedocuments. Only time will tell how this will impact landlords, and ultimately their profits!

The Watts Gallery and Artists’ Village Phil Kemp is captivated by an engrossing tour of the home and art of England’s Michelangelo. HIDDEN AWAY in the beautiful Compton countryside near Guildford is a unique celebration of the ‘Art for All’ passion of the Victorian artists George and Mary Watts. I confess that, apart from a brief visit some years before The Watts Gallery was completely renovated following a very effective fundraising drive, I had not taken much interest. However during a tour of the gallery a few weeks ago I very quickly started to scold myself for having missed out on a truly fascinating and absorbing experience. This not only for the art I was to enjoy, but also learning how The Watts Gallery and Artists’ Village proactively engages with the community - and reaches out to provide a wide range of opportunities to experience hands-on creative ‘make’ sessions. As we approached the main building my guide, Susanna Plummer, explained what a critical role volunteers play in keeping the gallery open. “We have over 300 volunteers who you will meet throughout your visit. They literally help everywhere and are hands-on with everything ensuring we stay open. A hard core of about 50 put in a lot of hours on a constant and ongoing basis. They’re brilliant!”

“This is the main gallery,” Susanna explained as we walked into a very spacious well-lit area with tall ceilings divided by a series of arches. The first room boasted an amazing rich red flocked wallpaper, and the second a deep blue - both of which so impressed me with the way they didn’t detract as you’d perhaps expect, but instead provided a perfect backdrop for the collection of paintings displayed there. “There are a couple of works I’d like to introduce you to that for us are pride of place. This is After the Deluge,” said Susanna, as we stood beneath a large oil painting with a huge sun at its centre completely dwarfing a watery landscape below. “The idea is that after 40 days and 40 nights of rain in Noah’s Flood this portrays the 41st day. Now, the open-ended question for you is as to whether you interpret this as a sunset or perhaps a sunrise?” The more I looked at the painting, which took George Watts more than five years to complete, the

THE WATTS GALLERY AND ARTISTS' VILLAGE postcard of this painting into Robben Island where he was imprisoned and it gave him strength. Barack Obama, who apparently had also been deeply moved by the painting, used this as the theme of a keynote address and for a book he had written.” Now initially, as I started to examine the painting, all I could see was a female figure sitting hunched on a rock blindfolded and holding a lyre. But as I looked deeper I could see that she was actually seated on a globe, her face looked totally at peace, and despite the fact that there was only one string left on the instrument, she could still play it. Susanna had obviously noted my deepening response, and smiling she asked: “And can you make out the star at the top? One little star – and that’s hope isn’t it? Children tend to spot that star straight away!” I must admit that I hadn’t, but thanks to Susanna I realised not only what a remarkable gallery this was but what an incredible artist Watts had been. I had already been challenged prior to my visit by a description of the artist as ‘England’s Michelangelo’ - which to me as an uninformed visitor seemed perhaps overstated. But I very quickly came around to the realisation that he was so capable of delivering very enquiring interpretations of what he saw and experienced around him, and with such deep emotion. Surely, he and Michelangelo were not dissimilar in that respect?

more absorbed in the question I became. I was looking for positives, and perhaps what is so clever here is that perhaps a sunrise as a beginning is more positive than a sunset which represents the end. Or does a glorious sunset augur well for a perfect day tomorrow? Susanna broke me away from my conundrum as she steered me towards the second painting, although I was not in any way prepared for the emotional response this was to trigger for me. “This is Hope which Watts painted around the same time,” explained Susanna. “I went to a talk awhile ago in which I learned that Nelson Mandela had snuck a

THE WATTS GALLERY AND ARTISTS' VILLAGE
“When they came to Compton they realised that not only had a lot of the traditional crafts fallen out of favour, but that the largely local agricultural economy was declining in the face of the modernising Victorian era,” explained Susanna. “So they decided to help train the local community in practical crafts and founded The Compton Pottery in 1898. In fact the Watts Chapel was crafted and built by Mary, an acclaimed designer in her own right, with the help of the community.” If you’ve not visited the extraordinary red brick domed chapel a few hundred yards down the lane from the house you must. It is an Arts and Crafts masterpiece adorned with terracotta tiles and boasts breathtaking blue-green-bronze panels sympathetically illuminated by recently upgraded lighting. A visit to the house provides an opportunity to explore George and Mary’s adjoining studios where they worked tirelessly on pushing the bounds of their creativity. “Here in The Compton Gallery you can watch a film about the Estate and see the Artists’ Village being born,” said Susanna. “You can also see personal effects in the display cases. This one for example has Mary’s diary in it. And you learn about how successful the Compton Pottery was trading as it did until the 1950s. Pieces from the pottery were sold at Liberty’s, the famous store in London.” I was particularly taken by George’s own studio where he worked every day, and which is dominated by the huge canvas of The Court of Death, his last major work. It hangs on a hoist above a trap door so it could be lowered in to the room below enabling him to effortlessly work on the higher parts. Oh, and don’t forget to ask to see the skeleton in the cupboard… On the ground floor there are two learning studios where hands-on educational visits are hosted. Madeleine Pike, who helps organise the studios’ activities, explained: “We tend to tailor the workshop visits to what they’re studying in school. So they can be quite specifically geared for example to look at pottery, sculpture, or printmaking, with the creative workshop led by the artist. And we also have makebased workshops open to everyone.”

Pets and Fireworks Zoe Blake considers some precautions to keep your pet calm on fireworks night WE ARE getting nearer to that time of year that many a pet owner fears… fireworks night! This can be a stressful time for our pets and us owners. Sadly it’s not just a ‘one night’ occurrence anymore, they can continue on for a few weeks making it impossible for us to know when we might get caught out. It’s natural that our pets may show a mild reaction to the noises, however reactions can be severe and put our pet at risk of injury. Dogs may pant, shake, hide away, bark, toilet themselves, and some may even destroy their immediate environment almost trying to dig themselves free. Cats will hide, become withdrawn, urinate in the house and over groom. If we plan early we can hopefully reduce the stress and anxiety that is felt by our pets (and us). So what can we do? Before the night First set up a den; often animals will feel safer if they have a hiding place to go to. This can already be an area that our pets like to spend time in, such as a crate/bed/ wardrobe. Provide plenty of bedding and padding to ensure the animal sees it as inviting. Pop a blanket over the top if you can as this can muffle the external noises. If you don’t have this sort of set up already then now is the time to think about where you might be able to make one. Moving furniture and clearing out cupboards can free up areas that can be adapted but

please remember that your pet needs to feel this is a place of safety and not somewhere that is seen as a punishment. Ideally set this up a good few weeks before you anticipate them starting. There are a number of calming products/supplements on the market which may help, I am happy to discuss these with you if you contact me. Sadly for some, these products are not enough and so medication can be prescribed but you would need to discuss this with your veterinary surgeon. I often recommend a ‘dummy run’ before the night if using medication to check that the dose prescribed has the desired effect. On the night Ensure all windows and doors are closed and you have the TV on or music playing. Distract your pets by offering them toys, treats or playtime. Walk all dogs early so as not to get caught out by the early evening fireworks. Keep all cats inside overnight and consider bringing in rabbits/guinea pigs that live outside. Ensure all resources are provided for your pet if you have changed their normal circumstances, so a normally outdoor cat will require a litter tray etc. Most importantly don’t punish your pet for displaying unwanted behaviour as this can make them more distressed. Consider a natural supplement or pheromone product to make them feel calmer. Use medication as prescribed. After the night Consider a de-sensitizing programme once firework season is over. Good luck! Charcoal Making by the Wey Valley Woodman
Phil Kemp meets up with artisan Ian Baldwin to learn how charcoal is made sustainably WE ALL enjoy a good barbecue in the summer, don’t we? And the majority of us still enjoy and champion the traditional smoky sizzle over red-hot charcoal, rather than the more clinical cook on a fancy gasflame grill. As you noisily tip a good pile of lump charcoal into the bowl of your barbecue have you ever wondered how it is made and where it comes from? I went to see local artisan charcoal burner Ian Baldwin who with over 20 years’ experience was to really open my eyes on this traditional craft in action. As we walked towards his yard on the Birtley Estate near Bramley, I could see his three kilns with neat wood piles surrounding each of them. One was in full burn, chimneys smoking. “I worked as a ranger for nearly 18 years at various locations for the council,” explained Ian in response to my question as to how he got involved in charcoal. “Working in countryside management provided me with a good skills-base and knowledge of
everything woody. And the nice thing about what I’m doing now is that I’m able to deal with say a problem dangerous tree and turn it into something useful. A lot of the timber you see sitting around here you couldn’t do much with. A lot is very knotty and low-grade firewood, and I can re-use in effect old fencing posts for example - and we’ve even turned an old butcher’s block into charcoal!” Standing next to the closest of the kilns, each of which endearingly have their own names, these being Hermione, Ron and Harry (the oldest one) which you may have already twigged are Potteresque, Ian started to explain the process. “A normal bonfire has unlimited oxygen available. Inside a kiln you can restrict this. Around the outer circumference and level to the ground are four air vents. With the four chimneys you have in effect eight points of the compass, four in and four out, providing a constant but controllable feed of oxygen.”

CHARCOAL MAKING
We looked inside one of the kilns being prepared for a new burn. “We stack the kiln to the top and then pour hot coals down into the middle to get it going, so effectively starting a small fire in the centre fed by a limited supply of oxygen. It's more like baking wood in a process called pyrolysis. This is where you’re using fire to boil off the more reactive chemicals first. The water boils off as steam. The slowest in the queue to grab oxygen is carbon - which is handy of course as that’s exactly what you’re after.” Ian pointed to the smoke coming out of the chimneys of the kiln in full burn. “First you get white smoke which is mainly steam as the water boils off. Then the smoke turns blue, to grey, to colourless. And it is at that point that we stop any more oxygen getting in by filling in the vent holes at the bottom to close the burn down.” I watched Ian’s team for the day hard at work unloading freshly-made charcoal from one kiln in readiness for grading on what Ian fondly refers to as Santa’s sleigh, as the chute is remarkably similar in shape. And then loading it with fresh logs. Mike, Ollie and Richard were only recognisable by the colours of their t-shirts as all were wearing respiratory masks. “And what’s nice about it really is that it is sort of ‘grunty’. You’re humping bits of wood around and putting them in the right place. There is a degree of technicality of course but it i s minimal.” Looking inside one of the large paper sacks filled with perfectly baked charcoal ready to go on sale I felt that this was quite a degree of understatement, but I was in the company of undoubtedly a h i g h l y experienced specialist. And this view was endorsed by what Ian explained next. “Biochar is a new word you need to look up. It’s very small bits of charcoal that are an extremely clever soil improver. First discovered in the Amazon as thick layers of charcoal from a long-lost civilisation - added to the soil it grabs hold of not just water but

trace minerals that would otherwise leach out and be lost. I’m currently investigating with Secretts on trials using my biochar, and hopefully involving Surrey University too.” Ian had also shown me some large flat tins with holes punched into the lids, and in which he’d burned willow to make charcoal pencils favoured by artists. And this is something you could do at home. But could you start your own charcoal kiln? Well yes, if you can f i n d an acceptable location given smoking chimneys – and have around £1,300 to spend on a new one. You could build one I suppose if you have the metalworking skills – but achieving the highly effective burns of The Wey Valley Woodman would take a lot of learning. COMMUNITY
Celebrating our borough's blooming great gardeners
V.
GREEN FINGERED creativity was celebrated through the theme of ‘peace’ to mark the centenary of World War I at the annual Guildford in Bloom Awards on 12th September. Guildford Mayor, Cllr Michael Parsons presented more than 178 awards and six trophies at the event held at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Audiences and winners were treated to a show-stopping opening from the Guildford Shakespeare Company while BBC Radio Surrey’s Joe Talbot hosted the event. This year was particularly special as a new category was launched to encourage young people into thinking about and understanding their own gardens. The ‘Student Garden Showcase’ was won by Ben Harbour and the University of Surrey Student Garden Team. With overall competition winners Best in Show award going to Lisa Keech and The Robin Hood Pub. Formed in 1981, Guildford in Bloom brings together community groups, businesses, schools and
residents to promote imaginative ways to make the borough look its best and to promote health & wellbeing, community working and champion Guildford’s natural environment. The competition is launched in spring each year and is free to enter and open to all in Guildford and the borough villages. For more information and to see the complete list of winners, please call 01483 444718 or visit www.guildford.gov.uk/guildfordinbloom.

Autumn Recipes Shallot, Pumpkin and Red Pepper Soup with Candied Shallot and Pumpkin Seeds
Butternut Squash, Shallot & Butterbean Casserole
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
For the soup: 4 red peppers, deseeded and cut into quarters, 30g butter, 1 tbsp rapeseed oil, 6 shallots, diced and peeled, 750g pumpkin, peeled and diced into 2cm pieces, 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped, 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed, leaves of one sprig of thyme, 1.2 litre good vegetable stock, 100ml double cream (optional), sea salt and black pepper. For the candied shallots: 250g unsalted butter, 1/4 tsp of cumin seeds, 8 (250g) shallots, peeled and sliced, 1/4 tsp ground cumin, 1/4 tsp paprika, 1 tsp honey. To serve: 2 tsp chives, finely chopped, 30g pumpkin seeds, toasted, 120ml low fat crème fraiche.
Method:
1. Place the peppers skin side up, on a baking sheet and roast in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the skins are charred. Remove from the oven and place in a bowl. Cover with cling film and leave to cool. Once cool, peel off the skins, and reserve the flesh. 2. Meanwhile, melt the butter with oil in a large, heavy based saucepan. Add the shallots, pumpkin and red chilli, season with sea salt and black pepper and sweat the vegetables for 5-10 minutes without browning. Add the garlic and thyme and cook on a low heat for a further minute. Pour in the vegetable stock, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 15 minutes. Add in the red peppers and cook for a further 5 minutes. 3. For the candied shallots, melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat, add the cumin seeds and shallots and fry until soft. Add the ground cumin and paprika and cook the shallots for a further 1 minute, stirring the shallot mixture all the time to prevent burning. Fry until caramelised for approx. 1-2 minutes. Remove from the heat and season with sea salt and stir in the honey. 4. Blend the soup in a food processor or with a hand blender and adjust the seasoning to taste. Return to the pan, if a little thick add more stock and if you wish, stir in the cream. Gently reheat the soup and ladle into warmed bowls. Place a spoonful of low fat crème fraiche in each and sprinkle with the chives, toasted pumpkin seeds and candied shallots.

1 medium butternut squash (approx 600-800g), cut into 2.5cm chunks (leave the skin on for added texture), 12 shallots, peeled and left whole, 6 sage leaves, roughly chopped, 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 3 cloves garlic, crushed, 1 heaped tbsp flour, 175ml white wine, 1 tin butterbeans, drained and rinsed, 400ml vegetable stock, 2 tbsp sundried tomato paste. For the dumplings: 200g self raising flour, 100g vegetable suet, 2 tsp dried mixed herbs, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 5-8 tbsp cold water.
Method:
1. Place the butternut squash and shallots in a roasting tin along with the olive oil, sage leaves and a good grind of pepper and salt to taste. Roast in a hot oven (220°C/ Gas 7) for 20-30 minutes until the vegetables are tinged with colour at the edges. 2. Whilst the squash and shallots are cooking make the dumplings by combining all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add enough cold water to bring it together to make a soft dough. Shape the dough into 8 small balls and set aside. 3. When the squash and shallots are cooked, remove from the oven and turn the temperature down to 180°C/Gas 4. 4. Add the flour to the roasting tin, stirring to coat the vegetables and soak up all the roasting juices. Add the garlic and white wine to the roasting tin, scraping the bottom to release all the sticky caramelised bits. 5. Transfer to an oven proof casserole and add the beans, sundried tomato paste and enough vegetable stock to cover the vegetables. Give everything a good stir, Bring to the boil and cover. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes. 6. Remove the casserole form the oven and carefully add the dumplings so they float on the surface. Return to the oven, uncovered, for 20 minutes until the dumplings are crispy on the outside and fluffy and cooked through on the inside. Serve immediately with mashed potatoes and green beans. The 40 walks organised each year include some of our more local heathland sites such as Thursley Common, a great place to see Dartford Warblers and Surrey’s only breeding Curlews, our nearest RSPB reserves at Farnham Heath and Pulborough Brooks, and the occasional venture further afield to the Sussex and Hampshire coasts and even to deepest Kent. These walks attract members with a variety of experience, and there is always someone on hand to offer help to those who are still in the early stages of their interest in birdwatching. Occasionally, members want to go further afield than is comfortable for a walk, so three or four times per annum, the group organises a day’s coach trip to further-flung places such as the Somerset Levels, Slimbridge and Minsmere. These provide an excellent opportunity to see some of Britain’s top wildlife watching sites at modest cost, and without the hassle of driving or finding a way of reaching them by public transport. And for those who would like to go still further afield, the group liaises with major wildlife travel names such as Naturetrek and Speyside Wildlife to offer holidays in places such as the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Extremadura in Spain, and many more. One of the key roles of the group is to help raise funds for the RSPB’s work nationally, and the group takes much pride in its long term success as one of the most productive local groups in this regard. Activities include jumble sales, charity fairs, quiz nights and plant sales.
FIND OUT MORE The group offers a warm welcome to new members, and if you are interested in joining, please email membership@rspbguildford.org.uk or ring our membership secretary on 01932 344104 and full details of how to join will be sent to you. GARDENING Beth Otway
Bottle gardens and terrariums
I LOVE terrariums and bottle gardens! I so enjoy designing tiny plant worlds and creating miniature gardens. This is the ideal time to build a terrarium or bottle garden, and these Lilliputian microcosms are fun to make. They really will enhance your home and provide the perfect gardening therapy through the autumn and winter months. If you’d like to create your own terrarium or bottle garden you will need: • A clear glass vessel: you could use an old fish tank, a glass jar, or an old carboy. • Grit or gravel: to form a drainage layer at the base of your terrarium. • Activated charcoal (available online and from aquarium shops) to keep the compost sweet. • Peat free coir compost: for planting. • A bucket and water: to soak your block of coir compost in, prior to planting. • A piece of weed suppressant fabric, or a remnant of cotton material: to keep the compost above from blending into your drainage layer below – cut your material to size to cover the base of your terrarium. • Terrarium plants: Choose plants that are suited to lower light levels and high humidity. For this terrarium I have used Pileas, ferns, and Fittonias, but the choice is yours, you’ll find an extensive plant list at www.pumpkinbeth.com. Instructions: • Wash your clear glass vessel and allow to dry.
28
V.
Guildford & Villages
• If your coir compost arrives in block form you will need to soak the block in a bucket of water for up to 45 minutes before planting. It’s wise to check the compost after 15 minutes, as you may need to add more water. • Water your plants to ensure that they are hydrated and ready to be planted. • Place a 2-3cm (1”) layer of grit and activated charcoal in the base of your terrarium. • Sprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal over the top. • Then place your piece of weed suppressant fabric, or cotton material over the top to cover the grit and keep your compost separate from the drainage layer below. • Ensure that your coir compost is moist but not waterlogged, then mix some activated charcoal into your coir compost and add this compost mix to your terrarium. The compost should be about 6-7cm (2-3”) deep. • Now it’s time for the plants! You may wish to position your plants inside your terrarium first, so you can find an arrangement you’re happy with before you begin planting. • Place your planted terrarium in a bright to semi shaded position, away from harsh, direct sunlight and cold drafts. The middle of the room is often a good location, or the corners of a bright room.

WEEKEND WALK
Thursley to Grayswood This interesting walk takes you through woods and fields, up and down hills and offers some splendid views. It was submitted by Guildford Rambling Club (see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk) TURN LEFT along the road and walk about 300 yards to find a tunnel, on the right, under the A3. You will need to hop over the low safety barrier to go down steps and under the A3. On the other side, turn left and walk out into a field. Follow the path down the slope half-left to reach trees and a stile. Climb over the stile and drop down left onto a track and follow it to pass the house at Hole Farm. Go out of the entrance gate and turn right. Quickly fork left to follow the wide track for about 1.25 miles. Along the way pass a lake, on your right, ignore a finger post pointing left and eventually emerge on a bend in a metalled lane. Blackhanger Farm is down to the right but you continue forward over Halnacker Hill, passing a lone house to reach a road. Turn right and walk 350 yards, passing Halnacker Cottage, to reach a road junction. Here hook back left, signed to Brook. After about 0.25 miles, find a finger post pointing right. Follow this down and then on for over a mile, along a wide grassy corridor, sometimes along the left-hand side of fields and through a number of gates until you reach a T junction with a very wide corridor. You
can see the large modern barns of Witley Farm away to your left. Here, turn right and walk up and over slight rise and on until you reach trees. Immediately you will see, on your right, an information plaque for the site of a medieval moated manor house. There is a little island, covered in primroses and daffodils in the Spring. Continue on, quickly passing a pond on your left and swinging right to follow the path into a large field. Turn right and walk along its edge to a gate onto a metalled drive. To the left is a railway bridge but you turn right. Walk a little way, almost to South Park Farm and, here, take a footpath left and into a field. Follow the path alongside the garden fence, around the end of the garden and though a gate. Turn left and follow the hedge along the grassy track to a railway embankment. The path takes you right, through a gate and up to emerge at the start of the drive to Damson Farm. Turn left and immediately go under a railway bridge. Continue along the track, passing scattered houses until eventually emerging on the Grayswood Road with All Saints Church and the green to your right and with the Wheatsheaf further along. You could picnic in the churchyard or on the green. After lunch, walk past the pub a little way and turn right, down a private road. Just beyond the first house, take a path forking off to the right. Follow this down into trees and then up to reach and cross the railway line. On the other side, continue forward to reach a junction with a yellow arrow pointing left (towards Haslemere) and another pointing right, into a small field. Enter the field and go straight across and out onto a track. Turn left. Now comes a steady one mile climb. You continue along the track, ignoring a faint fork right at a point where the track swings left. Reach a T junction with another track and turn right. Pass a lone house and ignore an immediate left. The track soon swings left and you follow it, ignoring a track right. Reach a fork and follow a yellow arrow right. The track climbs steeply and swings left. At a junction with a track heading off to the left and down, go right.

The track levels out and passes the site of the Temple of the Four Winds, which was a lodge built in 1910 by Viscount Pirrie. Continue on up and then down to a barrier at a 5 way junction. Ignoring a left turn and two forks right, go straight ahead and steeply up onto Gibbet Hill. There is a trig point here, also a memorial to a murdered sailor and splendid views. Go straight across and down onto the Quiet Lane, a metalled lane. Turn right to walk along it for about 0.75 miles to its end and then beyond. A lane merges in from the left. Either: (1) To see views down into the Devil’s Punchbowl, just beyond this point turn left up a track signed “Unsuitable for motor vehicles”. The Punchbowl will appear to your left. Jottings - your community noticeboard Jottings is your FREE community noticeboard for charities, local events, groups and information, compiled by Jane Gosnell. To feature, please email jottings@vantagepublishing.co.uk by the first Friday of the month prior to month of publication. Please note that space is limited and inclusion cannot be guaranteed. Autumn is well and truly upon us - I love this time of year. The trees across the UK look absolutely stunning - take a moment out of your busy day to walk amongst them. We have so many wonderful places to walk in this area including Winkworth Arboretum or perhaps visit another of the National Trust’s gardens? I’m looking forward to blackberry picking, making the odd apple crumble, Halloween and bonfire night! As ever, if you are looking to get out and about locally, there are many of suggestions in this month’s Jottings. Clandon Parks salvage collection Every Wednesday to Sunday until 28th October Previously unseen items go on display in this basement exhibition. Earlier this year, the National Trust opened the basement at Clandon Park to give visitors a chance to see some of the most fire-damaged spaces at the heart of this grand Palladian mansion. Now, a new selection of items from the house's salvaged collection are on display in the basement's exhibition space, showing an array of different objects rescued from the house in the months after the fire. The new basement walkway, which opened in May this year, takes visitors deep into the lowest and most fire-damaged spaces within the 18th century Palladian mansion. Singing for Wellbeing It is estimated that 2.8 million people are part of a choir in Great Britain. Less than a decade ago choirs were synonymous with Sunday morning hymns. Making music exercises the brain as well as the body. Singing increases endorphins and reduces your stress hormone acting as an effective pain relief and boost to your immune system. With World Mental Health day on the 10th October, it’s important to remember to look after your mental health. One easy way to do this is by joining a choir. Local mental health charity Oakleaf Enterprise has been encouraging their clients to do just that. Forming the Guildford based ‘Everyman Choir’ has given local men who are suffering with their mental wellbeing the opportunity to be a part of a fun, dynamic singing group. If

WIN... a 45 minute Energy Healing session or a House Energy Assessment Everything living possesses a Luminous Energy Field. South American indigenous medicine men and women developed practices based upon upgrading the quality of that field. Shamans tell people “we are our dreams, not our genes". If we don’t upgrade our luminous energy field, or don’t come up with new dreams/ideas to carry us forth in life, we keep replaying and repeating the past. We can modify our genetics through our energy field and therefore it is possible to switch on genes that create health. Sonia Fourie, a qualified Energy Medicine Practitioner, would like to share these incredible gifts with everyone. Sonia is offering one lucky individual or group either a 45-minute energy healing session, introductory house energy assessment, or talk. To win, please answer the following question: Q: What does everything living possess? Please enter online at www.vantagepointmag.co.uk by 31st October 2018.
