I recently went to a very interesting and informative tour of the Silent Pool Distillery near Albury, a fellow member of Surrey Hills Enterprises. Seeing that the price of petrol is rapidly falling reminded us of the following notice we saw recently in a pub in Dorset - the average human walks 900 miles a year and drinks 22 gallons of beer, which means the average human gets 41 miles to the gallon! Anyway, Happy Mother’s Day to all you mums and we hope you all have a lovely Easter holiday. Exhibition at Godalming Museum Tuesday 1st to Saturday 19th March A fascinating and atmospheric exhibition of photographs of local Commons is on show at Godalming Museum. Photographers Jane Ross and Anthea Clarke met nearly 10 years ago, and have worked together for several years to record images of Thursley and Rodborough Commons. Their photos reflect the impact of man and nature on these open spaces, and illustrate the people who use them and the changing seasons. Godalming Museum is located at 109a High Street, Godalming GU7 1AQ, and is opposite the Pepperpot. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. The Local Studies library is open in the afternoons from 1 pm to 4 pm. Light refreshments are available throughout the day and children are always welcome. There is a delightful Jekyll style garden at the rear of the museum and an excellent gift shop. Godalming Museum is run in partnership by Waverley Borough Council and Godalming Museum Trust. Apart from myself, my brother, brother in law, son and grandchildren all went there and, my son and daughter in law teach there. So I was delighted to be invited to the Grand Opening of their Nursery Section on 29th January. They have a lovely room (my old classroom!) that

opens onto a covered outdoor area overlooking the beautiful gardens. The little ones looked very contented if a little bemused at what was going on! The ribbon was duly cut by the Mayor and the Nursery declared fully open. It now means that you can start at Barrow Hills from 2 years old and stay until you are 13; great in terms of continuity. The beautiful surroundings were, of course, not appreciated by me when I was there! Ockford-Godalming Afternoon WI Wednesday 2nd March 2pm The Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 2pm at the Scout and Guide Headquarters, Seymour Road, off Eashing Lane, Godalming. On 2nd March there will be a talk by Andy Clarke entitled ‘Woofability’ and an exhibition of members’ pet photographs. On 6th April there will be a Sugarcraft Demonstration by Karen Hawkins and a competition for members of three cupcakes. As well as monthly meetings, outings and theatre trips are arranged throughout the year; also pub lunches, book reading evenings and regular craft sessions. The group welcomes new members. Is Pilates just for women? Definitely not..! Jo Butler, Chartered physiotherapist & Pilates instructor at Physio 1 to 1 tells us more. allows you to be fully aware of your body alignment as you make subtle focused movements. You don’t have to get in touch with your feminine side, chant or wear a leotard! This focus on perfect form (body alignment) and subtle controlled movements is what Pilates is about. What looks simple is in fact challenging to achieve. For example, a Pilates push-up might seem at first glance to be the same as a standard push up but the focus is different.

Men equally benefit from Pilates workouts. A man did invent the concept after all. Joseph Pilates came up with the idea that core muscles were key, way back in the 1920’s. Joseph Pilates was a professional boxer who was born a sickly child and he overcame his many disabilities by exercising. He developed his Pilates regimen over many years. Whilst he was held in a P.O.W. camp, during WW1, he started inventing machinery to assist and resist his exercises using the bed springs and other items available to make pulley systems. His exercise programme kept him and his fellow prisoners strong in both body and mind.

A healthy body is one that has an equal balance of strength and flexibility. Pilates develops long lean muscles that are strongest closest to the spine protecting your back, improving your posture and allowing more controlled movements of your arms and legs, in-fact providing the building block on which to base your strength and performance training. More and more athletes and sportsmen have turned to Pilates to improve their performance, be it body-builders, cricketers, footballers and, like Joseph Pilates himself, boxers. There’s nothing remotely ‘girly’ about it. The Pilates push-up

Pilates does involve a lot of mind over body processing, but don’t let that put you off. Engaging your mind Is Pilates a worthwhile exercise for men? To answer this we invited Vantage Point’s very own Marcus Atkins and a slightly more reluctant Stefan Reynolds, to join us for a Men’s Pilates class at Physio 1to1. Prior to the class Marcus was already a Pilates convert however Stefan was new to Pilates. We questioned them afterwards to find out how they got on and what they thought about Pilates for men. These are their responses to the questions we asked:

These muscles surround the spine, lower back, and pelvis, and it’s important that these muscles are strong as they allow safe movement of the arms and legs, and allow the body to bend and twist without causing injury. Arms, legs and head are very heavy, and when moved away from the body, lots of stress is created along the spine due to leverage.

Q: Do you know what your core muscles are and what they do?

Stefan: Yes, I did. Apart from walking, I lead a fairly sedentary life so it was good to do something different. You were a great teacher and it was good to have the attention to stop me doing things wrong. Also good from my view to be in a small group! Not very good with the breathing though and I do need to be less tense - not sure why I am!

Stefan: I know more now than I did before yesterday but could probably do with a more detailed appreciation! Marcus: The core muscles are the deep internal muscles, around the stomach, lower stomach, back and lower back,

Marcus: Yes I did!

FITNESS Men benefit from Pilates because: 1. It strengthens the muscles that count. The pelvic floor, deep abdominal and back muscles that form the protection for your spine and allow you to move more effectively without overloading your spine. 2. It develops flexibility. In Joseph Pilates’ own words “You are only as young as your spine is flexible”. 3. It allows your muscles to develop in balance with each other and supporting each other. This allows all your movements to be more powerful and controlled which helps with day to day activities as well as sports activities. 4. You are developing your pelvic floor, lower abdominal muscles so all the benefits that come with that control….do I need to explain this one? I’m sure your wives will understand what I’m trying to say! 5. It will help improve your posture. You will stand taller, hold your head higher and naturally look more composed. Once you start Pilates this will be the first thing people who know you will comment on.

We run lots of individual and ‘Men-only’ Pilates classes at Physio 1 to 1. All our Physiotherapists are also Pilates instructors. We offer both mat-work and equipment circuits. Everyone gets a pre-class screening session to allow us to analyse posture, flexibility and strength. Our classes are small so that individual needs and progressions can be addressed. The small classes allow us to make individual corrections to ensure the exercises are being performed optimally. You don’t have to be injured to attend our sessions and you don’t have to be a fitness freak. We teach all ages and abilities and can focus on individual needs whether that is to be free from back pain or to be able to powerlift more effectively. As Joseph Pilates said “I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. Step 1: Get on your hands and knees on the floor. Step 2: Walk your hands forward to form a long plank position. Flex your toes and lengthen your calf muscles stretching them towards your heels. Straighten your arms with your hands placed directly below your shoulders (not under your armpits). Lengthen your neck and keep your body in a straight line from your heels to the crown of your head. Step 3: Exhale and engage your stomach muscles by drawing them towards your spine, making sure your hips are in line with the rest of your body, and not sagging towards the floor or elevated up in the air. Step 4: Inhale, and bend your elbows straight back (so your arms brush past your ribs) to lower your body in one piece, making sure your head and neck stay in line. Your breast bone needs to remain lifted between your shoulder blades so your shoulder blades don’t lift up or squeeze together. This is an essential element to teach you control over your shoulders and upper back. Your stomach should not drop nearer to the floor. The aim isn’t to get your nose to touch the ground but to keep your alignment. Step 5: Exhale and straighten your arms. Repeat the press-up as many times as you can whilst maintaining perfect form. Pilates press-ups are done in a slow controlled manner with focus on form and breath control.

Q: Was it what you expected it to be? Stefan: It was tougher than I expected and that is no bad thing. I was also a bit unsure about whether my posture was right and I was doing things correctly so you do need a small class to start with until you know more about what you are doing and to ensure what you are doing is correct. Marcus: Yes it was generally, however, there were a few differences to my regular weekly class. Firstly there was a noticeable difference by having the full length mirror in front of me. I’m not used to watching myself, scary. The individual one-to-one element was great, very specific, and excellent to make sure that every little movement is done correctly. In a large class, my mind-set (having done Pilates for 3-4 years now) is to get through a class without being told that anything needs correcting, very self-conscious. In an individual class, like we had, I felt that your corrections to any of my positions was an aid to me, not a criticism.

Q: Do you consider Pilates to be a worthwhile exercise for men? Stefan: Yes and especially so for those with certain issues. I can see that it would help me creak less (!) and it must be worthwhile to use and develop inner muscles. I will probably do some of the exercises at home. Marcus: Pilates is excellent for men, and I can see why more men are turning to it. It’s not just for men with injuries, or men who are elderly and have less flexibility or movement, it’s for all men. Pilates will prevent lots of issues further down the line, helping with core strength, posture etc. Before I did Pilates, when I was standing watching my son’s football match, my lower back would seize up after just 10 minutes or so. With only going to Pilates for one hour a week, it makes a massive difference to me, so there’s no going back, I’ll have to continue for the rest of my life!

CowParade update..

CowParade Surrey is the world’s largest public art event and will see cows positioned around Surrey from May-September. The idea is that each cow is ‘sponsored’ by a business, school or charity and decorated by a local artist. The cows, which can be standing, sitting or grazing, will then be herded to the inaugural Surrey Hills Food, Drink and Music Festival on 3rd September where they will be auctioned off for charity. Those judged to be extra special will be auctioned at a gala dinner held at a unique London location later in the year.

The latest addition to the CowParade herd was unveiled at the end of January at Coverwood Farm, the official CowParade HQ. Affectionately named ‘Trusty the Surrey Hills Cow’ by Chairman of the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, Neil Maltby, the Cow was designed to help raise awareness and understanding of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Said Neil Maltby: “I’m delighted with the design of ‘Trusty the Cow’. I felt strongly that this was a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the Surrey Hills landscape and the organisations that are in place to help protect this special area. ‘Trusty’ will not only form part of CowParade Surrey but will also help us longer term to promote and educate people about the Surrey Hills when we take her around the County to shows and events.“ Designed and painted by local artist Ali Clarke, who took her inspiration from the established Surrey Hills trademark and the rolling hills, Ali commented: “‘The design for the Surrey Hills cow was inspired directly by the established brand of the organisation. The trademark represents the undulating Surrey Hills landscape and was inspired by the work of Walter Bailey the sculptor commissioned for the boundary markers and artworks across the AONB. The fluid shapes transfer so well on the undulating form of the cow. It was apt that I should paint this alongside real cows on a farm in the heart of the Surrey Hills.” ‘Trusty’ is the second cow to be officially unveiled, with lots more planned in the coming months.

Cow ‘sponsors’ can choose a charity of their own to benefit from half of the auction proceeds, with the other 50 per cent going to the Surrey Hills Trust Fund, a charity established to conserve and protect the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, leaving a legacy for generations to come. CowParade Surrey has already secured offers of support from key organisations including the National Trust, schools and Surrey businesses such as Sandown Park Racecourse and Vines BMW. The Vines BMW Group, as well as sponsoring a Cow, have also supplied the promotional vehicle to Surrey Hills CowParade. “I don’t want to go to school” - every parent’s nightmare ”I don’t want to go to school today.” These are the words that every parent dreads hearing, especially in the fraught chaos that usually accompanies the morning routine of most families. But before the panic sets in, visions of having to find another school at short notice, potential home schooling, not to mention new uniforms take over, it might just be worth reading this article. A child may not want to go to school for a number of reasons. I can certainly cast my mind back 38 years and recall quite clearly not wanting to go to my Reception class on a handful of occasions. I can’t even remember why, but I do remember clinging to my mother for dear life, crying, kicking and making a noise that must have emanated throughout every corridor in the building. I can also remember being aged 13 and getting out of the car on a Sunday night to be dropped off at boarding school and not being terribly happy about it. But to put these events into perspective, what I know now is that after all those years of attending school as a pupil, I definitely got over those occasional ‘off days’ and actually came to really enjoy the school environment. So much so that I’ve invested the last 25 years working in one as a teacher! Whilst it is not a common occurrence in the school where I teach , there are – and I’m sure always will be – some occasions when children simply don’t want to come to school. For the parent, this can be - depending on the scene a child makes or what they say – at the very least frustrating, often upsetting and sometimes extremely worrying. Typically, these scenes tend to play March 2016

themselves out when time is at a premium and everyone is rushing around determined not to be late for their morning appointments. Quite often the statement comes as a bolt out of the blue and you have absolutely no idea why your child is showing a sudden resistance to school. But rest assured, there are steps that you can take to get to the root cause of the issue – if indeed there is one at all. So, what are the potential reasons behind your child’s clear aversion to school? Unsurprisingly, there could be just one or just a few reasons. These include being separated from the established bond with mum who provides a sense of security and support; the change of routine which can trigger anxiety; feelings of inadequacy if they are struggling to complete a particular task / in a particular subject or friendship issues. It can sometimes even be the stark realisation that school is now part and parcel of everyday life and your child is rebelling against the fact that the freedom to choose what to do most of the day is gone. Or even something as simple as not wanting to use a different lavatory! What is important at this stage, is how you as a parent respond when faced with a child who simply does not want to let go. Firstly, let your child know that you are in charge, not them, so be quietly assertive but stay calm. Hand your child over to the teacher quickly and do not linger (tempting I know) in the background to check that all is well. Children rarely stay unsettled for

more than a few minutes but are quite capable of putting on a show if it means it might get the parents’ attention. Even the youngest children will know how to ‘press your buttons’. Any school worth their salt will call to provide reassurance that your child has settled on the first day or two that he / she might exhibit this type of behaviour. After that, no news is good news and you can assume that your child is fine and getting on with their day. The teacher will most likely confirm this to you at pick up time. Do talk to your child’s teacher so that you can both dig deeper and try and identify the reason behind the reluctance to go to school. You can then work together as a team to develop a strategy to deal with the problem - and then stick to it. At home, focus on talking about the positive aspects of school, create a sense of excitement about what might be happening during the upcoming week (the teacher can tell you this) and yes, possibly use simple rewards such as a play in the park (but not money or sweets) to encourage the appropriate behaviour and acceptance of the need to go to school with minimum fuss. It’s not easy being a parent and sometimes you may find it helpful to share your experiences with other mums and dads, as most have had to deal with this type of issue at some point in their child’s life. Likewise, staff at the school will have a wealth of experience you can tap into, along with useful practical solutions to change your child’s perception of the school environment. Getting to the bottom of what is upsetting your child is key. Once that is sorted, you can look at how to overcome the problem and soon, not wanting to go to school will be a thing of the past. 21

Wey & Arun Canal A major step towards completion of a new canal crossing in Surrey was made when volunteer bricklayers began work on laying the brick cladding on the new bridge, which spans the Wey & Arun Canal at the Alfold entrance to Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. The Trust aims to re-open most of the canal between Tickner’s Heath in Dunsfold and Fast Bridge on the A281 at Alfold at the beginning of October. Small boats will be able to navigate that stretch for the first time in more than150 years. The re-opening will coincide with the Trust’s celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the 23-mile Wey & Arun Canal being declared open at the Compasses site. These microspores bury themselves into the pores of the stone surface and feed off the mineral in the stone. This causes the growth both across and into the stone, in which their root anchors them. Unseen until the beginning of the third year from the day the stone is laid, they grow into vivid black ‘ink-like’ spots, that soon plague the surface. Can’t you just pressure wash them away? That won’t work. In fact, it only serves to damages the surface, as, by this time they have anchored themselves, there to stay and multiply. Pressure washing can also damage stonework, make it more vulnerable to organic infestations and susceptible to frost damage. How often do you need to use the range? Neighbourhood Plan Exhibition From 22 March to 16 April 2016 there will be a Neighbourhood Plan exhibition at Godalming Museum (109a High Street, Godalming, GU7 1AQ). The exhibition will explain the Neighbourhood Planning process in general and the specific work that has been done so far by the team working on the Neighbourhood Plan for Godalming and Farncombe. We will outline the findings of our questionnaire to all households and share some of the possible options for inclusion in the Plan. Most importantly we will be giving you the opportunity to have your say on the future of our town.

It’s such a little known, but potentially powerful, part of local democracy that we think it bears repeating year after year. Anyone on the electoral roll for Godalming (that is, all Godalming voters), can attend, speak and vote at the meeting. It’s the ideal place to put any question you wish to the Town Council. There is no need to submit your question in advance or put it in writing: simply put up your hand at the meeting and you will be able to ask your question. We can’t guarantee your question can be answered in full on the night – but we’ll try and if we can’t then we will respond in writing within a week. They will also be holding their summer fete on 18th June 12pm-4pm on Cannon Bowring Field, Farncombe and if you would like to book a bargain pitch for £25 contact them on the number below. The centre is housed in the old St John’s School, next to St John’s Church in Farncombe. The building is owned by Waverley and opened as a Day Centre in 1988, when it was no longer needed as a school. The Day Centre is a registered charity and is run by a management committee. They have a small number of paid staff and as many volunteers as they can find. Like most local organisations, they are always looking out for new volunteers. The Day Centre is open on Mondays to Fridays from 10am until 4pm and everyone aged 50 and over is welcome. They have a hairdressing salon and also offer NHS and private chiropody and an Age UK Feet First service for basic nail cutting and advice, and they offer an assisted bathing service three times a week. They serve a hot meal at midday and light refreshments are available throughout the day. Their minibus with tail-lift picks up people in the area served by the Centre and can return them home at the end of the day. In the afternoons they have entertainment, including Bingo (Mondays 2pm-3pm) and Whist (Thursdays 1.30-3pm), and also chair-based exercise, musical performances, cooking, arts and crafts, singing and quiz sessions. The Day Centre is very friendly and welcoming

with a very warm and happy atmosphere. They hope that younger ‘seniors’ from the locality will call in and see what they have to offer. Container plants for bees and butterfiles over three seasons. This particular cultivar has large, candy pink flowers, but you’ll find different coloured flowering Gerbera from the same series. Thyme is another super plant to grow in containers. When you’re harvesting thyme, resist temptation to remove your stems in their entirety from the very base of the plant. Instead cut your harvest from the tips of your plant which will encourage bushy growth. There are so many varieties of thyme to choose from, varieties of Lemon thyme provide a delicious flavour in cooking, as does Orange-scented thyme. Whether you’ve got a garden, patio, balcony, or a windowsill, remembering to choose flowering plants that produce pollen and nectar that bees and other pollinating insects can access is a wonderfully worthwhile thing to do. By encouraging nature into your area you can really transform your garden, bringing the whole area to life. There’s nothing more entertaining than watching bees, butterflies and moths in your garden. These fascinating insects will raise your spirits and inspire you. If you’re looking for beautiful plants that will grow well in containers and encourage bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other precious pollinating insects to your garden, the following suggestions will help you: Erigeron karvinskianus is such a pretty flower. It adds a delicate softness to walls, steps and other areas of hard landscaping, giving them a touch of beauty, and a delicacy that might have previously been thought impossible. It’s also a super choice for hanging baskets, containers and window boxes, flowering non-stop from early summer to the first frosts. I love growing hardy Gerbera garvinea in containers. My plants have survived without any special care through the coldest of our winters, growing larger in size each year. They produce such an abundance of flowers that I also use them for cut flowers. With regular feeding and deadheading, my Gerbera garvinea have flowered non-stop from early spring until they have really been hammered by the frosts in winter. Gerbera garvinea ‘Sweet Surprise’ is part of a new series of hardy Gerbera that have been specially bred to provide hardy plants that produce a continuous display of flowers

Other worthy candidates to grow in containers to provide pollen and nectar for pollinating insects include: Lavandula angustifolia, Origanum, Cosmos, Limnanthes douglasii, Calendula oﬃcinalis, Osteospurmum, Aubrieta, Clarkia, Sarcococca, Sedum and Scabious. Single-flowered varieties provide accessible pollen and nectar – avoid double-flowered varieties. Try wherever you can to provide a continuous supply of nectar throughout the year. Look out for the ‘Perfect for Pollinators’ logo on plants at your local garden centre or nursery. None of the plants I have mentioned here require a peat-based compost, so use a peat free alternative growing media. I’ve had excellent results using Dalefoot Composts, a range of peat-free composts made from 100% natural ingredients including bracken and sheep’s wool. Dalefoot’s wool-based potting compost is ideal for containers, the sheep’s wool that’s incorporated into this compost has naturally absorbent properties which provide extra water retention. This means that your containers require less watering which is a bonus. If you have the choice, position your containers in a sunny spot as butterflies like the warmth and will be more inclined to visit your plants. Deadhead your plants regularly to encourage further flowering and keep your containers well watered. Avoid using any insecticides or pesticides in your garden as they are very damaging to insects and wildlife.

‘Hoppy Easter’ Cupcakes 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F/gas mark 4. 2. Cream the butter (or margarine) and sugar together in an electric mixer. 3. Slowly add the eggs, then the flour and vanilla and mix until fully combined. Make sure you scrape the bowl with a spatula between mixing. 4. Place the cupcake cases in a muffin tin and spoon approximately 50ml (1¾fl oz) of mixture into each one. Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes.

Ingredients 175g (6oz) butter (or margarine) 175g (6oz) caster sugar 3 medium eggs 175g (6oz) self-raising flour 1tsp vanilla extract Apricot jam, boiled and cooled Edibles SK Sugarpaste: 72g (2½oz) Bridal White, 220g (7¾oz) Bridal White coloured with Dark Green and a touch of Yellow paste food colours 20g (¾oz) SK Pink Sugar Dough 1 pack SK Sugar Florist Paste (SFP): Pale Yellow with a touch of Orange paste food colour SK Quality Food Colour (QFC) Pastes: Dark Green, Orange and Yellow SK Edible Glue Small amount of SK Instant Mix Royal Icing Equipment 12 x SK Dotty Cupcake Cases in Pink, Spring Green and Yellow 12-hole muffin tin 6cm (2 3/8”) round cutter Small blossom cutter Piping nozzle: no. 1 Makes 12

5. Once the cakes are baked and spring back to the touch, take them out of the tin immediately. Leave to cool before decorating. 6. Brush the top of each cupcake with a little cooled, boiled apricot glaze. Roll out the yellow-green sugarpaste to a 3mm (1/8”) thickness and cut out twelve 6cm (2 3/8”) circles of paste. Place these onto the cupcakes and smooth them down with the palm of your hand. 7. Shape 4g (just under ¼oz) of Bridal White sugarpaste into a long teardrop shape for the bunny’s ear. Flatten it slightly with the palm of your hand and taper the top of the ear into a point. Roll out a small amount of Pink Sugar Dough and cut out an inner ear shape. Attach it in the centre of the ear with edible glue. 8. Make another ear in the same way but fold it over in the middle. Trim the bottom of each ear straight and use edible glue to attach them to the cupcake. Repeat to make 11 pairs of ears for the remaining cupcakes. 9. Roll out the yellow SFP thinly and cut out 36 little blossoms. Pipe a small dot of royal icing into the centre of each flower using a no. 1 nozzle. Stick one to the straight ear with edible glue. Secure the remaining blossoms over the top of the cupcakes.

4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to 5mm (¼”) thick. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper, place the biscuit dough onto the tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

6. Place the cookies on two baking trays lined with parchment so they are not touching then bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes. The biscuits should be slightly brown around the edges when baked. Leave to cool.

Place the butter, sugar and vanilla extract into an electric mixer and cream them together until wellcombined and creamy. Avoid over-mixing as this will cause the biscuits to spread as they are baking. 2. Add the egg until well combined, then turn the mixer down to the lowest setting and add a little of the flour. Gradually add all the flour and mix until a dough is formed. 3. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/375°F/gas mark 5.

5. Cut out 24 egg shapes using the egg- or ovalshaped cookie cutter.

7. Brush the biscuits with cooled, boiled apricot glaze. Roll out the green-coloured sugarpaste to 3mm (1/8”) thick and cut out eight egg shapes from the paste. Lay a piece of sugarpaste onto each cookie and smooth down with your hands. Repeat this method with Pink and Yellow Sugar Dough to make eight pink and eight yellow egg cookies. 8. Roll out a small amount of the remaining green sugarpaste thinly and cut out a circle using each of the different-sized round cutters. Attach the green circles randomly over the pink eggs using edible glue. 9. Make up the royal icing according to the packet instructions and divide it into two bowls. Colour one half with Rose dust food colour and the other half with Yellow and a spot of Orange dust food colours. 10. Fit a small piping bag with a no. 1.5 nozzle and fill 2/3 with pink royal icing. Starting from the left and piping one line at a time, pipe a crisscross pattern over the yellow cookies. Pipe loops across the middle of each of the green cookies in pink royal icing. 11. Fit another small piping bag with a no. 1.5 nozzle and fill 2/3 with yellow royal icing. Pipe zigzag lines above and below the pink line on the green cookies.

Grantley’s great rebirth Well my fellow gastronauts, we have a treat for you this month. The Grantley Arms in Wonersh has long been a fine building in need of a passionate owner to make it the sort of pub it should be. Luckily it now has two of them, as well as a great chef who is bringing some seriously fine dining to a part of Surrey in real need of somewhere special.

milk and butter and then whisked by hand. Yes, we asked! And then a bowl of creamed shredded sprouts with bacon. So sweet, so delicious. Even self-styled sprout haters would love this, surely? The wine choice was a fine, plummy Brunello di Montalcino, Pian Delle Vigne 2010.

I remember the Grantley of old. Where before it was a bit dark and gloomy, it is now light and airy. It is a massive space, with wooden tables and chairs, comfy leather sofas, tartan bar stools and attractive furnishings. Very gastro pub. What was the old skittle alley is now the formal restaurant, with more wooden tables, leather banquettes and rather sumptuous dining chairs. Rather splendid rustic chandeliers hang from the high ceiling. So far so good. The restaurant menu offers two courses for £28 and three for £35, with a choice of six starters and mains and four desserts. I have to say that everything sounded both tempting and intriguing. Alongside a lovely glass of local Albury sparkling wine, we were presented with a square of breaded rose veal belly with black onion crumb and hazelnuts. A perfect amuse bouche, with lovely soft and well flavoured meat. The home-made sourdough bread looked ordinary but wasn’t. Served with home-made butter, it was a winner. From something as simple as bread you can tell a lot about a restaurant, as it proved. My colleague Marcus picked a starter of Braised Bavette of Galloway Beef, two parcels of melting beef wrapped in bacon with little accompaniments including mini onion rings which really brought the dish to life. My Savoy wrapped Penrith Chicken Ballotine was beautifully moist and came with slivers of apple, sweetcorn shoots and crisp wild rice which added sweetness and texture. Both were artistically presented on fabulous flat bottomed earthenware plates. Michel Roux would approve. We each had a glass of Pouilly Fuissé

Domaine Denuziller 2012, which was rich, fresh with apricot notes and great charm. For the main event, Marcus opted for Hay Smoked Saddleback Pork Fillet with black garlic, braised cheek and artichoke. It came in a glass cloche to retain the smoke, which was a first for us in the depths of the Surrey Hills. The pork, served slightly pink, was full of flavour with a delicate smokiness. The cheek was a thing of beauty, a perfect counterfoil to the fillet. My Herdwick Lamb Cannon with braised belly, truﬄed potato and ‘threecornered’ garlic was a stunningly good plate. The lamb, medium rare, was everything great lamb should be and the breaded and fried belly added a decadent richness. Both came with little pots of deeply flavoured jus which brought the dishes alive. While the portions were not small, side dishes were needed. At £3 each, we had good, crisp triple cooked chips and steamed tenderstem broccoli. The stars of the sideshow however were both superb. The first was simple mashed potato, but the best mash we had ever tasted, made with ‘Lovers’ potatoes, seasoned, with

Neither of us is mad on dessert so we asked for a recommendation. We ended up with two suggestions and to satisfy the needs of our sweet toothed readers, agreed to try them both. Gosh, these were not only works of art but delicious. Blood Orange Curd came with orange jelly, sorbet and shards of meringue. A lovely combination, very refreshing with well-balanced sweetness. The star, at least in my eyes, was Opalyse Cremeux. This consisted of small peaks of whipped white chocolate on pistachio crumbs with blackberries, white chocolate shards and yet another star, a blackberry and anise sorbet. The chocolate was not too sweet, the blackberries offered freshness and the sorbet was simply exquisite. Stunning. The chef, Matthew Edmonds, hails from Searcys at The Gherkin in London, where he was head chef. He certainly knows how to source brilliant ingredients, marry great flavours and cook some delicious food. He was not actually there when we dined, which is a great compliment to his team who did a great job. By fortuitous chance, we met the owners Chris and Richard as we were leaving and were happy to compliment them on a great start over a drink. Some of the staff possibly need a bit more experience to make this a perfect fine dining experience, but it was honestly one of the best meals we have experienced outside of London. WALK - Artington and Loseley This is a very pleasant and fairly short walk which goes through some lovely, peaceful countryside at the foot of the Hog’s Back. It then doubles back through the grounds of Loseley Park before meeting the river Wey for a brief final stroll along the towpath. I walked it in early February and happily it was not at all muddy. It is also dog friendly as is the pub at the end of the walk, which is reputedly Guildford’s oldest.

The walk 1. From the off-street parking on Sandy Lane, walk back down towards the A3100 until you see a signed footpath, the North Downs Way, on your left just past Manor Cottage. Passing Piccards Manor, you soon enter countryside with a green field on your right with houses beyond. Continue into light woodland and the houses soon give way to the ridge of the Hog’s Back on your right. 2. You soon reach the farm buildings for Piccard’s Farm and continue ahead on the lane past the farmhouse. Follow the lane round a left-hand bend and shortly after, turn right through a pair of open gates, still on the North Downs Way. This track is the driveway to Conduit Farm, so please keep an eye on any off-lead dogs. Keep straight on following the line of the Hog’s Back until you reach a sharp right bend to the farmhouse. Leave the track and fork left and then right onto a narrow sandy path, maintaining the original direction.

3. This sunken footpath goes past the Loseley Estate Nature Reserve on your left and soon you will reach a 4-way signpost. Turn left here and do downhill on another sunken footpath. Pass (and ignore) a footpath on your right up stairs and you will come to the end of a lane by Little Polsted. Turn left here and go past a closed metal gate, keeping ahead past Polsted Lodge on your left. When you come to a closed wooden gate into the Loseley Estate, follow the footpath left and then right. You will have a fine view of Loseley House on your right. Loseley House was built between 1562 and 1568. The new house replaced a smaller one which Elizabeth I declared was not ‘adequate’ for her to visit and requested something larger be built. As was common, much of the stone was reclaimed from earlier buildings, in Loseley’s case from the Cistercian Abbey of Waverley ten miles away at Farnham where ruins can still be seen. The great hall is the principal room containing panelling from Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace, a minstrel’s gallery, carvings by Grinling Gibbons, panels from Henry VIII’s banqueting tents and a collection of royal and family portraits. 4. Keep ahead over a stile and you will see a picturesque lake ahead. You can take a small detour here through a swing gate and take advantage of the picnic tables conveniently sited around it. Keep ahead skirting past the lake through an open gateway and through the middle of a large field. There is a lovely view ahead of the small hamlet of Littleton with the majestic North Downs in the distance. Go through another open gateway and head towards a charming

Keep on the footpath, which passes the Surrey Police headquarters at Mount Browne on your left, until it ends. Keep ahead until you meet the A3100. Turn left along the pavement for 50 yards and then cross to follow a signed track which goes under a railway bridge to reach St Catherine’s Lock on the River Wey. Turn left on the towpath and follow the river past the foothill of St Catherine’s Chapel. 6. Go under a footbridge over the river and shortly afterwards, turn left alongside a spring and meet Ferry lane which meets the A3100 at the top. Turn right here and shortly you will reach Ye Olde Ship Inn. Cross the road and rejoin Sandy Lane and the end of the walk.

PROFILE Godalming Lawn Tennis Club work full time. Everyone is encouraged to lend a hand where they can, including with fundraising, events, and ground maintenance. The club’s volunteers are truly what gives it its character.

Godalming Lawn Tennis Club (GLTC) is going from strength to strength. Last year saw the formal opening of its brand new multi-purpose clubhouse by Jeremy Hunt MP. The new building has a striking contemporary style, complementing the adjacent leisure centre. It features a large activity room, kitchen/breakout space, showers and changing rooms. A large sun terrace overlooks the courts, giving spectators a great view of proceedings, and high speed fibre broadband ensures everyone has a great connection. The club has also installed electronic access control, motion sensor security lights and CCTV, for a safe and secure environment. Since the opening the club has followed up with a series of Tennis Xpress courses for beginners, which proved extremely popular and really lit up the off season. It has continued to grow its junior and adult membership base, which now totals over 190. Another highlight of 2015 was the Dan Eley Foundation Charity Tournament, run in conjunction with Busbridge Tennis Association. But GLTC isn’t just focussed on tennis. A unique new Health Promotion Tennis Project is offering people with mental and physical health conditions help with their rehabilitation through a programme of weekly group sessions. These include medical assessments, coaching and tennis themed exercise. It’s guaranteed fun in a very friendly atmosphere. James Ambler, the full time coach, is on hand for advice and support, whether through individual or group lessons, or by matching up players. The dedicated committee is made up of eleven highly committed men and women, many of whom also
