remove the 'Policy Paralysis' and accelerate reforms on priority basis with focus on growth-oriented governance. It should work towards removal of inter-state trade, taxation and travel barriers across states for holistic development of the various regions and also expedite implementation of GST.” In the corporate presentation section, corporates Dell, Fortinet and Axis Communications participated and spoke about their latest solutions and products.

Speaking on connected security, Deepak Batra, Sr. marketing head, Dell software Group gave an insight about the trends that are driving IT, on Dell’s security point of view and how it is going to delivering on its promise of connected security. Sharing a brief of what Fortinet has been doing in IT security, Parikshit Gangaher, Regional Manager-North, Fortinet Inc discussed about some of its solutions that customers have been using for a while and its performance. Mr. Vintcy Kwatra, Dist. Account Manager, Axis Communications presented several videos to the audience to showcase its diferent surveillance cameras and video solutions and the technologies used in it.

The unveiling of the third edition of the Brand Book was the most exciting and awaited phase of the event. The unveiling was done by the Honorable Chief Guest Dr. B. K GAIROLA Director, Mission NeGP, Government of India in the presence of other revered guests.

The panel discussion towards the end of the event touched on the topic of

‘Emerging Trends in Cyber Security and I Governance’ and was moderated by Mr. Rameesh Kailasam, Sr.Director- APCO Worldwide. The participatory speakers in the discussion were Dr. Harold D’Costa, Cyber Expert-Law enforcement agencies; Mr. Ashish Kapahi, Regional Director – APAC, DISTREE; Mr. K Mohan Raja- GGM-Railtel Corporation of India; Col. H.P.S. Bawa CEO,Webel Technology LTD; Mr. Aneesh Dhawan, Regional Sales Head, VMware India Introduction and Mr. Mukul Mathur, Director – Channel &Marketing, IBM. Like every other year, the awards for Most Trusted Companies and Brand of Excellence have been given away to 11 corporates based on the votes casted on the company’s website.

EXPERTS VIEW Mr. Vinit Goenka, National Co-convener, BJP’s Information Technology (IT) Cell shared with the audience how the newly elected NDA leadership is steering its eforts to understand the pain areas and take possible actions, “My party and my govt., both are serious about changing what was happening here. I am here to understand from you what you want us to do and how we can lead the course of this country. My role in the party is to listen, collate and forward these issues, suggestions to the top leadership. IT has an impact on any industry or business, irrespective of sectors. A small investment by the govt. in terms of policy can result into huge returns.”

Shri Savitur Prasad, Principal Integrated Financial Adviser (Army) - Govt. of India talked about transparency in the system and how it is facilitated by the use of Social Media, “There are challenges that cripple the govt. Products manufactured outside are being sold at cheaper rates inside the country. Even the Ministry of Commerce, instead of giving an impetus to manufacturing in the country is accepting these products and is distributing them in diferent ministries. This is a huge loss to the country as well as to those unemployed youths who are left jobless because of such a policy on the part of the govt. If the govt. buys something, it should bear the tag of ‘Made in India.”

Mr. Vipin Tyagi, Director -C DOT, Government of India talked about some myths that is loating around in the broadband industry, “Broadband is in the initial stage of penetration. TRAI report points out the total no. of broadband subscribers at 16 million but if we include mobile, the number goes up to 156 million. Even today against the world average download speed of 15.1 MB, the download speed monitored on a real-time basis is only 5.1 MB in India. Infrastructure is yet to be built up in India. A European study says that 90% of investment is still to happen.

Still, I am hopeful that we will grow at par with other nations as we have that potential and infrastructure.”

Touching on sustainable development, Dr. B. K GAIROLA Director, Mission NeGP, Government of India said, “Technology is good as long as it is used for common man. We get broadband today but the question is if it is equitably distributed or available to everybody in the country. The answer is no and there is no hope that we will get it. Mr. Modi has got only one element in his agenda and that is development. But this development has to be coupled with sustainable development if we think of it for the long run. There are 3 pillars on which we work for sustainable development – Economic growth, sustainable inclusion and environmental balance. If we look at all the 3 components, every country is now working on a National Broadband policy. Broadband today is considered as a Right just like food or Air. When international agencies talk about broadband, they assume education will help in improving and developing it further.”

he panel discussion on ‘Emerging Trends on Cyber Security and I Governance’ emphasized on the need for Cyber Security across businesses, enterprises and govt. where more and more adoption of technology is happening. Critical infrastructure is one area where focus is increasing, whether it is physical assets or digital assets and so is the risk of security rising with this focus. For some it also means critical data belonging to citizens and nations. The panelists gave their individual insights on each of these areas.

Mr. Mukul Mathur, Director – Channel & Marketing, IBM looks at security from an enterprise perspective. “It is not just a man saying that I have a good digestive system and so I am healthy. But rather security is about looking into all dimensions – basic level infrastructure, data security, applications and lastly people. Because even the weakest link can expose an enterprise or the govt., it is more than important to look into all these perspectives while considering cyber security.”

According to Col. H.P.S. Bawa, the two things he has found while procuring IT systems in the govt. is that it is not always that they get the best products which also start wearing after sometime. The second is whenever any IT infrastructure is introduced in the govt., the people using them are not trained well and the vulnerability of the system increases from that side.

Mr. Aneesh Dhawan, Regional Sales Head, VMware recalled that the basic deinition of how security is deployed is changing. “When we look at cyber security, many would deine it in their own terms but when we see how the information is getting dispersed and how it is getting consumed, we come to two basic points – one is data center and the access points from where we access these informations. The deployment of security is changing and it varies from organization to organization. For instance, we talk of cloud infrastructure, whether it is public, private or hybrid, but we don’t have physical boundaries that we can deine to ensure complete security.”

Mr. Ashish Kapahi, Regional Director, Distree pointed out the core issue of Cyber Security, which is the infrastructure. “Unfortunately, in India we do not have any control over the core infrastructure or critical internet resources, which is the basis of cyber security. Whether it is the route servers or IP addressing, We have none of them under the control of govt. today. There are issues around which questions have been raised for the last many years. One such issue is that without the consent of the govt. a domain name can be created and can be brought down unilaterally by any private party or any governmental organization. So these details need to be checked."

Mr. K Mohan Raja, GGM, Railtel pointed out to the challenge of credibility that IT professionals face. “Do we have the matrix to measure what is security, what is the budget to prevent this and how efectively we can do it? With a plethora of products available, there are a good number of people who want to beat the system. The user behavior and expectations have changed so much that people will continue with social networking and online ticketing. Are we going to make incremental improvements so that these problems are contained?"

Dr. Harold D'Costa delved more into the law enforcement part to make his point. “As far as the technology is concerned, are the systems conigured to the laws of the land? If technologies are replaced, is there any procedure through which if any frauds take place, we can gather evidence which is admissible in the court of law. Most of the time cyber crimes take place left and right, but the registration or converting it into an FIR is almost low but the conviction rate is absolutely bigger.”

Major Takeaways from the discussion….

C

yber Threats, despite receiving experts’attention at major Security Forums across the world has remained a perennial burning issue to IT Security professionals, with very few steps taken as an organizational measure to contain it. India is not safe either from these cyber attacks as cyber security attacks are global in nature. Experts believe that the Indian cyberspace must be protected on a priority basis. This would not be an easy task as the new government has received a paralyzed cyber security infrastructure in India in heritage. Further, cyber security skills development is also missing in India and we do not have the appropriate cyber professionals to deal with sophisticated cyber attacks.

However, the panelists at the VARINDIA IT Forum tried to initiate a conclusive discussion to understand the complexities of Information Security in

the country and what further can be done to realize its true potential, of whether one can switch to a damage-control mode of when hit by a data breach and what will that mode be. The few takeaways from the discussion are · There has been a paradigm shift on how dynamic security is today getting deployed in the services offered in datacenters. This is where service providers are getting concerned of how to secure these services and can give the flexibility and choice to consumers of consuming these applications and services at any place and time using any device, while still maintaining the control and compliance on the services delivered · A cyber security policy without taking into consideration the core IT infrastructure is of no use. Whatever policies are devised, they have to be inclusive of a National Security policy.

And unless there is one, any policy or silos will be of no use to the nation as a whole · Earlier Security was looked at as just a detection of an intrusion and responding at the slightest breach. But the landscape is now moving to not just detect and respond but also predict such security threats. It is how a particular security can predict by looking at patterns of usage, or by looking at potential breaches that took place so that there are appropriate actions taken to prevent it further · Lack of awareness, nonimplementation of policies though still in place, law enforcement bodies not taking the issue wisely or seriously, misuse of Social networking sites, inability of coders to actually code securely are some of the reasons that need to be looked upon to prevent its spread. n samrita@varindia.com
