HELLO INDIA
Digital India will bring newer ideas W
ith the upcoming budget likely to focus on promoting the culture of product development and innovation, the economy is, no doubt, expected to flourish with the help of digital ecosystem. But, for this to happen, the entire R&D budget for IT companies should be exempted from levies and the transfer pricing made simpler and practical. The Indian IT industry is geared for innovation and global competition. Though we boast of a massive talent base in India, the reality is that we are still overly dependent on imports, especially in electronics and telecom. India being the second-largest smartphone consumer in the world after the US, lots of electronic goods are being imported. India spends $100 billion on the consumption of electronics every year, most of which are imported and these include products like mobile phones, computers, SIM cards, smart cards, set-top boxes, LED lights, cameras, televisions, medical electronics. There is no denying the fact that, though research is done in India, IPRs are still with other countries, which mean that we are buying the same products at higher costs from those countries. There is a great need for developing a mechanism that would necessitate interacting with the industry before developing any technology or solution rather than at the post-development stage. By complementing various initiatives of the Government like Make-in-India programme to encourage local and foreign manufacturers to manufacture in India for domestic and export markets, Digital India for empowering Indians with the power of technology that will eventually help in the creation of digital infrastructure, delivery of governance and on-demand services with special incentives by the Government like Preferential Market Access (PMA) will reinvigorate the Indian IT and telecom fraternity and very soon India will be the world’s fastest-growing economy, leaving behind China. Going ahead, the 100-smart city initiative will offer vast opportunities like automation of street lights where EESL is working strongly towards it. The project will cost around US$10 billion, and the opportunity is for installing 27.5 million street lights across the country with 7 million new lights to be added every year. Currently, many cities and towns are planning to change all their old street lights into LED lights and make them smart by automating their controls. Until now, the traditional automation technologies like GSM or GPRS based have been in use for the past 15 years. But the challenge here will be on how to use the next-generation technologies which are evolving for most efficient real-time connectivity, with less or no operating cost for making smart city and Makein-India a great success. With the Union budget going to be tabled in Parliament this month, we all await some good tidings in terms of market-friendly policies and development regulations towards the upliftment of the IT industry. Hope India carries forward its legacy of the best-performing equity and ranks ninth on the league table of market capitalization (m-cap). S. Mohini Ratna

Which are the verticals you are focusing on in India? Hitachi is focused on almost every key verticals in the country. Government is the most prized vertical for Hitachi. The company is present in most of the state data centers across the country as a result of our rate contract with NIC. Hitachi powers them with virtualization solutions. The vision is to continue growing in this space, find new partners who can bring Hitachi more govt. opportunities and will continue to invest in this business. Apart from govt. there are two other verticals that have come up very strongly. One is BFSI; today nine of the top 10 Banks in this country run on core banking application of Hitachi. BFSI is going to be a very strong vertical for Hitachi because our technology is best fitted to address pain points of the customers in this vertical. IT/ITes is another important vertical for Hitachi. We have large number of customers in this segment who were pre-dominantly Hitachi Data Systems customers because of our dominance in storage technology. Hitachi has moved from storage to an information infrastructure company because of evolution of compute. IT and ITes industry is keen to adopt it however in times to come.

Another growing segment is e-commerce and we want to address it by providing right information and infrastructure solutions to cater to the growth of this sector today and tomorrow.
How important are partners for Hitachi? We are today working with different partners and they are playing an important role in ensuring that we grow with them. These partners are usually large system integrators like HCL Technologies, TCS and Wipro.
What are the revenue earnings from different verticals? We are significantly growing in this country. Today, at least close to 15% of the revenue comes from govt. vertical and it is still growing. We are foreseeing a lot of growth in not only our Hitachi Data System’s customers but also acquiring new customers. 30% of the revenue comes from new customers. The growth we are witnessing with new customers coming onboard is because of our increasing product portfolio. It is not only restricted to storage but also includes flash, virtualization, converged infrastructure, services, cloud. Our growth is hence very dynamic in this country. n

Citrix extending Software-Defined Workforce vision with Partners
iven that the drive today is towards software-defined infrastructure, the evolution for Citrix is today at a stage where it is helping its customers to develop and set up a softwaredefined workspace for their organization. Its goal is to help customers accelerate their journey to this “mobility-transformed business” by enabling secure mobile workspaces and bring complete reinvention of facilities to make them more collaborative and gain increased operating efficiency. “Customer experience has always been the core of our philosophy and our business. Over the last 25 years, we have acquired companies, made innovations in our technology and built it in such a manner that our focus has always been towards one simple thing – how do we help people to live better and work better,” asserts Kaushal Veluri , Director – Channel and Alliances, Citrix India. “Today, we believe that we have the ability to develop a software-defined workspace for the customer as we have a complete solution that will drive this and help customers set up that vision in their location as well,” he says.
Focus – Engage – Specialize A 100% Channel-driven company, Citrix is making some great changes in the Citrix partner ecosystem that will impact its business and partner ecosystem, going forward. “We will always have a limited number of partners, somewhere between 65 and 75 partners. We work with partners who understand our philosophy, have the ability to build our entire solution and articulate and take this to the customer, thus driving our vision statement forward,” explains Kaushal. This forms the genesis of Citrix’s three-pronged strategy, “Focus, Engage and Specialize”. Though this is an India-centric strategy, the Specialize part of it is driven from a Global programme. For the focus strategy, Citrix will focus on a few set of partners who will develop deeper interaction with customers and help them go along the solution journey. It has identified T2 partners like PC Solutions, Ricoh, Orient Technologies, Embee Software, Veeras Infotech, Frontier Business Systems and so on. Citrix also works very closely with SI partners like TCS, Wipro, Dimension Data and IBM. Then comes the Engage strategy, where Citrix shifts focus to its other set of partners, besides its Focussed Partners and engages very closely with its distribution partners, namely Redington and Avnet. “Whatever we do with the Focus set of partners is what we will get our distributors to work with our second set of partners,” Kaushal says. “And a similar type of methodology will apply on them too.” The third strategy, Specialize, is, however, the ultimate game changer that it brings into the entire Channel ecosystem, according to Citrix. In line with this strategy, Citrix has come out with the Technology Specialization Programme, launched earlier in the Citrix Partner Summit, through which a partner will be entitled to become either a Virtualization Specialist Partner or a Networking Specialist Partner or a Mobility Specialist Partner. He, however, needs to go through four critical steps to become a Technology Specialized Partner – 1. He should be having the latest Technology Certification 2. He should be attending four online courses on how to use Citrix tools 3. The partner has to give three customer validations where they have implemented Citrix technology 4. The partner has to take a practical exam

Kaushal Veluri Director – Channel and Alliances, Citrix India Citrix’s Three-Pronged Strategy Focus • 30% reduction in the number of focussed partners • 100% marketing/demand generated investment on focus partners • Announcement of the Partner Mentor Programme – a programme designed to guide technical teams for expertise on Citrix technologies. The launch of the Mentor Programme is aimed at creating specialists within Citrix’s partner community Engage • Partners to share best practices and come up with joint solutions • Ongoing interlock Cadence with focus partners Specialize • Announcement of Partner Virtual Labs where partners can experiment and test cases of customer environment However, Citrix makes sure that it gives something in return to its partners for all the investments he has put in terms of money, time and effort. Its Advisory Reward Programme gives back-end rebate depending on the kind of deal. So while a regular Partner has the ability to earn 5-10% of the deal size as a back-end rebate, a technology specialized partner will earn 50% more on it. Going ahead, 2015 promises to be a great year for Citrix. It will be a year that will lead to a lot of opportunities in the verticals of IT-ITeS, BFSI, Manufacturing, Telecom, Healthcare, Education and Government. Catching on this wave will be its partners that will grow along with Citirx and explore new areas like Software-Defined Workforce. n samrita@varindia.com

ROUND ABOUT
Cybersecurity in Top Pitch R
ecently, the Economist came out with the “Safe City Index” which ranks the top fifty safest cities. Over the years, the ranking criteria applied have changed dramatically. One of the critical parameters among the four benchmarks is cyber safety, followed by health security, infrastructure safety and personal safety. This is a testament to how cybersecurity plays a critical role in urban planning. There are a few who may disagree with the pecking order of the criteria and may question the importance assigned to cybersecurity in ranking safety. Perhaps, the other criteria such as health, personal, and infrastructure should have been given more weight. But those who are aware of the action video game “Watch Dogs”, released worldwide in May 2014, will vouch how important cybersecurity is to an increasingly digital world. “Watch Dogs” is a fictionalized account of a hacker and his efforts to seek revenge after the accidental death of his niece. The game explores the flip side of digital technology and how it can adversely affect the societal life, if someone wants to tamper and malign it. The hacker uses the city’s overarching digital network, which controls technology and information, including key data on residents as the weapon. The video game instructs how malicious programmers can bring about largescale disruption of computer networks on which a city depends on. There are various types of cybercrimes, such as hacking, threats and black mailing, creating malware, espionage, fraud, identity theft, intellectual property thefts – the list goes on. As the digital economy grows, so does the number of cybercrimes. It knows no boundaries – a person sitting in the U.S. can hack into the digital systems in India, and vice versa. Transnational bank and credit card frauds are happening on a daily basis. Almost every aspect of human life where digitization is involved is susceptible to cyber-attacks. Various studies have been conducted from time to time to estimate the number of cyberattacks and the losses on account of them. According to one estimate, nearly 200,000 viruses and other malicious codes circulate every day in the cyber space, affecting upwards of 200,000 computers in the government and corporate offices. The US-based Internet Crime Complaint Center, which has a close link to the FBI, puts that in the country’s losses on account of cybercrimes is in several billions. Also, corporations and government offices have to incur heavy expenditure to maintain, protect, and restore cyber infrastructure. In the U.K., the annual cost resulting from cybercrimes is estimated at US$43 billion – a major portion of that is the result of intellectual property (IP) thefts. In Germany, phishing activity is estimated to have increased 70 per cent since 2010, resulting in huge losses. Increasingly, such crimes have led to the emergence of another industry and that is of
12
February 2015
www.varindia.com
cyber protection gadgets and equipment. The exact turnover of this industry, experts opine, will be in several billions of dollars. Some of the heads under which the preventive expenditure can happen in anticipation of cybercrime are: beefing up security measures such as antiviral software installation costs of insurance and IT security maintenance. Though these expenditures can be treated as losses to the governments and corporations, it ends up in the revenue stream of other sets of industry specializing in prevention of cybercrimes. Now let us go back to the 2015 “Safe Standard Index”. In the ranking, Tokyo tops the list, followed by Singapore and Stockholm. Importantly, Tokyo has landed the top spot due to its high marks in cybersecurity. Among other cities in Asia-pacific, New Delhi and Mumbai were ranked fourth and third, respectively from the bottom. Why is this ranking important for India? We are embarking on building around a hundred smart cities in the next few years. What do we mean by smart cities? Does it mean cities, which boast of skyscrapers, modern facilities, leisure parks and excellent hotels? These attributes alone will not help us emerge as safe cities. They should ensure safety from all angles – this means more investment in equipment, collating intelligence and creating awareness among the public about cyber-attacks. There is an increasing awareness of cybercrimes in India. These types of crimes are being reported daily and the media is also giving prominence to such news to keep users aware of possible threats. The awareness, however, is still sketchy viewed against the great strides India is going to make in the digital sphere. The Digital India programme is embarking on connecting every nook and corner of the country with the mainstream. India has unveiled many programmes like financial inclusion, unique identification to each citizen (Aadhaar) and transfer of subsidies based on such data, clean India, and a host of other projects, which run on digital platforms like mobile texting, the Internet, etc. Our efforts to combat cybercrimes need to be ramped up. Imagine a situation when everything is digitized in India, be they government departments, civic bodies, courts, educational institutions, personnel data of everyone in the country with their profiles. There will be a centralized system for storing such data and someone hacks into that system. The entire country will come to a standstill. Even now, customers of banks face this problem, when the net is down. No transaction can take place for hours or days together till the time the net connectivity is restored. To take another example, how people feel helpless when the net connectivity is slow due to some technical errors. But there are some happy tidings. Civilizations prosper with the same pace
at which they decline. But science is ever progressive. Every calamity or catastrophe marks the upswing of science. The safety report of the Economist analyzes how Japan, which is perpetually under the threat of earthquakes, has emerged as a safer country, with two of its cities – Tokyo and Osaka – figuring pretty high in the pecking order. Japan used science to ward off its threat perceptions. It has planned its cities, towns and villages to adhere to the earthquake resistance norms. All buildings have in-built systems to withstand earthquakes of higher magnitude. It has invested in creating awareness about the precautionary actions to be taken in the event of an earthquake as also devised plans to fast track rescue and rehabilitative works in the event of a natural calamity. India also has to think along similar lines to create capacities for ensuring safety to the people. We have to considerably tone up the safety measures at every front. To deal effectively with increasing cybercrimes, many states have constituted special information technology (SIT) cadre comprising recruits with engineering, science and technology degrees. This is on account of the massive jump in cybercrimes in recent years. In the past few years, through curriculum changes, cybercrime investigation and forensic have been included in training modules at the Police Academy and police training colleges. The CID also imparts special training to cops on the subject. Individuals should live with the realization that they can become susceptible to threats at any time and should make behavioural adjustments to grapple with it such as not sharing the internet password, bank details, etc. Corporations should build strong firewalls around them to protect their data and confidential records. Our preventive systems should be strong and foolproof and state-of-theart gadgets, equipment and concepts should be deployed. The government should build a highly dedicated, cyber-educated and computer-savvy police force to deal with the cybercrimes. We have a tendency to wake up once the atrocities have happened. That reactive syndrome has to be shunned. A foolproof surveillance system should be put in place as a proactive measure to prevent cybercrimes. That way, we can have many cities in the Economist Safety Index, up in their rankings, in the years to come. n

FACE TO FACE
IT Infrastructure and Data Protection should go hand in hand In an era of exponential data growth, data plays a major role for any organization and sometimes even helps in decision making. But organizations are more concerned about adoption of IT infrastructure rather than investing on adoption of technologies to prevent data loss.
I
ndia is one of the countries where data volumes are growing exponentially, through increasing business process automation, fast-evolving regulatory norms and adoption of mobility and social platforms for business computing. Data protection has been a key focus area for enterprises, as information is fast becoming the most precious asset for any organization, and is often the critical business differentiator. As per the Data Protection Survey, 72 % of Indian organizations consider data protection to be totally critical to their success. Yet, over half are not very confident that they can fully recover after a disruption. In India, data loss and downtime costs
Some of the recommendations made by EMC are: • Make sure there is an appropriate data protection solution in place for all critical data no matter where it is or how it is generated • Manage an integrated data protection strategy and maintain a level of visibility and control for application owners • Evaluate the gaps in protection strategy that may emerge from disparate vendor solutions • Match the data protection approach with the availability and protection requirements for tiers of applications/ data • Understand who “owns” data protection, especially in the cloud enterprises over US$54 billion. In India, organizations spend about 10 % of their total IT spend on data protection every year. The manufacturing sector spends the most on data protection – about 10.08 %, while telecom media and entertainment sectors spend the least – 7.68 %. Organizations employing more than 5,000 employees spend the most on data protection (about 11 %) and closeto 70 % have suffered disruptions in the last twelve months. Lack of awareness “The Increasing use of IT infrastructure by Indian enterprises to enhance productivity and expand operations in a competitive environment has led to growing security risks such as loss of critical data. Though enterprises have been sanguine on investing heavily in building their IT infrastructure for end-to-end efficient operations, adoption of
26

technologies to prevent or detect data loss has been abysmally low due to lack of awareness or seriousness over the implications of the risk,” said Surajit Sen, Country Manager, Data Protection & Availability Division, EMC. EMC’s Global Data Protection Index, a survey which was conducted by a market research firm, Vanson Bourne, reported that companies worldwide lost 400 % more data on average over the last two years that is equivalent to 24 million emails each year. This index further goes to show that a third of Indian enterprises are not prepared at all for unpredictable workloads that demand information availability in real time. Not surprisingly, 38 % of Indian respondents have already suffered unplanned downtime and 52 % have suffered data loss. This unplanned downtime has resulted in a monetary loss of US$34.3 billion to Indian enterprises in the last 12 months, and data loss resulted in Indian respondents losing US$20.7 billion. Emergence of SMAC and Data safety Big data, hybrid cloud, mobile and other business trends create new challenges and a recent study by EMC shows that in many cases organizations are not prepared. For example, only 6 % of the respondents said they have a disaster recovery plan for incidents related to big data, hybrid cloud and mobile. Just over half of businesses don't have a recovery plan for any of these emerging workloads, and 62 % of the respondents consider these environments difficult to protect. This evolution is challenging the ability of existing security paradigms and current security capabilities to address business critical risks. With data protection technologies evolving in parallel with challenges that are emerging, businesses in India will find it easier to protect themselves by staying abreast of these developments and thinking strategically about data protection. The EMC Data Protection Suite makes it easier than ever to access EMC's broad portfolio of backup, archive, and compliance software solutions. Like an “IT Survival Kit”, the Suite provides advantages for multiple types of users. It includes tier-based licensing options which are cost-effective and have been designed to simplify management and deployment. EMC's mandate is to ensure that it is equipped with the right vision and strategy to help businesses redefine how they see data protection for the new era with its product offerings. n aparna@varindia.com

City WiFi-Challenges
By Nishant Verma-Independent Infosec Consultant
A
re politicians jumping the gun when they make announcements that involve technical and legal complexities or they do their proper homework? SMART cities, free wifi, city surveillance - they ring jingles to ears, but what exactly they mean when it comes to implementation, perhaps politicians have little clue. Its not just the great idea but need of the hour to have the convenience of WiFi to stay connected anywhere and everywhere. But just as the availability of WiFi services increase, so does the number of security risks and hackers on the prowl to hunt. With little or no knowledge of best practices to use Internet the users are at risks, with little forensic capabilities the investigating agencies are handicapped and there are hardly any security compliances in India, so are we truly prepared for such projects? The hackers can setup fake wifi zones/hotspots and steal the sensitive personal content. With free wifi available, most users will prefer to connect to the 'Free WiFi' access point, which may possibly connect them to a hacker's fake access hub. Users who connect to these "free" networks are at huge risk of data loss and are susceptible to “Challenge attack”, which hackers use to capture usernames and passwords. Also there is little or perhaps no compliance requirements at the service provider level in case the user information is captured by the service provider, data leak can happen from there. Further, if it becomes free for all with user identity not being captured, terrorists can exploit the city wifi. Another risk is the launching of DDOS/DOS attack on the City Wifi network itself to bring the services down and make a political statement. Further not the least important concern is Inappropriate use of the wireless network, in particular access to obscene/Porn material or infringement of copyrighted works through Torrent or similar utilities peer to peer applications is a also a concern, and needs to be addressed, especially when the law is silent on many such issues. Hence there is urgent need for the governments to understand the risks and cover them adequately to venture in this space. One must deploy both procedural and technical controls when architecting the City Wifi. Define an Acceptable/Restricted Use Policy for the Network Service This policy sets of rules that define acceptable practices for use of the wireless network service and must clearly outline the consequences of violating the policy, this may require amendment to existing laws or creation of new law. This policy should be tied in with ISO 27001security policy. The following are common elements in an acceptable use policy: • Prohibited Uses • Responsibilities of users • Conditions for suspension or termination of the service • Privacy

Technical controls: Network security measures such as Content filters, firewalls, Web Antivirus solution, intrusion detection systems (IDS) / intrusion prevention systems (IPS), SIEM, Log management, NAC, rogue access point detection, and wireless IPS should be deployed to protect users from unauthorized network intrusion. Another consideration may be the need for a content filtering mechanism. Registration portal should capture the details of the user like name, address, mobile number or possibly authentication against AADHAR number so that the identity of the user on the network is known and no anonymous user is allowed to access the services of the city wifi. In addition, there has to be clearly defined incident response procedures. Despite everything the individual Internet user will continue to be the weakest link in the security chain hence there has to be education and awareness with tips for safe Internet surfing on continuous basis. The state may also get into purchase agreements with the endpoint security providers like Anti Virus and Data Encryption companies and provide those security software for the end users against a fee or free of charge as the policy may be. While it is encouraging to have the politicians moving forward and embracing technology but while if done rightly it can be a great step in building a SMART city but if done wrongly can be a big disaster and can not only impact the government and its credibility but can have huge impact on the users both financially and mentally. n

Panel Discussion on
"How Bhubaneswar could evolve and Transform into a Smart City"
Deepak Sahu, Chief editor – VARINDIA (inset) moderated the discussion and the panelists included (from Left to Right) Shri. M. N. Vidyashankar, PresidentIESA; Cmdr. J Jena, Director- TCOE; Shri B K Dash, Director of Industries-Govt. of Odisha; Mr. M V Vikram Kumar - Manager Regional Sales, Cisco Systems; Mr. Arun Kumar Dey, President- ITAO and Mr. A K Mohanty, MD - Tatwa Infotech In line with the Smart City program launched by the Government of India that aims to build 100 smart cities, VARINDIA organized a panel discussion that deliberated on how Bhubaneshwar can be transformed and evolve as a smart city. Shri. M. N. Vidyashankar, President- IESA opened up the discussion by briefly explaining that Bhubaneshwar can be eminently placed as a smart city but before that the problems that need to be tackled with have to be identified and then find them a solution. According to him, at least 3 of the very important sectors should be ICT-enabled. For instance an ambulance carrying a patient in a jam packed street can take help of an intelligent transportation system like in western countries. Here every ambulance will be equipped with a chip and 500 metres before the ambulance approaches a signal, it automatically will become green. Similar solutions can be thought of in areas of energy, water and healthcare. Cmdr. J Jena, Director- TCOE pointed out to a few issues that are fundamental to an urban living like making available potable water, smart sanitation system, efficient transportation and communication system, adequate Security & surveillance which will help a citizen make a smarter decision. Shri B K Dash, Director of Industries-Govt. of Odisha explains that the concept of Smart city can be seen in 2 ways – one is to have a smarter life and the other to provide smarter infrastructure to lead a smarter life. The role of MSME can be both in
rolling out and contributing to the world-class infrastructure of a smart city as also growing it. The only concern here is the investment, in the absence of which you cannot think of any innovativeness. The Govt. has to take pro-active steps to roll out these citizencentric services and maintain a synergy with the public. Throwing some light on the role played by technology in this area, Mr. M V Vikram Kumar - Manager Regional Sales, Cisco Systems said that building a Smart city should at the foremost enhance the quality of life of a citizen, they being able to access the smart services provided by the government in real time. Technology can enable in a big way to get these services delivered to the citizens and they in turn accessing them with the help of smart devices. However, if all these services are integrated together under one umbrella, the time taken to deliver these services will be much lesser. Mr. Arun Kumar Dey, President- ITAO observes that in a smart city there can be a lot of opportunity for an IT player, since everything has to be smart right from Healthcare, infrastructure, Transportation to water and Energy. There also has to be some

During the Q & A Session citizen friendly policies and strategies on the part of the government in order to make the Smart city concept a success. Mr. A K Mohanty, MD - Tatwa Infotech feels that for a city to become smart, it should be wi-fi enabled and secondly there should be uninterrupted power supply. Data would play a big role here as every element within it will be connected to each other. However, to realize the dream of a smart city, there are still lots of things to do and lot of opportunities to tap. The discussion thus concluded that while creating technologicallyconnected urban spaces is vital for India to realize its potential in the twenty first century, it is also vital that the Nation’s Smart Cities are able to withstand challenges of the twenty first century. Technically smart cities should learn to self-heal, recovering quickly from the stresses and shocks with minimal disruptions to life, livelihoods and economy. n

IBM renews Mainframes with the launch of z13 With the advent of PCs, the general perception was that it would spell a death knell for mainframes. However, it is far from the truth. The mainframes continue to maintain a steady growth rate. In the current scenario, with organizations increasing their spend on storage solutions, there is a trend which indicates that mainframes may gain a bigger share in the IT budgets of CIOs. – An excerpt from an interview with Viswanath Ramaswamy, Country Leader – Server Solutions (POWER & Mainframe), IBM India (P) Limited

real-time information from each business transaction. This requires having the business transaction, the operational data and analytics at the same place, at the same time and then be able to repeat this for every transaction each consumer is making. “Only the mainframe brings all these attributes together,” asserts Viswanath Ramaswamy, Country Leader – Server Solutions (POWER & Mainframe), IBM India (P) Limited. “The system is able to process 2.5 billion transactions a day, which are persistent, protected and auditable from end to end, adding assurance as mobile transactions grow,” he adds. It also makes practical realtime encryption of all mobile transactions at any scale. z13 is the world’s fastest processor and sports 300-per cent more memory and 100per cent more bandwidth. The mainframe will also be able to analyze transactions in
real time through a technology called Vector Analytics. This intelligent feature can help guarantee the ability of the client to run realtime fraud detection on 100 per cent of their business transactions by delivering “on-thefly” analytic insights that are 17X faster than competitive systems at a fraction of the cost. However, data security remains one of the top priorities of mainframe clients, including financial services, communications services, automotives, hospitals, universities and governments. “The new z13 has hundreds of security patents pending (or patents delivered). There are 500 patents for the new mainframe and many are security related. One of the most notable patents includes Crypto Express 5s, which doubles the speed that transactions are encrypted and manages the increased security demands of mobile transactions,” concludes Viswanath Ramaswamy. n
IBM has recently announced the z13 which is credited to be one of the most sophisticated computer systems ever built to deliver scale and economy together with real-time encryption and analytics to help meet the expectations of consumers. IBM has invested over 5 years in building this giant of a mainframe, keeping mobility in mind. FACE TO FACE
UTStarcom enhancing its Indian base The telecom industry in India is at the cusp of a transition that is unlike anything ever seen before. Today, there is an urgent need for creating a superior Indian digital highway. UTStarcom with its robust portfolio of advanced yet affordable telecom infrastructure solutions is ready to support this cause. William Wong, CEO & Director, UTStarcom, talks to VARINDIA as to how the company perceives the Indian market
U
TStarcom has been in India since 2001. The market has always been an important part of its business globally and historically India accounts for one-third of UTSTarcom’s overall global business. “We are a global telecom equipment provider and so we specifically target operators we believe are in good strategic regions and are positioned for strong growth. This year, we have identified three key markets that will be the focus for the company – first and foremost is India, then is Japan where we have historically been very strong and will continue to be a dominant player and the third is United States,” says a jubilant William Wong, CEO & Director, UTStarcom. UTStarcom and India… Why UT has chosen India is due to the fact that for the last 6–9 months the company has seen a tremendous change in the business environment. In some ways, it has been a lot more conducive for doing business. At the same time, a number of other factors are coming together for India to start the major take-off of becoming a dominant player. “We now see the momentum in the new government initiatives, namely the NoFN, Smart City and the Digital India programs. It fits into exactly where UTStarcom is working. It is our belief that we can bring our global experience and expertise into a market where we have had a good penetration. We have 35% share of the broadband market in India and we look forward to leveraging the opportunities to ride with the growth we are seeing,” Wong assures. The one most important area which UT believes will bring in a lot of revolution is SDN, something which the company has been working on for two years. Its principle is simple – to provide simple network and operations. In addition, India has a very strong software industry. According to Wong, “SDN will play a major role into that as well. Since the future of networking relies more on software, it is trying to make it very simple by extracting a lot of intelligence from the network into software. It makes it very easily configurable and that being the case, the ability to configure the network for deployment of a lot of new services would also be simpler. There is a lot of requirement coming in from network infrastructure. We have already deployed a few POCs (Proof of Concepts) and the solution is ready which we have utilized it in Japan. In India we see a very unique opportunity for the fact that NoFN is all about creating the infrastructure and we are looking at providing the best affordable connectivity for building a very extensive architecture of networking elements that will support this infrastructure,” Wong says. This will also play very well into the Smart City program. UT would be entering into a lot of new services involving a smart city that it has never thought of before, whether it is e-govt, e-education, e-energy or so on. While the company is moving from hardware to software, it is also looking at some of the low-cost boxes. Hence supporting the Make-in-India initiative, UTStarcom is also exploring the possibilities of building its own units along the line. “That is the area we are considering at the moment and so are toying with different plans at this point of time,” Wong says. UTStarcom – Then and now… Historically, UTStarcom has been an infrastructure company shipping hardware boxes, but two years ago it has embarked on the SDN architecture. Regionally, it was aimed at a lot of developed countries from where they started this initiative. “We are migrating and you will see us more in play in software products and services. We want to stay one step ahead of the demands coming from the customers,” Wong says. Talking about IPTV, UT has transformed it and has deployed it across the globe. The response has been strong and the company is anticipating the same here in India. “After NoFN is deployed, a lot of video services and video on demand will come significantly. Video is going to be the key driver for broadband in the coming times,” Wong observes. Carrier-grade Wi-Fi is another area which forms one of its strong suites. Remarkably, it has deployed two years ago half a million hotspots in Japan. Besides providing multiple benefits to customers, the foremost is the network coverage. It also tries to bring in a lot of economic benefits to the operator and subsequently to the end-users as well. “This is how we see UTStarcom could play from the software, hardware boxes, wireline and wireless solutions that we provide in the Indian market,” sums up Wong. This, he feels, will be a perfect fit for the NoFN program and the other initiatives that India is eyeing at present. And this is where UTStarcom sees its starting point.

“We are building capabilities in the software area now”
Amidst all the meetings and appointments, we also happened to meet with Shalin Shah, Co-GM, India Operation, UTStarcom, who shared several insights about the Indian market “UTStarcom is very actively monitoring the Indian market. So, on the one hand, while it is working on the deployment of broadband infrastructure, on the other it will be bringing in video services. For the time being, SDN and NoFN will be keeping UT very busy, but as soon as it sees a better broadband environment, the company will start actively positioning its Internet TV services. This will be its proposition to the partners and customers in India. “We have the # 1 market share in India when we talk of IPTV. We have customers like Bharti Airtel with whom we have positioned our IPTV products. We have been in dialogue with operators to find out how broadband can be a success and this eventually helps us to position our video services,” says Shalin Shah, Co-GM, India Operation, UTStarcom. UT has done deployments with 400,000 subscribers across the world in places like Thailand, Columbia, Mexico and the UK and so on. Since its technology has been there for two years, UT has been doing a lot of refinement and innovativeness along the line. It has been working with almost every service provider in India and has been in discussions with them for a lot of things like SDN and more particularly the Carrier-grade Wi-fi. In the SDN area too, UT is going to look for partnerships with a lot of small software players. However, UT’s transformation from hardware to a software player is necessitated by the general trend that is seen globally. “We see major vendors coming up with data centers and critical operations and functionalities moving up on to the cloud. We see the same thing happening in the telecom industry too. We have been pushing boxes all these while, but now we are building our capabilities and efforts in the software area. As reiterated earlier, software is becoming very crucial in the overall system. We have been doing a lot in the Network Function Virtualization area and have extracted a lot of those expertises into software,” shares Shalin. UT is excited about the Indian market and has been able to support a large number of tier-1 customers. Reliance, BSNL and Airtel are some of its tier-1 customers, while small cable operators serve as its tier-2 customers. Its major focus hence will be on the tier-1 and -2 customers not only in India but across the globe. “The telecom sector has gone through many ups and downs, but our experience in this market is going to be the key in keeping UT ahead of the competition. As the market develops and customization is needed, we might also plan to have our R&D unit here,” says Shalin. There is, indeed, a strong reinforcement coming from its customers for its India strategy.
Rahul Pandey, Director – Sales & Marketing, SAARC “We have outlined our roadmap for the Indian telecom industry. We are dedicated to develop technology that will serve the rapidly-growing demand in the market for bandwidth from Cloud-based services, mobile, streaming and other applications. The company aims to contribute towards the changes and development in the telecom industry and provide pertinent infrastructure support to telecommunication carriers for proficiently servicing the speedily growing demand of an advanced ‘Indian Digital Highway’.”
New plans to support government initiatives
UTStarcom has underlined the company’s plans to support government initiatives like Smart Cities, NOFN and Wi-Fi deployments with UTStarcom advanced telecom products and technologies and has announced the aggressive strategy on Carrier Wi-Fi solutions. “We are closely following various initiatives of the Government of India, including the Smart City, the optical NOFN Program deployment plans and Public Wi-Fi deployments. We work with Indian telecom operators, system integrators and the government, and we plan to extend our efforts significantly in the year 2015 in order to make sure that our products and solutions are the best answer to the needs of the government initiatives. UTStarcom is ready with our transport, aggregation and access networking solutions that may fit into virtually any area of the government initiatives in the telecom area, providing an efficient and reliable access and transport telecom infrastructure throughout India,” said William Wong, CEO & Director, UTStarcom. Speaking on the opportunities in Carrier Wi-Fi business, Shalin Shah, Co-GM, India Operation, UTStarcom, said, “Wi-Fi has been demonstrating a continuous growth since 2007. Wi-Fi equipment market is expected to reach $3.9 billion by 2017. With the tremendous growth in mobile traffic, smartphone consumer base and strapping internet penetration, Wi-Fi is going to play an increasingly important role in the future telecom industry. We are going to proactively promote and educate the market about our Carrier Wi-Fi product line about its unique combination of features and benefits that it offers. We plan to work closely with major telecom operators, system integrators and the government. We will also evaluate opportunities in the enterprise market in India.” The importance of a Carrier-class Wi-Fi solution for the market was emphasized. This technology is going to help operators provide wider broadband coverage, higher data rates and better overall user experience to their customers using cost-effective and easy-to-deploy infrastructure based on licence-free spectrum.

“HD” – The Future of Surveillance
Keeping in mind the recent security scenario of the country, surveillance has become the need of the hour. Security has become a major concern for SMEs, shops, residential complexes and large companies. The government, in general, has been the biggest segment in terms of volume demand. PSUs are also the major verticals with significant demand. Discussing the security concerns of the segment, trends and challenges of the Indian security market, Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech Ltd, has revealed the strategy and future roadmap of the company. Trends In the last few years, technological advancement in video surveillance has helped in shaping the industry. Consistent with the ongoing demand from heightened security needs, the video security market continues to experience a technology transition from relatively passive analogue CCTV video systems to more sophisticated networkbased IP video solutions that include integrated analytics. The Indian security market is adopting the latest technology as and when introduced. Today, market exists for all segments and new solutions like digital, which offer several advantages outweigh factors like cost, etc. “In sync with the global market trends, CP Plus foresees that IP technology, integrated solutions and cloud storage may drive the future markets driven by continuous technological enhancements, such as Storage Area Network (IP SAN) for storage, scalability, video analytics, face recognition and so on,” said Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech Ltd. Challenges and Strategy The key challenges that are hindering the growth of Indian security market are standardization of process, product and monitoring. There is no single strategic approach to central monitoring or regulatory framework for the industry and the operation and the ownership of CCTV systems continue to evolve and change without a national guiding strategy. “Markets run on the principle that only the best survives, no exception. CP PLUS understands the obvious need of HD, which is the future,” said Dutta. “The products are released in the market after an in-depth market research and inputs after thorough testing. They cater to their niche markets. There is always a scope for all the brands in the market and CP PLUS has established a unique positioning with their complete and competitive product portfolio,” he added. The market offers opportunities to channels at various levels – transition, upgrades, customization, and value added to an existing system. With an effective customer feedback mechanism, education, training and service framework in place, it is both affordable and accessible to realize the potential.

Phablets - The newest form factor of the Market In a recent report released by Counterpoint Research, Lenovo has positioned itself among the top five smartphone device makers in India with a market share of 4.7 % in the October-December 2014 quarter. India being the third-largest smartphone market in the world, Lenovo faces a stiff competition, but it is because of its product innovation, vast and varied choices and enhanced value that have kept the brand maintain its position in the top layer. In a chat with VARINDIA, Sudhin Mathur, Director, Smartphones, Lenovo India, discusses the challenges and the growing popularity of phablets which is affecting shipment of tablets.
Smart device market in India The concept of Phablets has picked up in India significantly. Consumers nowadays enjoy bigger screen devices. This helps in a better media consumption experience. Phablets offer tablet-like display added to the functionality of a phone. There has been a dip in the number of tablets being shipped to India which is a clear indication of its declining popularity. The popularity of phablets in the range of screen size 5–7 inches is soaring. This is definitely the future trend since media consumption on phones has increased remarkably amongst consumers.
the smartphone maker has entered the market with a wide variety of devices. The product range also includes affordable budget devices. It is due to constant product innovation, wider choices and enhanced value that have helped the brand to earn an important position in the Indian market. Lenovo also aims to strengthen its position in the market through innovative products. It also places emphasis on its reach to customers and
Challenges India is a price-sensitive country and people are inclined towards low-cost smartphones. But providing a low-cost smartphone is challenging because there are significant investments that go into it. It is important to balance out the consumer expectation vs the features that are provided. If there are no economies of scale, it is difficult to provide low-cost smartphones. Lenovo has come up with different design smartphones with Vibe series, especially the Vibe X2 which is a one-ofits-kind layered smartphone. As the first layered smartphone, it not only has an eye-catching design but also has solid specifications. Apart from this, Lenovo has also come up with affordable smartphones to increase the customer’s reach.
