YOUR LOCAL TEAM And another month goes by... where does the time go? As I write this, Humph and I are just about to drive down to France with friends for a couple of weeks. The swimming pool, such a hit with the boy last year, beckons and now has built-in steps, which means he can exit whenever he wants, rather than having to rely on me putting down my glass to pull him out. We’ll both be happier! You will be aware that we are big fans of Surrey Hills Enterprises and are, as a local company based in the Surrey Hills, members of the organisation. Next month is their big annual event, the Surrey Hills Wood Fair which takes place on the 1st and 2nd October in the grounds of Birtley House near Bramley, Surrey. If you have never been,

it is well worth a visit, as there is plenty for everyone to do. It is of course mainly about wood but also about local artists, companies, manufacturers and producers. It is also very good value. Early bird tickets are just £7.50 per adult (£10 on the door) and children go free. See you there! Next month sees a few new changes. We are adding Effingham, East and West Horsley to our Guildford edition, and Leatherhead is joining our Dorking edition, which will take our total circulation to more than 117,500 copies every month. Look out as well for our brand new website with lots of new features and which will work on mobiles and tablets.

Craftsman in Iron Phil Kemp talks to one of our local blacksmiths at his forge in Forest Green The ancient art of transforming hard metal into practical, tactile and beautiful objects has its origins through the far distant mists of time. And indeed this almost mysterious art has remained largely unchanged over many hundreds of years – almost as though in blatant rebellion against the tireless march of technological advancement that has enveloped the modern world. Tucked away in the picturesque Surrey Hills countryside is a forge that has for over thirty years crafted iron into all manner of amazing things, and all by hand proving that the blacksmith’s hammer will never rest regardless. James Davies describes himself as an artist in iron, and there is no doubt that it is a perfect description. Working from his Forest Green Forge, adjacent to the village green and with The Parrot Inn close by, James wields his hammer with measured skill and boundless energy. All around him scattered across workbenches are the tools of his trade – with of course the forge at its heart, its flames

8

roaring to the tune of the bellows pumping air to ensure the metal to be beaten glows almost white hot. James’ story of how he came to be a blacksmith is fascinating, as much by its novelty as it is for his love of iron. “Although I initially started working with iron when I left school, I actually spent my early years in the aircraft industry making precision panels for instruments in Harrier jump jets,” said James, with a smile on his face as he saw my surprised reaction. “Seems strange I know, but my experience there of having to work with materials accurate to thousandths of an inch taught me how to craft with amazing accuracy.” His lucky break was being recruited by one of the country’s most celebrated blacksmiths who helped forge James’ future. “I joined the Richard Quinnell Forge in Leatherhead at a time when blacksmithing for art was really taking off. I was working alongside top-class artists doing ironwork, and was part of the industry at its peak when Richard launched the British Artist Blacksmith Association. The Association quickly raised the profile of ironwork art to the public.” Forest Green Forge has a gallery where visitors can see examples of the enormous range of metal items they have created over the years. “I used to do a lot of interior design

25 tonnes of pressure to do the initial work, and then do the final shaping using a handheld hammer. The real skill is getting the metal to exactly the right temperature. Too hot and it will fizzle, spark and burn so that the piece is ruined. Too cold and it won’t be workable.” The story of the forge buildings is as fascinating as that of what is hidden within its walls. “In 1996 there were only sheds here, all falling apart. I heard about an old 16th century brick-built barn that was threatened with demolition. I had it dismantled and shipped here literally in kit form to be erected as the forge buildings you see now. In 1996 it won the South of England Best Development Award.” A range of forge produced items, representative of his work

work like tables and chairs made from iron, the tables with glass tops,” said James as he showed me around the gallery, where he also has a bench covered in black albums each containing photos of work past and present. “However, the market has changed with people wanting minimalist things, empty rooms not being really artistic. I have got my own niche market now making special commissions, things that you just can’t buy off the shelf. Customers can pop-in and ask me to sketch the ideas they have so we can visualise what they want, or they bring their own sketches. And that’s where the albums also come into their own, stimulating ideas.”

Surreally dominating the centre of the forge gallery is a large free-standing sculpture of an alien flying saucer, seemingly completely out of place until you take time to feel the smoothness of the intricate panel beating, admire the sculpting, and wonder at the subtle variations in colour of the copper patination. This work of art is perhaps the perfect advertisement for James Davies, Craftsman in Iron.

The longer I was in the forge the more I appreciated just how skilled blacksmiths are with their ability not just at heating and shaping metal, but also in understanding how different metals will react in terms of colour and finish. “The craft of metal is so involved and is something you learn over many years. In my office I have got endless files with notes I have made of technology and technique. Metal is always trying to fight. Imagine shaping a piece of plasticine, how easy it is to shape. Take a piece of metal and it will always try to do the opposite of what you want. You have to learn how to beat it into shape; it’s like a battle really.” James pointed out different objects in the gallery, and you could sense the pride he holds for his work. There are particular items he enjoys making. “I have made so many dragons over the years. They work so well in iron. But I also love making flowers out of metal,” he said pointing out some remarkably life-like metal blooms. “Those lilies look so delicate. And of course they are.” I asked for a layman’s explanation on the process of taking a rod of iron through all of the stages needed before it ends up as a fragile-looking flower petal. “I can take a six metre long half-an-inch thick strip of metal and forge that into a three millimetre thin strip and shape it into a flower petal,” James explained. “I can get the forge fire up to temperatures around 800 degrees, obviously very hot and hot enough to make iron soft so it behaves a bit like cheese. I have a power hammer with

Surrey Hills Trust Fund Profits made from the Wood Fair will help to support the Surrey Hills Trust Fund which has been established in partnership with the Community Foundation for Surrey to help conserve and enhance the Surrey Hills landscape. The fund provides grants to support projects, programmes and activities that benefit the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ensure our countryside is enjoyed by generations to come. One project the Surrey Hills Trust Fund has recently supported is the Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP) who help local young people to make safe, happy, resilient, and positive changes in their lives and in their community. The LYP took a group of young people out into the Surrey Hills to do Forest School Survival Skills training, which involved building shelters, camp fires and learning how to forage for food, as well as outdoor team building. They also did a mountain bike course on Leith Hill, learning how to navigate the trails, understand the environment and work together. The aim was to offer a unique outdoor learning experience to young people who may not always get the opportunity, helping them engage with the Surrey Hills countryside and boosting confidence and learning. Joe Crome, General Manager, LYP comments: “We were delighted to receive this grant from the Surrey Hills Trust Fund and work with the group of students. The programme we provided has not only been great fun but provided the students with new skills vital for learning and helped to boost confidence.”

The day will run from 9.30am until 5pm. The conference fee of £85 (£60 students) includes refreshments and lunch plus an opportunity to visit the site of the Museum’s Anglo-Saxon building – an archaeological reconstruction currently being built in the woodland. Squire’s Garden Centres Friday 16th September 10am and 2pm They hold Gardening Workshops for adults on the third Friday of the month at 10am and 2pm. The workshops give you the chance to get creative in a fun and relaxed environment, and they are suitable for everyone, from gardening novices to the more experienced gardener. Each monthly workshop has a different theme. You could fill a large barrel with colourful autumn plants, create your very own spooky Halloween cauldron, or get ready for Christmas by creating a luxury festive pot, a candle centrepiece or a frosted wreath for your front door. The workshops last around 1 hour and they are great value, as the cost of the container, compost and plants alone would come to more than this - plus you’ll get tuition, and a complimentary tea or coffee in their Café Bar afterwards! They also make great birthday and anniversary gifts. Advanced booking is required - visit the Squire’s Information Desk or call your local centre (excludes Chertsey). www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk. Why choose a prep school? Sean Skehan, headmaster, Barrow Hills School, looks at some of the reasons. As a parent, choosing a school has to be one of the most significant decisions that you will make for your child. For some parents an independent prep school will be one of the choices they are considering; for others, it may never have crossed their mind that this could be the right school for their child. An all-round education The independent nature of a prep school could give your child access to opportunities - academic, extracurricular and pastoral- that are not always available in the state system. A good prep school will help your children to enjoy their childhood for longer because of the security and care it offers until thirteen. It can protect them from some of the less pleasant pressures of growing up while developing qualities of character which will be the foundation of happy and successful teenage years. An obsession with academic achievement above all else is something of which both state and prep schools can be guilty, focusing on league tables and SATS results at the expense of a great all-round education. The pressure associated with this type of environment is rarely helpful. A good school will strike a balance between academic achievement, creativity, and sport, and the development of the attitudes and qualities essential to happiness and fulfillment.

Smaller class size For many parents, class size is a key factor in considering a prep school. Typically averaging a maximum of twenty, smaller class sizes help teachers to really get to know each child’s academic abilities, allowing them more time to focus on each individual. We know that spending quality time with children reaps rewards, in fact, research from Durham University claims that children who attend private school benefit from the equivalent of two years’ extra education by the time they are sixteen. The opportunity for a teacher to invest more time in understanding how a child ticks and establishing her or his pastoral and academic needs is the great strength of a prep school. More sport Sport encourages a healthy, fitter lifestyle, helps children to be team players and leaders, and to deal with victory and defeat. In a prep school your child may enjoy up to five hours sport per week, including team games, matches and dedicated sports afternoons. As well as developing their physical sporting abilities your child will also get to revel in the whole match experience; travelling, the all-important match tea and the hearty ‘three cheers’ at the end of the game – fond memories that will stay with them for life. Check what the prep school’s policy is in relation to matches. Some have a ‘sport for all’ philosophy; every

child has the opportunity to play in a match every week. Not all schools follow this approach, so while the children may benefit from playing a lot of sport, unless they are particularly talented, they won’t always get the chance to play as part of a school team. Impressive facilities Many parents will identify with an idyllic school setting where their children can be children, spending their early academic years in an environment that allows them to climb trees, kick up leaves, explore the natural world and generally enjoy plenty of fresh air and run around outside to let off steam. Some prep schools are able to provide impressive sports halls, astro-turf, swimming pools and tennis courts, as well as climbing walls, extensive games fields and even access to stunning natural woodland. They may also have science laboratories, drama and dance studios, design technology workshops, art studios and music rooms. Specialist teaching Often prep schools have subject specialist teachers rather than generalist class teachers. At Barrow Hills our French teachers work with children from Nursery (age 2-3) to Year 8 and games teachers work with children from Kindy (age 3-4) to Year 8. This means that the children experience a variety of learning techniques and forge strong relationships with a range of teachers. A prep school usually includes a wider range of subjects, such as languages, drama and music, with a broader range of musical instrument lessons to try.

Works for working parents In today’s world it is the norm for both parents to be working. Generally, traditional school hours simply don’t match those of the average working day. Prep schools are more likely to accommodate the child care needs of working parents, allowing a stress-free and seamless transition from home to school, without having to make complicated arrangements involving other child care providers. At Barrow Hills for example, the day starts at 8am with a breakfast club. Any child can go home as late as 6pm; the older children can do their homework and the younger ones relax by playing a quiet game. And there is a healthy snack to keep hungry tummies happy until dinner time! Communication At prep school parents are invited to parent consultations two or three times per year and can expect three written reports, keeping them informed about their child’s progress and achievements. We are able to spend more time talking with you regularly about how your child is progressing and about her or his academic and pastoral needs. Exam Preparation Prep schools put preparation for examinations in the context of a broad and balanced education. They will often prepare children for exams by offering guidance on the correct exam technique rather than teaching to the test, often the approach with SATS. There are of course always exceptions to this rule so be sure to find out more about a prep school’s policy on this when you visit.

Education for girls – looking at it from a new angle… St Ives girls are going places – into the forest with Forest School, rock climbing, into the photography lab and swimming all year round… you name it, they do it. It may sound like playtime but at St Ives our girls benefit from a truly 360 degree, practical, creative, sporting and of course academic education. It is our aim to make the most of every child, teaching her to love learning, to love challenging herself and to love being the best she can be.

of our open days on 7th October or 4th November. Alternatively, come and get muddy at our free Forest School Activity Morning on 24th September. Please email Hayley.dibb@stiveshaslemere.com for more information.

As an independent school we are free to design a curriculum that brings out the very best in every single girl, whatever her talents and interests, because we understand that every child is unique. We believe that it is that focus on individual tailored learning in every aspect of her education that helps our girls achieve the exceptional results that we see year on year. Autumn Countryside Show 8th & 9th October, Weald & Downland Museum, Singleton

Visitors to the Autumn Countryside Show on 8th and 9th October will experience the wonderful autumnal sights and sounds of a traditional harvest. This popular seasonal show features traditional working demonstrations, including heavy horses and vintage tractors ploughing, steam-powered threshing, plus a Horticultural Show, woodland and rural craft demonstrations, displays and competitions. The Weald & Downland Museum’s 40-acre downland site is the perfect location for this annual festival, which celebrates and showcases many traditional countryside activities. Working plough horses are a favourite with visitors of all ages, with our own Shires among the teams of draught horses at work. Vintage tractors will be busy preparing the ground for sowing after the harvest and there will be a display of tractors and farm implements for visitors to enjoy. New this year: The Dog & Duck Show! The entertaining and educational 30-minute Dog & Duck Show demonstration includes: - fascinating insights into how to understand dogs - demonstrations of dogs’ natural instincts - an amusing display of sheep dogs working with ducks Stuart Barnes’ passion for the canine species has enabled him to gain an incredible understanding of everything about dogs. Stuart and his team use both trained and untrained sheep dogs to herd ducks, amusing and educating audiences about common dog behaviour issues and how these can be resolved. The show demonstrates how untrained and poorly behaved dogs still have a programmed natural instinct, giving the audience a new understanding of the Way of the Dog. Steam-threshing demonstrations The threshing of the wheat crop – separating the grain

24

from the straw – is one of the main attractions during the weekend. In the days before combine harvesters, the ‘threshing train’ was a common sight – working the farms and travelling the lanes during the autumn and winter months. It usually comprised a steam traction engine, threshing drum, elevator, and living van used by the engine driver and his mate. Annual Horticultural Show The 7th annual Horticultural Show will take place as part of the show, with classes to suit all ages, ranging from vegetables to woodwork, marmalade to miniature gardens. Alongside the class entries will be displays from local clubs, societies and the Museum’s gardening team, plus traditional craft demonstrations. Crafts, demonstrations, food & drink Enjoy a range of delicious produce from vendors in the Events Field and quench your thirst with a drink from the bar. Try tasty homemade light lunches and snacks from the Museum café marquee in the Events Field or its kiosk behind the Market Square. Also enjoy craft and trade stands, plus demonstrations with a countryside theme. Food stands at the event will include hot and cold foods, sweets and much more! Visitors can also enjoy a pint at the bar on site. Dogs on short leads are welcome and there is ample free parking.

FIND OUT MORE The Museum is open for the Autumn Countryside Show on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 2016, from 10.30am-5pm. Regular Museum entry charges apply, which include admission to the Autumn Countryside Show. Entry is free for Annual Members.

Nearly time to get growing again for OctoBeardFest Fancy growing a beard for charity this year? Here’s your ideal opportunity to have some fun with a new look and raise some much needed funds for a highly successful local charity. The Prostate Project is a volunteer led, Guildford based prostate cancer charity with no offices or paid staff (www.prostate-project. org.uk). Administration costs are below 4% resulting in at least 96 pence of every pound going directly to the point of need. We support the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital as well as jointly funding a highly acclaimed cancer research team at the University of Surrey. OctoBeardFest is a big success story for the charity. Now in its fourth year, the beard-growing appeal has raised over £200,000, largely through hundreds of small donations. The money has enabled the charity’s 24 strong cancer research team at the University of Surrey to take on projects that would otherwise have been impossible. Their work includes the invention of targeted therapies for cancer such as the HXR9 molecule that kills only cancer cells, leaving normal cells untouched, pioneering research into cancer vaccines and the use of viruses to kill cancer cells. The team has also developed a diagnostic biomarker which can detect a protein called EN2, in urine. This

raises the prospect of a cheap, accurate, easy-toadminister test for prostate cancer that will be far more reliable than the current 30-year-old PSA test. It is undergoing a multi-centre clinical trial programme at local hospitals, largely funded by OctoBeardFest donations. Early detection can save most of the 11,000 lives lost in the UK every year to prostate cancer. We hope many VantagePoint readers will grow beards for OBF this year and help save men’s lives. Getting involved is easy. Just register at the OctoBeardFest website: www.octobeardfest.co.uk, email us at: info@ octobeardfest.co.uk or call 07724 465883. www.prostate-project.org.uk

Andrew Crisell, our grumpy old git (GOG), recently made a list of potential gripes and was horrified to discover that virtually everything irritated him, the classic symptom of a dreadful old fogey. Here is his latest salvo...

CHARITY PROFILE Oakleaf activities available to those in Waverley. Currently, the majority of these take place in Godalming and Farnham as central points for people to access support. In addition, they have and will continue building links in the community, using feedback to ensure the activities and support people really need and want are provided. Activities run Monday to Friday and are organised by Paul Osbiston, the Outreach Engagement Coordinator at Oakleaf. Paul also meets with each individual looking to start an activity to help agree on the best plan moving forward for the individual’s needs. Using close links to similar organisations, Oakeaf regularly signposts clients to those that can help them most, ensuring people get well rounded support. Oakleaf reaches out for mental health with wellbeing in the community Oakleaf Enterprise is the only mental health charity in Surrey working as a social enterprise offering support to people who suffer from severe and enduring mental health issues in regaining the skills and confidence required to get back into work and be active members of society. This is done by providing a mix of vocational training in IT, upholstery and horticulture and a range of social activities. The activities range from focused confidence courses and mindfulness sessions through to fitness and yoga classes, guitar lessons, art-related sessions and photography classes. Each of the vocational training clients (service-users) receives a personalised action plan that is reviewed every four months to help ensure the best support is provided based on the client’s needs. From the success of the range of activities run at Oakleaf in Guildford, they have also recently been awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund for the development of their ‘Reach Out for Wellbeing’ project – set up to deliver a structured programme of wellbeing and engagement activities for local, vulnerable adults suffering mental ill-health and will work closely with local partners to offer activities. These not only welcome existing clients, but also engage new ones, particularly hardest-to-reach adults at greatest risk of isolation and disadvantage.

Outreach work is made easier by the generosity of people in the community; public donations have helped to maintain the Yoga and Pilates groups, and instrument donations have helped to start a new music group. It is also with the support of local businesses, such as Café Mila in Godalming, that Oakleaf are able to provide a safe and peaceful environment for clients to take part in activities. Activities are open to anyone who needs the support. To join, people simply need to fill out a referral form, available on their website (www.oakleaf-enterprise. org). If people are unable to access the internet Oakleaf are more than happy to post out a copy of the form, so please do give them a call on 01483 303649. In addition, they also welcome local businesses and individuals that are able to support the expansion of activities through donations (additional funding and/or items) and also welcome volunteers or any ideas for new activities that will fit well with the existing social inclusion support in Waverley.

The project has already been seen to be vital in helping to make a huge difference to people living in places where transport links and the costs involved do not permit easy and regular travel to the centre in Guildford. Oakleaf are continuously building the calendar of 30

GARDENING An Inca Garden at Hampton Court

With Beth Otway

so they were really keen to have a public entrance – during the show, people will be able to go in and out, which I really like. BO: Yes, it’s wonderful to see a Show Garden that visitors to the show can access, and really experience themselves. JJ: The thing I like about the garden is that it’s colourful. It’s a fun garden, and I hope it’ll inspire people.

Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show has been designed to convey a sense of adventure and travel to its visitors. The Inca Garden reflects the experiences of American explorer Hiram Bingham, who discovered the ‘lost’ Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, high in the Peruvian Andes, in 1911.

BO: I am sure your garden will inspire many people. I like your vegetables and your courgettes too. JJ: They’re all traditional Inca crops. BO: I have grown all of these vegetables - they are fun to grow. Who built the garden?

I caught up with Jennifer Jones, the designer of Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden, to find out more about this interesting garden, which was designed for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. BO: Hi Jennifer, are you pleased with the garden? JJ: I am, I’m really pleased with it. Yes! I didn’t know that much about tropical plants before, so it’s been really interesting – I’ve learnt so much. I’ve learnt about whole new sections of plants that I just had no idea about. BO: How long were you researching the plants for the garden? JJ: We started researching last October. You have to submit the first designs in December. We’ve got quite a lot of plants that are from South America in the garden. I was really lucky, I found a good nursery, Desert & Jungle in Somerset where I got a lot of my plants. BO: What will happen to the plants, when the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show finishes? JJ: I think some of them are going to go back to Desert & Jungle; I’ve also been in touch with The Living Rainforest in Berkshire. I sent them a list with the plants I have - they’ll have anything we can give them. I’ve designed the garden so that we won’t throw very much away. All the stone is going back to the stone supplier - it can be re-used again, and all the plants are going to go to a good home. BO: What’s the experience of designing the garden been like? JJ: Well, Journey Latin America has been a great sponsor of the garden, and it’s been a great opportunity for me, it’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s been a really interesting garden, because JLA are all about visiting countries, 32

Top left: Jennifer Jones in the Journey Latin America’s Inca Garden Above: Another view of the garden

JJ: Surrey Hills Landscaping - Mark Leverton, built the garden, they did all the stone. Mark was really good - we had a little blip this morning, he was straight here, helping us out – he was unflappable. BO: And is there anyone else you’d like to thank? JJ: I’ve mentioned JLA, who have been great, Rob from Desert & Jungle who has been great with the plants, and my family who have been great as well! My mum has helped out too. Surrey Hills Landscaping have been brilliant. It’s been a great experience all round! Repetitive Injuries and Joint Pain in Children and Adolescents Nikki Browning BSc (hons) MCSP MAACP Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist sport and over use their quadriceps muscles. It often happens at the beginning of a rapid growth spurt.

Sports participation promotes the physical and emotional well-being of children and also encourages the lifelong habit of exercise. Although the benefits of athletic activity are significant, it is extremely important that children do lots of regular stretching to prevent injury and pain. Overuse injuries occur gradually over time when an athletic activity is repeated so often, areas of the body do not have enough time to heal between playing. For example, overhead bowling in cricket can be associated with injuries to the shoulder and spine and football is often associated with injuries to the knee.

Severs - is a common overuse injury in children; with pain in the heel where the Achilles tendon inserts. Again this especially occurs in physically active children who play lots of sport. It usually occurs during adolescent growth spurts and is only temporary; but if persistent then physiotherapy can help. Many overuse injuries in children can be prevented. The key to prevention is to avoid overdoing any single sport, doing regular stretching and giving growing bodies adequate rest between practices or games. FIND OUT MORE If your child or teenager experiences any pain or you would like any advice to prevent overuse injuries please call Physio1to1 01483 424470 to book an appointment with me.

Overuse injuries can affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and growth plates. In children, these structures are still growing and the growth is generally uneven. Bones grow first which pulls at tight muscles and tendons. This uneven growth pattern makes younger athletes more susceptible to muscle, tendon, and growth plate injuries. Muscles and tendons adapt to stress—that’s how they become stronger. But they also need to rest and rebuild between the episodes of stress. With an overuse injury the muscle or tendon receives the stress but never gets a chance to rest. Growth plates are the areas of developing cartilage where bone growth occurs in children. The growth plates are weaker than the nearby ligaments and tendons. Repetitive stress can lead to injury of the growth plate and disrupt the normal growth of the bone.

WALK - Chawton to Bentworth This walk starts and ends in Chawton, well worth a visit in its own right and the home of Jane Austen. Her house is opposite the village car park. The walk description is provided by Guildford Rambling Club, see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk. They also provided the Peaslake walk in July which we accidentally failed to acknowledge – apologies!

The walk 1. Walk back to the A31 roundabout and cross into the road opposite. Go under a bridge (the Watercress Line) and, a little way beyond it, turn left along a lane, Chawton Park Road/National Cycle Route 23. You will now walk more or less straight ahead for almost 2 miles before you turn off. Along the way, you will initially pass a few houses and then the lane becomes a track. You pass a Chawton Farm information plaque and go through various gates and along a wide grassy avenue through Chawton Park Wood. You ignore various lefts and rights including one very wide track sweeping away left. Shortly after the latter you encounter a fork and take the right-hand branch. Soon after that you turn off, taking the second clear but unsigned path heading away to the right and up through trees. 2. At the top, you reach a fence and walk left looking for a turning off to the right (which may or may not now have a signpost). Here, take this turn right to continue forward, passing a barrier and proceeding along a path which soon merges into a wide vehicle track. Follow this for over half a mile, passing metal gates and barriers, until reaching a small house (on the left-hand side).

Here, take a bridleway right and follow the track until you reach houses and a road. Turn right along the road but immediately take an unsigned path off right, over grass near a house and along a fenced corridor to reach a field. Walk along the left-hand side of this field and the right-hand side of the next to reach a tarmac drive. Go straight across and along the left-hand side of the next field. Keep going forward until reaching a hedge and dropping down through a gap in it onto a wide stony track (Turners Lane). Turn left and walk up into Bentworth, emerging on a road with the Star Inn to your right. At April 2016 the pub was ‘closed until further notice’. This may or may not be still the case when you do the walk. Fear not though. If it is closed you could use the benches opposite for your picnic. And there is another picnic option and another pub a little way further on. 3. Follow the sign to the school and church and then turn right to walk past the school and straight through the churchyard (a possible picnic spot). The path exits the back of the churchyard and continues to meet a road. Go straight across and into a side road signed to Shalden and Alton. Follow this road round to reach the other pub, the Sun. Continue down a hill. Just after some ‘No Limit’ signs and before a side road right, turn right and go through a wide gap in the hedge into a field. Walk around this clockwise, ignoring the obvious path which heads out half-right. At the far left corner of the field go through into the next field and continue along its left-hand edge to enter a third field. Here, walk straight out to the far side to reach Turners Lane again.

4. Turn left. Walk for about 1.5 miles along this wide track which undulates up and down. Reach a road. Turn left and walk along, passing a couple of houses, until you find, next to a large oak tree, a footpath sign pointing right. This path takes you out half-left across a field and through into another, very large, field. Continue forward across it to reach a gate on the other side. Emerge on a track, turn right and walk a few yards to reach the dead end of a road. Turn right and quickly left down a track to reach a busy road. Cross to a track labelled ‘Bushy Leaze Wood’. You will walk about almost three quarters of a mile through this wood. You do it by immediately, at the entry barrier, following a yellow arrow off the very wide main track and branching left, up into the trees. At another yellow arrow you are taken left. Now continue along the path following yellow arrows. Reach and cross a wide gravelled track and continue on, ignoring a quick right turn. 5. The path reaches a 5 way junction with a 2 way signpost. You continue straight ahead along a very wide grassy track. Reach a fork with two yellow arrows. Branch right. Eventually you will see, on the right-hand side, a yellow arrow on a post but, beware, it is on the back of the post! Turn right and follow the path as it swings left and along the line of a fence. Opposite the start of a track on the left, look for a yellow arrow on a gap in the fence. Follow the path through here and down a slope. This brings you to a road. Turn right and immediately swing sharp left to walk under the Watercress Line, down to the roundabout on the A31 and across into Chawton.

PROFILE Haslemere Musical Society to a point now where they are confident of playing a wide range of the classical repertoire. The society’s other professionals, who ensure that high standards are maintained, are Tom Horn, a gifted violinist who leads the orchestra; Clive Osgood, the well-known Haslemere organist and composer, who works as the accompanist to the choir in their weekly rehearsals; and Tom Lydon, who joined the society early in 2015 and is providing a new impetus to the choir as their chorus master. He is also a composer, who has recently had his concerto for xylophone and orchestra performed to public acclaim in the north of England. He moved to settle in Haslemere with wife and young family over 2 years ago and is a fixture of the local music scene.

The 100 or so members of the locally renowned Haslemere Musical Society (HMS) are now well into their 93rd consecutive season providing excellent choral and orchestral music for the area’s music lovers. Under the baton of their widely acclaimed Musical Director, James Ross, and chorus master, Tom Lydon, they begin rehearsals in Haslemere Hall on Monday evening 5th September for a year’s concerts. First is a wholly orchestral concert on 15th October at St. Christopher’s Church in Haslemere, featuring music by Mozart, Elgar and Haydn and also Canteloube’s haunting Songs of the Auvergne, sung by Clare Loosley. Then on the first Saturday in December at Haslemere Hall the chorus accompanied by the HMS symphony orchestra will sing Gounod’s beautiful St. Cecilia Mass and the orchestra will play excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s evocative Swan Lake and Winter from Glazunov’s The Seasons, very appropriate for the time of year. The society, whose membership is wholly amateur, has players and singers from Haslemere and beyond. It is represented by a wide range of professions and retirees, and ages range from the mid-20s to the mid80s. HMS maintains its high standards by having four permanent professionals. Longest serving is Dr James Ross who, in addition to his work with HMS, directs other musical societies in the London area. He has developed a very large repertoire over 20 years, and is in high demand internationally for his work, notably for charity where he has raised over £1 million in the last 3 years. James Ross has worked with HMS for 10 years now and has developed the performance skills of both the choir and the orchestra 44

The other major performances this season by HMS will continue on 4th February 2017, with the much-loved annual Come and Sing, and two choral and orchestral concerts on the first Saturdays in March and May 2017. For the Come and Sing, which will feature excerpts from Haydn’s wonderful Creation, members of HMS chorus and orchestra are joined by singers from the whole area to enjoy an afternoon of impromptu music making. Following that, the concert on 4th March will include one of the most famous of all choral and orchestral works, Beethoven’s monumental Choral Symphony. Finally, to end the season, the society will entertain its invariably large and enthusiastic audience on 6th May with a potpourri of choral and orchestral numbers reflecting the well-known radio programme Friday Night is Music Night (except that, as with all the society’s concerts, it’s on a Saturday!).

FIND OUT MORE Details of all events, plus plenty of other information about HMS, can be found on the society’s lively website: www.hmsoc.org.uk
