HELLO INDIA
Digital Innovations & Disruptive Technologies Changing the mantra of Business T
echnology is changing the definition of the business world. Digital innovations such as big data and analytics, cloud and mobile solutions, social media and the IoT are changing the dynamics of competition across industries. Disruptive technologies are on the horizon and businesses need to take the initiative to keep up with it. By identifying some of the disruptive technologies on the horizon, however, companies can create a plan to adapt themselves for the future. It is true that disruptive technology is all about innovation that creates a new market or business model while replacing the old one. Historically, there have been a variety of disruptive technologies that will often force companies to change the way they operate and sell. Technology is continuing to advance, and every day various innovative solutions are hitting the market. For instance, the personal computer displaced the typewriter and e-mail took the place of traditional letter writing, shaking up the greeting card industry. Similarly, smartphones has become an alternative for the camera industry. The e-commerce industry has also been a big hit to the business of VARs and resellers. There is no doubt that the Cloud technology has become increasingly popular in recent years. Internet of Things (IoT), on the other hand, will make it possible for everyday objects outfitted with technology to receive and send data. With the approaching New Year, a newer technology like Genomics is going to be unveiled. It will combine the science used for imaging the base pairs of nucleotides and IoT ,these advancements are only expected to grow with easier updates, improved mobility, better storage security and 3D printing (3D printing will help make solid, three-dimensional objects from a digital file). While the Government has come up with various schemes for pushing hard for “Make in India” agenda, the local mobile-phone manufactures, however, say that as much as 99 per cent of manufacturing is still being done overseas. The policy says, the duty on components is zero. We have observed that almost no actual manufacturing of mobile phones is really happening in the country as the current tax structures give incentives to semi-knocked-down kits (SKD). Hence, the Government has to come out with a policy encouraging for complete-knocked-down kits (CKD) that will kick-start the overall mobile phone manufacturing industry in India. On the Smart City front, though nothing substantial has come up, there has been a rating of cities recently to be transformed into smart cities done on a score card of 100 based on certain web-based indicators, where Tiruchirappalli and Mangalore have been rated as above 90. The other leading performers like Tumakuru, Indore, S. Mohini Ratna Raipur, Jaipur, Surat, Ujjain, Haldia and Kalyan-Dombivali. This might take time, but let us cheer on this and Editor, VARINDIA wait and see which city will be the first one to be smart. mohini@varindia.com I wish all our valued readers Merry Christmas and a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year ahead.

VMware keeps its Channel strategy Clear and Simple Sundar Balasubramanian, Senior Director of General Business – VMware tells VARINDIA of what the company's priorities are with regards to partner selection and programmes and how VMware is addressing the change in the technology landscape with the help of these partners -
T
he way the industry is moving, the number of channel partners has to grow in terms of addressability, not only in the metros but in smaller areas as well. Companies are going online, adapting big data analytics and hence, their infrastructure has to grow at the back. “From a VMware standpoint, if I take the top six cities, our partner eco-system has matured. I think we have enough and more in terms of factors like capability, capacity and addressability. Among all the bigger strategic initiatives, we will see a lot of action on our geo-expansion. To carry this message of virtualisation and VMware and to get to the next 10 cities, we are making very sharp investments. That's where you will see a lot of partners that we start focusing on,” states Sundar Balasubramanian, Senior Director of General Business – VMware. As a part of its strategy, VMWare has decreased the number of direct managed partners. Earlier it was around 80-85 but now it has come down to 36. “We did decrease it over the last five to six quarters. We are a very fast-changing company. Five years back, we were a server virtualisation company and now we have very rugged products for network virtualisation, storage virtualisation, end user computing and others. We can do a public, private or a hybrid cloud. Our entire software defined data is a fast-changing story,” says Sundar.
Enabling Partners...
VMware’s Partner University is a worldwide programme which is very well-structured. It uses this as a kind of vehicle to enable the partners. A substantial amount of money goes into partner enablement, partner rewards and partner programmes. “This is one way of how we actually take the message to the partner, in terms of our facilities or products which we are selling,” Sundar says. Partner University is basically an enablement engine for which selection of partners is definitely made based on the level of competence. “Partner University will simply help you get to the next level of competency. You can't be a Premier Partner unless you have solution competencies,” he says. VMware also has this programme called Power Play. “Every time after we are halfway down the year, we take two focus areas and make sure that we do the entire nine yards on that focus area, starting with rewards, enablement, engagement, demand creation and generation. Power Play has been most successful around vSOM, vSAN and AirWatch as well. This in my views is the most impactful programme that we are on,” he agrees. VMware also has the Price rebate programme. In the last three quarters, VMware has seen a substantial adoption of that programme being accepted. However all the rewards in VMware’s partner programme is based on the certification that partners have and categories they are into. The company has three categories of partners - Premier, Enterprise and Professional partners. “Our programmes are pretty transparent. They are worldwide programmes and there are no deviations based on countries. We assign senior partner managers and

Sundar Balasubramanian Senior Director of General Business VMware engineers to help those partners and ensure to work very closely with them in accounts. That brings us to a much focused list of partners. Factors like of whether a partner can go into the market to take the message, talk to a customer and have a conversation and the capability and the commitment to carry forward that deal play a considerable role in choosing our partners,” observes Sundar. VMware however doesn't do seasonal programmes. “We don't do Diwali and Christmas programmes because we generally stick with a few meaningful ones and see it through the entire life cycle.” Sundar reiterates.
Lastly...
As Sundar points out it is not VMware that selects its Partners but is the other way round. The simple reason being the defined and transparent programmes that VMware has. The company has a very clear structure in terms of certification, competency. Sundar knows that as a channel-centric company, VMware can give the right level of guidance both from a programme and an enablement perspective. The company indeed spends quite a lot on enabling partners and on technologies. n samrita@varindia.com

Channel Chief
Brocade going aggressive in tier-II and -III markets Srikanth Natarajan, Director, Channels & Alliances, India and SAARC, Brocade, discussed with VARINDIA on the recent upsurge in tier-II and -III business and the key drivers behind it
R
ecently, tier-II and -III markets have emerged as the key drivers of Indian technology market. These markets are contributing hugely to the overall revenue growth of an IT company. Witnessing the pull from the smaller cities, the big vendors are also concentrating on meeting the needs of these markets. Moreover, the data center growth in the tier-II and -III markets along with several government initiatives and the expansion of BPOs-KPOs have created big IT opportunity in the smaller cities. Pull from Tier-II Many data centers are mushrooming in smaller cities which invariably will lead to increased IT infrastructure needs. Several government initiatives such as financial inclusion, digital India, Smart Cities, Make in India and the expansion of BPOs-KPOs have also created a big IT opportunity in the smaller cities. As a result, this has generated a significant need for vendors to work with channel partners who have presence in these cities to meet sales and business expansion targets. “We have a handful of partners in the tier-II and tier-III cities who are bringing business for us. Brocade is very aggressively working with these partners to develop specific business plans and targeting specific customers. Brocade has seen that channel partners in the tier-II cities are very efficient in providing solutions to customers in remote areas and hence it is very important to have a strong presence in such markets as well. There are also continuous marketing activities targeting these regions. We are already participating in a number of forums and events along with our partners,” said Srikanth Natarajan, Director, Channels & Alliances, India and SAARC, Brocade. Brocade partner ecosystem The market has been transforming, particularly on the cloud, mobility and social networking fronts over the past several years. This transformation has created the need for Brocade to build out a "stronger ecosystem". Brocade partners in India fall under the bracket of about top 150 players across the country (Rs.100–500-crore business). They are entrepreneurs and they have built companies in the late 90’s and work with customers in the banking, defence, enterprise and government sectors predominantly. Brocade is currently working with 30–40 partners. Interest for Brocade has already set in in the marketplace and partners are also bringing in business for Brocade. “We work with partners in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Bangalore, New Delhi and Colombo in Sri Lanka. We are also looking at potential partners in Kolkata, Dhaka and Bangladesh,” added Srikanth. Brocade handpicks its partners and keeps them very close. So this gives the partner community confidence that Brocade is different from other OEMs. It will be quality over quantity and the key focus is that partners should understand Brocade’s technology well. “We are looking at partners for Brocade Vyatta routers. We are also training partners on SteelApp products from Riverbed as a result of a recent acquisition. The market is also swinging towards SDN and Brocade is leading the charge and is interested in working with partners who have skills of selling software as well,” said Srikanth. Brocade is committed to help partners grow their businesses, leveraging its innovative, highly-differentiated technologies. Adding further he said, “We work closely and collaboratively with our partners to develop their solutions expertise, sales skills, and profitability. The Brocade Partner Network (BPN) supports our partners by making a shared investment in developing knowledge-

Srikanth Natarajan Director, Channels & Alliances, India and SAARC, Brocade rich practices that address evolving technology trends and changing customer needs. The BPN offers a complete set of enablement programs and resources that help our partners grow their businesses and improve their bottom line. Brocade is also investing in providing the building blocks for cloud offerings so that partners can deliver networking solutions covering both cloud and on-premise solutions. We give good incentives for selling the Brocade brand. We want partners to make money from Brocade’s products. For some of the fast-selling switches, we have very good incentives.” Brocade wants to handpick partners across markets. It will be quality over quantity because a Brocade sale is not an easy one, Brocade deployment is a complex one. Brocade wants partners who understand technology and who have the data center DNA in them. Government initiative – an opportunity According to Gartner, spending by the Indian government sector on IT products and services is expected to grow 5.2% to US$6.88 billion (about Rs.45,402 crore) in 2015. The Indian Government will spend on digitization, infrastructural improvements, push for manufacturing and technology in healthcare, agriculture and development of 100 smart cities. Technologically speaking, if executed properly, the digitization drive and smart cities will be grand platforms to leverage and adopt new technologies that will shape the future, and I think that there is a great opportunity to showcase how new technologies can enable and empower a demography that is as big and diverse as India. The large amount of data that will be generated as a result of these initiatives will require many applications to function seamlessly. Allowing latency and high-performance network environment will play a key role in enabling a resilient and agile IT infrastructure that will support the smooth functioning of applications. n aparna@varindia.com

ROUND ABOUT
How long should we wait for a chronicle of Delhi? T
his time also, I was in the grip of trepidation before penning this column, stemming out from the habitual indecisiveness as to what should be the thread of the thematic sequence. First, I thought I should write about “net neutrality”, a subject close to my heart and closely linked to my profession. There was a valid reason for hobnobbing with that theme. In the near future, the US Court of Appeals for the DC circuit will pronounce the judgment on the much-awaited decision whether net neutrality rules, which prevent telecom companies and service providers from playing favourites, is valid or not. The debate is taking place cutting across geographies on this issue. For Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, it will be a do or die proposition. He launched internet.org, a concept which, he thinks, can revolutionize the penetration of internet in the developing countries like India. The future of this ambitious project is dependent on the outcome of the case. The US media is agog with the likely outcome of the case and there are write-ups about the profiles of each judge speculating as to what would be their thought processes, which are also spilling over to the Indian media. But I have decided not to write against the net neutrality for the simple reason that it would be more appropriate to study the decision first before deriving any conclusions. That compelled me to look for other topics. As I leisurely looked through the Sunday papers, I was pleasantly surprised to see a news item in the Times of India about its literary festival. What struck me was the article’s caption, “Delhi is for all due to Ganga–Jamuni Tehzeeb”. For those who have read my column last month might know that I attempted to sketch a chronicle of Delhi, capturing the city over the millennia – its growth, sorrows, tragedies, predilections and proclivities of its rulers and inhabitants. But Delhi’s history is seamless and cannot be captured by historians and excavators alone. Can Delhi be defined in precise terms? As I had mentioned in my last column, a consensus still eludes as to who created Delhi. Why Delhi is shrouded in mystery? Is it on account of that its past history is clouded or the chronicles were systematically destroyed after every conquest? There are possibilities for such occurrences. Subjectivity makes history farce and brings it close to fiction. Some of the medieval histories are classic examples.

had engaged British soldiers of repute to train his army and bestowed upon them great titles and honours besides huge salaries and perquisites and treated them as nobles.
A good number of them are platitudes or paeans to the kings and courtesans, who had ruled the roost and took great pride in flattery. Let me quote from the report that appeared in the Sunday edition (29th November, 2015) of the Times of India: “There has not been a lot of work (about Delhi) after 1947, says Sadia Dehlvi (one of the panellists at the literary festival). RV Smith and others documented the changes in Delhi, but it was Khushwant Singh who made Delhi fashionable.” Indeed, the Delhi of the past is confined to novels and history books. The common man is least aware of the moorings of the Delhi bygone. He or she does not know the last emperor – Bahadur Shah Zafar – had always made it a point to attend the yearly Phool Walon Ki Sair – held in Mehruali, which was an important landmark during the Mughal period. People living in Shajahanabad (walled city) visited Mehruli in hordes, travelling the entire day to reach there, traversing thick forests and ridges to witness the great cultural feast and often attacked by robbers on the way. Not many know that some of the British officials promoted the event and regularly took part in every ritualistic festival – be it that of Hindus or Muslims. The last emperor Zafarwas a great patronage of art and culture and he promoted them whether the festivals belonged to Hindus, Muslims or Jains. He
The decline of the Mughal Empire left those who were dependent on the emperor high and dry, and Ghalib was one among them. The penury compelled him to seek some job but his pride and prejudice prevented him from begging a job. Upon knowing his current state of penury, the principal of the Delhi College – a British – offered him a job of a Persian teacher. Decked in his ornamental outfits, Ghalib went to the college for joining with the great expectation that he would be welcomed by the principal at the gate as was the hospitality he used to receive from other organizations. Despite waiting there for hours together, he could not find traces of anybody coming to receive him, leave alone the principal. After some time, he ventured to enter the college premises thinking that some mess-up might have happened on the part of the college authorities and landed himself at the principal’s office and quizzed about the absence of a formal welcome to him. Upon the principal telling him politely that it was not the tradition of the college to welcome teachers to the college, Ghalib retorted back that he did not want to join a college where he was not welcome. There ended his tryst to become a teacher at the college. Now let me come back to the subjectmatter – the need for a chronicle of Delhi or for that matter the chronicle of every city, town, and family. What we come across often are sweeping statements and facts uttered in chronological order without giving importance to the ordinary people, his way of life, life aspirations, sorrows and little joys. We rarely come across what a potter or a weaver or a tailor did during the Mughal period or how people transacted business or reared their families both at the good and bad times. That history will have life and blood and people at all times can relate them to that period. The pertinent point is how we can start writing history on these lines. I feel that the ICT has made things easier and simple. Now everyone can write a blog, his account of his own life how high or low he or she may be and it will be there for everyone to read. That is the change technology has brought us to. Let it be applicable to history too. n

They found it immediately saved physical filing space and improved the accessibility of archive folders by allowing users to view them from their computer screens. All Gesundheit Nord’s medical centres are now equipped with radiological meeting rooms and Canon video projectors where regular demonstrations take place with doctors and radiologists to discuss findings and treatments with their colleagues.

Fight against counterfeit by Canon
Counterfeiting is one of the most deadly viruses that affects the entire IT industry. It not only tarnishes the image of original brands but also adversely affects the economy. China is the biggest source of counterfeit goods in Asia. It is estimated that as much as 30% of the counterfeit products worldwide are being manufactured in China. Looking at the data from a reliable source, it is found that counterfeiting contributes nearly 8% to China’s GDP. As far as the Indian market is concerned, counterfeit products are easily accessible in the Indian market. Metros are the main spots for manufacturing infringed products. Canon is one of the many global brands affected by the illegal counterfeiting of its products. Canon works closely to fight against counterfeiting on a worldwide basis, to protect the valuable Canon
brand and to safeguard the customer value that comes with using genuine Canon products. Canon has been fighting against counterfeit in India for more than 10 to safeguard the interests of their costomers and always encourages reporting any possible counterfeit activity. To protect customer's right and brand reputation, Canon has been actively extending anticounterfeit raids all over the country. A unique Canon hologram is included on the packaging of all genuine Canon ink cartridges, laser toners, copier toners, cameras and camcorder batteries. The hologram has a unique colour-changing feature which appears as an iridescent gold when viewed from the front, but changes to a dark iridescent green when tilted horizontally. If the hologram is counterfeit, this colour change does not occur or the change is slight.
Why buy original Canon product? • Genuine Canon supplies and accessories are manufactured under strict quality standards to ensure that consumers enjoy the full potential of their Canon products. • Counterfeit supplies and accessories are possibly manufactured with poor quality parameters as observed from seized counterfeits during raids. • Counterfeit Canon printing supplies may cause poor equipment performance, including low toner/ ink yield, inferior print quality and toner/ink leakage. • Counterfeit Canon accessories may cause product malfunctions, or leading such batteries to overheat, leak liquids, ignite and/or explode.

CTRLS – Asia’s largest Tier4 Datacenter and Managed Services Provider is enabling Global Fortune 500 and ET 500 Companies in India
T
he business landscape in India is constantly changing across e-commerce, BFSI, healthcare, retail, education, as they are adopting new and better business and IT models to gain competitive advantage. Also, new and disruptive technologies such as Cloud, Big Data and Mobility are changing the way data is being generated and consumed. The advent of IoT and Smart Cities would further lead to a large generation of data from connected devices, necessitating a huge demand for datacenter space, including Compute, Storage and Disaster Recovery. Today, CtrlS is the trusted advisor to over 3,500 Indian and world’s leading organizations, including ten of the Fortune 100 companies globally and twenty-three of the ET 100 companies in India. It serves major banks, telecom, e-commerce, media, insurance, healthcare, retail, FMCG, IT/ ITeS, manufacturing companies in India and across the globe and works with all the major worldwide leaders in Servers, Storage, Datacenter equipment and software and application technology players. “We are vendor-agnostic and firmly believe in leveraging each partner’s strength aligned with our business goals. They surely have played a key role in the success of our organization and in rendering the best of technologies to our customers,” cites Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder & CEO, CtrlS Datacenters Ltd.
A chat with Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder & CEO, CtrlS Datacenters Ltd, was an eye-opener. From speaking about the company’s datacenter business in the country to throwing light on its various service offerings in the country, the Sridhar opened up on many other details that were hitherto unknown. trends and consumption. Talking of tiering of datacenters, they can be classified as follows: As a matter of fact, while most datacenters in India are rated at tier-3 or below it, CtrlS is the only company that has certified tier-4 datacenters. These datacenters are certified by certifying bodies like TIA, after having analyzed close-to 1,800 parameters, some of them being the datacenter's design,
Datacenter business in India vis-a-vis CtrlS Datacenter is poised to become a thriving business in the coming years. According to Gartner, the total floor capacity of Indian datacenters is expected to cross 6.6 million square feet by 2016, and the market size is estimated at $1.3 billion. It could perhaps breach the estimate in the next twelve months due to the current market and technology

the engineering design, the history of natural calamities that have occurred in the datacenter's location, the cabling and even greenhouse gas emissions. “As you know, after a multitude of checks and audits, does a datacenter obtain the credible tier-4 rating

and certification,” asserts Sridhar. CtrlS operates two state-of-the-art tier-4 datacenter facilities in Hyderabad and Mumbai, while the company soon plans to launch its New Delhi facility. The Hyderabad facility consists of 20,000 sq. ft. of space with a rack capacity of 972 and power capacity of 10 MW. The Mumbai facility is spread across 200,000 sq. ft. of space with 30 MW of power capacity. The NCR (NOIDA) facility consists of 100,000 sq. ft. of space. “In the next sixteen months, we would be setting up our Bangalore facility. Our future roadmap includes launching of tier-4 datacenters in the potential tier-II cities across India,” says Sridhar. The tier-4 datacenters of CtrlS in Hyderabad, Mumbai and NCR (NOIDA) are also designed to host mission-critical applications and are dual-powered, including chillers and heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and fault-tolerant site infrastructure with electrical power storage, distribution
facilities and fuel storage. “Our datacenters are carrier neutral equipped with gigabyte bandwidth capacity and provide lowest latency as the network comprises of India’s leading BFSI companies, payment gateways, ISPs and Telcos,” says Sridhar in support of the company’s datacenters. Natural and man-made disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami, tornado, floods, fires, terrorism, etc could disrupt business operations leading to disruption of services, resulting in business losses and erosion of customer’s confidence. Under such circumstances, a tier-4 datacenter is built to withstand earthquakes, floods, fires, etc. The tier-4 standard ensures that the datacenter provides the highest level of security, integrity and redundancy available in the datacenter solutions industry. A tier-4 datacenter, thus, becomes an absolute necessity to ensure business services such as banking, e-commerce, telecom and other mission-critical services to be made available round the clock with 100% uptime. “The recent floods in Chennai not only cost human lives (sadly), but led to business disruption and losses in millions of dollars. Our tier-4 datacenter can help businesses mitigate risks of business losses by helping them deploy the infrastructure in our datacenters and ensure 100% uptime (round-the-clock availability). In addition, the facility has physical security zones. In case an enterprise requires their people to work from a temporary emergency facility due to floods or a natural/man-made disaster, we provide tier-4 Work Area Services (WAR) to ensure people work from our datacenter and serve their customers. A tier-4 datacenter facility hence becomes a compelling need for businesses in India,” explains Sridhar. CtrlS datacenters are built to withstand earthquakes, floods, fires, and have an

It offers the industry’s best uptime guarantee of 99.995%which is near zero downtime powered by builtin redundancy, full Uninterruptible Power Supply systems with N+N redundancy levels, and backup generator systems in the event of any local utility failure. “All our tier-4 facilities are built to withstand natural calamities. Our datacenter facility in NCR region (NOIDA) can withstand earthquakes (Richter Scale 8.5 to 9) and is 100% protected from air pollution such as sulphur. Our datacenter services have had 100% uptime since the commission of our datacenters. To ensure high availability of our facilities, we conduct regular audits including external audits for ANSI/TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Datacenters Infrastructure Standard for Datacenters. In any eventuality, let us say, a city is blacked out due to non-availability of power or water, our datacenters can operate with its own resources continuously for seven days continuously without any service interruptions.” CtrlS tier-4 datacenters allow concurrent maintainability without causing downtime. It has built-in protection against almost all natural elements.
Many facets of CtrlS… CtrlS has had 200 innovations ever since the inception of the company and majority of them have been on the high energy-efficient practices and innovative cooling solutions. Its energy efficiency ensures 30% lowerpower costs for all customers, which is its value addition. “We achieve energy efficiency through datacenter best practices (as a part of innovations) such as elimination of cooling inefficiencies, regular upgrades of all cooling systems, rightsizing the UPS and power distribution equipment, regular calibration and monitoring of cold aisle and related temperatures, matching server capacity loads in real time and process automation for temperature/lighting control,” he says. It has been a pleasure working with the entire CtrlS team and building a robust solution for IndiaFirst Life Insurance.” Service Delivery Process (ESDP) – which is more contemporary and addresses the gaps in ITIL, CoBIT (as both the standards are precloud era). “Our innovative ESDP ensures our customers focus on their core business, while our service delivery teams work round the clock through efficient helpdesk, trouble ticket management, effective and efficient programme management to keep their mission-critical applications available seamlessly,” adds Sridhar. Besides, CtrlS also has a Customer Services Portal (CSP) – a customer-friendly initiative to provide control into the hands of its customers.
Going forward…
CtrlS will continue to invest in its Research & Development to roll out new products and services to address the customer’s pain points and help them align IT with the business objectives and goals. Customer being its number-one priority, its Total Ownership philosophy is aimed at meeting the customer’s challenges through multi touch-point engagement to help address their applications and related infrastructure hosted with the company and ensure that they enjoy the highest uptime through tightly knitted service delivery operations structure and the Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Lenovo ThinkPad Stack
You cannot call Lenovo Thinkpad stack to be a PC, as it is a combination of four devises that provides extended capabilities to the laptop. These small devices, each about the size of a portable hard drive, are designed to nestle on top of each other. The ThinkPad Stack gets its name from the way these different accessories work together. The top of each component in the ThinkPad Stack has a female plug and a male plug-in the bottom. Each of these Stack items is a perfectly capable accessory in its own right. Magnets embedded in each piece of the Stack lock everything together when components get close enough. Power buttons are aligned on the left on three of the four devices. The Stack consists of a power bank, a Bluetooth speaker, a wireless router/access point and a 1Tb hard drive. The speaker can be used for listening music, watching movie or making conference calls. It has a built-in microphone as well. For listening you can either use Bluetooth or a regular 3.5mm jack cable. For conferencing you however need a Bluetooth. It has an 8 hour built-in battery. You can charge this battery using an USB cable or using the ThinkPad Stack battery. ThinkPad Stack also has the USB 3.0

hard drive that has 1TB of space to store documents, photos, videos and mission critical information. A microUSB cable supplied with this hard drive makes connecting to it for speedy transfers pretty easy. A bright green light lets users know when there’s a data transfer happening. The network router can be used to share your Ethernet network connection or your 3G/LTE network connection by using a USB
dongle. The router has a simplified interface to configure it, which can be done from the ThinkPad Stack software. It is currently available for Windows, iOS and Android. Finally, there’s the 10,000 mAh battery. Lights on the outside of the battery let users easily see how much power they have left. Full size USB ports let smartphones or tablets charge directly from the battery. There’s the MicroUSB for charging it too.
‘Lenovo is one brand that manages Service issues really well’
Vishal Sopory, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Iris Computers, shares his views with VARINDIA as to why it is always a pleasure to work with Lenovo –
Iris Computers has been associated with Lenovo ever since the time, in the words of Vishal Sopory, Lenovo was born in India, i.e. when Lenovo bought the PC division from IBM. “We have been Lenovo’s distributor since day one. It has been ten years now that we have been with the company,” says Vishal Sopory, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Iris Computers. The journey has been phenomenal for Iris. It participates with Lenovo across the product lines that it sells in India, barring the mobile phone segment. It is the largest distributor for X Series, Lenovo’s commercial business, key account business, tablets, consumer business and the services business. From a growth perspective, Lenovo is the largest contributor to its revenue and growth till date. “To give you an example, out of the Rs.2,500–Rs.3,000crore business that we will do this year, 40% of the contribution would be coming from Lenovo as a brand,” says Vishal. “The journey has been phenomenal, as we started from a mere $2-million business a month and today have grown to do a business of Rs.100–
Rs.150 crore on a monthly basis,” he further continues. Talking of service support, Vishal says that this is one brand where he has rarely seen customer or partner escalations coming in, which clearly is a reflection of how well things are happening on ground. “Otherwise, we would have partners piling up on us referring to service issues with Lenovo. We have very
minimal escalations coming in for service that probably tells us that things on ground are being handled well,” he reiterates. Also, Lenovo also consistently conducts customer and channel surveys, especially on service and the results show transparently of what or how actually the situation is. In a nutshell, the customer and the channel are extremely happy with the way service is managed. But a one-sided tale would not have made this association a success. Iris as an organization maintains its USP of coming up with fast decisions and business plans and this has helped both in getting plans executed fast. Also the value that Iris brings in terms of innovation is also noteworthy. “With our internal mechanisms and tie-ups with other financial institutions, we create financial models around transactions for partners that ease them to do business with Lenovo,” he says. Summing up, Vishal does say that Lenovo has an opportunity and it does things right, and this is the reason why partners repose faith in the vendor and the distributor like Iris has been associated with it for the last decade.
“Lenovo is lending a helping hand in raising every partner’s business” While heaping praises on Lenovo, Anees Ahmed M. Kagzi, Managing Director, General Technologies, tells VARINDIA as to how his company would help Lenovo steer forward its growth and increase its clientele – General Technologies has been associated with Lenovo since 2004-05, when IBM globally sold off its PC division to Lenovo. “Lenovo has become a much stronger company after the system vertical has come to it. IBM was still taking care of the PC business even after the sell-off for the first five years. Then, Lenovo took it over independently. The service part, however, still remains with IBM and the experience has been very good. Every partner finds it very friendly to work with,” says Anees Ahmed M. Kagzi, Managing Director, General Technologies. As mentioned by many other partners, Lenovo has always been a channel-friendly company, where 94% of the sales come from partners. Incentive programmes have also been very good. In fact, as Anees mentions, they are much better than many other counterparts. “Apart from incentives, they always pay us on time, without our money getting stuck in business. Because of this, there is always a motivation to invest in Lenovo,” he says. Lenovo is engaged in servers, laptops,
desktops, tablets, mobile phones and now they have also entered the storage space. According to Anees, the kind of depth they have for products actually helps in approaching the enterprise customers with the right products. The pricing and the quality of products are also helping partners to get the orders. Indeed, Lenovo is lending a helping hand to all the partners in terms of raising the channel
business. Going forward… In the coming twelve months, Anees says that his company is expected to register a substantial growth of 60 per cent. “We are investing in solution experts, pre-sales and customer relationship. We are investing more on client demonstration of machines from Lenovo. Our stocking level has also increased above 100 per cent.” General Technologies has also added a lot of financial institutions and manufacturing distributors to Lenovo’s clientele. “Recently, we have bagged Stockholding Corporation of India where Lenovo was not earlier present,” he asserts. Currently, the two accounts where Anees is working along with Lenovo are Stockholding Corporation and Mahindra Finance. “The relationship with Lenovo is always going to grow strong because, being a channel company Lenovo is investing in the channels and the next 36 months are going to be really eventful,” Anees sums up.

COVER STORY
Start-ups – Future Enterprises of India The new buzzword “start-ups” which has been hovering on the Indian IT industry for quite a long time has created ripples in the ecosystem. In recent days, India has become an incubator for start-up companies. India, which is one of the youngest start-up nations in the world, has some of the most thriving businesses. The technology start-up landscape has gained momentum and is showing signs of maturity. The start-ups are playing a major role behind technological innovations in the country as they are flexible in embracing newage technologies. As per the NASSCOM Start-up Report 2015, within one year, the number of startups in India has increased by 40 per cent and is expected to cross 4,200 by the end of 2015. With over 100-per cent growth in the number of PE/VCs/angel investors along with a 125per cent growth in funding over the last year,

the Indian start-up ecosystem has risen to the next level. The total funding in India-based start-ups is estimated to be nearly $5 billion by the end of 2015. This growth will only increase as thousands of start-ups are expected to establish themselves in India, generating employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people. This will not only pave the way for innovative services, but will also act as a major booster for the development and progress of the Indian economy. “The start-up landscape does not very heavily invest in the data centers given the nature of the business. The first thing that helps them is SMAC (Cloud, Mobile, Analytics and Social Media) platform. They are the fastest to embrace all these technologies. In a survey conducted by EMC, we have seen that 85 per cent of start-ups have adopted mobile, 54 per cent have embraced cloud, 46 per

Product/ digital start-up landscape So far, the industry has witnessed phenomenal growth for the Indian technology start-up ecosystem, driven by factors such as massive infused capital, acquisitions and consolidations, increasing Internet and smartphone penetration, and an ever-growing domestic market. “The technology product start-up landscape in India is in a take-off state, having gathered the momentum the entire ecosystem is now ready to gain altitude, which essentially would mean that scalable solutions will see a lot of customer traction both in the B2B and consumer space, thereby yielding positive output for the long-term
Pradeep Agarwal Chief operations officer, hSenid Business Solutions investors,” says Sundeep Bhat, National Sales Head, C- Zentrix. “In recent years, the Indian start-up ecosystem has really taken off and come into its own – driven by factors such as massive funding, consolidation activities, evolving technology and a burgeoning domestic market,” adds Pradeep Agarwal, Chief Operations Officer, hSenid Business Solutions. The start-ups are riding on the success of identifying the gaps in traditional businesses and bridging those gaps with innovative products. “Driven by young, passionate entrepreneurs and professionals who are looking to integrate technology with innovative business solutions, the Indian startup landscape is, at present, extremely vibrant and dynamic. Professionals are identifying gaps in the traditional business models and are working zealously towards bridging them through technology. Devices such as smartphones in particular have provided these new-age businessmen an extremely feasible way of enabling services delivery owing to their ubiquitous presence and massive scope for future growth. As such, the country is seeing constant product re-engineering as well as evolution and implementation of new and path-breaking technologies,” comments Ambika Sharma, Founder, Instappy. VC/PE investors Venture capital investments in India have reached Rs.15,600 crore (US$2,363) till June 2015, surpassing the total Rs.14,850 crore

(US$2,250) invested in the entire 2014, setting the stage for another record year as interest in local technology start-ups peak. So it is quite evident that the VC/PE investors are very keen to invest in India and it is gaining momentum. “Globally, VC/PE investors have always been active in the space of ICT. I see the Gen-Y of investors slightly more inclined towards the ‘Cloud Powered’ unified communications. The US start-up community in the ICT space has seen more than a billion US dollars of funding in the last year alone and the inflow of funds will continue for the next few years with an only cap of rolling out multiple services over the same platform. It is important to understand that the hardware business is difficult to sell. So hardware has to be backed with strong software. Investors usually shy away from investing in the product/hardware domain, but there has been a good amount of investment made in the product/digital startup domain, especially when it has been backed by strong software propositions. “In the near future, we believe investors
Ambika Sharma Founder, Instappy
will be more cautious into where they are investing and evaluating the business plans and strategy further stringently,” says Saurav Kumar, CEO & Co-Founder, Cube26. Similarly, Bishal Lachhiramka, CEO & Co-Founder, Ameyo, states, “Investments in this field are gradually picking upstream. Ameyo raised its first round of Series A venture capital funding of $5 million in July 2015 weighing on the possible opportunities the field is open to. India has always been accommodative to venture capitalists, and by adding start-ups and the overarching emphasis on customer experience, the investors are looking forward to new innovations in the contact centre industry.” “The pace of VC investments has been good in technology companies that could demonstrate large market and scalable sales model. The total funding in India-based startups is estimated to be nearly $5 billion by 2015. A large share of the investment has gone in consumer tech firms as opposed to software companies. In 2016, we will see the share of investment increase in software companies,”
expresses Nilesh Patel, CEO, Lead Squared. Although the market has suffered in recent years because of considerable backlash against certain start-ups as a result of layoffs, India continues to grow as a start-up giant. “The last one to two years saw much exuberance in the financial markets for startups, but a correction was expected as part of a natural cycle. With the recent negativity around start-ups after news of layoffs and shutdowns, investors have become a lot more cautious. High valuations demanded by Indian technology start-ups now need to be supported by underlying growth, sound business models and the ability to turn in profits. That said, it will not impact genuine sustainable interest for the Indian start-up ecosystem,” adds Bhavin Turakhia, CEO, Ringo and Flock. Technology innovation with start-ups Unlike traditional companies, start-ups are open to adopt new technologies to come up with innovative and fresh products and solutions. Innovation is certainly on the rise in India and it is not just because of start-ups but because of enterprises investing heavily in R&D. Today, multiple new products have been brought up by start-ups and a lot of them are doing well in the market. Another reason behind the boom of the start-up ecosystem in the country is because start-ups are more willing to take risks and experiment with products. Today, multiple new products have been brought up by startups and a lot of them are doing well in the market. “Technology and innovation are tightly linked notions. Technology is the platform on which innovations are founded. It is becoming quite easy for entrepreneurs who have ideas to develop a digital tech product and launch a start-up. New start-ups are focussing on commerce, analytics, education, marketing and collaboration. One set of startups becomes the cause of another set of startups. For instance, the rise in e-commerce and m-commerce is fuelling the growth of startups in the hyperlocal retail and hyperlocal delivery segments,” opines Tejinder Oberoi, Founder Director, m1-Order. “As such, a start-up culture is much more open to adopting and using the latest

Today, people in rural areas too own smartphones and heavily use apps and data, making technology not just a luxury for the elite few. Start-ups have capitalized on this, creating apps that leverage the low cost of smartphones and infrastructure to bring you goods and services to your doorstep,” expresses Bhavin. “The start-up revolution has not only paved the way for technology innovation and advancements, but a larger cake of emerging businesses solely rely on new-age technology to support their operations. For instance, the storm of hyperlocals has made start-ups to gradually shift to mobile platform and applications as a primary and critical source of communication and business transaction. This wave of technology innovation seems to never cease and surprise customers that are now eagerly waiting for new advancements in business,” says Bishal Lachhiramka. “The present-day Business Models are looking out for specialized solutions in niche markets. They are looking for solutions that are light, can be easily integrated, are secured in open networks and ease real-time governance. Owing to this, the Indian technology start-ups,

Upcoming technology trends As start-ups are the innovators of new and fresh solutions and products, they are the ones which will guide the upcoming technology trends. They will be very much instrumental in upholding a technology as a trend. “While cloud-based technologies have dominated the start-up landscape for a while now, with new breakthroughs constantly being made in the sector, we can safely assume that cloud will continue to play a decisive role in the market. Additionally, data analytics technologies will play a more vital part in defining growth strategies by identifying

current and future trends and providing the budding ventures with valuable insights. This shall empower them with the tools to plan their business evolution and will help them tailor their growth journey for success in their respective industries,” suggests Ambika Sharma, Founder, Instappy. “The new social and economic policies are driving better opportunities for the year 2016. We are expecting many small and medium businesses to open up to technology and join the mega trend of digital transformation. Technology would help these SMBs capture the untapped markets with new innovative business models and transform the business scenario in general. New verticals like public sector, healthcare, media, education and energy will be emerging and would demand innovation in IoT, Cloud and Mobile Application. We will see stronger emphasis on Human-centric Designed Application acting more smartly using Big Data,” says Sanchit Jain, CEO, Dream Orbit. Sanchit Jain CEO, DreamOrbit Co-Founder, AppsOnChat, says, “The top three predictions are Chat led by WhatsApp will penetrate 60+% of Indian households, India will have a near-zero legacy on mobiles, i.e. most people will have a smartphone that is capable of 3G+ connections and lastly almost all ‘field’ related services will be both Geotagging and Mobile enabled.” “Multiple technologies will dominate 2016, leading among them will be applications and IoT. As we move ahead, one will see varied usage of IoT and newer products based on IoT being launched. The products which can add utility to the daily lives of consumers will be the winners. IoT has been talked about extensively, but very few products are today available in the market which are easily accessible to the consumers, have a daily utility and are easy to use. If one can change this, it will certainly be a game-changer,” predicts Saurav Kumar, CEO & Co-Founder, Cube26. Message for start-ups The new generation is the information generation who wants 24/7 access across multiple platforms and also wants unique experiences. So given that start-ups do not have any legacy, they can immediately embrace the latest technology and cater to the digitally native information generation. To become the future enterprise, the startups need to follow a few standards which will help them to taste success. “We analyze five top business drivers for either traditional or start-up companies to be successful. These are: • Predictively spot new opportunities which mean understanding your customers very well, have data sets which are aggregated and doing predictive analytics to become profitable. • Creating unique customer experience which is only possibly when you understand your customers well. • Innovate in an agile way. India is very different from other markets so start-ups have to innovate their offerings in a very agile way. • Operate in real time. So if there is a crisis you need to address it in real time. It is the reality of the start-up companies. • Secure customer sensitive data,” concludes Amit Mehta. n

ow an independent entity after splitting from Symantec, Veritas has recently concluded its Asia-Pacific Partner Link Conference – 2015 in Macau. The information management solutions company and a major backup solution leader have announced the winners of the 2015 Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) Partner Awards at its event. The award ceremony honoured top performing partners who have demonstrated dedication to achieving strong business growth and positively contributing to their customers, the partner community and Veritas.

Addressing the company as a $2.6billion start-up, George Wong, Channel Leader for Asia- Pacific and Japan, Veritas, said, “Veritas is a financially strong and a profitable company. It is focussing a strong market of $15 billion where the data is growing at a speed of 44 Zetabytes and the market at a rate of 9 per cent. The company is among the leading players in the market because of its strong product portfolio, of which 80 per cent products are growing rapidly.” In today’s business, data plays the most critical part in any decision-making, but unstructured data rate is growing faster than structured data. As per the company’s information, only 1.5 per cent of zettabytes of data backed up today is actually actionable information. Many a

time, companies do not know about the owner of the data after backing it up over various hybrid clouds. It results in data fragmentation. It is a challenge for Veritas to make the companies use its storage management technologies as they move more of their data to the cloud. The global opportunity for Veritas, however, at present is huge as it is addressing a $15-million market. The new technologies that have been introduced by Veritas will address a market size of $25 billion globally as it expands to these new areas.
Post-Split… Though ten years is a long time and Veritas was with Symantec, but the fact remains that top enterprises in India have been using Veritas for all these years. There
George Wong Channel Leader Asia- Pacific and Japan, Veritas are banks which have been using it for 20 years and they still continue to use it. But the opportunity for Veritas lies in how it uses these solutions efficiently because the backup infrastructure is still upgraded in the same way as it was in the past. Data
“The new Veritas is a channel-friendly and profitable company. The key verticals of the company in India are BFSI and telecom and applications have exploded, as a result of which the backup window has gone worst. So operationally there was a lot of pain that large customers were going through at the moment. But Veritas has proactively brought in solutions in to the market like the purpose built appliances. This gives enterprises solutions to some of the pain-points they are going through in terms of reduction of the backup windows. “The good part of this separation is that it was a much-planned activity over the last one year. As part of the planning, we have communicated with the customers very well. All the joint contacts were tracked down which were between the customers and Veritas. Probably, about 8–10 per cent of the business has some of those contacts from India. Some of those contracts will continue till their renewal time. In terms of acceptance of the separation, the customer’s impact is zero apart from the contracts built. The support also continues from the same centres that it was globally. We have a huge presence in Pune. The acceptances from the customers are 100 per cent,” stated Balaji Rao, Managing Director, Veritas India & SAARC. After the separation, there have been many customer acquisitions by Veritas. Many of the customers are now upgrading to the latest infrastructure. So the company is observing a serious growth in new customer acquisition.
Veritas – A channel-focussed company As Balaji Rao puts it, India is an exciting market to work for Veritas. “The new Veritas is a channel-friendly and profitable company. The key verticals of the company in India are BFSI and telecom,” he said. Veritas is also 100% channel-focussed company. The partners are divided into two categories – Platinum and Gold. It has 27 Platinum and 73 Gold Partners in the APJ region. 96.5 per cent of the company’s revenue comes from these partners and 4.5 per cent of the total revenue is invested in innovation of products. The Platinum Partners are significantly growing ahead of the market. In the first half of the year in APJ, MEA and America,
the company has seen significant growth through the partners. The company also offers very aggressive sales incentives for Platinum Partners. As the partners start working with Veritas and achieve growth, they are recognized and rewarded for the
acceleration maintained. Veritas has 38 Managed Partners and two distributors – Redington and Ingram Micro in India.
The 2015 winners of the 10 award categories are: 1. APJ Distributor of the Year – Ingram Micro 2. APJ Distributor of the Year for Backup Exec – Networld 3. APJ Global System Integrator (GSI) of the Year – Hitachi Data Systems 4. ASEAN Partner of the Year – CTC Global Pte Ltd 5. Greater China Region Distributor of the Year – Digital China 6. Greater China Region Partner of the Year – United Electronic Corp. 7. India Partner of the Year – Value Point 8. Japan Partner of the Year – Hitachi, Ltd
Commenting on the awards, Wong states, “Our partners play a critical role in growing Veritas’ market reach and scale across the APJ region. The awards are a testimony of our partners’ core competencies in delivering innovative, next-generation information management solutions to our customers. Our heartfelt congratulations to the award-winners, all of whom have gone above and beyond to help our customers achieve agility and efficiency of their IT systems with Veritas’ technologies.” The award-winners were selected based on a key set of criteria that includes overall performance in revenue growth, program adoption, excellence in technical innovation and the strategic implementation of Veritas’ information management solutions across heterogeneous environments that enable
customers to gain control and insight of their valuable information. Balaji also mentioned the opportunities for Veritas Channel Partners. He said, “When we look at mid-market and below it, we see that over a period of time we have a lot of work to do in this market. That is a market where I will be focussed even more with channel partners because we need reach in that area and partners can bring in tremendous amount of value in the form of advocating the Veritas brand and the new solutions to the customers. For partners, the top-end customers continue to be a lucrative market for them but the mid-market and below is where partners will be seeing a lot of revenue. We also have innovative schemes for this market.” Veritas has also planned for a 7-city enablement program in India starting from December which is focussed on the acquisition of new partners. The program will run in Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Veritas will enable its partners with its recently introduced technologies and its big focus will be on the enablement of its partners. n

Propagating a new “Services” focussed Data protection framework Ganesh Kuppuswamy, Director, Arcserve India & SAARC, tells VARINDIA as to what has changed in the data protection landscape, the emerging trends and transformations and the emergence of unified data protection technology in India – What, according to you, are the emerging trends and transformations for 2015, in terms of data protection space in APAC?
We have recently concluded a micro survey on data protection trends across APAC with an aim to assist IT managers and backup administrators to understand how their counterparts around the region are managing their data protection strategies. By identifying specific trends, it is hoped that IT managers and backup administrators will gain insight into technologies they may want to consider as part of their evolving data protection strategies. The survey’s findings discovered that APAC is slightly slower to leverage some of the newer data protection technologies and practices that are being adopted in Europe and North America. Therefore, there is a definite requirement for some of the older “backup” technologies to be supported in the future. The survey reveals that there is interest in understanding how new technologies and practices can complement, and in some instances replace existing infrastructure and practices.
What is driving the demand for unified data protection technology in India? The main challenge of customers is that they have multiple servers, applications and multiple skill sets to manage the data and servers. Companies need one simple solution that can address data protection challenges in an increasingly complex environment. In addition, we see the emergence of appliances as one of the growing deployments options, often combined with cloud Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS). Businesses are, however, now looking to simplify their deployments, a trend with multiple implications. Using specialized solutions to protect one application, or just hypervisors, for example, should be a thing of the past. Integration between virtualization and cloud features in broader solutions, making these niche solutions irrelevant. Unification of data protection under one roof, combined with ease-of-use and a broad set of capabilities is taking hold. Again, an organization’s size has almost become irrelevant when it comes to getting low RPOs and RTOs.
with our own sales, marketing and support, product development team. It is a logical move for us to become independent so we can focus on the SMB market. As an independent company, Arcserve can now laser-focus on its key market targets and invest in marketing, channel development and accelerate its technology horizons. In addition, we have an active customer base of 45,000 end-users in more than 50 countries, and we partner with over 7,500 distributors, resellers and service providers around the world. We are proud of how we interact with partners and customers and provide timely responses.
Why is Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) the future of data protection?

• •
Arcserve’s strategic direction is towards – Leveraging market tailwinds for which Arcserve is extremely well positioned Building on its new Arcserve Unified Data Protection (UDP) and ease-ofuse Accelerating its roadmap to increase and create lasting differentiation Investing in market reach and market visibility
With the explosion of virtualization and the growth of cloud deployments, IT infrastructures have deeply changed in the past few years. These changes have presented both challenges and opportunities to data protection and disaster recovery practices. Missed RPOs and RTOs have become the norm, combined with increased complexity. The adoption of virtualization in production environments mechanically created a data protection bottleneck: it became hard to keep up with all of the new virtual machines, the tools were not adapted and the volumes of data kept on expanding. Not everyone was ready for cloud deployments yet because security issues, bandwidth considerations and data protection tool connectivity to public and private clouds were the common problems.
India is predominantly an SMB market. Do you have any specific strategy to target this market?
How specifically would you For three years, Arcserve was operating like to emphasize on cloud and as an independent business unit inside CA virtualization? 46

Today’s IT is all about service delivery. The current data protection solution architectures make poor overall use of their resources due to a lack of ability to measure and mitigate, process inefficiencies. Obsolete solutions with expensive licensing or niche data protection capabilities only compound the problem by adding complexity on top of complexity. Arcserve Unified Data Protection is the first solution to combine industry-proven backup, replication, high availability and true global deduplication technologies within one solution. It introduces an innovative, next-generation service-oriented architecture. This new architecture is “services” focussed – data and system protection and recovery now become IT services that can be delivered internally or externally, by in-house IT professionals or service providers. It is innovative in that it introduces several new technologies while leveraging multiple, industry proven solutions into a single, unified platform. It is differentiated because of the key technologies and innovations it includes, making it the next generation of unified platforms for data protection, recovery and availability.
What is Arcserve's long-term growth strategy and product roadmap? India is a key growth market for Arcserve in Asia-Pacific and we are going to invest sustainably in this market by increasing headcounts, recruiting more partners and growing the market share in the next twelve months. Since last year, we have been seeing a double-digit growth and are likely to keep this growth rate going forward. n

Cloud facilitating adoption of “Self-Service” economy In a chat with VARINDIA, Joe Gagnon, Cloud Senior Vice-President/General Manager Cloud – Chief Customer Officer, Aspect Software, explains as to how a self-service economy would pave the way for better engagements with customers and the role that the Cloud plays in its adoption –
A
The Cloud self-service solutions are deployed in all geographies. Customers around the world are enabled with smart phones and global companies are realizing that they need to be able to support the same solutions and capabilities in all locations. It will affect the existing business models; deployment needs to happen more quickly, more globally, and more holistically. This will drive a different kind of cost model, a different way of thinking about deployment of capabilities, bringing on new business partners and transitioning old models to new models. This is a big a change to traditional business models and it makes the new models into more resilient and responsive businesses,” observes Joe.
spect is the leading provider of fullyintegrated customer interaction management, workforce optimization, backoffice and award-winning cloud solutions. Aspect helps enterprise contact centers deliver remarkable customer experiences across every conversation and every channel – through a single, elegant software platform.
Rise of “Self-Service” economy…
According to NASSCOM, India's information technology industry is estimated to garner revenue of $225 billion by 2020 and $350 billion by 2025 in the wake of digital and cloud technologies that are redefining IT products and services. The self-service economy is also growing from strength to strength. Enterprises have realized that consumer engagement is quickly becoming a far more influential factor in building positive brand perception since the consumer of today is more “experience-loyal” than “brandloyal”. “The self-service economy is about providing a better way to engage with customers. The self-service economy also has the advantage of being able to provide 24x7x365 access to products and services. The overall experience gets better and the service model improves when the customer is provided the facility to serve themselves and not to be limited in the way that they can do this – just the phone is not enough anymore – all channels must be available and to the choice of the consumer,” explains Joe Gagnon, Cloud Senior Vice-President/ General Manager Cloud – Chief Customer Officer, Aspect Software. The customer of today has in their hands the technology and the know-how to take on some of the tasks that traditionally had to be done for them. This is especially true of the millennial consumer as they feel better about transactions and support interactions when they are involved and active in the process. With Cloud services quickly expanding in India, across start-ups as well as medium to large enterprises, it will further facilitate the shift to a self-service economy because it allows for easy scaling, easy deployment, a test-and-learn facility, ubiquitous access and global reach. With the infrastructure prebuilt and tested, it facilitates easy and early adoption. Lastly, the cost model is great as the monthly payment model allows the customer to get engaged quicker and with less upfront capital. The benefits and the costs better align this way. “We see the worlds as Flat and Frictionless.

Coming together of Microsoft and Aspect
What Aspect and Microsoft bring together is a complimentary capability – its telephony, routing and self-service capability connected to the deep CRM and document management capability of Microsoft to allow for the build out and deployment of a highly responsive customer engagement solution in the cloud where customers of both Aspect and Microsoft can re-imagine customer service with these new capabilities. “The innovation you will see from the combined team reflect the move to a ‘Let me do it customer world’ where we can jointly implement a text-based self-service solution that connects to the contact center in real time for a truly responsive end-to-end support for the customer,” states Joe. Besides, India being a very strategic market and an area of great growth for Aspect, it also sees it as a great place to test out how the Azure global infrastructure works for it. “We expect that we will be building a model for how to ‘stamp’ out this kind of capability around the world,” he says. Customers are today looking to use a POT (proof of technology) approach to validate the effectiveness and appropriateness of the nextgeneration solutions. The cloud facilitates testing “live” with customers quickly and gets feedback to the client so that they know how well the solution was received. “We are seeing customers look for the best integrated solution that fits into an ecosystem – not just all parts from one vendor. Microsoft and Aspect have proven integration points that lower the implementation risk and make the partnership fit better into the current ways that customers are thinking about the buying decision,” Joe sums up. n

“Sharing intelligence on attacks will help mitigate risks” Sean Duca, Vice-President & Chief Security Officer, Palo Alto Networks Asia-Pacific, shares with VARINDIA as to what the security scenario is like in the country and what role it has been playing to keep a check on the regular attacks –
T
hough India is at the developing stage at present, it is at the forefront of a couple of things that are making everyone globally sit up and watch it closely. The government has come to recognize what it needs to do in order to bring it at par with the rest of the global economy. Some of the best initiatives like Digital India, Make in India, and the naming of 100 Smart Cities are a lot more than what any other country could have done at present. “The way how they are thinking of digitalizing the government processes and accounts is another commendable job. So areas like this place India very high when it comes to doing something differently,” observes Sean Duca, Vice-President & Chief Security Officer, Palo Alto Networks Asia-Pacific. However, when you look at India, there could be areas of deficiency. And according to Sean, the three most important aspects of any economy – people, process and technology – are vulnerable to security risks. “For example, from a people standpoint, there are not a lot of secured professionals. I understand there have been a number of initiatives in the last couple of years to churn out cybersecurity professionals but without success. From a process standpoint also, what we have done in the past also needs to change. Technology is evolving no doubt, but we need to make sure that we are constantly evolving in the whole time,” Sean says. The biggest area from the security perspective in India is critical infrastructure, finance, banking, telecommunications and energy sectors. These industries, according to him, need to elevate the security posture in order to reduce such risks. There are also areas that need improvement in these sectors.
A common belief – Prevent Attacks
Palo Alto’s value proposition is its belief on how quickly it can stop these attacks. It has always been one of prevention. “For the last few years, we are focussing on building a platform that could prevent known types of attacks. How we prevent anything that is known and if there is something unknown, how quickly we can turn around to it to make it a known threat, thus providing a mitigating strategy. So if not every time, but breach becomes a good learning point,” Sean states. He further continues, “I think India

we basically do is that, if any customer is attacked, he can automatically share that on our threat intelligence Cloud which we call WildFire,” he shares. WildFire cloud-based malware analysis environment offers a completely new approach to cybersecurity. Through native integration with Palo Alto Networks Enterprise Security Platform, the service brings advanced threat detection and prevention to every security platform deployed throughout the network, automatically sharing protections with all WildFire subscribers globally in about 15 minutes. Palo Alto is, however, working to close the gap from 15 minutes to a single digit. Today, Palo Alto is present across cross-verticals. In the last few quarters, 13% was the highest share that the company has held in almost each of the verticals, whether it is government, telecommunication, education or PSUs, banking, thus upholding the belief that security is one and for all.
The Cyber Threat Alliance
and other countries in the world should start thinking of how to disseminate and share information around the attacks. So if I see something, I should be able to quickly turn around and tell you what it looks like and you go on to have a mitigating strategy to prevent such attack. Also, there are no laws in India or for that matter in Asia-Pacific, there is not any system of indicating or informing the organizations that they have been breached. So this needs to be looked into.” The way Palo Alto has designed the platform is that whether a customer is at the end-point or network, these systems will act as a sensor. “We have 28,000 customers globally and all are active sensors. So what
Sean Duca also shared a few insights on the recently released report on Cyber Threat Alliance (founded by Fortinet, Intel, Palo Alto Networks and Symantec), the vision of which is to come up with an adversary campaign associated with the malware called CryptoWall version 3. According to the report, Cybersecurity vendors should share the intelligence that they all individually collect with each other and with whoever else has the capacity to consume it. All security vendors should have access to the same threat intelligence so that individually each vendor can build better and more innovative products. More importantly, the result of that cooperation among security vendors will exponentially provide better threat prevention capabilities to the shared customer base, as expected in the report. “This as a innovative way to tackle the cybersecurity challenges and one where each organization should look to share as much threat intelligence as they see with other organizations in the same vertical. In the report, it includes detailed insights into how $325 million in revenue was generated for the cybercriminals as well as recommendations for prevention and mitigation,” he says. n

NI aims to empower Scientists and Engineers to be more productive
In a chat with VARINDIA, Robert Morton, VP Sales & Marketing Europe and Satish
Mohanram, Sr. Marketing Manager –IndRAA have discussed the scopes in IoT space, National Instruments’ (NI) role in Make In India and importance of NI Day
Robert Morton, VP Sales & Marketing Europe, National Instruments
amount of ecosystem that we have built will support these people. Hence MakingIn India from a dream to a reality could happen a lot faster. In India it is not about the huge multinational companies that are coming up & also the small companies which are growing and eventually becoming a multinational. So ensuring that we continue to help manufacturing with innovation with our tools is what we aim for. We typically do not do acquisition in any particular area we do more technologically acquisition we have a very steady approach towards investment.
What is NI's go to market Last year with the launch of INsightCM NI has entered into strategy? IoT space. What kind of scope are Our vision is to empower scientists you witnessing in this space? and engineers to be more productive in The Internet of Things we see it in two pieces- Consumer IoT and Industrial IoT. The consumer IoT means mobile technology, wearable, connected car etc. We are very engaged with the companies who are designing and developing those capabilities but are more involved in helping them design, develop and test the technologies. NI observes Industrial IoT as an opportunity for the platforms to get built into the smart systems. As smart systems become more prevalent, we see big opportunity in brownfield side so it’s really where we are adding monitoring and intelligence capability into existing systems to make them smarter. INsightCM is a product which aims the broad market space of condition monitoring. So the companies with high capital assets typically rotating machineries where maintenance and uptime is very important, the ability to gather data from those systems, diagnose those information and then make intelligent decisions based on those information is highly valuable for the companies. We need to ensure uptime of those systems, minimize failures etc which will help them to be more efficient.
Make in India buzz is everywhere. What is your take on this concept and how NI can participate into it? At NI we continuously work on putting together an ecosystem of Partners, certified engineers on all our tools. Now if any company would like to setup the manufacturing line in India, with the
their everyday roles. Our Founder and CEO, James Truchard wanted to invent something to change the world. But as a young engineer he was not able to do that and instead he decided to empower the scientists and engineers to be more productive in their work. So that is the genesis of our company and today we have a broad range of technology platforms that engineers and scientist of any industry can use to meet their requirements. So our go to market is to service and support all the scientists and engineers of the world to become more productive.
From which segment you are witnessing the maximum pull? In general we serve all the industries to be specific aerospace, defence, automotive and traspotation, wireless communications infrastructure and academic are the major NI has successfully hosted its 12th edition of NIDays in Bangalore. The event was attended by over 500 engineers, academicians and researchers who witnessed the launch of a wide range of products that have been designed to revolutionize the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). At the seminar, NI India launched the latest version of its flagship product – LabVIEW, with enhancement in speed and memory usage. NIDays offered 18 technical sessions and tutorials with over 30 products and application demonstrations. It allowed visitors to learn about the latest hardware platforms and applications in the industry.
Satish Mohanram Sr. Marketing Manager –IndRAA, National Instruments segments for us. These industries are applicable for India as well. But to add to that India has an ecosystem of small and medium enterprises which are the start-ups that are coming up. At NI our philosophy is empowering scientists and engineers so in continuation to that people who cannot afford to access the technology we try to help them. So that’s another important area in case of India. We have a program called Planet NI where NI stands for Nurturing Innovation. The idea behind this is to provide our technology to people in a way they can afford it. So this helps them to go through the barrier to build their systems. Once they are sustainable to come up with the solution then they start buying our technology.
What kind of mileage does NI Day provides to the company? NI Day is a forum where we bring our customers, our prospects and our internal team together. Our customers showcase their application about new technologies that we are coming up with so that they can do better what they are doing now. Prospect is they can inspire from other customer innovation and internal team is excited about seeing those technologies that people are doing. Because when we develop a product some of the applications that our customers are solved that we would not have thought about. The latest technologies of our customers keeps us motivated and excites us to do better. So this is in a way I would say is a rolling moss which continues to gather and NI Day is a new rolling moss which keeps on gather momentum for us. n

HPE powers Hybrid Infrastructure with New Class of System Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Synergy runs both traditional and cloud native applications for organizations seeking the benefits of running a hybrid infrastructure. The synergy will leverage fluid resource pools, software-defined intelligence and a unified API to provide the foundation for organizations to continually optimize the right mix of traditional and private cloud resources. HPE Synergy physically brings together compute, storage and networking fabric, and through a single interface powered by HPE OneView, composes physical and virtual resources into any configuration for any application. HPE Synergy addresses the challenges faced by CIOs and IT executives for delivering services that are increasingly applicationcentric for more opportunities and embraces new business models and enters new markets. Much of the pressure to fulfil these ambitions falls on the IT department, which must simultaneously extract more efficiencies and cost savings out of the traditional systems and applications that run their business, as well as provide a foundation for rapid creation and delivery of new services through the use of Mobile, Big Data and Cloud native technologies. Supporting these two very different operating models requires rethinking the way IT infrastructure is built. HPE Synergy addresses this challenge by leveraging a new architecture called Composable Infrastructure which consists of three key design principles: 1.
Fluid Resource Pools a. Compute, storage and fabric networking that can be composed and recomposed to the exact need of the application b. Boots up ready-to-deploy workloads c. Supports all workloads – Physical, Virtual and Containerized 2.
Software-Defined Intelligence a. Self-discovers and self-assembles the infrastructure you need b.

‘Dell-EMC entity is going to be an $80 billion dollar corporation’ Dan Kieran, Senior Director and General Manager of EMC Mid-Tier Storage - Asia Pacific, China & Japan tells VARINDIA of how the joint entity of EMC and Dell is going to be the next big thing in the industry -
E
MC has become a huge powerhouse in the industry and with the joint DellEMC entity coming on board, it is going to be a $80 billion dollar corporation. “There’s very little overlap in the product lines of Dell and EMC and the go-to -market perspective. Dell is quite strong in the consumer space and there will be various avenues from the consumer space, where EMC is weaker. It was pretty public when we announced this thing. You know when you don’t have the microscope on you from Wall Street or the financials or the analysts saying every 9 days you are going to be evaluated, it gives us the abilities to make the big bets. Those big bets could be R&D bets or other bets. We can do
"There are 1.2 Billion people in India. I think by the end of the decade, probably the world will have 30 billion devices that are connected. All these devices that are connected are already generating data. This is the whole concept of Internet of Things" that under the veil of a private company. It is great thing for EMC. Our strategy doesn’t change. We have publically said that our strategy remains the same and then when the acquisition closes, a lot more things will become a lot clearer. The deal is targeted to close in 6-9 months. So, outside of IBM and Cisco, this is going to be a huge $80 billion company,” says Dan Kieran, Senior Director and General Manager of EMC Mid-Tier Storage - Asia Pacific, China & Japan. Data is equated by multiple applications, multiple divisions and in multiple business units. So we end up with huge islands of information, be it business information, sensory information or web based information. And when we go collecting analytics to get insights into the customers,
they are copied in yet another location. If data is in multiple different locations, it’s hard for you to consolidate. So the benefit is to get all your data in once place. That is traditionally where customers have evolved to have multiple different sources of data. “When you have those islands of information/storage, it becomes difficult to analyse across it. So the trend is towards centralizing data to a single location so that you can start to manage and provision it centrally. And when I am doing analysis, I have the flexibility to choose what information I want to use as opposed to grabbing a copy from here and there,” says Dan. Each department might have a different protocol of access. Rather than having a different System for each, centralization can provide multiple different protocols to access the same data. So the data is current and you can secure it cost efficiently, manage it easy with uniform policies across user access. “So that was the concept of our data lake strategy 1.0 introduced a year back. Once you have your data in one place, it is easy to manage and do analysis on. We were successful in converting a lot of our customers towards building our data lake. People are analysing data to find new business benefits from that data. The insights that they get from the data can happen a lot more quickly,” tells Dan. A lot of customers need access to the data lake at remote offices. If they don’t have a good solution to that, it makes skilled workers less productive than they can be. For them to be a lot more productive, they need access to the same data at the same time. With the EMC Edge solution, it allows them that. The latency is not that big anymore. The problem is however getting them 20-25 terabytes of data locally so that they can access it and be completely in sync with the core data centre. “That is a big problem we are solving with our customers from an Edge remote offices perspectives,” says Dan. Lastly… Both EMC and Dell have a good, new channel. The next 6-9 months is going to be significant for both EMC and Dell. EMC’s channel strategy is also pretty simple. There are two things – enablement and empowerment. “We enable our channel partners by giving them the most innovative products and then empower them to go out into the market, whether it’s in this country or any other. The products we are offering now will make it a lot more attractive for them to go after some new customer segments,” explains Dan.
Dan Kieran Senior Director and General Manager of EMC Mid-Tier Storage - Asia Pacific, China & Japan Rapidly India will have more developers than anywhere else in the world. It’s a knowledge economy and the idea of doing innovation and analysing is very critical. India will be more superior to any other region because it has more people and innovative applications, applications that leverage data. “We had the industrial revolution but I think that the innovation we are undergoing now is the new oil and analytics is the new engine. There are 1.2 Billion people in India. I think by the end of the decade, probably the world will have 30 billion devices that are connected. All these devices that are connected are already generating data. This is the whole concept of Internet of Things,” says Dan. This data deluge that is coming needs to be stored somewhere. It is not just about storing it, but it is about analyzing it and creating new business models out of it. “So India is sort of at the tip of this, I would say, because of the amount of people that are here and the connected devices that you guys have. It’s a great opportunity. I even heard Prime Minister Modi in California a month ago, mentioning about Digital India. I am sure all the volume of data being generated here is second to possibly only China, since they have a bigger population,” sums up Dan. So indeed there is a good opportunity for India. n

it
Avaya is all about engagement, which means information is being shared with the right people and in the right manner with great ease and flexibility. We are actually transforming a particular theme to a very engaged business model. Our GTM strategy is pretty much channel oriented, channel partners are a very integral part of Avaya’s growth. We have platinum channel partners in India; we have global partners with extension in India. One of the important things that we have observed is that the reach and the penetration in the market matters the most. Mid-market is again a very highly focused area for Avaya. A typical mid-market customer looks for the highest technology solutions at a very reasonable price along with easily adaptability, installation and implementation and maintenance. And they
want to buy these products from specific partners whom they are comfortable with. We at Avaya focus on building a large enterprise partners and leveraging the global partners with a specific focus on the recruitment of these partners. Beyond the basic requirement of partners to be customer centric and have a good customer relationship we look for partners who are hungry for innovation. We look for partners who are hungry to serve value to the customer and put Avaya’s perspective into the customer’s mind and make them realize that this is not about the product but about the experience that is aligned. Form this standpoint we are making heavy investments into channel and their learning development, education and helping them in building the concepts and helping them convey the Avaya message and build up their supporting capabilities.
What are your plans for 2016 form the Digital India perspective? It is a very interesting time for the Indian industry. We at Avaya think beyond the Digital India initiative, our focus lies on smart engagement. The Techathon event is where we showcase our innovations for the education, healthcare, emergency services. Apart from that we have observed that India is growing massively in the midmarket and the small enterprise segment and we are looking to attack that segment very aggressively and build cost effective solutions for that market. Google eyeing to open Internet for everyone in India From page no 1 “Mobile has proven to be a great equalizer, giving access to computing to a billion more people and counting, with an idea open Internet for everyone,” Pichai said while laying out Google’s three-step approach to promoting the Internet in India, and his team, many of them visiting from the U.S, talked to the concrete steps Google has taken to help solve the current challenges.
First, Google aims to give people in India and other developing countries better access to the full Internet through better connectivity and high-quality software Google is working with Indian Railways and Railtel to launch RailWire Wifi, providing free WiFi in train stations. Mumbai Central will be the first to go online in January 2016, with 100 more on the way. Marian Croak, Vice-President of Access Strategy & Emerging Markets, said, “Railways are the backbone of Indian transportation and run through the heart of almost every city, town, and village uniting the country. These lines connect India, and working as partners, Google and RailTel will connect India along digital lines as well.” Second, Google is making Google products work better for Indians The “lighter” version of Search results and webpages have been a success, with much faster loading times and increased traffic for publishers. Tamar Yehoshua, Vice-President of Product Management for Search, said, “We take the responsibility of connecting people with the information they need and recognize just how much this can make their lives better in big and small ways.” Third Google has created a new virtual keyboard that makes it easy to type in 11 Indian languages Google recently launched a feature in Google Maps called Offline Maps that allows real-time navigation of roads and searches for locations without a data connection. Jen Fitzpatrick, Vice-President of Product Management for Google Maps, said, “Offline Maps is a feature we expect to be useful around the world, and countries like India will truly benefit when it comes to accessing Google Maps with expensive, slow or limited connectivity. In fact, India is one of the top five countries that have the most people using Offline Maps today.” Google is also working with the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India to add panoramic imagery of 250 Indian monuments, including Hampi and Mahabalipuram, to both the Google Cultural Institute and Google Maps. It does not end here; Google has the
roadmap in the first quarter of 2016, to release a feature called Tap to Translate that allows the instant translation of any text on the Android phone. Caesar Sengupta, VicePresident for Google’s Next Billion initiatives, said, “Our most active users in India translate between Hindi and English multiple times a day, spending lots of time copying messages from friends or colleagues, translating them, writing responses, translating their responses, and then pasting them back into an app. With Tap to Translate you can copy text anywhere on your Android phone and instantly get the translation, right then and there – without ever leaving the app. No more copy/ paste, no more app switching, just instant translations.” Google has also announced a program to train two million new Android developers over the next three years by working closely with more than 30 universities across the country in partnership with the National Skill Development Corporation. Jason Titus, VicePresident of Engineering of the Developers Product Group, said, “We’re already seeing incredible growth in the number of developers in India, and our forecasts indicate that this is growth is not going to slow down anytime soon. At Google, we’re committed to providing access to tools that empower developers to be successful.” The Chromebit, a small device that turns a monitor into a computer, will be available in India starting in January, meant to help boost computing in the education sector. Google pointed to one example of an Indian company, Flipkart, that is taking advantage of some of the latest technologies that are being built in to the Chrome platform for a better experience for Indian users phone and the speeds of the mobile data network. To open the event, Rajan Anandan, Vice President of Google in India and Southeast
Asia, helped explain both the promises and challenges of bringing the country online. “By 2018, more than 500M users will be online in India, from all 29 states, speaking over 23 languages. But in 2020, over 30% of mobile internet will still be from 2G connections. Google has been on a long journey in India to build products that connect more people, regardless of cost, connectivity, language, gender, or location.” Google also plans to partner with 4G operators like Reliance jio, Bharti Airtel, BSNL and Aircel as the company wants to utilize telco spectrum to connect to the baloon network directly from their phones and other LTE-enabled devices. The partnership with 4G operators will definitely help them in meeting regulatory requirements on the one hand and also help them in leveraging existing 4G device ecosystem to provide broadband to consumers in rural and remote areas. The ambitious project namely LOON project has been cleared by the Union minister for Telecom and IT Ravi Shankar. Under the project, Google has proposed to provide internet connectivity in hard to access areas of the country from balloons floating at a height of 20 km using LTE technology. One of the primary concerns with the proposal is that the spectrum band required for transmitting a band between 700 to 900 MHz is occupied by telecom service providers and is currently unavailable. Only when Google gets the clearances from civil aviation and the defence ministries will this project be successful. Also, while one side of the story is that our towns and villages will get access to broadband connectivity, what remains to be seen as to what Google will get from this project. n

“E-commerce is definitely the best bet for retailing phones” Syed Tajuddin, CEO, Coolpad India, has discussed about the recent market trends, the company’s strategy to position the brand among other homegrown players and also on e-commerce as the best retailing option for the new brands. Indian Market India has always been the most dynamic handset market. Despite being a price-sensitive market, it has gradually moved with the flow and continuously adopted the latest technologies and trends in the market. The market has made a shift from feature phones to low-cost tablets to phablets. With the growing data requirement, people have moved from feature phones to smartphones. “The feature phone market is declining and simply because the demands of the consumer have increased manifold since the coming of smartphones, users internet consumption patterns have transformed drastically and are slowly becoming somewhat a necessity. Take, for example, the applications such as WhatsApp, Truecaller, etc. These applications genuinely help users connect with other users by saving call time. As the data requirement of users will increase, so will the need for better smartphones. Feature phones will slowly phase out paving the way for smart devices. It has already begun in India and will continue,” says Syed Tajuddin, CEO, Coolpad India. Similarly, low-cost tablets are also becoming thing of the past and they are constantly being pushed out by phablets with better specifications. Tablets face a constant threat from phablets due to their better specifications and easy mobility. Low-cost tablets may have gained popularity with first- time users, but in the long run they will not be as successful as phablets. “Phablet is slowly but surely becoming more acceptable as the Indian customer becomes more dependent on their devices for performing everyday tasks. A phablet is not only fast playing a substitute for home PCs but helping users interact easily with the help of a fully-loaded device. Also, a phablet is rapidly becoming a better substitute for mobile phones and tablets as it is more practical to carry around for day-to-day needs. A phablet packs for punch as it is equipped with good specifications to multitask on a daily basis,” adds Syed.

Syed Tajuddin CEO Coolpad India Trends The tech-savvy Indian customer is well aware of the technology that comes at a certain price point. Smartphone companies today are rapidly narrowing this gap by providing cuttingedge technology at affordable prices. Users in the Indian market have many aspirations from their device, but the most prominent ones are a good display, camera, RAM, dual-SIM slots, power-packed chipset for smooth performance and space to store data. Apart from the above mentioned features, a tech-savvy user also seeks additional security features like finger scanner, private surfing modes, latest OS, etc. There is no limit to a customer’s expectations from their device, but the real deal is, however, to meet these expectations at affordable price points. Strategy Innovative technology is something which has always kept a company ahead. And being a manufacturer, Coolpad has always had an upper hand in introducing innovative and futuristic technology at an affordable price. “We have been at the forefront of technology for over 20 years. With over 5,000 patents exclusively in the smartphone category, we can be safely credited as pioneers of mobile technology. As manufacturers, we are at an
advantage from local players that source mobile devices from third parties. We are fully capable to bring affordable and cutting-edge technology to end-users at low price points. Recently, we disrupted the smartphone market with our latest offering – the Coolpad Note 3. It is a first fingerprint scanner phone under Rs.10,000. We have taken away a premium offering and integrated it with our value-for-money device. So the customer now can experience features that were available in expensive devices at affordable costs. It is our brand’s philosophy to bring affordable technology to all and Coolpad Note 3 stands testimony to the fact that this device has led other brands to consider packing high-end specifications at lower prices, benefiting the end- user,” explains Syed. Only technological advancement is not the key driver for any company to maintain the position in the market. Post-sales support is also a major driving force for the companies to maintain its customer base. “We have tied up with HCL for aftersales support. With a service network of over 224 outlets spread across India, we are fully prepared to service our customers 24/7,” states Syed. E-commerce as a retail outlet To take a brand to new heights, its channel plays a critical role. It has always been instrumental to form a brand image among the customers. It is the channel that pushes products to customers. Now with the new-age channel – e-commerce, things have become easier for the brands. It gives the new companies a unique platform to build their brands and showcase the products. “E-commerce is most definitely the best bet for retailing phones to the customer at lower costs. Also for new entrants, this is the best opportunity to showcase the product to a larger audience without the painstaking effort to build an offline infrastructure. E-commerce has worked well for us so far, selling 15,000 in under 5 minutes in the first flash sale and achieving similar feats till we announced an open sale of these devices,” concluds Syed.
