â&#x20AC;˘ THE EDITOR'S NOTE As ever, it was a real treat to get to this year's Chelsea Flower Show. By chance, I also managed to bump into our lovely gardening writer Beth Otway when I went to see our advertiser, David Neale from NealeRichards Garden Design, who was showing a garden he had created in conjunction with Silent Pool Gin distillers. It was a really lovely creation and we were all delighted that the garden was awarded a SIlver-Gilt Medal by the RHS. Even better, it was chosen by the public as the Best Space to Grow garden. Beth has written a piece in this issue to celebrate this great achievement. I think a large Silent Pool gin and tonic is definitely in order! Speaking of gardens, I was fortunate to go and visit Frogmore House in early June, which was open to the public through the National Garden Scheme. What a treat! While the house itself, the venue for the evening reception for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is perhaps a little disappointing, the gardens more than made up for it. Frogmore's garden and lake are largely the creation of Queen Charlotte, the house's first royal resident. The Queen had a passionate interest in botany and introduced over 4,000 trees and shrubs to create a picturesque landscape. In the last century, the garden was restored by Queen Mary and enhanced for The Queen's Silver Jubilee. It is a very English garden with majestic trees, lovely plants and very neat lawns which contrast beautufully with areas of wildness. The estate is home to the Royal Mausoleum, containing the tombs of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It is not open to the public, but you can see the Royal Burial Ground, which was the final resting place of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor amongst other members of the Royal Family. Worth a visit!

Food and Drink Make it easy on yourself. Many parents have said to me packed lunch boxes are an easy alternative to a buffet. You can pre-pack these on the day or in advance and then hand out to the children readymade. It also makes it easier to deal with any dietary requirements you have.

Having a list on the go is essential, so you know that everything is covered, including guests, food, decorations etc and with any party there is always a budget, stick to it. PLANNING THE PERFECT CHILDREN'S PARTY Partyware Ah the theme - the integral part to any party. Pinterest is brilliant for ideas, but don’t get sucked in to thinking you can do everything, just do what you know you can do.

them. Many are reasonable priced and incredibly adaptable to any dietary needs you have. Failing that, the supermarkets always have a brilliant range too for something quick and easy.

With any theme you can have themed banners, cups, plates, napkins, table covers, party bags, bells and whistles, but why? Mix it up a little - use plain colour table covers/ napkins, after all they mop up the mess and compliment everything nicely and these can be more cost effective. Decorations and Party Bags Balloons are an easy way to decorate any venue and you have so many options. Put loads on the floor to kick about, tie up bunches, get some super shape foils and even large confetti balloons. Literally any budget can be met.

I recently came across a good idea at a couple of parties. The parents creatively did their own baking, making the main birthday cake and then also a tray bake on the side with the same icing as the birthday cake. This was usually then pre-sliced and already packaged for the children to take away, meaning you’re not having to dash around to get the cake all sliced up at the end of the party. Plus it means you get to taste the fruits of your labour at home later! And finally... timescale Out of everything, my advice would be to go back to where we started with a list, but have a timescale of how you plan to do everything, especially the week building up and the day. It doesn’t have to be a full on spreadsheet, just a note of when you plan to do your party bags, make food, bake a cake and of course set up.

The best part is you can always give them to the children at the end of the party, simply tied to cake, attached to party bag or a simple gift. Bunting is also brilliant and many venues these days already have hooks in the walls so you can hang it easily. Any colour suits and it's brilliant for in your garden afterwards. There are so many ways you can decorate a venue, but always remember the children will do a brilliant job of filling it with their joy and noise.

Entertainment: Lots of options here. Bouncy castles, old school games, kiddies' disco, soft play, zoo lab with their bugs and insects or book a brilliant, crazy entertainer. Do what you are prepared to do and what you are happy to pay for.

VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY

Phil Kemp meets two groups of local volunteers and is captivated by their enthusiasm and dedication. I WAS invited by two local organisations to meet their volunteers and find out for myself, not only what volunteering involves, but also how the community benefits directly from their efforts. The groups contribute enormously to the continued success of two completely different enterprises, but the similarity between them in terms of how much the volunteers enjoy contributing, and how they personally gain from social interaction and learning new skills is striking. Surrey Wildlife Trust’s volunteer co-ordinator Anna Fosbery provided some background, whilst we walked through the beautiful heathland of Bagmoor Common near Elstead to meet up with volunteers on one of their practical conservation days. “The trust’s main objective is to create a landscape in Surrey that is rich in wildlife and valued by all. One of the key ways that we achieve that is by involving volunteers,” said Anna, as we followed a recently-cleared trail in which fence posts were being erected. “They contribute their time and energy bringing a range of expertise from very varied backgrounds as well. Some are retired, some still working in various industries. We also have young people coming along for work experience.” I could hear the lively chatter of the volunteers as we approached and found them having a lunch break with assorted snacks in hand. The group of five women and four men of varying ages, led by task leader Susie Robson, were

undoubtedly enjoying their day, all smiles as I was introduced by Anna. “I have a huge amount of respect for the dedication that volunteers put in when they give their time, energy and expertise to a cause that they passionately believe in,” Anna explained. “They contribute so much. In the last financial year volunteers across Surrey contributed a total of 8,814 days.” As I was absorbing that breath-taking statistic Anna asked the volunteers if they’d like to have a chat with me.

VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY “Having decided to wind down my consultancy business I wanted to find something a little bit different to do, meet people, and get out into the great Surrey countryside,” explained Sarah Brown. “I come along every Monday, rain or shine. It’s great to get off the beaten track and go to places that you’d never usually go to. It’s really varied and I love getting physical as well. But if you’re not that fit there is always a job that you can do in the group. I had tennis-elbow for a good seven months but was still able to contribute.” Fellow volunteer John Tallon agreed: “I retired at Christmas after 40 years working in an office and wanted to do something useful, healthy and outdoors. With the Trust we do a variety of different things. At the moment we are working on fencing because grazing cattle are being brought in to keep the scrub down in some areas. I have also done scrub clearance, and rebuilt footpath steps on one of the local commons where they’d been washed away in the winter rains. You also get to see some interesting wildlife whilst you’re out and about, and learn from the interesting people who are co-volunteers.” As some members of the group started to pack away their lunch containers and pick up an assortment of different tools to return to the task in hand, Sarah added: “A very memorable moment for me was when out on the chalk grasslands I saw fields and fields of our native pyramid orchids that hadn’t been there before. But now that the area has been cleared their habitat has been restored.” The enthusiasm in Sarah’s voice was uplifting. “I’m also doing what the Trust calls ‘lookaring’ - which means I’m out checking the cattle on the grazing compartments. I help check to see that they’re all together and look out for their general health.”

I wanted to keep active, and part of that included returning something to the local community.

“I’ve always been a keen birdwatcher, and enjoyed butterflies without necessarily knowing that much about them,” said John. “But with the trust, people I’m working with are specialists in butterflies or insects or plants and you get to learn a great deal from them. I’ve seen several species of butterfly that I haven’t previously seen. As a consequence, I have now volunteered also for the Butterfly Conservation to do some work with them as well.”

two experienced volunteers who were keen to explain why they enjoy working at the museum. “I had always wanted to volunteer here because, although it’s not a very big museum, it’s very friendly and very interesting,” said Jan Francom. “When I left work to spend some time with my elderly mother it gave me the opportunity to join as a gallery steward. “I do help out with other tasks such as running the café and supporting the front desk volunteers, but I can move around the museum with customers to help them. And having volunteered here for almost eight years I also now assist Alison, the curator, with the collection.” Having had the opportunity to make previous visits to the museum, located in the town’s High Street, I had been quickly absorbed by the interesting

VOLUNTEERING IN THE COMMUNITY displays introducing visitors to not just the history, people and industry of Godalming, but a lot more besides. And like other local museums in the area, volunteers are able to greatly enhance the visitor experience. Peter Stevenson, also now retired after spending over 40 years in the public sector, joined in: “I wanted to keep active, and part of that included returning something to the local community. Volunteering for half a day a week on the front desk gave me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and help them. For example Canadians, Americans and Australians who want to trace their roots, and also follow up on World War I – because locally, particularly at Witley, there was a transit station.” The museum also actively engages with local schools, as Peter explained: “The curator and education volunteers also run a whole string of workshops with schools, that can either be done here in the museum or through school visits. When they come here they get to understand how a museum works, with volunteers helping stimulate interactions with the displays.” “Schools also borrow loan boxes with artefacts, activities and books inside, and my job is to check them when they are returned,” added Jan. “I get the chance to wade through them and find out lots of interesting things which I’d not necessarily have known before.” Jan pointed to the wall of the Resources Room where we were sitting. “Here’s an example of getting involved in discovering really interesting things. This large painting was donated by a local firm who were based at Westbrook Mill. It was painted by John Baker in 1984 and depicts a fantasy view of Godalming in the late 19th century, and it They took a lot of research to find out exactly what buildings contribute were in the imaginary scene their time he’s created. We call it the Godalming Capriccio, and and energy visitors are always fascinated bringing by it.”

From its original vantage point in the tower of The Pepperpot in the High Street it would have seen soldiers returning from the Napoleonic War, and the arrival of the railways in the 1850s and 60s.”

Angela was smiling broadly, clearly an indication as to how positively she responds to the enthusiasm from their volunteers. “Jan and Peter are clearly extremely interested and interesting volunteers. But you don’t need a lot of prior knowledge to come and make a great contribution here. We usually start people off on a role downstairs, and as a gallery steward, where you can move around with visitors. So on any given day we need four volunteers front of house – people work a morning or afternoon shift. In addition to that, we have our wonderful local studies library which is staffed by a separate group of trained librarians and local historians who give you free access to an awful lot of information that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get to. “The majority of our volunteers are of retirement age but we do have a few mums with school-age children, and a few of our younger volunteers may be on university holidays or perhaps on a gap year. Really all we expect is that you are keen to help the museum, that you have an interest in your town, and you are willing to come here with an open mind. At this year’s show, I particularly enjoyed visiting the Silent Pool Gin Garden, which was designed by Surrey-based garden designer David Neale. For his design for the Silent Pool Gin Garden, David took inspiration from the Silent Pool distillers, the Surrey landscape and David’s family holidays in Dorset. David’s aim was to create a garden using UK-sourced materials, filled with fabulous, British-grown plants, in calming shades of blue, white, and copper, to create a relaxing space to unwind and enjoy a drink, perhaps a Silent Pool gin and tonic? This beautifully-crafted garden was awarded a Silver-Gilt Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society judges, while the public voted in their masses, choosing the Silent Pool Gin Garden as the Best Space to Grow Garden, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018. A great accolade and achievement! NealeRichards Garden Design was formed by David Neale and Leigh Richards ten years ago. Together David and Leigh design and build private, public, and commercial gardens throughout the Surrey Hills, London and the South East. Both Leigh and David studied at Merrist Wood College, and David also holds a degree in fine art from the University of Creative Arts in Farnham. We often think of low-maintenance gardens as being rather staid, dull, and uninspiring, but David Neale’s design for the Silent Pool Gin Garden demonstrates rather wonderfully that a small, low maintenance garden can be surprisingly beautiful, relaxing, and luxurious. Garden is a marvellously restorative and re-energising space, where David’s design, planting, and clever use of materials combine to create an exquisite garden, which is a lovely space to spend time in. The Silent Pool Gin Garden’s water features were inspired by the Silent Pool near Albury, where the Silent Pool Distillery is based, while the garden’s planting incorporates many of the botanicals that Silent Pool gin is crafted from, including irises, Angelica archangelica, chamomile, and lavender. It was a real pleasure to visit the Silent Pool Gin Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018 as I was entirely charmed by this truly delightful garden, as it seems were so many others! Volvo XC40 • ROAD TEST

VOLVO, IT seems, are on a roll. Once beloved only of a small yet discerning band of folk, these days they are a company who are regularly in the news. Whether declaring their latest outstanding safety record (nobody has lost their life in a car-to-car accident in an XC90 – ever), outlining their plans for electrification of their range, or announcing yet another consumer award, they have emerged from the margins of the car world with significantly increased sales volumes, bucking the recent trend for declining new car markets. Much of this success is due to the impressive new models being released in recent years, for example the XC60 SUV on which we reported a few months ago. Their latest release, the XC40 compact SUV, is set to grow Volvo market share even further. Indeed, for a car which only hit the showrooms at the end of February, the UK order books have been inundated, with the highspecification First Edition model selling out within days of the launch. In fact the success of the XC40 seems to have caught Volvo out, for if you try to order one today you could well be quoted a delivery date into 2019! However, Volvo have already increased production capacity so this should be only a temporary blip. So why has the XC40 become an instant hit in a market sector that is incredibly competitive, with products available from just about every manufacturer? Doubtless the halo effect from the bigger XC60 and XC90 SUV models set the scene, but the XC40 is much more than a mini-me version of the bigger models, having its own distinctly different styling. Its British designer, Ian Kettle, refers to it as looking like a tough little robot, and that sums the chunky, robust yet clean styling up quite well. Inside, the clean, simple styling theme continues, however the all-important dials and

controls in front of the driver are identical to those of the bigger, more expensive XC60 and XC90. It’s also deceptively spacious, belying its relatively compact dimensions, and is in true Volvo fashion outstandingly comfortable. Specification levels, and of course price, vary with each model, but significantly even the cheapest models are equipped with many safety and other features only available as expensive options on other brands, such as the fully digital instrument panel and the superb 9” centre touchscreen. Small wonder, then that the XC40 has rapidly gained accolade after accolade including several Car of the Year awards. Indeed, it’s so impressive that this petrolhead, who would once never have been seen in a Volvo, has done the unthinkable – I bought one myself!

What's your Exercise type during YOUR summer holidays? Jo Butler from Physio 1to1 offers some holiday exercise advice I'M WRITING this article whilst at Funchal airport. I'm on my way home from Madeira reflecting on how people differ in their approach to exercising whilst on holiday. There seem to be two main types of approaches: Type 1: I'm on holiday and I just want to kick back and relax Type 2: I need to exercise whatever form it may take. Normally I would put myself into the Type 1 group, happy for a chance to relax and read a novel, sitting by a pool or even better, by the sea listening to the waves. I can happily go a week before that need to exercise starts to creep up on me. My husband is definitely in the Type 2 group, regardless of where he is. We had a particularly memorable holiday a few years back, in Kefalonia, where he was followed by barking stray dogs as he attempted to keep up with his regular routine of running. I could hear them chasing him up the road! Type 1 is fine for a while, as we all need some time to relax. However if you are

recovering from an injury or know that you need to keep moving to stay injury free or keep the weight off, then you need to find a compromise. Top tips for all you Type 1s out there: • As you normally clean your teeth twice daily (hopefully for the recommended 2 minutes), you can add 4 minutes of exercises easily into your daily routine. This could be anything from balancing on one leg to stretching out your calves, hamstrings or single leg dips. Whatever you know you might need to work on. • Take the stairs not the lift. • Walk more, take in the new sights. If you have a Fitbit you can set yourself a target and monitor your number of steps per day. • Walking on sand is a great work out for your legs and walking barefoot on sand is great for the muscles in your feet. So put that book down and enjoy a stroll in the surf. The waves lapping at your feet will challenge your balance and make your muscles work harder. • Be aware of the ‘sitting sickness’. Although reading a book is often a rare pleasure to enjoy on holiday, don't get too lost in your book. Avoid sitting for more than an hour, get up and move around a bit. • Be aware of the balance between exercise and eating. That combination of ‘all you can eat‘ buffets and a quiet relax by a pool is an easy trap to fall into. Just a week of overindulging and being sedentary can take months of hard work to make up for.

WHAT'S YOUR EXERCISE TYPE DURING SUMMER HOLIDAYS? If you fall into the Type 2 category, then it's great that you are already motivated to exercise but make sure you stay safe and injuryfree. Summer holidays also offer opportunities to try something new, windsurfing, scuba diving, paddle boarding, rock climbing, are often all exciting new possibilities but will potentially challenge different muscle groups than you are used to. Top tips for all you Type 2s out there: • • •

Make sure you warm up properly before the activity, cold muscles are the fastest way to get injured. Take time to stretch out your muscles after a new activity, it will hurt a lot less the next day but will also help reduce your chance of injury. Ask a local where the best place is to run, both for scenery and for safety. If there are poor roads or lots of stray dogs, think twice before going for a run on your own, or be prepared to run a lot faster (running away from barking dogs is a sure way to beat your personal best!).

Avoid (if possible) a dramatic change in the type of exercise. Suddenly running lots of hills or long distances on a beach is a sure fire way of causing an injury. Always let someone know if you plan to go for a solo cycle or run. Let them know roughly where you plan to go and how long you are likely to take. There are many apps you can use, such as Strava, that use GPS which can help track your movements and send a beacon to a named person if you get into trouble. This is always useful if you are out on your own whether running or on a bicycle. It will also help reassure a worried partner, parent, friend that you are okay.

Mixed Berry Cheesecake

Strawberry Rocky Road

This beautiful cheesecake is the perfect centrepiece to impress guests. With its pale pink colour and a bounty of berries on top itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delicious too. Add edible flowers for an extra touch.

Our strawberry rocky road is a decadent and quick way to indulge. Whip up a batch when you're expecting visitors, just don't expect it to last long! Its the ultimate naughty but nice snack.

Ingredients:

Method:

125g digestive biscuits, 75g ginger biscuits, 100g melted butter, 300g strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, 150g icing sugar, 400g cream cheese, 300g double cream, extra berries to decorate. Serves 8-10.

1. Line the bottom of a 23cm springform cake tin with greaseproof paper. Put the biscuits into a food processor and whizz into crumbs. Pour in the melted butter and whizz again then tip into the cake tin. Use the bottom of a glass or back of a spoon to press down evenly then refrigerate to set. 2. Put the berries into a pan with the icing sugar and heat. Stir and mash the berries until they break down, allow to bubble for a few minutes until the mixture looks like jam. Allow to cool for a few minutes then sieve into a bowl and leave to cool. 3. Beat the cream cheese and cream together then whip in the berry juice until well combined. 4. Spoon the cream mixture over the biscuit base, level the top and return to the fridge to set for 2 hours or until firm. 5. To serve, carefully remove the cake tin, use a pallet knife to separate the greaseproof paper from the base. Slide onto a serving plate and top with extra berries.

400g plain chocolate, 2 tbsp golden syrup, 50g unsalted butter, 250g strawberries, hulled and halved, 1 apple peeled and cut into chunks, 100g blanched almonds, icing sugar to dust. Serves 6. 1. Line an 8â&#x20AC;? square tin or small roasting tray with greaseproof paper. 2. Melt the chocolate, syrup and butter over a pan of simmering water. 3. In a bowl, mix the strawberries, apple, nuts and cherries. Once the chocolate has melted, pour over the fruit and nuts and stir to combine. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, and allow to set. 4. Turn the Rocky Road out, and cut into chunks before dusting with icing sugar. Recipes taken with permission from www.berryworld.com.

Sensational summer strawberries FOOD & DRINK •

Hazelnut Meringue Cake with Strawberries & Raspberries This as a celebration cake, perfect for special occasions. The layers of meringue with the fruit in between look very pretty and it's super easy to make ahead and assemble last minute.

Ingredients:

250g whole hazelnuts, 8 egg whites, 300g caster sugar, 200ml double cream, 200g strawberries, hulled and sliced in half, 100g raspberries, icing sugar to decorate. Serves 8.

5. When done, take out of the oven, cool in the tins and then carefully remove. 6. Whip the cream until it forms soft peaks and spread a third of the mixture onto one of the meringues. Add a layer of strawberries and raspberries, and then top with the second meringue. Repeat the process with the second and third meringue topping the final meringue with the remaining cream and strawberries until you end up with a top layer of strawberries. To finish, sprinkle with icing sugar! Cook’s tip: Run a knife around the outside of the cake tins to release the meringues and upturn them to get them out of the tin. Carefully peel off the lining paper.

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/Gas mark 4. 2. Blitz the hazelnuts in a blender until very fine. 3. Take a clean, grease-free bowl and add the egg whites. Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks. Gradually add the caster sugar spoon by spoon, whisk well in between. Continue until all the sugar has been added and the mixture is thick and glossy, then fold in the hazelnuts. 4. Divide mixture between 3 greased and lined Victoria sandwich tins and then bake it in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, until golden.

Club of Godalming still maintains a slightly formal tradition being only for men and expecting a smart dress code; the second Godalming club, known as The Milford Probus Club, has a somewhat more relaxed dress code and welcomes lady members. The Probus movement is the result of the initiatives of two notable Rotarians. In 1965 in Welwyn Garden City Fred Carhill had the bright idea of starting a club for retired professional and businessmen. The following year, Harold Blanchard formed a similar club in Caterham which was named Probus, derived from the words ‘Professional’ and ‘Businessmen’.

PROBUS IS a worldwide organisation for semi-retired and retired professional business men and women. All Probus Clubs in Great Britain are autonomous, making their own rules regarding time, place and format of meetings. There are several Probus clubs in the VantagePoint distribution area, all of which have slightly different arrangements but all follow the original ideal of providing a gathering place for like-minded retired and semi-retired people who want to extend their circle of friends. Godalming has two Probus clubs, both of which meet near the town centre. The original Probus

The movement has spread since 1965 so that there are now well over 2,000 Probus Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland alone. There are others in several European countries, South Africa, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, India and Malaysia. Probus members can visit other clubs by arrangement. The original Probus Club of Godalming was one of the first to be formed and celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. The Milford Probus club was formed in 2001 to accommodate the people on the waiting list for the Godalming club. To keep a friendly informal atmosphere, membership is limited to 70. Both clubs meet in Godalming every month for lunch followed by a talk which can be on a variety of subjects ranging from the serious to the very amusing. Naturally, with such a wide range of ages from 50 to 90+ there is a wide range of experience at our meetings, and always someone interesting to talk to. Because of the wide range of contacts and interests of the members, visits are arranged to all sorts of venues such as the historic dockyard at Portsmouth and the amazing Mary Rose museum. On another occasion members had a rare opportunity to visit the hallowed grounds of the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon. The tour included a visit to the museum; passing through the player’s entrance and sitting on Centre Court. Members said that it was a strange feeling to be in the grounds when Wimbledon Tennis was virtually deserted (picture right)! Prospective members are invited to attend a meeting without obligation. Park your car near to Greenfield Beach and follow the leisurely ‘White Sands Walk’ to discover the charming tranquility of Chinaman’s Beach and Hyams Beach, famous for having the world’s whitest sand. 2. Central Tilba A complete contrast to Jervis Bay, this tiny town is a delightful inland detour and takes you back to the period of the Australian gold rush. Take time to explore the vividlypainted shops and cafes, to admire the stunning vista of the surrounding area and the imposing Gulaga (formerly known as Mount Dromedary) and stretch your legs by taking a stroll up the hill behind the Dromedary Hotel.

4. Metung By this stage of your journey, you will have crossed into Victoria. Metung is a pretty harbour where you can hire a boat for an afternoon and enjoy the last of the coastline before you head inland towards Melbourne. With ice cream shops a plenty, this is a beautiful place to stop and relax by the sail boats. 3. Ben Boyd National Park This is a hotspot for wildlife and heritage buildings, and with 10,485 hectares to explore, it is likely that you will only have a taster of this stunning national park. Start your visit in Eden, a former whaling town, where whales are famously seen along the coastline. If you want to delve further into the national park, the 30km ‘Light to Light’ walk from Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lighthouse is the best way to explore it (you don’t have to walk all the way!), with beautiful views out into the South Pacific. Golden Auriculas • GARDENING

With Beth Otway shows around the country, where they won awards and even gold medals for their plants, but with the Auriculas having such a special connection to his father, Simon understandably decided to take a break from exhibiting Auriculas at the Chelsea Flower Show, and W & S Lockyer did not exhibit at Chelsea for the following two years. But this year, Simon and Louise returned with their Auriculas, creating an exhibit in memory of Bill Lockyer, for which the RHS judges awarded them another gold medal. Bill Lockyer was a true gentleman, a family man, and a great friend, and I know that he would be so proud of Simon and Louise winning another gold with their Auriculas!

I LOVE to visit the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. For me, this is the most prestigious and exciting event of the horticultural calendar! I enjoy seeing Chelsea’s show gardens of every size and style, am always interested to discover the latest gardening products, and I really look forward to finding new favourite plants, whilst being reminded of old favourites. I so enjoy visiting Chelsea’s Grand Pavilion, which is filled with over one hundred exhibits created by expert growers and nurseries that seem to specialise in growing almost every kind of plant. W & S Lockyer are a family-run, independent specialist nursery that was started in Surrey in the late 1980s by Bill Lockyer and his then 13-year-old son, Simon Lockyer. Bill, his wife Joan, and their son Simon shared a love of gardening, and together they grew many plants, including double-flowered Auriculas, known as Florist’s Auriculas. As the Lockyers’ passion for Auriculas grew, they began exhibiting their plants at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, where they first showed their Auriculas alongside those of the legendary Auricula specialist, Brenda Hyatt, before moving on to host their own exhibits. Bill and Simon exhibited their Auriculas at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for over 20 years and they achieved their first Gold Medal together in 2012, repeating this success with consecutive gold medals in 2013, 2014, and 2015. As the Lockyers’ Auricula collection grew, they established a Plant Heritage National Collection of Florists Auriculas (the double flowered form). Sadly, and unexpectedly, Bill Lockyer passed away after a short illness in January 2016. Since his father’s passing, Simon has focused even more of his energy on running W & S Lockyer with his partner Louise Batchelor, who is also from a horticultural family – her father established Eleplants Nursery. W & S Lockyer continued their success at many of the RHS

Lurgashall to Petworth This interesting classic walk takes you through woods and fields and through Petworth Park and back. Lots of views. Enjoy a picnic in the park unless you are an NT member and can go to the café by the house. The walk was submitted by Guildford Rambling Club (see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk).

• THE WALK 1. With your back to the Noah’s Ark pub, cross the road by the Mill Lane/High Hampstead Lane junction to enter a field at the left-hand corner of the green. Follow a footpath along the right-hand side of the field. Leave at the first corner to drop down a little and cross a footbridge into a wood. Climb up into a wood and go out into a field. Walk along the righthand side to the first corner and, here, jink right a couple of yards to go left and through a gap into trees. Dip down and up, ignore a path right and continue straight on. Go straight across a field and out into a lane. 2. Turn right and walk a little way to find a signpost, left, at the side of a house and through a tall, wooden-slatted gate into the extended Petworth Estate. Now follow the tarmac lane for some 2 miles, at first through woods and then, with expansive views, between fields, crossing a number of cattle grids, passing a few houses down to the right and on the left and eventually reaching the side of a pretty lake – a possible rest stop. Continue on for another 300 yards to reach a cross track and turn left. Walk about ¼ mile to exit the estate at the A283, a very busy road. Turn right and walk about 600 yards along the wide verge to turn right into a car park inside Petworth Estate. 3. Exit from the back left-hand corner and walk along the wide grassy track heading out to the left across the park. Pass a lake, on your left-hand side, and, as you do so, fork a little right to climb up a hill. At the top continue forward but then swing down to

the right to reach the edge of another lake. At the closest point to this second lake, swing left and walk around the bottom of the hill towards Petworth House. If you are an NT member, there is a gate into the grounds and there is a café and there are toilets in the courtyard. If you are not and you are picnicking, do so outside the grounds, perhaps on the steps at the back of the house. 4. After lunch, with your back to the house, walk to the left. Ignore a quick fork left which heads towards a wall. Instead continue on, at first parallel to the wall, but, when you see a large fancy metalwork gate to your left, swinging a little right. Reach a stony track which takes you right to pass the left-hand end of a lake. Fork right and, now, follow the track for about ½ mile, climbing gently. Start to drop down with views and a smaller lake to the right. The track runs alongside a mesh fence for a while and, where that fence swings away to the left, follow it and walk across the grass along the flank of the slope. Follow the fence up the slope, swing more to the left and reach a corner by a stone wall and a gate out of the park. Go through and left up a few steps to a road. 5. Turn right and walk through a few houses in Upperton until reaching a phone box. Here, turn left down a dead end road which quickly becomes a track. Continue forward and, after 20 yards, fork right and immediately turn right. Walk along a corridor between fences and then between a fence and trees. At its end, continue forward along a wide grassy track. Reach a T-junction at a vineyard fence. Turn right and walk a few yards to take a gate, left, into the vineyard. Walk, at the top of the slope, to the far side. Go straight across a road and continue forward on a grassy track in a hedge/hedge corridor. See an impressive large white house ahead and reach a fence where you turn right and walk, again in a hedge/hedge corridor. At a 3-way signpost, go left. Ignore a right. Immediately take a wide track left and, again immediately, turn right by an entrance gate. 6. Follow the track, with a fence on your left and a wood on your right and, after a while, woods on both sides and a steepening slope dropping away on the right-hand side. Be careful if the narrow path is slippery! Continue straight past a 3-way signpost and on until you reach a 4-way signpost in a dip.

Here, turn right. Climb a few feet up and then drop down steps to the side of a house and a road. Follow the road to the right. Cross a river bridge. Reach, on your right, Salmonsbridge Farm. Immediately beyond it take a footpath right, through a few trees and into a field. Walk anticlockwise around the field. Past the first corner, find a footpath right and enter trees again. Immediately turn left, ignoring an arrow pointing forward. Continue until, just before power lines, turning right at a signpost. Ignore a left and enter a field. Walk along the left-hand side to exit at the first corner. 7. Go over a stile into another field and again walk along the left-hand side. Reach a horse trough and turn left to go over a stile and onto a wide track. Turn right. Pass a house and a lake on your left and cross a small ford. Immediately thereafter, take a footpath right and into a field. Turn left and walk along the side of this and the next field. At a 3-way signpost, jink left into another field and immediately turn right to follow its side. Walk anticlockwise around the edge to reach the barns of River Bridge Farm and, beyond them, a road. Turn right and walk along the road, passing a lake on your lefthand side. Immediately before a T-junction with another road, turn left through a gap in the hedge to follow a path up and along the side of a field.

8. Continue forward along the field edge and along the edge of further fields until reaching a signpost right. Ignore it. Instead turn right though gap a couple of yards beyond it and into the narrow end of another field. Move over to the hedge on the other side and follow it left and up a slight slope until you pass a wide gap on your right and, 20 yards beyond it, find an exit down onto a road. Turn left and walk up to pass Lurgashall Village Hall and reach the green.

Cranleigh Sub Aqua Club At the end of February they celebrated the reopening of Cranleigh School pool with an excellent supper at the Three Horseshoes and training resumed on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the pool’s warm water. The season’s diving started in March and diving continues throughout the summer at two weekly intervals at sites along the south coast, on the Isle of Man and as far away as Scarpa Flow in the Orkneys, St Abbs in the North East, and St David’s in west Wales. Once the current group of trainees have completed their pool sessions, inland open water training dives will be made at Vobster before they embark on their first sea dive. It has also enabled over £50m to be raised for charity. They have a very useful and easy to use website, www.ngs. org.uk/find-a-garden. Home-made teas and cream teas will be available. Godalming Community Fridge This is a volunteer run food waste reduction project. They collect food from local businesses that is often at its best before date and make it freely available to anyone who wants to take it. They also accept food donations from individual households, but please don’t buy anything specifically for the fridge, they only want food that might otherwise go to waste.
