• THE EDITOR'S NOTE In August, Marcus and I were very fortunate to be invited to visit the Beaverbrook Hotel, which is quite simply an outstandingly luxurious new hotel near Leatherhead. It has a fascinating history, as the former home of Lord Beaverbrook, owner of the Daily Express and a minister under Churchill during WWII, and he lived and entertained there for over 50 years. The estate was bought in 2010 by its current owners, and the main house now has 18 beautiful rooms, all named after previous friends and guests of Lord Beaverbrook, including Sir Winston Churchill. Interestingly, his room is not that grand. It faces the rear of the house (now the front) and away from the glorious views, but he is said to have preferred the light for painting. He also had an escape route should it be required. The house is also home to their top restaurant, The Japanese Grill and the Parrot Bar, both taking in the magical view, as well as the restored private cinema, one of the very first in the country in its day. We were given a tour of the estate by a charming young man called Jack Greenall, a recent addition to the Beaverbrook and in fact a former jockey with two Grand Nationals to his name. Set in 400 acres, there is The Garden House, the former home of Beaverbrook’s aunt, which houses 11 further bedrooms and an Italian- themed and less expensive restaurant. Children are well catered for with tree houses, a play area and more. Being built is a new spa facility in addition to cottages to provide more accommodation. I cannot pretend that a stay at the Beaverbrook is anything less than eyewateringly expensive. But it is a majestic venue and offers a sense of occasion that is very hard to find in this area. The good news is that you do not have to be a millionaire to visit. They do what looked to me like a very fine afternoon tea, which starts at £35 per person. Very happily, the lovely owners have offered a competition for our readers to win tea for two with Champagne, so please do enter the usual way and experience the Beaverbrook for yourselves. I doubt you will be disappointed.

The Gardens at PoleSDen Lacey

We talk to Jamie Harris, the Head Gardener at Polesden Lacey What’s best in the gardens at Polesden Lacey in September? Although Polesden Lacey is mostly known as a summer garden, due to the fact that this is when Maggie Greville spent most of her time here, September is still a fantastic time to visit and there are some stunning plants throughout the formal gardens that are well worth checking out. A walk along the double Herbaceous Borders for instance will be rewarded with the likes of Salvias, Sedums, Asters and ornamental grasses still doing their thing. The roses in the Rose Garden will still be blooming until the first frosts while the outer borders here will also be studded with late season colour such as Cleome, Lespedeza and the stunning but spiky Colletia shrub. Elsewhere the back

borders of the Lavender and Iris Gardens will also be spilling over with Fuchsia and Japanese Anemone. Does it change throughout the month? Yes, as September creeps towards October and the onset of autumn, the focus starts to shift away from flowers and blooms towards barks, berries and leaves on our trees and shrubs. If you venture beyond the formal gardens into the pleasure grounds and areas like the Upper Sunk Garden or Preserve Copse you’ll be greeted by such delights as Viburnum fruits and Acer or Cotinus foliage. That’s not to say that there aren’t any flowers left of course. One of my favourite trees in the garden is often at its best when blooming away in September. Head to the Weeping Elm Lawn to the north east of the mansion and you spot a fine Tetradium daniellii in full flower. Also known as the Bee Bee Tree, you’ll probably hear it before you see it due to the mass of bees searching for the last few drops of nectar of the year!

Do you think gardeners (at our places and more generally) are thinking about the late summer/early autumn garden more than they used to, and planning for it more carefully these days - almost as a separate season? Yes, absolutely. The weather in September is often better than during the height of summer so there are still plenty of people who want to get out and enjoy our gardens. We’re pretty well-covered for summer here at Polesden Lacey and have also spent a lot of time and effort to increase our horticultural interest in spring and winter in recent years, with the Spring Borders and Winter Garden the obvious places to head to. The next focus is now on autumn. We started that this year by greatly improving our Salvia collection and also planting hundreds of late summer Nerine bulbs along the Herbaceous Borders and in our Cut Flower Garden. We also have big plans for autumnal foliage here with the addition of a new collection of trees on the perimeter of Preserve Copse in the pipeline, for example.

THE GARDENS AT POLESDEN LACEY for this time of year, each time we undertake a replanting programme. Our containers around the house or in Dairy Courtyard will also have plenty of September interest. Each year the planting is different but the use of grasses or perennials such as Penstemon or Pelargonium, especially when regularly deadheaded, will make sure the impact is still significant. Any tips for people at home – what to plant for September interest in the garden? Any of the coneflowers will do you proud at this time of the year. Whether that’s Echinacea, Helenium, Rudbeckia or the humble sunflower, they’re all perfect for extending the season and are also incredibly easy and cheap to grow from seed. Do you have a favourite plant for September? It would have to be the Salvia for me. There are so many beautiful colours and forms to choose from, making them versatile for any planting scheme. We’ve dramatically increased our collection this year. Along the Herbaceous Borders alone you’ll find the likes of the cool blue Salvia patens, the deep purple of ‘Amistad’ and the dusty pinks of ‘Love & Wishes’ to name but a few.

Do you have a favourite place in the garden at this time of year? (eg. somewhere to stop and admire views, or where the planting is lovely) The views across to Ranmore Common and the rest of the Polesden Lacey estate are always a real show stopper, and no more so than at the change of seasons fromsummer into autumn when the amazing palette of leaf colour starts to seep across the landscape. We recently cleared some new views that are not visible from anywhere else within the garden at Yew Walk, so that’s probably my favourite place to stop and enjoy the surroundings right now. To find it, simply cross the lower bridge near the Rock Garden or head down from the Old Kitchen Garden and you can’t miss it. How do you plan for colour in the garden in September, eg. do some summer plants continue or do you plant others specially? We try to make sure that we select plants which provide all year round interest or as close to that as possible. There are some plants which are naturally at their best towards the end of summer such as the Aster, Salvia, Echinacea or Rudbeckia, all of which can be found along our Herbaceous Borders at this time of year. Other plants have fantastic seed heads that persist after flowering, like Eryngiums or teasels. We make sure that our mixed borders have plenty of interest from these types of plants September 2018

Do you like autumn – could you describe your favourite first signs of autumn? I love autumn! The change from one season to the next is always fascinating but for me the time when the leaves start to turn is always so exciting. The mesmerising kaleidoscope of reds, yellows and oranges that nature throws up never ceases to enthral. The best place to head for autumn leaf colour here at Polesden would be the Croquet Lawn banks where our Smoke Bushes are a sight to behold and also the glades in Preserve Copse which are full of specimen trees. As autumn really gets going at Polesden Lacey, what are the best bits for you? Apart from all the other highlights and favourites mentioned above, if I had to recommend one tree that everyone must see here in autumn it’s the Liquidambar, or Sweet Gum tree. There are smaller examples in Preserve Copse but it’s the huge one on the Weeping Elm Lawn that really grabs your attention as it changes colour, looking almost as if it’s on fire. Make sure you join us here in late summer and early autumn to see this and all that the garden has to offer… Nick Meers

Simon Essex, founder of The Patio Black Spot Removal Company Ltd advises how to keep garden stonework looking beautiful all year round. What exactly are patio black spots and how do I know if I have them? “Patio Black Spots” begin life as tiny pollen size spores emanating from the leaves on trees. Wind blows clouds of these black lichen spores on the breeze and when it rains, they are deposited on your garden stonework. There they lay dormant for around 12-18 months before starting to feed off the minerals in the stone and germinate, appearing initially as tiny ink-like spots on your terrace, patios and pathways, then will appear on any stone, but always at the beginning of the third year. Will pressure washing get rid of them? Pressure washing merely accentuates them, as it removes the dirt, revealing the colour... and the “Patio Black Spots”! Over the two year germination period, the “Black Spots” grow into tiny sponge-like organisms, with micro fibrous roots that penetrate the surface of the stone, searching for more of the mineral; they anchor themselves and that’s why pressure washing doesn’t remove them. The tendency is to try even higher pressure, which only serves to damage the stone. So, what makes Patio Black Spot Remover different to other products? The Remover works immediately and the results are virtually instant! It contains an ingredient which penetrates the “Black spots”, kills the root and is simply washed away, revealing the spectacular colour that people paid so much to have laid in the first place. Most proprietary patio cleaners take days or weeks to work, contain pesticides and are formulated to remove green algae. But they won’t have any effect on the “Black spots”. Other, Heavy duty patio cleaners, including cement mortar removers, contain hydrochloric acid; the very acid that stains Sandstone orange and dissolves limestone, the effect of which is irreversible!

What if I don’t know what kind of stone I have? Simply contact our technical department and send a photo of your area. We will identify the stone and advise you personally. What happens next year? FUGGLE HOPS

Phil Kemp meets Bill Biddell for a tour of the estate’s hop garden and oast THE HAMPTON Estate at Seale near Farnham has been growing hops for hundreds of years and are the last commercial growers in Surrey. They specialise in Fuggle hops for beer production which are revered and used by brewers throughout the country, including The Hogs Back Brewery in nearby Tongham. In 2017 Hampton Fuggles were awarded the Wigan Cup by The Institute of Brewing and Distilling for the best sample of Fuggle hop in the UK.

acres under production. However, for a catalogue of conspiring reasons, following the First World War virtually all were out of production. I was intrigued to find out what has made Hampton fly in the face of such adversity and was invited to join Bill Biddell, who manages the estate with his wife Bridget, for a personal tour.

We met at the estate office where Bill started his introduction into their hop growing. “The Hampton Estate has always grown hops. Paul Thompson, who works for us, follows his father and grandfather who dried the hops that we’ve always grown in and around Puttenham. We have always grown just one variety which is the Fuggle. In the mid 70s and early 80s there were thirty or forty growers around Farnham, all pretty small, and which included the Bides and the Tices who were really well-known hop names. But a lot of people were persuaded to go into new style hops because at that point there was this stuff called lager that people started to drink – and no one was drinking real ale. And Fuggle goes into real ale.”

in. As well as hop production these include producing pedigree beef and wild venison, forestry, and hosting a wide range of activities including orienteering and gundog trials. The estate is also used as a favoured location for film studios, which has recently included providing major sets for the Robin Hood and Jack the Giant Killer films. Pointing to a photo of hop pickers hard at work on the bines strung over towering poles and wires on the slopes of the Hog’s Back I asked why they had always grown Fuggles. “Fuggle is very hard to grow because they are susceptible to wilt, and verticillium wilt is the killer of Fuggle,” Bill explained. “If you get wilt into your hop garden then you won’t be able to grow the hop. In Kent and Herefordshire where many hop gardens are right next door to each other, if one gets wilt within a year it’s on to the next one. So there are only seven or eight Fuggle growers in the country. The breweries we supply including the Hog’s Back Brewery have all been using Fuggle in their recipes for years and years and they don’t want to change. So other hop growers say that if you can grow Fuggle hops you are the luckiest growers in the country!” If you have travelled through Puttenham you will have undoubtedly seen the estate’s impressive hop garden alongside Seale Lane, with the tall ridge of the Hog’s Back behind. The hops enjoy the gault clay there that overlays the chalk of the North Downs. Only by standing alongside the many neat rows of healthy hop bines stretching into the distance can you get any real idea as to the scale of their operation. “The hop plants you can see here have been going for 45 to 50 years,” Bill explained. “They stay in the ground all year-round. Now we’ve got even more hops as we’ve extended the hop garden by a further 10 acres. That means we can now look at the rest of the older hops and decide if we should take a block out, because they might not be September 2018

performing well. Maybe just replant those. But we’ll see.” When I visited it was the end of the growing season. The hops were now full of essential oils and exuding their distinctive aroma - fully mature and ready to pick. If you’ve never seen a mature hop cone, which is the flowering part of the plant, I can assure you that you’d be quite entranced, not just by the aroma but also by the sheer geometric beauty of the perfectly formed pale green leaves that make up the flower. I asked Bill to provide a quick overview of a typical hop-producing year. “Let’s start on 1st January. There’s nothing on the garden. You can look right through the

THE HAMPTON ESTATE'S FUGGLE HOPS whole thing. All you’ve got are the skewers in the ground where each hop is. The next thing to do is cover the whole garden in dung to add some humus back to the soil. Then we will have a month and a half of stringing. Each plant needs two to four strings which are hung by working with long poles with a hook on the end fed a big ball of string. You walk up and down going from skewer at the bottom up to the wire and back down to the skewer... and on you go. It’s very labour intensive.” We paused by one of the hop bines to inspect the way the hops are strung and to admire the cones hanging from a bine that must have been in my estimation a good 16ft tall. “By April we start getting little hop shoots, with each hop plant having 40 to 50 shoots a few weeks later. But we only want two climbing the string so we train the two shoots we want and remove the rest. So now in early May you can almost watch them grow. They are like runner beans, although they go a bit faster and grow clockwise rather than runner beans climbing anticlockwise of course. By midsummer’s day the bine will reach the top wire and start to go over the top with little hops forming on laterals coming out from the main bines by mid-July. Come late August we’re ready to start picking, with harvesting by student labour in early September.” Of course there is much more involved than space here will allow, and especially in painstakingly inspecting for any sign of disease, which as well as wilt can include various strains of mildew. Hops are also threatened by aphids and two-spotted spider mites, requiring a constant watch. I recalled seeing photos back in the estate office of pickers working to cut the bines from the wires and then transporting these by trailer to the oast house. The hops then go into the gas-powered kilns which reduce the moisture content to preserve them and dries them, after which they are pressed and packed into huge bales ready for storage and supply to the breweries. New exhibition at Leith Hill Place explores the creative output of the Darwin family Whilst many people have heard of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, the creativity and achievements of his wider family are sometimes overlooked. Charles had ten children, seven of whom survived beyond childhood. Their children, mostly born after the great man died, included the poet Frances Cornford and the wood-engraver, painter and writer, Gwen Raverat. Ralph Vaughan Williams, their contemporary, was the grandson of Darwin’s sister Caroline and her husband (and brother-inlaw) Josiah Wedgwood the third.

The Surrey Game & Country Fair Phil Kemp learns all about this genuinely exciting rural life experience, taking place on Sunday 23rd September SUNDAY 23RD September sees the return of the popular Surrey Game & Country Fair in the grounds of Loseley Park near Guildford. The fair provides visitors with the opportunity to experience rural life and crafts in Surrey, not only to watch an exciting range of activities but also to get to meet rural specialists and take part in a range of activities. To find out more about the fair I was invited to visit the Surrey County Agricultural Society who organise the fair, as well as other annual events including the Surrey County Show. The society’s office in

Bramley is fittingly housed in attractively converted 18th century agricultural buildings. “We actually set up the fair in response to the Surrey County Show having to be cancelled because of the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001,” explained Liane Jarman. “There were a lot of extremely disappointed people, so we decided to try a smaller country fair instead to focus on rural life. It was at Loseley Park because we were already running our annual ploughing match there so it made sense to tag it on to that.” Having previously visited the Game and Country Fair I know from my own experience that it really does provide a stimulating introduction to all things rural, so I was keen to find out what they had planned for this year. “Our aim is to introduce people to rural activities they wouldn’t normally see in their everyday lives,” said Liane. “So we have a lot going on including displays of hunting, shooting, fishing, gundogs, falconry - and much, much more. There’s a lot of local and international food on offer, and you are also welcome to bring your own picnic if you prefer and sit on the lawn, which provides shade for a hot and sunny day.” The fair uses the expansive front lawn of the picturesque and historic Loseley House, a 16th century

THE SURREY GAME & COUNTRY FAIR The fair is by design totally family-friendly, with lots of opportunities for children to get involved. “We have a group of mediaeval reenactors at the fair who set up an encampment where you get to experience how people lived and see what they ate,” Tracey added. “Their village surrounds an archery range where everyone including kids can have a go.” I didn’t dare confess that in my visit last year it took me three attempts to even hit the large straw target! It was great fun trying though. And on finding out about rural crafts you won’t be disappointed. “We’ll have a coppice group demonstrating all sorts of wood skills. You’ll get to see demonstrations of everything from making wood shingles, walking sticks and pencils, to creating charcoal art and rustic wood disc art,” Tracey explained. “The Surrey Spinners and Weavers will be there too inspiring members of the public to learn new crafts.” “Families will just love the Shetland Pony Grand National racing in the arena,” said Liane, smiling. “They’re great fun and are raising money for the famous jockey Bob Champion’s Cancer Trust, and we are hoping that he will be joining us on the day. Alongside the dog agility demonstrations there will also be a have-a-go dog show where you can bring your own dog along and compete for rosettes and brilliant prizes too. Visitors who have trained or semi-trained gun dogs will also be able to join in on the dog scurry where they are encouraged to try and find and retrieve hidden dummies. They’re very entertaining to watch too, especially witnessing the frustrated owners of the less successful entrants!

“The gundog displays involve lots of different popular breeds including working cockers, springer spaniels, labradors, pointers and English and Irish setters. All of them have different skills and do different things, and after their shows people have the opportunity to meet the dogs too. You get to see the dogs in action hunting and retrieving,” Liane chipped in. “With the hounds you may get to meet their puppies, and the kids can go in with the hounds in the hunt demonstration, complete with huntsmen in full regalia with bugles going, which is brilliant to watch as it’s really hands on and the hounds love it as much as the kids!” September 2018

It was impossible for me to include here absolutely everything that the country fair is providing, including the chance to have a go at clay shooting, but you can of course find out everything on their website. For me, one of the must-see displays is being staged by The Sheep Show - who as well as demonstrating sheep shearing also has an act staged by his dancing sheep! All three of us dissolved into laughter on Liane’s parting comment: “I’m not kidding. He comes in with his sheep, all of whom he knows by name, and they actually dance to music! Classic Apple Tarte Tatin • FOOD & DRINK Apple Tarte Tatin Serves 2-3 Ingredients:

3 – 4 Pink Lady apples, 100g unsalted butter, 100g caster sugar, ¼ vanilla pod, a pinch of ground cinnamon, 2 sheets puff pastry, egg wash to brush.

Method:

1. Place soft butter in smaller sauce pot and spread evenly on bottom. 2. Add sugar, then sprinkle ground cinnamon & vanilla pod 3. Peel apples and cut into quarters. Using a small serrated knife, shape quartered apple into teardrop shapes and place them in prepared sauce pot. 4. Fill shaped apple all around in the pan and make sure they are all very tight. 5. Cook over low to medium heat until butter and sugar caramelised. Its ready to take off from heat once butter and sugar caramelised beautiful deep golden colour and butter becomes clear. 6. Set oven at 200C. Cool down caramelised apple and set aside. Prepare puff pastry while cooling down apple. Use same size sauce pot or same size plate to cut out 2 sheets of puff pastry. Brush a puff pastry disc with egg wash and put another pastry disc over it. 7. Cover cooked apple with layered puff pastry. Cook in the preheated oven for 17-22mins, until puff pastry is puffed up and cooked. Cool down slightly and turn it upside down using a plate. Place the hot apple tart tin on a plate and serve with the Vanilla Bean Chantilly Cream.

Vanilla Bean Chantilly Cream Ingredients:

1 cup double cream, ½ vanilla pod, 1 tbsp caster sugar, ½ tsp vanilla extract, sweet dessert wine to taste.

Method:

1. Split Vanilla beans into half with paring knife, and scrape vanilla beans from the pod. 2. Pour cream into mixing bowl, then add vanilla beans, vanilla extract, sugar into the bowl. 3. Whip cream mixture until fluffy texture. 4. Drizzle the wine into whipped cream and whisk until soft peak. 5. Keep it in refrigerator. Autumn beckons but don’t pack away your summer frocks just yet, advises fashion stylist, Kirstie Smillie I WRITE this on a scorcher of a day in July, but being a Leo and experiencing many a wet birthday, I know it can all change in August and then revert to being warm again by September, especially when the kids go back to school. So with this hot/cold dilemma (or hot/hot as I write), I am wondering what would be helpful to write about on these style pages? As we are nearing the end of the holiday season for many, focus moves to a new start - new schools, new job, new styles… September has that January vibe. Time to clear out, assess and prepare what will be packed away. Finding those transitional items for cooler mornings and evening; long sleeve t-shirts, jeans, and jackets are all a big ‘yes’. Autumn is my favourite season of all, as layers are definitely ‘in’, starting with a dress or two: • Elongate summer dresses by wearing long sleeve t-shirts under or over • Add an oversized jumper on top of longer printed dresses • Experiment the dress over trousers look, it’s easier than you think

The high street trends take direction from the main players in the fashion world, those who have shown their collections on the catwalks in February with a first timer, The Queen, watching the Richard Quinn show in full colour. And plenty of colour there will still be, with bold and bright or multi 70s inspired prints. If you enjoyed the colour clash of summer, you will love the winter wonderland to follow, which still include animal prints and velvets. There are plenty of cool classic options on hand too, so choose your own direction but enjoy the variations on offer. Scented Daffodils • GARDENING

With Beth Otway ‘Golden Dawn’, Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus, and Narcissus ‘Fragrant Breeze’. Narcissus ‘Fragrant Breeze’ is a surprising daffodil, this cultivar has a very powerful fragrance. When you encounter this flower it is just like smelling a rose, while Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus produces a musky scent, which is akin to the fragrance of stocks or Matthiola flowers. Narcissus ‘Golden Dawn’ was a top performing plant in my 2017 Scented Daffodil Trial, this really is a super daffodil that produces a sweet, fruity scent, which is rather like the scent produced by Hyacinths.

FOR ME, deliciously scented flowers are a delightfully uplifting feature of the garden. A beautiful moment spent enjoying garden flowers and their fragrances is utter bliss! Time spent with delectably fragrant flowers eases life’s worries and stresses, brings joy to our day and makes everything feel better. I have a particular fondness for scented daffodils or Narcissus. Narcissus is the botanical name for this genus, while daffodil is the common name we use, but both names refer to the same group of plants.

As well as studying the daffodils’ fragrances, I was also looking to find top performing daffodils, plants that produced a large number of flowering stems and flowers, that flowered for a long period. Of the daffodils in my 2018 Scented Daffodil Trial, Narcissus ‘Moonlight Sensation’ produced the most flowers: 50 bulbs of this cultivar produced 640 flowers! Narcissus ‘Sunlight Sensation’ produced the most flowering stems: 50 bulbs of this cultivar produced 168 flowering stems. Narcissus ‘Lancaster’ held the record for the longest flowering period, the flowers produced by these bulbs bloomed for 40 days. This is the perfect time to plant daffodils in your gardens, window boxes, and containers. I hope that the results of my trials will help you to discover a new favourite daffodil that will bring joy to you in your spring garden.

Earlier this year, I ran two scented daffodil trials. My aim was to discover top performing, floriferous daffodil cultivars that were beautifully fragrant and performed well when grown in containers, or in garden beds and borders. All of the daffodils that I chose for my trials were selected as they were described as being fragrant. Sadly, once the daffodils flowered, I was unable to detect any perfume at all from a number of the trialled daffodil cultivars, while some cultivars produced only a very light scent. Thankfully, a number of my trialled daffodil cultivars did produce absolutely fabulous fragrances that were powerful and delicious. Just thinking about these deliciously scented daffodils makes me smile, I am so looking forward to seeing these daffodils and their flowers in the springtime. My favourite fragrant daffodils that featured in my 2018 Daffodil Trials were: Narcissus

Drip water your plants with a porous hose or leaky pipe product (shown below, available from garden stores and online retailers). A porous hose weeps water along its whole length, so weave it around your plants to get water where it is most needed. Adding a good layer of mulch (around 8cm) to your borders will help retain water and reduce weed growth too. A crispy brown lawn will recover fairly rapidly with renewed rainfall. In the meantime, raise the height of the cut on your mower to avoid weakening the grasses and leave the clippings on the lawn as this will slow down water evaporation. Unsurprisingly, fruit trees have produced a bumper crop this year. Plan ahead and you could also be enjoying the fruits of your labour next Summer. Buy good quality container-grown trees which look healthy and show no sign of disease and plant them in the Autumn or Winter. Prune any existing fruit trees before the end of the Summer to enhance circulation and promote new season growth. Keep a photographic record of your trees and borders, so you can prune, divide and reposition plants in the Winter ready to create a new look when your garden bounces back to life in the Spring. THE JAPANESE GRILL, BEAVERBROOK

I TRY and avoid superlatives most of the time, but occasionally they are necessary. Our meal at the Japanese Grill at the Beaverbrook near Leatherhead warrants quite a few. Before I start with the plaudits, I must kick off by admitting that this is an expensive restaurant. We are possibly talking bucket list, certainly major celebration. The Beaverbrook is the former home of Sir Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, erstwhile owner of the Daily Express and minister of aircraft production under Churchill in WWII. Originally called Cherkley Court, it was bought by Beaverbrook in 1910 and he lived there for half a century. After the death of Lady Beaverbrook in 1994, it was owned by the Beaverbook Foundation until they sold it to its present owners in 2010, who have restored it beautifully and turned it into a fabulous hotel and private golf club. A long driveway leads you past fields, a few golf holes, two gated entrances and The Garden House, which accommodated Beaverbrook’s aunt before becoming an Italian-themed restaurant with rooms. Finally you arrive at The House, to be greeted by wonderfully friendly staff. The house is eclectic in style, with Tuscan columns and French-style mansard roofs. The entrance is what used to be the rear entrance, which frees up the front to make the most of some quite splendid views towards the North Downs. We came in early August, along with the return of the sunshine. Our table was outside, off the dining room, taking in the aforementioned vista. The menu offers much choice, including tempura, sushi and sashimi. We opted for the more expensive of the two chef’s selections, chosen mainly for the inclusion of Wagyu beef amongst the 10 dishes. At £90 per person, this is serious money. Spicy edamame got us all started before a salmon taco with lovely flying fish roe, very pretty and enjoyable. Then came crispy rice, with a tuna

tartare. Who would imagine fried squares of rice could be so wonderful? Light and crisp, terrific with the tuna. To follow, Yellow Tail tiradito with yuzu foam, so fresh, so soft and flavoursome, served along side the Beaverbrook salad, a work of art with edible flowers, avocado and crunchy shallots. And then. The Beaverbrook special Nigiri. Nigiri is a type of sushi and these five were all out of this world. Sea bass with crispy ants (yes, and from Kent, slightly sour), fatty tuna with truffle, Wagyu beef, Loch Duart salmon, slightly smoked, and wild native eel, a touch charred. All exceptional. Grilled Koji Halibut followed, with mushrooms and miso sauce, delicate yet meaty. Then came the Wagyu beef and boy it did not disappoint. The flavour of this meat was incredible, its tenderness quite amazing, matched perfectly with a Hoba Miso sticky sauce. This was served alongside cabbage with truffle with a Sake butter. Who knew it could taste this good? Regular readers will know that desserts are not usually my favourite, but I have started making exceptions. A green basil sorbet was intense, zingy, served with a lemonade foam that tasted fizzy. Then a smoked chocolate and uisuki cream, with its warming whisky flavour, and a malt mandarin sorbet. A terrific end. When I read that the main restaurant in this quintessentially English hotel was Japanese themed, I was a little surprised but now I understand. The symphonies of flavour, the cleverness of the cooking, the delicate touches and the sheer quality make this a destination dining experience, one that I cannot imagine finding outside of the world’s capital cities. Sheepleas, Lovelace Bridges, East Horsley South of East Horsley there is a large hilly forested area criss-crossed by paths many of which are known only to locals. Hidden in the woods are many surprises, especially the stone bridges built in the 1800s by the Earl of Lovelace to transport his timber wagons. This walk visits three of these bridges and the sites of two “lost” bridges, using several rare paths. This is dog friendly with no stiles. Taken with permission from www.fancyfreewalks.org.

• THE WALK 1. From the Sheepleas Shere Road car park, take the path between stumps beside a noticeboard. In 150m, where you see a T-junction with two fingerposts ahead, fork right and veer right on a bridleway. In just 20m you come to a junction with a 2-way signpost pointing forward and back to two car parks. Ignore both directions and instead turn left on a side path. Another path quickly joins from the left. Almost immediately, you come to a fork. Take the left fork, thus staying on the main path. In 30m you go past a post saying self-guided trail on the other side. In 100m you reach a 3-way fingerpost: veer right here on a public bridleway. 2. In 30m you come to a Y-junction: fork right here uphill on a flinty path. In 150m or so, you come to a major crossing track with a 4-way fingerpost: go right and immediately left, thereby keeping your direction. Your path crosses an open area. Ignore minor paths left and right to reach another fingerpost. Keep straight ahead over an oblique crossing path, in the direction of the bridleway, passing the fingerpost on your left. Your path goes for some distance downhill under a tall canopy of various trees. Finally it comes down to the Green Dene road, opposite its junction with Honeysuckle Bottom. 3. Cross straight over, a fraction right, to a small signpost and footpath left, just after High Hazels. Follow the path between gardens and straight on into woodland. Your path goes under one of the Earl of Lovelace’s famous stone bridges. This one is Raven Arch, a single-parapet bridge. Your path 7

shortly comes up to a major junction of tracks. Take the wide forestry track very sharp left, almost doubling back. The track gently rises and curves right, ever tighter, until it has come almost halfcircle. As it begins to flatten out, where you see it curving left about 50m ahead, look for a marker post on your left with a white badge indicating Lovelace Bridges Trail. Turn left here on a much narrower path and follow it through rhododendrons. It soon leads you over the largest of the Lovelace bridges, the Dorking Arch, with the Crocknorth Road below. 4. On the other side, continue ahead on a path into woods. In 50m, your path goes over two crossing paths and enters beechwoods with a green meadow visible on the right through cypresses. Finally, your path comes to a bank, just after the site of one of the lost bridges, Oak Hangers, as indicated by a plaque on your left. Go down the bank and turn left on a sunken path. In 30m, you reach a large sign for Oldlands and a junction of paths. Go straight ahead, ignoring a forestry track left, and in 20m, at a marker post, take the right fork, a fraction uphill, marked with a yellow badge on a tree on your left marked Horsley Jubilee Trail. In 150m, your path forks: take the left-hand fork the narrower option, marked by a blue arrow. Your path runs gently downhill under beeches and soon becomes a splendid avenue of yew trees. You arrive at a junction with some oblique crossing paths: keep dead straight on along a good path, soon going over another Lovelace bridge, Stony Dene. 5. Continue over the bridge for another 100m where you meet an oblique, very obvious, crossing path. Fork left onto the crossing path. In 500m, in a slight dip in the path, you pass the site of another lost Lovelace bridge, Pine Grove. Some of the brickwork can still be seen. Your path continues by a wire fence, eventually meets another footpath from the left and runs beside a house to reach the main A246 Guildford Road. Cross this road carefully, turn right for 20m and quickly left on Dirtham Lane/Calvert Road. 6. Follow the lane beside the old flint wall of Effingham Lodge on your left and bungalows on your right. By Lusty Glaze, take the left fork, staying next to the wall, on the aptly-named Dirtham Lane. You pass the entrance to Dell Farm, after which the surface is rougher. Ignore a yellow badge soon on your right for the Horsley Jubilee Trail, although on another day this is well worth exploring. The crumbling flint wall is now a ruin in parts. You come to a 3-way junction at a fingerpost. Keep straight on, as for East Horsley, avoiding the path right for

Effingham, still beside the flint wall. On your right is Great Ridings Wood. At the corner of the wall, at another fingerpost, turn left for East Horsley. At a marker post, keep straight on by a fence, ignoring a footpath on the right. Finally your path goes by a small metal gate and under a stone bridge (not a Lovelace bridge, though built in the same spirit by the owners of Innisfree). 7. Ignore a footpath on your right and continue past tennis courts. The lake on your left is Pennymead as you go over a small bridge to join a tarmac lane. You reach a crossroads with a private road, Pine Walk, on your left. There is an interesting alternative route here through Horsley Park and past Horsley Towers. This is a private park, hotel and venue but this route is regularly used by dog walkers, young people and local families as the site is comfortable towards casual visitors. To use this route, turn left on this private residential road, leading you to a large wooden gate which is the rear entrance to the park; follow this path, zigzagging past Horsley Towers, with its pond and garden and leave by the main entrance, zigzagging again, to the road near the church. 8. Turn left, past the Church of St Martin, which is worth visiting and where you can sometimes have a guide and even tea. At the junction with the main road, on the left is Guildford Lodge and, on the right, the local pub, the ‘Duke of Wellington’. Turn right on the main A246 road using the footway. In 300m, just by a welcome sign for West Horsley, turn left onto a signposted bridleway with a noticeboard about Sheepleas. Follow this wide path for about 700m inside a wide band of trees with houses or fields on each side. You pass a small untidy timber yard on your left and your path enters thicker woodland. Avoid all side branches, ignoring a signposted horse path, until, 200m from the timber yard, you meet two fingerposts. At the second fingerpost, fork right for Shere Road Car Park. 9. This path takes you through a wooden barrier and along a path into a long green valley. Shortly, opposite a marker post, ignore a path that forks right up the side of the valley (although it also leads to the car park) and continue along the bottom of the valley. The path gradually rises and curves right, getting steeper. It leads into a band of trees where you find a large 3-way fingerpost. Keep straight ahead in the direction of the Shere Road Car Park, immediately reaching a grassy space with two sets of picnic tables. Fork right here between the picnic tables, across the middle of the grassy space. At the far side, join a wide path (the path you ignored above) that runs along the right-hand side of the grassy area. Shortly you reach two fingerposts close together. Keep straight ahead in the direction of Shere Road Car Park. Quickly take the right fork, then the left fork, to reach the car park where the walk began.

Rotary in Mole Valley • PROFILE As well as raising money themselves, many Mole Valley Rotary projects involve the clubs and their members organising events which enable other local charities and organisations to raise awareness of, and funds for, their own activities. These range from Ashtead Village Day, which now includes stalls from over 100 worthy causes as well as providing thousands of local residents with a memorable day out, to a number of sponsored events, including a 10k run across Headley Heath and a 'swimarathon' at Dorking Sports Centre, enabling participants to raise funds for their own preferred charities. Mole Valley Rotary presidents

ON 23RD February 1905, Paul Harris, a 36-yearold attorney from Chicago, convened a meeting with three of his business associates to form a professional group of local businessmen from a variety of vocations, with the aim of supporting their local community. And so the world’s first ‘service club’, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was born. Within a matter of months, the club performed one of its first acts of community service, working with local civic organisations to install ‘public comfort stations’ (or public toilets, as we would now call them) around the city, to help improve sanitation.

At an international level, Rotary continues to work closely with many of the well-known international aid agencies to provide hands-on disaster relief, through its global network of members, and in conjunction with its own range of specialist disaster relief equipment, such as ShelterBox and AquaBox. The five Mole Valley clubs also work hard each year to raise funds for 'End Polio Now', Rotary's global polio eradication campaign, which, since being launched in 1985, has succeeded in eliminating polio from all but two countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan) throughout the world.

Over a century later, Rotary International is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the world, with over 1.25 million members, male and female, aged 18 to 80+, in around 35,000 clubs in over 200 countries, all working to support their communities, locally, nationally and internationally. Throughout Mole Valley, around 150 Rotarians from the five Rotary Clubs within the area, Ashtead, Bookham & Horsley, Dorking, Dorking Deepdene and Leatherhead, meet regularly to arrange a variety of social, fundraising and community service activities. Between them, the five clubs raise on average around £100,000 each year, the majority of which is used to support a wide range of local, national and international charities and other voluntary organisations.

New Exhibition at Leith Hill Place Fridays to Sundays from 7th September to 21st October 11am-5pm Whilst many people have heard of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin, the creativity and achievements of his wider family are sometimes overlooked. Charles had ten children, seven of whom survived beyond childhood. Their children, mostly born after the great man died, included the poet Frances Cornford and the wood-engraver, painter and writer, Gwen Raverat. Ralph Vaughan Williams, their contemporary, was the grandson of Darwin’s sister Caroline and her husband (and brother-in-law) Josiah Wedgwood the third. This new exhibition at Leith Hill Place will showcase the work of these three artists, linking their work through music, poetry and art. Admission charges apply. Free for National Trust members. Surrey Cycle Challenge Sunday 9th September The challenge is encouraging cyclists to get on their bikes to raise money for children with brain injury and neurodisability. Leatherhead Community Association After such a long, hot dry summer it will be good (at the time of writing) to welcome cooler days and nights! There are the many interesting talks, visits and activities that will take place in the Institute over the autumn but too many to list! Don’t forget there is table tennis and snooker on Monday afternoons, two book clubs on Thursdays, and on Fridays you can play Scrabble or join in with the friendly Social Bridge Group which plays for two hours from 2pm also on a Friday. Rosanna and Janet have planned the Autumn visits going to Chiswick House in September, Freemasons Hall London in October, and Nutcracker at Guildford in November. Remember that there are rooms for hire in the Institute, either for a single event or a course of classes, but for full information on everything that happens in the Institute please call in where you can pick up the new newsletter which gives you all the information on the different programmes that will be running. Membership of the Institute is only £5 a year and most of the activities are free to members, but non-members are always welcome for a small charge. There is nearly always a cup of coffee or tea available in the library which is open every morning where you can borrow DVD’s as well as books.
