• YOUR LOCAL TEAM Our main article this month is on the benefits of walking, to which I can attest. I have long been interested in walking, ever since my dad would take out of an evening for a stroll and then reward me with a portion of chips which we would share as we walked back home. Having a young Labrador means that I now walk more than ever, with a minimum of two walks a day. According to technology, I am averaging 5.5 miles a day which is certainly good for my health. It is also good for general well-being, giving you a chance to reflect, to see what is around you, to keep away from your phone, and generally appreciate the beauty that surrounds us in this lovely part of the world. Since we started our magazine in 2009, we have always published a monthly walk and will continue to do so to encourage people to get out and about. There are a number of groups like the Ramblers and Walking for Health that enable people to not only get out, but meet other likeminded people. Many of them feature in our Jottings every month, so do think about trying them out. While I will always extol the value and delight of having a dog, it is not the only reason to get out and about. We now have over 12,000 subscribers to our monthly e-newsletter which goes out no more than twice a month with a preview of our next edition, our forthcoming competitions and some of the offers provided by our advertisers, some of which are exclusive to subscribers. If you don’t want to miss out and want to receive this, please go to our website at www.vantagepointmag.co.uk and sign up there.

Watch their weight! Obesity rates are increasing for our pet dogs, says Zoe Blake SO IT’S that time of year when we all make those New Year’s resolutions. Lose some weight, eat better and try and have a healthier lifestyle... sound familiar? But what about our dogs. Is it time for them to have a new lease of life? Sadly current scientific literature states that 40% of dogs are overweight, so with an estimated 9.3 million dogs living in the UK that’s approximately 3.7 million dogs that are potentially suffering with health and welfare issues. Obesity is the most concerning disease of our modern time and causes a range of illnesses and seriously affects quality of life. Every day on the news, in the magazines and on social media there will be something highlighting this. We can speak up and seek help and advice but what about our dogs? We need to be responsible for them and act accordingly. Like with us, if they eat too much and don’t do enough exercise they will naturally put on weight. As the weight starts to escalate so does the strain on the heart/joints and other body organs. So what can we do to help our canine friends? Firstly we need to actually assess whether they are overweight and then evaluate their feeding and lifestyle. The dog world is full of so many different breeds and crosses and so relying on ideal breed weights is not really the best approach. Yes it’s good to have an ideal weight target however the modern approach is to body condition score. Anyone can do this, you basically match your dog’s shape and description to the chart and then it gets a score.
So you have been told your dog needs to lose a few kgs, what now? I would firstly go home and sit down and actually write down what your dog is fed on a daily basis ensuring you ask every member of the household, include in this how much exercise they have. Then have a realistic look and see how this could be improved. • Start to measure their daily food rations and divide into small frequent meals (3-5 is ideal), following the manufacturers guidelines on feeding quantity • Cut out any human leftovers that may sneak into the bowl • Reduce the treats you give...these easily accumulate • Increase the exercise, add in an extra walk if you can. Shorter frequent walks are more effective than one long marathon. Try these for a month, reassess, if the weight is not starting to reduce then seek further help. Most veterinary practices should have a nurse who has been trained in weight management. Alternatively please feel free to get in touch with me.
If you feel like you would like to do this for yourself please visit www.royalcaninhealthyweight.co.uk/pet-obesity. Your veterinary surgeon/nurse should be using BCS along with their bodyweights to advise whether they think some weight loss may be beneficial. If you haven’t ever heard of this then please ask next time you visit your surgery.

CRAFT
INSPIRATION Reusable bags these days are more and more becoming a trending alternative to single-use plastic bags. This month Giulia Mauri shows you how to decorate an ordinary blank canvas bag to make it into something special to be carried around the high street with pride. It's an ideal project to be done with children from the age of 3 onwards that will literally help you reduce your carbon footprint!
DIFFICULTY: (easy)
FUN:
Gather all of the materials. Blank canvas bags can be purchased online for as little at 60p each. There are so many different sizes and models; with short or long handles and canvas thickness varies as well. If you are handy with a sewing machine you could indeed sew your own too.
1
As for the fabric paint, it’s available in so many different colours, but to minimise the cost of this project, you could just buy primary (red, blue and yellow) and create secondary colours (purple, orange, green) by mixing them together. You’ll also need a medium size paintbrush, a couple of dishes to mix the colours in.
(lots!)
COST: (£3-£10)
When the hand/foot has completely been painted you are ready for the printing! Position the hand just above the canvas and then gently rest it on the fabric of the bag and press it against it. (Tip: You want to make sure that even the paint in the concave part of the hand is touching the canvas as well otherwise you’ll end up with a gap).
4
Wash or wipe the hand or foot before painting the other one. To fix the print permanently on your bag, turn it inside out once dry and iron it using a high heat setting.
5
Prepare the area you are going to be working in. Newspapers or an oilcloth would be ideal. If you are choosing to decorate with your children’s footprints you definitely want to carry out this project in the bathroom to avoid rainbow prints all over your lovely house.
2
Begin by painting rainbow stripes on your child’s hand or foot. This process needs to be done fairly quickly to avoid the colour drying out. For an educational twist ask your child to pick the orders of which they would like the colours to be on the print beforehand. If they are a little bit older you could get them to stir the colours in the pot as well.

10 reason to LOVE WALKING Could you find time for a brisk 30 min walk daily? The benefits can be truly inspirational, says Linda Routledge IN GENERAL terms we all know that walking can be a great form of exercise, and the majority of us may well concede that we don’t walk nearly enough. Whilst sitting here writing this article I am feeling somewhat guilty that I haven’t managed a brisk walk today (must get out for lunch!). The majority of us walk simply to get from A to B. Walking has become the casualty of our modern lifestyle, being replaced by cars in the fast paced world. Unfortunately as we walk less, so the rate of chronic diseases increases dramatically. In this modern era of energy saving devices it takes a little bit more effort and organisation to find the time for a brisk walk, however if we do the benefits can be truly spectacular. MOOD Stress and depression in the workplace are increasing at an alarming rate, accounting for 35% of all work related ill health cases, and the use of antidepressants has risen dramatically in recent years. You know that feeling when you have had a tough day at work and it takes a glass of wine or a little chocolate to wind down. Walking is a much healthier alternative with the same benefits. Research has shown that regular brisk walks can have a dramatic

effect on our mood, actually modifying our nervous system such that we experience less stress, depression and even anger. What’s more, when walking outside there is much more exposure to natural sunlight (severely lacking in our modern officebased life) that can counter the effect of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Walking with another person or a social group can also help to promote the feeling of being connected with others, boosting mood. CREATIVITY & PROBLEM SOLVING Some days you just cannot get your brain in gear, problems seem insurmountable and solutions much harder to find. On these days what we really need is a brisk walk. Research has shown that people come up with more creative ideas while walking than sitting. And even better, the effects carry on for a while, meaning you think more creatively when you return to your desk as well. Getting away from your desk and boosting blood flow to the brain with a moderately active walk can be really beneficial but do not do too much, as high intensity walking can be detrimental to the thinking process. Home Counties Care is officially 'outstanding'! Home Counties Carers is a local family run home care business that provides friendly, reliable, trustworthy and competent carers to the elderly in their own homes. We recently achieved an OUTSTANDING rating from the CQC which puts us in the top 2 % of home care providers in Surrey and possibly the UK! “It is clear from the quality of care provided to those using this service that the staff and management are committed to person centred care and are constantly exceeding the expectations of the people that use the service. I would like to congratulate them on their work in this area and their achievement in receiving an OUTSTANDING rating overall.” Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care

If someone is friendly, reliable, trustworthy and competent they are on the right track to becoming a great Carer. Everyone at Home Counties Carers shares the same belief; that all of our clients deserve the best care.
Matthew and Lucinda founded Home Counties Carers almost 6 years ago from their garage in West Clandon, Surrey. Since then the business has grown positively and moved to a new office in East Horsley and exciting a new base in Banstead.

pound the streets alone or get to the gym. Although many of us wouldn’t immediately consider walking as a weight loss exercise, it does in fact improve the body’s response to insulin, which can help to reduce body fat. Also, did you know that walking burns the same calories as running; it just takes longer to cover the same distance? So a brisk 30 minute walk every day (about 2 miles) burns exactly the same calories as running 10km twice a week. And walking tones the areas of the body that we often want to focus on, like legs, bums and tums. Walking is also one of the most cost effective low-impact exercises to increase metabolism and start weight loss. SLEEP & ENERGY How often do you find your day is spent yearning for your bed, only to toss and turn all night, waking up feeling groggy and drained? Modern life can be so fast paced and draining that turning off at night just becomes a battle. Unfortunately this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as we are so groggy during the day that we cannot function effectively and worries follow us to bed. You might be surprised to learn that a regular brisk walk can boost daytime energy levels which in turn can help you sleep deeper and longer at night. However be cautious about timing your walk, brisk exercise can boost energy levels so much that it becomes difficult to fall asleep. Better to schedule the walk for earlier in the day (lunchtime is ideal) to boost afternoon energy levels and help with falling asleep later. BONE HEALTH So much of our day is now spent sitting down that there is very little stimulus for our bodies to build strong healthy bones, increasing our risk of developing osteoporosis (decreased bone density). Our bones are not fixed structures but in fact undergo constant remodelling to suit our needs. Our sedentary lifestyle is resulting in a chronic reduction in bone density amongst the general population, the overall result being more fractures. Walking, however, can reduce the risk of hip fracture by 30%. Walking adds

more load to the bones, stimulating the production of more bone cells. But studies have gone even further and found that if you increase your pace (have a brisk walk rather than stroll), change direction regularly during your walk, or include a steep hill you can give even more protection against osteoporosis and fractures. HEART DISEASE As one of the biggest modern-day killers, there is a huge amount of research supporting the prevention of chronic heart disease. Studies have now proven time and time again that simply walking every day can dramatically reduce your risk of developing chronic heart disease. A daily brisk walk results in a reduction in blood pressure, reduces cholesterol levels and can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease or stroke. In fact, a study investigating high risk adults found that an extra 2,000 steps a day beyond their normal was associated with an 8% reduced risk of having a cardiovascular event. CANCER & DIABETES You may be surprised to read that walking can alleviate chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes but the effects are now well documented. A brisk walk can help manage and even prevent Type II Diabetes. The body’s response to insulin is improved, and even a small reduction in weight can delay or prevent onset of this disease. Walking may also reduce your chances of developing some cancers including breast, prostate and bowel cancer. These types of cancers are the most influenced by a

Local Walking Groups If you would rather walk with a group, here are some suggestions. lack a physical activity, and even a small amount of activity improves natural antioxidants and lymphatic filtering, both of which eradicate pre-cancerous cells before they can take hold. DIGESTION Exercise in general is critically important for our digestion. Whilst we breathe, our diaphragm presses down on the digestive tract, massaging it and helping the digestive process. Unfortunately when we sit for long periods of time, our intestines are actually squashed and the diaphragm cannot descend fully so cannot help digestion. Not only does walking help healthy digestion, it can have impressive results for those with bowel conditions. Studies have shown that regular exercising including walking saw a dramatic improvement in abdominal pain and other symptoms for those with IBS. PREVENT DEMENTIA Currently around 1 in 14 of us will develop dementia over 65 and that number decreases to 1 in 6 over the age of 80. Worldwide one new case of dementia is diagnosed every four seconds, making cognitive decline the most pressing issue of the 21st century. Crucially there is now a wealth of evidence to show that walking regularly can improve the health of our grey matter and even bring back some grey matter that has been lost! ANTI-AGING We all want to look and feel younger but walking can actually achieve this. A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress provided evidence that regular aerobic exercise triggers an anti-aging process that helps to repair old DNA, suggesting that it may delay the aging process. Walking is one of the simplest and easiest ways to get active, and is eminently suitable for so many people for so many reasons. Take your first step today! Happy New Houseplant • GARDENING
With Beth Otway Simply remove a fully developed leaf, and pot it up carefully in gritty, well-drained compost, ensuring that the base of the leaf is touching the compost. Cover with a clear plastic bag if you wish, but it's not essential.
NOW THAT the Christmas decorations have been taken down, if you find yourself wondering how to add a renewed freshness to your home, if you dream of an energising, yet relaxing sanctuary, then you might wish to consider growing some new houseplants and bringing some living greenery to your home. It's best to work with the conditions that your home can provide. I find I can more accurately determine the brightness of a room if I am not trying to match it to a coveted plant that I am trying desperately to place. Don't worry, I can assure you that there are fabulous houseplants for any situation. I must also tell you that I recommend collecting rainwater to water all indoor plants - it can be awkward I know but worth it!
If your home offers somewhat shadier conditions, don't despair, there are plenty of beautiful and stylish houseplant companions that will love and enhance your room. Spathiphyllum wallisii, known as the peace lily, is such a darling of a houseplant. It’s easy going and great to be around, complementing any style of decor. Thriving in partially shaded, to shaded conditions, peace lilies have a fresh look and feel; they also purify the air, removing toxins. The more plants you install in a room, the greater the purifying effect and the sumptuous decadent feel. If your room is really rather shaded, opt for a houseplant that will favour these conditions. Zamioculcas zamiifolia, the ZZ plant, is quite amazing, it thrives in partially shaded to deeply shaded conditions and can be grown in rooms with only artificial light. Its green, shiny leaves add a charming presence and life to any dimly lit room. If your interest in houseplants tends to wane during the summer months, then you'll be glad to know that the ZZ plant is remarkably tolerant of neglect. All of these plants will all be happy in temperatures Left: African violet. Above: ZZ plant. from 15C-25C. Below from left: Aloe Vera (Beth Otway) and a peace lily.
If your home is bright and full of natural light, a fabulous Aloe vera plant might tempt you. This beautiful, architectural succulent will provide you with fleshy leaves, which you can remove as and when their inner gel, with its cooling and soothing properties, is required to treat sunburn and other minor injuries. Saintpaulia, or African violets, are often perpetual bloomers on windowsills; they even grow well above radiators. Place your African violet container on a saucer, and top the saucer up with water when the surface of the plant's compost begins to dry out. Deadhead regularly for optimum flowering. Take leaf cuttings to create new plants.

Garden Trends That Will Grow On You
New Year - New Garden! Inspiration & Ideas…
Another New Year, time for making plans and planning changes – out with the old, in with the new! Why not make 2018 the year for getting to grips with your garden? Award-winning garden designers, Boardman Gelly share two key garden trends for 2018… Mindfulness – the pleasure of immersing yourself in the present – not just a well-being buzzword, but a movement that’s really gaining momentum and is set to influence how we design and enjoy our gardens. Think about elements to stimulate the senses: fragrant and therapeutic plants such as lavender; a relaxing water-feature; calming blue and energizing yellow colour accents. Add a hammock or swing-seat for the perfect finishing touch. Grow Your Own – a trend that continues to grow! Spending a little time can save quite a bit of money. If you’re a serious grower and have the space, a greenhouse is an excellent investment. Or if space won’t allow, concentrate your efforts on produce such as squashes, beans and pumpkins – all suited to vertical growing. Salad leaves, herbs and tomatoes all grow well in boxes on balconies or patios and taste even more delicious when they are home-grown! A comfy seating area, a sunken fire pit, built in BBQ or pizza oven are all stylish and practical additions that will help you enjoy your garden – and allow you to entertain within it – all year round! Make 2018 the year for a garden make-over. Contact Boardman Gelly on 01306 611231 or email info@boardman-gelly.co.uk for a free, no obligation quote.

Miso broth with rice noodles I make this dish at least once a week for dinner – it’s a very satisfying meal and also makes you feel really cleansed! It’s so quick and easy, too; you can even make it in the advert breaks, if you are having a TV dinner. Mix it up with your favourite veggies; courgettes, sugar snaps, peas, all work, or try adding some tofu. My guilty pleasure is a splash of Thai sweet chilli sauce.

The Modern Vegetarian FOOD & DRINK •
Butternut Squash Tagine Here is my version of the amazing tagines I’ve had in Morocco. You can, of course, use any other variety of squash available or substitute carrots, turnips or courgettes. (The cooking times will vary slightly for each.)
Ingredients: 1 medium-sized butternut squash, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped pinch of salt, pinch of saffron threads, 3 teaspoons ground cumin, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 2 teaspoons paprika, 2 teaspoons coriander seeds, crushed, 2 x 400g tins tomatoes, crushed by hand, 2 red chillies, split lengthways, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 tablespoon honey, 500ml water, sea salt and black pepper, half a small bunch of coriander, finely chopped, 50g roasted flaked almonds, to garnish. Serves 4.
1. Peel the butternut squash with a potato peeler. Cut in half widthways, then again lengthways, scoop out the seeds with a spoon, then cut into approximately 2cm chunks. Reserve the peel and trim for stock. 2. Heat the olive oil in a pan, sauté the onion until softened, add the garlic and all the dry spices and cook ‘out’ for 2 minutes, until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, chillies, cinnamon stick, honey and water
and bring to the boil. 3. Add the butternut squash, season with sea salt and black pepper and simmer for 30 minutes until the mixture has thickened and the squash is tender, adding more water if necessary. Stir in the coriander and adjust the seasoning. 4. Sprinkle with almonds and serve with Buttered Chilli and Date Couscous (see below). And beware of the chillies!
Buttered Chilli Couscous In Morocco, couscous is traditionally lovingly prepared in a couscoussière; it is an art form – a prolonged process of steaming and dredging. The result, however, is sublime! Here is my simple, quick version using instant couscous.
Ingredients: 350g instant couscous, 50g butter, diced, finely grated zest of 1 lemon, 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped pinch of salt, 350ml boiling water, 75g dates, pitted, finely sliced, half a small bunch of coriander, finely chopped. Serves 4.
1. Place the couscous, butter, lemon zest and chilli in a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and pour over boiling water. 2. Cover with clingfilm and leave for 2–3 minutes to
steam. Remove the clingfilm and fluff with a fork to loosen the couscous grains. 3. Stir in the dates and coriander. Serve with the Butternut Squash Tagine as above.

Peaslake to Shamley Green DEVIL'S PUNCH BOWL: HIGH ROAD AND PINE VALLEY This walk takes you through woods and fields with several ups and downs, to a lunch stop in Shamley Green. The walk was submitted by Guildford Rambling Club (see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk). Visitors to these walks are welcome.
• THE WALK 1. Go out of the right-hand side at the back of the car park, up a slope and fork right to reach a road. Cross, jinking left to pick up a track, right, running away from the road and into trees. Walk through trees for just over ½ mile to reach another road. Along the way ignore a path right and pass Bentley Copse holiday site. At the road, go straight across into the side road opposite and immediately fork left onto a path labelled 'Shere Manor Estate Welcomes You To Hurtwood'. 2. Ignore unsigned paths right and left and continue steadily down to reach a gate and beyond it a crosspaths. Continue forward and quickly reach a road. Go straight across to continue along the very wide track. At a yellow and blue arrow post, follow the yellow arrow right and up the very steep valley side. At the top, emerge at a T-junction with a very wide track with a timber yard to your right. Continue forward along the wide track. 3. Soon take a path forking right which dips down and then back up to rejoin the track. Continue forward. Go straight across a big cross tracks and again continue forward. Look for a footpath forking right and down into the next valley. At the bottom the path swings left and reaches a multiway junction at the end of the valley. Continue forward (left) into trees and keep going until reaching a road opposite the end of Jelley’s Hollow. Cross, jinking right, to turn left and follow the Greensand Way (GS) up into trees. This takes you away from the road and then swings right (west) roughly parallel to it. 4. Follow the GS arrows for about ½ mile, along the way passing through the back of Hurtwood car park number 12, to reach Hurtwood car park number 6. Don’t be tempted by the branches left that would take you off down a steep valley side. The GS takes
you across the back of the car park then down to a road. Cross, jinking left, to turn right and continue forward. Pass a gate and then fork left at a 2-way signpost. Gradually descend. Go over a crossing track and continue to another cross-tracks. The signpost here points only left but should also point forward. Go forward, straight across. You are still on the GS. 5. Soon, reach a gate and, immediately before it, the GS takes you down to the left. Drop down a field towards a house and a lake. The path swings right and runs along the edge of the property and into trees. It reaches a T-junction where you turn right and then emerge on a drive. Continue forward (i.e. left) and quickly reach a road. Turn right, walk 100 yards and then take a footpath left, next to Stroud Farm. This is still the GS. Follow it until it passes a large house and reaches a T-junction with a lane. Turn left. Walk about 200 yards and then fork left, continuing forward to reach Shamley Green near the Red Lion and the green. For refreshments, you have the options of the Red Lion and the Bricklayers. 6. After lunch, walk towards the Bricklayers and the back of the green and take a narrow path, left, between Mellow House and the high Leylandii hedge of Summer Meadow. Follow this until it emerges on the tarmac lane that you traversed earlier. Continue forward to the far end of the lane and its T junction with a road. Cross, jinking left and taking a path climbing up to the right. Pass some steps and a gate on the right-hand side. Reach a cross-paths and continue on up the slope to reach a T-junction facing some barns. Turn right and take the track running along between fences. Soon look across to your left to see St Martha’s on the hill across a valley.

7. Follow the track for under ½ mile to reach a right turn through two gates to a road. Go straight across onto the wide vehicle track opposite, signed to Kilnhanger. Follow this track for about a mile passing Kilnhanger and also Mayor House Farm, ignoring lefts and rights and eventually reaching a road. Turn left and walk about 200 yards to a junction where the road turns sharp left. Here, at the start of Row Lane, turn right on a footpath between hedges and down a slope. At the crosspaths at the bottom go straight ahead and up a hill, Dick’s Hill, to cross a tarmac track and continue on down the other side. The path becomes very steep as you descend carefully to a deeply sunken path at the bottom. 8. Cross straight over the path, up over a bank. There is a gate immediately ahead but you turn left and walk across to the hedge to follow a path right and up a slope. Quickly reach a stile, left, and cross into a sloping meadow. Continue along the top edge of the meadow and, after 100 yards, go right and over a stile into a vineyard. Walk along the edge and, at the other side, go over a stile and turn right. Follow the path down to climb over a stile by a large wooden gate and into woodland. Immediately reach a T-junction with a track and turn right. Quickly reach a fork with yellow and blue arrows. Choose the left fork and walk with a wire fence on your right-hand side. Soon you are walking beside a large grassy meadow with good views of the North Downs. 9. At a large wooden gate, ignore a footpath on the left and keep straight on. The path continues past Knowle Farm and its house, over to your right. It then zigzags onto the concrete drive by Hound House with its long converted barn and reaches a road by the hound-pillared entrance gate. Turn right on the road and, because of the blind bend, walk on January 2018
the left. After 100 yards, turn left through a metal gate into a meadow, now with houses of Peaslake visible ahead. Avoid the wide track half-right across the centre and instead take a grassy path running along the left-hand side of the meadow. 10. After a small metal gate, the path runs beside a field. Another small metal gate is followed by another field, after which you emerge in a lane. Turn right to walk along the lane and for some 250 yards until you see a path forking off left. This cuts off a corner and takes you down to the starting car park.

So far this year the Leatherhead store has raised over £30,000 which will go towards ground breaking clinical trials and treatments to help cure cancer more kindly and effectively. CRUK funds research and awareness throughout the UK, including clinical trials at The Royal Marsden hospital into new drugs to cure advanced prostate cancer. Just 2 hours of volunteering in our shop covers the cost of a lung cancer clinical trial for a day - this helps brave patients and dedicated scientists to bring forward the day when notoriously difficult to treat cancers, like lung cancer, are overcome.
