SUMMER WAS GREAT!!! A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song. --Maya Angelou
The McLeod Lake Youth enjoyed a hot summer. This Summer we enjoyed camping at the band hall, camping at the historic site, playing in the water, We attended a baseball camp and made a trip to see the WAC Bennett Dam. The Youth also participated in the community Youth Canoe Camp, where they practiced canoeing and first aid. Some of the youth and their family joined in the McLeod’s Lake canoe race with their parents. The Youth Summer employment program employed 5 youth. They assisted with the activities at the AGA,

They got to tie dye tshirts, attend a mini fair and life jackets (supported by Duz Cho) the Youth floated down the Pack River to the pumping station where they
were picked up by Rocky Mountain Trench adventures river boat. S h a y l a a n d Te s s a participated in the science camp at UNBC and will be submitting a report of all their fun. Youth participated in the Stay in School Program that funded a trip to Bonaparte Pow Wow and horse back riding at Hat Creek Ranch.
Good luck to the Youth as they embark on their new school adventures this year. Summer’s out for SCHOOL.

The Shack by William P. Young I got this book about a year ago by a friend friends parents and I’m going to tell you that I’ve always been curious about Christianity. So that being said I’ll start telling you about this book. Mackenzie Allen Philips is in his mid 50’s and has lived long enough to know a thing or two about life, however the one thing that every parent does not want to happen, happened to him just over four years ago and that was his little Missy being abducted while they were on vacation. This event ended up leading a search for the girl to a little shack in the middle of nowhere, where they found evidence of a brutal murder, however they could not find the body, only a torn red dress that she had been wearing the day she went missing and some blood on the floor by the fire place.
This ultimately was the beginning of a fall out with God for Mack and sent him spiraling into what he describes as “the great sadness” and often fell into this state whenever he thought about his daughter Missy. After four years Mackenzie finds a note one cold wintery morning inviting him back to The Shack, apparently by God. However Mack had his suspicions that this maybe the killer only wanting him or themselves. Against better judgement Mack goes back to the shack not knowing what would come of this...... As you begin to read the book further on you are captivated in a world where “tragedy confronts eternity” in an age old question, “does God really exist?”. You’ll want to share this book with everyone! Untill next month, Nathan Findlay

Housing and Public Works 2009
would just like to say Hello to all of our Band Members,
near and far! A little bit about myself and the role I play for the McLeod Lake Indian Band: I am Tania, a mother of a beautiful daughter, Rhiannon Raine Sander. She is the love of my life, and watching her grow, and develop each day is a wonderful experience that I cherish! She is almost 20 months old, wow, how the time flies. As for myself, I started working as the Accounts Payable Clerk on April 1st, 2009, and before that I was the Finance Clerk from November until March 2009. I have a lot of experience working with the band and its’ entities, especially in the accounting field. I enjoy working with the Finance Team here, especially learning from each and every one of the Ladies on our side of the band office. I have training in Business Administration in the Accounting and Finance area. I am also the Director of the ‘Quilting Hotties’; which is a local club with Josie, Anita, Georgina, Bobbi, Alecia, Sharon, Corinna, Stephanie, Kandy and Marc participating from time to time. Hopefully I haven’t forgotten anyone. We try to hold our monthly Bingos to raise funds, and it is the last Friday of each month, from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm. We have also had people come from as far as Burns Lake and Tumbler Ridge to win at our bingos’! If you would like to donate any items, or just come out and have some fun, please join us at the band hall. So far we have used our money to support our Bingos with a gaming license, bingo cards, quilting and crafting supplies, and merchandise prizes for our bingos. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 1-888-822-1142 ext 831, or on my direct line at (250) 750-6831
This summer has been a very busy time for both Geraldine (Housing) and Myself (Public works). The main thrust this year is to get the projects to completion under the INAC and CMHC intiative that Bob and Geraldine have been working very hard toward. This work is now out to tender and will require local workers to see the job through. Public Works is finally see a light at the end of the tunnel in regard to the GUDI Ground Water Under The Influence of Surface Water study which has been going on for a couple years now. The end of the study will allow our engineering firm Radloff and Associates to move ahead with proposals for an improved water delivery system for the village. Our ACRS Asset Conditioning Reporting System study was also completed Aug. 19. This study was done on behalf of INAC by Radloff and Associates. This study covered public buildings, roads, band assets and water structures. We are in pretty good shape overall but a lot of work still has to be done. Aug. 12/09 I was promoted to Public Works Manager from Maintenance Supervisor. I would like to thank Band Manager Adele Chingee for the note of confidence in giving me this very responsible position. I look forward to the new challenges this position will bring particularily obtaining the capitol required to improve the lives of all the great people of this community. Sincerely, Guy Rocheleau Public Works Manager

Berry good!! Another berry season is coming to pass and the community berry pickers will soon be filling those empty jars with the tastiest berries from the area. Huckleberry, Blueberry, Raspberry and Saskatoon; McLeod Lake is rich with al those berries and the word is out. We had pickers from Mackenzie to Prince George come out and enjoy friends, conversations, quietness or the pure satisfaction of it. Tania at the 2009 AGA

Chief ’s Update I hope everyone who attended this year’s AGA had a great time. It has been a tough year with many challenges, such as, the worldwide recession and Trust Deficit, but we have lots positive opportunities to look forward to as we move ahead. On August, 04, 2009 McLeod Indian Band hired Adele Chingee as Band Manger. Adele Chingee is a Band Member and has served the Band since 2000. Adele has a great knowledge of Band operations and an enthusiastic desire to make positive changes to improve our support and services to all Band Members. Since Adele has agreed to take on the position of Band Manger she has been very proactive in dealing with the many issues the Band has in human resources, policy development, housing and communications. As the world economy slowly improves, McLeod Lake Indian Band businesses are gradually receiving more contracts and job opportunities. For instance, Duz Cho Logging is hauling wood for Canfor to the mill in Mackenzie now that it is back in operation. There are also signs that the Oil and Gas sector is starting to pick up as Duz Cho Construction is landing more contracts on lease and road construction. In the mining sector, MLIB has just been notified on September 01, 2009 that First Coal Corporation has been awarded their bulk sample permit for a 50,000 tonne program. First Coal is still waiting on a Waste Water Discharge and Forest Cutting Permit. It is expected that First Coal will have these permits by
mid October and start the site preparation for the Bulk sample shortly after. Mining experts Ledcor MCI will subcontract Duz Cho Construction as they have been awarded the contract for the Bulk Sample site preparation. The approval of First Coal Corporation permits will mean approximately 5.5 million dollars in revenue for Ledcor and Duz Cho Construction by the end of December. The increase in business activity is positive for MLIB because it will lead to job opportunities for Members and revenues for the Band, which can be used to fund services in health, education, culture, or many of our other programs and services. As we move towards winter MLIB will be scheduling consultation meetings in McLeod Lake, Prince George and Vancouver to provide the Members with the opportunity to discuss and share your thoughts and concerns on Band Business, BC Hydro’s Proposed Site “C “Dam, Revenue Sharing with the Province, and business partnerships that we want to develop to strategically position MLIB so we can take advantage of the growing economy and many of the large projects that the Province is undertaking. Some of the larger projects include Mt Milligan Copper and Gold Mine, Hydro’s Site “C” Dam and the Enbridge Gateway Pipeline. These projects are directly in the Traditional Territory of The McLeod Lake Indian Band and will have both positive and negative aspects. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated, on these or any other matters.
McLeod Lake Indian Band is also working on our new and improved website MLIB.ca which will provide Band Members with easier access to current events and other related issues. The newsletter will also be available on the website and can be printed individually at a reduced cost to MLIB. If you do not have computer access please call the Band Hall at 1-888-822-1143 and a hard copy of the newsletter will be mailed. Launch date is expected on or before September 11, 2009 www.mlib.ca
On a personal note, I am eager to get out in our Territory and hunt for moose and elk; the freezer is getting a little bare. I have not had as much free time as I use to and am working towards a little more balance with family, work, and personal development. On September 03, my daughter will be turning 4 years old, time passes so quickly, it seems like it was only yesterday we were changing her diapers. Owen, my son is now 18 months and thinks he is a mountain climber; his mission in life right now is to climb anything and everything. Logan our eldest will be 10 in October and is going to have his birthday party at Predator Paint Ball. My partner Arlene has been busy working in finalizing the sale on our duplex in order to buy a house, so the kids have their own bedroom. Currently, Logan and Erica are sharing a room and like many First Nations they often have territorial disputes and arguments over who has exclusive rights and title over their room. The extra space will be welcomed! I look forward to meeting with all Members in the next few months and hope the new website provides you with the information you need and keep everyone up to date on Band Business. The website will include a link for your comments on how to improve the website or any other suggestions. To all the children, youth and other members heading back to school, good luck! Happy Hunting to our hunters and have a safe, happy and healthy Fall to all members and your families. Sincerely,
Arlene & Owen at Fort George Park, Logan, Owen & Erica at home and Owen enjoying his ice cream at grandpa’s

BC Hydro Site “C” Project Hi Everyone, I am Jennifer Weightman, the Project Coordinator for the BC Hydro Site “C” project. The Site “C” project is a proposed hydro electric dam on the Peace River southwest of Fort St John. The project is currently in stage 2 of 5 which is Community Consultation. I have put together a work plan that includes community meetings in McLeod Lake as well as Vancouver, site visits to both the WAC Bennett Dam and the proposed Site “C” area. I ask that all members of the McLeod Lake Indian Band become involved in the consultation process to ensure that all questions and concerns can be addressed. The first community meeting will be held in McLeod Lake on September 15th in the gym at noon. Lunch will be offered as well as door prizes and a presentation from BC Hydro. The presentation will cover some environmental issues such as wildlife and flooding areas as well as job opportunities and contracts. Update by Margie Alec employment and training
Hello Everyone, First of all, I would like to congratulate Richard Jackson, an MLIB member for receiving his Level C in Welding. Richard Jackson from Prince George first went to Fort St. John to the United Association of Plumbing and Pipefitters, UA 170 Area Training in 2006/2007 held by McLeod Lake Indian Band. Richard was one of the six selected participants to take this course and pass with 100% participation. He is currently taking time to be with his children whom lives in Prince George with his common-law spouse, Naomi. He has sacrificed many long hours away to take his training and apprenticeship to become a Welder. Secondly, Michael Jason Solonas is one of our members that was selected to take the Level 3 First Aid Training and is now being trained in house by Joanne of Polar Medical Services. Joanne is very impressed by Michaels’ drive to getting his field experience. Thirdly, Georgina Chingee, Anita Vallee and Scott Sanders are presently finishing up their Culinary Arts program in Mackenzie, BC and are scheduled to graduate on September 25, 2009. Georgina and Anita have been passing this course with very good marks and will be a valuable asset in times to come. Last but not least, Penny Inyallie is presently enrolled with the Academy of Learning in Prince George. Penny is taking her Marketing Administrative Assistance Program and is close to completing this training. CONGRATULATIONS from the Education/Employment and Training Department to all of you for your time and dedication in your training. There are a few developments that I would like to share with the membership; o Duz Cho Construction is now accepting resumes for a Ledcor Project. Band members need to get their resumes into Duz Cho Construction. We also need to inform the applicants that there will be daily drug and alcohol testing. If they fail even once, they are terminated. o I am taking resumes for a project coming up at the Canfor mill in Mackenzie by Deltech. They will be installing a Bio Energy project which will be tentatively scheduled to go by end of September or early October. I will be letting members know of the progress as it is corresponded to me. o The Northwest Community College is taking names for a Heavy Duty Equipment Operators Training. You can call them for more information at 1-877-277-2288 extension 5877 for Tanya Reedy. Please note, that this program is not fully funded, participants are to seek outside funding. A word from.. Adele Chingee, Band Manager
I have accepted the position to be the Band Manager for MLIB with great enthusiasm. The decision did not come very easy for me to leave ‘my beloved’ lands and resources position. I enjoyed the years and all the training which I received under land management. My energy and focus was to consider and provide fair treatment for all of the benefit of the membership, because we all have a stake in our lands, resources and environment. The university and professional training enabled me to become certified in lands, resources and environmental management. My professional training also opened up doors for me and that I could transfer to a more senior position. Again, I would like to focus on the membership as a whole and ensure that our members are provided with the services they require in fair, equitable and timely manner. Along with the senior managers from our team we will be reviewing MLIB’s current policies and updating them to make them current. To ensure we implement these policies is essential, which will provide our administration team with guidance, direction and authority. We are clearly working on separating governance and administration, and we thank Chief Derek Orr for his full support on this. We’re moving towards more team efforts versus individualisms, we do this by scheduling regular staff and senior manager meetings. These meetings are also a forum for ‘debriefing’ session for our staff, which assists us to work on the problem areas. I have a full schedule on a daily basis, but I’m very approachable and willing to take a few minutes to listen to membership, should you have any concerns that our administration can assist you with. We want to be very proactive versus being reactive, so we look forward to the positive changes in the way we’re doing business in administration. Mussi Cho, Adele Chingee
The Honourable Madame Justice Rose Toodick Boyko, Law and Justice It's a long way from a trapline in Northern British Columbia to a respected position on a Canadian judge's bench - but Rose Toodick Boyko has excelled at every step along the way. She was the first Aboriginal woman to be appointed to a superior court in Canada when made a Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice (General Division) in 1994. She now presides over criminal and civil trials and hears lower court appeals. Before that, she served at the highest levels of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and has been a shining star in Canada's public service since the early 1980s. A Tsek'Ehne First Nation member, Justice Boyko completed high school in Prince George, B.C. and then Montreal before joining the nursing profession, becoming among the first of a generation of nurses destined to forever positively impact First Nations peoples. Her work took her to nursing stations in remote Cree communities around James Bay. From there, she was thrown into the thick of it, serving in critical care areas in Kingston General Hospital. Justice Boyko has long been active in the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada. After that, she set her sights upon the law, receiving a B.A. from one of Canada's greatest universities, Queen's, and then earning her law degree at the same institution three years later. Her law school dean has praised her constant efforts at advancing the interests of Aboriginal law students and reaching out to Aboriginal law graduates. She's never too busy to meet with students, serving as both a role model and mentor. The Honourable Madame Justice Rose Toodick Boyko was a 1999 National Aboriginal Achievement Award recipient in the Law and Justice category.

Back to school...... Danache’a everyone! What a great summer McLeod Lake has had this year, lots of sunny days!!! Well it’s that time of year; students are back to school… Leaves are starting to turn yellow, chillier evenings. AGA Update This year we held our 9th Annual General Assembly and 21st Education Celebration on August 6th &7th, 2009 here in McLeod Lake, BC.
