HELLO INDIA

The rupee will become strong with this historic reform

There is absolutely no doubt that India will write a new chapter in the history books about how a country and its people can rise to big challenges. I congratulate the Government’s move to demonetise Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes, but at the same time with such an important step taken, there is need to move away from a shadow economy to an even more transparent economy. Digital transactions will now rise dramatically. In the next several years, India will become the most digitised economy, not just by size but by percentages. A more concerted shift to digital transactions will further enhance transparency and reduce leakage. India has all the pieces in place for a compelling vision for digital financial inclusion. The increasing convergence of the technological and physical worlds will expand the security challenges globally and organizations will feel the long-term implications of this new digital ecosystem. It is the biggest reform which no one expected and will have a huge impact on people who have hoarded money and not disclosed money for tax purposes, and this will give a big push to a digital and cashless economy. As people face shortage of notes, they prefer to go online with their transactions and payments. From everyday groceries to taxi fares, digital payments have gone up in every sector. This movement will push the electronics transactions to grow multifold like (10x to 50x, when it comes to digital payments). The rise in digital transactions will lead to a digital exhaust where better credit risk scoring will happen, catapulting in exponential growth. Expert says, we might have taken 20 years to transact digitally, but the next wave of growth and adoption will happen in the next two to three years and the bulk will come from the 500 million mobile users in the country. Secondly, the growth of e-payment systems is increasing its popularity due to the widespread use of the Internet-based shopping and banking. The number of private and corporate transactions that are done electronically is growing rapidly. Malicious applications targeting online banking transactions have also increased dramatically in the past few years. The massive growth of electronic transactions is likely to witness a growing number of risks in the months to come. There is an immediate need for banks to get proactive about information security and beef up their IT infrastructure against potential cyber attacks. Organizations think they get inherent security just by migrating to the cloud. But moving data off-site does not absolve organizations of their responsibility to secure it and best practices still matter. Going forward, if Rs.2,000 notes are limited in supply, will they command a premium? Exciting times ahead!

HPE’s Go to Market Strategy is Channel

…….. Leading with a Strong Partner Ready Program

Neeraj Sharma, Vice President for Channel, SMB and Service Providers, Asia Pacific and Japan, Hewlett Packard Enterprise in a chat with VARINDIA shares his thoughts on HPE’s transformational journey after the demerger and how it is serving its partners from a business perspective Where HPE’s transformation journey is concerned, will there be a lot of changes in the strategies? What is the current strategy for the channel? Let me start with the high level strategy. At Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), we firmly believe that hybrid IT will win, and that there is a great opportunity around IoT (Internet of Things) solutions, including computing at the edge and campus networking. We have a great set of services that wrap around these infrastructure and IoT offerings. From a channel point of view, it is core to everything that we do in HPE, so it is essential for our go to market strategy, even as the market transforms and changes. Consumption and service models are changing. Customers are buying products differently. Some of them buy and some of them resell; some of them buy solutions and some of them are even buying cloud services. So we want to make sure that we help our partners transform accordingly, through a channel model that helps them stay ahead of their customers’ transformation journeys. Our HPE Partner Ready Program focuses on 3 areas – on creating demand jointly with our partners; on making sure that we enable our partners as the transformation journey happens; and most importantly, we also make sure that we compensate them right. The partners have been asking us - while we sell infrastructure, will you enable us to support customers that want to buy as a monthly rental or as flexible capacity? In response, we developed this Partner Ready Service Provider Program that we are enabling with some of our partners in India and other parts of Asia Pacific. HPE wants to listen to its partners so there is an advisory board in Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) which is called EPAC (Enterprise Partner Advisory Council). It includes 25 APJ partners, of which 3-4 are from India. The senior most executives of HPE get together with the senior most partner executives, and we brainstorm, give them our insight and strategy, and then they go to market. We will take the EPAC format and replicate that with 10-12 partners in India. How is the merging of server and storage business helping HPE? Combining the server and storage teams under the Datacenter Hybrid Cloud Group, along with datacenter networking, gives us more synergy as new buying patterns emerge and hybrid IT is winning in the marketplace. Essentially this will help us make sure that we are more integrated in our solution offerings. So we have got networking at the edge which gives us strong campus and mobility solutions and at the core we have servers, storage and datacenter networking. Whatever is in the datacenter from a networking perspective comes in this group. We have a very good and well-knit sales and channel team. Some of the large accounts are led by AGMs (Account General Manager) and there is an ecosystem around them. Our systems really drive consolidation at the AGM level. At the backend, we are also geared to provide integrated solutions. How is HPE looking at the growth of Datacenter market? In the datacenter business, HPE witnesses a lot of opportunity as

12

www.varindia.com

Neeraj Sharma VP, Channel, SMB & Service Providers, Asia Pacific & Japan, Hewlett Packard Enterprise the infrastructure transforms. HPE is working on software defined datacenters, the services around them, and we also have a solution called Flexible Capacity services, which enables us to provide datacenter services in a way that helps customers in terms of the flexibility that they need in business economics. Additional opportunities include Make in India, digital transformation – which is taking place rapidly – and also the 100 Smart Cities initiative. Smart cities are becoming a reality; the infrastructure tenders are coming out. In next 18 months we are expecting significant number of new tenders. A lot of the work that HPE is doing around smart cities is in India. We are now working on tying the ecosystems together. We have campus solutions around Aruba and our location services; we have a strong advantage having worked with governments on multiple HPE Future Cities projects around the world. We have been the legacy leader in India in the server marketplace, and have also been the leader globally for a long time with significantly large percentage share. So this will play a role. What has been the after-effect of demerger among partners? The partners are really happy because some of the large partners who thought that we would take deals from them through services are much more open to us today. In the case of Software, we have kept the core software assets of software defined datacenters and Helion cloud stack with us. We have kept the core values with us. The partner community has liked the fact that we are clear in the go to market. n

CHANNEL CHIEF

Ingram Micro Cloud Offers Digital Transformation with Confidence In an exclusive interaction with VARINDIA, Jaishankar spoke on Ingram Micro Cloud Marketplace, a leading automated cloud services aggregation platform that allows Resellers, partners and SME customers to purchase, provision, manage, and invoice cloud services from multiple vendors with confidence and ease. The portfolio of cloud services available on Ingram Micro Cloud is constantly being enhanced; more recentlyMicrosoft Azure has been added to Ingram Micro cloud. Partners can now offer Azure in a flexible consumptionbased, pay-as-you-go pricing model through the Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program. The Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider program empowers resellers to fully own the end-customer relationship. This enables them to manage the end-to-end subscription lifecycle which helps ensure greater customer satisfaction, higher renewal margins and top line cloud revenue. Ingram Micro Cloud allows resellers to quickly bring the Azure suite to a wider client base by accelerating time-tomarket and eliminating operational complexities. Resellers can also easily differentiate their offerings by bundling their own services with Azure and other Microsoft cloud solutions including Office 365 for greater upsell and crosssell potential. Cloud Marketplace With Ingram Micro Cloud, our partners can provide an choice of world class SAAS and IAAS solutions to their customers as they look at transforming their consumption models from on-premise to the cloud Today, Ingram Micro is the leading cloud marketplace and aggregation platform. The marketplace is deployed globally across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The number of solutions that are available on Ingram Micro Cloud is being constantly enhanced as more and more vendors integrate their cloud solutions on to our marketplace Market acceptability for cloud The cloud business is among our faster growing businesses. We are seeing quarter on quarter growth. I expect it to become a significant part of our overall business in a few years time. Growth of Distribution Market There is tremendous opportunity for growth in India. The PC penetration is very low and is at 8-10% in the country. The benefit that technology can bring to the common man is well known. For scaling business in India and getting more users to use technology, we have to work with industry leaders to enable compelling use cases at affordable prices and make them available across the length and breadth of the country. Ecommerce impacting Distribution business Ecommerce has not impacted our business because they buy from us. They are like another customer for distributors. Lot of people who are selling on the marketplace is ultimately our resellers. If the business is doing well in the marketplace

then they will buy more from us. The advantage is that online marketplace is providing is larger access of the products to the whole country, anybody who has access to internet can log in to online marketplace. So they are helping to grow and expand the market to some extent. Even in mature markets like US and China, online is not 100%. It is at the most 30-40%. In India it is hardly 10% currently. Ultimately the customer will decide who will succeed and there will always be a balance between online and offline. Government Initiatives Government initiatives like Digital India, Smart City etc will expand the market for IT vendors and distributors because the whole purpose of these projects is to enable more citizens to use either government services or have access to high quality infrastructure like broadband connectivity. As people will get comfortable to use technology, they will buy more PCs, printers, networking products etc. Vision With the channel ecosystem, we bring tremendous value to the brands. In a country like India, there is a very strong case for vendors to work with channels and distribution to take their products to the market in a cost effective manner. Channel partners are the most efficient route for addressing the large geography and the large SMB customer base that exists in India. ROUND ABOUT

Is there any limit to Information Technology? W

hat is the final frontier of information technology? Has it reached its peak? Going by the latest reports coming out from various corners of the world, the future of IT is a mixed bag of hopes, challenges, concerns and, if one can say so, of despair. Let us start off with the most optimistic assessment: the growth of the sector is seamless and no force on earth can stop its momentum upwards. Every incremental innovation is going to add value to the quality of life and technological excellence accumulated over the years. The other day, I read that 5G communication configuration will redefine how people work, think, indulge in entertainment and leisure of their choice and liking, how surgeries are conducted, etc. If the claims of Qualcom are to be believed, 5G will hit the market sometime in the middle of next year. While the details of the new technology are still wrapped up in mystery, Qualcom has put in the public domain how the new technology will get rolled out. It will be faster and swifter and can be deployed for a vast array of operations and manoeuverings, such as driverless cars, pilotless aircraft, robotic surgeries, equipping the mobile telephony with a number of complex and delicate tasks, including Internet of Things. Let us wait for the rollout of the wonder chip to make assessment of its impact. No one can deny the fact that technology is playing an important role in electioneering. In India, electioneering has become high-tech with every passing election. A new crop of industry has sprung up around the elections in India, besides the normal chorus of advertisements, public relations, speech writings, handbills, wayside speeches, by using electronic media to beam the eulogies of every political party. A hybrid of advertisements and news packages also had been surfaced known as paid news, though there are restrictions on printing and telecasting such news. But there are surrogate methods through which you can camouflage the paid news through crafty journalistic gimmicks. Why have Indian elections and political parties suddenly become techie savvy? I am not talking about the mobile telephony that transmits to every voter about candidates and political parties, what they have done and what others have not done. Some political parties in the coming elections in states like UP

16

November 2016

www.varindia.com

in election analytics and in predicting trends and swings. I am told a political party has appointed an agency to assess the mood of the electorate on a weekly basis. The agency has been tasked to find out the acceptability of a list of potential candidates based on the feedback from the people. How such exercise would help in winning elections is something one has to wait and see.

have created information superhighways, which attempt to break down the details of each constituency village/ municipal level, block level and so on. Such databases contain details, such as the number of voters, caste formation, predominant families and their areas of influence, schools, colleges, religious places, educational background of each voter with value-added information about their likely political leniency, how they can be influenced, profile of opinion makers and their outreach, what could be the pitch point to swing the votes and so on. One political party has engaged a foreign consultant as their campaign chief. Experts say, this has not happened earlier in India and predict that henceforth technology may become a differentiator in deciding the outcome. It is also important to see how information is collated. A good part of the assets and other endowments of the villages are drawn from published sources like data from the government sources, research outfits, think tanks, etc. A substantial chunk of the data collated are primary information collected with laborious efforts by employing scores of youngsters to go from household to household, shop to shop, etc. They say that such data can be extrapolated to find the swings and moods of the voters. What it portends is that the coming elections will be a warfare not necessarily based on decibels, demagogue and posters, but also aided by technology, brain power and subtle strategies. The use of technology does not end there. It can be of considerable help

This also can open up tremendous business opportunities, particularly in the IT domain. Creation of such a technology platform is not that simple. Having regard to the fact that we have several layers of elections, such as Parliament, assembly, municipal and panchayat and all these elections are keenly fought, one can very well imagine the type of business that the elections may garner in the future. Many such services can be outsourced to other countries, where elections are fought. Let us surmise the contemporaneous relevance of their findings to the information technology. We have to introspect how much IT is intruding into the privacy of individuals, groups and states. The word “hacking seems to have emerged as more potent than warfare. We are experiencing how great forces have succumbed to hacking. But there is the other side also, which some others call it as ethical hacking. Wikileaks is an example. Those who support such ethical hacking claim that such invasions into privacy do more good than harm to the society. Opinions differ. But still people who hold such opinion are in multitude. They point out the revelations of covert and overt operations which the Wikileaks have put on the public domain are most relevant and expose the underbelly of political and diplomatic manoeuvering. The paranoid created in the US elections because of hacking refuses to die even at the last hour of election, making a prediction hazardous. Public mood is changing by the minute. Not many months ago, the US has imposed a ban on import of digital technologies from China fearing presence of embedded spyware and malware and chips that can indulge in espionage without having easily noticed. The fear of hacking and manipulating the outcome will not let us to switch over to the system. That is the limit of information technology that I am talking about. I will be the happiest man if it does not happen since information technology is my bread and butter and technology is my enabler and benefactor.

15th Star Nite Awards – Setting new Benchmark in Indian ICT Industry

A sparkling award ceremony and a day-long session on CSR@ Disability in the presence of a host of glitterati’s from the ICT industry, PSUs, Government dignitaries from Ministries & agencies and other distinguished personalities comprising of System Integrators/Solution Partners, IT Associations, CIOs, CMO’s, distributors and VARs is how the annual event of Star Nite Awards unfolded this year. The 15th Star Nite Awards which was a resounding success was divided into 2 sessions – the Morning Session under the theme CSR @Disability that saw several rounds of discussions keeping CSR and Disability into focus and the Evening session themed Digital & GST Impact on Business Eco-system that primarily was an Awards evening, besides serving as a melting ground for the Indian ICT industry, meeting together to discuss the latest trends in ICT. Morning Session: CSR@Disability With the Government’s vision to transform India into knowledge economy and to spend the mandated 2% of their profits on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, SPO INDIA and NASSCOM Foundation are trying to bridge an alliance between the Industry and Government to discuss on CSR and Sustainable developmental goals and the role for the private sector in engaging with a development agenda. With this mind, the event CSR@Disability took place that aimed to address this issue at large. The event was covered in 2 sessions – the first session covered the theme CSR@

Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Hon’ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, GOI “Historically, it has been a tradition to do something good for the society, to work for its welfare in terms of both economic and social goodness. Though the term ‘CSR’ has been coined only recently, the emphasis fundamentally has always been to uplift the society; corporates earning huge profits contribute 1-2 % of its income to the betterment of the societal good. There are people who earmark this money for religious work too. Keeping this in mind, the government realised that government funds and subsidies are just not sufficient to work for social good. Unless this made into a law and urging every corporates to contribute 2% of profits towards this cause, CSR would never meet its objective November 2016 www.varindia.com 34 of serving the community and the society at large.”

Ms. G Latha Krishna Rao, IAS, Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment - GOI “We are talking about Corporate Social Responsibility very often but for a long time there has been a generous funding of the corporate sector towards several societal causes. They have done it on their own and that funding we are trying to formularizing it through CSR. I was going through the funding that the sector received from the corporates, but I think if we have a little respect for this sector that we should be doing more than what we have been doing. If you really want to do something then do a good job, other than doing it just to earn a mere name. Giving a very small portion of your corporate funds for a sector as vast as this, is not the only answer. They should open up more if they have the willingness to serve this sector." Mr. Avanish K Awasthi, Joint Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment – GOI “Vibrant Ability or Vibrant Inclusion is what the government should be talking about. ALIMCO has taken the first big step in addressing the disabilities and rehabilitating them. All across the country, 4500 camps have been organized to provide aids and devices to the disabilities. The idea is not just to give these at their doorstep; but it is to change the mindset of the people and the country towards the disabled population and bring them the motivation and change. The Honourable PM has been present individually in many of our programs, including his constituency Varanasi. The program held at Navsari gave away 11,000 devices to the disabled persons from the state. Gujarat should be a model state for all of us that in one stroke changed the way people look at this sector.”

Mr. D. R. And we are able to create some sensitization about the need for supporting the cause of disability. We have tried to associate in terms of skill development and providing aids & devices. There should be a awareness of what kind of appliances would suit a particular kind of disability. ALIMCO has been in this area of providing aids for disabled for the last 40 years and during this time we have built upon a large product portfolio and modernizing our activities. According to Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, a minimum of 6,000 Indian companies will be required to undertake CSR projects in order to comply with the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 with many companies undertaking these initiatives for the first time. Further, some estimates indicate that CSR commitments from companies can amount to as much as 20,000 crore INR. This combination of regulatory as well as societal pressure has meant that companies have to pursue their CSR activities more professionally.” There was also a panel discussion on the theme CSR @ Disability that was moderated

VARINDIA played host to the 15th Star Nite Awards 2016 (SNA) DNA of Channel that has during these years become a litmus test for IT corporates for their marketing policies, strategies and initiatives and for deciding the top performers of the year for their contribution in the field of ICT. This year’s event was focused on the theme: Digital & GST Impact on Business Eco-system. The evening commenced with the lamp lighting ceremony and was graced by the Chief Guest, Shri P.P Chaudhary, Ho’ble Minister of State, Law & Justice, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India. Other dignitaries who joined in the celebrations are Dr. Bibek Debroy, Member, NITI Aayog, Government of India; Shri S. N. Tripathy, IAS, A.S. and Development Commissioner, MSME, Government of India; Shri Vipin Tyagi, Executive Director, C-Dot, Government of India; Shri. Savitur Prasad, Addl. Ltd.; Mr. A L Jagannath, Director, Marketing-VMware Software India Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Sandip

Dr. Bibek Debroy, Member, NITI Aayog, Government of India “There are major challenges facing the education sector today. When we talk of education, everybody tends to focus only on higher education. But higher education is only one side of the coin. Education probably begins with school education. It expands primary education, secondary education, farther up vocational education and even higher education. Today if you look at school enrolment, across the country whatever be the state that we are talking about, we are getting children into schools. The number of students who have dropped out of school has dropped phenomenally in spite of having problems with drop-outs, retention and quality of education. The education sector is up for reform, but they do not happen only when they are supply-driven.”

Aurora, Director, Marketing – Intel India Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. L K Pathak, VP -Marketing & Corp. Communication-Sterlite Technologies and Mr Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, VARINDIA. Mr Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, VARINDIA started his keynote address by complementing the Indian talents and the impact that Indian entrepreneurs have had on Silicon Valley. “India’s start-ups “will disrupt the world” for sure. Experts predict that India - comprising 15% of the world population and with a growth rate of 7 to 8%, could be the second largest economy by 2030. The Government’s commitment for a digital economy as a major growth enabler is among the top priorities for the central and state government both and the opportunity seems very much promising.” The Tech Talk Session saw eminent speakers from the industry talk about emerging technology and the way industry is shaping up amidst its adoption. The idea of this tech talk is that, in five minutes elevator speech, a speaker needs to tell the audience on the present and future technologies that his respective company is endorsing. There were a multitude of topics capped, on which these leaders shared their ideas and concepts with the audience. The speakers who spoke during this session were Mr. Amit Jain, President

Shri P.P Chaudhary, Ho’ble Minister of State, Law & Justice, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India “We might not have been a witness to Industrial Revolution, but our young generation and even we would be able to see the country taking a leap to Digital India. The biggest challenge before India today is that of infrastructure because our 83 crore population reside in rural India. And today when there is a big Digital Divide, our Honourable PM is trying his best to bring India on the world map as a digital country. Once we reach around 2, 50,000 gram panchayats getting connecting through optical fibre or high speed internet and giving wi-fi connectivity to villagers, we would know that we have lived up to our aim.”

& CEO- Prysm Inc.; Mr. Vishal Dhupar, M.D, South Asia - NVIDIA India; Mr. K K Shetty- V.P. - Commscope India; Mr. Jaijit Bhattacharya, Partner, Infrastructure & Govt. services –KPMG; Mr. Rohit Oberoi, Director, marketing, Middle East- Seclore Technology and Mr. Vijayraj Rajit, Chairman- Qbitkloud. Going with the tradition of this flagship event, the gala awards ceremony which always is the most-awaited attraction of the evening took place amidst much celebrations and grandeur. The biggest names in the ICT industry have been named winners in 45 different categories that have been chosen on the basis of the feedback received from the VARs and channel partners from Metros, A, B and C class cities through an extensive electronic voting system. VARINDIA also took this opportunity to recognize the 15 CMOs from the Indian ICT industry. As another attraction of the event, CMOs gave a 60 Seconds elevator speech on their efforts, success and sharing their experience how they have transformed the business of their respective organizations and later these veterans came up on the stage and were felicitated with a token of appreciation. There was also a Lucky Draw contest organized by Seclore, Epson, Seagate and Fitbit in between the event where lucky winners walked away with exciting prizes.

Shri S. N. Tripathy, IAS, A.S. and Development Commissioner, MSME, Government of India “When we were talking about bottlenecks to make India digital, we were afraid of many things not falling into place. Today the entire eco-system is set – so how can Digital India be made successful? What is it that we expect from the government? We have used Digital in the Dept. of MSME and one scheme where we have used is a recent project that will give sufficient scope to the players in that industry. We have been promoting ICT among micro & small enterprises, and see in what ways they can use the digital platform. We are sure of 2 things – we are not going to support disruption but go for neutralization.”

Mr. Amit Jain President & CEO Prysm “I have learnt a very important thing from my mentor (my father) that how it is important to be hardworking and passionate with anything and everything you do. I carried this with me while relocating to USA; I always remained fearless as I moved from industry to industry building companies, especially in storage, then moving on to telecom, data communication, to displays and collaboration space. The potential in India and the growth story that is slowly unfolding kept bringing me back here. There are several trends witnessed in the IT industry and one of them is digital transformation and its impact on millennials and the second one is growth of mobility.”

Mr. Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director, Asia South - NVIDIA Graphics “What is the foundation of the Digital World? The invention of printing press, electricity, penicillin, Semi conductors and eye glasses has changed the existence of mankind for better. The IT & semiconductor industry by itself represents the entire economy of India. Today, 1 out of every 7 human being is using Facebook. That is hyper connectivity. In next 2 years, there will be 10 billion phones, with 77 billion applications uploaded on these devices. We will also be taking about 50 billion connections of internet objects and this is just 1% of the connections. Had it not been for the semi-conductor industry there would have been no internet, no smartphones and no connectivity.”

Mr. Krishnan Chatterjee, Head Marketing, India Subcontinent - SAP INDIA “As a marketer, I would like to say just one thing that the Digital wave is upon us and we cannot ignore it, come what may. I would like to share here the theory of the ‘Purple Cow’, conceptualised by American thinker Seth Godin. If you are driving down a lonely country road and if you see the most beautiful cow in the world, you will still keep driving. But if you happen to drive that same road and see the ugliest cow, the colour of which is purple, you will stop the car, take a snap and post it on Facebook for others to see. So in today’s world it is not important of how good you are, but it is about how remarkable you are.”

TECH TALK (Five minutes elevator speech)

Mr. K K Shetty, V.P. - Commscope India “Commscope was at one point of time was known as Tyco Electronics (before a portion of it was merged with it). We are a $ 5.5 billion company, primarily infrastructure, enterprise cabling and telecommunication business. In India we do a large amount of business in telecom and enterprise space. When we started business in 1984, we were in a dilemma whether we should start selling products first or begin with manufacturing our products. Then we figured out that we should start manufacturing first, build the required skill power and then when the market opens up, we should be ready to sell our products. This is something that we have visualised long before the present government’s ‘Make In India’ campaign started.”

Mr. Jaijit Bhattacharya, Partner, Infrastructure & Govt. services –KPMG “Where are we heading when we are talking about Smart City? The idea of building a Smart City is to have a Cognitive city. A Cognitive City will take learnings from people and machines; if it senses that the air pollution is going up, it immediately shuts down all equipments and machines that is throwing up these pollutants in the air. But you first need to have a Smart city before pushing for a Cognitive city. So a Smart City will use and leverage information, to deliver services to its people better, to make the life of its residents better and will eventually have a network for Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent applications and so on. But you can have all of that only when you have a functional city.”

Rohit Oberoi, Director Channel – India & Middle East, Seclore Technology Pvt Ltd. “One of the fastest growing things in the world is Data. Some of it is sensitive, some of it is confidential; data security is one of the prime concerns of any organization. In a recent report, Gartner suggested that most of the companies which go in for seeking business information protection solution land up in point solutions, which definitely might not address the risk of data movement. In today’s inter connected world, the pervasive demand for data movement is unavoidable. They have to move out of the controlled environment. And most of the companies today spend money on securing the data in their controlled environment. Seclore as a security company deals with data movement as bulk of the data rests in the outside environment.”

CONFED-ITA receives as the INNOVATIVE IT ASSOCIATION IN INDIA

PCAIT receives as the MOST ACTIVE IT ASSOCIATION IN INDIA

TAIT receives as the BEST IT ASSOCIATIONS IN TECHNOLGY TRANSFORMATION

IT Association Round Table Conference on Advantage GST VARINDIA along with FAIITA, a registered association of channel partners conducted a joint meet of members of FAIITA 'Conference on Advantage GST' to discuss key issues and most importantly the roadmap to the implementation of GST and the pitfalls that still persist in it. The heads of different IT associations from across the country participated in the session that also aimed to come up to a consensus of how to take FAIITA ahead by identifying its flaws and the ways to rectify them. Sathya Pramod, Chief Financial Officer – Tally Solutions took to the stage to discuss on some of the implications of GST with the partners and also addressed many of their raging issues. “If you look at the 20 lakhs limit (initially it was 10 lakhs) that the Govt. is talking, even the Pani-puriwalla on the Delhi street would be making that kind of money. In all earnest that the Government tries to implement this law, even that guy needs to be registered under GST. It is a huge opportunity in the sense that the government is expected 80 lakhs return in the very first month. But I think it should be much more if it is done in the right manner. The entire law of GST is based on cascading of taxes. You all know how VAT was implemented at all levels of value addition that took place in the entire product cycle. But like everyone was saying VAT is not a technology law. The beauty of GST is that it is a technology-led law. There is nothing that can be done in GST without technology – right from registration to cancellation of registration, everything has to be done through a computer, which is a big opportunity for both hardware and software vendors. There is a lot that needs to be done before getting where the country expects us to be. Government has said that it will come out with a rating system for tax payers but that can be possible only after 2-3 years.” The discussion further stated that smaller companies are the ones that are going to suffer a bit and so correct measures need to

be taken to safeguard their business interests. GST will indeed play a key role in bringing transparency into India's indirect tax regime. But there are certain modifications expected to the credit policy on both purchase and sales of raw materials, semi-finished goods, software and services. It also hinted at the fact that there would also be a need to implement robust IT systems and impart staff training at all levels. C R Gurjar, President-FAIITA while congratulating all members for successfully getting FAIITA as a registered body threw some light on some of the actions that should be taken to steer forward the association’s activities. Firstly he asked for opening of a bank accounts and fund collection, as without funds it would never be possible to run a nationwide association; Secondly, give more importance to state associations; Thirdly, writing to different government agencies of its willingness to work together as an uniform body so that problems and issues

can be discussed to bring them to a logical conclusion. “With introduction of GST, we have the protect the rights of the small resellers who might get wiped out if their interests are not met. So there should be an urgent meeting with all vendors and put pressure on them to look into the needs of partners of all sizes. All associations should have a strong PRO so that they are aware of what we are doing.” Saket Kapur, General Secretary – FAIITA suggested that account should be opened in a Nationalised Bank in Delhi with 3 signatories the President, the Secretary and the Treasurer to approve or pass any cheque. For the Membership fee structure, it was decided that state association would be paying Rs 10,000 and Rs 5000 for associate members who do not have a state association. The Meet ended on the note that the members should meet more often to discuss vital issues, which becomes very difficult to be passed without the consent of a majority.

INDUSTRY EVENT

Convergence of Delegates explore together on Digital First

Canalys APAC Channels Conference was recently held in Macau, where the channel partners, distributors and vendors attended the event to understand on how ‘Digital First’ is impacting business in Asia pacific Region. There were various keynote address held on best practices and the new wave opportunities and challenges faced by the channel partners. With the presence of Technology companies that includes Dell EMC, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo, Schneider, Polycom, Dropbox, the event described on how the channel programs are evolving to help partners increase revenues. More than 900 one-to-one meetings were held throughout the conference and the presence of Global distributors partners in the summit including Avnet, Westcon Comstor and Ingram Micro made the event a great success. Steve Brazier, President and CEO - Canalys Steve Brazier delivers in-depth analysis, targeted trends insights and senior counsel to high-tech decisionmakers. Steve’s expertise spans the full range of the firm’s research areas including mobility, IT infrastructure and channel strategy. He is recognized in the technology industry as a leading source of distribution channel trends and routes-to-market strategy. Brazier said on his opening address that Hyper-convergence is here to stay, "This year it is taking off. However, all the hyper-convergence is just a substitution product. You sell hyperconverged instead of servers and storages, so it is not as exciting as it made out to be. It is just a different format." Brazier further added, “It has been a tough year for the channel, reason being in most mature countries, whether APAC or Europe, it has been a difficult year for the traditional technology areas - servers, storage, PCs, networking. It has been very hard for companies to find growth. The distributors have turned slightly negative; they're slightly declining by 1-2 percent, but they had been growing year after year, except 2009, for 15 years. Overall channel partners are growing but on single digits not double digits that they were over previous years.” Gianfranco Lanci, Corporate President and Chief Operating Officer – Lenovo Empowering the digital-first workforce – opportunities for the channel In the opening address Gianfranco Lanci, Corporate President and COO, Lenovo, said that the channel industry is going to exist forever and currently Lenovo has 60,000 resellers in Asia Pacific and has plans to add more to its feather and need to simplify the channel program much more. The opportunity for the channel is still big. “As much as possible we want to simplify how we run the business together. Currently, we have identified two areas of growth and they are mobile phones and the data center. 100% of Lenovo’s business is handled by 8 distributors, and the plan is to extend the depth and breadth of the channel network in the country. Last but not the least, Innovation will become important; but to innovate you need to be financially solid because innovation is expensive. To do this, we are going to introduce a business portal in Asia.”

Richard Bailey, President, Asia Pacific and Japan Region – HP Inc. A partner-first company “The separation of HP has enabled us to move forward more rapidly,” said Richard Bailey, President of Asia Pacific Japan, HP, Inc. in his keynote address. “HP is transforming the channel program so channel partners can make more revenues. We are also reinventing the sales platform, and one of the enabling technologies is social media. We are not only a partner-first company, but also a partner-led company.”Bailey said that opportunities for channel partners lie in rapid urbanization; changing demographics; hyper globalization; and accelerated innovation.”

Peter Ryan, Chief Sales Officer, Enterprise Group, Hewlett Packard Enterprise talking on “If you look at HPE, we are a $28 billion company. In Asia alone, 80% of our business goes through our channel partners. In terms of relevance, we are a strong global player, currently number one or two in every single category that we operate in. So our relevance is punctuated by those statistics. In terms of the spin-merger activity, the real value is in the channel. The things that we are spinning and merging are things that are enterprise services – most people in the channel worry about that overlap of services capability, especially as people become service providers and managed service providers. So, this can only be seen as fantastic news for the channel. Honestly, when you look at the software element, the core software assets we maintain in hybrid, the edge and Aruba create incredible opportunities for the channel and speak to the numbers on a global basis. This market is now worth $250 billion, while we are a $28 billion company, so there are plenty of opportunities. So, if the partner wants me to come along and boost morale, I am happy to do it and rally the troops. Secondly, talking about the roadmap, Flash, for example, on a worldwide basis, this business grew last quarter by 44%. I think we are the only one of the top five vendors that has grown our Flash business for the last 10 consecutive quarters. In high performance computing, we are a global leader. It’s an aggressive market worth $11 million and it’s growing between 7% and 8%. We have cemented ourselves in with the recent acquisition of SGI, which we will complete soon. So, I think we have pockets of great growth." John Byrne, President, Global Channel - Dell EMC Simple, predictable, and profitable Dell Technologies completed the acquisition of EMC Corp by creating a $74-billion company with an expansive technology portfolio, and now the world’s largest privately-controlled technology company. In his keynote, Byrne, says that Dell and EMC channel partners have already completed the integration process and are now in the market selling Dell, EMC and VMware together as one solution. “Dell EMC will focus on deepening its relationships with current partners rather than recruiting new resellers. Further added, our total channel business is US$ 35 Billion and it is growing @ 3 to 4X in Asia market and in APJ is growing at 6X. Overall channel business of DELL is growing by 4 times.” Byrne said the new Dell EMC Partner Program will go live from February 2017, will integrate two channel programs and will encompass the entire Dell EMC partner ecosystem, inclusive of solution providers, cloud service providers, global alliances, OEM solutions partners and distribution. Latestly, we are building a worldclass partner program that is simple, predictable, and profitable.

Matt Pahnke Head of Product and Brand Marketing – Dropbox spoke about how Modern work has changed. Dropbox is the solution that over 500 million users inside 8 million businesses trust to access and share their most important files. Narendra Modi's demonetization leads to surge in digital payment The announcement of demonetization of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to a surge in digital payments, thereby helping India move towards Digital India In a historical move that will add strength to the fight against corruption, black money, money laundering, terrorism and financing of terrorists as well as counterfeit notes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that the five hundred and one thousand rupee notes will no longer be a legal tender from midnight, 8th November, 2016. Shri Narendra Modi said that this decision will fully protect the interests of honest and hard-working citizens of India and that those five hundred and one thousand rupee notes hoarded by antinational and antisocial elements will become a worthless piece of paper. India is now a bright spot in the global economy and is the preferred destination for investment. The demonetization exercise will give a big boost to the banking sector which will give fillip to “Make in India”, “Startup India” and “Standup India” movement, thus helping India to leapfrog. The industry has come in full support of demonetization of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000. We are also witnessing a huge surge in digital payments across all companies and all verticals. Some e-commerce companies have stopped COD (Cash on Delivery) or are reviewing COD and moving towards digital transaction as the country is undergoing a major transformation for the next 50 days. Speaking about government's decision, Rishi Gupta, MD & CEO, FINO PayTech, said, "We believe this development will definitely encourage the large segment who is unbanked and underbanked to join the formal banking ecosystem. As a payments bank, we see this is an extremely positive sign to reach out to these customers for deposit mobilization and investments in a regulated, transparent and safe environment.” Commenting on demonetization, Sanjay Sethi, Co-Founder & CEO, Shopclues, said, "This is a masterstroke by the BJP government and a very bold move, indeed. Even though this is not the first time such a move has been made by a sitting government, what is significant this time is that it is built on the JAM trinity – Jandhan, Aadhaar and Mobile, making it hard for the country to regress." Speaking on demonitization of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000, Vikas Jain, Co-Founder, Micromax, said, "When a country of a billion people changes, it will be a biggest historical change. In the next 50 days, we are going to witness a significant change in the payment habits of the consumers and as a leading handset player we are proud to be a frontrunner in facilitating this change."

“Anticipating the change from offline to online payments, our payment facility tied to an escrow account has ensured that the transactions via Quikr are safe, secure and cashless. The government’s current decision will encourage reliance on online payments in C2C transactions and we are already equipped to handle the change and also enable more consumers to transact seamlessly online,” Anurag Saran, CPO, Quikr. Amit Jain, President, Uber India, said, "It is a bold move from a cash economy to a digital-first one. We anticipate it will have long-term benefits for the economy, ushering in transparency and a faster adoption of digital payments, something that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for." "Usage of digital currency and online payment systems driven by UPI, wallets and cards will be on the rise as customers will increasingly opt for e-commerce platforms. It will further position improve India’s stature as a corruption-free, transparent nation globally, enabling higher capital flow," said Manish Sharma, President, CEAMA. "Within a 50-day period, over a billion Indians will change their payments behaviour – we will move from cash-only to a cashfree economy. This is a strong step taken by the Modi government and will benefit the growth of digital payments and digital banking in India. We are excited to be a part of this historic moment," said Bipin Preet Singh, CEO, MobiKwik. "Indian users do a trillion US dollars worth of payments annually, of which more than 90 per cent are in cash. We, at MobiKwik, were trending to process $1 billion of payments in

2017. With this policy change, we expect a 10x impact and we expect to easily hit $10 billion in payments volume by 2017," added Singh. “We welcome the government’s bold and courageous move to weed out black money, which will have significant long-term benefits for the economy. With this, the quantum of India’s economy moving through the digital pipe will witness massive growth. Both Snapdeal and FreeCharge are committed to supporting all such initiatives,” says Kunal Bahl, Co-Founder & CEO, Snapdeal. Paladion Networks CFO Padmanabha Krishnamurthy said, "On the brighter side, it encourages people to transact more on electronic mode payments like NEFT/RTGS/ Internet banking, mobile wallets, IMPS, credit/debit cards, etc. The Government and RBI should encourage electronic payment transactions by making it free of cost for the people by eliminating the transaction fees that bank charges for the electronic mode transactions." On the cybersecurity front, it emphasizes banks to have a more secure banking platform for its customers to do electronic transactions and increase customers’ confidence level on it, added Krishnamurthy. The demonetization exercise has given a big boost to the digital payment industry and the payment industry needs to be extra careful with respect to making secure transactions so that users do not face problems and they continue with digital transactions helping the economy to grow stronger than ever before. n

Total FDI inflows in electronics and computer software and hardware sector grew by 156 per cent in FY2015-16 to $6.1 billion from $2.4 billion in FY2014-15. The increase in FDI inflows is due to government driving forward reforms in the IT and electronics sector through initiatives like Make in India and by creating favourable policies. All these policies help local manufacturers as they are being offered a lot of incentives. The Electronic System Design & Manufacturing Sector (ESDM) is projected to grow at a CAGR of 24 per cent from $70 billion in 2014 to $400 billion by 2020. VAR TALK

IT Industry gives a Thumbs Up to the Demonetization Move The demonetizing move by PM Narendra Modi of discontinuing Rs 500 and 1000 notes has not only took every Indian by surprise, but it has been lauded and welcomed by the IT industry by hailing it as a ‘Masterstroke’ and a bold move -

8th November 2016 will go down in history as a day that Indians will keep it in mind for a lifetime. It is on this day that a major step taken by the present government and RBI is believed to improve the lifeline of the crumbling economy for better. The discontinuing of Rs 500 & 1000 notes will not only help in the long run for the country to prosper but also have greater implications like faster GDP growth, bringing down inflation and products becoming more affordable which will fuel the demand and further growth of the industries. Applauding the move, Srividya Kannan, Founder, Director – Avaali Solutions says, “This is an extremely bold and first of its kind crack down initiative against corruption, black money and counterfeit currency. It is indeed commendable the way that this initiative has been executed with such perfection (including timing of the announcement, keeping such a wide initiative under wraps until announcement etc.). There is no doubt that in the mid to long run, this will indeed have a big impact to remove the termite of corruption.” Even though this is not the first time such a move has been made by a sitting government, what is significant this time is that it is built on the JAM trinity – Jandhan, Aadhar and Mobile – making it hard for the country to regress. The gradual transition starting with Aadhaar/ PAN/ Bank account linking, penetration of digital wallets and online services, multiple instances to declare black money followed by back end preparation of new currency, which will definitely bring evident changes in the governance. “A full-blown war, not just a surgical strike, has been declared by the Indian Government against black money. Out of the current Indian population estimated at 123 crore, only a minimal fraction of 2.87 crore individuals filed their income tax return and even lower, one percent or 1.25 crore, paid taxes in FY 2014-15. With the PM's announcement, the honest tax payers will get their fair play. The nation's biggest crackdown will certainly check black money and cross-border monetary transactions of counterfeit currency. This will curb corruption to a large extent and also ease the life of common citizens,” suggests Rajeev Jain, Chief Financial Officer, Intex

Technologies (India) Ltd.

Impact on the IT Industry -

The increasingly growing dependence on ICT right after this scheme gets into action seems to be getting clearer. Says Anwar Shirpurwala, Executive Director – MAIT, “The move taken by the govt. clearly indicates that we will be depending more and more on the ICT. This move has been possible because of the availability of technology and multiple means of financial transaction. This also calls for the Govt to further look for means of increasing IT penetration, thus enabling every citizen to use technology tools and services for cashless transactions. Govt. should continue to give more emphasis on technology led schemes and programs for the betterment of the economy growth." Opines Satish Kumar V, Country Head DMX India, “This is a welcome opportunity for the IT industry as the dependency on the banking & online transactions and communications is set to grow exponentially. This development would help hardware/ software/services players to perform smart

business, maintaining a transparent track record. It is also a boost to the start-up segment that can now take the cashless transactions and related shopping /purchase related experience to new levels of comfort with their innovative platform & service idea." Rohit Agarwal, CEO - Astrum Electronics India comments, “For the IT industry, there is not going to be a major impact as our industry works mostly (around 90%) in bill and there is only less component of it which is in real cash, if we talk about branded materials. But those who are not selling brand and are importing material from China, it will be big challenge for them as there 90% business in cash. The main issue will be at the consumer level as most of the people are buying in cash and people are not

habituated to use debit and credit card so sales will suffer in short term. This move will help brands to grow and help in curbing the fake, grey market, and Chinese import cash sales.” Agrees Biswas Nair, Founder & Managing Director - Inspira Cloudtech, “This decision will hardly be impacting businesses in the IT industry as most of the transactions are done digitally. But, certainly the largest employee base in the IT industry may feel the inconvenience in near future because of the pull out of the 500 and 1000 currency notes." S Sriram, CEO - iValue infosolutions too echoes a similar sentiment, “There won't be much of an impact on the IT industry as they prefer purchase and sales through banking system only. Once cleaned up, further generation of black money will be dramatically cut down and more transactions will happen electronically instead of cash and hence the counterfeit will reduce." According to Sudip De, Director - DOEL International, IT and mobility are pretty settled business through national distribution. “All cash businesses would be hit for sure. Legal distribution through NDs & RDs would thrive to topple the grey market; trade would be hit in the short term but in the long term people would learn to do their business through cheques or net banking. I just hope the daily wage earners are not hit. Most of them have not been able to decipher the entire process clearly and they should be educated. I prefer sudden jerks and so am happy the way it has been done.” With GST likely to be rolled out from 1st April 2017, this demonetisation of old currency notes will complement the government's move to ensure higher 'tax compliance'. “While there may be hardship for a week or two, thereafter things are expected to settle down, and people in general, including businesses, would be able to get cash when needed through authorised banking channels,” observes Viren Bavishi, Director – TAIT.

Reactions from the Industry The ICT industry too has reacted positively to the move and the reactions started coming out right after the PM made his announcement Sanjay Sethi, Co-founder and CEO - Shopclues "This is a master stroke by the BJP government and a very bold move indeed. The country’s infrastructure is much more prepared to make this a watershed moment for war against terrorism and black money. This will play a significant role in putting India on track to becoming the economic force it is intended to be." Upasana Taku, Co-founder - MobiKwik “The announcement of discontinuation of Rs 500 & Rs 1000 notes is a mind blowing initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to curb black money in India. This is the biggest surgical strike on the menace of cash ever heard of anywhere in the world. This is a historic policy change and will go down in democratic India's history as more impactful than the economic reforms of 1990s. Our kids will read about this in their history and economics books. Within a 50 day period a billion Indians will change their payments behaviour - we will move from cash only to a cash-free economy.” Sathvik Vishwanath, CEO and Co-Founder, Unocoin "The intentions are good but very difficult to achieve. If going cashless is the only way forward, certainly the bitcoin which is borderless trustless and transparent currency makes more sense". Manavjeet Singh, CEO & Founder, Rubique "This is a promising move made by the government towards cashless economy. This will boost innovation in the nascent electronic payment industry. Without doubt, this will bring down frauds and thefts and costs of printing cash. It is a great blow to black money. If executed well, the costs of doing transactions between buyers and sellers will lower significantly by 2019." Ranjit Punja, CEO &Co-founder, Creditmantri "A Sweeping step taken by the PM, but this should have a positive impact in curtailing black money and reducing corruption. Likely to cause some temporary hardship, and with the introduction of the Rs. 2,000 note, along with the security and tracking features, currency will be used as intended." Suresh Pansari, Director - Rashi Peripherals The announcement made by Narendra Modi to cancel legal tendering of Indian Currency Note of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 with effect from 9th November is a very bold decision for the Indian Economy after Banking nationalization in 1969. Discontinuation of currency note of denomination of 500 and 1000, with a view to keep in mind: • 1 To differentiate the legal Notes and old fake note which are in circulation. • 2 To stop money supply to terrorist and drug mafia. • 3 To improve better Tax compliance and additional Tax collected to be used for building Infrastructure in India such as Road, Air Ports, Sea Ports, Power Plant etc • 4 To reduce corruption in Indian Politics and Government. • 5 To bring Cash money in circulation for better productivity. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Impact of above, may be Transaction in Cash will reduce drastically. Payment through Cheque, RTGS, NIFTY, Credit Card, Debit Card will increase a lot Indian Retails that used to accept Cash needs to change their way of operation from Cash to Banking Money. Much awaited Tax compliance will be in place for: Income Tax, Service Tax, VAT, Stamp Duty, Local Levy etc. Corruption should reduce drastically.

6. Level playing field, honesty and efficiency to reward, will pay a major roll. 7. In few months/short term period, Rural Population will face difficulty for this decision of cancellation of old Notes but the same will get habituated and would create more benefits to them, in medium/long term. 8. IT and Mobility business, again short term we might slow down for a while but soon will have much better/higher opportunities way forward, after implementation of GST in 2017.

Abey Zachariah, CEO - Goodbox "This will change the way business happens. This is the death knell of the parallel economy. We are thankful to Prime Minister Modi for taking this step. We were predicting that money will be digital to a large extent in the 3-5 years. The move by PM Modi will accelerate the process. This move will help the country fight the menace of fake currency. Black money will be out and this will give a big fillip to businesses like Goodbox. We expect transaction charges to go to a small fraction of what it is today due to increased digital currency transactions. This will result in businesses adopting digital and platforms like Goodbox for the future. Black money will not be a competitive advantage." M A Mannan, Country Manager, India - Corsair "This is a great initiative by the government and a bold step towards future. Though it came as a surprise but everyone should appreciate and support the initiative to flush out fake currency, black money from our country. Biggest plus is at least this government is initiating some kind of actions against black money which is good for the economy. Minus from this development is to wait and watch, as money demonetization has happened before in history but with no effects on black money. Suggestions could be many but when it is done it's done. It should have been done in a phased manner to start with 1000Rs and then to 500Rs.” Sanjay Patodia, CEO - Galaxy Office Automation Pvt. Ltd. "The ban on big currency notes will definitely going to give a positive boost, but only in the short term. The government is allowing people to deposit money into the system, but also reserve the right to audit it. There is still not much clarity on some points like the penalty for not depositing money in a given time frame and the rates of the penalty for late deposit. The other thing to look forward is how the government can sustain this impact. With the arrival of new big currency the government should make efficient plans to curtail on cash money. Rajan Chellappan, Managing Director - Optiserv Solutions Pvt Ltd. "We will call it a calculated step by Government of India towards the economic growth of the country. This step will help in making cashless transactions a mainstream. However, this will not going to affect IT sphere, particularly the organized IT industry, where all the transactions are done through banking systems only." Suresh Sethi, Business Head, M-Pesa, Vodafone India “Vodafone India welcomes the Government’s bold step to accelerate India’s progress into a less cash economy. We reiterate our commitment to actualize the government’s vision through Vodafone M-Pesa that leverages the reach of mobile technology to enable financial inclusion and offers the convenience of a digital wallet for easy transactions. The unique cash out feature of Vodafone M-Pesa makes it the ideal digital wallet for masses, enabling users to digitise cash, remit it to family and friends, pay bills and/or withdraw it at their convenience from over 120,000 touch points across the country.” www.varindia.com

Jiten Mehta Director, Magnamious Systems

Dhungat, Chairman & MD, Galaxy Office Automation, said, “Mobility and cloud continue to be the strong drivers for the system integration market. In the current fiscal, adoption of the cloud is, in fact, a lot more visible this year than the previous years, as organizations are realizing the potential of this technology. We are also seeing a lot of interest towards SAP HANA in the recent times. Other than this, we are upbeat about a whole lot of opportunities around core infrastructure upgrades among enterprises of all sizes.” “The market is still in its initial phase and not matured yet. The opportunities around smart cities will depend largely on how various states and Union Government put the projects on fast track,” added Dhungat. “Vendors in the government are doing well. So we expect the benefits to flow across integrators. Cloud has not taken off, but the security market is booming, at an unprecedented scale. Ransomware has made enterprises proactive about data

protection. SMEs are waking up to the need of protecting and securing their data. E-learning is developing well, but a clear-cut direction and benefits should be announced by the government so that it can really take off,” said Kshitij M. Kotak, Chief Innovation Officer, Blackbox Data Safe. IoT is poised to make a quantum leap, but, at the moment, the opportunities for integration are few, barring home automation as real IoT has not reached Indian shores for integrators,” added Kotak. Cloud computing is primary the enabler for growth as companies will not throw away what is already invested in onpremise. So they will go hybrid route in this transition which generates even more opportunities. Government, education and security offer the largest market for system integrator,” says Kartik Shah, CEO & MD, Bitscape Infotech. Security is the growth driver and probably newer technologies as majority

customers are in the consolidation phase and are looking for cloud migration. Smart city, Indian Railways and Defence expansion are a very big market for system integrators,” says Jiten Mehta, Director, Magnanimous Systems. Commenting on the system integration market, Manoj Kanodia, CEO, Inspira Enterprise, said, “Cloud implementation and big data solutions implementation are the new trend in the information technology systems market and companies are adopting the integration, thereby providing added advantages to the companies implementing solutions.” “Development in the automation sector is driving system integration market, as the adoption of system integration technologies is high in the automation sector. he adoption of technology at most business organizations was top-down, mostly driven by the management. To ensure that the best of technologies were deployed, the Indian businesses sought external intervention from consultants and System Integrators who could not only source and supply hardware, but also install the software, networking equipment, security tools, integrate the software applications and manage them to ensure they work seamlessly without disruption. This led to the System Integration boom in India.

Tenable helps customers analyze networks By identifying the open vulnerabilities and analyzing the networks, Tenable Network Security helps manage the vulnerabilities of its customers. The company’s flagship product NESSUS, by virtue of its product, has become the standard in vulnerability assessment. Tenable Network Security is presently focussing on BFSI and service providers and also paying equal importance to the SME sector as its solutions are widely used in this sector. Though the network security is a highly competitive market, the company still sees an ample opportunity. Discussing about the solutions and the market, Manoj Taskar, Country Manager, India & SAARC, Tenable talked about its channel network and partner opportunity.

Please brief company?

us

about

your

Tenable Network Security Solutions is into Vulnerability Management and helps customers in analyzing their networks, as to what are the open vulnerabilities in them, helping them remediate what is happening in the network. This company was formed in 2002 and has been the market leader since then by virtue of its product called NESSUS which is like an industry standard now in any vulnerability assessment. NESSUS is like defector standard in vulnerability assessment. Any consultant, any network vulnerability manager uses NESSUS tool to do his activity. This is the tool that we have from our own portfolio and we have built a whole lot of solutions around that to ensure that costumer gets more meaningful insight rather than getting a raw launch.

Which is the area of operations that you are concerned with? The business that we are focusing on now is banking finance – BFSI and service providers. The tool is common across the platform, be it a pharma company, a call centre BPO, manufacturing etc. Anyone whose maturity level to understand the security level is there, he is our customer. The focus is more on banking & finance and service providers. It is completely driven by the fact that it is a compliance-driven activity. They have more regulations, guidelines to follow and that is how we help them.

How important is the segment for Tenable ?

SME

SME is an important segment because the single largest product that we have NESSUS brand is used extensively across the market. It sells on its own merits. So the smaller companies which can’t do a continuous monitoring, they rely on that tool to do their audit assessments. So it is a very important segment for us to address.

56

first it is a product sales per set. Second, the product also requires a lot of professional services which the channel can deliver to the customer. Product sales is one and then they have effected this engagement to the customer from professional services point of view, because they have to teach the customer how to use the product, generate reports for them continuously. So this is a ongoing engagement which gives them a continuous access to the customers all the time. It also helps them in upselling other products to the same customer, so it works both the side.

How competitive is the network security market in this country? Manoj Taskar Country Manager, India & SAARC Tenable

What is the USP of Tenable? The USP of Tenable is to provide complete analysis, from a vulnerability standpoint for security, whether it is active or passive scanning, whether it is an event correlation – all put together.

How are your solutions different from your competitors? So the uniqueness that we bring to the table is something called as passive vulnerability scanning, which none of the competitors have. Some of the places where the devices or the assets are very critical, you don’t have access to those – we have something called as AGENTS, which can sit on them and do complete assessment and feed continuous reports to us. He can use it in the hybrid mode, so it can do the active scan, the passive scan, agent-based scan – all fit together to one single dashboard to give one single-window view on how the entire enterprise is behaving.

What kind of opportunity do you see in terms of market productions and channel expenses? It is a dual benefit for the channel, because

It is very competitive. There are a lot of players in the market and everyone is competing for that type of security piece but at the same time there is enough in the market also for everyone to have. If you have a USP and if you have something which is required by the customer which you can offer, there is a place for your play. For us it’s 100% channeldriven. So we rely heavily on the channel so they can bring the value to the customer. For that we are enabling our channels enough to ensure that they can talk different for us, than any other player in the market.

What is the market share you have in India? It is very early for me to say that because we started our operations only in May. So we are still in the phase of setting up. Tenable’s product – NESSUS is the single widely used tool across the board. It is difficult for me to categorize in terms of numbers, because it’s a retail product – people buy it today, people buy it tomorrow and they use it. If they are done with it, they just renew it again. So it’s a retail product for me to categorize and say that is the total numbers of Licences being sold, we don’t keep a track on a regular basis. It comes once in a year to us and this is the entire chunk that happened in the region and then we sell upsell on those licences directly. n Aparna Mullick aparna@varindia.com
