CONTACTS

Since we started publishing the first Royal Mail-delivered community magazines in this area, we have listened to our readers' feedback and made improvements to the magazine over the past few years. These have included a wider variety of articles, local authors and more localised content.

Marcus Atkins, Sales Director 01483 420173 / 07702 132157 marcus@vantagepublishing.co.uk

The biggest change has been to the Jottings section. Every month, we receive 300-350 entries, which promote charities, community events, fundraisers and local organisations absolutely free-of-charge. We get great feedback from those who use this service, who tell us how grateful they are for the extra publicity and resulting increase in helpers, visitors or members they receive as a result. It is very heartening.

Lauren Broughton, Sales 01483 661088 / 07852 041227 lauren@vantagepublishing.co.uk

The changes we have made have been as a result of reader comments. We started by putting the events and/or organisations in bold to make them more obvious, and then we put all them into date order. This month, we have gone further and have now decided to put all the Jottings together in one continuous section, which will avoid lots of page-turning! We have also given the magazine a small design refresh - we hope you approve. Any other feedback is welcomed. Please email me at the address given below.

The view from Leith Hill

The Surrey Hills

Celebrating 60 Years as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty How did it start?

AS we’re now in the second half of 2017, the Surrey Hills family is looking ahead to what promises to be a significant milestone. 2018 will mark the 60th anniversary of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) designation. The Surrey Hills was one of the first landscapes in the country to be designated in 1958 and is now one of 38 AONBs in England and Wales. The Surrey Hills stretch across rural Surrey, from the chalk North Downs that run from Farnham in the west, above Guildford, Dorking and Reigate, to Oxted in the east, covering a quarter of the county. Other well-known AONBs include the Cotswolds, Chilterns, Kent Downs and more...

Although geology, soils and climate have created the bones of the landscape, the appearance of the Surrey Hills has been shaped for centuries by the changing patterns of land use and settlement. Today much of this historic landscape character is still intact. The Surrey Hills now embrace an amazing variety of countryside, from the rolling chalk downs of yew and box woodland and flower rich grasslands, to the acid heaths and woodland of the Greensand Hills that rise to form the highest point in South East England at Leith Hill.

The Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Designation On 8th May 1958, the Minister for Housing and Local Government confirmed the Designation Order for the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty under the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. The act legislated for the designation of AONBs and National Parks. They were both considered to be of equal landscape status with the purpose to conserve and enhance natural beauty, although National Parks were also to provide the opportunity for open air recreation for wider public enjoyment. Almost 60 years ago the Surrey Hills was one of the first landscapes to be designated and is now one of 38 AONBs in England & Wales.

What the designation meant

Above: Surrey Hills facts and figures. Below: River Wey by Philippa Reed, one of the winners of the 2016 Surrey Hills/VantagePoint photo competition.

The AONB designation has been a planning tool to help protect the area from development pressures, although the Surrey Hills is unique in being wholly contained within the Green Belt. It was not until 1998 that a Joint Advisory Committee was established to oversee the administration of the Surrey Hills which led to the recruitment of the first AONB officer. In 2000, the Countryside and Rights of Way Act placed a statutory duty on bodies to have regard to the management of the AONB, and local authorities the duty to regularly plan, review and adopt a management plan for the area.

Securing the future In 2008, the Surrey Hills Board was established as a Joint Management Committee to develop policies and programmes that protect and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the Surrey Hills whilst promoting the social and economic well-being of the area. In persual of this, the board supported the establishment of the Surrey Hills Society to promote the enjoyment and care of the Surrey Hills for those that live, work in or visit the area. This independent charity has gone from strength to strength and works tirelessly engage the public in and around the Surrey Hills through a varied programme of walks, talks, events and a presence at shows. Due to celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, the Surrey Hills Society provides a wonderful legacy for the Surrey Hills well into the future. THE SURREY HILLS - CELEBRATING 60 YEARS AS AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY

Celebrating 60 years Plans are well underway to celebrate the anniversary and include… In early 2018 look out for a series of vintage inspired Surrey Hills prints. Artist Louise Dunckley from Illustrations & Prints (www.illustrationsandprints. com) is creating six posters of the Surrey Hills landscape which include; the Devil’s Punchbowl, Leith Hill, Frensham Ponds, Newlands Corner, Box Hill and the North Downs Way. These prints will feature along railway stations in the Surrey Hills and will also be available to purchase. A percentage from the sale of each of these prints will go back to the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, which supports conservation and community projects in the Surrey Hills (www.surreyhillstrustfund.org). Next spring you’ll be able to pick up a free pocket guide and map from a variety of locations which will highlight 60 things to see and do in the Surrey Hills. From the well-known to the unique, this guide will encourage you to get the most out of your day in the Surrey Hills.

60 Years of Landscape Change' which will research the history of the Surrey Hills. Thanks to a ‘Sharing Heritage’ grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the booklet will provide a readable history of how the AONB came about and its achievements/ benefits to the community. Sections will cover the way that different aspects of the AONB have changed over the 60 years – farming, woodland, broader landscape, built environment and population pressures etc. – and help local people and visitors understand that the countryside changes over time and has not always been as it is seen on a visit in 2018.

FIND OUT MORE Visit www.surreyhills.org for regular updates on the 60th Anniversary projects.

There will also be a Surrey Hills-themed calendar and photography exhibition in partnership with Surrey Life magazine, similar to the one that was done with VantagePoint last year. If you’ve got some inspiring photographs of the landscape why not enter them into the competition? Visit www.surreyhills.org/photography-competition for further information. The Surrey Hills Society will be producing a 60th anniversary booklet, titled 'The Surrey Hills AONB –

Does your Will qualify for the new Inheritance Tax allowance ? The new inheritance tax allowance will come in progressively and is worth £175,000 per person but many Wills do not qualify and so the family will loose out. This may well be the right time to revise your Will A Will can achieve all of the following: • Minimise tax. • Ensure that minor children are looked after by your appointed guardians. • Ensure that a young person does not inherit at the age of 18. • Ensure that your spouse has enough to live on but that your assets do not get swallowed up in Care Fees. • Ensure that your partner is provided for but your children inherit ultimately. • Ensure means tested benefits are protected. • Protect your assets from your children’s divorces or business insolvencies. Without a Will: • A surviving spouse may not inherit everything. • A co-habitant has no inheritance rights. • A beneficiary may lose State benefits. • Minor children are taken into care. • The way the state distributes your assets might not be what you would have liked at all. • Unnecessarily high Inheritance tax may be payable.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAs) These are essential documents designed to protect YOUR interests during your lifetime. We should all have them because no one is immune to illness or accident. They are the best insurance you can have. Do you travel a lot? Do you enjoy hazardous sports? Do you run a business? If misfortune strikes and there are no LPAs in place your spouse or other relative cannot run your affairs for you. Even a joint account can be frozen. The alternative to LPAs is an application to the Court of Protection .This is complex and expensive. It is best to have LPAs in place. Keeping fit and active as we get older Jo Butler, from Physio 1to1 in Godalming, talks us through how physical activity can help you stay fit and independent as you get older. AS Winston Churchill once said:

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference” Our social attitude towards ageing, of taking it easy and slowing down, is in fact threatening the health and wellbeing of our older generation. A sedentary lifestyle isn’t great for any age group, but in the over 65s it strongly correlates with a higher rate of falls, and general ill health. Basically you have got to keep moving. If you want to stay healthy, reduce the risk of mental illness and remain independent well into old age, simply keep moving! Moving doesn’t just mean exercise, it can also include shopping, cleaning, gardening and playing with grandchildren. These all keep you moving and help reduce the prolonged sedentary periods which are threatening our health and wellbeing. The perils of sitting! We are all guilty of spending more time sitting than our ancestors. Sitting time includes watching TV, using a computer, reading, listening to music and sitting in a car, bus or train. Most adults spend on average more than 7 hours a day sitting, which is shocking enough, but this increases to over 10 hours in the over-65 population! We are literally sitting ourselves to death. There is much research now that directly correlates the amount of time spent sitting and the risk of heart disease, diabetes, back and neck pain and other orthopaedic problems. Simply put, too much sitting can shorten your life. Research suggests that regardless of how much intense aerobic activity you do per week, if the rest of the time you remain sedentary, the benefit of such exercise is September 2017

reduced. Extended periods of sitting alters our metabolic system and switches off our muscle activity. The result is poor muscular control of posture and compromised body function. Fundamentally our bodies love movement and dislike immobility. Move more… Happily, research also suggests that, small changes to our lifestyle can have a dramatic impact. Getting up and walking about during TV adverts can help break up prolonged sitting, as can standing and walking about when using the telephone. Standing is so much better for you than sitting.

Be honest with yourself about how much time you spend resting each day. Get yourself a step monitor or activity monitor, such as a fitbit, and see how active you are. If you’ve not done this before you’ll probably be surprised at how little you move during the day. Then… move even more More is better and there is much support for the view that you should increase your activity level as you get older. Evidence suggests you should be aiming for 30 mins of moderate aerobic activity at least 5 days a week. These activities should be hard enough to raise your heart rate, such as fast paced walking, riding a bike, pushing a lawnmower or recreational activities such as swimming, water aerobics, doubles tennis, dancing or badminton. In addition to these cardiovascular exercises you should also try and do activities that strengthen your muscles. The stronger your muscles, are the more protection they offer your joints. This is even more important if you suffer with arthritis. The worst thing

Falls

If you have had a fall or feel worried about falling due to trouble with your balance and walking you must let your GP know. You will likely need a falls risk assessment. This will help assess your risk of falls, and highlight areas that need work to reduce this risk. This may involve looking at: • Home environment eg furniture layout and removing trip hazards such as rugs. • Exercises to improve your strength and balance. • Checking your eyesight. • Checking your current medications to see if any need changing. you can do is to stop moving. Its best to carry out large movement patterns, rather than strengthening individual muscles. Some exercises contribute to strength as well as cardiovascular fitness, such as swimming, dancing and tennis. Pilates, yoga, martial arts and other movementbased exercises count as large movement patterns. Find out what’s on offer in your local area. Movement also helps challenge our body's balance systems, many of which are ‘use it or lose it’ systems. This helps to keep them in tip-top condition. Simply keeping active during

KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE AS WE GET OLDER

Pain on moving People often stop moving if they have pain. Most pain responds best to movement and will continue to get worse if you don’t move. As physiotherapists we spend a lot of time teaching people to move again after periods of prolonged pain. Fear of movement is often a contributing factor to the experience of pain. If your pain is new then seek advice, but if it is a known pain then you’ll often be surprised at how moving around can help. the day can lead to a reduced risk of falling. Your balance can’t be challenged whilst you are sitting down. Anyway, I’ve personally been sitting for too long writing up this article. It’s time for me to move and for you to move too. Wardrobe Staple: The White Shirt • FASHION

With Kirstie Smillie

Just when you think there is nothing in your wardrobe, a white shirt will lift your look to a timeless style goddess, says fashion stylist, Kirstie Smillie. AT this time of year when the shops have already begun the transition for cooler weather (even though it's still summer for most of us), a white shirt looks fresh and bright but adds enough cover for the beginning of Autumn.

Vintage inspiration, still relevant today:

It’s the one item I always look for with clients on a shopping day - the perfect white shirt to layer under or over or just on its own.

The rules It should have a high percentage of cotton, maybe a little stretch for comfort, to look crisp and keep a strong white. It has to be washable or it will sit in the wash bin for most of it’s life. Ideally choose a classic collar that will add a sharp frame around your face.

Above, from left, men’s style in the 1930s; Ava Gardner during the 1950s; Grace Kelly in the 1960s to Cindy Crawford in Donna Karan in the 1990s.

Don’t worry that it’s see through - layer over striped tops to show a subtle design through, or wear over skin tone undies to disappear. Use to layer under cropped knitwear and roll the sleeves over the 3/4 sleeves. If it’s longer, try tucking in at the front to emphasise your waist without the full tuck in.

My white shirt history Apart from jackets, a white shirt is my own style favourite. I have a large range from classic fitted with cuffs to loose linen; an absolute essential wrap and tie-waisted (which I will be bereft when worn out) and a couple of long oversized tunic shirts that become perfect beach cover ups. I can’t emphasise the super useful status of this simple design classic. A white shirt will never be a wasted purchase.

Scented Daffodils • GARDENING

With Beth Otway

I am particularly fond of scented daffodils; last year I conducted a scented daffodil trial to showcase beautiful and enchanting daffodil cultivars, which produce exquisitely fragrant, long-lasting flowers. I've been looking forward to sharing the finestperforming daffodil cultivars from my 2017 trial with you, and as September is a great month to plant daffodil bulbs, this column offered me the perfect opportunity. The best-performing daffodil cultivar in my trial was Narcissus 'Grand Soleil d'Or'. The fifty Narcissus 'Grand Soleil d'Or' bulbs that were planted for my trial produced 119 flowering stems, with each flowering stem produced an average of 10 flowers,

delivering a total of 1190 flowers and creating a show stopping daffodil display which flourished for 34 days! As well as being the most floriferous, the flowers of Narcissus 'Grand Soleil d'Or' were the most highly perfumed flowers of all of the daffodils grown for this trial. Happily, the fragrance that the flowers of Narcissus 'Grand Soleil d'Or' produced was as delightful as it was powerful, radiating a sweet and heady scent, which was rather hyacinth-like in its quality, and offered distinctive citrus notes. Narcissus 'Baby Moon' is a great daffodil cultivar to plant in a container. This diminutive daffodil produces surprisingly powerful, fragrant blooms that really pack a punch. Offering a fruity fragrance, which has a definite floral, quince-like character to its scent, Narcissus 'Baby Moon' is a super choice for a container placed near a doorway, where passers-by can appreciate its warm and uplifting scent. Image by Beth Otway

Many daffodil cultivars produce flowers that change colour as they age. As the flowers of Narcissus 'Pueblo' open, the blooms display lemon yellow coloured petals, which are complemented by a slightly more golden coloured yellow

trumpet. As these same flowers age, the outer petals fade to white. At first it seems as if the trumpet of Narcissus 'Pueblo' will retain its yellow colouration, but eventually the whole daffodil flower turns a delicate shade of ivory, remaining like this for a longer time period than you might expect, before the flowers eventually fade. I planted fifty Narcissus 'Pueblo' bulbs for my trial. These

stem producing an average of 3 flowers, creating a colourchanging spectacle of 420 flowers which lasted for 40 days.

During my daffodil trial, one daffodil cultivar stood out as being particularly attractive to ladybirds. I only spotted one or two ladybirds, at most, on all of the other nineteen

different daffodil cultivars that were grown for my trial, throughout the entire duration of the trial. Yet whenever I so much as glanced at the Narcissus 'Minnow' plants, I spotted a number of different ladybirds. This was consistent throughout the trial - I spotted a number of ladybirds on the Narcissus 'Minnow' plants whenever I assessed this trial. Devil's PunchBOWL: Bowl:HIGH High Road Valley DEVIL'S PUNCH ROAD ANDand PINE Pine VALLEY After the construction of the Hindhead Tunnel, the old winding Portsmouth Road was returned to nature and is now a glorious scenic walk where you can breathe the air of the moorland far away from traffic, with huge open views. The route is simple, making this a sociable walk with time to chat (or meditate) without the risk of going astray. There are no nettles on this walk so shorts are wearable. There is one potentially muddy section just after Highfield Farm so, except in a dry summer, you will find boots a blessing. Your dog can also come on this adventure. For full maps and more details, visit www.fancyfreewalks.org.

• THE WALK 1. From the back of the car park, go to the famous viewpoint over the Punch Bowl to take in some of the landscape that will soon be under your feet. Turn right in the direction of the Sailor’s Stroll walk. Immediately keep straight ahead, avoiding a left fork with a wooden gate. In 150m, you meet a very wide crossing track with a slanting information board explaining about the old main Portsmouth Road that used to come through here before the tunnel was built. Turn left on this generous sandy/ grassy path. So many of us still remember the scenic traffic jams as lorries, cars and buses ground their way round the curves on this road, and the congestion coming from the southwest on the long crawl up to Hindhead. What a difference! There is no trace of the old road surface – in fact it is no longer level but takes on the natural contour of the hillside. It is certainly hard to imagine two lines of traffic speeding along this road. The Hindhead tunnel was opened in 2011 and this reThe Walk landscaping began shortly afterwards. Highfield 5

The path bends left, all the time with terrific views to your left. The relay mast on the other side will be on your return stretch. 2. After a pleasant 1¼ km, you see a small plantation of trees across the route and your path winds through them, now on a narrower course. In 100m or so, you come to a T-junction where a track comes down from your right. Go left and, in 20m, go right, joining a surfaced drive. In 200m, a tarmac bridleway joins you from the left. From this point, stay on this tarmac drive, ignoring a crossing byway and ignoring a footpath shortly after on your right. After ½ km on this easy surface you pass a milestone showing that you are half way between Liphook and Godalming, whilst the roar of the new Portsmouth Road gets more and more obvious. In a further ½ km you come through a gate with the narrow Boundless Road on your right and the A3 road itself just beyond. Keep left, into the National Trust Punch Bowl Lane car park. 3. With the main A3 road on your right, go to the end of the car park and turn left at a fingerpost on a dirt drive uphill, marked as a byway and with the reassuring sign ‘Café 2 miles’ (although this walk will take a more roundabout route). You come through a large wooden gate to avoid a cattle grid and pass a weedy pond on your left. Note the small flecks of tarmac along these paths, indicating their importance in past decades. 300m from the road, you reach a fork with red arrows. Take the right fork, going past (or over) another cattle grid. Your track curves right and leads down to a wide sunken track under banks of tall beeches. Veer right on this track, passing a bucolic landscape on your left. You pass a house and quickly arrive at the hamlet of Highfield with a junction and a 4-way fingerpost. 4. Turn left on a tarmac drive and, by a house, keep right steeply down a slope. (Riders often turn left and sharp right up a narrow path rather than risk the slope, as you can too.) The route is now a dirt track which may be muddy in winter. It curves left to reach a ford over a stream bed in an area rich with ferny fronds and tree roots. Ignore a footpath on the right and use the footbridge to stay dry shod. Your track resumes uphill, soon more steeply, climbing out of the gulch and passing meadows and gardens,

becoming a surfaced drive. You meet a tarmac lane at a bend. Ignore a bridleway on your left and the lane on your right and keep straight on, joining the lane ahead. (The grassy path up a slope just to its right is private and not an alternative footway.) 5. The lane soon curves right past the picturesque Upper Ridgeway Farm and its reedy pond. Stay on this quiet lane all the time, avoiding tracks on your right and avoiding a bridleway on your left as the lane bends right. You pass Glenhead on your left then the paddocks of Hyde Hill Farm and, on your right, the fabulous timbered Hyde Farm House which is Grade-II listed. On your right is a long green valley which must be horse heaven. The lane suddenly takes a right hairpin. Leave the lane here by turning left at a small fingerpost, just after the entrance driveway of Woodlands. 6. The path runs straight into the deep forest. Soon the area on your right is more open, due to restoration of the ancient lowland heath. (An info board soon tells the story of the Countryside Restoration Trust.) Later, ignore swing-gates on your left and stay on the main path at all times. After 800m on this path, you reach a multiple junction in a clearing with a marker post. Ignore paths ahead and to your right and instead keep well over to the left of the marker post, on a path which runs close to the sloping pine forest on your left. Soon you are in a V-shaped valley with pine slopes on both sides. Follow this austere lonely path, keeping straight ahead at a marker post after 300m. If there is a choice of paths it makes no difference because the valley confines you. After a dense patch of rhododendrons, you are joined by overhead wires. The path now climbs out of the forest and curves left as it comes up to meet a fingerpost and a surfaced driveway. 7. Turn right on the drive. You reach a major junction of tracks at Highcombe Edge under the big relay tower, with a small car parking area on your left. Avoid a semi-tarmac drive straight ahead and

instead veer left on a wide level dirt track leading through woods. Soon there is a bench on your right with fine views into the Punch Bowl. Keep straight on at a fingerpost, soon reaching the viewpoint and parking area where the walk began.

National Eczema Week • LOCAL They will also be providing people with the opportunity to come together to share their stories through a range of National Eczema Week events across the UK.

THE National Eczema Society is a registered charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living with eczema. They offer information and support through our free telephone and email helplines, online through Facebook and through our network of local support groups. When you have eczema it’s easy to feel isolated and as though you are the only one battling with this frustrating, challenging and, currently, incurable skin condition, which affects more than 6 million people in the UK. Knowledge is power and the more you know about the condition and the particular triggers that can cause it to worsen, the better equipped you are to take control of the situation. That’s why this year’s National Eczema Week (16th–24th September) will focus on the power of sharing eczema stories in the on-going battle with this condition. Eczema treatments and triggers can prevent you from experiencing life in the same, spontaneous way as others and leave you feeling exposed and vulnerable. As everyone’s experience of eczema is slightly different, it’s important that they gather and share as many stories as possible, both in the run-up to and during National Eczema Week, so that everyone can find a story in the collection that they can relate to. By gathering together shared experiences of the condition, they will create a library of ideas that other patients and their carers can then try themselves in terms of identifying their own triggers and managing the insatiable urge to scratch. If you would like to be a part of this unique project simply record (audio or video) your eczema story and send it to info@eczema.org.

Jottings Jottings is your FREE community noticeboard for charities, local events, groups and information, compiled by Nick and Angie Crisell. To feature here, please email us at jottings@vantagepublishing.co.uk by the first Friday of the month prior to month of publication. Please note that space is limited and inclusion cannot be guaranteed. In August we did something we’ve never done before and will be lucky to do again. We attended a 100th birthday celebration lunch. The star of the show was my Auntie Eileen and the lunch, held in a delightful pub in Kent, was attended by 26 relatives. She is still living alone in her home, totally with it and still happy to recount memories of her childhood and her time in the WRENS during WWII. When she walked into the restaurant and sat down at the table, the first thing she said was “I’m gasping for a drink” – I think it runs in the family! Oh and there was a signed birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen on the table. A few days after the lunch we all received phone calls thanking us so much for being there! Roll on the 101st!

Chiddingfold Cinema Friday 1st September 8pm They are screening the acclaimed film’ Viceroy’s House’, starring Hugh Bonneville as Lord Mountbatten and Gillian Anderson as Lady Edwina. It is about the last Viceroy’s attempt to oversee the smooth (but preferably rapid) withdrawal of the British from India, but a peaceful transition is threatened by sectarian and religious divisions.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the servants' quarters, a young manservant and maid are falling in love and facing obstacles of their own. It’s a 12A. Then on Friday 15th September at 8pm they are showing ‘Their Finest’, starring Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy. A former secretary is drafted in as screenwriter to provide some much-needed female input for a major new propaganda film production, intended to help raise the public's morale in the face of the Blitz and hopefully persuade America to join the war. All that's missing is a script, some reliable actors and a clue where to start! It’s a 12A. Tickets are £6 adults, £3 under 15’s and available from www.chiddingfoldcinema.com. The Arts Society - West Sussex PROFILE • work was extraordinary for children of that age - vibrant, diverse and quite brilliant. The children who came to visit were thrilled to see their work displayed. There were also three huge models of birds, one of which was seen on Springwatch Unsprung on the BBC in June. The Petworth Literary Festival in the Autumn will offer another opportunity to involve local schools in a poetry workshop, sponsored by Young Arts at The Arts Society - West Sussex Church trails are organised for children visiting several historic churches in our area. Heritage volunteers also assist at the Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton.

THE worldwide association known as NADFAS, the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society has changed its name to The Arts Society. With groups mainly in the UK, but also in Spain and as far away as New Zealand and Australia, it is felt that the simpler name will be more memorable and much easier to understand.

Meetings are held in Fittleworth Village Hall on the first Tuesday of each month followed by tea or coffee. The annual membership is £45 and visitors are most welcome for £5.

Each individual society holds a talk once a month, given by inspiring and distinguished speakers on any subject connected with the Arts. Special interest days, visits and holidays are also organised by each group. West Sussex DFAS will be known as The Arts Society - West Sussex. It is a very friendly society and this year it has had talks on a variety of subjects, from Grayson Perry to the Great Twelve Livery Companies and Jane Austen. Visits included a trip to Goldsmiths' Hall in London and Chawton House Library in Hampshire. They were very successful and most interesting. The society has an exciting calendar of events planned for 2018. This includes talks on Sicillian Renaissance and how Art & Design helped the cause of the Suffragettes. There will be visits to Freemasons' Hall and the Soane Museum as well as Osterley Park and House. To honour our charitable status and to support our local community there is also a very active 'Young Arts' section. Artists are sponsored to go into schools for specific projects, and as part of the recent Petworth Festival, the PopUp Art Exhibition was organised in the United Reformed Church, involving 15 local primary schools.
