IT Associations in India It is very much to the point to underline the fact that IT Associations have come a long way in playing a significant role in the uplift of the channel community in India. The contribution made by various Associations formed across the length and breadth of the country can be ascertained from the role they have played right from the evolution of the channel ecosystem to that of keeping a tab on the conduct of the channel partners for the betterment of the Indian IT industry. More than 25,000 resellers in the emerging Metros, Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III cities in India are today an established supply chain business across the country and deal with the hardware and software products. Many of these resellers qualify as Value-added resellers (VARs) wherein they add features or services to the existing products, then resell them as integrated products or complete turnkey solutions. According to one estimate, Indian Information technology market would grow to $44.8 billion in 2014. Given the gigantic landscape, IT Associations have a major role and in fact gone to the extent of taking a call against partners who have engaged in frivolous practices. Examples are galore that several IT associations have done a commendable job in exceeding the expectations and taking up activities which place them on a pedestal high in public eye. In an attempt to recognize their role, VARINDIA lists some of the leading Associations from across different states, who have been in the market for quite some time and delivering instant results.

Telecom Service Providers

Telecommunication has emerged as a major engine of economic and social developments in India. The opening of the telecom industry coupled with the ubiquitous low-cost devices, affordable services and sharp reduction in tariff and unprecedented increase in teledensity are the contributory factors in scripting a telecom revolution in India. A fast adoption of telecom technology has all the potential of overcoming developmental challenges in various sectors of social and economic life, including health, education, employment generation, financial inclusion and so on. Besides contributing about 3% to India’s GDP, Telecommunications, along with Information Technology, has greatly contributed to the acceleration of the economic and social sectors in the country. Today, again smartphones are no longer a luxury good. India is world’s fastest-growing smartphone market and this growth has been mainly driven by the cellular segment (mobile phones). 968 million smartphone device units were sold in 2013 out of a total of 1.8 billion mobiles sold. The Indian the PC industry never really took off. “The graph is flat since 2011. Tablet is slightly better but not much. Compared to that smartphones adoption rate is exponential, that is 53.6% of overall mobile phone sales for the year. What is most exciting for Indian start-up ecosystem is that with a 166.8 percent increase in the fourth quarter of 2013, India exhibited the highest smartphone sales growth. The Indian mobile subscriber base now contributes to over 13% of the world mobile subscriptions of 6.5 billion. Smartphone is fast becoming the primary means to connect to the internet and conduct transactions of various kinds and also running a business. This means it is no longer considered a discretionary spend but an absolute necessity. As businesses are in the process of allowing employees to bring their personally owned computers, smartphones and tablets into the workplace and access corporate applications, the popularity of BYOD is increasing fast. In the coming years, the Indian telecom market is projected to move from the SMS-based services to Internet and Application-based services. The Indian Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS) is currently valued at over US$5 billion and expected to cross over US$6 billion by the end of 2013. As consumers continue to drive the adoption of tablets, the market for mobile computing solutions has never been better. Indian mobile subscriber base now contributes to over 13% of the world mobile subscriptions of 6.5 billion. Besides, the government has set ambitious targets of 100% rural teledensity and 600 million broadband connections by 2020. Hence brighter times lie ahead for the sector whose growth will be fuelled by increased access to services which will be gaining greater momentum, thanks to the launch of newer telecom technologies like BWA and LTE, changing consumer behaviour and better devices. As improved broadband capacity helps to overcome network bottlenecks, cloud-based offerings from telecom operators and ICT providers will continue to grow. To spur this phase of growth of the sector, Government has already rolled out a national optical fibre network project called NOFN whereby an internet connection and one Wi-Fi hotspot in each of the 2.5 lakh gram panchayats spread across the country will be provided.

Distributors & VADS With an ever-increasing significance of distributors, the country is up with tremendous potential from them. Undoubtedly, they are the real heroes (through mostly unsung) of the industry and distributors provide customers the latest and most relevant technology solutions and act as the growth drivers to meet customer demands for the best-of-breed technology products and solutions without any waiting period. Adding more value to products and services, various national and regional distributors have left no stone unturned to complete and accomplish themselves as unbeaten. With a right combination of resources, distributors bring technology solutions to the market and, in the process, create a true value proposition for its partners. There is no denying that the distributors are the cheerleaders of the industry as they provide customers the latest and most relevant technology solutions and act as the growth drivers to meet their demands for the best-of-breed technology products and solutions without any waiting period. Armed with the best -of- breed technology solutions, various national and regional distributors have made their mark in the value-added landscape. Today, the ubiquitous use of IT products and processes can be attributed, to a great degree, to the presence of a large distribution channel in the country, which has carved a niche for themselves through their reach, presence and financial commitment. With the passage of time, Value Added Distributors (VADs) are making their presence felt by creating an enhanced and superior level of service for partners and customers in the technology space. The distributors are well on their way to align their business models more closely with their tech vendors. VADs will provide the distributors/channel partners with highly-skilled technical support to offer deep expertise for world-class customer satisfaction. VADs will also offer training, educate and help reseller understanding the customer requirements to deliver appropriate solutions, understanding the requirements that they should go all out to create a more compelling demand generation. VADs need to help VARs to generate demand around multi-vendor offerings. Instead of just focussing their attention on ‘boxes in/boxes out’ effort, VADs need to offer value-added services as an extension of the manufacturers’ sales channel. It helps in the alignment of their products with the goals of the manufacturer. This year, distributors have realized the massive opportunity that Big Data, Cloud Computing, e-commerce and IoT (Internet of Things) provide as newer pastures. Thus, majors like HCL, Ingram Micro and Redington have gone very aggressive while promoting various offerings to the channel. Further, technology disruption makes all the distributors and VADs to work consistently by maintaining effective strategy to be more successful. While there are players who are established, some emergent players have jumped the bandwagon. VARINDIA looks at the current dynamics in the distribution space where the emergence of VADs is an obvious corollary.

Movers and Shakers- Software Integration When we think of the IT industry’s heavyweights, we immediately envision the top vendors. But there are major players on the other side of the coin who have an immense effect on the IT Business world. These players are Independent Software Vendors (ISV) and Application Service Provider (ASP). It is tempting for software vendors to enter into a partnership with ISVs or ASPs who provide them the business acumen in delivering superior solutions to their customers.

Independent Software Vendors (ISV) An ISV is expected to deliver the solutions to end users with simplified licensing option and to work closely with the software products that run on one or more operating system platforms and computer hardware. ISVs are the organizations that exclusively develop software or software solutions instead of being part of a computer system or being a hardware manufacturer. The ISVs get encouragement and support from the firms like Microsoft, IBM, sales force, Hewlett-Packard and Apple who provide the platforms. Here comes the role of ISVs. As the demand for open source solutions increases players like Red hat and Attachmate groups make ISVs to deliver superior solutions to their customers. To sum up, ISVs make and sell software that is added to platforms.

Application Service Provider (ASP) An application service provider (ASP) is an entity that offers services to the organizations and individuals in the form of access over the Internet to applications and related services. Otherwise these services, also referred to as “apps-on-tap,” would have to be located in their own personal or enterprise computers. ASP services which have all the potential of becoming a viable proposition can stand in good stead not only for smaller companies with tight budgets but also for big enterprises. ASPs are coming to the forefront of conscious attention due to the rising costs of specialized software SMBs are unable to sustain. The growing complexities of software have also resulted in to increasing costs in distributing the software to the customers. ASPs play an important role in minimizing the costs of such software. Taking into account the role played by the VARS (ASPs & ISVs) in the whole ecosystem, we think it imperative to give attention where it is due. Below is the rundown of the ASPs and ISVs in India. 3I INFOTECH LTD.

Value Added Resellers (VARs) of India A value-added reseller (VAR) is an organization that adds features or services to an existing product, then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or a complete “turnkey” solution. As the technology market shifts from capex to opex spending, the future of the VAR is uncertain. Without doubt, the days are numbered for traditional box sales. But, if VARs embrace the cloud and the market shifts to on-demand/pay-as-you-go service models, not only will VARs survive, but they will thrive. It all comes down to relationships, and no segment of the industry has relationships like the consultative VAR. Value-added resellers play a prominent role in the computer industry and provide additional hardware, installation services, consulting, troubleshooting, or other related products or services. Value-added resellers form an important part in the distribution chain for many products. They are able to earn higher profit margins if they effectively manage their value-added services. End-customers no longer really want to know about the pieces and parts that make their systems work. They just want those systems to keep on working. SLAs, customer service, and excellent support have become the true market differentiators, and those are the areas in which many VARs excel. VARs are organizations which provide customers a stable environment and also allow them to offer add-ons to offer a bouquet of solutions. Since the time constraint is the major irritant, VARs enhance the value of the products it resells by including complementary products or services, usually as part of a package deal. Valueadded resellers also provide additional hardware, installation services, consulting, troubleshooting, or other related products or services.

CSR initiatives

CSR – Not a Charity but a societal Responsibility…….. In business world today, Corporate Social Responsibility is gaining currency as never before. 0rganisations are working with missionary zeal to give back to the community, thereby having a great impact on the lives of millions of people around the world. Today, companies realize the value of being a contributing force behind positive development for the community and the country at large. They are extremely responsible and sensitive to the demands of a community. There is a passion to take a step beyond business. However, it is also to the point to underline the fact that CSR activity also makes good business sense when it comes to venturing new markets and creating new prospective customers. A look at the companies with good work in the CSR front indicates that CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities can result in a better performance and generate more profits and growth. However how a company perceives its CSR responsibility depends on various factors such as the markets in www.mybrandbook.co.in

which it operates, its line of business and its size. In recent years CSR has become a fundamental business practice and has gained much attention from the management of large international companies. Whilst so far CSR was mainly promoted by a number

Corporate Social Responsibility of large or multinational companies, it is now also becoming important to small national companies. A company’s long-term success can only be achieved for the present and the future in

healthy social surroundings with a positive reputation in society. Companies must have the value of caring and sharing ingrained in their values framework. India has huge needs that require significant investment in terms of volunteer hours, funds and overall management. Sharing is our Indian culture and we must continue to do our part in these endeavours. Today CSR initiatives are not just limited to random acts of charity, rather it is moving towards giving back to society as a responsibility. It has been proved that a strong CSR program can not only give a company the much needed competitive advantage it seeks but a chance to go beyond their regular business objectives. Carefully designed CSR programs that effectively leverage the company’s core competencies can help organizations evolve into responsible and reliable contributors to societal wellbeing. Here we present how the companies are focusing their CSR efforts to be socially responsible and at the same time making business sense out of this. Brand Book 2014

Ganesh Guruswamy, VP & Head of Design Operations, India Design Center, SanDisk Corporation In 2013, Sanjay Mehrotra, President & CEO of SNDK committed to the vision of celebrating its 25 years anniversary with the launch of campaign to give back to our communities worldwide called Celebration Through Service (CTS). Our goal was a lofty one – to have 100% volunteer participation of SanDisk’s employees. They would not only be giving the organizations and causes they volunteered with the gift of their time (we asked for a minimum of 3 hours per employee minimum. The SanDisk Foundation would match every volunteer hours performed at $45/vol. hour. Worldwide, the overall result was 16714 volunteer hours performed and more than USD$890,000 donated to organizations providing critical services to our neighbours in need. The SanDisk Foundation is aimed at achieving the following goals: To strive for excellence and efficiency in conducting our community grant making, volunteer and corporate social responsibility activities, to achieve maximum impact by responding to non-profit agencies' greatest needs, to be recognized as a philanthropic leader in locations where we have a significant presence. Our mission is simple - to reflect the values, orientation and commitment of SanDisk to be exemplary corporate citizens with the global community. We also believe in partnering with other corporate towards such causes and make the CSR footprint larger.

Sonali De Sarker, Director Human Resources, NetApp India NetApp as a company believes in giving back to the community and empowers its employees to be responsible citizens of the community. Through, its Corporate Social Responsibility program, called VTO on the Go! (Volunteer Time Off) NetApp enables its employees to take five days of paid leave (40 hours) per calendar year, to volunteer their time for social causes they are individually passionate about. The employees can volunteer their time with any nonprofit organization to assist in causes like disaster relief, elderly care, environment sustainability, education for children in orphanages, career guidance for youth in government schools and providing medical care to the terminally ill. Globally, NetApp’s charitable contributions in cash, in-kind and volunteer time off programs were valued at $4.9M for FY 13. NetApp’s ‘Volunteer Time Off’ is a unique benefit that empowers its employees to make their own choices on how and when to contribute and give back to the community. Employee testimonials substantiate that participating in this program has benefitted them at a personal level and makes them feel proud to be a part of NetApp.

S. Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer Acer India Touch is all pervasive, having penetrated all facets of our lives including computing. Being a leading technology innovator, Acer India has always been pioneering new devices leveraging the intuitive capability of a touch interface. Taking forward its association with the power of touch, Acer India, announced Touch of Joy - a first-of-its kind initiative in the country. This activity is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR). As a part of this initiative, the company will be partnering with Rotary Clubs across India and organize awareness camps to educate people about the need for skin donation while dispelling common myths about the process. While awareness about organ donation is on the rise, awareness on skin donation is still not high. Cadaver skin donation can prove to be a fresh lease of life for burn victims since burn research suggests that skin grafted onto a severe burn victim is a life-saver for the victim. Burn injuries, on the rise in India, are the second largest group of injuries after road accidents. The cost of cadaver skin is very low as compared to commercially available synthetic skin substitutes that are extremely expensive. There is a need to establish more skin banks and encourage skin donations, healing burn victims all across the country.

Chandrasekar Krishnamurthy, Vice President, Global Services, EMC India Center of Excellence For EMC CSR is beyond financial funding. It is embedded in our DNA. We have maintained a continued focus on children and education and are focused on creating a change in our immediate community. Our School Adoption Program is a hugely successful program. Under this program, we have adopted Government schools in the Whitefield area of Bangalore and assist in infrastructure and academic support to the schools. For us CSR is all about empowering the community in which we operate by enabling the children with the power of knowledge. It also entails creating sustainable programs for the benefit of the children which have a long lasting impact and can be owned by the community at a later stage ensuring the longevity and the success of the program. Most importantly it involves making our employees the ambassador of our company's CSR efforts and initiatives which ensure a deeply committed and passionate group of dedicated volunteers who are dedicated to a cause for life.
