If you die without a Will the State has one for you. No LPA ? If you should suffer incapacity the State manages your affairs.

Lasting Powers of Attorney • Lasting powers of Attorney provide security during your lifetime. • Without LPAs even a joint bank account is frozen if illness or accident strikes. • They are probably the best insurance you will ever have • LPAs enable you to choose who will administer your affairs if you should suffer illness or accident. • Once illness or accident occurs it is often too late. • We should all have LPAs in place. Shaws Wills 3 We use plain English. 3 We let you have fixed costs in advance. 3 We have informal discussions with you. 3 All documents are completed in house and are confidential. 3 We give full advice about tax saving and how best to protect yourself and your family. 3 We do work outside normal office hours.

Wills  Rik Mayall, Bob Marley, Steig Larsson and Jill Dando all died without Wills. They did not expect to die !  Many people who should know better die without a Will causing tremendous expense hardship and often higher tax bills for their families.  Homemade Wills and cheap Wills provided without advice often cause shocking problems.  A well written Will should not need to be replaced unless family circumstances change. Have your family circumstances changed? Do you care about paying too much tax? Do you want to ensure that your children have an inheritance even if your surviving spouse remarries or you have to pay Care Fees? Are you a member of a ‘blended’ family? If you die without a Will strict rules apply • Under age children are the responsibility of the Local Authority. • Long term unmarried partners do not inherit. • If a person on means tested benefits inherits the benefits and social support are lost. • State distribution of your assets can cause family disputes as no regard is paid to what your wishes may have been. Having the right documents gives you peace of mind. Please phone Susan Shaw now.

Jeans made easy After many years of working with clients and their wardrobes, Kirstie has found jeans are pretty much top of the list of tricky! Some of the comments I received after the workshop:

I probably wear my jeans seventy-five percent of the time by default, picking them up to wear with a shirt or smarter jacket as my go to ‘easy peasy’ look. I’m comfortable and feel at home in this look (even though it’s not always easy, being pear shaped). I started my Jeans Workshops earlier in the year to make the process of trying on jeans as easy as possible. It is a session to try on High Street and designer brands, both low and high prices to get an idea of the difference in quality and fit. Is it worth spending Add a tailored jacket for stronger shoulders, above or as Rosie Hun£100 or just as good with a £30 pair? From experience I know the only answer is to try on and see. There have been numerous articles on denim this year and when someone raves about a certain brand, I know that it may have been a perfect fit on that person but not on everyone. In essence there are no short cuts, just try on as many different brands as you can before you decide.

tington-Whiteley below.

‘It was relaxed and great fun, and I got fabulous jeans out of it too. Definitely recommend it for anyone who needs help finding the right thing or is simply short of time to trawl through the millions of options out there!”

Jeans Questionnaire I would love to know more from you about your relationship with Jeans: • How often a week do you wear jeans? • What are your main issues with finding a great pair? • Have you found a successful brand for your body shape? • How much are you happy to pay? • Do you find the sizing tricky?

“muffin top and around the sides” “…jeans with a huge amount of Lycra, as I feel constricted” “baggy bum after few wearings” “too skinny jeans highlight my lower legs”.

Maybe you don’t wear them at all, tell me about it?

I am sure these points resonate with women everywhere, as jeans are a worldwide wardrobe basic.

8

“It was good to try on some new styles and helpful to have tops and jackets to style the jeans with.”

Please see below for the workshops I will be holding in September.

I like to find out fit issues and problem areas before we start; here are some examples:

So with these comments in mind before my sessions begin, I collect jeans from a mixture of sizes from a selection of brands. I choose a collection of t-shirts, shirts and jackets to offer easy wearable layers to keep casual or to dress up for smart casual. I also include inspiring accessories to finish off the look and get the proportions right.

“I really enjoyed the chance to try on different styles and makes all in one place and try things I wouldn’t necessarily pick out. Your approach of gentle guidance was perfect.”

FASHION White tops it A white shirt suits the jeans look, but play with proportions. Oversized with skinny, shown by actress, Olivia Palermo. Cropped with high waisted. Or classic button up with a wider ankle length, shown by creative, Linda V Wright.

Add a heel Its fun to work the boy girl look with a heel or wedge. Roll up slim legs to show an ankle with a heel. If you dare to flare, wear high wedges for flattering proportions. Boyfriend jeans look best with a feminine heel for a smart casual look, but trainers rule for everyday.

Colour addition The neutral shades of denim can take a colour. Add a bright shoe for one area of impact. Look out for the new trend of embroidery and patches (or add your own) Add a bright scarf to lift muted tones

Summer Holiday Fun for Everyone

How’s your summer going? Got a spreadsheet of activities planned or are the long lazy days stretching out in front of you starting to worry you yet? Laura Sands is here to help... It’s OK. They freaked me out as well. The incredible potential of the summer holidays that we all felt as children have a different tone when you’re a parent. Another four or five weeks of children lolling around your house, eating through your cupboards like a hoard of locusts, creating mess and claiming they’re bored is, shall we say challenging for us parents. And if you’re helping out other parents who are working over the summer months – either as a grandparent or family friend – then you feel the pressure even more. However, the lovely folk at VantagePoint magazine asked me to do some research on things to keep the nippers occupied over the coming weeks. There’s so much to do in this part of the world; we really are blessed. But it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the idea that you have to travel into London or head down to the coast to have a good day out. That just isn’t the case. But before we go any further – metaphorically or otherwise, here are the three must-dos for a successful day out with kids. 1. Take your own lunch. It doesn’t need to be an elaborate picnic. Sandwiches, fruit and some refillable bottles of water will do the job. You save time queuing up for expensive and possibly mediocre food that the 14

kids probably won’t eat anyway. And even better, you can eat when you want – sandwiches at 10.45 anyone? 2. As well as sun cream and sun hats, bring spare clothes, a damp facecloth in a small plastic bag and a towel. No matter where we go, one of my kids manages to get soaked through, covered in mud or something unspeakable, so the towel and spare outfit are always useful. And somehow a damp facecloth seems able to do the job of 20 wet-wipes when it comes to cleaning up muddy legs or sticky fingers. 3. Remind yourself of what to do in the event of a wasp or bee sting. Don’t let the little blighters ruin your day out. Plasters, antiseptic cream and an insect sting cream are day out essentials. So, onto the things to do. Because this time of year can get expensive (ice lollies don’t grow on trees after all), I’ve grouped the ideas into a spread of No-Cost, LowCost and Big Day Out ideas. I’ve tried to leave out the more obvious attractions and focus on things you’ve perhaps not done before or haven’t considered.

Keep your wallet shut with these No-Cost activities Free entry, limited distance to travel, but possible car parking charges apply if you drive. Given half the chance, most kids love the opportunity

of getting filthy dirty and spending lots of time outside. So get dressed in your oldest clothes, and head for the nearest wood, common or stream. If you have young children, then they’ll love recreating the children’s rhyme ‘Going On A Bear Hunt’. Or why not see if you can find a Gruffalo in your local woods? Older children will be fascinated and educated by a morning of Geocaching or wildlife spotting. Find out more about Geocaching on www.geocaching.com, and download a wildlife spotting app or dig out a book to help with learning more about our beautiful countryside. Summer holidays are made for den building, pooh sticks, cloud watching, wild swimming, flying a kite and messing about in the woods… embrace this beautiful part of the world in which we live and help your children appreciate it as well. Pass older children an Ordnance Survey map or get them onto Google maps so they can research places to visit. You may well find they come up with some completely new ideas. Good places to head to include Witley Common, the Frensham ponds, the area around Leith Hill, and the Devil’s Punchbowl.

For a slight change to the ordinary, download the Surrey Cow Parade app (www.cowparadesurreyhills. com), and set yourselves a challenge of visiting as many of the intriguingly decorated cows that are placed around the Surrey Hills as you can. You’ll visit new places, be inspired by the diversity of art on show and learn about the causes being supported by this fun initiative. Perfect for a free activity! If the weather’s less than kind, then reacquaint yourselves with your local library, museum or heritage trails. There are local museums in most towns across the area. Guildford, Haslemere, Dorking, Farnham , Midhurst and Godalming all have a museum where you can learn more about our local history. Most have holiday activities planned, so look up what’s on and take your pick. Check out www.surreymuseums. org.uk and www.sussexmuseums.co.uk. Or why not pull on your backpacks and spend a pleasant day pretending to be tourists in Guildford? With a museum, a castle, medieval undercroft, a beautiful cathedral and stunning river, there’s plenty to keep a family occupied and entertained for almost no cost at all. Older children and teenagers would get something out of one of the free Guildford walking tours. Take a look at www. guildfordwalks.org.uk to check out what’s on offer.

Low Cost Wonders

For a small cost – maximum cost at £30 for an adult and two children. Most cost considerably less. Car parking costs may apply and are not accounted for. Stimulate your children’s senses with a day out at one of the beautiful and interesting National Trust locations across Surrey and Hampshire. You can easily while away an entire day at one of their larger estates.

In which case head off to a pick-your-own farm and act like the Hungry Caterpillar with more fruit and veg than you can eat. Secretts in Milford is perfectly set up for this, with expansive fields of fruit, vegetables and flower, a café and toilet facilities. After you’ve spent the morning collecting your harvest, then spend a busy afternoon podding peas, stringing currants and hulling strawberries. Most kids love to help with food preparation, especially if it’s something they’ve picked themselves. You might even get them to try something new. And what should you do with all that produce? Why not make some jams or pickles? The internet and library will be able to help you with recipes and you can get jam jars from Lakeland or Robert Dyas if you don’t have any knocking around at home. www.secretts.co.uk Don’t forget about the activities that local businesses and attractions offer at this time of year. Yes, you did hear right… Woking is home to two of the most progressive recent attractions, The Lightbox and the WWF Living Planet Centre. They’re just 5 minutes’ walk from Woking train station and have many exhibitions and events on across the summer. They prefer visitors to take the train to support their environmental stance. Why not spend a day at Busbridge Lakes Waterfowl and Gardens, which is next open August 21st to 29th (inc) from 10.30am to 5.30pm. It is situated just 1.5 miles from Godalming on the Hambledon Road (off the B2130). There is plenty to see and explore in the 40 acre grounds; nature trails, three lakes, old and specimen trees, caves, follies and grottos. You can walk among many of the 100 different species of ornamental waterfowl, pheasants, cranes, peafowl and many other birds from all over the world. For the children there are swan cygnets, goslings and plenty of ducklings and chicks. Take a picnic, as there are plenty of beautiful spots to spread a rug and enjoy the tranquillity of the park. A new addition to the grounds is the Wallaby Walk, which is home to four young Bennett’s Joeys and a pair of young East African Crowned Cranes, which were reared in 2014 at Busbridge Lakes. In addition to the ornamental fowl the gardens are home to owls, kingfishers, heron and many smaller wild birds, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, tree-creepers and all the usual garden birds. The lakes are full of giant pike and carp and the banks abound with dragon fly, butterfly, frogs and toads. www.busbridgelakes.co.uk. For sports fans, Go Fest returns to the Surrey Sports Park Guildford on 13th and 14th August. This exciting sporting event is great for families and a wonderful opportunity for children of all ages and abilities to try many different sports such as free running, cricket, archery tag, trampling, korfball, judo, paddle boarding, musical theatre, nerf wars and much more. There will also be live Olympic coverage on giant screens, music tents a chance to meet some sporting heroes as well as all the usual facilities that the Sports Park has to offer. Well worth a visit. www.gofest.co.uk.

Watts Gallery in Compton offers Watts at Dusk every last Friday of the month. It is open to 9pm and children 16 and under go free. There is also 2 for 1 adult entry. On the 26th August, you can be inspired by Mary Watts’ collaborative approach to making the monumental Watts Chapel. See demonstrations of decorative techniques using gesso and hear from Mary Watts’ recently transcribed diaries. Get involved in a grand scale collaborative Make! with artist Louise ScillitoeBrown and listen to the sounds of big band Junction 4. www.wattsgallery.org.uk.

For a Grand Day Out It wouldn’t be the summer holidays without at least one big day out. You could of course cough up and go to the big ones – Chessington, Paultons, Thorpe Park and Legoland; the kids will adore it, especially if they’re older and able to go on all of the rides. On a rainy day, visits to the cinema, iceskating and bowling go down well, particularly if paired up with a visit to Pizza Express afterwards. For all of these, you can, and absolutely should look out for vouchers to reduce the price of your tickets. Don’t pay full price if you can help it: pre-book your tickets online to save money and time when you get to the gate, and download vouchers for money-off meals at chain restaurants. – Godstone, Bocketts, Fishers Farm and Hobbledown are all guarantees for a great day out with plenty to do for all ages. And remember the zoo. Marwell Zoo, Birdworld and Drusillas are well set up for lots of holiday fun. Did you know that you can also go to Butlins in Bognor for the day? Something a bit different is a visit to Denbies Vineyard in Dorking, where you can do an outdoor tractor tour and parents can enjoy a tasting of wines from Britain’s largest vineyard. For something a little more involved and imaginative, then pack up and head off to the incredible Arundel Castle. Spark your kids’ imaginations with the towering turrets, spooky tunnels and expansive grounds. The similarity of the town’s name to the country in which two certain Disney heroines live won’t go unnoticed by little girls, but it’s a splendid location for a day out for anyone. This medieval castle and stately home is the family home of the Duke of Norfolk and is an inspiration for anyone, especially children with a fancy for the fantastical and historical. The tiered ticket option means you can limit yourself to the castle grounds and chapel alone (which really is plenty if it’s a sunny day), or you can choose to visit parts of the castle with options including the keep, the castle rooms and the castle bedrooms. There are also a number of summer events taking place on site. Whichever ticket you choose, you can recharge in the impressive castle restaurant – which used to be the servants’ hall. And if you finish your day there with time to spare, then you’re just a few miles from the coast; perfect for

dipping your toes in the sea and enjoying a fish and chip supper. www.arundelcastle.org How about unleashing excess energy and bravery on a high ropes adventure trail? Great for challenging your kids both physically and mentally, children as young as 6 can take part in the adventure trails at Go Ape (Alice Holt, Farnham), or Wild Wood (Stoke Park, Guildford). If your children are young, then you should be prepared to take part as well (or find a willing substitute) as both locations insist that small children are accompanied. This does push up the cost of the activity (you’re paying for an extra ticket), but your kids will probably like nothing better than seeing their “infallible” parents struggling up a rope ladder; they’ll have material for Sunday lunch amusement for years to come. www.goape.co.uk, www.wildwood-adventure.com And remember sometimes the nicest thing to do is absolutely nothing. And that goes for you too. Call a halt to the chores, turn off the WiFi and sit and chill out as a family. Play Uno, build Lego together or bake flapjacks and then eat them all in one go. Enjoy the summer holidays for what they are: a chance to recharge and reconnect before the chaos of September arrives in full force. A day of fizz and fun in the

Surrey Hills

Dani Maimone enjoys a local sparkling wine tour There’s nothing quite like a glass of something sparkling to make an occasion feel special. As a former professional hot air balloon pilot, I have been used to opening a bottle of Champagne after every passenger flight as part of the ballooning experience. It is in part through ballooning that I have been fortunate enough to visit several well-known Champagne houses such as Moët & Chandon, Bollinger and the iconic Veuve Clicquot as well as several smaller artisan houses. So it was with great interest that I prepared to embark on a journey around some of Surrey’s vineyards where English sparkling wine is being produced and now winning international awards. Mike Keeble, an accountant from Shere, recently returned from a trip to Champagne with a light bulb moment. Realising that our UK sparkling wines are gaining pride of place on the world stage and that some of the vineyards producing them were literally on his doorstep, he thought it would be a great idea to set up sparkling wine tours in Surrey. Why travel to France when some of the best vineyards are right here? Mike said: “It’s only fairly recently that UK sparkling wines have been considered a true threat to the market place but now even the famous Champagne houses are taking notice. You know our wines are being taking seriously when famous French names such as Taittinger start buying land and planting up vineyards in the UK with a multi-million pound investment and a plan to produce high quality English sparkling wine“.

Of course, you can’t call it Champagne, unless it has been produced in that region and uisng their method. Having said that, the method, something that is explained to us at our first port of call, Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, is a carefully crafted science that has been used for several hundred years and many wineries outside the Champagne region are now using it to create fabulous effervescent varieties of their own. Denbies, a former pig and cattle farm located in the Surrey Hills, within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), was set up by Sir Adrian White. It is now managed by his son Christopher and is currently the largest vineyard in the UK boasting 265 acres of vines. Denbies won a total of 29 medals at international awards this year including a gold from the International Wine Challenge for its sparkling Greenfields Cuvée NV. A poignant win, as not only was Greenfields the first sparkling wine to be made at Denbies (originally labelled as Classic Cuvée), but the vineyard is also celebrating its 30th anniversary. On our arrival at Denbies we were greeted by a glass of their award-winning sparkling wine and welcomed by the knowledgeable Anne Denny, Front of House and Tours Manager. A brief video detailing the history of the vineyard sets the scene for a walking tour of the winery and a trip to the cellars. It was here that Anne produced the bottles for our tasting, all set on a large wooden table in front of beautifully carved oak caskets carefully crafted from trees that were blown down in the great storm of 1987. It was fascinating to hear that when frost threatens the vines, a large industrial propane burner is used to heat the air around them. I tried to envisage 20 or so hot air balloons all

We tasted their delicious award celebration vintage and it was no surprise to learn that their 2009 Succession Cuvée won three international wine awards in 2015, two golds and a bronze. This is one of only seven English sparkling wines to achieve this, not bad for a one-acre plot and a man who went back to ‘school’ as a mature student to study the art of viticulture and oenology, gaining a BSc Hons degree in the process. From the ‘Quintessence’ of High Clandon to a quintessential British pub, The Queens Head in West Clandon for a pleasant and relaxed lunch stop. Mike regales us with information about the future of sparkling wine in this country and how climate change is having a detrimental impact on the Champagne region. The future is certainly looking rosy or could that be rosé for the UK’s wine industry. Our next stop was Albury Vineyard that uses a mixture of organic and biodynamic practices to produce their variety of still and sparkling wines. We all understood the organic aspect but the practice of burying cow horns stuffed with dung from lactating organic cows which later gets dug up and used to spray on to the vines, did seem a little, well, bonkers. It was when Nick Wenman, the owner, explained it further that it made more sense. He described it as “an holistic approach, which harmonises nature’s elemental forces of the earth (the soil), water (the vines), air (the weather) and fire (the sun) and also recognises that the phases of the moon have a significant influence on plants”.

lined up with their burners going as a possible alternative, but I digress. It was a great insight into how the largest vineyard in the UK operates and an education about the terroir, in other words the soil, climate geology and viticulture, that help to create the taste of the wines. It appears that parts of Surrey have the perfect chalk soil and geology similar to the Champagne region, hence the success with grape growing in the area. From the largest vineyard we made our way to one of the smallest vineyards in Surrey, a tiny, one-acre plot of land with a view to die for that is High Clandon. This tiny, Mike calls it ‘boutique’ vineyard, is managed by Bruce and Sibylla Tindale. They welcomed us into their home and proudly invited us to tour their delightful vineyard which is past a wildflower meadow, flanked by a bed of beautiful roses and set on a southfacing slope. Sibylla tells us that she can taste a hint of rose in the wine which is made from a special mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, the classic combination for sparkling wines and Champagne. This charming couple delight in sharing their story and their passion for what they are doing shines through. They started planting the vines in 2004 and bottled their first wines four years later. August 2016

Apparently some 500 vineyards around the world use biodymanics and have done for many years, so clearly what’s good enough for them is good enough for Albury and clearly hasn’t stopped Nick and his manager Alex Valescchi producing award winning wines. What I can add to this is that the resulting wines produced using these methods do taste delicious, as we found out on our tour. We ended our trip with a whistle stop tour of Silent Pool Gin Distillery. Rude not to really as it is literally next-door to Albury Vineyard. This distillery is yet another success story, owned by Ian McCulloch and far exceeding its predictions of producing 4,000 bottles in its first year to 45,000 and that number is growing, such is its popularity. I would like to say a huge thank you to Mike and English Sparkling Wine Tours for this thoroughly enjoyable day out. I got to meet some lovely people and learnt so much about the UK industry and the fascinating world of viticulture, too much to condense in to this article. If you are looking for something that is that extra bit special for a small corporate group of say 10-15 people, life celebration or friends day out then at £145 per person this won’t break the bank. Wings Wheels 2016 The sensational summer event for the whole family, Wings & Wheels, returns on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey (home to BBC’s Top Gear) to celebrate its twelfth show. Famous favourites in the air and on the ground will blow your mind, whilst the attractions and Zones in the Arena will keep you entertained and buzzing with delight the whole weekend.

Eyes to the sky as the ‘Wings’ of the event treats visitors to outstanding and diverse 5 hour air displays which have previously included show favourites the Red Arrows, Typhoon, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Spitfire, Lancaster, Hurricane), Tucano, Tutor, Apache Attack Helicopter, Team Breitling Wingwalkers, Glider FX and the Blades accompanied by witty and knowledgeable commentary from aviation experts and display pilots. The ‘Wings’ of the event would not be complete without a close-up inspection of all the weekend’s visiting aircraft and Dunsfold’s resident Boeing 747 in the ‘Wings Park’ (open for tours). You don’t need to be a petrolhead to delight in the ‘Wheels’ of the show as the paddock gleams and the sound of finely tuned engines fill the air. Supercars and classic and vintage icons put on an awe-inspiring display of power and speed on the Top Gear track in a 2 hour auto spectacular from Brooklands Museum. Included among the 400 entrants in 2015 were Porsche 911, Dodge Monaco, TVR Tasmin 280i, Ducati Mutistrada 1200s, Ferrari F355 Berlinetta, Ford GT40 and Lotus Elise 49. The Wheels Zone features interactive displays from clubs and a crowd line parade whilst the Stunt Zone squeals with the sound of two and four wheeled hair-raising performances. The Military Zone & Parade adds some classic nostalgia to the ‘Wheels’, as the regal Military Vehicles complete a cavalcade for spectators before taking their place in the Zone’s living history and re-enactment displays including simulated live battles and tank rides. The excitement and anticipation

doesn’t stop at the main displays as the 32 acre public arena is bursting with a huge variety of interactive attractions containing all you need for a great family day out. The show arena also boasts laser quest, paintballing, kit-plane demonstrations, aviation and motoring simulators, military outlets and displays, static aircraft, fairground, emergency services demonstration and over 80 retail outlets selling a wide variety of products and gifts. As the last plane touches down the party starts across the arena with a mix of musical evening entertainment. Taking the hassle out of your day the show includes added extras to make your experience even more enjoyable; over 25 fixed-price catering outlets, two bars, hospitality facilities, free on-site parking, public camping, lost children point, disabled access, informative show commentary, opportunities to meet the pilots, a raffle, official show merchandise and grandstand seating. The twelfth annual Wings & Wheels will be held over the August Bank holiday weekend; Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August, at Dunsfold Park near Guildford and is open to spectators from 9am until 9pm. Tickets start from £22 for adults, £50 for a family (2 adults and 3 children aged 5-15yrs), £7 for children aged between 5 and 15yrs and under 5s are free. Careful of Holidays!

Finally, summer is coming and you may have holidays planned. Sunny days tempt us outdoors for long sedentary periods, leaving routines behind. For those already experiencing back and neck pain, going away can mean trouble! Here are a few helpful tips from Mike Stockbridge, Doctor of Chiropractic at Elstead Chiropractic Pack for success! • Choose suitcases wisely, buying the lightest wheeled case possible. Even hard cases can weigh a lot empty! • If possible, take two suitcases to distribute weight evenly. • Soft bags should have long shoulder straps, enabling wear across the body to distribute weight. • Many wheeled bags encourage you to twist the upper body/back while pulling. Push the case ahead of you instead. • Tiredness increases chances of injury, so ensure sufficient sleep prior to travelling and avoid rushing. Flying? • Drink plenty of water during the flight and avoid alcohol which can cause dehydration and aggravate muscle pain. • While restricted to your seat do shoulder shrugs, buttock clenches and foot circles, and get up and move around. Arriving at the airport • Avoid travellators and walk through the terminal to get joints moving quickly. • Mark your bags, to avoid mistakenly lifting other people’s heavy cases off the carousel. • Unless your cases don’t have wheels, don’t use airport trolleys, which can jerk and pull on your back. • When lifting cases into your car, minimise twisting your body and activate abdominal muscles by pulling in the navel. Driving to your destination? • Poor driving posture causes or aggravates back problems. Whether in your own car or a hire car, ensure the seat position is slightly backwards and feels natural, with elbows at a comfortable, relaxed angle. Raise the seat so your hips are above your knees. • Stop and stretch at least every two hours. • While stuck in traffic, exercise in your seat: try the exercises mentioned above. When you arrive • If your bed is too hard, ask hotel staff for a spare duvet/blanket to put on the mattress. It is easier to

26

• • •

soften a hard bed than make a soft bed harder. If it is too soft, try turning the mattress over. Do the pillows allow your head to stay in alignment with the rest of your body and mould to your head and neck shape? Ask to change pillows if unhappy. Ideally take your normal pillow with you by using compacting vacuum bags. Avoid lying on your tummy with your back and neck arched back when reading; put reading matter on the floor and view it over the edge of the sun bed. Rolled up towels make good lumbar or neck support. If exercising, ensure you have a full induction to the hotel gym.

Do you suffer? If anxiety, insomnia, IBS, or flying phobias affect you, consider hypnotherapy. This may reduce the need for medical intervention, making your whole holiday experience more pleasurable.

GARDENING

With Beth Otway

Rhododendron Gold for local nursery beauty of these special plants. One side of the exhibit featured Rhododendrons that were popular 100 years ago. These plants are old favourites, but as they tend to be taller, larger, and more imposing plants, sadly not everyone can accommodate them in today’s smaller gardens. The other side of the exhibit featured smaller, more compact plants, including some of the newest varieties of Rhododendrons and Azaleas, which have been specially bred to be suitable for today’s smaller gardens but retain the charm and beauty of the original varieties.

On 23rd May 1916, the Rhododendron Society held their first AGM at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Since that first AGM, a hundred years have passed, during which time the Rhododendron Society has evolved and its horticultural interests widened. It is now known as the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group (RCMG). To celebrate the Centenary, David Millais, the current Chairman of the RCMG, and owner of Millais Nurseries in Churt near Farnham (who is also the great nephew of J G Millais, one of the founder members of the Rhododendron Society), created a special exhibit at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show to mark the occasion. The Millais Nurseries exhibit was awarded a Gold Medal by the RHS judges. Every exhibit that Millais Nurseries create is different. This year their Gold Medal winning exhibit for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show featured a ‘walk through’ display of Rhododendrons and Azaleas, which encouraged visitors to take in the scent and the

Three new Rhododendrons launched by Millais Nurseries at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show were entered into the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year Competition. All three plants were shortlisted in the top twenty new plants of the competition, and all three finished within the top ten. Rhododendron ‘Orakel’ was bred in Germany by Holger Hachmann. This new, resilient Rhododendron is hardy to -24C. During late May and early June Rhododendron ‘Orakel’ produces dark purple flowers, which feature a distinctive, blackberry coloured blotch. David Millais believes this new variety to be one of the best purple Rhododendrons he’s ever seen. It grows to a height of 150cm-175cm (5ft-6ft) after ten years. Rhododendron ‘Orakel’ will be happiest when planted in moist, acid soil, or good quality ericaceous compost, in dappled shade. No pruning is necessary, simply deadhead when the flowers have gone over. Apply fertiliser in March each year, and again after flowering. Rhododendron ‘Prinses Maxima’ was bred by Tijs Huisman, and named after Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti, the Dutch princess, who married the Crown Prince of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander, who is now the King of the Netherlands. This new Rhododendron has a very complicated parentage as a number of different Rhododendron varieties were crossed to create this special plant. This Images clockwise from top left: Rhododendron ‘Orakel’; David Millais with his Gold Medal, in front of Millais Nurseries exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016; Rhododendron ‘Sun Star’; one of the three new Rhododendrons launched by Millais Nurseries at the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show – Rhododendron ‘Prinses Maxima’

complex breeding programme resulted in creating a new Rhododendron that produces very beautiful, cream coloured flowers, which feature a prominent red spotting over the lobes of its double flowers. Rhododendron ‘Prinses Maxima’ flowers in mid-May; its flowers are both distinctive and unusual. Rhododendron ‘Prinses Maxima’ is hardy down to -20C. This Rhododendron has an upright habit and you can expect its height to be 150cm-175cm (5ft-6ft) after ten years of growth. Plant Rhododendron ‘Prinses Maxima’ in dappled shade, in moist acid soil or good quality ericaceous compost. No pruning is necessary, simply deadhead when the flowers have finished. Apply fertiliser in March each year, and again after flowering. Rhododendron ‘Sun Star’ is a deciduous azalea, again bred in Holland, by Tijs Huisman using seeds from Fred Minch from the USA, the resulting plants of which, were then crossed to create this new Rhododendron luteum cross. This new azalea produces fragrant, double flowers in May. The flowers start life as dark, salmon pink buds, which then open to yellow flowers, which then fade to a soft orange colour as they age. Rhododendron ‘Sun Star’ is hardy down to -20C; this new azalea is happiest growing in a sunny spot, in moist acid soil, or good quality ericaceous compost. Apply fertiliser in March every year, and again after flowering. When the flowers have finished it’s the ideal time to trim the plant, to maintain its

shape. Rhododendron ‘Sun Star’ is a deciduous plant and in autumn the foliage turns an attractive pinky-red colour. Its height grows to 150cm-175cm (5ft-6ft) after ten years’ growth. Millais Nurseries’ Chelsea Flower Show exhibit featured the top Rhododendron, as voted for by the members of the RCMG. The winner of the vote was Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Koichiro Wada’, a much-admired, low growing Rhododendron that’s generally accepted to be the best form of yakushimanum. Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Koichiro Wada’ produces pretty, apple blossom coloured, bell-shaped flowers in May, it has a noticeable white, felt-like covering over the surface of its leaves, which is known as tomentum. During Her Majesty’s visit to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, David presented the Queen with a beautiful bouquet of Rhododendrons created by Miranda Gunn, and gathered from Ramster Gardens in Chiddingfold. Miranda is the owner of Ramster Gardens and is also a member of the RCMG. David told me that the Queen had commented on how she loved Rhododendrons, and that she particularly liked the big blooms that reminded her so much of her childhood. With an emotive reason for a display - the centenary of the Society, with such strong connections to his family, and of which he is Chairman - it was a special time for David Millais, and everyone at Millais Nurseries. I enjoyed catching up with

Kickstart Football Academy Professional football coaching for boys and girls at Surrey Sports Park The Kickstart Academy was established in 2014 by Jack Sollis, and provides professional coaching to boys and girls who have potential to develop and benefit from a higher technical level of coaching. They aim to fill the gap between the grass roots game and the academies run by professional clubs where places are limited, there is fierce competition and there is huge pressure on children to perform. “We have an incredible amount of footballing talent in England but we are poor at identifying and developing that talent.” says Jack Sollis. “Children grow and develop at different ages. Jamie Vardy is the latest example of a player defying the odds, having been rejected by clubs because he was too small. I’m not sure the scouting system is working efficiently, talent is being missed or rejected and children with incredible ability are slipping through the net”. Kickstart Football Academy work in close conjunction with local grass roots clubs who encourage their more able players to join to benefit from additional training.

others of equal ability which helps them be the best they can be.” Kickstart have separate boys and girls academies for children between the ages of 7 and 17. Coaching takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5pm to 6.30pm from September through to the end of July on the 3G pitch at Surrey Sports Park (behind Starbucks), Guildford. Parents can also take advantage of the facilities or watch training over a coffee. “We are incredibly proud to be based at Surrey Sports Park, it has amazing state-of-the-art facilities.” continues Jack. If your child wants a chance to develop and showcase their talent, why not apply for a trial at hello@kickstartcoaching-uk.com. There are no joining fees and payment for the coaching is on a termly basis. Quote VantagePoint and, subject to a successful trial, receive two free training sessions.

Do you want to join a Football Academy?

“Players who shine within the grass roots scene now have a fabulous platform upon which to develop their skills without having to stop playing for their local teams” says Jack Sollis the founder of Kickstart. “We want children to maximise their footballing potential free from the pressures and expectations which exist within the professional club academy setups. Not all players who play for our academy aspire to become professional players but here they get to play alongside

Roasted Tomato, Basil and Parmesan Quiche

4. Mix the eggs, milk, parmesan and basil, season with salt and pepper. 5. Layer 2/3 of the cheese on the bottom of the pastry case, then layer in the tomatoes and onions. Pour over the egg mix and sprinkle on the remaining cheese. 6. Bake for 10 mins, then reduce the temperature to 180c/160fan/gas 4 and bake for a further 15 – 20 minutes or until the filling is puffed up and golden brown. Scatter with a few whole basil leaves and serve warm.

Creamy Beef and Mustard pasta

Quiche is a summertime favourite, served at parties, BBQ’s and as a light supper. This recipe uses the finest cheese and milk from Goodwood estate, Rookery Farm organic eggs and lovely fresh organic tomatoes. We used large tomatoes but cherry tomatoes work well too. Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil; 1 onion, finely sliced; 2 large tomatoes, sliced thinly or 300g cherry tomatoes; 3 eggs, beaten; 125ml milk; 2 tbsp parmesan, grated; 125g strong cheddar; 3 tbsp fresh basil, chopped.

This is a quick and easy supper dish, ideal for cooler summer evenings. We have used local, organic Aberdeen Angus beef from Rother Valley Organics and rich organic double cream from Goodwood estate.

Pastry

Ingredients

280g plain flour; 140g salted butter, cubed; water to bind.

500g frying steak, cut into thin strips; 250ml double cream; 1 onion, finely chopped; 1 garlic clove, finely chopped; 100g mushrooms, quartered; 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard; mixed herbs, fresh, chopped or dried; 300g spaghetti or pasta shapes of your choice.

Serves 8 Method: 1. Start by making the pastry. Put the flour and butter in a processor and combine until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Slowly add a tablespoon of water at a time until it all comes together into a ball. 2. Roll into a round to line a 25cm flan tin, prick the base and line with parchment and baking beans. Bake blind for 10-15 mins, then remove the baking beans and parchment and return to the oven for another 5-10 mins (it should be slightly browned). 3. Preheat oven 200c/180c fan/gas 6. Grease a baking tray with olive oil and lay on the tomato and onions slices. Drizzle with a little more olive oil and roast in the oven for 15-20 mins.

36

Serves 4 Method: 1. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions. 2. Fry the onion for 2 minutes and then add the garlic, beef, mushrooms and mixed herbs. Continue to cook until the beef has browned, then add the cream and mustard. 3. Bring to the boil and cook for a few minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly. 4. Serve with the cooked pasta.

RECIPES Vegetable Lasagne

cover the lasagne sheets with the white sauce. 6. Sprinkle with grated cheese and bake in the oven for 40 minutes, and the top is nice and brown and bubbling.

Soda Bread

Although this can take a while to prepare, it is well worth the effort. Using lots of flavoursome organic vegetables, served with homemade Soda bread and a light green salad, it’s a sure fire hit with the whole family. Ingredients 2 aubergines cut into chunks; 2-3 courgettes cut into thick rings; 1-2 red peppers, chopped; 1 large red onion, cut into wedges; 1 -2 garlic cloves, sliced; 2 tbsp olive oil; Lasagne sheets; 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes; 1 jar Arnold’s Pasta et More Basil Infusion 450ml white sauce; grated cheese to sprinkle on top. Serves 8 Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 180c/160cfan/gas 4. 2. Place all the vegetables in a roasting tin and toss in the olive oil so they are nicely coated. Sprinkle over some dried mixed herbs and roast until tender, about 20 mins. 3. Mix the tinned tomatoes with the Pasta et More and a little water if too thick. 4. If making the white sauce, melt 25g butter in a saucepan and the add 25g of plain flour. Cook for 2-3 mins minutes and then remove from the heat and gradually stir in a pint of milk a little bit at a time. Return to the heat and bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Turn down the heat and simmer until thickened, stirring occasionally. If you prefer a cheese sauce add 2 tblsp grated parmesan. 5. In a deep lasagne dish, layer half the vegetables and pour over half the tomato sauce, cover with a layer of lasagne sheets, repeat for a second layer and then

Soda bread is quick and easy to make, filling and tasty. It tastes wonderful spread with butter and jam whilst still warm from the oven but goes just as well with soups and main dishes. Ingredients 400g strong plain flour; 50g porridge oats; 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda; 1 tsp sugar; 1 tsp salt; 350ml buttermilk; 1 egg, beaten. Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 230c/210c fan/ gas 8. 2. In a large bowl vigorously stir together the dry ingredients. 3. In a jug, mix the egg with the buttermilk. 4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and pour in the milk and egg mixture. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the buttermilk until just combined. Do not over mix. 5. With floured hands, gently shape the dough into a mound shape and place on a greased baking sheet. Score a cross on the top making 2.5cm deep cuts. 6. Bake in hot oven for 15 minutes then reduce the temperature to 200c/180c fan/gas 6 for 25 minutes more. 7. To test the bread, tap the bottom to see if it sounds hollow. If it is, remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack. If not, turn it upside down and return to the oven for another 5 mins and then test again.

The course will be held every Thursday evening from 7pm until 9pm. and will start on 8th September. A degree of knowledge of German and an ability to converse in basic language would be appropriate for the conversation group, but fluency is not necessary. The Ride & Stride Wednesday 10th September Surrey Churches Preservation Trust gives grants to churches that need repair. The bulk of the funds are raised by the sponsored ‘Ride and Stride’ which takes place on the second Saturday in September – September 10th this year. The idea is that cyclists and walkers get sponsorship for going round local churches. They have an enjoyable tour and their church benefits as well – because half the money raised comes back to their church and the other half goes to the SCPT for their grant making work. So here are three ways you can help: Have a go yourself and raise sponsorship of your own (forms and list of churches on www.surreychurchespreservationtrust.org). Sponsor

ARTS Is This the World’s Most Popular Symphony of All Time? Conductor Howard Shelley OBE – Courtesy Juliusz Multarzynski

for young concert artists at the London Arts Club in 2014 and has already starred at an exclusive Friends of Grayshott Concerts Evening in 2015. Yoon-Kyung graduated at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. This famous school was founded in 1924 as successor to the National Conservatory of Music of America where, as Director, Antonin Dvorak wrote his celebrated New World Symphony in 1893. The concert, starting at 7.30pm, gets off to a rousing start with Weber’s ‘Freischutz Overture’.

Village concert promoters, the ambitious Grayshott Concerts, certainly think so. And with tickets well on the way to selling out, many classical music fans are convinced they are right. Millions can hum the tunes of this glorious work which was chosen as the recording taken by astronaut Neil Armstrong to the moon aboard Apollo 11 in 1969. Many will associate the melodies with a popular TV ad in the 70’s – with a young boy struggling uphill on a bicycle delivering wholemeal loaves. So on Friday 23rd September, Grayshott Concerts will stage their biggest challenge ever – a performance of Dvorak’s emotive New World Symphony. Used to ‘pushing the boundaries’, organisers say this will be Grayshott’s largest ever orchestra to perform at St Luke’s Church. Numbering almost 40 musicians, the famous London Mozart Players, Grayshott Concerts Orchestra-in-residence, will be conducted by Howard Shelley OBE, Grayshott’s Associate Artist. Mr Shelley appears regularly on Radio3, ClassicFm and the world’s major concert halls, both as solo pianist and conductor.

Grayshott Concerts next event is second only in popularity to Mozart’s ‘Requiem’, his ‘Great Mass in C Minor’, on Saturday 19th November. Returning to Grayshott is one of London’s most successful amateur choirs, Pegasus, accompanied by the London Handel Orchestra and conducted by Adrian Butterfield, a world authority on period stringed instruments. Friends of Grayshott Concerts can book tickets at any time, while general booking for Dvorak opens on 31st July 2016 at www.grayshottconcerts.co.uk or by phone on 01428 606666. Pre-Concert Suppers at Applegarth Restaurant are available for both events through Grayshott Concerts.

This event raised over £3000 last year during their full day of bridge, playing in ten restaurants and cafes in Guildford, which hosted 160 bridge playing enthusiasts. This year is the 5th annual event and aims to raise £5000 with the help of 240 participants, using 15 venues. Funds raised, will go to Shooting Star Chase, a leading children’s hospice charity and Cardiac Risk in the Young, working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death. Players will meet up at St Mary’s Church for coffee and to register between 10.15am and 10.45am, where they will be given instructions and a map of the venues. They will then make their way to the first venue and play a few hands of bridge and, when completed, they will walk onto the next venue and play again, and so on during the day. Lunch is provided in the venue where the participants are playing at 1pm. At approximately 4.15 pm participants reconvene at the registration point for the results, prize giving and a raffle. The entry fee is £30 per player, to include coffee on arrival and a two course lunch. Those wishing to take part
