YOUR LOCAL TEAM This month sees the launch of the VantagePoint Travel Club, where we will be offering our readers exclusive breaks, holidays and trips in association with leading travel specialists. This month’s offer is a trip to Venice on the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express, put together for us by Travel Dream, a local independent travel agent working with the best names in the bespoke quality travel tours market. This is one of my dream trips but sadly I have not (yet) been asked to do a review. Readers who do take advantage of this very special offer are encouraged to send us their feedback for a future edition. The next months will see different offers but if you fancy something different, please do not hesitate in contacting Travel Dream as they

I thought I would share this with you. We have recently had a bad attack from slugs, which seem extremely partial to Lupins. We read that slugs really like beer so we have sunk a few plastic cups in the ground and filled them with beer. Well, what a success; the bar is open every night and the slugs are wallowing in it, literally! It does seem to work and the Lupins are surviving. Don’t worry; this is not the start of garden tips from the Jotters! If you are off on your family holidays later this month, have a wonderful time. Exhibitions at Godalming Museum Godalming Museum has two exhibitions in July. Firstly, ‘A Place in Town’ started on 28th June and runs until Saturday 9th July. Phil Kemp and Giles Pattison explore Godalming’s people and places through the camera lens in a fresh and imaginative light with unique photographs to intrigue, tease and entertain. Then, from 12th to 30th July, Godalming Photographic Club’s Annual Exhibition takes place displaying a very high standard of work by the 70+ members. For more details see www.godalmingphoto.org. Godalming Museum is located at 109a High Street, by the Pepperpot. It is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Admission is free but donations are welcomed. The Local Studies library is open in the afternoons from 1pm to 4pm. Light refreshments are available throughout the day and children are always welcome. There is a delightful Jekyll style garden at the rear of the museum and an excellent gift shop. Godalming Museum is run in partnership by Waverley Borough Council and Godalming Museum Trust. mayhem. This is your chance to step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family. As you enter the realm of the Middle Ages, prepare yourself, for you will be greeted by a sight not seen on these lands for hundreds of years, a living medieval encampment. Here in the Living History Village, the inhabitants go about their daily life with the smiths sharpening swords and axes as their good wives cook stew over steaming pots. In the battlefield beyond, harken to the call of booming cannon fire, the clash of steel on steel and experience the authenticity of the mighty battle taking place in front of your eyes.

We preview a festival of mediaeval mayhem, which takes place in Loxwood the first two weekends in August...

As with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment were a grim affair. Murderers were given the same trials as apple thieves and both usually met the same grizzly end. Mediaeval life was a terrifying one. But nothing brings that reality to light more than the gruesome and frightening apparition that is the Executioner. Dressed in all black, wielding an axe or scythe, this fearsome arbiter of the law was once all that stood between the good folk of the realm and the gallows.

From the first moment you walk through the gates and see the sign saying ‘You are now entering the 15th Century. Laws of the year 1455 now apply. You have been warned’, you will be transported back in time in a unique, tree-surrounded seven meadow location, shielding you from the modern world outside. You can then go forward to explore the many areas full of all the wonders of the Middle Ages.

Over the bridge dwells the den of the witches and their black cauldron, so prepare to be bewildered or enlightened by their strange and arcane delights. These creatures most foul will lure and beguile you with their spells and incantations, but be brave and you may be rewarded instead with a charm or two.

This Mediaeval Festival was started by Legend Presents in 2002 at Berkeley, Gloucestershire and ran there successfully until 2007 when the site flooded. After four years of looking for the perfect site, the magical Loxwood Meadow was found and The Loxwood Joust has now been running here since 2012. Starting as a one weekend event, always the first weekend in August, it expanded in 2015 to accommodate the growing interest and is now a permanent fixture on the first two weekends of August.

Harken to the call of booming cannon fire, the clash of steel on steel and experience the authenticity of the mighty battle taking place in front of your eyes.

The Loxwood Joust is the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the land and explores the full richness of our country’s grand heritage with an unrivalled programme of mediaeval

Nestled in the heart of the woodland area you will find the Mead Shack. Mediaeval Baebes will entice, entrance and soothe their audience with magical voices that will be heard all across the Loxwood fields, and it is here that you will also see the hypnotic belly dancers and will laugh along with the talented performing mummers. Beyond the woodlands lies the mighty jousting arena. In the heart of the Midsummers Meadow the knights come to earn honour and valour before the watching eyes of the crowd. With the pounding of horses’ hooves as they thunder their way across the field, the magnificent fully armoured jousting knights present a fastpaced, all action jousting tournament that will always amaze and astound. So as you venture forth, you must take your time to look around at the variety of treats in store. When not in flight, the hawks, owls, falcons and other birds of prey, rest on their perches giving you the chance to see the hunters of the skies up close. And you cannot miss the Mediaeval Market Place where traders and hawkers vie for your attention. Traders skilled in authentic medieval techniques and products bring their wares to sell, just like peddlers of old. Try to see if you cannot hawk a bargain at Traders Row where the merchants have gathered together, bringing with them trinkets and treasures and all manner of goodies for your pleasure. As companies of actors, wandering minstrels, the Court Jester and dance troupes entertain and delight throughout the day, ‘Sir Lancelot the Bald’ will be found resplendent in tights. This bright character will have you in stitches with his improbable stunts and cheeky comedy. See him roll crystal balls across his head, juggle copious amounts of fire and most amazingly of all, with support from the audience, walk a rope whilst playing with some deadly sharp knives.

July 2016

Now the question to ask is have you ever wondered what mediaeval underwear looked like? If indeed they even wore underwear back in those days. And just exactly how long did it take to get dressed in all that garb? How does one tie a corset? Why did men wear tights? And exactly what is a Coif? All this and more is answered in person by the Mediaeval Housewife, as she presents to you the dirty laundry of the Middle Ages. Whilst exploring the abundance of all things is mediaeval, you will locate the Loxwood Tavern and a surrounding collection of foods and drinks stalls. Gorge yourselves on the many varied and wonderful foods on offer and make sure you rest a while on the hay bales scattered about whilst you take in the living history around you. And then in the far corner of the Midsummers Meadow nestles the Children’s Kingdom. A festival within a festival, where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency, there is all manner of exciting activities from Have a Go Archery, Pelt the Peasant, Face and Wound Painting and of course the, Bouncy Castle. Encamped within the Children’s Kingdom you will also find sword school, giving both adults and children the chance experience the life of a knight in training and more importantly learn some longsword moves. Here you will have the opportunity to test your bow skills against an exciting range of targets. Would you have been able to feed your family back in medieval times? Can you hit the 3D life-size boar and stag? So there you have it, The Loxwood Joust is a festival like no other, one of history and discovery and everything else in between. You are welcomed to your heritage and all are invited to an exciting mediaeval day out, as history comes to life each day from 10am to 6pm. Look at our online competitions for a chance to win family tickets - www.vantagepointmag.co.uk. FIND OUT MORE The Loxwood Joust’s unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry, guarantees a day out like no other, takes place on the 6th, 7th, 13th and 14th August. It is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood with ample free parking. Advanced tickets available now at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk.

Chiddingfold Cinema Thursdays 7th and 21st July 8pm Two films this month. First up is Eddie the Eagle, a comedy based on the life of Britain’s most notorious sporting underdog. Eddie Edwards’s dreams of an Olympic career, but extreme far-sightedness and dodgy knees frustrate his athletic ambitions until he discovers ski-jumping – a sport no Briton has ever entered. Immortality beckons; all he has to do is leap off a 200-metre high cliff, repeatedly! Then next is Hail Caesar which is a comedy set in a 1950’s Hollywood film studio. Eddie Mannix makes problems disappear, and today there are plenty: the wholesome star of several water-based musicals is unmarried and pregnant, to its director’s horror a sophisticated drawing-room comedy has just been recast with a singing cowboy, and the lead in a glossy and expensive biblical epic has been kidnapped by communists! Tickets for each standard screening cost £5 (£3 for children under 15) on the door, or in advance via www.chiddingfoldcinema. com or from Chiddingfold Post Office. Season Tickets are also available from both locations. For further details, especially anyone interested in volunteering to join them, contact Matthew Lacey on 01428 683120, or email boxoffice@ chiddingfoldcinema.com. Walking for Health Walking is a wonderful form of natural exercise; simple and effective. We could prevent 37,000 deaths every year, just by taking a walk. There aim is to help more people – including those affected by cancer –to discover the joys and health benefits of walking. Your local walks in Cranleigh are every Wednesday and Saturday at 11am. Meet at Cranleigh Leisure Centre. Both walks tend to be 40-90 mins and 2-4 miles long. In addition a 30 min walk on Thursdays meeting at 10.30am at Cranleigh Leisure Centre is recommended for new walkers. In Godalming, they are on Thursdays at 11am. Meet beside the Walks for Health meeting post on the Riverside Walk in the Phillips Memorial Park (found by taking the entrance path into the Park, opposite the Council Offices car park, then turning left along Riverside Walk for about 15 metres. This is a 40-60 min walk of approx. 2 miles. In addition there is a 30 min walk on the second Thursday of every month and a 90 min, longer walk which replaces the regular walk on the first Thursday of every month and includes a pub lunch (bring money). Please contact carolsearle@pfpleisure for more information. Bramley Music Saturday 9th July 7pm Go along and hear ‘Sticking Together’ taking place in Holy Trinity Church, Bramley with Tom Hollister wielding the sticks on percussion together with Richard Saxel on piano. Tom, who is in his final year at the Royal College of Music, brings his characteristic humour and charm to an entertaining recital featuring a wide range of instruments and musical styles, together with pianistic contributions from Richard who is Head of Performance at Cranleigh School. P-p-p-pick up a puppy! Emma Marchington MRCVS, of Brelades Vets in Dorking, offers advice to anyone thinking of getting a dog There is a lot to consider when getting a new dog. Whether you have had dogs for years, not had a dog since your childhood or a first time dog owner, it is a very exciting time but not a decision to be rushed. The first things to consider are why you want a dog and how it is going to fit into your life. Dogs can make excellent companions, be fun and loyal members of the family and get you out into the fresh air, even on the wettest and windiest of days. Everyone knows that dogs are a responsibility and your life will have to change to accommodate their needs, but there is much more to consider than that. First is the cost. You need to look far beyond the cost of simply buying your new puppy. Most people will know to budget for monthly food and annual vet’s bills, but there are many more costs to think about. Dog insurance is certainly advisable, and you should shop around to find a good policy at a good price. Make sure you know exactly what cover you are getting for your monthly payments and bear in mind that the cost per year is likely to increase as the dog ages. For example, you will pay a premium to have a ‘for life’ cover but it means that if a condition is diagnosed at any age this will be continued to be covered under your policy for the whole of your dog’s life, otherwise it is often excluded after the first year.

holiday. If you are out at work during the day, be realistic about the costs of a dog walker or dog day care. Just like child care these can quickly mount up. If you have never had the responsibility of owning your own dog before, I would recommend borrowing a friend’s dog for the weekend. This will give you a taste for the dayto-day ups and downs of owning a dog. You will have to forfeit that long Sunday morning lie-in to get up and let the dog out for the loo, but on the plus side you do get to enjoy a nice morning walk before lunch. Puppies don’t come ready trained and, although toilet training is usually top of people’s minds, the first few months are critical for lots of other things too. Getting your puppy well socialised is key to having a confident, well-rounded dog which is good with other dogs and people, especially children - and this takes time.

You may need to make adaptions to your car like a dog crate or dog bars, and you should certainly make sure your garden is dog proof. That means closing any holes in the fence, and making sure any gates are secure.

It is certainly worth buying a dog training book, and making time to go to puppy socialisation classes, but this alone won’t be enough. You have to be out there with your dog, guiding it through all these new experiences. If you start to see unwanted behaviour don’t wait and allow it to become learnt, go and seek advice. There are dog behaviourists that can do oneon-one visits to work through problems like snapping at other dogs, separation anxiety when left alone, or if you are struggling to master recall.

There is much more to consider, but for now let’s look at that initial choice – which dog is best for you and your lifestyle. Firstly you need to decide whether you want a puppy or an adult dog – or even something in-between. Gun dogs, for instance, are often sold parttrained at adolescence. Your next decision is whether to have a male or female dog. This is largely a matter of personal preference and there is no right or wrong decision. There are lots of clichés and although there seems to be an element of truth in these stereotypes, in my experience it often just comes down to the individual personality of the dog. Females are typically thought to be easier to train as a result of being less distractable while male dogs are meant to be more loving and be focused on people’s attention. Saying that, my labrador bitch is very loving but very easily distracted whilst training, so there are no hard and fast rules. You need to think about your home and environment as a whole when choosing a suitable dog. For instance, do you have a garden or easy access to nearby outdoor space for toileting? Do you have good safe walks nearby? If you are trying to fit in a decent morning walk with your dog in the week around a school run or work, then having easy access to a local walk will be very important. It is likely that the whole family will be sharing the day-to-day chores, and having a dog will certainly impact everyone’s life. Everyone should be on board and actually want a dog. It can be a good idea to sit down and figure out a typical week, to make sure everyone is committed and able to do their share. It is important to have a contingency plan if an emergency comes up, as the dog will still need feeding, walking and looking after regardless. It is good to sound out neighbours, friends or other family members for these emergencies. Deciding on a breed is much like choosing the sex of your dog and is a very individual decision. Some people will say that certain breeds are best suited to certain lifestyles or situations – if only it was that simple, although there is some truth in it. If you live in a flat then a Great Dane will be less suitable than a Shih Tzu. There is a lot of guidance online. For instance, the Kennel Club have a very informative breed July 2016

Which breed is for you? People often try to match breeds with their lifestyle and family situation, but things are never that simple. Your choice will be influenced by personal tastes and perhaps your experience with dogs you grew up with. It is important to do some research, however, to make sure that the dog you’re considering is suitable for your situation. Here is a quick guide to the characteristics and needs of some of the most popular breeds. Labradors are widely regarded as a good all-round dog equally suited to family life or working as a gun dog trained to retrieve. They do need a substantial amount of exercise but generally will settle well in-between long walks. Labradors can be prone to inherited eye, elbow and hip problems so if you are getting a puppy do make sure that both the parents were throughly checked. Cocker spaniels are another popular family dog known to be highly sociable and intelligent. They are smaller than labradors but certainly just as lively and will spend much of their time hunting through the undergrowth when out on walks. Like a labrador, they will require a substantial amount of exercise and have a long life-span. Dachshunds were originally bred for working: going underground or tracking game. Despite their size they still need significant walking and have a long lifespan, averaging over 12 years. They can be quiet independent and single-minded as well as being very loyal and playful. Sadly they are prone to back problems which can require specialist surgery. Greyhounds are often exceptionally good with people and despite being quite large dogs are known to be gentle. However their instinct to chase and kill is very much in their genes, and they find it hard to resist chasing smaller animals such as rabbits, cats and even smaller dogs. It is possible to cat-train greyhounds but this requires patience and plenty of time. Many greyhounds are available to rescue after being raced, and there are specialist rescue charities that you can contact directly.

Which breed is for you? Collies were originally used for herding, often working closely with farm animals. They are typically extremely loyal, very intelligent, and enjoy working closely with their owner whilst being physically and mentally stimulated. There are some excellent agility classes and clubs which will be great fun for both of you. German Shepherds were originally used for herding and flock guarding and nowadays are often used by the military and police. They are loyal, trainable and highly intelligent. They can also be prone to hip problems so make sure you do your research. They are big dogs with males averaging between 30-40kg and require a lot of exercise. Border Terriers were also originally working dogs, used to kill vermin and go to ground. Terriers typically are tenacious and charismatic and can be feisty. That said borders tend to be one of the more relaxed terriers. They stay at a medium to small size, and are bright, energetic dogs with naturally good temperaments. Yorkshire Terriers remain very small dogs and have a long life expectancy, often well over twelve years. They do not require exceptionally long walks and stay light enough to carry comfortably. They often love attention but don’t let their size fool you as they are often quite bold and independent as well as being inquisitive. They can be tricky to toilet train – but so can any dog.

Getting Humphrey Humphrey was my first dog and it took me a long time to decide that I could accommodate a dog in my life. Being single, busy editing this magazine and also a councillor, I knew I would need good back-up from friends and family, which happily was forthcoming. I also needed a relaxed dog who could come with me to work and one I could leave at home at times when I was busy. Being a walker, I was happy with a dog that needed exercise and so Humphrey the black labrador joined me in September 2014 and we’ve never looked back! SR

information centre covering over 200 breeds on their website, giving guidance on size, average exercise requirements, grooming and average life span. If you have a breed in mind, it is definitely worth considering that some breeds have inherited illnesses that they can be more prone to. The more you know going into the decision-making process the easier it will be to identify possible problems, and the more likely you are to end up with a dog that suits you and your lifestyle. Remember that there are many dogs in rescue centres up and down the country that are desperate for homes. Do bear in mind that with a rescue dog you do not always know their full history or what past experiences they may have gone through. Most rescue centres are very good at highlighting dogs which have issues, for example with other dogs or children. Some issues may take time to show; for example the dog may be good with people out of the house but not good when new people come into their home. If you have young children then getting a dog brings added responsibilities. No matter how good a dog seems with kids, you are responsible for teaching your children to respect boundaries around the dog, and not leaving them alone with the dog or in vulnerable positions (for example next to the dog when you feed it). It takes a special sort of owner with the time to dedicate to dogs which have known issues but it can be extremely rewarding to rebuild the trust and confidence of a vulnerable dog. Realistically, though, not all issues can be fully resolved and coping mechanisms may need to be in place for the rest of the dog’s life – and this goes back to making an informed decision right from the start. The important thing is not to rush into a decision. Enjoy researching which dog is right for you and open up a whole new exciting chapter to share with your new best friend. Living with an

Electric Car Our motoring correspondent, Andy Goundry, takes a look at the pros and cons Our recent feature on future motoring attracted several queries asking whether electric cars were really as limited in use as the article suggested. In part, these queries were driven by the continuing promotion of zero-emissions electric cars, not least from our Government, often promising climatic doom unless we all immediately forsake our beloved petrol (and diesel) cars and buy clean, green, electric wheels. Indeed, the Government’s stated objective is for every car on the road to be zero-emissions by 2050. So in this feature we look at the real-world, hands-on use of electric cars in more detail, to consider whether we should indeed all jump aboard the Government’s hoped-for electric revolution. Few things polarise motoring discussions more than the subject of electric cars. Proponents argue that they save the planet, whilst detractors raise a number of real, and imagined, drawbacks; not least the thorny question of where the electricity to power them is going to come from at a time when the UK’s generating capacity is reducing steadily, due to the EU demand for closure of the most polluting power stations. Let’s deal with this one first. Both the UK Department of Transport and the Royal Academy of Engineering have estimated that if the UK switched to electric vehicles, electricity demand would rise about 16%. Whilst this would represent a significant increase in electricity demand, the take-up of electric cars will inevitably be gradual, and so the long-term power supply situation should be manageable – provided of course that the Government presses ahead quickly with developing additional generating capacity. In fact, the UK’s electricity supply problem is perhaps not so much one of having enough maximum capacity as managing the peaks and troughs of electricity demand such as occur when we all switch on our kettles after watching a favourite TV programme. Intriguingly,

20

having a sizeable number of suitably-designed electric cars in the UK could offer the prospect of these being used to manage those peaks in demand by using the electrical energy stored in their battery packs, when parked and plugged-in, to feed into the electricity grid in times of shortage, recharging when the electricity demand - and price - was lower. Nay-sayers also delight in reminding us that whilst electric cars may be emissions-free on the road, generating the electricity to power them just moves the emissions to the power stations. However, this ironically becomes much less of an issue as the more polluting coal-fired power stations are closed down. And this objection also conveniently overlooks the fact that production of petrol and diesel in itself demands the use of vast amounts of electricity. In fact, some analysts believe that the electricity saved by not refining petrol and diesel would be enough to power every vehicle by electricity. So, surely, it would be far better to ‘cut out the middleman’ and use this electricity to power cars directly.

Most electric cars now offer some form of rapid charging, meaning that you can take on a useful amount of charge in as little as 30 minutes.

Another frequent concern is that electric car battery packs may be both short-lived and expensive. Experience, however, has

MOTORING conventional petrol or diesel motor. Some public recharging points such as the Ecotricity network currently provide free electricity, and even if you need to recharge from your domestic supply this will still only cost around one-quarter of the cost of petrol or diesel fuel. Servicing costs should be less, too, as electric cars are generally simpler and more reliable. So, on running costs, we have a big plus for electric cars, even without taking into account any savings from their exemption from the London Congestion Charge, not to mention highly attractive tax rates for company car users. Images, clockwise from immediate left: the Tesla Model S, ‘gold standard of electric cars’; the spacious BMW i3; the swift Golf GTE; and a pair of Model S’s recharge using their Supercharger charging stations.

demonstrated that typically batteries last at least eight years, indeed many electric car manufacturers warrant their batteries for at least that long. Moreover, batteries rarely fail without warning: their performance simply reduces gradually over a long period of time, so an eight-year-old battery may still have 80% or so of the capacity of a new one. Pricewise, new batteries do not seem to be eyewateringly expensive either, certainly when viewed against the several-thousand-pound repair bills which are entirely possible with a conventional car of similar age. Indeed, the running costs of an electric car overall should be far less than for a

Some folk worry that they will be stranded by not being able to find a public charging point when they need one, however there are probably more than you think. As of March 11th this year there were over 10,000 charging connections available in the UK, spread over almost 4,000 locations. In a sign of how quickly the network of charging stations is developing, over 3,000 of these charging connections have been installed in the last 12 months alone. There are also often allegations that these are frequently broken and unusable, however in our testing of a range of electric vehicles, we never encountered an out-ofservice charger. Neither did we ever find every charger at any site all in use at the same time, either. More frequently, there are a row of chargers sitting empty and hopeful of customers! One frustration, though, with finding a public charging station is that there are a number of different charging networks and charging connector types, many of which are incompatible with each other. So a good tip for anyone contemplating an electric car is to firstly identify what type of charging connector is required, as well as what maximum charge rate the car

will accept, and then review the range of locations for this type of charger by using one of the on-line charger maps such as www. zapmap.co.uk. On the positive front, an increasing number of charging stations are now offering multiple connection types, and some networks are also allowing customers who are signed-up to other networks to use their charging stations. Most electric cars now offer some form of rapid charging, meaning that you can take on a useful amount of charge in as little as 30 minutes. For example, the Kia Soul EV can charge to almost 80% of capacity in that time. Be wary of cars which can only charge at a low rate, as fully charging the batteries can then take up to 12 hours, which demands considerable skill in forward planning! The most common electric car worry, however, is the dreaded ‘range anxiety’ - the fear of running out of juice – and this can indeed be a significant issue. Most electric car models claim ranges in excess of 100 miles: the Kia Soul EV for example claims 132 miles, whilst the Nissan Leaf with a 24kW battery claims 124 miles. Beware, though, for these are idealised figures which are highly unlikely to be achieved in the real world. Factor in some motorway driving, using lights, wipers and heater or air-con and the range will drop dramatically. For example, the Nissan Leaf we tested averaged around a 100 mile range in gentle summertime running. Motorway running however dropped this to less than 70 miles. Our Kia Soul came closer to the manufacturers figure at 120 miles between charges, although this too dropped to around 80 miles in admittedly terrible winter conditions with lights, wipers and heater all sapping that all-important range. Given better weather conditions, the range of the Kia would doubtless have increased to even closer to the manufacturers figure, making the Soul EV an interesting and more effective alternative to the market-leading Leaf. Regardless, though, whilst extended motorway journeys are not impossible with an electric car, they are hard work: plan on needing to visit every second motorway service area for a charge top-up during your journey.

If your pockets are deep enough, consider a Tesla. Their novel engineering results in a practical range of some 250 miles for their Model S, whilst their recently-announced midrange (and mid-priced) Model 3 promises over 200 miles. However, the Model 3 is for the future, deliveries into the UK are unlikely until late 2017 at the very earliest. More practical for most of us is a ‘Range Extender. Put simply, this is a full electric car fitted with an auxiliary engine which is used purely to recharge the battery when necessary. The increase in range will obviously depend on the size of fuel tank fitted. As an example, the stylish BMW i3 as a full electric model has a claimed range of up to 105 miles, whereas the range extender version can achieve up to 185 miles from its 9 litre fuel tank. Another alternative may be one of the rapidly increasing number of plug-in hybrids. T y p i c a l l y , these have a petrol engine which can power the car in the normal way, supported by an electric drive-train to provide periods of electric-only motoring. Crucially, many plugin hybrids have low enough emissions to be classed alongside full electric cars as Ultra Low Emission Vehicles by the Government, thus sharing many of the cost benefits such as freedom from Congestion Charging. Whilst the range of a plug-in hybrid in electric mode may be even more limited than that of most fully-electric cars, that limited range is still useful for local journeys, when a conventional petrol or diesel car is at its most inefficient. In terms of sales, the leading plug-in hybrid model is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, a particularly useful vehicle if you need 4x4 capability. Mitsubishi claim the electric-only r a n g e for the Outlander is up to 32

Do range limitations of this sort work for you? If they do, then great: welcome to the world of low-cost electric motoring. If, however, this is just too much of a restriction, then fear not – there are a number of alternatives.

vantagepointmag.co.uk

MOTORING miles, however we achieved only around 20 miles on electric power, a range which experience suggests is typical of any plug-in hybrid. In a sign that the motor industry views plug-in hybrids as the way to go, just about every manufacturer now offers at least one plug-in hybrid model in their range. BMW for example offer plug-in models in their 2-Series, 3-Series and X5 ranges, with more to come. Increasingly, the more sporting plug-in hybrid models are being optimised to combine enhanced performance with good fuel economy, by using their petrol and electric power units either separately, for economy and low emissions, or together for extra performance when necessary. One of our favourites is the Golf GTE, which is virtually indistinguishable from and nearly as quick as its sporty stable-mate, the Golf GTI, when both petrol and electric power units are operating simultaneously, but able to be much more economical at other times. The GTE we sampled also averaged 20 miles of electriconly running, switching seamlessly over to petrol when the battery supply was exhausted, achieving around 45mpg overall. The performance enhancing attributes of hybrid drives are put to good use in the latest crop of exotic McLaren, Porsche and Ferrrari

supercars, however a rather more affordable alternative to them is the stunning BMW i8 sports car, branded as the world’s first sports car with the consumption and emissions values of a family saloon. The i8 can achieve 35mpg on long-distance trips, coupled with a 4.4 second 0-62 mph time – pretty impressive! With any range-extender or plug-in hybrid, range anxiety simply ceases to become an issue. And, yet, by taking advantage of the rapid charging stations which are increasingly appearing around the country, you can grab a quick recharge whenever you pause a journey for a coffee- or comfort-break, returning to your car to enjoy a bonus of another 20 or so miles of free - or low-cost - electric motoring. Is the situation likely to change in the future? Almost certainly electric car range will extend as battery technology improves. Several manufacturers talk confidently of achieving a 300 mile range from mid-priced full electric cars, however this is likely to take up to10 years to achieve. For today, however, plug-in hybrid sales are growing at a significant rate, as they are for most of us the most effective compromise in providing practical green motoring. Images, clockwise from bottom left: the stunning BMW i8; Kia’s Soul, a fun and very practical car; the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is the current best-selling plug-in hybrid.

Blood is vital for patients in accident and emergency situations, patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, and women haemorrhaging in childbirth. Every donor can save or improve up to three lives each time they donate blood. In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating. To register or book an appointment go online at www.blood. co.uk or call 0300 123 2323. Godalming Town Council invites you to Staycation 2016 70 GREAT REASONS TO STAY IN GODALMING AND FARNCOMBE!! A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Godalming Town Council is delighted to bring you its 7th Staycation with an even bigger and better range of exciting and fun activities for individuals to try. We are delighted to welcome back regular favourites such as tennis, swimming and canoeing, but this year we are excited to bring you the chance to have a go at willow weaving some dragonflies and to visit the willow sculptures in the park. The willow sculptures you will see around the Phillips Memorial Park have been created by local artist Sara Holmes. You can also see some of her public works of art in Woking town centre’s Wolsey Place. Sara led the Inspire Mark award-winning willow cyclists project during the 2012 Olympics. Children’s cookery classes are back; baby ballet, tap classes, musical theatre (Matilda), Panto in a Day and, new for this year, an exciting chance to “Come and Sing Pirates of Penzance” (no singing experience needed). Learn to make a granny square crochet workshop, girl’s cricket, free swimming, contemporary painting and drawing workshops, football, bowling and Just Zhoom (Bollywood Style) dance. There is also a chance to see a professional skateboard demonstration and take part in scooter competitions. These are just a few of the examples on offer this year. Most of these exciting activities are at a specially discounted Staycation price or completely free, plus they are all really close to home so you don’t have to worry about expensive travelling costs. With a wealth of National Trust properties, the River Wey, the Town’s sports facilities and historic and cultural places of interest and walks in our delightful countryside, plus our unique and individual shops, Godalming really is a fine place to spend your holiday time. Enjoy browsing through the Staycation activities programme and please don’t forget to mention Staycation when you try an activity or book for an event. I’d like to thank the many organisations and individuals who have contributed so generously in helping to create this year’s Staycation programme. Without their time and resources and subsidising events, it would not have been possible to have included activities for all age ranges. The Staycation week starts on Saturday, 6th August with the TST Staycation Live Music Festival at the Bandstand and finishes on Saturday, 13th August with the third Staycation Farncombe Family Fête at Canon Bowring’s Field, with pony rides, stalls offering goods, music entertainment, children’s rides, side shows, a tea tent, hog roast and more. Enjoy a holiday at home and make Godalming the place to be this summer. I very much look forward to seeing you throughout the Staycation week. Councillor David Hunter Mayor of Godalming July 2015

Craftsman in Iron Phil Kemp talks to one of our local blacksmiths at his forge in Forest Green The ancient art of transforming hard metal into practical, tactile and beautiful objects has its origins through the far distant mists of time. And indeed this almost mysterious art has remained largely unchanged over many hundreds of years – almost as though in blatant rebellion against the tireless march of technological advancement that has enveloped the modern world. Tucked away in the picturesque Surrey Hills countryside is a forge that has for over thirty years crafted iron into all manner of amazing things, and all by hand proving that the blacksmith’s hammer will never rest regardless. James Davies describes himself as an artist in iron, and there is no doubt that it is a perfect description. Working from his Forest Green Forge, adjacent to the village green and with The Parrot Inn close by, James wields his hammer with measured skill and boundless energy. All around him scattered across workbenches are the tools of his trade – with of course the forge at its heart, its flames

roaring to the tune of the bellows pumping air to ensure the metal to be beaten glows almost white hot. James’ story of how he came to be a blacksmith is fascinating, as much by its novelty as it is for his love of iron. “Although I initially started working with iron when I left school, I actually spent my early years in the aircraft industry making precision panels for instruments in Harrier jump jets,” said James, with a smile on his face as he saw my surprised reaction. “Seems strange I know, but my experience there of having to work with materials accurate to thousandths of an inch taught me how to craft with amazing accuracy.” His lucky break was being recruited by one of the country’s most celebrated blacksmiths who helped forge James’ future. “I joined the Richard Quinnell Forge in Leatherhead at a time when blacksmithing for art was really taking off. I was working alongside top-class artists doing ironwork, and was part of the industry at its peak when Richard launched the British Artist Blacksmith Association. The Association quickly raised the profile of ironwork art to the public.” Forest Green Forge has a gallery where visitors can see examples of the enormous range of metal items they have created over the years. “I used to do a lot of interior design

25 tonnes of pressure to do the initial work, and then do the final shaping using a handheld hammer. The real skill is getting the metal to exactly the right temperature. Too hot and it will fizzle, spark and burn so that the piece is ruined. Too cold and it won’t be workable.” The story of the forge buildings is as fascinating as that of what is hidden within its walls. “In 1996 there were only sheds here, all falling apart. I heard about an old 16th century brick-built barn that was threatened with demolition. I had it dismantled and shipped here literally in kit form to be erected as the forge buildings you see now. In 1996 it won the South of England Best Development Award.” A range of forge produced items, representative of his work

work like tables and chairs made from iron, the tables with glass tops,” said James as he showed me around the gallery, where he also has a bench covered in black albums each containing photos of work past and present. “However, the market has changed with people wanting minimalist things, empty rooms not being really artistic. I have got my own niche market now making special commissions, things that you just can’t buy off the shelf. Customers can pop-in and ask me to sketch the ideas they have so we can visualise what they want, or they bring their own sketches. And that’s where the albums also come into their own, stimulating ideas.”

Surreally dominating the centre of the forge gallery is a large free-standing sculpture of an alien flying saucer, seemingly completely out of place until you take time to feel the smoothness of the intricate panel beating, admire the sculpting, and wonder at the subtle variations in colour of the copper patination. This work of art is perhaps the perfect advertisement for James Davies, Craftsman in Iron.

The longer I was in the forge the more I appreciated just how skilled blacksmiths are with their ability not just at heating and shaping metal, but also in understanding how different metals will react in terms of colour and finish. “The craft of metal is so involved and is something you learn over many years. In my office I have got endless files with notes I have made of technology and technique. Metal is always trying to fight. Imagine shaping a piece of plasticine, how easy it is to shape. Take a piece of metal and it will always try to do the opposite of what you want. You have to learn how to beat it into shape; it’s like a battle really.” James pointed out different objects in the gallery, and you could sense the pride he holds for his work. There are particular items he enjoys making. “I have made so many dragons over the years. They work so well in iron. But I also love making flowers out of metal,” he said pointing out some remarkably life-like metal blooms. “Those lilies look so delicate. And of course they are.” I asked for a layman’s explanation on the process of taking a rod of iron through all of the stages needed before it ends up as a fragile-looking flower petal. “I can take a six metre long half-an-inch thick strip of metal and forge that into a three millimetre thin strip and shape it into a flower petal,” James explained. “I can get the forge fire up to temperatures around 800 degrees, obviously very hot and hot enough to make iron soft so it behaves a bit like cheese. I have a power hammer with

The GUTS Motor Tour

Picture the scene. It is the perfect September day, with azure blue skies, a welcoming light breeze with the beautiful backdrop of the South Downs. You are surrounded by an exceptional display of over 50 examples of automotive history, from a 1912 Rolls Royce Torpedo Phaeton Tourer to a 1955 Citroen 2CV Fourgonette with much in between. There is much laughter and automobile chatter as picnics are dispatched alongside an enjoyable glass or two. Behind the scenes, away from this image of bucolic serenity, there is some frenzied marking of the fiendish photo quiz and a spirited adjudication on the best limerick and poem. Once completed it is prize giving and raffle time before venturing home. This was the end of the GUTS Motor Tour 2015, which had seen these fabulous cars travel more than 50 miles through some exceptional countryside via Cowdray Park, Midhurst and finishing at the Weald & Downland Museum near Goodwood. First started in 2002, the GUTS Motor Tour has raised in excess of £55,000 for GUTS, whose goal is to improve bowel cancer survival rates through more effective screening, detection and treatment, and by raising awareness of the disease. GUTS funds a Family Colorectal Cancer Clinic (FCCC) based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital which offers advice and screening to people at a high risk of developing bowel cancer. They have also funded equipment and facilities to help improve the care and treatment of bowel cancer patients at the RSCH. The charity also funds research into new ways of detecting bowel cancer and into better ways of treating the disease.

50

The 2015 tour raised an excellent £3,800 on the day for GUTS. Thanks go to Penningtons Manches Solicitors for sponsoring the rally plates and to the following companies who offered raffle prizes: Swain & Jones Farnham; Forest Mere Spa, Liphook; Hunters, Guildford; Forest Foragers; BeauPort Kitchens, Alton; Cowdray Farm Shop, Midhurst; G-Live, Guildford; Piazza Firenze, Godalming; Stag on the River, Eashing nr Godalming; and Grayshott Pottery. Thanks also to Cowdray Park and the Weald & Downland Museum for hosting the cars and drivers along the way, and to Godalming Butchers for providing the breakfast! The GUTS Motor Tour really is a fabulous day out for drivers and passengers and a wonderful spectacle for all vintage and classic car enthusiasts. The majority of the cars are either veteran, vintage or classic and they usually end up with a fabulous variety of makes and models joyfully rubbing hubcaps. If you haven’t got a suitable motor to drive, you are always welcome to come along to their final destination and enjoy the cars when they arrive. The 2016 Tour will take place on Sunday 4th September and will include a mid-morning pit stop at Stansted Park, near Rowlands Castle in Hampshire before it arrives for a late lunch at Hinton Ampner, near Alresford, Hampshire where entrants will be allowed full access to the house and its magnificent grounds, courtesy of the National Trust. Why not join us later this year? FIND OUT MORE

Milford Horticulture Society Tuesday 26th July 8pm The next meeting will be in Milford Village Hall when Ray Broughton will be taking his audience through how to select and display produce for shows. With their Autumn Show taking place on Saturday 27th August, this will be very timely advice for all potential entries. Talks are free for members and non-members and guests are very welcome to attend for a fee of £1 payable at the door. For more information on Milford Horticultural Society, its talks, visits and shows check the website www.milfordhortsociety.org.uk or contact Hilary Potter on 01483 415710 or email potters38@hotmail.com. Milford Club The members of Milford Club are raising money to provide vital life-saving defibrillator devices for the village. The total cost for this project is over £3,000 but I gather they are well on their way. There will be two defibrillator devices made available to the public in Milford. One will be located outside the front of Milford Club, and another outside the Milford Village Hall. In the event of a cardiac emergency, where a person’s heartbeat has stopped, you will be directed as appropriate by emergency services to use the defibrillator to re-start the person’s heart. The defibrillator device is self-contained and smart enough to talk you through an emergency even if you are not on the phone to emergency services. Milford Club is dedicated to this project. If you would like to make a donation to help get them to their target, or for further details, do contact milfordthesecretary@btconnect. com or call Jackie Clarke on 01483 416497. GARDENING

With Beth Otway

The Gold standard B: The colours of the fins are so good now. B: Do you have any planting combinations that you particularly enjoy in this garden? AS: Well, yes, there’s a thing called Catananche caerulea ‘Tizi n Test’, and it’s a sort of pale violety floaty thing, quite low.

Garden designer Andy Sturgeon was awarded a Gold Medal and the coveted award of Best in Show, for the fabulous Show Garden he designed for The Telegraph at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I caught up with Andy Sturgeon at Chelsea Flower Show, to find out more about The Telegraph Garden. Beth: Do you have a favourite area of your garden? Andy Sturgeon: Well, I’ve got one – the fire pit bowl area is a favourite place to be, but my favourite view is from the front of the garden, looking right the way down to the far corner. B: And are you pleased with how The Telegraph Garden has turned out? AS: Yeah, there’s nothing that I’d want to be better – and I don’t think I can often say that. B: Did you have any issues with the bronze fins in your garden? AS: No… well we did actually, one of the fins, because of the budget some of the fins are powder-coated with a much cheaper spray on the back; I mean, it’s really good – and you can hardly tell, but some of them are only patinated on the front. We went to great lengths when we had them fabricated, we did an awful lot of drawings for this garden, and on the leg of each one it was welded on which is the front, and they did it the wrong way around. They were all wrapped up, you see, and we installed them all, they were all protected, and because we’d gone to such great lengths to make sure they didn’t get it wrong we trusted it, and when the time came, we took it all off – it was the first one we uncovered, and everyone went “ah, that looks really good” and I said “no it doesn’t, it’s the wrong colour”. We had to send it to Ipswich and get it re-done. 54

AS: If you look here, you can see this is the Catananche here hanging over, you can see the open flowers and the closed flowers, and with the salvia there, and then you’ve got this low-grown plant, and then beyond the little Centaurea, slightly more pinky, so that combination, I’ve drifted it across there – that’s my favourite bit, because it was unexpected. B: You’ve used a lot of stone and different materials in your garden. AS: Okay. People have asked about this, because we covered it up. See the wall over the back over there. Those stones are 100mm thick, and they’re much, much taller than you can see, because there’s a lot underground. They were very difficult to put in, and they went in quite late, because of the way we had to do everything; we came in in the morning, and half of it had fallen over, and flattened the plants. So that was a challenge. B: Had people asked you if they’d fallen over? AS: Somehow word got out, but I’ve denied it to everyone, apart from you. B: It looks so good though. I’m so pleased for you! AS: Thank you very much. B: What’s your favourite garden apart from yours? AS: Cleve West’ garden for M&G is my favourite.

Ask the expert HR Business Consultants has been set up to support small to medium sized businesses. We believe that these companies started their businesses as they are passionate about what they do, but need support in other areas. That is where we come, for seven years we have been helping owners and managers of these businesses with the HR side of the business. We have provided them with contracts, employee handbooks policies but we don’t stop there we have also supported them in situations that they may struggle in as they grow. This is our areas of expertise. We receive many enquiries and this is one that we were approached about recently. I have an employee who has a performance issue, when I speak to them their work improves but after a few weeks it goes back to a level which we cannot sustain. The person is well liked, how can I ensure their performance stays at the level we want? This can be quite a common problem as businesses grow. Firstly you need to arrange to

speak to the employee to discuss the situation. Ask them to explain why their performance is dropping. Listen carefully to what they are saying, without assumptions. It could be external factors that maybe impacting their focus which they may need support on. It maybe because they are not focussed on goals/targets, or they don’t understand why they have them. They will reveal key trigger words which will allow you to understand and bring focus. Remember one employee maybe target driven whereas another may have a creative side that needs goals set differently. Once you have identified this information, you will be able to work out how to engage you employee to ensure they are consistently performing to the level you want.

Sensational salads It’s almost summer which means it is time for salads. There are masses of fabulous ingredients out there which will help you to create some terrific combinations. Use them as lighter starters or side dishes or go large and make them your main meal. The first three salads come courtesy of Shirlee Posner (eatsurrey.co.uk) and Secretts Farmshop in Milford.

Heritage beetroot salad with pomegranate molasses

2. Spoon the dressing ingredients straight on the salad and mix well. 3. Place on a serving dish and decorate with flowers if you have them. Secretts sells one of the best pomegranate molasses on the market from Lebanese food importer Mymoune. Dearer than those in supermarkets for sure, but taste is so superior its totally worth it! Since you only use it in small amounts anyway in my book, a good investment.

Chicken, Mango, Avocado and Sweet Chilli Salad This is the perfect salad to make with young tender summer vegetables. Secretts baby beetroots inspired me to write this recipe and it tastes as good as it looks. The vegetables to complement the beetroot used in this salad can be swapped and substituted depending on availability and I would make this with corn, fine green beans or baby runners too. I served this with a dollop of fat free Greek Yogurt sprinkled with sumac and a drizzle of oil. This would also work well with goat’s cheese, a selection of charcuterie or as part of a cold buffet. Ingredients 5 medium cooked roasted beetroot, peeled and roughly chopped (use golden and red here if you like); 50g cooked broad beans; 150g cooked tenderstem broccoli, chopped; 2-3 fresh nasturtium or other edible flowers (optional). Dressing 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses; 1 tablespoon fresh chopped chives (or other fresh herbs such as mint); 1 dessertspoon extra virgin olive oil; 1 dessertspoon red wine vinegar; 1 clove of smoked garlic, crushed; grated zest of 1 small un-waxed lemon; salt and freshly ground black pepper

Ingredients 2 handfuls Secretts mixed salad leaves, washed and spun to remove water; Juice of 1 lime; 2tsp of extra virgin olive oil ; salt and freshly ground pepper; 1 large roasted chicken breast, skinned and cut into chunks; 1 mango, peeled and sliced; 1avocado, peeled and sliced; 2 tbsp of Thai sweet chilli sauce. Makes 2

Serves 4 Method: 1. Place the vegetables together in a mixing bowl (apart from the flowers).

Eliza’s Tea Room kindly shared their delicious salad recipe with us. This mixture started life as a sandwich from British Sandwich Week and was so popular it was re-invented as a salad. So much so it is now going to be a regular on the specials menu during the summer. It’s easy to make, providing you have all the ingredients to hand.

Method: 1. Get a couple of bowls or plates ready to assemble the salads.

RECIPES 2. First prepare all the ingredients in the list leaving the avocado until last. 3. Put the salad leaves in a mixing bowl. Toss with lime juice and olive oil and seasoning then divide between the bowls. 4. Top the leaves with the chicken, mango and avocado and then drizzle each with a spoon of chilli sauce. Serve immediately. Variations: Add a spoon of Thai fish sauce to the dressing and garnish with chopped mint and fresh coriander leaves oe decorate the salad with some chopped roasted peanuts.

Roasted Salmon, Butternut Squash, Prawn and Asparagus Salad

Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to Gas 5 / 190C/ fan 170C 2. Place the butternut squash in a mixing bowl with the sunflower oil, seasoning and crushed garlic. Mix well so the squash is evenly coated and pour into a roasting tray. Place the tray in the pre-heated oven for 10 minutes. 3. Remove the squash from the oven and place the salmon in the tray and roast together for a further 1520 minutes. Once cooked remove, set aside and cool. 4. While you are allowing the roasted fish and salad to cool mix the dressing ingredients together and set aside. 5. Now wash the salad leaves and spin. Divide the leaves between 2 salad bowls and drizzle with a little salad dressing. 6. Top the leaves with the roasted squash, cooked prawns, asparagus and flake the salmon using it to top the salad. 7. Scatter with asparagus, tomatoes and coconut then pour over the remaining dressing. Serve immediately.

Other ideas... Potato Salads

A good potato salad is often a thing of beauty. Here are a couple of suggestions, both of which can be served warm or cold:

This is a filling salad perfect for warm weather eating! It can be made in advance and is very transportable too (keep the dressing separate though until you need it). Ingredients 300g butternut squash, peeled and cut into chunks; 1 dessertspoon sunflower oil; salt and freshly ground black pepper; I clove of crushed garlic; 100g asparagus; I large fillet of salmon (approx 170g); 150g large cooked tiger prawns; 2 large handfuls of Secretts mixed salad leaves; 100g asparagus spears, lightly steamed; 8-10 small cherry or plum tomatoes, halved lenghthways. Dressing 1 dessertspoon sesame oil; juice of 1 lime; 1 dessertspoon low salt naturally fermented soy sauce; 1 dessertspoon coconut sugar; pinch Maldon sea salt; some toasted shredded coconut to garnish. Serves 2

1. Steam or boil Maris Piper (or similar) potatoes with their skins. When tender, drain and leave to cool. Meanwhile, finely shop shallots or onions and add to a salad dish. Add some good Dijon mustard vinaigrette and mayonnaise. Peel the potatoes and slice them medium thick. Add to the salad dish and mix well with the onions and dressing. Add chopped chives and parsley, season to taste and serve. 2. Steam or boil new potatoes in their skins until tender. Drain and leave to cool. Make a vinaigrette with wholegrain mustard, cider vinegar and olive oil. Slice some large, sweet gherkins and good quality frankfurters. Slice the potatoes in two and mix them with the vinaigrette, gherkins and frankfurters. Season to taste and serve.

Noodle salad

This is a very quick side salad with a difference. Serves 4 Cook 250g egg or soba noodles until tender, drain and rinse in cold water. Make a dressing with 3 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tbsp sesame oil. Toast 2 tbsp sesame seeds in a dry pan, 5 minutes. Mix gently to coat noodles.

WALK - Peaslake Circular This is a very charming walk, with some majestic views and lovely houses guaranteed to give you house envy! The walk takes you through woods and fields with hardly any ups or downs. It is dog friendly (although there are two stiles which a very big dog may struggle with) and only the final, short section was muddy when I walked it at the end of April. SR

The walk 1. Go up the path at the left-hand side of the Inn and into a field at the back.. Stay on its left-hand side until you are level with a large house off to the left. Here turn right and walk across the field and down to cross a stile into another field. Stay on its right-hand side until exiting, to the right, over a stile and onto a road. Jink left and turn right into the mouth of Burchetts Hollow. Immediately turn left through a gate and walk out across a very large field. The path exits in the far left-hand bottom corner through trees onto a road. 2. Turn right and walk along this road, passing Oak Farm. Take a footpath out left into and across a field, passing a small lake to reach a road. Go straight across and into another field. Stay on the right-hand side as you climb a rise and enter a fence/hedge corridor. Continue forward, dipping down then up and crossing another field to reach road opposite a large house. Go left for 20 yards and then take a footpath out right and into a field. 3. Go anti-clockwise around its edge to reach the far left-hand corner. A gate takes you into a wide grassy corridor where you turn right and follow the track down

a dip and up. At the top, follow the path through a small gate into and across a field. You can see Dilton Farm away to your left. Go over a stile and along a short corridor to a T junction with a wide track. Turn left and walk along to turn left into the entrance to Dilton Farm. 4. Pass the wooden house and turn right on a footpath into a field. Walk clockwise around the edge of the field through into the next field. The path breaks off left, over a stile and along through an avenue of large trees. You can see Knowle Farm ahead. Near the house the path swings sharp left and you follow it, ignoring the footpath right. Pass a few houses and reach Hound House and a road. Cross (because of the blind bend) to go right for 100 yards to take a footpath left, into a field. 5. Follow the wide track half-right, out across the field until it turns right and goes through a gate at the edge of Wickham’s Copse. Just inside the gate the path forks

PROFILE The Fountain Centre And thanks to the generosity of The Holistic Centre, in Wiggins Yard off Bridge Street, current and recent patients are now able to go to Godalming on Friday mornings for a range of therapies including massage, reiki and reflexology.

For 20 years now, the Fountain Centre, Surrey’s local, independent, cancer charity, has been providing support, counselling and complementary therapies to cancer patients and their families from all over Surrey and the surrounding areas. It is based next to St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, and the heart and soul of all its work is there. But times are changing. Some cancer treatments can now be delivered closer to patients’ homes. There are new services at Frimley Park Hospital and Ashford and St Peters, so the Fountain Centre now has volunteer therapists working alongside them. The latest developments involve taking the essence of the Fountain Centre completely away from the hospital environment. Some people find it very hard to visit us in Guildford, even for the most relaxing therapeutic sessions. The memories of surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions can sometimes be too offputting and painful. So you may find a Fountain Centre service is now available in your local church hall, or a well-being centre or a gym near you. We are looking to develop new opportunities all over Surrey, but at present the Godalming area is giving us the biggest welcome. Classes for the Pink Ribbon Programme, which is a 6 week course of Pilates specially designed for patients recovering from breast cancer surgery, have been running in Elstead and Godalming for several months.

Further down the line, we have been offered the opportunity to run a Mindfulness Course in Café Mila, also in Godalming, for current and recent cancer patients. Mindfulness essentially is awareness; it is about noticing our thoughts, our feelings, our bodily sensations and anything that is around us and happening right now. It is the opposite of habitual, automatic living, and it teaches us to live more consciously, with gratitude and ‘kindfulness’. Professor Mark Williams, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Oxford, explains: “Most of us have issues that we find hard to let go and mindfulness can help us deal with them more productively. We can ask: ‘Is trying to solve this by brooding about it helpful, or am I just getting caught up in my thoughts?’ Awareness of this kind also helps us notice signs of stress or anxiety earlier and helps us deal with them better.” The potential value to cancer patients is very exciting. So that’s what’s new. What doesn’t change is our ethos and independent status. The Fountain Centre is run by a small team of staff and has over 100 volunteers. The majority are qualified therapists and counsellors, and between them they have about 2,000 appointments a month. We have a wig bank, a lending library, and can provide information about local support groups, welfare benefits and specialist cancer charities. Some people simply like to come and sit somewhere comfortable, that doesn’t feel like ‘hospital’, between tests and treatments. The Fountain Centre is not part of the NHS. It has to raise all the money it needs to keep going by its own efforts. It costs about £220,000 per year to run, which is tiny compared to other well-known local causes. But we keep going, and growing, entirely through the love and generosity of the community we support. FIND OUT MORE

Refreshments are always on sale. Doors open at the Bandroom at 7.00pm and the film will start at 7.45pm. The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity Saturday 17th September This wonderful charity that supports babies and children with Cerebral Palsy is organising a walk from Arundel to Brighton. With two walk distances available of 35k or 12km, you can choose what would be suitable for you and still enjoy the staggeringly beautiful views and scenery which Sussex has to offer. Starting from Arundel Castle, the walk will span the magnificent landscape of the South Downs before finishing at Devil’s Dyke on the outskirts of Brighton. They have teamed up with Pied A Terre Adventure to organise this event, so you can be sure that you will be well looked after. There will be regular refreshment stops, plenty of encouragement along the way and a well-deserved hot meal for all on completion. There will also be an exclusive mystery prize draw for all those fundraisers who reach the

£100 target. Everyone is invited to take part, regardless of ability. To register (£35) per person or for under 16’s a special rate will apply. For more information on the A2B Walk, go to www.dvlcc.org.uk/events/16/arundel-tobrighton-walk/ or call Catherine on 01403 780444 or email catherine.bristow@dvlcc.org.uk. Hydon Hill Godalming people are uniting to bring back to life an historic woodland area that has fallen into disrepair, in the hope it will find a new home in the community’s heart as an ‘interactive sensory garden’. From garden designers to construction workers, local heroes are giving thousands of pounds worth of their time and skills for free to revitalise the garden at Hydon Hill care home. This new garden, set amongst army barracks dating back to World War II and scenic woodland with plenty of local wildlife, will be created on land where once stood a memorial garden for war hero and charity founder Leonard Cheshire. The team at Hydon Hill are also raising funds to create a new café overlooking the garden. Meanwhile work has already begun on an accompanying art gallery in one of the historic army buildings, which will exhibit and sell art work and pottery created by the residents, using the onsite kiln. This vast complex at Hydon Hill, which also includes a well-stocked charity shop, is not just for residents and their visitors to enjoy, but for all the local community to use. In order to complete these works the home is continuing to welcome any volunteers and donations. If you would like to donate please visit www. leonardcheshire.org/hydonhillappeal.

JOTTINGS - YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD Brooklands Museum We mention Brooklands quite a lot in the magazine so it’s very nice to see that the volunteers of Brooklands Museum have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. Volunteers cover a wide variety of roles vital to the Museum, from stewarding and guiding both adults and school children to restoration of aircraft and vehicles, research, marshalling at events, painting and gardening. Over 800 volunteers are registered at the Museum, coming from every sector of the community and professional background, and priding themselves on their professionalism, knowledge and enthusiasm. Visitors often comment about how much their visits are enhanced by interaction with them. John Silver, the Volunteers Resources Manager would be pleased to hear

from anyone interested in volunteering at the Museum at johnsilver@brooklandsmuseum.com. Shooting Star Chase Hospice We’ve had a lovely letter in from someone called Samantha and we thought we would share it with you.” My name is Samantha and my nephew is now 12 days old. He and my sister are now in the care of shooting star chase hospice (Christopher location in Guildford Surrey) and they have been wonderful. Because of this I am doing a firewalk on 3rd November across hot coals of 1200*F. Not only am I looking to raise money but my mission is to get 10 celebrities to donate. If I hit £500 I will get a tattoo of a shooting star chase character and if I hit £1500 I will shave my hair. I wondered if you could please please help by giving me a mention, tweet, share, anything to spread awareness! Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated!! I want to do my best to support my little fighter of a nephew. My Facebook name is Samantha Ginn and my Twitter account is @samantha_ginn. I am using the hashtags: #sgfirewalk and #celebchallenge”. So dear reader if you can help Samantha in her fund raising quest, it would be brilliant. Not sure if we have any celebrity readers, but if there are, well, it would be fantastic if you could lend your support.

Their ‘Try Before You Buy’ offer has also proved increasingly popular with people keen to stay overnight in the village to get a feel for what it is like there. Potential purchasers are invited to enjoy a complimentary overnight stay in one of the village guest suites and enjoy a continental breakfast in the comfort of their own room the following morning.
